intimidation against the leaderless protest movement is growing. i don't think it's possible for people to see. the way that the way that they treated protesters yesterday and kind of turn a blind eye even if they were afraid it seems like they understand that unity numbers are really what. dana was among the dozens of protesters beaten up by security forces during saturday night's confrontations the worst since the uprising began in mid october both sides accused each other of instigating the violence there are fears this could be the beginning of a new phase what has largely been a peaceful opposition movement. seems to be a decision by those in power for the army and security forces to confront the protest and this is dangerous from the start of the uprising the army took a decision not to be harsh with the protesters but the situation has changed in the

a model where what we've been seeing since last evening is that over 100 students have been attacked during the protests that have been taking place across new delhi it's almost like a war like situation here are in. unfortunately we have enough reports coming in that the police have been you know throwing tear gas at students they have endured hostages they have abused physically attacked even that are reports of sexual abuse on guards that have been taking place across 4 stows in delhi now it's important to also note that this is john no university which is one of the biggest universities in india and also police where we have a lot of muslim students and other students from across india since last evening we've be just been seeing the attacks done by police on students what you would go on was last evening when there were reports of

a buses being bombed now again that is something that needs to be investigated whether it was but be treated by students already if. in fact that these were involved in it because there are videos that are being circulated around that us sending mixed signals at the moment. what i'm wondering sunny day that's the perfect phrase actually mixed signals because you've also got politically this idea that oh they're open to the idea of talking and possibly changing parts of it but then the actions on the ground go against that. yes well the protests that have been taking place have been taking place because of the new citizenship amendment that the government has been trying to or will be implementing soon politically we've not had much reaction coming in from the b j p ministers as a for now there have been talks where. the daily chief minister is trying to set up
12:09 pm
a meeting and see how this situation can be brought under control at the moment. what's your feelings about how this might actually go with regards to the political process as i say there is this openness apparently to talking but then this move was pushed through when there's been so much controversy about it in the 1st place . it's not going to go very well because there is an. attack going on on minorities in the country at the moment so at the moment we need to focus on how this can be brought under control because these attacks are spreading across universities we've had students from mighty good muslim university that have been attacked we have students from delhi university that are being attacked so politically at the moment it's it's we had at the dangerous point where . this could but haps what we're getting is action against the students itself action against minority it's because the reports that are being spread is that it's

an overhaul of the political system the support from. baghdad. a constitutional crisis is looming in iraq's parliament the summer the 1st was when m.p.'s accepted the resignation of outgoing prime minister. president barham saleh has until december 16th to nominate his replacement who will have to form a new government within 30 days. if the deadline is not met will be facing a violation of the constitution and that means all options are available including holding the president responsible for breaking the law as well as early elections. complicating things further one of the largest political coalition blocks of parliament which includes the crisis ali party say they are not going to support any candidate proposed by the president widespread anti western sentiments here only deepen the political divides the new prime minister must be able to balance
12:17 pm
the fragile relationship iraq has with both neighboring iran and the united states this banner reads that whoever the next prime minister is going to read it will fail because he hasn't been elected by the people here it's our various where now despite all the security threats of his demonstrators phrase on a regular basis the president is not of the security of residents here and those include for nothing 'd to sadly through the fighting that's going on the scene there is no worse as they continue to come out on a regular basis but the longer this border for uncertainty continues the longer these demonstrators remain vulnerable to attacks since the latest series of protests began here on october the 1st of these 460 people have been killed and thousands injured many blame the crackdown on militias backed by iran. and it we know that by coming to the square we are taking a risk we may be detained we may be killed but it is still out g.t.

protests demanding political change more jobs and less corruption go on and the security situation continues to deteriorate day by day iraqis are also crying out for leadership and stability dorsetshire pari al jazeera back down. well the united nations is hosting its 1st ever global refugee forum in geneva to look at ways to improve the lives of millions across the globe the 3 day event comes as the number of refugees is rising more than 17000000 people are displaced by war conflict and persecution 25000000 of them are refugees who crossed international borders and are unable to return to their homes last year the u.n. general assembly agreed on a deal to improve the way the world responds and helps refugees well we've got kelly clements with us now the deputy high commission at the u.n. refugee agency joining us from geneva kelly thanks for your time one of the things i've read about this forum is that you're actually. consulting refugees themselves
12:20 pm
throughout the whole process which sounds different from the sort of usual ideas of gathering and talking and maybe pledging money or support. indeed thanks thanks 1st of all for your for your interest and attention indeed refugees are right at the center of this global refugee forum both refugee participants speakers refugee led organizations and this really came to a combination last december when the general assembly adopted the global compact on refugees it was with their ideas their their ingenuity to try to drive what we're looking at in terms of solutions this is not going to be your normal un meeting by any stretch we have over 3000 people that will be joining us from all walks of life from government international organizations non-governmental organizations civil society and business in order to try to find solutions to these refugee situation some of them which have been going on for decades what do you want to come out of it at the end of the 3 days under sort of thinking about you know this is
12:21 pm
a strange comparison but we just had the climate summit in madrid which couldn't find some sort of agreement in the end do you want some sort of collective or is communique at the end an end some concrete achievements. well in indeed what we're looking at is not just words but action we expect that the that the participants will be coming with pledges and commitments of what they plan to do what they've already done this can be policy change new legislation its financial of course its humanitarian visas resettlement locations its solutions to trying to make both the lives of refugees and their host different so it's not a communique so much as it's a package of pledges and commitments in various areas like that hurts edge especially inclusion yes that doesn't include pledges to. will stop the things which are leading to refugees having to leave in the 1st place and you've got to go to the source of the problem going to stop the wars and stop the inequality which then stapleton has to leave we have the 25000000 refugees you mentioned because
12:22 pm
of absence of political solutions so we're looking at solutions both to enable them to hopefully be able to go home or to try to rebuild their lives elsewhere now this has to go to a root cause is preventative but it also goes to solutions in terms of trying to make sure that they're in a place where once conditions are right they're able to go home voluntarily and safely or able to rebuild their lives it's self reliance but it's also trying to ease the burden on host communities that have been hosting them from a very very long time kelly does the problem ever feel too big you know this is your job and you've got so many people around you trying to deal with this but it is a problem that as i pointed out in there and try it just keeps growing. indeed it does and i think for many of us we would like nothing better than to work ourselves out of a job and this we're coming out of a very turbulent decade and we're going into a new decade with some hope that we actually can see some progress and be able to
12:23 pm
see some solutions for refugees coming claimants from the un's refugee agency joining us from geneva thank you kelly. now a crackdown on press freedom this is a report from the committee to protect journalists and its a choosing china of preventing journalists in hong kong and taiwan from reporting freely it details an increasingly constrained media environment in hong kong where pro beijing outlets outnumber the independent ones probating groups are accused of scaring off companies from advertising with independent outlets you can be critical of china the report says that been repeated unprovoked police attacks on journalists in hong kong has covered the protests the committee to protect journalists says these are the effects of china's rising influence on a region that once had free press. in hong kong with more on what the report says. this report focuses on the chinese. in hong kong due to china's increasing influence and it says the overall situational conclusion is not positive it says
12:24 pm
china's diminishing inhibitions to intervene in hong kong internal affairs is having an unfortunate consequences for those media outlets and journalists it's a close of home comes more restrictive media environment is increasing control of a large number of media companies which have come on the mainland chinese on a ship or influence now says those media outlets with a pro china slant attracting greater investment by the advertising and tracking greater financial resources now the author notes to be china as a result now that's translated to greater pressure on the independent media outlets it says there is media outlets under funded now and stop advertising income now the independent media landscape shopping online is bible but it's underfunded as a result as noted in this report now also in this particular report by the committee to protect journalists and their knowledge of the increasing number of violent attacks on the media in the last 6 months the cult of the poor is stephen but it's put the media on the front line against police and we've seen many
