it's a leveller. 0 . caliber and julie mcdonald this is the news hour live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes 2 year sentence following a corruption trial for former strongman leader all while the sheer causes could trouble in sudan. the younger spreads across india against a controversial citizenship law that discriminates against muslims. climate talks remain deadlocked in the spanish capital a separate countries are accused of dragging their feet. and in sport it's a big day in the club world cup in doha as the champions of africa are currently

taking on the champions empty asia we live with all the latest coming up. a very warm welcome to the program we begin in sudan where the country's former ruler omar al bashir has been found guilty in a corruption trial the 75 year old has been sentenced to 2 years which he will spend in a reformed since or rather the jail because of his age now the case centered around suitcases found in his home filled with notes of different currencies worth more than $130000000.00 the courtroom erupted in chaos as the verdict was read out this year supporters started chanting that the trial was political and were ordered to leave but despite that they continued their protest site bashir was overthrown in april after months of demonstrations it's the 1st of several trials he'll face for actions during his. 30 year. we'll have

a morgan is in sudan's capital khartoum hi there head we saw those chaotic scenes in court and now he's going to spend these 2 years in a rehab center and talk us through what we've been hearing from the judge. the judge started 1st of all by explaining that the president is facing if found guilty what he will be sentenced with now he has sentenced former president ahmed rashid to 2 years in a rehab a detention center but despite that his supporters and his defense team came out and said that the judge is biased that's partly because just before issuing the verdict the judge mentioned the much too much too much of my job is a young man who was sentenced to death by bashir is government when it came to power in 1994 charges of possession of foreign currency now when bashir came to power he made it illegal for many sudanese to possess quote foreign currency and most of my job was found in his house with possessing foreign currency which his

family stay what was partly because of his role as a businessman a part of me as from his father's parents and so because of just the judge mentioning with the money to buy the defense team and his supporters came out and said that this is a is a sham that the trial is unfair and that they will be appealing the british in 2 weeks time now his supporters have been taken to the streets in the hundreds these things that they reject to the trial they reject the verdict and they've also accused the current transitional government which is only 4 months old of not being inclusive and trying to beat the country into chaos and the security was tight wasn't it i was cite the courtroom and on the streets in preparation for the reaction to this for ticked. it's not only the reaction that people worried about they're worried about what's with the protesters who have called for demonstrations against the whole trial how they
6:04 pm
would react now the army put out a statement last night saying that all roads lead to the army headquarters not to the comforts of the town but in the hour of the states in sudan will be blocked and that is indeed what happened so down walk up to the military locking down blocking all roads leading to the army headquarters. and various other states there has been high tension and a lot of cautiousness about that about the reaction and also concern about how anti bashir protesters would react to even read that in sentencing that the team is too light and through fenians would result yes and to be cheaper just to stick it to the streets demanding a harsher sentence now let's not forget that these are not the only charges that former president almost bashir is facing since he was ousted in april he's also been charged with inciting and feeding of protesters since the demonstrations began the sempra last year and he's also been charged over his role in the 1989 koum that
6:05 pm
ousted a democratically elected government and brought into power so while a verdict has been issued today it's not the end of former president bashir is legal problems people morgan there live from khartoum have a frank you. while saturday's trial was about corruption and illegal possession of foreign funds the share as you heard him say also faces additional charges and there's lots of them in 2009 the international criminal court charged him with 2 counts of war crimes and 5 counts of crimes against humanity and that was for his role in the war in darfur which started in 2003 at least 300000 people were killed and the mother $3000000.00 displaced a year later the same court in the hague brought 3 cramps of genocide also relating to darfur then in may this year after he was deposed sudan's public prosecutor charged him with quote inciting and participating in the killing of protesters activists say at least $100.00 people were killed and then in november he and several of his aides were charged for planning and carrying out the 1989 coup but
6:06 pm
brought him to power. well it may be bo is the founder and president of this is an a policy form a working group the focus is on policy oriented reform in sudan and he joins us here in doha on the program while it may be able very warm welcome to the program let's not then by looking at the verdict they found him guilty but this has been reduced to just 2 years in this rehab facility do you think this will be seen as a kind of political verdict that is designed to appease both sides absolutely i think this verdict has only added insult to injury. if you look at the whole situation. bashir of all what things he has committed yes so there are trials coming but obviously the day erection of things is telling us that it's not what needs to be achieved but the direction in which things are heading is is not is not giving us the right signal there are constitutional issues
6:07 pm
as well as political issues if we go back to the whole constitution of the document we realize that the whole issue of legal reform was completely left out. we don't know if this was done intentionally or not there are. the other lady who was helping him. or intuition and i think it's more of more like of intellectual incompetence than it is intentional mystic but the problem is there are lawyers very distinguished and prominent sudanese lawyers who have tried to bring in a lot of legal reform that would take care of the loophole in the document. of the most prominent among whom is if you don't have a number and he has thrived in. every pretty mean to
6:08 pm
a to introduce this legal reform document but so far apart from the prime minister's office which overwhelmingly approved it. i think the military council did not approve it at the time and here is where we have the loophole that those who are. passing a judgment against or moderate bashir are the ideologues that he himself has put in place so where do we go from magical i suppose my next question and leads on from that quite neatly because i'm guessing it's a fine balance between delivering on this accountability that's required has been spoken about so much but also not creating instability on the streets or as you say hi how do we make a move forward from here. i think the polluted political
6:09 pm
maneuver that needs to be done by duke even though he has approved of the law of legal reform he needs to get in get in political bargain with the military officers it's not out of a team relationship or team loyalty that they are being lenient to is the support that's over what had been an order but he himself they are afraid for their own source so he has to get in serious and good we invite again with them what is it exactly that they want i mean if it's giving them immunity. and bringing them as witnesses in court when we will entice them to help facilitate legal process then be it because otherwise they're going to block. whichever a lot of legal reform introduced to take care of the loopholes remember that they

have already rejected some very prominent lawyers who are normally needed for the legal justice system and for other branches of the legal system mainly jets are the guardian my humble government of the heart felt. immediately rejected those prominent figures in an industry of resisting them forces of freedom and change. immediately give in to the request brought other names who proved to be. evolutionary least for a very words they are complying with the demands of the previous military council will leave medical founder and president of this exam policy forum thank you very much sir for joining us. and over a controversial citizenship laws brought family friends of people onto the streets

across india now the bill allows tens of thousands of people from nearby countries to pride for citizenship but it doesn't 1 include miss them now that's triggered anger in west bengal where protesters set fire to railways demonstrators say that they are the law will mean an influx of immigrants from bangladesh will take jobs and discriminate against muslims well that sentiments been shared also in mumbai protesters from the eastern us some regions say the law will heighten linguistic differences between the native assamese people and bengali settlers meanwhile in the country's capital delhi exams have been canceled at a university where students clashed with the police during a demonstration on friday where also in india's capital rallies been organized by the main opposition congress party against that system chip law so he is there. thousands of people have gathered to cross india to protest the citizens here in new delhi belly have gathered not just here. but they're making their way to the main area where they expect to hear political leaders and civil society denounce
6:12 pm
the b j p government signed into law. the act as many see is discriminatory on many levels whether it be culturally socially or on religious grounds and for that reason civil society and the opposition led in this particular case by the all india congress are suggesting to the public at large that if you do not agree with the secular india or if you agree with a secular india then you have to come out onto the streets because our constitution is under threat that's the message that the opposition are trying to get out and that message is being replicated across states such as carola punjab and in west bengal the west bank or on sunday we're expecting a very large gathering of trinamool congress supporters led by the band the g. the chief minister that also denouncing what the central government in new delhi want to implement a soon as they possibly can for the moment it seems that the government will have

a much longer fight on their hands so i am reporting there until local reports now from the city of guwahati and the state of asked some where 2 people have died in those protests. 17 year old musician was killed in police fighting in go hearty in the capital of assam where thousands have come out on the streets to protest against indian government citizenship amendment act his family is in tears they say while they have lost their son a nice become a martyr in the largest struggle to protect assamese culture that by ensuring that no more migrants get indian citizenship and settle down in assam they don't want anybody else to protest the last all young men to stop the protests this incident has impacted the nature of protests in assam they have shifted from tire burning and rule blocking to more peaceful gatherings. so i mean the. minute he was
6:14 pm
just 17 was he a criminal he was on his way back from the protest but then the shot him just like that why did they shoot him who gave them the right to shoot him these students are sitting on a day long hunger strike and such protests are going to become routine at least that seems to be the strategy of the biggest student union in assam that's behind the movement these students say that they've been betrayed by the them or the that hindu nationalist party and that they may have made a mistake by watering the party to power they feel that the policies of this party and this government is against their interests that government is not big and had to decimus people because they know they have their own what's done so both illegal migrants do it we don't want banks and they don't bit of it we're getting above our sentiments our want to be sure that that's what it would say that we didn't miss a beat up in golf kept us in the dark they betrayed us people are queuing up outside to stations and cash machines the government has relaxed the curfew as most shops in the city of gaudy have now reopened but the governments of the united

states the united kingdom and canada have issued a travel warning to their citizens against traveling to the region the internet in assam still remains suspended people here on the ground say that while they want to go back to work and send their kids to school in their resistance is only going to grow. plenty more ahead on the new salary including too far to the left should u.s. democrats play colson attention to neighbors crushing defeat in the u.k. election. syrians that are still struggling after barely escaping the last rebel held province. and in sport it's been another dramatic day of the gulf president's car all the action coming up later by. north korea's armed forces a warning the u.s. . to refrain from any provocations if it wants to see a peaceful new year he did kim jong un has seen the 2nd weapons test within

a week in a rocket test site state media says the aim is to both defenses against u.s. nuclear threats north korea has given donald trump a u.n. deadline to drop demands for the unilateral denuclearization of the korean peninsula britain's prime minister boris johnson has visited areas of northern england the backed his conservative party for the very 1st time after decades of continuous support for the opposition labor party johnson's party was swept back into power in thursday's election with a large majority it is it is said shield the constituency previously held by former prime minister tony blair of the labor party here he promised people that his government would deliver. we are the servants now we are the servants you know as our job is to serve the people of this country and to deliver on our priorities and they're proud of our produce and their priorities are the there goes that getting wrecked but it is also delivering on our national health service our education

safer streets better hospitals a better future for our country that is what we are going to deliver. well paul brennan's been following the election in london and we've seen this visit to the north of england where boris i suppose wanted to give that personal touch if we could call it. you could call it the ass you could also say he's twisting the knife in a can in a constituency that was previously held by tony blair with a labor majority of some 20000 now overturned and turned conservative blue by the results of this general election so it depends on which way you're perspective is but certainly i think it was important for boris johnson to go to the northeast it was the cradle of all of the conservative revival in this 29000 election and i think it's also important because of what boris johnson is now saying to those northern seats which chose to move away from labor and go to war to the

conservatives he wants to say that he can be a one nation prime minister one nation conservative prime minister not just governing for the bankers and for the metropolitan elites but also for those working class northern towns which he admits perhaps their hand would have wavered their pencils wavering over the ballot paper before they choose chose to move from a votes a conservative and now he has to show that the trust was not misplaced that was a phrase that he's been using several times since the early hours of friday morning that the trust will not be betrayed that he will govern in the best interests nevertheless you know it's going to be a tall order because he is going to have to balance the kind of desires and requirements of those constituencies better public services for example bus services not traditionally things that the conservative party are seen to deliver from a public set from a public sense. brain and there and joins us live from london paul thank you.
6:19 pm
some senior democrats in the us have been paying very close attention to labor's worst general election defeat since 1935 like president trump boris johnson is a populist who put delivering bricks at the center of his his campaign as well as immigration carbons crushing defeat raises questions as to whether left leaning presidential candidates in the us like bernie sanders and elizabeth warren will be able to defeat trump in 2020 or pushing radical policies such as universal health care for all but the front runner of the democratic nomination joe biden says labor's defeat should actually serve as a warning not to move too far to the left and another hopeful michael bloomberg says candidates need to appeal to all americans wellington mitchell is a political analyst and professor of political science at columbia university joins us by skype from new york and mr mitchell very warm welcome to the program and what you think the lessons are if there are any indeed for for us parties to learn from
6:20 pm
the recent u.k. election and the rejection of the left. well the whole thank you for having me there's no question that the kind of big picture lesson that everyone seems to be taking away is that the democrats need to nominate somebody from the center but 1st of all that's a kind of there are no the democrats are just a bunch of people who think of themselves as democrats so there's no strong party that can act on that and secondly whatever was going to happen in this election in the united kingdom there was going to be a strain of moderate democrats that were saying that this proves we can't move too far to the left if corporate and labor party had one bite and his supporters would have said it but the united states is different so this is kind of where we always are in american politics and these electorates and these elections are different i mean the democratic party's base is much less white the u.s. electorate is much less white in an election both in the u.k. in the united states where white supremacy ism is kind of at the core that's a really key difference between these 2 countries that can't be ignored and can
6:21 pm
michel in terms of the coverage impeachment process i wonder from your perspective is that hearts at the core of his base or are can there be a window of using this to his advantage if you like if it goes to court in a public way and he showcases the concrete evidence or lack of it. well well there's a couple of questions there this is not affecting him by definition in his core of his base that 3rd of the country you know roughly speaking a 3rd of the electorate has bought into a kind of fantastic edifice of moscow sort of also is that they've created you know they believe that it was ukraine who hacked the 2016 election they believe trump is a corrupt corruption fighter fantasy is a nice way to describe it or the another way might be lies with the overall electorate the data here shows that this is not having a big impact the voters aren't saying aha trump is a criminal he's abusing the office we have to vote him out but more voters are moving in that direction then moving in the opposite direction remember the big
6:22 pm
trump defenders in the house particularly the house and also in the senate this week they haven't offered any counter-evidence right and they have not been allowed to call witnesses because the president will lead his people testify which may be a smart decision on the part of the president so all they have is their own spin and their own tantrums their own fantasies versus very credible witnesses like lieutenant colonel binman like fiona hill even like kurt volker so i suspect this moves voters slightly away from trump but i want to emphasize only slightly. in terms of the democratic party field in terms of candidates i can just go back to that for the 2nd how does that feel. well right now there's kind of 2 competing narratives one is that with everything that's going on joseph biden got in the race is the front runner and right now about 6 weeks before the 1st caucus in iowa he's still the front runner and i thought there's a very real possibility here that biden finishes in the top 2 or 3 in iowa new hampshire and part of the getting in the weeds here and then win south carolina and
6:23 pm
nevada is basically the nominee there's another narrative which adds a lot of volatility here who judge rose and then fell and then rose again or and rose the top and is now struggling bertie's been kind of a consistent solid 2nd some people are saying you know what come out of the race there's room for a meek little chart of breakthrough in iowa there will be 4 early states which i listed and after that there will be a few people who will come out of there by b.p. can finish in the 1st 3 in iowa new hampshire and south carolina will moot if he wins to judge if you wins iowa and sanders or ward at least one of those and then there's michael bloomberg with his $100000000.00 who's basically a liberal republican but has has once or in the democratic primary and he will be there with a lot of money as we move to states where money matters more because you can't go to the streets in california new york and texas those states are just too big and you have to be on television you have to be in social media so i think we come out
6:24 pm
of the 1st 4 states in early march with a 3 to 5 person race but the data keeps coming back to the reality that biden if you had to bet on somebody you would bet on biden but you might take the field against by at this point it's a political analyst a professor of political science at columbia university thank you very much sir for joining us thank you. well johnson's election victory will have major implications for the future of the united kingdom particularly with regards to northern ireland as sonia gago reports from belfast whatever bricks for exit deal is done will affect the relationship with iran and which remains in the european union. the u.k.'s election results have marked a historic change for irish nationalists never before have their representatives been elected to parliament in westminster in such numbers overtaking the unionists in an unprecedented outcome. for an election born of breck's it most believe
6:25 pm
northern ireland was always going to vote against prime minister boris johnson's mantra of get bricks it done this is largely remain country even for the brics it supported minority johnson's withdrawal deal that would place an economic border in the irish sea has angered many pro british unionists here fearful of irish nationalism many now believe northern ireland's identity is being sacrificed for an english cause they are concerned very very concerned because the demography in the monitor is already seeing a shift towards more people who identify as nationalist compared to us i think they're also very very upset very very annoyed with them because it for them he did people like throw them under the bus at the last in order to get his deal he sacrificed the peace concerns on the altar of getting a deal so that he going to this election with a deal in the back and supposed to deliver bricks or bricks that isn't
6:26 pm
a potential collision course with the delicate fabric of northern irish society and maintaining a borderless crossing between the north and the south is crucial to keeping stability here according to the good friday agreement. for decades since the 1960 s. protestant unionists and the mostly catholic nationalists were at war with each other but the good friday agreement in 1999 brought an end to that underpinning that was the removal of border infrastructure allowing people and goods from the north and south to travel freely between the 2 for unionists bricks it has ushered in fears that the province could be permanently bound with the irish republic further removing it from britain adding to this the northern irish assembly hasn't sat for almost 3 years following a political crisis but with bricks it now a clear u.k. policy talks between its. parties are due to be held on one day to try to restore
6:27 pm
the power sharing government and with more power now in the hands of the nationalists they could also lead to even huge push for a united ireland so a new variable al-jazeera belfast u.n. climate talks are continuing into the weekend in spain after negotiators failed to agree on major points talks at the cop 25 summit image of on friday protesters gathered outside for straight about the lack of progress leaders have been deadlocked over emissions reduction targets and how much money poorer countries should receive to cope with the impacts of climate change let's talk to our environment edison and clark joins us live from madrid hi there next to a very different mood this time around what set causing the holdups behind the scenes. well when you get to this point of the conference after 2 weeks and they go see asians it's all about wording and vocabulary and it sure applies this time right now remember this conference is all about nations coming
6:28 pm
here and being prepared to in homes their ambitions showing willing to enhance their ambitions for next year's conference in glasgow when the parents agreement really kicks in so last nights there was a draft text issued it wasn't perceived to be strong enough it was felt that the united states and brazil and japan had bolted it down too much so to go chasing teams the same back to the drawing board they worked at it all night enough the text was produce 8 o'clock this morning but again it wasn't enough because it only called for nations to offer to in holland's commitments to reduce carbon emissions as opposed to calling for them to reduce carbon emissions it is a very small issue semantics but that has enraged the ngos if they've said it's completely unfair it's unjust it's immoral it's pouring petrol on the fire so now it's gone back to the drawing board again we've just been to a press conference from the chilean presidency that are running this conference and they've said ok well we've listened to all the complaints and all the concerns and
6:29 pm
we appreciate that more ambition is required so we are going to release a new tax which is coming out about now which will demonstrates more ambition we'll have to see what actually come up with it make why do you think there is this kind of feeling of the atmosphere being different and this i think you just called it less ambitious why less than bishop this time. well because paris was all about just setting up the store for the years ahead it didn't actually legally encourage countries to make commitments so countries were during free will to do what they want to really is all about being prepared to do things and they come here and there's no obligation for countries to come up with the emissions cutting plans that they're required to do but there is it's not only about that it's also about other complications like carbon trading it is a feeling that the united states and brazil trying to cheat the system so that they
6:30 pm
can get away with having more carbon emissions without actually affecting their economies and also the issue of loss and damage which is about. compensating countries who have had effects from climate change and then when you look at what's happened in the world since the paris agreement in terms of catastrophes that are happening the floods i mean bush you can see that the agency is required here and given what we've experienced reporting in the last 3 months from kenya to the pacific out in palau you see floods you see drought you see rising sea levels all of this and yet there is this kind of inability to make progress at these big conferences clock they're joining us with that round up nice from the conference in madrid next thank you. still ahead here on al-jazeera a regional push tackle on groups in africa say hail we will have a live update from ali's capital. by indigenous communities in mexico could plans
6:31 pm
for a multi-billion dollar train project and in sport a bungee still strong at 34 years old it's me l.a. lakers take on the miami heat that story coming up later in the program. hello again welcome back to international weather forecast well here across much of the levant it is going to be a messy scenario now not looking too bad as we begin but a lot of the clouds are going to be coming out of the north and moving quite rapidly coming down towards the south baghdad it is going to be a partly cloudy day 20 here on sunday but notice as we go towards monday we do have a developing system across much of southern iraq that is going to draw in the moisture bring a lot of rain showers as well across much of the area kuwait city they expect to see some thunderstorms by the time we get towards monday with the temps if you of $21.00 degrees now that same system will be affecting us here in doha clouds are
6:32 pm
going to be the prominent feature here as we go towards sunday expect to see thunderstorms in the afternoon but by the time we do get towards monday and into tuesday things will be improving so here's a 3 day forecast watching those storms coming into place sunday night and into monday and tuesday temps about $24.00 that's average for this time of year but we do expect to see more sun in the forecast and then very quickly across parts of southern africa not look too bad for cape town over towards durban though in johannesburg we have seen some clouds pushing through we do expect to see more clouds there in durban at about 24 degrees but for cape town expect to see some windy conditions with attempt a few of about 20 degrees. i thought this conviction that everyone has a deep reservoir of tonic realty and if you can give them the opportunity wonderful things start to happen sometimes the simplest solutions are the most impactful yet
6:33 pm
no measure yet that ok so. the main thing is that sense i was 0 apart from other news organizations is that a lot of our reporting is about real people not about ideas or politicians or what they may want to do but how policies and how events affect real people it's ok it's ok to suck a. little more complicated operations probably if this is not an act of creation and i'm an item or 4 fifths of the work you're doing here is amazing but there are so many fossils and it feels like this is just a dent what was your relationship with joe not normal or ok this is because in this job isn't just about what's on a script or a piece of paper it's about what's happening right now.
