2:01 am
loved ones and we are in a remote corner of the pacific where 75 years after world war 2 the search for fallen soldiers goes on. thank you for joining us in a dramatic escalation of iraq's anti-government protests crowds have torched the rainy and consulates in the holy city of najaf 100 surrounded the building lighting tires blankets and anything else they could find while chanting iran out they accuse tehran of propping up iraq's government which have been railing against for 2 months. not earlier we spoke to our reporter mommy job until an on the phone from baghdad he explained more about how suspicion and i'm sure about iran has played into the post. there's a good old eric here in the by by the thousands and our government demonstrators
2:02 am
that. is far too beholden to store in powers and among those foreign powers that are exerting too much influence in this country is the country which is their neighbor and that they will work extraordinary about what happened this evening is that the iranian consulate. in jest which is the. shia religious authority was attacked. majority city and they didn't like government demonstrators there are you know. showcasing their anger about the fact that they believe it is evolving with the dirty too much power in iraq by going and storming the compound where the iranian embassy is house so this is a very big signal the government there is growing discontent that iran is far too
2:03 am
much present in iraq internal affairs now this again all playing out against the anti-government movement that is growing you see several cities despite the specter of violence despite the clashes that continue to happen every time the ego out here square here in the capital of the epicenter of the anti that statement the protesters say they're going to continue to come out until they see the government actually responding to their demands. let's discuss this further now with not air shammy director of the center for middle east studies at the university of denver thank you so much for being with us iraqis have been taking to the streets in the thousands since october just how serious do you think an escalation is this attack on the iranian consulate in najaf what does it tell us about where the protest movement is heading. well it suggests an escalation and an expansion of these protests i mean the symbolic importance of the attack on the iranian
2:04 am
consulate in one show off you know cannot be understated this is the city where the ayatollah khomeini used to live it's considered to be you know the heart of the shia muslim world and iran thought that it had the population iraqi shia population on its side in terms of its you know regional policies clearly that's not the case and so i think this is a very important development as you say what you have is mostly shia protests is demonstrating against the violence perceived influence a do you see iran responding in many way after this. well it's very difficult to see how they can respond because the natural sort of constituency of supporters that iran has relied upon to expand its influence in the middle east has been in and among shia communities so if it responds with brutal force as it has responded recently within iran over the last week to crush very similar protests. that
2:05 am
runs the risk of you know losing in tehran support in in in iraq and throughout the broader region so it's unclear you know what options the government in iran has in response to these protests i don't think they have very good options and as i suspect right now there is deep panic and paranoia in terror on over what happened today in najaf how could these anti-government protests whether it's in iraq or lebanon and even within iran itself as you mentioned how could they impact iran's influence in the region could we see tehran's regional influence reduced in the long run if these demonstrations continue. well i think so because of you know iran is playing a very important role you know behind the scenes in terms of controlling iraqi politics last week there was this major leak of cables that the new york times and
2:06 am
the intercept published that effectively you know documented that you know you rock is a is a vassal state of the islamic republic of iran if iran chooses to clamp down hard and to crush protests by you know killing large numbers of people that effectively means that the the population will start to turn on the islamic republic of iran in turn on its allies in these capital cities of beirut and in any about died in that will you know undermine the broad sort of. soft power that iran has wielded among shia communities in the middle east for a very long time so the risks are very high i think it does represent a sea change because i don't see these protests you know stopping anytime soon they're rooted in court economic and political grievances that don't have easy solutions so this isn't mary in many ways a game changer in terms of iran's regional influence thank you so much for your insights and speaking to us about this not me from the from the university of denver joining us there live from denver thank you very much for your time and

mexico's government has expressed anger about a u.s. malls that would designate mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations present donald trump had promised earlier this month to take action against mexican cartels after 9 americans from the same family was shot dead mexico's president says he wants corporation not interventionism live to alan fischer in mexico city for as salaam bells ringing in mexico city and mexico in general allen how will the mexican government handle this while they try to stop the. well there is big concern here in mexico for a number of reasons 1st of all if the united states does go ahead and designate the cartels as terrorist organizations people here are worried that the united states may then launch attacks into mexican territory they could use
2:18 am
a drone strike to take out a cartel leader in the way that they've attacked senior terrorist figures in the middle east they are why they choose that americans might stop coming across the border on vacation who wants to go to a country where terrorist organizations control large parts but people also see this as donald trump appealing to his political base remember this was a man who launched his political campaign by saying that mexico sent rapists and criminals to america they think he is simply pandering to them and therefore they're going to see what they can do to try and stop donald trump taking a step that they think is ill considered and dangerous. the death of 9 americans in a cartel ambush earlier this month sparked widespread outrage the victims 3 women 6 children were traveling through a remote area in northern mexico when they were attacked jule u.s. mexican citizens the family the labatt ins demanded the white house designate mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations you're going to do
2:19 am
a telephone interview with a right wing talk host president donald trump said the process is underway i've been working on that for the last name the day as you know designation is not that easy you know i don't go to a process. mexico's drug cartels are huge operations they control large chunks of the country and are involved in drug trafficking assassinations kidnapping and political corruption being designated a terrorist organization by america means it becomes illegal for anyone to knowingly support the groups if banks realize they handle any cartel funds they must block the money under and form the government a new members are banned from entering the u.s. and so taking this move while it might benefit the president in the united states it might make people feel righteous and justified in satisfied here that we're taking stronger steps ultimately may make it harder to do business with the mexicans and we need to be a team with them in order to get this problem solved mexico's policy on fighting
2:20 am
the cartels has changed under the new president and today's man well as obrador who's been in office almost exactly a year he believes in hugs not bullets and that social conditions need to change to make the cartels less economically powerful got bit as young see cooperation yes interventionism no. but one expert says if the u.s. president follows through on his threat to clear out the cartels and uses military action there could be significant mexican backlash with this they do a side it can stay in mexico and organize who are one attack or something against the mexican cartels in mexico. and this is the problem because mexico is. that because of their country and that's it any difference of that. so it's not as if the mexicans haven't had threats like this before from donald
2:21 am
trump you remember when he threatened to close down the border and then had to backtrack from that they will make preparations of course they well but they're hoping that talks with the state department and with other people enter own the white house might talk donald trump away from the edge in this because they seriously consider this to be ill thought out and something that could seriously damage relations between mexico and the united states thank you for that alan fischer reporting there live from mexico city. now reports out of the united states say president donald trump was aware of a whistle blowers complaint against him when he unfroze military aid to ukraine trump is facing an impeachment inquiry over allegations he withheld the money to force ukraine into investigating his political rival joe biden the new york times white house. before they told congress
2:22 am
a white house correspondent can be hockett says the reports are a boost for the democrats case for impeachment the new york times is quoting 2 unnamed sources that have familiarity with this case and say that it was the president releasing that aid but only after he had been briefed that there was a whistle blower complaint that that briefing took place in august but we know that $391000000.00 in aid to ukraine military assistance not released until september we're also learning that that hold on a came the very same day that the president had a very pivotal phone call with the ukrainian president vladimir is a lengthy that that is the day july 25th the transcript of that call being released where the president requests of selenski that the ukrainian government do us a favor it is those words that democrats have been seizing on as
2:23 am
a foundation for their impeachment inquiry now apparently the withhold on this aide so upset in to at least 2 staff members in the office of management and budget that they in fact resign so significant revelations that only bolster the democrats' case that the president leverage his political powers for political purposes. they saudi iraqi coalition fighting in yemen says it will release some who see prisoners and allow limited strikes from their rebel held capital and i have forces been close to commercial side since 2016 the coalition says patients needing medical care can be flown out in corporation with the world health organization as for the prisoners the coalition announced a release of 200 who the fight has in a swap the developments appear to be part of efforts and the 5 year conflict this is a rare glimpse of hope in a desperate war situation. for years we've asked for airport to be

reopened for these medical flights but also for other commercial and civilian flights this is is a place where we always had to send patients out of the country because they couldn't care for the worst and most complicated medical treatments then the airport was closed at the same time he let me systems in yemen core lapsed so for years we've seen thousands die and are necessary for those who opens over but for many patients there is now hope that they can get abroad and get treatment world health organization will now be coordinating this with the government of of yemen and i hope that this air of medical experts will start you know imminently but of course the whole medical system needs to be

give the u.s. a wider scope of action against cartel members mexico's president has said he wants a corporation not interventionist. britain's opposition leader has accused the prime minister of offering up the country's national health service during trade talks with the us jeremy corbyn released several documents which he says proves the government wants to open up the n.h.s. to us pharmaceutical companies the boy's johnson dismissed the allegations as a complete diversion paul brennan explains. public services and the n.h.s. in particular are the central theme in labour's election campaign in a post written with the u.k.'s free health service be undermined by predatory trade deals with us pharmaceutical companies president trump this year said the n.h.s. was on the table so n.h.s. are to girls your lot a lot more than but still he later backtracks labor says it now has the proof 451
2:33 am
pages of it these uncensored documents leave forest johnson's to noise in absolute terms of the. voters need to ask themselves and very serious questions is the n.h.s. safe in boris johnson's hands we've now got evidence that under boris johnson the n.h.s. is on the table and will be up for sale labor says renegotiated patent rules could add an extra $640000000.00 a week to the n.h.s. drugs bill the documents show that in november 27 seen the u.k.'s lead negotiator wrote the impact of some patent issues raised on n.h.s. access to generic drugs i.e. cheaper drugs will be a key consideration going forward the following march the minutes of the meeting notes the u.s. approach makes total market access the baseline assumption of the trade negotiations the prime minister has dismissed labor's claims as a complete diversion and flatly denied them we are absolutely resolved that there
2:34 am
will be no sale of the n.h.s. no privatisation the n.h.s. is not on the table in any way not quite true according to this former trade negotiator it doesn't appear that for example the n.h.s. or food senate have been red lines as far as we can tell we haven't seen anywhere in the text saying the u.k. site said this was not on the table and could not be covered in a trade deal if it doesn't say that then it's on the table. the scottish national party has reiterated its proposal for new legislation to definitively exclude the n.h.s. from future trade talks this will get in t. the c. deals will not under maine the fainting principles of the n.h.s. nor open it up to profit driven exploitation of documents don't commit a johnson government to actually agree a deal involving the n.h.s. but they do seem to show that the issues have been discussed. labor's general election campaign has been buffeted by headwinds in the past 48 hours and the
2:35 am
release of this massive trove of documents is an attempt by the labor party to get back on solid ground the n.h.s. the question is is there enough mud in here to stick to the conservatives on an al-jazeera central london or less speak now to robert scott who's a senior international economist with the economic policy institute he joins us from north potomac in the u.s. state of maryland thank you very much for being with us if indeed discussions have taken place wate king place about putting britain's n.h.s. up for sale in in the u.s. trade talks what would american 80 miles like to do with it. well i think. it's already clear is that they're. putting a foot in the door by putting forward a u.s. patent and copyright standards which can dramatically increase the cost of drugs in the british health care system i think it's also been mentioned that there may be
2:36 am
interest and hoping up access to some of the non-emergency services that are provided by the get it in a n h s such things as a and b. and hip replacements so i think that this is really a way to get the camel's nose under the tent as we put it here sometimes to stick to us. private health insurance sector into the national health service in great britain and i think the great concern there is a devil tremendously raise costs and reduce access for pretty consumers but it's not that u.s. companies are going to on british hospitals is it. i haven't seen evidence of that what i've seen is evidence that the united states wants to use this trade deal to increase special protection for us and us investors in particular sectors this is the way to go about it step by step what they focus on 1st and foremost pharmaceuticals that is probably the most profitable sector in the u.s.
2:37 am
health care sector we spend enormous amounts of money in the united states on health care specifically for pharmaceuticals for example there's a drug that's a trick comes disease in great britain it costs about $1700.00 pounds a year for i'm sorry 17 pounds a 100 pounds a packet to obtain that drug in the united states prescription that medicine costs over 8500 pounds or more than 5 times as much so that's the kind of thing it's a state if us law is applied in great britain so that you know tell us a bit more about how these plans would impact on the n.h.s. and the millions of britain who rely on it and could other european countries with song national health systems also be at risk if such a day or a superhero. well i think the plan here is that boris johnson wants to execute a brags that he wants to get out of the european union so he that he can negotiate
2:38 am
an independent trade deal with the united states however we have to remember that the united states and european union were already in the process of negotiating a free trade and investment deal under the obama administration trump has set that aside and he's trying to focus more narrowly on cars and so on but many of the candidates in both roles for the democratic nomination have talked about bringing back more a traditional trade negotiations that is recess attending the obama agenda i think that said that that agenda has failed sale working people the united states but i have great concern that it could come back to haunt us again i thank you so much for talking to us about this robert scott from the economic policy institute joining us today from outside washington d.c. thank you for your time a poet in bangladesh has sentenced 7 members of an to death for their role in
