5:00 am
newton's 1st law and the rest of i was 11 years old and jason that announces it. and i'm fully back to go this is the news hour live from my headquarters in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes. fires and explosions as hong kong police stormed a university held by protesters after an all night stand up. iran's president says subsidies will saw going to poor families from monday as he tries to calm fury over high a petrol prices also this hour sri lanka's former wartime defense chief wins the
5:01 am
presidency after a nationalist campaign promising to crush what he calls religious extremists and fasten your seat belts for get a look at the jet powered car its design is hope will smash the land speed record. thank you for joining us police in hong kong have stormed a university campus held by protesters after an all night standoff this is what it looks like as riot officers move in not long before dawn with fires raging inside and outside the university buildings early as some protesters held petrol bombs and even shot ours at officers who fired back with gas and water cannon at one stage police warned that they would use live bullets let's get the latest from sour o'clock who's in hong kong outside that university campus it's now monday morning
5:02 am
sour we saw some pretty dramatic scenes just a few hours ago bring us up to speed with the situation where you are. we have had some extraordinary scenes here at the polytechnic university which is in the very busy part of hong kong it's in calhoun callen district now behind me you've got the university the last in fact in the last few minutes of fire one more round of tear gas but certainly the last hour the place moved in again to try and clear out the last of those protesters who've been barricaded themselves within this particular campus we've seen quite a few flee and as though a fling at the place fired more rounds of tear gas on those protests is our feeling on some of the access roads on my left now you might get to see some these overpasses they're still blocked by. whatever the protesters could get their hands on we'll have also have quite a large fire still on the overpass we're hearing some explosions still going off within that campus we know of quite a number of arrests the place who is still here around me in front of me and behind
5:03 am
me on the overpass they've moved in to push those students out and those students have fled further into the callon district we also have reports now that they're blocking up parts of night and road now again that's a very busy road in calderon so certainly some dramatic scenes here at this particular campus a polytechnic university and this was pretty much the last university campus that became almost of the battleground for the last of the remaining anti-government protesters over the last few days tell us more about the disruptions this has caused the fires at this university and you know people wonder what's going to be the next move of this protest movement now this is been going on for 5 months and the confrontations and the violence increasingly escalating. it certainly has increased over the last week or so the level of violence and the clashes between the police and the protesters the last week or so we've had weak die protests and that's where the strategies and certainly the tactics have changed
5:04 am
until now the protests and the demonstrations have focused on the weekends but was when the protesters created what they were calling general strikes creating transport chaos congestion no blocking a railroad and bus routes that's when things started to kick off i should say and this campus on friday they started to what police described they created a weapon factory where as you mentioned there were creating hundreds of pits with bombs that were using bows and arrows trying to keep the police at by over the last few days and clearly after a die a violent confrontations on sunday and overnight as you mentioned it's a marathon standoff the place have moved in and now this whole area is in lockdown the central tunnel on my left this is the busiest tunnel that the access point between hong kong island and kelowna it's been closed for days and it reminds close also behind me on the other side of the polytechnic university those roads remain closed this whole area is in lockdown as a place trying to clear out the last of those protesters who barricaded themselves in this particular part of calhoun thank you for that sara cloth reporting there
5:05 am
live from hong kong earlier i spoke to see son who's director of the china institute are so lost which is part of the university of london he says the university standoff is a major escalation. if and when the government in beijing signs that the government in hong kong and police in hong kong cannot restore order and stability in bonn kong then stay will send in the people to police as well as correlates the people's liberation army garrisoned in hong kong i think we apply the steel properly a few months away from that yet because when the government in baiting make it this isn't to escalate about 2 weeks ago they talked to view that the problem was not the policy but the implementation job 8 and it will mean they will need the government in hong kong to redouble its efforts for which they will have to give
5:06 am
a bit more time to do so the protest movement starts off us one of the most peaceful protests you could plant on earth but because of the steady spiral in use of repression by the police and the corresponding increase in violence by the protesters we saw a steady process of radicalization of some of the young people in the protest movement and there is also a change in puppet attitude in hong kong. other world news tensions are still high in bolivia following his resignation as president with demonstrators criticizing the interim leader. at least 9 people have died in the city. when security forces fired on protesters calling for me to return terrorists has our report. the city of soccer in the province of bison mourning.
5:07 am
a penis was shot during a protest carried out by a will more or less supporters here his relatives say she was shot in the head. we are set and her to because he is not the only one that was killed they took the others a few hours away we want a solution because when we took him to the clinic we had to pay a lot we want justice. even what alice resigned last week after being accused by the oas of committing fraud in the presidential elections but for these people he was the man who dignified them most of the people are from indigenous communities and are coca leaves growers and they were trying to go through the main road towards the capital past but they were prevented by the police they had to escape and they're telling us that they were ambushed right in this. facebook live video was filmed by one of the protesters. was 18 years old and was shot in the stomach
5:08 am
while filming but clashes live. he was killed that day. though is the public they are militarizing this whole area because they want to believe we are criminals they shot at us from everywhere and they can do it because we are poor. the actions of security forces are currently being investigated they're accused of using live ammunition and excessive force on promoter list demonstrators they enter american court of human rights says at least 9 people were killed here and over 130 were injured. man says the response by the military was disproportionate. what happened was a massacre in this country they want to say it was a confrontation on friday the government issued a decree that exonerates the armed forces of any killing and one hour after that decree the police and the military started using live ammunition against protesters . the government says the protesters were infiltrated by foreigners and were using

improvised weapons. we have asked the attorney general to investigate what her he told me the delay was we couldn't rule out who did not want to be the bodies. attorney general to investigate this as soon as possible because obama tropic was the launching pad for it will more or less political career as a leader of the growers federation many people here remain loyal to him and do not trust in the new interim administration many say at call for elections and political negotiations are crucial to prevent further loss of life. speak to peter. chair of political science at wake forest university from new york thank you so much for being with us live here we know has always been a country that's been divided where there's been inequality but to what extent do
5:10 am
you think the current crisis has further exacerbated these divisions. it's absolutely sasabe to these divisions because i think that both sides are irritating the divisions that currently exist 1st of all the president on us has come to power really in a moment when what bolivia needs is reconciliation negotiation and work between the 2 sides but what she's done is taken a series of symbolic actions that have actually irritated the rifts made divisions deeper and made people are hard and fast into their positions these include swearing in an entire cabinet none of whom is from the indigenous population believing all from the eastern lowlands reinforcing christianity in her public messages calling indigenous religious practices satanic of referring to them as marbury so in this sense rather than trying to reach across the divide what she's done is. put further distance between her and the actual
5:11 am
majority indigenous population believe will by and large are supporters of it what i was also interesting at i think that the the level of violence and i think that followed ever marise is a pasha to many people by surprise how how do you explain that the situation spiraled out of control so quickly and who was behind this who is giving these orders. i think what happened is that this has been simmering for decades it's quite interesting as we look across the region these explosions of violence unexpectedly in places like ecuador and places like she like i think these are widespread instances of unresolved social conflict that that this sort of current political situation has as part for a whole variety of reasons having to do with racism in the liberal model having to do with the up isms pretty much the poor old jim and i hesitate to say that there's
5:12 am
really 4 years behind this that seems like an easy response and an easy answer to an explanation for what has been an underlying social conflict that has been existing in bolivia since its foundation more out of his supporters bolivia's popular masses want him back they've been praising his social and economic legacy what impact do you think this crisis is going to have on the progress the progress as i've been made in bolivia economically and socially you mentioned the indigenous community of course they are the one who they're the ones who support morale is what impact is this crisis going to have on them. as you note in deep economic crisis there and i will live in general but i think more importantly looking for though looking at the political and social long term this is going to have quite a effect on the social fabric it will be via because among the just population of
5:13 am
a moralist was seen as something as a savior and you can hear indigenous people saying well we had 13 years of some towering influence in our government. that is in stark contrast to the floor of the years that europeans were controlling bolivia so i think there's deep deep anger that goes far beyond any sort of economic consequences but obviously a country with such deep social conflict and such an island is going to be very hard to move ahead economically in advance what are recognized what is recognized progress i mean i'm a part of that what i discovered peter 7 is very interesting to talk to you thank you so much for joining us on al-jazeera my pleasure thank you iran's president says families will start receiving financial assistance on monday and the money will come from a contentious rise in petrol prices has had ronnie's also condemned protests against the high that have at times descended into riots at least 2 people have
5:14 am
been killed authorities have shut down the internet in an attempt to stop the protests being organized. now more than 87000 people have demonstrated across iran since friday according to security officials quoted by the farse news agency around a 1000 of those people have been arrested in one particularly hard hit province while the 100 banks and 57 stores have been damaged or set on fire no chill having kids more that age and we have witnessed how some people have gone to the streets after the implementation of the decision to increase the price of petrol people have the right to protest but we will not allow the targeting of security or the spread of chaos and riots in the country the decision to increase the price of petrol belongs to the regime and not only to the government the people should not worry about the implementation because its revenue will be distributed back to the people al-jazeera is dorsetshire barry has more now from tehran. president has time rouhani has been making
5:15 am
a few comments following his weekly cabinet meeting on sunday evening in the capital he said that it is the right of every iranian to protest but it is not their right to cause riots he's referring to over a 1000 people that have been arrested over the past 48 hours as a result of a number of incidents that have taken place over all over the country in a number of cities over $87000.00 people have turned up to demonstrate and show their frustration at the news that the price of fuel has tripled overnight the government made this announcement and the president was defending the government's decision on sunday evening saying that they were trying to help the poor families in the country by increasing subsidies to them and that's why they had a decision to make and that the situation was made it wasn't an easy one he said they had 3 choices one was to increase taxes across the board inside iran the 2nd one was to increase the sale of oil that was not going to happen because of u.s.
5:16 am
sanctions at the moment on the rainy and the 3rd was to increase the price of fuel for iranians that's what they decided to go with this decision has had some very serious consequences number of people have turned out across the country to protest and show their anger there have been 2 deaths reported so far one of a policeman in kemah city and another a protester in. and even on supreme leader ayatollah ali how many also spoke on sunday giving his support for the fuel price increase he also denounced those he described as hooligans for rioting adding that the nation's enemies have been cheering the unrest how many iranians to support their government's decision to men m.p.'s all of them as enemies and being as are you i'm not an expert on this issue but i said if heads of government make a decision i would support it and i will tell you the heads of 3 branches have made a decision based on expert study so it should be implemented and as it has in the

government itself but also u.s. sanctions that have severely exacerbated economic issues in iraq after trying to g.c.t. away over a year ago and we imposing sanctions so i think you're i mean we're very aware that they're being hit from both sides. much more still ahead on this news hour how the tran campaign is turning political troubles into fund raising gold. class celebrations as a death row inmate in texas gets a temporary reprieve in sport peter has more in this 21 year olds tell a woman say. at least 9 people have been killed in airstrikes on rebel held territory in northwest syria the attacks took place in the village of my lodge and on the outskirts of the town of saraki just east of it live local media says it was coordinated by russian

reynolds reports. with week 2 of televised impeachment hearings approaching democratic house speaker nancy pelosi pushed back against president donald trump's complaints that the process is unfair he has every opportunity to present his case but it's really a sad thing i mean what the president did was so much worse than even what richard nixon did that at some point richard nixon cared about the country and off to recognize that this cannot continue palosi said trump made a serious mistake when he tweeted criticism of former u.s. ambassador to ukraine marie avan of it even while she was testifying on capitol hill that the words of the president weigh a ton they are very significant and he should not frivolously throw out insults but that's what he does i think part of it is his own. insecurity

far to show their support and pay tribute to protesters they said had been injured by police during months of weekly demonstrations you know it's been a big year people have died or lost arms and eyes all those have been unfairly jailed we can't ignore a system that lets people starve i am a single mother i work but i have no money at the end of each month yellow vests movement began as a protest against high fuel prices it then rapidly became a social movement of the cost of living in against the french president accused by demonstrators of favoring the rich over the poor the scale of the unrest forced emanuel mycroft to change his approach but in recent months the movements lost momentum the number of supporters a rallies has dwindled along with the public's appetite for them fewer people are actually turned out in the streets to mark the 1st year of the yellow vests movement than a supporters well might of hope for also the question for many of them now is what
5:41 am
will be the movement's future the yellow vests have failed to unite behind a set of leaders and supporters are divided over its aims nevertheless some believe the movement can survive. the movement can take on a different shape now what is important is that we raise the awareness of gay people who took risks we went to the streets in the not cities in the old the head one year on and it's clear the yellow vests movement has marked the french political landscape and highlighted the plight of working people who struggle financially it's also inspired similar movements in other countries less clear is whether the movement can become a force away from the street. it's. just 0 paris. the damage bill from floods in need talian city of venice is likely to top $1000000000.00 as a worst such disaster in well over a century schools shops museums and historic landmarks like st mark's square have
