al-jazeera. hello i'm barbara sara this is the al-jazeera news hour live from london thank you for joining us coming up in the next 60 minutes protests across iran as the government increases fuel prices one person is killed. protesters confront police again in hong kong as china confirms that order to clean up by its army. violence and a $129.00 arrests in paris this demonstrators marked the 1st anniversary of the yellow vest movement plus. we will beat you on the 29 march 2000. and 9 other breaks it battleground how rival parties are using the online world to

get their election messages across. and our people stand in doha with all your support controversial quarterback colin kaepernick prepares to showcase the skills in front of n.f.l. teams 3 years since he's last game that in more later in the program. riot police and security forces have clashed with demonstrators in dozens of cities across iran after an increase in fuel prices one person has been killed and several others injured as they tried to enter an oil refinery in the southern city of syria john the government says the rise of at least 50 percent is needed to call but few will smuggling for such a bari reports. anger frustration and growing concern in tehran as people protested against a 200 percent increase in fuel prices. many simply turned off their engines on

major highways across the city to show their disappointment at this sudden decision to raise petrol prices overnight. as heavy snow blanketed the capital people still lined up at the gas stations to fill up. the quota for remarriage sorry this is not a wise decision considering our horrible economy and sanctions we are under it's a cruel decision because it won't affect the wealthy people only the poor people will pay the price. this will 100 percent impact everything else it's not just about the press of gas or commodities will be impacted for those shoes this will only her low income families they were supposed to increase subsidies 1st then raise the price of fuel they will find another excuse to cut their subsidies later . the protests have not been limited to the capital this was the scene in the southern city of abidjan inclose us on province overnight here state t.v. announced a number of individuals it described as unknown elements fired into crowds of
12:03 am
people injuring some. the shock of this news has yet to sink in here with the new prices motorists now pay about $0.13 a liter that's a 3 fold increase the government expects to earn nearly $2500000000.00 from the price increase and says that it will help millions of families in need had that sort of out of the 1st payments will be handled within the next week or $10.00 days and transferred to the families in model year a strong president believes that if there is going to be petrol price reform all of the new revenues will be paid back in full to the people. that many people here fear that this decision could have far reaching consequences it stems from a number of issues while iran has huge energy reserves its refining capability is limited and that makes it difficult to get fuel to the pumps. the government is also fighting fuel smuggling to neighboring countries that's because iran has some
12:04 am
of the cheapest prices in the world due to its heavy subsidies and a weak currency the economy here has been struggling for years but since the united states withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal last year and reimpose a series of new sanctions on iran things have been getting much worse inflation is just over 40 percent with unemployment rates at over 14 percent officials here say that this fuel price increase will help people but it's proving very difficult to convince ordinary iranians door so to pary al-jazeera tower on our own merits as an independent panelist covering iran's previously worked as the tehran correspondent for the magazine the economist and he joins us now thank you so much for joining us here on the al-jazeera so these hikes i mean in a sense the sentiment. find the most positive because the government is doing it to have more money to help the poor obviously that message isn't getting across or ultimately hike is a hikes where do you see this going. so from the government's perspective there are
12:05 am
a few things going on 1st of all the government is under extreme pressure because of the. sanctions placed on any company wishing to trade with iran so there's a revenue problem for the government and the government expends of a lot of money subsidizing some of the cheapest fuel in the world there's also the issue of corruption because iran's fuel is so cheap pick it smuggled out of iran by by extremely sophisticated unorganized actors by enormous amounts to turkey and iraq so it's an anti corruption push and it's fundamentally a pro por policy however any fuel hike as we have seen in many other parts of the world especially in a situation where the middle class has been in this aerated and poverty has hasn't been higher on for a long time directly as a consequence of the maximum pressure policy by the u.s. administration is going to cause people to be unhappy particularly people who used
12:06 am
to work middle class jobs and now have to drive taxis around tear on and they require a lot of fuel to get around it seems like a double blow and the pro the rebate which this is going to be tied to direct transfers to poor people hasn't been felt and for a lot of people because the because the amount of fuel they are allowed is going to be limited a lot of people now need fuel because they need to earn a living iranians sort of over decades have had a god given right to cheap gasoline and that's being challenged but so is it that the government has the right intentions but didn't quite think it through or did they just have no watch but to do this this is this. has been sought for this has been going on since the 2nd term of act within a job by and i think the reason why it's taken so long is because they have had to
12:07 am
think fruity the the financial consequences of the policy and they have explicitly tied that within according to the government 10 days the poorest families in iran will be receiving a rebate which will cover staples that will cover rice it will but it will it will provide a semblance of the safety net to the poorest of iranians which has been taken away by larger macroeconomic assault on the economy as a consequence of u.s. sanctions. to be honest it's a band-aid on an enormous wound enormous wound in this knology being the u.s. sanctions and the band-aid being a pro paul policy which will change something but at the end of the day with the policy of maximum pressure which the americans are pursuing has as i mentioned previously investor rated a lot of the private wealth which is owned by the poorest people in society we
12:08 am
heard not just in our report earlier but just generally from some iranians saying that actually iran is involved in a lot of you know foreign endeavors elsewhere especially in the region that perhaps they should not do and prioritize people back at home do you see that ever happening really iran's foreign and as a done on a shoestring i mean some analysts even say that the. best foot print in iraq. they make money out of they make much like the iranians make money out of having a stable iraq they're involved in some of the influence in iraq allows them to be involved in some of the decision making a lot of iranian crude is sold through iraq. having friendly relations with their neighbor does not constitute a massive public expenditure by the iranians so i think it's a false comparison to make aaron merit iran and listen former tehran correspondent for the economist thank you. that's going to call the police and protesters have
12:09 am
faced off again over roadblocks outside one of the city's universities police used tear gas and demonstrators who responded with fire bombs violence in the past week has focused on at least 5 of the city's university campuses with protesters continuing to occupy the polytechnic university well earlier chinese soldiers were seen not in uniform but in gym clothes helping residents that this mental protester barricades problem bride has more now from hong kong. they weren't out for very long probably less than an hour late didn't have to travel far this is the base here and the soldiers basically came out to the road outside and started clearing away bricks and debris from this road around the perimeter of this base but it will be seen potentially as symbolic especially given the extraordinary times that this city is living through and many people will be reading it through the prism of
12:10 am
their own politics on the one hand it could be seen as a very innocuous gesture community spirit by the local garrison here coming out and clearing bricks the way they weren't dressed in uniform they were in their sports fatigues and they have been out before last year they came out to help with the clean up after a big typhoon in hong kong but of course this wasn't debris from a typhoon this was debris that had been left bricks that have been put in the road by protesters from the nearby university campus and there have been angry confrontations between protesting students and citizens whoever they are trying to clear away the roadblocks they have put in place despite that all the chatter on social media seems to indicate that there's not been an angry reaction from protesters many of these students simply saying well let them clear it away we'll simply return the bricks when we're good and ready but there will be others in the pan democratic camp who will see this as
12:11 am
a further step towards what they believe are the erosion of hong kong's freedoms within china. so to come on the al-jazeera news hour turkey blames kurdish y p g fighters for a car bombing in northeast syria it's killed 19 people. and some present britain's prince andrew admits he made a mistake by staying at the home of a convicted sex offender and roger federer of me says match in the semifinals of the finals even then he took the action. there's been violent scenes in paris where police and demonstrators clashed on the 1st anniversary of the yellow vests protest movement here gas and water cannon were used against hundreds of protesters after they built barricades across the french capital and set fire to cars the movement began last november over rising fuel
12:12 am
prices and the high cost of living reports from paris. it was meant to have been a moment for the yellow vests movement to shine again after a dramatic drop of support at weekly rallies with we've been spurred anniversary brought a violent fringe up to the streets of paris with protesters building barricades against police. after firing tear gas at as they started to target the crowd directly at a cutty's to hit me in the head we are struggling to determine even though this isn't really representative of the whole movement across the country this is the side of the protesters alienated much of from this movement it's trying to achieve these people hard core group of individuals who are themselves members of the prevent who are clearly bent on vandalism. but it didn't start like this it began as a leaderless revolt against the rising cost of living and the planned tax on diesel an attempt by president to manual mccrum to reduce carbon emissions it morphed into
12:13 am
a movement against mccrone himself drawing many to. tens of thousands of people from the far right far left and everything in between microbus forced to scrap the green tax and do more to help the poor but the yellow vests confused identity has led to its slow decline it has failed to transform into a political movement it has. been unorganized it has destroyed every spokesperson that has emerged and it has failed to go into elections so on one side it's a huge impact on 'd the political landscape and on the other side has failed to put its mark on that landscape. has dampened tensions by holding town hall debate up and down the country half a 1000000 people have taken part allowing my chrome to win back some support in opinion polls but activists have accused the government of excessive force against
12:14 am
demonstrators 24 people have been blinded 5 have lost homes the victims blaming a liberal use of stun grenades and rubber bullets. the french economy is among the fastest growing in europe but poverty is growing to its powerful trade unions are calling for strikes and protests in december over pension reforms the yellow vests say they would join them micro may face a turbulent winter had. paris. alan is a journalist based in paris is been observing the protests a close quarters and seeing some of the violence firsthand he joins us live now via skype thank you so much for being here with us tell us a little bit about what you witnessed today. cleaving yes well i witness tense violence. when you're out there there was no nost you see lots of property being damage or bad for example also cars set alight but also
12:15 am
police attacked in a very unpleasant way and of course you always get the passers by who get caught up in all the law of the worst violence today was in shopping centers around 2 particularly large squares in paris and there are a lot of people out trying to enjoy their saturdays and getting caught are getting tear gassed getting hit by missiles all that kind of thing so lou very ugly scenes and of course this was the set of i guess commemorate the start of the of the movement a year ago and at the start of last year or of this year we it was nearly a weekly occurrence it has been dwindling where do you see the movement right now and certainly has been dwindling in the sort of 4 months where the really big months as it were and they were very similar scenes to the kind that we have today except about 10 times the numbers on st my 1st told you having followed this movement thomas starr is certainly being out with the most saturdays in the early
12:16 am
days and out today is it when dealing the this is almost the last hole are. that doesn't mean to say there will be lots more protests in houses a protest city street protests all part of paris light but i think this illusion themselves. the novelties are gone want it will be very interesting thing i did notice that they were very remote to people actually wearing their yellow vests they said to put them on they get targeted by the police so that perhaps is one of the best indicators of where this movement is going but so do you think that the discontent behind the protests that was there in the beginning is garner or do you think that they will sort of i don't know perhaps join. other movements perhaps i don't know vote for the far right that many of them had refused to do so far we're do you think that sentiment actually goes oh the sentiment is still there the disc and sent is muscle in france now dare i say not sound trite but as it always is
12:17 am
france was a very unhappy country you mention let us go in the colony of course it's doing very very well economically at the moment a lot of people have left out of that and historically they've always been able left out of the success of the country and one of the points now is that everybody is far more aware of that because of an enhanced media because of social media and of course that social media makes it much easier sorry for people to get out and street and protest what i think will happen is they'll be lots more protest movements your report mentioned trade unions they're organizing a big rally next saturday and there will be other manifestations of this huge swell of unhappiness with an entire society bitter and journalist based in paris feat of the moment thank you vote counting has begun in sri lanka's presidential
12:18 am
election where rising religious tensions and the slowing economy took center stage around 15000000 sri lankans were eligible to vote and it's expected that more people will vote in this poll than they did in the last election 4 years ago when el fernandez has the latest from columbia the crucial phase of the 200-1000 presidential election is underway the count as you can see the ballot boxes coming in buses like this to the main counting center here in colombo one of the main centers royal college the election commission chairman my hand and there's a prayer as spoken of other conduct of the election today the 1st place in the bus fare to the wreck and i. yell. we have. we. see years. and counting all of the votes is going on right throughout the night this process e's being duplicated in
12:19 am
counting centers in every single district obviously security as you can see around me is very tight to ensure the security of the ballot now what we've heard in terms of voter turnout we've heard that there has been around 80 percent the main question is going to be which of the frontrunners go to the rajapaksa the former defense secretary or sergeant prim of the us of the minister of housing which of them secures more than 50 percent of the vote if they are not able to do that the count goes into a 2nd round where preferential votes will be counted that becomes a little bit more complicated but she lankans throughout the country are waiting to find out the results of those processes well that's been out front on this said there the election has come down to a race between the former defense minister that scott. and the current housing minister premadasa with national security high on the agenda but it's missed takes a look at the key candidates. to pile rajapaksa no. to the buddhist priest
12:20 am
but he can rely on support from voters within sri lanka's majority think. but he also needs support from minority muslims and tamils too if he's to win this presidential election many of them are nervous of the prospect of a return to power of the rajapaksa. got a pie was defense chief and his brother mahinda was president at the end of the civil war which the u.n. estimates killed 40000 people that party also courts nationalists is a big blue langkow get in with. the. staff of sri lanka's center for monitoring election violence say the poll has been free but not necessarily fair with reports of people being pressured on how to vote we have never seen that much influential factors like leaders leaders are coming forward from or one particular political party such as prima das is the only other realistic contender
12:21 am
in this election he gets support from rural buddhists and minority groups who could swing the result in his favor. the ruling coalition is choice but this is a government that ignored warnings about the easter sunday suicide attacks that killed 263 people prompting rajapaksa to announce his candidacy we are hoping for a new future 3 lanka and. there are a candidate and the same there are many candidates so it's going to be a very competitive place so i just hope there. you know whoever gets elected can deliver on their promises and ensure a safe nation and a prosperous nation and everyone can sort of believe in peace 60000000 people were eligible to vote they had 35 candidates to choose from. the run up to sri lanka's last presidential election was marred by violence and widespread intimidation this
12:22 am
time it's been more peaceful it is though a tight race where passions are running high earner to make out is there a colombo. at least 1000 people have been killed and several wounded in a car bomb attack in northeast syria. the explosion occurred in the turkish controlled town of al-bab near aleppo the turkish defense ministry says the attack was carried out by syrian kurdish fighters but there has been no claim of responsibility from any group turkey and its syrian rebel allies of down to 3 separate offensives in northern syria against kurdish militia in the winter. i think that what it tells us is that we have a very confusing and complex situation where there is no overall control in the state we've got as you pointed out several players the russians the syrian regime the turks and also some others who are involved in the state and whenever you get this lack of governance in control as we discovered in iraq and in the honest down
12:23 am
you create a situation where terrorism. is rife where you will have these sort of events happening and so what we will see is more of these incidents. as the confusion over who controls what who's responsible for what and who is saying was becomes ever more increased over time so i think the solution to this really has to be to restore the territorial 'd and. and governance integrity of the state of syria if we are to ever hope for reduction in these sort of terrorist incidents. britain's prince andrew has spoken publicly about his relationship with convicted sex offender geoffrey epstein speaking to the b.b.c. the duke of york said the letter that he let the royal family down by staying at epstein's home after his conviction he expressed regret saying it was the wrong
12:24 am
thing to do catherine stansell explains but at the time and precedented interview with a senior member of the british royal family and his connections with the convicted sex offender prince andrew spoke to u.k. media about american billionaire jeffrey epstein you were staying at the house and convicted sex offender at the end of the day. with the benefit of all the hindsight that one could have. it was definitely the wrong thing to do. but at the time i felt it was the people stick on the right thing to do and i kick myself for the day . because it was not something that was becoming a member. american billionaire jeffrey epstein hanged himself in his jail cell in august while awaiting trial he was accused of sexually exploiting and abusing dozens of underage girls in 2008 epstein was convicted of soliciting sex from underage girls despite this prince andrew remained friends with epstein he went
12:25 am
before the cameras to try to rescue his reputation but royal watchers believe his interview may make matters worse that's that's i think that this interview will be a trainwreck i think that it will have the effect of putting far more pressure than his already experienced on prince andrew while aided to visit a convicted sex offender why did he find it convenient to stay with him and why on earth should the queen's 2nd some think that this was all on rable way to behave which it wouldn't be for any human being virginia roberts giuffre says. she was one of jeffrey epstein's under-age victims and she says she was forced to have sex with prince andrew 3 times she says she met you in 2001 she says she dined with you danced with you at night club in london she went on to have sex with you in
12:26 am
a house in belgravia a longing to go out and marks all your friend your response i have no recollection of ever me she said none whatsoever i don't remember meeting her this is prince andrew with the woman he says he can't remember meeting his lack of recollection is a departure from the denials issued in the past. buckingham palace has always denied the allegations against prince andrew calling them false and without foundation this was a very carefully orchestrated interview that took place here and it was sanctioned by the queen herself. this is the 1st time prince andrew has spoken so directly about his relationship with epstein but the way he handled the interview may well lead to more questions than answers catherine stansell al jazeera london and plenty more still to come on the al-jazeera news hour including as the rocket exchanges and the air strikes continue between israel and gaza

is quite cold we've had snow in spain we already got snow in france and a high temperature in 0 of only 4 degrees on sunday to the south where it's warm rain and the amount of it is a big problem particularly in croatia but i think it is going to be involved obviously sort of back into north africa snow's been falling in vast quantities not a half to one half meters is quite likely and not just on the high ground not temporary get on low ground as well in contrast to that is warming up again in the east not everywhere but book 20 and should be about 8 out of warsaw about 14 so this part of europe has got the contrast in weather as the west again for you just a quick look at how far it goes it drags its heels in the atlas mountains on both sunday and monday with sundry rain. from the ounces in around london. to special guests in conversation resistance and

now reminder of the top stories on al-jazeera one person has died in nationwide protests against the fuel price hike in iran the cost of fuel has gone up by at least 50 percent with rations on household. police again fired tear gas the protesters in hong kong as they tried to clear roadblocks outside one of the city's universities earlier chinese troops were seen on the streets helping to clear barricades and more than 100 people have been arrested after violent clashes in paris on the 1st anniversary of the best protest movement.

now in the impeachment inquiry into us president donald trump the committee organizing it has just released 2 new transcripts of closed door testimony from the former top russian expert on the u.s. national security council and then aide to vice president mike pence well he joins us live now from washington with the latest so what's in the transcripts. well the hundreds of pages long they were just released in the last several minutes so we're still beginning we're just beginning to comb through them but as with all of these depositions that are now being released publicly we do know what was said broadly in the actual in the actual hearings in the actual deposition so we're not expecting any new bombshells we're not expecting any new information although we will of course tell you if that proves not to be the case we're just expecting more color and more detail about what we already know so we knew that tim morrison the national security council top expert on russia and the e.u. told congress that as far as he was concerned he was also told as other

administration officials have testified that there was a there was a quid pro quo to the aid to ukraine would only be released if there was an announcement about an investigation into joe biden and his on the hunt to biden and in fact specifically to biden's employ at the ukrainian the allegedly corrupt ukrainian energy for me the question was why is he being employed there while his father is vice president of a corrupt and edge of the corrupt energy company so he did know about that only if he was told about that so again it's republicans can say here say he was it was just an opinion that was going around but he was also told by then white house official fiona hill to stay away from any shadow foreign policy work being done by rudy giuliani don't trump attorney and this is the key part i supposed when he saw the july 25th call transcript between donald trump and president skiff ukraine which began in part this whole impeachment inquiry he was concerned but he wasn't
12:33 am
concerned because he thought there was anything wrong about it he was concerned that it would leak and it would have negative ramifications for the administration and people would start asking questions but this is one of the reasons why all of the his testimony at the end of last month the republicans in the white house were pretty happy with his testimony because he said yeah i saw the transcript i just didn't think i don't think anything was wrong about it but we. still it would be kind of negative if it leaked out and he probably has more to say about why exactly than that transcript was put into a separate secret as opposed to the normal transcript which you just put in all a different server why was it made more classified than usual i guess we'll get more information about that so that's to morris and the other deposition that has been released jennifer williams she special adviser to vice president mike pence the russia and the e.u. . again we know pretty much what she said she said she actually listened in to that july 25th corps and she was surprised she did think it was in appropriately political as opposed to diplomatic so that's the part that that would worry people
12:34 am
i suppose in the administration however she said that as far as she was concerned mike pence the vice president never mentioned any investigations into biden or bill recently as you kind of cleared my pens as always this question what was mike pence doing in all of this at least pence's advisor claimed pens while she never leaves her pants say anything about and the politically motivated potentially or allegedly investigations into the biden's shepherd hansie with the latest on those 2 transcripts that have just been released she have sank you now rival protest groups have been out on the streets of the venezuelan capital caracas in support of and again stressing nicolas maduro demonstrators against him and for opposition leader one carried banners to say venezuela should follow bolivia's lead after the leader of that south american country resigned a week ago why don't you who is recognized as venezuela's acting president by about 50 countries told supporters that venezuela would not falter and call for them to

keep protesting. israel has targeted have asin air strikes early on saturday after rockets were fired from gaza this comes 2 days after the beginning of a cease fire that was supposed to end a week of strikes a flare up that started with an israeli attack on a leader of the slimy jihad group and as every $46.00 reports now from gaza it's begun to highlight the friction between hamas and islamic jihad. israel's assassination of the senior islamic jihad commander. led to a fierce round of escalation and more than 33rd the deaths inside gaza. it's also revealed and made worse the frictions between hamas which governs the gaza strip and islamic jihad which threw rocket crews had been the trigger for repeated escalations in recent months. has been pursuing a negotiated truce with israel it chose to stand back after the assassination i was
12:36 am
i mean jihad fired hundreds of rockets and was in turn targeted by israeli airstrikes 'd a senior hamas figure tells me the difference is a well on the way to being resolved but that hamas had no interest in going to war you talk about being dragged towards a bigger conflict by whom by islamic jihad by their action and way beyond the way i'm talking about no i think that it is not either said to take a decision to or to enter a war with israel so it's not easy i think we have to have calculations about the pros about that going to school as is about the results and the tactics how different our civil people how to or not to put more there than our people i think we have to put all these calculations in the chair but it is not easy i think it's not a lot for any policy of virtual goods in a lot i want to fire missiles. but in the aftermath of heavy israeli airstrikes one of which killed 8 civilians including 5 children there have been calls across gaza
12:37 am
for hamas to do just that in the early hours of saturday morning 2 rockets were fired at the israeli town of a shaver intercepted by the anti missile iron dome system a few hours later israeli warplanes struck hamas site here in gaza a sign babs that hamas is good she wing had responded to public pressure. there's been several protests since thursday cease fire and in a sign of the continuing tension a senior hamas figure was even barred from. paying his respects at a ball arthur's mourning tent is going to get this very angry that hamas did not join the fight against israel and with the shooting that the 48 hour israeli escalation. it seems to me that we might even see further friction and further complicated relationship in the future. israel said it killed in order to stop the rocket attacks he directed perhaps also hoping it would in hans hamas is control of the gaza's weaponry the question now is whether his death

has removed an obstacle dividing gaza's 2 biggest factions or whether the events of the last few days have done yet deeper damage to the relationship or it will sit gaza it's been more than 40 years since people in lebanon have access to a full day of electricity that's one of the reasons why protesters have now been on the streets for nearly a month and they say that they want the demonstrations to result in a country that works stephanie decker has the story from beirut. they're making a point of being here around the clock the 24 hour protest calling for 24 hours of electricity the problem is we don't have 24 hours electricity provided by the government this is. so due to this fact we have each person has to have it house we have to have a generator to fill the gap where we don't have electricity. so we will end
12:39 am
up paying for electricity so the electricity is like 6 hours a day. just the government electricity and we have provided for the electricity for our eating our money literally eating our money reform of the electricity sector is part of caretaker prime minister sad how do these reform plan but with the ongoing political stalemate those reforms are as abstract as the idea of an interrupted electricity let alone has had functioning 24 hour electricity since before the civil war that's before $975.00 that's why everyone has to rely on alternative sources and that translates to a mess crisscrossed electricity cables running streets and it's like this across most parts of the country this couple tells us the situation is unbearable. your government doesn't provide enough electricity or gas why we have to use generators but if you go to the areas where the politicians live electricity is

a valuable 24 seventh's so they don't feel all problems as they don't live in a blackout the demand of those on the streets government supplied uninterrupted 24 hour electricity for all it's a demand that isn't new my parents have been asking the same you know it's insane that my parents 3040 years ago have the. things that they need the same things i would ask you right now you know we talked. the government. and. the people are surviving and. working imagine how much. when the government gives them just the basic living standards electricity is just one of a long list of grievances including water infrastructure waste management we're told that decades of widespread corruption and mismanagement means that hardly
