dressed by turkey we listen what is the proposal. for a couple on you know we meet with global news makers and tweak about the stories that matter. this is al-jazeera. there are members of a problem and this is the news hour live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes . authorities in northeastern india impose a curfew after widespread protests against the citizenship bill that's being passed by parliament. leader aung san suu kyi defends her country against genocide charges that the international court of justice and the u.s.

steps up its pressure on iran but a new sanctions targeting some of the country's biggest transport companies. i'm peter darby here in london with the top stories from europe including the final day on the u.k. campaign trail boris johnson gives reporters a cold shoulder and former labor m.p. turned on jeremy called it. and i've had a similar story of sport international test cricket returns to pakistan for the 1st time in more than a decade i'll have details of their match against sri lanka later this news hour. they opera house of india's parliament has approved a controversial bill that will grant citizenship to minorities who face religious persecution in pakistan and bangladesh and of gonna stand but the bill has stirred anger because it excludes muslim refugees from the neighboring countries. our

position politicians and rights groups say the exclusion of muslims as part of the government's head the national agenda but defending the bill the home minister says india's muslim citizens have nothing to fear. it is a question of giving citizenship to people who have come because of religious persecution the minorities or any muslims need not worry i want to say this clearly nobody needs to worry if anyone threatens you or scares you don't get scared this is their interim government that is moving with the spirit of the constitution so the minorities will get full protection. now a curfew has been imposed in parts of the northeastern state of mass demonstrations against the bill have turned violent the protesters there oppose the bill for a different reason they say indigenous communities will be marginalized if a large number of migrants from battle there should granted citizenship the protests are also taking place in neighboring through a state where large migration from bangladesh over the past 3 decades has already

reduced the indigenous population to a minority on child war has more from new delhi. this is always expected to be the case because the government had the numbers it was very clear that the government is going to push this bill through it has been in the manifesto of the hindu nationalist party that is currently governing this country for a very long time and that was one of the 1st things that the whole minister of this country amish are said when the proceedings began in the upper house today he said that they have the people's mandate to make sure that this bill passes through that's how we started however in a democracy it's also about what the minorities think and not just what a majority is even if it is a majority view majorities view is so lots of questions as far as this legislation is concerned is going to soon this bill is soon going to be a law and now several different kinds of objections have been released you spoke about protests that have taken place in the north east of india and that is because
9:04 pm
people there have opposed the presence of bengalis both hindus and muslims for a very long time they say they're trying to protect their culture but also livelihood that's their reason and these protests we believe are expected to continue as a preventive measure. law enforcement authorities there have imposed a curfew they have also they will be shutting down the internet it's still sort of working as i'm in touch with people there but over the next few hours it's going to be a complete shutdown we believe our indian army has been is on standby there one column is of 70 soldiers so one column is on standby in assam and 2 columns are on standby into the pull out where also we've seen protests. as they want while the news of from now on to has dismissed accusations of genocide by her government against the minorities as the snooping on sunset she opened last defense in a case brought to the international court of justice by the gambia she insists the

military has been conducting a legitimate operation against armed groups and state when her reports from the hague. as member state counselor and head of government arrived at the international court of justice she was welcomed by supporters chanting we stand with you. but anyone hoping that aung san suu kyi a nobel peace prize winner would take this opportunity to at last stand with the reading would be disappointed in opening me a mass defense against genocide charges she said the picture the gambia presented to the court was misleading and incomplete the situation are a kind of complex and not easy to fathom but one thing surely touches all of us equally the sufferings of the many innocent people whose lives are the torn apart as a consequence of the armed conflicts of 206070 in particular those who have had to flee their homes and are now living in camps and cox is bizarre.

following the court's proceedings. the consequences of the mean mars military offensive in august 2017 is turning this into the biggest refugee camp in the world one of these tents have a family a person who has the most horrendous stories of what happened to them so whether genocide intent of genocide is proven or not what is clear is that severe human rights violations atrocities were committed against these people many people here are aware of the proceedings in the hague some of them have been meeting with community leaders sitting around a radio listening having them translate what is happening here they've been calling for justice for a very long time but there is a skepticism also among some as to why unsung suchi when. she went to the court for her own benefit we won't be benefiting from it she was part of these atrocities against us she went there to lie and to gain public support for the 2020 alexion in myanmar she went to the ice for her own benefit. it
9:09 pm
is hugely significant what is happening so many miles away at the international court of justice but whatever way the court is going to rule it is going to take time many people will tell you that it's not going to have an impact a real direct effect on the people here people want justice they've been calling for that for over 2 years but they also want to go home now mean more hasn't given any insurances hasn't allowed the united nations or any agencies in to assure that they will be safe if they do return to bangladesh has made it very clear they don't want them here almost a 1000000 people live in these camps and their future is uncertain. now u.s. secretary of state has announced new sanctions on iran but says he's open to more dialogue with head on to free american president as well the latest sanctions target one of the country's largest airlines and air and an iranian shipping network the u.s. says has been used to send weapons to hurt the rebels and yemen pompei says washington won't deviate from its campaign of targeting iran's economy through sanctions as a baby has been following developments from. so this united states pulled out the

2015 nuclear deal it's been imposing unilateral sanctions against iran in what washington calls its maximum pressure campaign that today they've announced another set of sanctions the 1st is against the shipping company they stomach republic of iran shipping line sanctions on this company were lifted as part of the 2015 nuclear deal now they will be reimposed in $180.00 days now that's to allow any companies that use a shipping line to ship medicines to iran to find an alternative method now the 2nd company is a shanghai based company and the shipping line is called shipping now the united states says that this company is involved in shipping illicit materials to iran's aerospace industry which oversees iran's missile industry again these would be imposed in $180.00 days and the 3rd is against an airline and this will this will come into effect immediately and the united states claims that this company provides support to iran's revolutionary guard corps now secular state my pump

the bells and whistles one of the most eagerly awaited stock offerings in history after years of planning and several false starts shares in saudi arabia station owned oil giant to remco have begun trading on riyadh's to dollar exchange as a result of the oil produces shares rose by 10 percent it follows a crucial week for the firm obtaining the largest ever initial public offering raising $25600000000.00 for less than 2 percent of the company this puts its value at $1.00 trillion dollars but that fell short of the 2 trillion dollar valuation saudi arabia wanted and the $100000000000.00 it had hoped to raise back in 2016 how to get the valuation up from the 1.7 trillion which was achieved in the i.p.o. or to the 2 trillion and i suppose to a large extent how does saudi arabia now make up for the 70 $5000000000.00 that

it's probably expected to get but but didn't saudi arabia derives most of its money from oil exports but a recent drawing. attack on its facilities in the east took out more than half of its oil production it caused concern among international investors who will likely be watching to see what happens next they had also been concerns the government would force saudi billionaires who had been detained at the ritz carlton in riyadh as part of an anti corruption crackdown back in $27.00 t.v. via ram co's storch this was always started to be a win for the saudi government one way or other they were going to bring the plate the markets and this is exactly what they have done if they use was anywhere else in the world there would be an investigation to find out who was ramping up shares but when the government story there's various all the markets can do with a market value of about $1.00 trillion dollars now aramco is well on its way to

hitting the 2 trillion dollar target set out by saudi crown prince mohammed bin cell martin nicola gage al-jazeera let's go back to our top story now india's parliament approving a bill that will grant citizenship to minorities who face religious persecution in pakistan and bangladesh and of ghana stand barred muslim refugees have been excluded the opposition and others say this is discriminatory let's get more on this we're joined now by a bit election their prime an activist associated with the northeast india woman initiative for pings and she is joining us live from india very good to have you with us on al-jazeera i want to talk more about the huge protests that are taking place in the northeast people there are upset they have their own concerns about this bill namely that they who are indigenous minorities in india will become minorities in their own state and then tell us why people there are so upset.
9:16 pm
1st of all this is due to the passing of the vote in the parliament is the darkest times in the history of our country we have lost the evident that we are the world's largest democracy by this religious bill regarding the northeast of india we have to understand this is a region which is formed 40 by the little people and we do 170 in indigenous communities and this part of north use india has been subject to martial law well the armed forces special since 98 we have been having democracy at gunpoint and this area has seen huge amount of what we call injury or pollution is a shift in demography because the influx of people one non-injurious resulting in many just people who's now land rights resources intelligence and that is why the

anguish in the hearts and minds of millions of not use people who are not only debuts on but they're been protesting since the beginning of this year to be chippy trying to do more this parliament built in aid of gender this year so this is not the protestants not this is here this last couple of days or hours that it's really here ever since the fugitive utah diffuses bill in the last 2 years so this is a darkest time in our history and we will resist and so the you know the indigenous people of the north things have had many concerns about their identity and protecting it as you point out for a very long time but what about us we know but what about giving citizenship to refugees and migrants which is something that international nor various asylum conventions should do allow for. absolutely you are right we would like to put on record that the indigenous people of north east have been living in peace
9:18 pm
and in diversity for a long long time we are not against government of india providing you know protection to any persecuted minority in fact our call is that india must sign and i really do want convention un convention on refugees so that you just able to tell any force and person from neighboring countries around the world but why segregate only certain religion dominant religion this is for us a very very clear ploy by the government of india the order of government to ensure that there is democracy changed in our region we must connect this issue to the national register of citizens which was just you know shared in which 1900000 people have been rendered out of the citizens of listed india and only whole minnesota's whining all india in which everyone in this country 100000000000 people have to pool their remark indians this is something which is unprecedented in the
9:19 pm
history of india gives a democracy right and that is why we have protesting against this bill. so just to be clear you are not against minorities religious minorities persecuted people being granted citizenship in india but m.i.a. do i understand that you don't believe that they should be allowed to settle in the northeast because that is going to create demographic changes and make the indigenous people that even greater minority and if so then where should these refugees and migrants be settled especially since they're in the northeastern areas because they have come from across the border and the northeast as close to where they're from. this is precisely the court and the united nations going to mention 2007 the un convention on the indigenous people's rights have clearly stated in which india is a part of the un convention on ending racial discrimination also protects the fact
9:20 pm
that indigenous minorities wherever they are there must be protected and again i repeat we are not against the helping to prosecute people from around the world who want to degree pugin india but this particular communal citizenship amendment bill is particularly targeted towards the northeast because it is in the northeast of india that many of the communities have been settled for years why not a good job with just more discoveries and we're not in other parts of the country of why only in the northeast of india and it's particularly as we speak truth has become in which more than 80 percent of its population indigenous people are reduced or nearly like 17 percent minorities in the all land where the last people in trooper up there been shot dead yesterday police have fired live all in a bullets on the market indigenous students we are asking for the protection of

indigenous peoples rights which india as a member of the united nations must respect india has not done this and has not understood our issues and and that is why our projects we are against any kind of communal bill which is laws we meant of more bank politics of the b g b of india we are our secular india of an india which respects diversity and not a builder just aimed to engineer population in our indigenous terror troops and that's that's just wrong against our own constitution and against united nations declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples as they probably thank you very much for your time and your perspective on this we do appreciate a finale that is a bit election a prime thank you. now thousands of people have marched in the algerian capital to demand thursday's presidential election be canceled when roger police blocked roads and used battens to stop crowds gathering in algiers protesters say no election can

be free or fair while the old guard of rulers remain in power and the military stays involved in politics the election follows months of protests against security forces and political leaders who control the country for decades now from one crucial election promising radical change to another polls open in just under 13 hours in the u.k. in a vote that should determine the nation's future in europe for more let's go to peter darby and our european forecast center peter. thanks very much steers the leaders to spend their final campaigning day traveling the length and breadth of the u.k. a day that saw 15 former labor m.p.'s urging people not to vote for their party while it was led by jeremy coleman and the conservative prime minister boris johnson appeared to take refuge in a fridge to escape media questions paul brennan reports. the final day started before dawn for the party leaders every hour vital as the campaigning draws to

right. thing to kill it. is jeremy corbyn the labor party leader who's been lagging behind in the opinion polls but is still optimistic of a late turnaround he began his day in glasgow laying out what a labor government would mean for voters they care elected government that would eliminate child poverty across britain and they can relate to a government that will end the cruelty of the injustice of universal credit. thank you very. think of moments that will give hope to the next generation by investing properly in education for the future all across the u.k. and if you do in scotland the nationalist s.n.p. leader was offering a fresh choice of vegetables nicolas sturgeon a greengrocer's in edinburgh urging voters to back her party to block boris johnson's bracks it people don't want to have the cuts to public services if we don't want to be dragged out of you to gain so will it have boris johnson as great

minister envoy a send key to make sure we take our future in total hands and build a better future for scotland and in south west london the liberal democrats are concentrating very last drops of campaign energy on targeting conservative seats which voted to remain in the e.u. in the 2016 referendum this is been a difficult campaign for the liberal democrats but poll rating sliding steadily throughout the 5 weeks and their leader joe swinton excluded from the head to head televised debates but in certain remain leaning seats the party could yet still spring some surprises every vote matters we've got an amazing scene it's in the campaign trail i still believe we can stop forest johnson stop right there and build a brighter future the opinion polls suggest the conservatives have just enough support to secure a majority government but the margin of error in those polls is big enough to mean that a result could still go either way paul brennan al-jazeera southwest london. ok let's go live to my colleague need parliament for us this neve it was something of

a really bizarre kind of last day. but it certainly was particularly the scenes of course johnson appearing to hide in the fridge there to avoid some. shooting by quite a prominent figure on british television as we've seen over the course of this entire election campaigning over the past 5 weeks things have been bitters at times things have been intense but certain. they are being grueling for the likes of boris johnson and gerry corbin and their other political counterparts as well both leaders decided to start in the north of england germany corbyn going a step further starting in glasgow and there is a feeling perhaps to the entire election may be decided by that part of the country in areas that have been traditionally labor strongholds where the majority of people voted to leave the european union those are the constituencies that the

conservative party want to pilfer from the labor party of the labor party desperately want to hold onto but then of course we've heard news from early one of the day that 15 labor m.p.'s suggested that people shouldn't vote for the labor party this over the long standing controversy over anti semitism in the labor party . as you've mentioned there in the introduction a matter of hours away form the polling stations opening at 7 o'clock in the morning on thursday before that though both the leader of the labor party and the conservative leader will hold their final rallies here in london with their final message is. the conservatives need the support of every voter that they could possibly get to ensure a majority that's the only way they believe that they can deliver breaks in the labor party insisting boris johnson is not the right man for the job he can't be trusted he will be prepared to sell off the very revered rather national

health service in the trump style trade deal it's all to play for. ok me thanks very much we'll leave it there. ok joining us live here in the studio is matt bevin turn he's a researcher at the u.k. in a changing europe welcome to al-jazeera so the opinion polls just the past 24 hours there was a big poll of polls yesterday the opinion polls today a kind of doing this are we in a hung parliament territory i don't think we're quite in parliament territory partly because the conservatives are too far ahead. mainly because they've managed to attract old labor voters tend to be working class voters who supported bracks it but who have now been in the labor party perhaps just for this election but that's the really the key portion of the electorate the conservatives are taken and the labor party haven't really managed to attract them back during the campaign they've attracted mostly liberal democrat voters to seeing you know bricks that is being the main issue for them and then wanting to make sure that there is an opposition coalition that can have a 2nd referendum but really for labor there's not much else that they can do in
9:29 pm
terms of attracting these voters back the. strategy i think in the final stage of the campaign is really to keep squeezing little democratic vote so that's good news . the current conservative prime minister has run about the european elections the conservatives who voted for the party believe you're a party then drifting back do we think. yes i think so i mean i have a difficult thing for the labor party really is that this is an issue that it will this is a bracks it election and they don't want to talk about bracks it so you know they want to talk about the n.h.s. and you know obviously has a relationship with bracks in terms of trade deals and stuff and that's where it's called through but then they sit in the middle and they're sort of getting hit from both sides. as i said that did the key thing for them is keep squeezing liberal democrat vote but it doesn't like there's enough though chair there really for them to make any difference i think my expectation is that we had the big poll this week it was a kind of 38 majority i think that probably does get squeezed slightly more old labor voters just can't really stomach voting for the conservative party but
9:30 pm
actually what we probably are in sort of slight majority searching for the conservatives for as far as journey corbin is concerned is the message that doesn't get traction all the way the message is delivered so you know the n.h.s. is safe with us that's where they've tried to steer things clearly during this quite divisive election campaign and yet that doesn't seem to be cutting through the white noise of all the other stuff that's been going on here i mean the problem is bracks in half the problem is him really because the working class voters he is losing real. they don't just have a problem with the party's policy unless it was some problem with him that had the pull factor of the conservatives british policy and also the push factor of not really liking jimmy corbin not just respect to policy because if it's kind of leadership style in general ok we have to leave it there matt bevin thank you very much. and we'll have more from london later in the bulletin for now it's back to elizabeth in doha let forward to it still ahead on our time is running out on israel as politicians to avoid election year and in sports now play move quickly

the next election date march the 2nd next year and i think there's a recognition that this is a hugely unpopular thing that they're doing an unprecedented thing that they're doing as well by going to a 3rd election in a row with no viable government having been formed the problem is that the same positions still obtain as they did after the 1st election in april and after the 2nd election in september in that benny gantz says he won't serve under an indicted prime minister netanyahu says that if there is going to be a unity government between his party who couldn't learn white then he has to go 1st as prime minister the other key player of the door lieberman who has 8 seats in the parliament the knesset he says that he will only serve in such a unity government and he's not giving any prospect of serving in a right wing coalition with netanyahu in each of these 3 players has stuck to those positions very rigidly and so we're heading to
