10:00 pm
thank you all those individuals who serve us every day and take care of us that switch the professionalism you can expect from the city of pensacola asking to be county and we certainly appreciate all of all those who've come the governor everyone else the state of florida has reached out to us all across the state and i we appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers please continue to keep thinking about pensacola n.a.s. and the people there and we will bounce back from this thank you if we have time myself or some of the others if there's any question governor as a former member of the navy or on the roster who serve in the police how would you expect this as a family now. well i think that i think the f.b.i. is probably going to brief you guys in due time and i think they're dare leading for it but obviously when you have a foreign national involved you know particularly in that part of the world the investigation's obviously going to be different than if it were just somebody from a local community and and i think you'll see that as things go on. like.
10:01 pm
here what and. why and why i mean when i you know what the captain a few months away on. we have a the international training syllabus we have students from from several different countries that come here they learned aviation they become naval aviators while they're here is something we've been doing for quite a while as with our partner nations it's it's important and i'm but a cross-pollination across training that we do with our allies is is something that's and we don't for a long time i mean world war 2 we had to air force folks they were training here there's always been international students training here because it's a good place to train that's good quality training. so it's how many students do you have and are now. i can speak to the exact number of international students from a couple 100 of the 3 2nd what was he running. he was just an aviation pipeline so you say he was training aviation that you're not going
10:02 pm
to. act with a member of your right you know i don't want to i don't want to get into that that's that's up to the f.b.i. to complete their investigation to to see exactly it would be speculation on my part to up to sort of see and apply. again i'm not to speak to where he was in the pipeline or is exactly right now that's a lot of these that with the uprising of a gun on base weapons are not authorized on base you can't you can't bring a weapon on base and thus you are you'd want people to come forces you. with his own home. yeah. that's that's something is difficult for me to speak here because our security measures well they're there we keep them for cells for a reason to fight if i talked about our screening measures but i will say that we practice through this this is part of our training our mass our arms and their civilian d.o.d. along with this can be county in and sure sparkman and with guns called police department we train to active shooter scenarios regularly we just did one recently
10:03 pm
so this is. we never expect it but we train for it and we remain ever vigilant for you expect there are going to be more changes i get i'm i'm in this i'm not going to speculate here how do you plan on that and that he was acting oh i'm not going to speculate on the particulars of the of the investigation or exactly what what have you know that i'm not talking about that night yet thank you very much i appreciate it thank you everybody not talking about what you want to talk about how much you know i think your deputies how you know they're going to follow you you're a russian what a lot of people would not you know and raise their lives that you like i appreciate that we've been to the hospital of course to see the officers and their families and to kind of reinforce what kept you can sell it just said we do active shooter training it's both on site training and also computer simulations that we train with the duty police in them mastered on program in the navy and so this was an actual example of where all that training comes into being how do we react to this
10:04 pm
and how do we can coordinate and communicate with each other and so you know unfortunately that training was put to the test today. i'll tell you it's hard to speak to that without tearing up i could not be prouder of the men women the escambia county sheriff's office they ran to the fight not from the fight and even though they knew there was an active shooter and again the chances of putting your life in danger are great guess where they went. they went inside so let me tell you the best of our community was on scene today and that's why it turned out the way it did. on is about you or about walker's one. hit well just very briefly you know we have a precinct not too far off the base you know the thank god the call came in we had officers that were available it was about a 3 to 5 minute response the call came in at 10 minutes to 7 this morning. i won't get into a lot of specifics on that because of the f.b.i. investigation and here's let me explain why we don't do that folks there's
10:05 pm
a whole lot of witnesses out there that are listening to these programs that are on social media texting each other the worst thing in law enforcement it can happen to you is for me to get a 2nd 3rd 4th and story from an eyewitness from someone who was there who has a clear understanding of what occurred this morning but now they're reading all the text that they've sent people and people have sent back to them and what they see on the television tonight and so that memory which is very distinct right now becomes clouded and now we've begun to tell a blended story were wasn't really what i observed is what you observed and i observed that we shared with 10 other people so we want to be very careful with that and that's why i really think this captain can sell has told you unfortunately many times we don't want to get into that because if you were a witness i would want to know where you were in the building what time you were there when did you hear the 1st shot you know what did you do with your actions there did you ever get eyes on the shooter etc did you help evacuate the building those are things that are critical for developing timelines even to the point of angle of trajectory where students are running from.
10:06 pm
the facts have been established that we have unfortunately now 4 dead 8 injured what i what. it was a handgun. you address whether or not. it was read it i will not with name. i will not confirm that and folks i know the answer to your questions i'm not answering or confirming it not because i'm attempting to be trite it's because i'm not the cognizant authority for this investigation what that means is the f.b.i. the a.t.f. the in c.i.s. on base are the lead agencies on this we are a support element and so while i have the answer to your questions i'm not at liberty to answer them or usually either i don't however it has some of them i think this morning we now have an additional personal person. having a. decent work product results being so it's really about the press conference right now that we have worked. through here that everybody thank you very much for
10:07 pm
your time thank you. right so we've been getting the latest from pensacola florida where a shooting at a naval base at a station pensacola left 3 people dead and several others injured and we had confirmation that there are 8 people specifically who have been injured in this attack the assailant was also shot and killed but given some some more details about the shooter as well who according to the florida governor was in the saudi air force there are reports suggesting that the suspect was a saudi national and had been training but of course this is the 2nd deadly shooting at a military installation at a naval base to have taken place this week as he just getting some more information from pensacola and also following this story is she had more tendency and so just
10:08 pm
take a serious what has come to light from the information we were getting that. yeah it's interesting that as we were listening to the officials they're very cautious about giving us details for fear of clouding they say the memory of eyewitnesses in addition it actually is the f.b.i. is leading the investigation and they have most of the details the other new bit of information that as you mentioned the number of injured is going up to 8 but the official there also said that a handgun was used by this saudi this alleged saudi national in the attack from what we understand around 6 50 in the morning the reports started coming through to authorities of the shooting was taking place as you said 3 people and the dead 2 people at the scene one person on the way to hospital 8 injured including 2 police officers however by 7 45 in the morning but by the hour after the initial reports came through the gunman was shot by one of the one of the officers. it's true that
10:09 pm
authorities are being very cagey about the details perhaps because that again for fear of eyewitnesses absent was actually not involved in the in the investigation but as you could tell from the questions we do have more information now which is now widely available so i don't think we will be clouding witnesses minds because even in that press conference some of that information was being was being was being discussed that is that the government has been named by several sources as muhammad saeed. ronnie he was a 2nd left tenant in the saudi air force this information has now been widely disseminated being asked about in that press conference mohammed saeed out runny a 2nd left hand and the saudi air force as the official said this base is a center for training for militaries around the world a couple of 100 i believe they said members of international militaries getting that training that this particular this particular individual was getting aviation
10:10 pm
training it was in the aviation training pipeline we were told there were several other extremely extremely interesting more interesting the. newsgroup moments in that press conference led to the florida governor because i'm not sure of the kingdom of saudi arabia was involved they will owe the local community a debt they will over the local community a better interesting was will debate what that actually means we're going to come clear in the coming days and then there was another really interesting bits the local sheriff said there will be a lengthy investigation and maybe there will be aspects of the investigation that we will that you will never have access to but trust us in some ways like to raise more questions than we initially have but anyway the but i was those are the words of the local sheriff. and summary 8 injured not $73.00 dead the gunman also killed with the f.b.i. now leading the investigation yes they were reluctant when they should have at
10:11 pm
times to confirm any details was a sham or details about the shooter his identity i mean of course this is a military installation and immediately there are questions about how something like this can take place. in an area that is supposed to be secure but of course if the salient came from within the naval base within the base itself somebody that was on the inside that was there for training it raises questions about whether there will be changes to existing protocol and procedure. robert goyer and there were very real in the farming of the south this individual had the weapon in them so i'm very difficult to speculate as to exactly what you know what changes will be married but you are clearly very concerning for those others involved thank you very much from washington jabber tansey following all the latest there from pensacola florida where we got confirmation there from officials that 8 people have been engine shooting on that on that military installation has left 3 people dead
10:12 pm
and we have confirmation that 8 people and now engine also confirmation about the weapon used a handgun but his job was saying there the officials seem reluctant to shed details about the assailant the report suggests that the shooter was a saudi national who was in the saudi air force and happened to be at a naval air station pensacola for training so we will of course await more details but obviously there will be an f.b.i. investigation and officials that were very conscious of that and so the the details that we have so far of course this the 2nd deadly shooting at a military installation at the naval base to take place this week. but we are also bringing new other stories in a breaking news story out of iraq this hour at least 9 people have been killed there by gunmen near a protest sign central baghdad dozens more wounded in the square the attackers were
10:13 pm
reported to have opened fire from cars. so yes we're getting reports there of 12 'd people killed in baghdad's killarney square but of course this comes after there have been protests taking place in the country that have led of course the prime minister to submit his resignation though that has done nothing to actually stop those protests from taking place going to bring you much more on that shooting in baghdad meanwhile people across in years been celebrating after police shot dead 4 men suspected of raping and killing a 27 year old woman in hyderabad they've been taken back to the scene of the crime and police said they would they were killed when they tried to escape but while many of welcome these controversial killings human rights organizations say they are a dangerous precedent and her reports now from you daddy. flowers
10:14 pm
and messages to congratulate them it's the kind of welcome police in india rarely receive but in hyderabad police are being praised for shooting 4 men accused of gang raping and murdering a 27 year old veterinarian dr last week police commanders say the accused were taken to the alleged crime scene to answer questions but try to escape one of the suspects is said to have snatched a policeman's gone and opened fire the one dollar officers member missed me and i was going to sound bad but without the content of the fire i'm going to. saw on there are you know. that mission that is in the order of just what. the family of the murdered woman says justice has been delivered now he may have been better i mean i think this remaining family and women are in doing it.
10:15 pm
protests were organized in several cities across the country to seek justice. parliamentarians have been speaking out one called for the lynching of rapists another advocated castration ideas with some with tim's support. shyne i was 23 when a man whose marriage proposal she had refused threw acid on her she supports the police's action and also demanded that all the culprits be hanged. when rapists get the death penalty then we will stop protesting rapists should be hanged. however some crime experts see capital punishment is not an effective deterrent the killing of the boricuas has been broken by many here who continue to be frustrated at length the delays in the justice system but several lawyers and women's rights activists say that justice must be delivered only by following proper legal procedures and they say that the stigma attached to rape victims that gives offenders much. levy is the real problem she told me activists say the government
10:16 pm
must address the wider problem of prejudice against women in a mostly male dominated society the same persons who are asking for this kind of. custodial killings and lynch lynchings and so on are actually the ones who are both standing up or perpetrating better and perpetrating but we are allowed to do it stewards women with a gang rape of a woman on a bus who later died of her injuries provoked massive protests and international outrage 7 years ago india's government responded by passing a law tougher penalties for repeats but experts say the conviction rates haven't risen and others think improved policing a fast track justice system and attitude changes in society are all needed to reduce sexual violence against women throughout india. al-jazeera new delhi. or bring you more now on the unfolding story in iraq where protesters appear to have been targeted in
10:17 pm
a shooting that's taken place the associated press news agency saying that 12 people have been killed in baghdad's killarney square after unknown assailants fired live ammunition from their cars of course this is a central protest site where many people would have been gathering and it comes after there have been demonstrations continuing unrest in the country for some weeks now particularly in the capital itself calls for the political establishment had to be uprooted and the this has led to the resignation of the prime minister. so mona fulton is live for us in baghdad do we have any more details on 1st circumstances of this attack. we're getting reports of casualty figures we're getting anywhere from 9 to 15 people killed from various security and medical sources who are close to the situation in that location now what appears to have happened is that a group of cars pulled up to 1st of all
10:18 pm
a building near sinek perch which is one of the bridges that protesters have been occupying very close to to here square which has been the epicenter of the protests just a few 100 meters away and a group of unknown gunmen who were inside these cars that opened fire using live ammunition on the protesters who are occupying one of these buildings now we hear that several people were killed and dozens were injured in this attack the gunmen then went on to burn items in that building for example mattresses and tends to the protesters had set up to camp there and we're also getting reports that the violence had moved on in the direction of tahrir square now it remains unknown who exactly is behind this attack the ministry of interior said it is unknown gunmen they don't really have any confirmation at this moment but one of one security official who has troops deployed very close to this area told me that he got reports that it was an iranian backed armed group that is believed to be responsible for these attacks it's important said this is
10:19 pm
a very unusual escalation in violence what we've seen so far is casualties occurring because of daraa confrontations between protesters and security forces near the front lines we have anti-riot police usually firing at the most risk using either tear gas or live ammunition and that has been the pattern of violence so far so this is a very unusual incident it comes amid reports that fears among the protesters in tahrir square that political parties and armed groups could be infiltrating the protests and use them to further their own agendas we had reports just the last couple of days of. groups or supporters of the popular mobilization. forces which is an umbrella group of armed groups of close ties to iran who showed up at tahrir square to stage their own demonstrations and we've also heard reports of unusual knife attacks entire square so this incident is just another development that we're seeing in the past couple of days and it's fears that the protests could be
10:20 pm
hijacked that they could be used to further the interests of other groups but of course we're still getting information it's impossible to say at this moment who exactly is behind this attack you know important that it's too early to draw any conclusions about that but it does appear to be a target targeted attack on protesters in iraq for now thank you. now there are reports there around 30 people have been killed in a new massacre in the eastern democratic republic of congo follows a series of violent attacks by rebels in and around beni that have damaged efforts to contain the 2nd worst outbreak on record the ugandan army was deployed to the area earlier this week the ally democratic forces a group with roots in uganda of killed more than $100.00 civilians since october aid groups have suspended operations following attacks on their facilities by a different rebel group which took place last month. now

to kenya where at least 8 people have been killed in an attack on a bus near the border with somalia the attack took place near the area of could tulo somalia based. claim to have been behind the attack the al qaeda linked group has vowed retribution on kenya for sending troops to somalia to fight it. meanwhile the search for survivors in kenya's capital nairobi is continuing after a 6 story residential building collapsed at least 3 people are dead and 11 have been rescued several more people are feared trapped under the rubble it's not clear how many people were in the building when it came down early on friday right cross believes 22 families lived in that building because of the collapse isn't yet known but they are common in kenya where a recent survey found 58 percent of nairobi's buildings were unfit for habitation. we know the development says more heavy rain expected in southeastern kenya where east 130 people have died after 2 months of flooding

10:23 pm
i most of these protesters of our ng to boycott next week's presidential election in algeria but those who turned out every friday for 42 weeks they said the poll is pointless army remains involved in politics and the old guard linked to the former leadership retain their jobs i'm lists predict of voter turnout of just 12 to 15 percent i don't think there will be an open in of for a political system what is happening in a moment is some sort of inertia it gives the impression that something is happening that so many. in the system exists or look presidential elections will take place next tuesday and so on and so forth but in the unity nothing changes. there are 5 candidates in thursday's election as a team he is the youngest he like the other 4 either supported or served in the government a president abdelaziz bouteflika before he was forced to resign in april when

10:25 pm
this attack at pensacola he has also said that the shooter in no way shape or form represents the feelings of the saudi people trungpa said that the shooting was a horrible thing and he has also expressed his condolences to family. to the families of the victims and of those who have been wounded in this attack but the reaction was pretty swift of conversation has clearly taken place between president trump and the saudi king and so that pretty much confirms that the gunman was a saudi national a senior u.s. official saying that he was a military pilot from saudi arabia who was in the united states for training at the pensacola naval air station here the leader of britain's opposition party says he has a confidential government report that shows the prime minister has been dishonest about his brecht's it plan jeremy corbyn says the report proves the government's

breaks it deal would lead to customs checks between northern ireland and britain the prime minister has claimed that the trade would be frictionless course johnson of course has promised a complete breaks if reelected in next week's general election he said corbett is announcement was complete nonsense the labor leader also says that maybe damaging terrorists for u.k. exports going to northern ireland it's a use there will be a customs declaration absolutely clearly for trade going from a lot of them on to great britain the government cannot rule out regulate rechecks rules of origin tracks and animal and public health checks also on free trade going the other way from great britain to northern ireland there will be all of the above cost potentially damaging tariffs. paul brennan is live for us now in maine said just outside london where british prime minister boris johnson is set to face opposition leader jeremy corbett in the next hour in their final head to head debate for next week's elections i guess this is that last chance to make their

arguments and appeal to the people to elect them into office paul what can we expect to hear from corbett and johnson see night. well i think several main things that will of course as part of this it will certainly be a main battle ground it's been the chosen battleground of boris johnson throughout this whole campaign expect the phrases that he's been trotting out through the through the whole of the past month things like get it done avoid the did the real delay that he says would result if labor one power on december 12th i think it's inevitable that the german court will want to bring up this document that he was brandishing earlier on today about the reality of the situation and as regards a border down the center the irish sea and checks taking place on goods moving between northern ireland and the u.k. mainland and back again but as far as the potential for a left field out of the blue kind of question well you might look at law and order
10:28 pm
for example certainly the london bridge terror attack last week labor were criticized because the attack in that particular incident was released as a result of reforms that labor had put through and that today we have a serial rapist who's been found guilty of particularly horrific crime and the reason why he was released because of reforms of the conservative coalition put through in 2012 so perhaps ammunition for jeremy corbin that it's going to be fascinating it's the last chance as you say for voters to see the 2 men side by side and to be able to compare and contrast them there was no player winner from the 1st televised leaders' debate it's probable there won't be a clear winner from this one will be down to the voters less than. retired. not much not many days left to go thanks very much for brennan. teenage activist gretta term has joined other young activists at a mass protests in spain's capital where the un's climate change conference is

a foreign national being a part of the saudi air force and then to be here training on our soil that to do this and the f.b.i. is working with the dea they're working with the only they're working with the skin of your county sheriff's one of the things that i talked to the president about is given that this was a foreign national in the employ of a foreign service is it will be time to do this but obviously the government of saudi arabia needs to to make make things better for these victims and i think that they they're going to show it dead here given that this is one of their individuals and all the breaking news story this hour at least 9 people have been killed by a gunman in a protest in baghdad those reports suggest that the death toll could be high at patz 12 or even 15 dozens more wounded me at the central kilani square it comes off to iraq's top shiite cleric. grand ayatollah ali al sistani called for a new prime minister to be chosen we've out foreign interference and a power mark about iran's influence in the country. if across india instead of
