my leg and and that was the thing that was like well that's not supposed to be happening. joseph is not alone. several other men have come forward in a series of exclusive interviews with fault lines. they allege years of abuse at the hands of father john patrick in catholic schools across new york city he just said the violence. of last sunday everybody curdle goal and sparking the latest revelations in a decades old scandal that's shaken the catholic church to its foundation going to spare us 2 months have been tough mark on the family right timothy dolan the archbishop of new york told the 2 and a half 1000000 catholics under his watch to rest assured i heard that what you want is accountability transparency and action to counter the same he claimed that there were no active priest space incredible abuse allegations in his archdiocese clergy
6:24 pm
abuse he said was largely a problem of the past. our investigation into father patrick revealed a different story while they were allowing these things predator priests to frolic around aimlessly on the streets of new york with open access you know. under the shell of a collar it's a story that raises questions about new york's catholic hierarchy and whether it's need or has put the prestigious of the church above the survival of its victims i wonder if there was someone that went right up to knock on the door of same paget's cathedral and said father so and so did this to me. how long would it take for a father so and so be removed or suspended from that ministry. how long would it take for the investigation to begin i think it should not take more than you know an hour instead of. a week a month. a year but there's
6:25 pm
a moral obligation are you willing to tell you we're going to tell your priest because i'm sure you know it was 2 years in multiple allegations or are you going to ask you how proud are you willing to preach your in harms way everyone tries to tell you no they stop what do you think the church should do stop hiding. this man who we'll call gabriel never forgot the abuse he faced as a 12 year old catholic school student so that's the church you see there where the black roof is a hat sarette 3 today this view from his home serves as a constant reminder that when you look at the window now you can see the church what do you think about. just how that destroyed might you. really get back

a photo here where little altar boy is jumping into father paddocks arms and then father patrick says these are my children pressing the boy's head closer now i look at all children that i deal with as my children. gabriel was one of those altar boys he told us that father patrick molested him during confession for 2 years. how do you get always i'm confessing you don't have a crowd do you. some one on one thing. confession was i'm sitting on a chair. he's sitting directly in front of me is knees are one is here the other one's here ok he's got his left hand behind your head and his right hand is here and his right hand would be from your knee and sometimes end up over here most of the part and then he would you know and i would actually point and touch and say do

you use that to you masturbate say the truth. oh do tell him mary's. do you think you were mentioning before that you felt like he would prey on certain people i think the most the more vulnerable people yeah. you know why it's what makes you think that he was going after runnable kids. because i was definitely one of them. think about it. what parent is going to complain to you that his son is being touched inappropriately and i want. gabriel almost canceled our interview he said it made him sick to think about these memories. with the father of 2 knew that father patrick was still out there. as he facing the consequences for their actions you know how he's still hurting right.
6:29 pm
with kids. out. for this investigation we spoke to 5 men who say that father patrick abused them. their attorneys told us the allegations form a pattern of abuse in catholic schools from the early 1980 s. until the early to thousands. these are the people that know one another and then in the aggregate as are coming forward telling thing the same and similar stories a pattern of behavior is there and we've got a set of other survivors have come forward from 3 different girls. survivors of different ages from different boroughs at different facilities and told the same story. monsignor product using his position of authority isolates those boys either at the school or in some cases in his bedroom in some cases out the church
6:30 pm
wherever the opportunity may present itself. by 2001 patrick was an academic dean in staten island or jews of karma know was a student. high school was difficult for joseph j.s.t. of joy care of his was happening her she'd been suicidal and was hospitalized missing weeks of class as in making children of all ages when jews have returned to school father patrick told his parents that he'd keep their son's medication in his office theater i think of my students today who are 1617 years old and they have their issues they have their troubles and they go to people for help and imagine taking advantage of that person in that unique situation that's the worst of the worst to take advantage of someone in their time of most need. their most vulnerable. in march 21000 joseph reported father patrick
6:31 pm
to the archdiocese. but months later patrick remained inactive priest here at neutered on parish in upper manhattan. we went there on a sunday in june just as he finished saying mass. i have a question for you do you know joseph car might know joseph joseph hermano. on the suspect who sexually abused i 68 weeks back i lent. you don't know him he's not the only one we know of several other man say to. you it. was during confession stage. so you think i. could actually spoken to many of them and they say the reason that there is because they don't want children to be unsafe and to go after what they were actually reeks of father paddocks denial echoed what he told the media in march it's really hard to speculate because that's when
6:32 pm
a man named raphael mendoza student front of the church and told his story. that the school was circular for being robert's us slowly or down to my genitals but patrick said he still had the support of the archdiocese direct quote was right now i know i do he said i even spoke to the cardinal. cardinal dolan how long do you think that cardinal dolan will continue to protect you as more men come out with their stories and. father patrick said he didn't remember joseph but joseph told us he can't forget father patrick. are very very serious and. i had this stupid d.v.d. of like these clips maybe i interviewed him or something for the t.v. news i don't know. with each discovery from his archive jews have seen counters when the priest came into sharper focus and there it is the junior ring ceremony

mask i had forgotten that i was lector at the mass that he was the celebrant of the mass. even name. the only church to separate from the bible and father patrick sat right behind him and there's no possible way that he could forget who i was based on the number of interactions i had with him the only thing that would make sense to me is if you know if i was just another kid that he touched and it was like you know one in the same. faceless nameless. you know that was his way of justifying it blocking it out that's the only thing i can think of just another kid that he touched yeah seems to be quite a number of us you know. patrick's accusers had reported their
6:34 pm
abuse to family friends and therapist years ago. but for a long time these men didn't file lawsuits or seek prosecutions against the priest . that's because new york's restrictive statute of limitations law made it nearly impossible for them to do so the legal system should be geared to the needs of the victim not the needs of the perpetrator or the institutions that caused it and essentially we're opening the door of the courthouse so when the victims ready they come forward for 17 years legal scholar marcy hamilton has fought for laws that give victims of child sex abuse more time to file claims. and in state capitals across the country the catholic church has been her adversary there's a sense of entitlement that they deserve respect and they deserve deference but nobody is going to get respect or deference is so long as they endanger children
6:35 pm
and that's what they're doing so long as they lobby against the victims in the state legislatures they're on the side of the pedophiles. this year 1000 states and the district of columbia brought in the statute of limitations for child sex crimes where new york's law went into effect in august to save and hundreds of survivors filed lawsuits against the archdiocese of new york. i didn't think i would be able to do this i didn't think i would be able to tell anyone but when i found out that after now 8 of us have come forward and he's still in ministry in manhattan. it's something further had to be done jews have became the 2nd man this year to go public against father patrick. but his attorneys pointed to an even earlier claim back in 2012 another survivor just like mr kara mon-el came forward he came forward he reported to the archdiocese the
6:36 pm
actions of monsignor product he reported to the district attorney the actions of monsignor paddock i was with him during that report those years ago this is your proof of claim. what does this say here 62712 it's a thousands from 2012 this man who we'll call hector filed that initial report here we go who committed the acts of sexual abuse or other wrongful conduct father john and patrick hector was a 17 year old student at cardinal his high school in the bronx. that's when he went to father patrick for help dealing with the sexual abuse he'd faced as a child some close to the family. child to try to molest me i was 5 years old. and i'm blogging me so in the school to. talk about it
6:37 pm
and get it out and move on. but i said it's a wrong person. and just so there's an itch a fellow has. just gone towards my private parts. i fall comfortable we're not shot of back again he grabbed both of the handles like to stop when he was holding the handles on the chair what do you think he was trying to say with that stop moving the stop move. and i left out the room a little baffled as to madden my knowledge is. because i just thought something was wrong with me. the archdiocese investigated hector's claim and cleared patrick of wrongdoing the archdiocese has known about the allegations against monsignor rick for years more than 6 years.
6:38 pm
those allegations have been kept quiet by the archdiocese they chose to believe the offender who had been accused and who had no doubt deny it and then silently and quietly continue that offender in ministry from that day to this that's what they chose to do when we met father patrick at church he agreed to an on camera interview the next day he changed his mind and we ended up on the phone with him. they all have sort of strikingly similar stories and that's where you know it starts to get a little hard on telling us. there's. something wrong with that no matter what. would you pull them close to you is that would that be sort of a traditional way that you would counsel them is like pulling them close to you just. try sports or i don't know so.
6:39 pm
i'm ok would your knees ever be touching theirs. ok would your knee ever would you ever have your knee inside their leg or anything like that certainly not consciously in your consolation process would you ever see yourself like rubbing on their on their leg are on their thought oh. never ok did you ever remove any students close any student or alter always clothing or any reason. so did you ever examined them medically examined them no you never did you never examined them. with a stethoscope no. ok. ok all right yeah that's one of the claims and then a few of them made was that you could was. there was patrick for years it
6:40 pm
appeared that paddocks parishioners were not aware of the claims against their priest and here's patrick in 2015 presiding over a confirmation mass through it all it seemed that father patrick could rely on the support of the archbishop and here is a picture of cardinal dolan and raising a glass with his buddy father pat it. looks like they're pretty close friends. as a cardinal dolan is among a select group of the vatican's most powerful men. for a time there was even talk of him becoming the next pope. he promised respect and obedience to me and my successors to god the speaker this could work you know bring it just so. we wanted to know how long cardinal dolan would take father panix word over that of his accusers. once again we found ourselves in church looking for
6:41 pm
a chance to greet the man who catholics refer to as his eminence. as dolan greeted parishioners he appeared to be in good spirits. that began to change once we asked him about father patrick the archdiocese and now suspects these things against father having for 7 years now and i was wondering why is he still an active ministry or losing their security risk from doing this but there's a moral obligation are you willing you're willing to take the free speech those who rushed for sure there are genuine shooters in multiple allegations or are you going to ask you are you probably are you. are you willing to her arms away are you willing to her in harm's way and one last. place for calling everybody starts with one thing in welfare before us and.
6:42 pm
what messed up their families or i'm going to bring himself up tell you don't face a. priest phone use the phone that you don't want for you or you can only have stuff. and thankfulness and later hear a voice about the welfare of children in need to carry the worries there are many sure that is thank you think about it you know about it for 7 years i say to her finances if they sensed a few child. it stones policy to suspend a priest while the church investigates allegations of abuse against him. but when we spoke to patrick on the phone he seemed confident the dolan would keep him in ministry what's the message to the public that a priest that's been accused of sexually abusing children gets to remain in their job as a priest still working with children. like. the
6:43 pm
archdiocese has a 0 tolerance 7 policy. which are substantial. and i don't want to go on a week after our encounter with cardinal dolan we got an update on paddocks case. the priest had sent this letter to his congregation after consultation with our no golan and for the good of you the parish and the church i have decided to step away from my role as pastor here. to step in way. we still had questions where would patrick be during the investigation and where was he now and he could be anywhere. in the boats in the park or the beach. you know he still is listed on the parish website as pastor.
6:44 pm
his letter to the parishioners basically said i'll be back when this all blows over . that is the story of the catholic church abuse scandal is that a perpetrator is identified and they then disappear into another parish or they disappear into another state or they just evaporates they are gone. archdiocese officials declined to answer our list of written questions. however they revealed that father patrick hadn't just stepped away he'd been suspended. the rectory where father attic lives it's right up here it's right next to the church and he stepped away from the church a few weeks ago by it and say where he was going or what he would be to be doing while this investigation takes place. when we returned to the parish weeks later patrick was still there inside the

going to be in ministry which is interesting. in september a review commissioned by cardinal dolan concluded that there were no active priests under his watch facing substantiated abuse claims. meanwhile the archdiocese faced 2 new lawsuits accusing priests of abusing minors at least one of them is an active ministry. this is left all of our people you bewildered frustrated and angry our good and faithful priest demoralized and us bishops somber and contrite. i have also heard this chilling comment more than once cardinal dolan we've been so let down that we're beginning to lose trust in you bishops. that stings without your trust i don't have a lot left. so i would ask him. she was my

lebanon's army has been ordered by politicians to open roads across the country the same politicians these lebanese want gone there were skirmishes a few injuries but at the end the military took a step back they're trying to intimidate us to be honest i. think that our by a show of force we're going to back up people are going to be afraid to come and actually publish the opposite all of us rushed early on instead of coming at like 5 or 6 pm for a party this is the main highway connecting the capital beirut to north lebanon protesters have been blocking roads in the hope of pressuring the government to resign prime minister who said protests will be tolerated in squares ordered the security forces to clear the streets he has ordered still process as all the stop isis but this is seeing that the people there are not using any violence they are
6:51 pm
so peaceful it's not clear if the presence of cameras stop the soldiers from using excessive force but not long after the army command issued a statement making it clear daily life must not be disrupted people chant revolution revolution we want the fall of the regime and protesters are still very much defiant they are refusing to leave the streets it seems levanon will witness a for a long period of time. ress if the lebanese government refuses to resign. the governing coalition has not been able to write off the protest movement which has spread across lebanon it is now entering its 2nd week has to be. my son graduates next year and all he thinks about is leaving lebanon he can't find a job here i don't want my children to leave i want those in power to return the money they stole. for decades protests like these were ineffective because the majority of the lebanese people allied themselves with one political group or
6:52 pm
another that may change hard it's different now the people are on the street and we were talking specifically about people who are affiliated politically and maybe still affiliated but it's clear what they want to hold their parties accountable maybe they didn't do it during the elections they are doing is now on the streets no one can pretend to represent the street today the protesters are trying to seize their country from politicians who have been in power for decades for now they have overcome sectarian and political divides and are controlling the streets this is the 1st time lebanon's political leaders face such a serious challenge but that may change if the army chooses to protect those in power. and then is joining us live from the lebanese capital now we're expecting to hear from president along very soon after his much anticipated speech was delayed. yes that was the late the president was supposed to speak an hour ago now he's
6:53 pm
going to address the nation in half an hour from now which will be his 1st comment since the protest movement began a week ago people here want him to announce the government's resignation but so far there is no indication that those in power are ready to cede power but we understand that there have been a lot of meetings behind closed doors so there could be a possible government reshuffle the dismissal of some ministers who have been tainted with corruption allegations but for protesters. here this will not be enough we are demanding a new government a government that will be made up of technocrats people who are not affiliated with any political party people who are going to work in the interests of lebanon so this is what people on the streets tell you and they believe that by broad blocking the roads you can see behind me they've blocked the roads in the capital beirut or across the country they believe this is the only way to maintain the pressure on the government to resign but the government was hoping is that even if these
6:54 pm
protests continue and if they're confined in certain squares then daily life can resume the pressure will be eased on the government but protesters know that this is what the government wants so they're promising to stay in the streets to continue disrupt public life schools universities banks they remain closed and say the government has been trying to use the country's armed forces to break up some of these protests or at least clear a road block so that. something of a will see can return to it and the role in all of this is crucial. definitely the army they've been given the order clear the streets open the roads yes in some areas they're doing that but after convincing people they're not using excessive force in many ways really on the sidelines this is an institution one of the state institutions of lebanon where all political parties are supporters of all political parties they they praise the army they praise the army's role in the past
6:55 pm
and political crises in the past so the question is why is it doing that is that under pressure from the international community the army gets supply is an aid from the united states for example and we know that the international community will not want to see blood spilled on the streets and the international community is also promising lebanon $11000000000.00 in economic aid money the government really needs if it wants to fix the economy so the government the army could be under pressure but what is dangerous there is a dangerous stalemate because now more and more what we are seeing are counter protests protests by loyalists those who still support the traditional parties and there have been skirmishes in some areas this is a deeply divided country and that is why a solution needs to be found before there really could be unrest in the streets zain thank you for that and that is all the live in beirut we would of course be going back to her after we hear from president michel but we're going to stay with the story we're joined by jamal goldson journalist and former editor. and listen
6:56 pm
he's also joining us live from the never nice capital sicko's in very good to have you with us on al-jazeera how much pressure is the president under and is there anything that michel aoun can say short of resigning that will appease protesters. don't think there is anything he could say really that words and this state of protest he might see some things that quell the anger or if he might actually provoke into a protest into. more action the thing is there is really we haven't seen any steps by the government that they are willing to take any major steps towards addressing the real issues for which the people came down to the streets for they did an ounce a series of economic reforms and they were being reported as unprecedented economic reforms do you not think that those were enough protesters obviously don't.
6:57 pm
it was very forward promises that cannot even be acted upon it's very difficult to expect from this government. and this political ruling class that's been him in place for decades to all of a sudden switch their priorities and address have a different economic philosophy and that is what is needed in lebanon right now in minor cosmetic changes to. budget or economic policy are not really going to change anything we're facing a real economic crisis and this this will not solve it and as protesters have been saying you know after so many decades of this sectarian political system that's allowed for for patronage for clientele isn't that the new
6:58 pm
system is needed but that's not i mean how difficult is that given that it's just this one system that's been in place for many decades. you know. what this has created as a peril state or not just did multiple states providing the services of a state that has been eroding over the years since the end of the war this makes it more difficult to become less dependent on these political parties and go back to the lebanese state. needs to be constructed and made stronger to be able to replace a lot of the safety nets that the political parties have provided instead of the state over the past 3 decades mr goss and we thank you very much for your time on this no doubt we'll be talking to you again later in the day after we hear from the president for now that said gholson live in beirut thank you thank you elizabeth. we're going to move on to other news now in the u.s.
