current dictatorship in cambodia. well on top of that lazio has detained rains he's deputy chief small school she tried to travel to come but if she's accused of wanting to return home to stage a coup against one sent scotland with all. the deputy leader of the main opposition party in cambodia most was detained by immigration officials in malaysia now this comes just after she attempted to hold a press conference in jakarta the capital of indonesia but was shouted down by cambodia is a basket or 2 that country now this comes around the announcement weeks ago by sam rainsy who's the founder of that now banned opposition party in cambodia he was going to return to cambodia this weekend with hundreds of supporters he said he was going to do that overland through thailand here but the prime minister here in thailand says he's not going to allow that to happen and is the current prime minister in cambodia he says the moment that sam rainsy or any of his supporters cross into cambodia they'll be arrested immediately he's even put troops at the

border between thailand and cambodia. staying with a story phil robertson is the deputy asia director at human rights watch he says the government should allow the leaders to return and freely resuming the political activities but i think it's highly unlikely that it's going to allow them into the country much less let them go from the airport to the border overland to. sort of organize market workers come march across the border we have seen actually on the right cambodian border that there are posters everywhere with photos and the names of these cambodian exiles saying that they will be arrested if they are brought across we've heard information about consultations going on between the thais and the cambodians about the situation. so our assessment right now is that it's probably highly unlikely that they're going to be able to get into pilot much less get to the border cambodia is trying to bully all its neighbors to keep c n

r p x files out or to arrest them and send them back we don't think that anybody is going to actually do cambodian dirty work to arrest people and actually deliver them to one's own but our view is that c.n.r. the visuals like all cambodians have the right to return to their country this is actually an international human rights guaranteed right to leave your country and also to return to it and under the international covenant on civil and political rights that cambodians ratified they should allow ransey and here's compatriots to fly directly into phnom penh and if they're arrested at that time well that's the next step in the situation here but they should not be barred from being able to return to the. international criminal court has sentenced a former congo rebel leader to city isn't prison. was convicted of 18 war crimes including murder rape and using child soldiers it happened in the democratic

for hacking the accounts of people critical of saudi arabia. and ultimatum from libya's opposition as anger against the president spread sure rural areas. and sports news more celebrations for the springboks as they parade the rugby world cup around south africa. and the u.s. have expressed concerns over iran's detention of a u.n. nuclear watchdog inspector one of the international atomic energy agency staff was briefly held last week and travel documents seized iran has since canceled the inspectors accreditation and believe this is the 1st such incidents since the nuclear deal was signed in 2015 on weapons to iran began the process of injecting uranium gas into centrifuges fordo plant that was observed by inspectors from the i.a.e.a.
4:12 pm
let's go live to dawson in tehran where are we with all this right now. well this news could not have come at a worse time for iran this inspector is one of about $150.00 who is in iran as per the nuclear agreement of 2015 this was a regular visit to the and that's hans nuclear facility last week and apparently upon her entering or trying to enter this facility she was discovered with what the iranians are calling suspicious material we have no idea what that means at this point but she was then briefly detained and then allowed to leave the country and her credentials have been revoked but this incident just highlights how sensitive iran's nuclear program is right now and the iranian president himself has did say once he announced the 4th phase of iran reducing its commitment to the nuclear deal that was the for don't you clear facility restarting that there would be a lot of criticism and that has been the case the fordo facility is
4:13 pm
a very important one for iran because it is the only place where the country's been able to produce the 20 percent enriched uranium in the past and this facility turned into a research facility after the nuclear deal was signed this is the 1st time in the past 24 hours that it's restarting its activities and iran is adamant that all these measures they're taking are reversible as soon as the remaining signatories to the nuclear deal show full compliance they are accusing them of not holding up there and the bargain since the u.s. withdrew from that deal last year we will see these reports do also that the u.k. has reduced the security risk level assessments the u.k. flagged shipping through the straits of hormuz how significant is that. well it's important because the strait of hormuz has been very much a point of contention between iran and regional powers as well as the international community there was a british flagship 10 kurdistan impera that was seized by the revolutionary guards
4:14 pm
for violating maritime law in the strait of hormuz that it was held for over a month the iranians have said that they will go on protecting the strait of hormuz and there was a lot of discussion from the western powers that they wanted to have some kind of a coalition to safeguard the passage of their ships through this and see way and the iranians are not having any of that they've said the security is of the strait of hormuz is in their hands this latest development from the u.k. government shows that there is some lawlor in the tensions in the strait of hormuz for now also thanks very much. well just a short time ago the u.s. secretary of state might give his reaction to iran's latest steps on twitter he said iran's plans to increase its nuclear activity afford to raise concerns that iran is positioning itself for a rapid nuclear breakout it's now time for all nations to reject its nuclear extortion and to increase the pressure let's go live to our white house
4:15 pm
correspondent kimberly hell could complete what's your reading of these comments from mr pompeo. yeah well the reading is well let me talk about the statement 1st because the tweet that he put out in the last hour or so really is the 2nd part of a broader statement that the state department put out peter just a little bit longer than that ago he says in this statement that iran's latest nuclear escalations reflect the regime's intentions all along to extort the international community into accepting violence and terror well it undermines the sovereignty of its neighbor so these statements coming out as the secretary of state is in germany commemorating the fall of the berlin wall so the timing is is strategic these positioned in the inside europe where he's obviously trying to send a message to allies there who have at times had some very strong views about the united states' position particularly when it comes to pulling out of the 2050
4:16 pm
nuclear agreement to limit iran's nuclear activities so strategic there and you have to remember too that this comes just 3 days after the secretary of state was speaking here in the united states saying the the strategy of the united states is working look the sanctions are working those sanctions that were put in place when the united states pulled out of that agreement in the petrochemical sector the metal sector and the banking sector but clearly now the statement is saying well things aren't working because there's real fear about. the resumption of iran and the iranian enrichment complete thanks very much. security forces in iraq have shelfs and killed at least 2 protest as in the capital baghdad the demonstrators were trying to remove barriers leading to 2 bridges in central baghdad earlier the e.u. condemned the use of excessive force as being used by the security services there it said the attacks on demonstrates has undermined the right to peaceful assembly
4:17 pm
and the expression of legitimate demands much pressure going to is that. each day since the protests began hyder raw it has been working this stretch near tahrir square selling iraqi flags good less than a dollar each the teenager dropped out of school when he was 8 to help support his family he says typically he would stand on a main street in the capital all day selling water but with iraqis he tree out at fervor flags have become big business is what we want a new country better than this one room. he killed young men every time young people come to buy flags and go back they start shooting live ammunition suffa serai is one of the nearly $280.00 protesters killed in iraq since october 1st protesters say they're fed up with corruption and a lack of jobs and they're demanding the government's resignation surprise friend
4:18 pm
say a tear gas canister hit his head last week while he was trying to protect other protesters under attack on a nearby bridge and at that idea. it has affected us greatly he was an irreplaceable person because he was educated and had a strong impact on the street especially among young people the protesters have started a radio station and are publishing at this newspaper is on top after the automated rickshaws that are transporting the wounded medics and supplies in and out of time are square with the internet blackout the last few days they've been forced offline and are now printing these old fashioned. papers it's a way for iraq ease to create a document of their experiences. walking the internet is a catastrophe it's equal to oppressing shooting and killing your thirties have totally isolated us from the world and start killing us
4:19 pm
a spokesman with the iraqi military says social media sites are showing killing and hatred that are poisoning the minds of youth almost daily men entire career stop to tell us if they died during these protests at least they would have achieved something greater than the dead end existence they'd been living at al-jazeera baghdad. french police have started dismantling migrant camps is part of a new crackdown now in paris people have taken shelter from the rain underneath an underpass and the government says it wants to put limits on the number of undocumented immigrants but some see it as an attempt to win over voters from the far right. unfortunately these large scale operations have taken place before every time we're told it won't happen again but we need proper processing procedures when people arrive in france in order for them to have their rights respected in camps like these about 20 percent of people refugees who are here
4:20 pm
legally but have not been offered any kind of housing there are also homeless families. while there are people living in tents in many cities up and several have been cleared before including what was known as the jungle in cali as well as the wrong done kirk and one area normandy however hundreds of people often return to the same sites despite squalid conditions al-jazeera is in paris. all sorts you say about 1600 migrants refugees asylum seekers living here in northern paris under this network of roads and i can tell you that the conditions are extremely school that they were intense in cardboard boxes there's no sanitation there is of course no food people are really relying on the charity of strangers or just having to break in the streets a desperate situation the mayor of paris had called repeatedly for this makeshift camp to be cleared and that is what happened on thursday morning as about 6 o'clock
4:21 pm
local time 600 police officers came move people know put them on the buses and we are told that they will be taken to several shelters in the paris region where they will be processed those who are illegal all supposed to be deported others who can perhaps apply for asylum are supposed to be helped to do so now of course is clearance comes just one day off to the french prime minister announced a series of immigrate. measures he says of the government are mostly tough on immigration and for the government this is perhaps this clearance is perhaps a sign that they want to be serious and take it very seriously when they say so but it has to be said that there are others who say that this is little more than a p.r. exercise because these camps are evacuated quite regularly and the problem is people are often taken away to shelters but then very often they end up being released and they end up back on the streets at least 47 people have been killed in coal mining employees and book you know fast so a convoy carrying staff from
4:22 pm
a canadian own mine was targeted in the east of the country they were being escorted by the local military nicholas hart has more now from. this happened on a convoy by the border with with me share and been have been in the early morning it was a convoy made up of african engineers construction workers that were going to work on this canadian mining factory and they were escorted by the military when their military convoy drove over an i.e.d. exploded and then the attackers stormed the buses there were 3 of them now at least 60 people are missing but we expect that the death toll will increase in the hours to come it happened in place where there's no cell phone connection so it took a lot of time for the security forces to get to the ground but despite no one claiming responsibility for this. this occurred the forces that we've been in contact with say that this has the hallmark of the state in the greater so horrible why because they have claimed responsibility on numerous attacks all these mines
4:23 pm
are mostly in areas bordering mali area and other border here and burkina faso where these armed groups are active it's a source of revenue for armed groups but it was also a source of revenue for the government in the past the government was able to clamp down on the attacks because it has deals we with these armed groups especially under president. who was president there for several years now he's been forced out of office and since he fell out of office these attacks have increased. protesters in lebanon once again on the streets campaigning for political change they want their government elected on merit rather than regional and sectarian requirements but politicians are already negotiating the shape of a new government and many fear it will continue to be tailored to their own interests from beirut. week 4 and protesters focus
4:24 pm
now is to paralyze the state they're blocking entrances to government institutions and companies across lebanon and demanding a government independent of political parties they blame for the country's economic crisis but the governing alliance is not budging. their opinion a purely critic government one function because everything is like 2 political parties governments in lebanon have always been a reflection of the parliaments composition the biggest block belongs to president . patriotic movement and along with its allies hezbollah are the majority in parliament and government but that government collapsed last week when prime minister. resigned he says he bowed to pressure from the street but his action also damaged the governing alliance in particular the iranian backed hezbollah which benefited from had ties with the west. to u.s.
4:25 pm
sanctions and they are becoming tougher it's beautiful little known of his outside power so we avoid the repercussions but if the majority of employees support their presence then hariri will decide if he wants to hit that kind of government politicians are holding closed door this role for government but many protesters feel they are pushing their own political agenda and they also feel opposition parties are trying to hijack their movement using the street in the talks to try and change the balance of power that is not why protesters took to the streets and there are some political parties like the progress. of socialist party and the lebanese forces that use their supporters to block roads in order to impose their agendas and put political pressure to gain seats in the new government by blackmailing their partners in power politicians from across the divide all claim to support the demands of the people but many protesters say their voices are being

ignored and they are demanding the entire political class leave office. new zealand has passed a climate change law aimed at reducing its net carbon emissions to 0 by 2050 if the bill was passed with near unanimous support an independent climate change commission would be formed to monitor progress. pollution is still sitting at a very unhealthy level officially according to data from the us embassy that's a slight drop on its peak from monday residents say a car rush in the scheme and light winds and rain have helped improve the river is covered in fic foam however signaling high pollution levels in the water. let's stay with the weather has kevin that's right we're going to go right down here towards australia where we're seeing a big difference in temperature from southeast to northwest 1st of all down here across the southeast where you see all this weather coming into play here across parts of hobart as well as it to victoria new south wales but i want to take you to

welcome back you're watching the al-jazeera news our my name's peter dhabi these are your top stories so far the cambodian opposition leader sam rainsy says he's been prevented from boarding a flight in paris he's trying to return to cambodia to the protests his deputy. was detained in malaysia. and i.c.c. at the hague has sentenced a former rebel leader to 30 years in prison his boss good gunda he was convicted 18 war crimes and crimes against humanity committed between 20022003 the e.u. and the u.s. both expressing concerns today over iran's detention of a u.n. nuclear watchdog inspector the u.s. calling it quote an outrageous provocation iran has since cancelled the inspectors accreditation. to former twitter employees have been charged in the u.s.

for spying for saudi arabia they were accused of accessing the personal account information of more than 6000 twitter users they include prominent critics of the saudi royal family prosecutors say an american and a saudi national were rewarded with tens of thousands of dollars and a designer watch they've been charged for acting as agents of riyadh without registering with the u.s. government a 3rd man a saudi has also been charged with more. the justice department announced in san francisco that it had arrested 2 former engineers for twitter they were charged with spying for the saudi arabian government and passing on information about dissidents and people who made true critical remarks on twitter about the saudi regime a 3rd person who was a saudi national was also arrested he is believed or alleged to have been the go between between the passing on the information those engineers gathered and the
4:32 pm
sending it to the saudi officials the defacto ruler of the kingdom of saudi arabia crown prince mohammed bin samana is actually mentioned in this criminal complaint although he is only referred to as royal family member number one it is believed that one of the twitter engineers flew to washington d.c. in 2015 right around the time that crown prince mohammed bin solomon was rapidly rising to his powerful status that he enjoys today and met with a member of the royal family and shortly after that the spying commenced the spies gather all sorts of information about people making critical comments about the saudi government including their e-mail addresses their ip addresses their dates of birth and so forth among the thousands of accounts that were breached was one belonging to
4:33 pm
a prominent saudi dissident omar abdel aziz he was close to the washington post journalist jamal khashoggi who of course as we know was murdered in the saudi consulate in istanbul a little over a year ago by saudi state agents according to multiple intelligence agencies joining us here on the news i'm up owen jones he's an assistant professor had been coming for university he specializes in social media. and technology across the middle east mark owen jones welcome back to the news are all we in effect here talking about a saudi mole in twitter yes we're talking about a saudi mole operating within an american company in america and what's more it's not just the mo the recent court filings have actually confirms what a lot of people suspected which is that this operation seems to go directly to the saudi royal family it can no longer be mr tributed as a rogue actor trying to get information and then using that to his advantage for
4:34 pm
private or personal reasons we're talking about 6000 accounts but if your that person or those people if you've got access to 6000 accounts why haven't you got access to all of twitter accounts well actually 6000 accounts appear to be the ones that have been known to be compromised or attempted access we don't actually know the extent of the detail or the extent of the breach which is very interesting what we also know now is that previously we had suspected that a number of accounts had been accessed by these moles inside twitter what we're seeing now is that the number is actually huge 6000 is massive we have an idea of 2 of those accounts one is a saudi activist living in canada arm abdulla's is the other is much to head and anonymous a critic of the saudi government what we don't know is who the rest of those accounts are now this is absolutely fascinating because this could indicate that saudi are interested in looking at any critic of saudi that could include for example jamal khashoggi who obviously we know was killed last year ok what do we
4:35 pm
know as well about the nature of the data that's been breached and or 'd can the mole or do the moles in this scenario go further than just looking at what somebody is saying on twitter i mean can they can they do the you know the thing that everyone hates keylogging so they can get to say a blog post someone's writing it before they publish it we're not entirely sure what. expertise or what abilities that those accessing the information. going to have what is a crucial bit of information though is the ip address while this might seem fairly redundant in some cases we know that in one of the correspondence received between 2 people involved in the case it was revealed that omar abdel aziz presumably or much the head who used ip blocking software had logged in without that software which would have revealed the ip address now if this is in a specific country this is certainly the case in some gulf countries if you have someone's ip address you then have their physical street address so what that would
4:36 pm
mean is if you were living in saudi arabia and you had your ip address revealed the authorities would be at be able to track down your house or your mobile device which of course is. you know a massive massive problem because it means that person could then be arrested interrogated and possibly tortured understood what does it say about the lack of transparency or otherwise on the part of twitter it's a massive problems which have been incredibly defensive they say that they vet people who can look at the information carefully what this is shown is that of vetting system is absolutely inadequate and they are remaining cagey about this process but what it goes to show fundamentally is that american social media companies in silicon valley are a weak spot and a blind spot that allow foreign regimes to potentially interfere in the politics of not just the u.s. for example but the rest of the world mark owen jones thank you very much thank you . a hospital operated by doctors without borders in yemen has been forced to shot after a missile and drone attack a nearby where in the red sea city of not used by

a government allied force was also hit killing 8 people yemen's military is accusing the rebels of carrying out the strike. the impeachment inquiry into the us president donald trump is moving into a public phase as of next week washington's top diplomat in ukraine william taylor will be one of the 1st to appear taylor said. earlier testimony it was his clear understanding mr trump would withhold critical military aid to ukraine unless kiev investigated his political rival joe biden and his son and that testimony also supports what other witnesses have been saying i think you will see throughout the course of the testimony not only their testimony but many others the. most important facts are largely not contested we are getting an increasing appreciation
4:38 pm
for just what took place during the course of the last year and the degree to which the president and listed the whole departments of government in the illicit aim of trying to get ukraine to dig up dirt on a political opponent as well as further conspiracy theory about the 2016 election that he believed would be beneficial to his reelection campaign stay with us story heidi joe castro has more from washington. bill taylor is the acting ambassador to ukraine and for impeachment investigators he served as a guide giving the road map with conversations dates and people connecting the dots to make this case to investigators that trump use the power of his office to try to get ukraine to help him with his political campaign for reelection now taylor testified behind closed doors 2 weeks ago but according to the transcript that was just released he said he had a clear understanding that there was
4:39 pm
a quid pro quo and he said the idea for this came from trump's private attorney who was empowered by the president to circumvent regular diplomatic channels in order to carry out this foreign policy in ukraine that prioritize trumps political interests above that of national security now moving forward investigators have announced that public hearings will begin taking place next week which is at the key of what democrats who are trying to impeach president trump want to accomplish they want more members of the american public to hear the case for impeaching the president from these witnesses themselves up until this point all of the hearings have happened behind closed doors so the information to americans have has come through hundreds of journalists but even up to this point there's a growing number of americans who according to polls do support impeaching and even
4:40 pm
removing trump from office that number is hovering right around 50 percent democrats are hoping that if they can get a clear majority of the public to support them to impeach the president then perhaps they can make a convincing argument to their republican colleagues in the senate who ultimately will be deciding the president's guilt or innocence and perhaps remove him from office. campaigning is underway in the u.k. for next month's general election december the 12th but several prominent female m.p.'s have announced they won't be standing because of an increase in the number of threats of violence and intimidation a parliamentary report found abuse against politicians is now commonplace neve barker from london it was a dark moment in british politics jo cox an opposition labor m.p. was fatally shot and stabbed outside her constituency office she'd campaign to remain in the e.u. a killer had shouted keep britain independent if he carried out the attack police
