a religious dispute that sparked some of the country's worst violence since independence and those have been awarded control of a contested site in the city of ayodhya where they say the god wrong was born but the land has also been claimed by muslims for hundreds of years in december 1902 internationalists destroyed a 16th century mosque built on the site they said it was built there only after a temple dedicated to wrong was destroyed by muslim invaders mosques destruction sparked into religious violence across the country even 2000 people dead in 2010 a lower court ruled it should be divided into 3 parts 2 for hindus and one for muslims but that was challenged in the supremes court by both communities saturday's ruling paves the way for a hindu temple to be built on the site it also awards muslims 20000 square metres of land in the same city where a mosque can be constructed. now reports for us from new delhi it's

a case that has borne rice hindus and muslims in india for decades now the supreme court has made its decision on the land dispute in uttar pradesh. hindu see this piece of land as the birthplace of their day. in december 1902 hindu hardline groups destroyed a mosque that had stood here for more than 400 years the muslim community here insists this is the site of where that mosque should be rebuilt for the court has ordered the creation of a government trust to oversee the construction of a hindu temple instead while awarding to have tears of land somewhere else to build a mosque in its decision the court said the hindus this claim on the site was on a better footing than the evidence provided by the muslim side prime minister nuri the more the welcome the word ticked and says it brings a new door for india so big. it as

mom labor 5 plus one i have today the supreme court has ruled on an important case that has a history of hundreds of years behind it the whole country wished that the matter should be heard in the court on a day to day basis which took place and today the decision is out just regarding how to go out of every class every community people of every sect the whole country has accepted the verdict with open hearts it reflects on the ancient culture traditions and sense of harmony in india. the muslim community has expressed disappointment. with. the core technologies the site is important to both religions but it's a setback for muslims some of them would have preferred the high court order of
12:07 am
2010 which granted 2 thirds of the land to the hindus and one 3rd of it to muslims management no no it should have been given to the both they should allow for temple and the mosque that the government give the land for the mosque elsewhere and that's wrong. the state government has deployed its forces a new tack to ensure security but the situation remains tense this is been an emotional issue for many hindus and muslims the government of mary the movie has called on both sides to exercise restraint but some minority groups in this country say that they are being marginalized and discriminated against for millions of muslims this decision is likely to reinforce that concern after war on al jazeera new delhi. so for more on this i'm joined now in the studio by dilip hiro a journalist and commentator on indian affairs thank you very much for coming in to speak to us so the conflict of ayodhya has been going on for more than 150 years
12:08 am
now we have this ruling from the supremes court does it lay the matter to rest rest or does it risk inflaming hostilities between hindus and muslims i think that through i think with each of you what happened was the new december 1992. moth which was built in 1528. was destroyed by a mob of 4 told the hindu militants and it were the really. shocking event and then all the writing that happened in india with their own bungle that to hold them people got killed you know it was it was a serious thing up you know and then from there the problem is started and you think and 37 years to complete i'm going to conclusion. has it reached a conclusion is this a ruling that the muslims well except i mean the mood among muslims seem to be quite some vigorous me do you think they will appeal this ruling no i think basically you know they have to see they have to act in the me if i can set up the
12:09 am
thing there are basically 3 things to consider one is that you know the muslims say that the mosque was built an open space ok and the hindu thing is that the most was built by destroying a temple of lord rama now when it comes to lord romo there is no historical evidence that he existed. so hard but the main think it was in the ruling themselves this is if we accept the hindu belief they don't say the reactor hindu fact the belief you know and this belief is very important because there are more. is one of the epics of hindu religion it is very important pick you know and who is the basically the very emotional thing. and of course he was just mentioning that the mob in 1900 which destroyed this this mosque that had been there for hundreds
12:10 am
of years before now with this ruling it's obviously a great victory fendi nationalist and prominence and around remote but does it also set a wiring precedent. no i think you see. basically what's happened in a minute quite simply if i can hear the business in india. sort of 14 for the population and do the 4 times as many and not of problem hindu muslim the cousin who will wear long climate some of the rules that jensen had going on the new pakistan happen and so there is a very long term tension the hindu the muslims and the hindu nurse and the d.d.p. party exploded that said does this ruling now set a precedence in the sense that it could it could pave the way for claims on all the pieces of land no no i think you know this this is in
12:11 am
a very unique you know because it really did because the virgin drama rama and i mean so much to being hindus you know it's a hindu identity and then you see and then again because there is no every done to deserve it but the other important the 3rd point of order to make was that the archaeological to authority of india. they had to decide if there was another structure there for 10 and the 3rd because they can in conclusion see through that and then how do at that point that to satisfy muslims took important ok you would get far if there is of land near this new temple you can build a mosque there you see so they're trying to pacify that thing and but is still i think i don't think this will go any further you know and i don't all to think the muslims who protest too much right now muslims on the back foot thank you face

really. shows you know to defend his case of people you know want to change that they're extremely worried about impunity that many of those who have been accused doing the carwash operation investigation in this country will be able to go and that's something that people here are extremely afraid of and it's interesting that there are people that protesting as well against newt are movie been speaking about his release rianna gys ing the last but of course if it generates more polarized nation then that's a good thing football scenario as well. well most definitely that release has increased once again the polar ice ation in this country and what we're seeing on the one side are not far away from here and some of them out of the thousands of lula da silva supporters who are defending why he was in office saying that he is an offense that his trial was filled 'd with the regularities hoping that he'll become the leader of the opposition to challenge it

was a lot of people here who say he's a criminal that he should be in prison that he needs to be here and remain there they want that they're protesting against the supreme court they're asking congress to change the law so convicted criminals can be imprisoned after they lose their 1st appeal so this larry station is 7 people here are extremely angry with what has happened most of the people here support presidentially it was one out of the main reason is because they say that what happened while you let us see what was in office was an enormous pay enormous case of corruption the car wash the car wash investigation that involved. a sense of businessmen among others and that's why people here are protesting they're afraid that many of those will now walk free. all right thank you very much from sao paolo. meanwhile police in bolivia of abandoned their posts outside the presidential palace as discontent grows among

a joyous moment which many thought might never happen the removal of a physical barrier that divided a city a country a continent in the end it was a wave of people power which swept over the bear and yet it was the people in power who let that wave top of that within weeks that same geoghan was topped within months the 2 germans would become one. angle america was one of the many east germans who walked into west berlin on that night in 1909 for her now as chancellor the night of november is a time for remembrance to feel him and to many people became a victim of the dictatorship and we were not forget i remember the people who were killed here at this hour because they were looking for freedom as the i also remember the 75000 people and if there were any present because they tried to flee their country enough to the sudden fall of the wall transformed the city almost overnight and for some berliners it was hard to process. this.
12:35 am
it took me a long long time to integrate east berlin into the windy city the feeling was that it was a completely different world and it took me about 10 years to integrate the border in my head about if i had spent your mood for those growing up in the newly liberated east life was suddenly very different gone with the certainties of centralized communist planning replaced by rapid privatization and rising unemployment some analysts say this rush to capitalism had clear consequences the starting position of its germany after unification was very bad because of the one to one is german the west german mark conversion which essentially meant an immediate appreciation of these german currency and rendered most is german firms completely it's not obsolete it is completely noncompetitive. the industries that now flourish in the east bear little resemblance to their communist predecessors
12:36 am
these days eastern g.d.p. is 82 percent of its western counterpart monthly salaries in the east are around 20 percent lower than in the west and the gap between the 2 is greater now than at any point in this century underlying this economic reality is the political one for the last 4 years a succession of states in the old east have seen a stark rise in support for the far right and left fueled in some minds by the refugee crisis and a lingering sense that reunification has not brought what was promised 30 years ago east germans began the process of abandoning communism here 30 years on there are many who have begun to wonder if democracy is any better dominate can al-jazeera. or catherine field was the bell in correspondent for the observer newspaper when the wall came down she joins us live from paris and so you were there you witnessed
12:37 am
what took place could you just take us back in time to what it was like and that the feeling and the emotion around you. it was absolutely extraordinary and we were driving back into east berlin we'd been up north of berlin to various demonstrations that were going up there and we drove back through what designers princella a working class suburb and it was literally like going through a film set because people were hanging out of their windows running out of doors the richest people everywhere was like something out of a cartoon really and people were banging on our car doors saying please take us to cars there which was the main crossing point to be able to get the train into west berlin and so we just put these people in the car we drove through the friedrichstrasse the station and i remember they were just savile's of people there trying to get through and the people that we've given a ride to the station to said you know we don't know what's going to happen is the troops going to shoot it as more it's going to reach us when we get there and we
12:38 am
said what we really don't know we are in such uncharted territory and soon as they went off we gave them all our voyage once that we had and we said have a good time in west berlin and after that i went up the road to what was then invalid and stars are not far from friedrichstrasse and they were all izzy's bill and those who had just come out onto the street they had seen on the west german television that the war was open they'd be able to get there and they were literally tens of thousands of people just walking across some taking cosmic car and on the other side were all these west berliners who had bottles or champagne they were giving them deutschmarks to go shopping and just welcoming them and it was a night i don't think i'll ever have a night with so much euphoria because after that there was still time to get to the burn and wall at the brandenburg gate and climb on top and just feel that emotion that after joint was half right on that oh it was it for the on the on that note we actually we have the photograph the image of you. you know you.
12:39 am
you definitely you know the expression on your face reflects the emotion. of the night i guess and i'm struck by what you say about some of the people that you're picking up on the car and taking that to the wall by their excitement and almost like that desperation i suppose now it's really difficult to remember or to imagine what it was like for citizens for people living in east germany before the wall came down can you describe it for us i'm not sure how much time you spent that but i imagine it was just like the west didn't exist. well a lot of people knew a lot about the west because west german television was beamed into is germany and unless you lived in the area around dresden you picked up west german t.v. and most people did watch west german t.v. simply because is german television was just this has stalled of communist party propaganda all the time life was very difficult in east berlin and in east germany
12:40 am
because you didn't have any of the freedoms that we now associate with they couldn't watch whatever television they wanted they couldn't choose which schools couldn't choose their friends and every time that you made a telephone call you knew as soon as you picked up that telephone there was probably a high chance that someone would be listening at the state security you have to always remember that east germany had a very very precise and determined secret service so they were not only listening to your telephone calls they were watching who you met they were seeing who you were talking to the whole time you're under some sort of surveillance so even simple things like deciding which school child was going to go through that was up to the party party officials to decide so it was such a different world that one that nowadays we find it so difficult to believe that it lasted so long in eastern germany given that as you were saying just there was west
12:41 am
berlin a fabulous city that was had night clubs bars that everything you wanted was a new west berlin and yet just a couple of 100 meters away there was this bill and no freedom of speech no freedom of movement nothing. right and you describe that the celebration and the euphoria when this event took place and we were just saying in dominic keynes package that there is now perhaps a sense of frustration perhaps the mood is more subdued on this anniversary as expectations as a sense of expectations were not fulfilled and yes the wall might have physically come down but the divide very much still exists when you look at employment unemployment when you look at wages the economy quality of living there is still a difference right between east and west so i'm just wondering if you're in touch with people who are there now and how they feel. well one of the big problems was that these german economy it was not only centralized but it was also involved in
12:42 am
some of the industries that now just literally do not make money or are environmentally unsound for example the coal mining industry in the east of eastern germany that's closing down all the coal mines are being run down and workers of being laid off so you getting some of these people who that was the only job they knew they were trained for that job on top of that when the wall came down the to clean eastern germany a lot of the people that 1st left where young women women who had been well educated within the state system they went west they never came back so you can bring a whole areas particularly in eastern part of alongside the berlin alongside the polish border for example where there are just no women you have men aged between say 50 and 70 who have never been married because all the women went west so they're not only alone they're also finding it very difficult because a lot of the industries that they were trained to work and as young workers are
