2:00 pm
al jazeera. a day of dramatic violence in hong kong as police and protesters fires around a university campus. and i missed the italian this is al jazeera live from doha also coming up. rajapaksa declared the winner in sri lanka presidential election. iran's leaders stand by their decision to increase fuel prices and impose rationing despite a furious response. and
2:01 pm
a plea from exiled even moralez tells al-jazeera he wants to return to bolivia and finish his presidential to. police in hong kong have used tear gas and water cannon on protesters as a university campus who've been throwing petrol bombs large fires have been in this around the hong kong polytechnic university and some of the most dramatic scenes of the 5 months of on rest all schools have been told to stay shut on monday because of the violence but our correspondent david pollan is on the ground there and joins us live now from hong kong to talk us through the situation there now it seems that there is said to be yet another faceoff this time around the harbor tunnel bridge. that's right so what we're seeing here is a standoff between protesters and police the protesters are blockading a major road that's right next to their universe which is behind me they have
2:02 pm
created a fortress there within that fortress there been organizing. what the police are calling weapons but crudely made petrol bombs bricks stones that they can throw at the police or in the direction of the police now to my left there's a whole row of riot police standing by they were much closer here they fired tear gas throughout the day earlier in the day there were rubber bullets and they've also brought in water cannon and there's a water cannon truck also further on that's still waiting sends out a warning every now and then but throughout the day that too has been firing out blue dye trying to get the protesters to move away from this area and clear this area and what it's basically achieved this the protesters have moved back about 15 meters from their original spot but the main epicenter of this protest is not necessarily here it's that toll booth it's that highway that you were talking about
2:03 pm
that's highway leads to a tunnel that goes under the sea and makes up hong kong island to the rest of the city and other students are sorry the protesters have been occupying that tunnel for days now it's all part of the movement that they were trying to. do this week when they were going to disrupt the city so throughout the week for the 1st time we saw lots of protests during rush hour trying to cause commit commuter chaos shut down businesses and tried to shut down any government operations and that was their tactic for this week and so most of those barricades have been cleared up most of the city's up and running again except for that highway that these protesters are holding on to so this is why this is considered the my last major. strongholds of the protestors in that movement we've seen this week the david i mean these protests have been going on for months now is what we're seeing just another iteration of those protests that we've been seeing i mean it certainly looks like
2:04 pm
an escalation always approaching a tipping point of sorts. you know every week it's been there has been something new there has been a new tactic or a new announcement from the government and each time you think it can go any further than the prince as police anymore but each time it has been so now at this point where the standoff right here but this is a symbolic of the standoff between the protesters and the government a new move by the government or perhaps not by the government does the government is denying it is the use of p l a's soldiers the chinese soldiers they're stationed here they're a few 1000 of them stationed here everyone knows that but they did not interfere in hong kong operations but for the 1st time yesterday we saw them out in the streets in their sports clothing so to speak khaki t. shirts and shorts trying to clear the roads now whether that is sending a message to the protesters to remind them that this is still china and control or
2:05 pm
rather it is really more of a social act clear the roads and reassure hong kong people that the government can get things back on track is unclear but the point is every week and every day we're seeing some kind of a new movement very new ones it's hard to figure out exactly where this movement is going but if you ask the protesters they say they still control much of the movement here they say they'll still carry on regardless of what the government says or what they try to do and any effort by the government to push push them back will make them push harder divisions hollande on the streets of hong kong for us thank you dave here to stay safe. now sri lanka's election commission has declared gazza by rajapakse said the winner of the country's presidential vote his rivals subject premadasa conceded as early results put rajapaksa over the 50 percent mark needed to avoid a 2nd recount now he's the brother of former president mahinda rajapaksa and was
2:06 pm
also defense chief when the tamil tigers were defeated 10 years ago the election was dominated by rising religious tensions and a slowing economy now subject permadeath us says he will stand down as the deputy leader of the united national party in a statement he said we've just witnessed the most peaceful presidential election in the history of our independent republic this was a result of the democratic gains and institutional reforms that have taken place over the last 5 years that empowered an independent elections commission and restored the rule of law my appeal to the incoming president is that he take this process forward and strengthen and protect the democratic institutions and values that enabled his peaceful election as the 7th president of sri lanka well for more let's now bring in our correspondent ben smith who's in colombo so granted a return of the rajapakse as to power and certainly he's a controversial winner how did he do it. yeah the rajapakse is
2:07 pm
back and it's because i think this time around they managed to successfully corral the majority support from the majority single buddhist community here in sri lanka makes about 7 makes about 75 percent of the population the opposition candidate the other main runa premadasa he didn't really get enough of those votes he got support from the tamil community certainly norm but his communities but he didn't get quite enough of the sinhala buddhist community i'm joined now by kaylee iran but well who is the spokesman for the new president 1st of all congratulations to your candidate and how did he do it whether. we anticipated we planned and then in the last 5 years the rule of the last 5 years the rule of last 5 years. not not very received by the public you know all of this like in firstly primarily
2:08 pm
the security of the country national security was at say the government people fight it and then the government bradley by making certain mistakes and overlooking certain important affairs they let 300 people almost 300 people killed and that is in fact amounts to murder even because that would have been prevented national security economic and foreign investments all were not dumped in the standards are not dumping them on that they expected and want not up to the standard that they have promised the public in 2015 so obviously. there was somebody distance from the public on the vice president of the sri lankan muslim council he says it's all our worst fears realized this picture why does he say that what simple what's equal to fear. in fact these are the ones that have created these are things that are that certain small pockets of people. various communities
2:09 pm
you know get into groups and they're create situations to give a impression that that they feel that that is if you're psycho that activity is taking place by extremists on all sides not just one site and that these are creations and in fact they can see with the next years that 5 years rule that if you bring all the companies together maybe they'll have a special engagement with the pope on the north and the east because we did not receive. this from that it does all of the valve of the gender gap so therefore we're going to definitely make sure and then should that be really engage with them and see where they have them that their concerns were and need to definitely address that because yes i mean we spoke to tamils in the north you know muslims who were attacked after the easter sunday bombings bombings and they are really worried about a return to rajapakse he was defense minister at the end of the civil war as you
2:10 pm
know the tamils are really worried about you know i think i think this is completely as a forward you know it's something that is created by some political party political groups who are. you know set off my study to support so they try to use this kind of coming out of disharmony a part of that strategy to tell them look you have you have the saviors of you know all of the muslim coming to you all the time of the community but resist not so in fact remnants of rajapaksa mind that i just. read entirely out and out to get all the problems the most beneficiary so the timing that you put in the not you got norm or no hole people being eyes checked all kidnapped from their residence as children are not taken of a hostage situation no no no as such i did so with just that one north sinai that just tired out so basically they are the most beneficiaries off the end of the wall
2:11 pm
he later on but well for the moment thank you very much yourself joining us. the new president also by rajapaksa will be sworn in in a ceremony in sure lanka's ancient capital on monday symbolic because of the ancient connections of the sinhala community and we'll be reporting from there on monday back to you my well and that's bennett smith for us in the sri lankan capital colombo thank you ban it. influential iraqi cleric worked out how saddam has called for a nationwide strike on sunday a store and baghdad has also caught fire witnesses say it was a result of clashes between security forces and protesters demonstrations started back in october against a lack of jobs and public services but have since grown into calls for regime change more than 320 people have now been killed in the demonstrations and tosh i'm going to name has the name from baghdad. other roads were quite car coming into tahrir square we're seeing a lot of students in the numbers do seem to be bigger than we would typically see
2:12 pm
this time of day on a sunday if you look behind me you can see pretty significant plume of black smoke you mentioned that the prominent shiite cleric sautter called for an issue not wide strike in iraq it's probably because his followers comprise the largest bloc in parliament they are the primary opposition and they are united with the protesters in calling for the resignation of prime minister. and calling for elections in baghdad as i said we're expecting more people in tahrir square than we would typically see on a sunday in basra things appear to be quite tense the ports the operations there are once again halted as protesters block the entrance we're told that they've blocked the roads to several oil fields in the block the primary road leading from basra to baghdad there's no school today in basra in may soon and the local councils have actually given people the day off from work and school so we expect
2:13 pm
to see significant numbers of people attending protests there so really what we're seeing is that protesters are continuing to maintain their momentum and try to keep the pressure on a government that they believe has not gone far enough in its reforms right now we have drafts of an election law and a new electoral commission. that are waiting to be reviewed by the parliament but of course the one thing that protesters want which is for the prime minister to step down has not happened. and wrong supremely to come in a has voiced support for a fuel price increase that sparked a nationwide protests where he denounced what he calls hooligans for taking part and. it's as riot police and security forces again forth with demonstrators across dozens of cities on saturday protests as unhappy with the petrol being rationed and prices rising by as much as 200 percent dosage of ari has more from tehran
2:14 pm
a number of incidents have been reported overnight and early morning by the official state news agencies here they include deciding a gas station on fire as well as attacking a police station in the city of shiraz and a number of religious right leaders have been arrested in the city of masha as well as about 60 people have also been arrested in a muslim their own province now all these incidents are being carried out by what the supreme leader has called hooligans the highest authority in iran has been speaking to religious students in tehran early sunday morning where he voiced his opinion on the latest news about the fuel price increase let's hear what he had to say. i'm not an expert on this issue but i say if heads of government make a decision i would support it and i will the heads of 3 branches have made a decision based on expert study so it should be implemented. meanwhile the special committee has been meeting behind closed doors in parliament to discuss the
2:15 pm
developments of these fuel hike that's happened the speaker of parliament ali larijani has said that the parliament will support this decision as it stands and there will be a series of committees looking into how this price increase will affect the rest of the country and they will try to minimize the impact that this increase will have on other prices in the country to make sure that the people's concerns are addressed about rising cost of goods in the cities across the country. well the next but still around is there an ancient chinese government documents that sheds new light on beijing's crackdown on muslim rebels.
2:16 pm

dozens of cities on saturday protesters are angry that peddles being rationed and prices are rising by as much as 200 percent. bolivia's former president evo morales has told al-jazeera he should be allowed to retain. and complete his final talent office that comes over the united nations warns that violence been out of control and preventing the election on friday of his supporters was shot dead during fighting with security forces and they were found the clashes between security forces and supporters. people have been launching from the region of japan to the central. spokes algeria's john hall and outlined his next moves. up into sunday if more rallies was latin america's longest standing current leader now pressured to resign by the military after accusations of electoral fraud he suddenly believe he is former president and the next in mexico but often less than
2:20 pm
a week he told our dizzier he's already planning to go home. i can't be outside of the country i'm used to being with the people as a union leader president doing work i miss it a lot i'm looking for a legal way to go back and be with the people as they resist the dictatorship the coup he says if allowed back he wouldn't seek to run in fresh elections that's a bone of contention between him and the opposition but he still wants to complete the last 2 months of his term. i don't know why they're so scared of evo they don't want me to participate. in everything for life or for democracy or a time my candidacy but they should let me finish my term is that understood not understood by now interim president cheney and years she said he could face charges if he goes but it's the culmination of discontent that started back in 2016 when morally so to change the constitution to rome for a full time there was

a referendum the majority voted against you having a 4th and afterwards. if you did it you did run again and that seemed to go against the spirit of democracy in the country where you could interpret it like that but so you know on the 21st of february 2016 the lie won enough lies to beat us with $70000.00 votes moral less the right united and beat us based on the lie you and c.n.n. were in on it the u.s. embassy prepared that lie he's on repentant the letter and he also insists that there wasn't fraud in the elections a month ago this by investigators from the organization of american states saying that they too was diverted to a secret service that there were clear manipulations he says that organizations politically motivated. i had a lot of trust or some trust but now i don't have any in the oas i should be called
2:22 pm
the organization of the states of north america not america he did call fresh elections after b.o.'s preliminary report but by then it was too late many c.f.l. morale is as a good leader who simply stayed too long you managed to almost half of poverty the economy grew under you and you brought stability. now. given what's happened if you could go back in time would you have run again for this. would you have gone against that referendum or if you could have your time again would you have bowed out gracefully garden walk was a you don't look for the post of presidency at 6 you out that's my experience in the unions and my experience in the presidency and i want to tell you that after the 1st mandate i was happy content to go back to cochabamba when you win people's trust and go again and. that in may have been his undoing and in his way libya is

in crisis with police killing protesters violence from both sides. you can only look for before your home out mexico city. now the new york times has obtained chinese government documents that it says reveal new details about beijing's crackdown on muslim leaders in the shin jan region now it includes instructions to local authorities on how to handle students returning home and finding family members detained or missing how to control readers plans to extend restrictions on it and to other parts of china president xi jinping has private speeches calling for absolutely no mercy after we hear rebels killed 31 people at a train station and 2014 and the documents reveal how the crackdown worsened after a hardline local party chief took control of in 2016 also suggests that there is resistance within the communist party against the crackdown and that's argument

is an associate professor of asian history at georgetown university cats are he says it's clear that there are crimes against humanity being committed against the weak. these documents are very important and among the various things that they do is they give us a lot of insight to the parts of this policy which are outside of the camps so for instance most of your viewers will be hopefully a little bit aware of the fact that china has been. in voluntarily detaining large numbers of your citizens citizens of the people's republic of china for the last 2 years but we don't know or many people don't know a lot about the sister policies the ways in which local branches and local street level offices of the crime his party handle the children of the people detained how they do propaganda work on the streets how they manage information how they think about what's going on in the camps so this is really unique information gives us
2:25 pm
a lot of new insight into space for you how the government is trying to legitimate and work with local people in sin john and it's very significant in the one thing i would really want to stress here is that these are important documents because they shed light on what are clearly ongoing crimes against humanity in sin john and i've been on the former finance minister has withdrawn his name from contention to be the next prime minister mohammad saffi said it would have been difficult to form a harmonious cabinet and a statement he added that he hoped outgoing prime minister saad hariri would be renominated. has more from beirut. there was drama the suffer the from contention of being the next prime minister will be received positively amongst the protesters who had rejected him the moment it was reported that he was being considered for the top job considering his past of allegedly corruption but there is a lot more i think here in the sense that the protesters now have been taking to
2:26 pm
the streets for a month these movements started on october the 17th and what so many people are waiting to see is whether a large numbers will be taking to the streets later on sunday if that happens that will give more momentum truth people like prime minister sound how do you know who many believe only nominated mamma suffer the in order to essentially burn him in order to make the his opponents in the government goals supporters of hezbollah as well as president michel own forced to essentially come back and beg how do you do you to continue as prime minister thus giving him more strength more street cred to then name a government of technocrats that he chooses but what's important to note about lebanon is beyond the protests beyond the different domestic movements and power plays that are taking place the decision as to what will happen in the future for lebanon lies probably more outside of a group than it does inside the group in the sense that the sponsors of the main

parties the it has the last concerts in iran or ideas in riyadh and other major world powers like the united states they're the ones who can actually really move things forward so a lot of focus will be on how things work out in terms of international diplomacy with regard to that on a side note one thing that a lot of people are very concerned about is the economic situation obviously one month of protests is taking its toll the banks have been closed for a large amount of that time there is a lack of foreign currency here particularly u.s. dollars and left some sort of shift or change happens with regard to that that has the potential of making things. even worse in a country that is struggling to survive right now. the phone call between u.s. president donald trump and the ukrainian leaders rather move lenski has been described as inappropriate by a senior aide to the u.s. vice president a transcript from jennifer williams who testified behind closed doors at the impeachment hearing last month has been released in it she also said trump's

insistence that ukraine carry out politically sensitive investigations struck her as unusual she's too used to appear again at the hearing next week she has returned he has more from washington d.c. . wednesday's public testimony by the current u.s. ambassador to the e.u. good and someone is now turning out to be the one of the key moments in this investigation he already raised eyebrows because in his initial deposition to congress he said he knew nothing about any kind of quid pro quo and then subsequently a few weeks later he submitted written test of it said oh you know i said i didn't know anything about a quick break or in fact it was me who told you queen officials that if they did some digging on the bidens and maybe the military aid that we promised you might be released quite a change he didn't tell congress that at the time now on friday we had information from a stall for the ukrainian embassy that he was present at
2:29 pm
a lunch i saw him hold on trump on his cell phone and from said so are they going to do the investigation words to that effect and some of them said not ever going to do it i love you though that having anything you want again something he didn't tell congress during his initial deposition or in a subsequent written written deposition and then on saturday we have information from the national security council's expert on russia and europe and by and large there was a very good day for donald donald trump this deposition does support many of the old trump's assertions that i was nothing wrong with the july 21st call that it was only classified into a secret because of a mistake and and so on but i don't fact as far as he was concerned no one really knew about any quid pro quo of the ukrainians themselves weren't necessarily aware of an arms freeze until late august until september the 1st one golden some of them told them that maybe a quid pro quo might work again all of this information hasn't been hasn't been shared with congress by some grand himself in the key question now will be when

golden sun and i'm told the ukrainians give us the burden and other and that the arms the arms will be released was he acting on his own initiative or was he acting under the orders of bold try. that's going to be cute interesting but more of. the person who. might be acting on his own initiative perhaps but that's not going to be. hello again this is al jazeera and these are the headlines police in hong kong have used tear gas and water cannon on protesters as a university campus you've been throwing petrol bombs as you can see fires have been in it around the hong kong polytechnic university and some of the most dramatic scenes of the 5 months of unrest you're watching live pictures now from hong kong where all schools have been told to stay closed on monday because of the violence true lanka's election commission has formally declared to go to my
