day's sporting including china says arsenal's mesut ozil has been deceived by fake news over his comments about week or mostly. their warm welcome to this hour the u.n. security council is meeting to discuss peace and security in west africa just days after fighting. 7. from the sheriff's army near the border with mali earlier leaders in the sun halo region also hold an emergency meeting in asia to discuss the escalating attacks we'll go live to kristen salumi at the united nations for the latest on those talks shortly we'll also be live in mali's capital bamako where but address is standing by for us but 1st he has this report. these are desperate
6:02 pm
times to africa have we jim armed groups are inflicting heavy losses to armies and forcing thousands of civilians from their homes. leaders of the countries affected nor does g 5 scrambled this meeting in yemi to urgently find a solution almost president mohamed use of force says the frequency of sophistication of recent attacks is wars of. the scale of terrorist attacks are getting larger day after day terrorists are getting more sophisticated weapons the terrorists have been real war professionals they progress every day on the strategic operative and tactical levels the g 5 chairman appealed for a new strategy to phrase the growing threat. we must work together to ensure victory against terrorism in the short middle and long term as the case in other countries fighting terrorism we need allies in alliance characterized with responsibility cooperation and respect for each other. at the end of the meeting
6:03 pm
the leaders resolve to work together to fight the armed groups which until now has been largely carried out by international lobbies. leaders have agreed to improve cooperation between national forces joint military operations and international allies as well as bit of coordination on both a political and strategic level they've also agreed on information sharing between security institutions and the countries to better fight terrorism. earlier the leaders paid their respects at the graves of 720 just soldiers killed last week when fighters linked to eisele over on that base in the ninety's more than 230 soldiers have been killed in mali but in a possible and here over the last 4 months in addition to 13 french troops who died in helicopter pollution while hunting for the fighters in the lectured region before and it's really it's a rabbit out of touch with you know i mean and that's it you can see here raising concerns of more violence in the coming weeks and months the g 5 leaders have
6:04 pm
concluded their summit but their citizens living on the front lines are desperate for help for now although it's not clear if the resolutions of the summit will do that. let's go live to ahmed addresses in mali is the capital bamako for us hi there what are the hopes then for this meeting. well basically looking at the devastation over the last one week or so is probably one of the things that leaders will be discussing about and while they held meeting was holding in yemen by the way there were reported attacks in kenya faso and book around me still active in parts of nigeria and parts of charred cameroon and even new jersey by the way the recent attacks that we've seen course in devastating losses on the army was actually on the other side of the border near mali and not
6:05 pm
quite away from the border with mali and there were reports that some of the fighters prost over from mali to attack the soyuz in yemen so these are difficult times not only for the soldiers or for his in this country but local communities will be hit hard by these disasters or other these are tied by groups in this a hell so basically what people are hoping is that the united nations despite its huge presence here in mali about 15000 international troops in this country these attacks still continue and this is getting more and more warring for local communities they can't understand how international forces will arm us or will must in a country and then stop these attacks from happening every now and then so their expectations of the meeting at the united nations in new york today is such that the united nations will be. will further engage itself in directly in tackling these
6:06 pm
attacks and bringing evidence this situation under control. the lines go with that update as many. well as uk made mention there let's cross over now to that united nations meeting in new york where the u.n. security council is meeting to discuss the recent violence and kristen salumi is live there for us hi there kristen what exactly is the wall of the u.n. here in trying to address the violence across the sahara. well i have to tell you that this meeting was actually called. to look at violence and terrorism in the region of west africa and the set how writ large this is a very formulaic meeting that was called by the united states they submitted a concept note as to what they wanted to discuss it is not in direct response at all to the recent violence that we saw in error and that attack which was you know claimed by ice so this is not the focus of this meeting the united states said it
6:07 pm
wanted to look at underlying issues and a rise in violence not only terrorist violence but also intercommunal violence and they point to in this note issues of poor governance herder farmer conflicts issues like this that need to be addressed to get to the root causes of a rise in violence so what we expect from this meeting is to hear from the un office for west africa and the sahara about what they are doing to make peace between warring factions in different groups in different countries very very nitty gritty type details about government what we don't expect to hear from is peacekeepers in the region we don't expect to hear from maneuver the. the peacekeeping unit which is in mali near where these attacks happened they are not scheduled to brief at this meeting we know that the mandate for the un office for
6:08 pm
west africa in the set how expires at the end of the year so there may be some discussion about strengthening that mandate to try to help the situation and certainly. we expect the recent events there will give some urgency to the speeches that we hear from various countries but again this is a very formulaic meeting on a renewal of a mandate that is expected to come underlying causes and not expected to address directly the recent violence in the region christensen in there with that update live at the united nations kristen thank you. at least 12 people have been killed in a rebel attack in the eastern democratic republic of congo it happened overnight on monday in the terror to your territory of what now just a day earlier 32 people were killed in another attack in bed ne the eastern region has seen a wave of attacks by a rebel group called the allied democratic forces least 179 civilians have been

killed since october when the government launched an offensive against the rebels. opposition parties in the gambia are rallying against president adama barrel they want barrels to honor his promise to step down by the end of this year he made that commitment in a deal to form a coalition government 3 years ago but has since changed his mind saying he will serve his food year term barrel's 2016 election victory and of the 22 year rule of former leader jamey well nicholas hawke is in banjul where protesters say president barrel has made living conditions worse than they were in previous years the beginning there was hundreds of people and then the crowd swelled up to tens of thousands and they've successfully handed over their petition to the spokesperson of the government a petition asking for adam a barrier to step down their slogan is just no which in the local language means it's time it's time for adam a barrow to step down remember in 2016 on this very road there were tens of
6:10 pm
thousands of people protesting against the former longtime president in support of adam a barrow today we saw the same people who supported adam a baro asking him now to step down he had made a promise that he would stay in power just for 3 years but it seems he says that he will continue to stay to power complete his full mandate he says he's respecting the constitution but that's something that the protesters here are not buying they believe that he just wants to cling on to power they fear also that some members of his government or leaders of a performer political leaders or close allies too. and although he had promised at the time to change change for the people here and while there has been more political freedom change has been slow to come when it comes to security reform is going to come to the change of leadership when it comes to basic things like power

persecuted religious minorities from neighboring countries but it screwed muslims well and it's been sweeping across india's universities in the northern city of lochlann hundreds of students pelted with rocks after they were blocked from leaving their campus to join a march on them protest to a universities in the southern city of hyderabad which has a large muslim minority and dozens of people have been injured in new delhi after police armed with baton stormed another campus protest well that violence now has students fearing for their safety net has the very latest. hundreds of students marched in anger the citizen amendment act was passed by parliament last week and allows illegal migrants from 6 religious minorities to acquire citizenship in india but it excludes muslims and these protesters want to provoked the oath is not just about about us is not about the why not it is about
6:13 pm
the cartridge is against the nation and what it is and what is the foundation of. police met local people and students from jimmy up millia islamia university as they marched towards the parliament building and trying to disperse them. the situation turned violent and buses and cars were set on fire. and the local media say police entered a university classroom and detained students some by force. a bill hamid is one of 100 students who were injured he says his arm was fractured i was surrounded by those so many policeman leg 6 to 7 could is there the stuff started beating me and it was brutal attack they were not using martins they were using some other sticks oh very aside sticks of wood so maybe i don't know whether
6:14 pm
they were using blades nails. kind of brutal attack that was. thousands of people joined the demonstrations as they continued into the night and spread across the country in hyderabad right police fired tear gas and rubber bullets the police have been accused of being heavy handed but they say they've used necessary force. if it was a peaceful mob it would have been peacefully dispersed but it caused damage to public property arson and set motorcycles on fire protesters threw stones at police and we have been injured it's in the police interest to push them back and bring law and order. the controversial law allow citizenship to be granted to minorities from 3 neighboring countries but the opposition says it discriminates on religious grounds especially against muslims and goes against india's secular constitution and with anti muslim rhetoric increasingly being used in india pressure is mounting
6:15 pm
on the prime minister to reduce tensions. now protests to say they'll continue to demonstrate until the citizen law is revoked and their voices are heard for him mohammed al jazeera. well below aus aid is a social media entrepreneur and campaigner in new delhi he lives near the university where sunday mornings violence rally to place but he says the conflict hasn't yet deterred protesters and how bad the brutal crackdown yes to be. barren and we of course understand that you know a lot of the. priest had suffered injuries were getting numbered beyond 100000 people say that some of the injuries are also very serious some of the students also ended up being in i.c.u. this morning before some of those are the 4 have also protesters coming back to the streets but this time though the protests were not of him and there was no while in
6:16 pm
for him for 3 months of the protests today that we saw in the dummy an area were largely symbolic some young people came off and they're short of a final 3. and it continues to be nonwhite and so yes so the commotion all day today that is very very good of the police and the security deployment in the board you know there's this constant communication between the police and the local or the political will to try to give them a sense of what what is a good time to be out on the streets and perhaps after after the fun down. on worth of pain to that that you do before. unprecedented requirement of looking. people entire neighborhoods so that's largely something that people are now really looking looking. at in time if you really possible locals that you know dead they're moving in terms of wanting to make a statement of wanting to be part of the resistance that hasn't gone anywhere even
6:17 pm
after that the crackdown that people are getting the. lebanon's president has delayed consultations with political parties that was supposed to lead to the naming of the new prime minister it follows another night of violence where security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets a protest as parliament said hotter has more from. minutes before the constitutional process to form a new government was set to start lebanon's presidency postponed consultations until thursday politicians were to name their choice of prime minister and saddle heidi the caretaker prime minister was supposed to be renamed but he requested the men to avoid in his words violating the constitution and preserving unity among the nation sects. it seems the christian participation or vote is the reason why it was delayed the lebanese forces party is refusing to name a prime minister from the political class and the other main christian party the free political movement is refusing to name this is the real problem lebanon's
6:18 pm
leaders who share power based on a sectarian political system are deeply divided how did he says he wants to head a government free from the influence of political parties his rivals led by the iranian backed hezbollah who are part of the governing alliance and hold the majority in parliament say they won't give up power there come from mars is hard to teach because every party is sticking to its position and. ruling or 30 it didn't budge for one single inch and it's true that the prime minister of trees aren't but since then they are trying to reproduce the same or this or preventing the same system a change in leadership is what anti-establishment protesters have been demanding for 2 months but the largely peaceful uprising against those who have ruled lebanon for 30 years has turned violent in recent days confrontations between unarmed
6:19 pm
protesters and security forces is raising fears about stability and security. political deadlock is not rare in lebanon but there is an urgent need to form a government the country is in turmoil the ruling class is bargaining over power while workers are losing their jobs companies are closing the local currency is losing its value and people do not have access to their money and banks the economy is on the brink of collapse but even international financial assistance is being conditioned to the formation of a government that meets the aspirations of the lebanese people and now the united nations is warning the political impasse create fertile ground for provocations and political manipulation that can lead to more violence than a. boot well carmen get her is a political activists and assistant professor of public administration at the american university of they would she joins us by skype from they were common good have very well and welcome to the program how denying to our protesters right now
6:20 pm
i'm assuming there are diverse groups on the streets. and well good evening and thank you so much for telling the story in lebanon is a small country i know that there are bigger problems in the world but we are people who are fighting for better leadership for competent leadership and the protesters have been quite overwhelmingly and remarkably united in their demand for a competent government that is not composed of this insectarium political corrupt elite to have ruled this country for the last 30 years so it's been a very empowering experience to take one to these protests people stand united behind this demand carmen we've seen what's been described in the press in the media as a kind of skirmishes a violent clashes with protesters and security forces what's really going on behind the scenes. yes i wanted to clarify this because that also and the way that you covered the story it looks like there are clashes with the police and that is true
6:21 pm
but that is not the only truth we have been fixing a counter revolution from so lebanon doesn't have one dictator it has multiple dictators who have decided after the civil war and love it on 30 years ago to divide power among them and each of them employs a very meticulous media and security apparent us and plan to. in order to suppress any demand to overhaul them to change them and demand for basic rights so 1st of all the politicians are not in of course in caps they are in agreement around keeping the system and supporting their own interests and what happened last night was not clashes but that was the police it was a bad un peace protesters from policemen that are supposed to be protecting the parliament and from the bugs that were sent by the market forces maybe a man has blood to hurt the protesters this is what happened last night and the matter before and carmen is there a feeling that by maintaining peaceful protests that they're still you know a unique power in that to hold the well the government as as we hope that will be
6:22 pm
formed to some sort of the time to keep the pressure on if you like. yes of course we don't have an option except to remain peaceful they are the political parties who been in london on the last 30 years then project this war destruction bubble tea and sectarianism they are not political parties nor public officials but it is to build a project well it is that they do it floods because they can't even fix the pipelines and the infrastructure we haven't picked up the garbage in the last 5 years we have the highest cancer every family in lebanon has cancer the highest cancer of it in west africa they are bored of the structure the are the peaceful protesters our demands are by the pool and we've been extremely united this saying all of the need to go into an independent judiciary and investigation into what they've done the last 30 years were that konami crisis as as you presented in the introduction to the segment we can't get money from the bank as it grew spotted people have been committing suicide i mean this is not
6:23 pm
a time for them to clean their hands and come back to power this is a time to change them come again our joining us there live from beirut common thank you very much for your input thank you so much. iraq's president has until the end of monday to nominate a new prime minister abdul mufti just signed last month but that stun little to come protest is demanding a complete overhaul of the sectarian political system now the latest demonstrations started in october but there were similar protests last year by spread corruption high unemployment poor public services and a low standard of living are angering millions of people at least $476.00 iraqis have been killed and 20000 injured just the last 2 months of demonstrations calling for change well i've not had to simona folson who's in baghdad for us hi there simona 'd so the largest bloc in parliament is supposed to put forth this nomination for the new prime minister by midnight but it doesn't seem like this
6:24 pm
will happen but what's the latest. well indeed it does not seem like it will happen tonight 1st of all there is an agreement on when exactly the 15 days that are stipulated in the constitution are over parliament approved prime minister at all of them of his resignation on december 1st but his resignation was in forwarded to the president until december 4th so the new deadline we are told is now on thursday what is also confusing is which bloc in parliament should actually nominate a new prime minister according to the constitution the president is supposed to ask the biggest block in parliament to agree on a candidate now it is unclear which block is actually the largest and this is very peculiar and very typical of iraqi politics because many members of parliament switch allegiances the both are not public nobody really ever knows how many seats are controlled by a party and the president actually sent
6:25 pm
a letter yesterday to the speaker of parliament asking him to clarify who is the largest bloc now of course this comes very late in this process this is something that has been clear a long time ago but it just highlights how. your disposes is how little transparency there is and this is precisely the reason why many iraqis are asking not for just the new prime minister but for a complete overhaul of the political system and do we have any idea then about who the proposed candidates might be. well there have been several names that have been floated around as i mentioned it's a very obscure process that this basically the result of backroom dealings by the one name that has come up quite often is the name of mohammed our sudan who is a member of the dawa party which is the biggest ruling party that has been in place since 2003 and he also held several ministerial posts before so he's very much a considered to be part of the political establishment that's exactly what
6:26 pm
protesters don't want they want somebody who has not served before somebody who is not beholden to the current political parties who is actually capable of pushing through very controversial reforms and that's definitely not mohamed also that he has already been rejected by the protesters so it remains to be seen whether he is indeed the one who will be nominated but in any case people want a fresh face they don't want anybody who has held an office in the past simona falls in there with the latest live from baghdad similar thank you at least 4 people were killed in sunday's powerful earthquake in the southern philippines where skiers are searching for survivors after that magnitude $6.00 quake hit off the island of mindanao the region still recovering from a series of quakes back in october well jimmy allen dorgan is in doubt where family members are waiting for news of the missing. we're in the town of for that in the bodos sore one of the areas bearing the brunt of the earthquakes devastation we are
6:27 pm
right in front of what used to be a 3 story building now this is what's left of it this was a grocery mart where people used to go to to buy their provisions both the tome and their offices it is believed that several people remain still trapped at the ground floor of what used to be the ground floor of this building from where i am i can still hear rescuers trying to break in breaking glass is hoping that there will still be survivors rescuers have been telling us they have been working overtime since the earthquake struck sunday afternoon several bodies have already been pulled out and they said that as early as monday morning someone was still able to send a message asking for help from inside they have already lost contact since over there some of them are actually relatives of those missing hoping for some good news about their loved ones we've spoken to the mayor and the governor of dubbo those
6:28 pm
soar and they were telling us basically what that they are asking for is for people to stay calm people here on the edge afraid of the earthquake and its aftershocks and it's not only here in davos those sore the region of mindanao many parts of it has been battered by a series of earthquakes over the last few months thousands of people have already been displaced but what the government is trying to assure everyone that they are prepared and that they are able to send aid to those who needed most. still ahead here on al-jazeera they make a living out of rubbish but now these recitals in argentina are worried about their feature plus. one way to get many entrepreneurs are defying all odds to keep a colorful engstrand tradition alive and score the bond james leads the lakers to another victory as they continue to extend their winning streak all the n.b.a. action coming up after the break with a. howler

it's rained again in the evidence syria the clacker interests iraq and for the next 24 hours just think of it is raining in iraq to clean the planes in the east there's a sudden this is well that's been significant rain through qatar bahrain and some in eastern sides too coming together will keep going east was taking snows for the high ground of iran so the border was turkmenistan and then you've got a snowy day for the high ground in afghanistan as well the talent is running down towards you as you can see we're following that the sun is out the temps haven't changed very much baghdad's a little warmer and a little sunnier than normally when this rain goes sure this is position on tuesday from iran then taking off in the east side wants us calls for you tend to give us your mild following in this case it might be disrupted because the still cloud

lugging behind potential of a thunderstorm or 2 still to come in for example battering or cutter in southern africa having had a lot of rain in tile in the last week or 2 it's looking draw at the moment we'll develop a little bit more right in the city to the next day or so it's not obvious here on tuesday unfortunately the co to sort it out is that the old namibia attendance disappear so the rain has gone south.

they're watching out to see are a mind of our top stories this hour u.n. security council is meeting to discuss the recent violence in west africa last week fighters linked to eisele killed 71 soldiers from the shares army or the border with mali leaders from the so hell region also held meetings opposition parties in the gambia are rallying against president they want him to on the his promise to step down by the end of this year he made that commitment in a deal to form a coalition government 3 years ago. india's supreme court it's tuesday here petitions challenging a controversial new citizenship law and state anger over about legislation has now spread to university campuses. in the u.s. the house judiciary committee has released a report lining what it says is evidence of quote high crimes by the president the

committee approved 2 articles of impeachment against on friday the report lays out the democrats' case against the president and what they say is an urgent need to impeach him the house of representatives is expected to vote on it in the next few days if that full passes trump will be tried in the republican controlled senate bill for more on this let's bring in law roslin jordan in washington d.c. hi there were also and so tell us a bit more then about this full report and its contents. well the report is 658 pages long and it's basically the evidence put hind the 2 articles of impeachment which were approved last week along party lines by the u.s. house of representatives this report makes 3 essential points one that the president did try to use the power of his office in order to what induce a person in a foreign country to do something for him for his personal political benefit the
6:34 pm
report also says that this in danger to national security and it says that it is expedient it is urgent that the u.s. congress deal with this matter as quickly as possible because of the very real risk that the president will try to do this again ahead of the 2020 a lot and that would send a message that anyone would be above the law and according to this report from the house judiciary committee the u.s. congress has a legal and moral authority to up prevent those things from happening ross has the president said anything he's been incredibly vocal on this process up until now. well the president has tweeted in the last hour or so saying that the general public should quote read the transcripts something which he has argued before which essentially absolve him even though many who have read the transcripts of the hearings before the house intelligence committee earlier this year would see that
6:35 pm
there is a preponderance of evidence suggesting that the president abused his power in order to attain a personal political benefit of course this is a question that is coming up as the house of representatives gets ready to vote on these matters on wednesday and to try to send this matter to the u.s. senate for trial. there joining us with the latest from washington d.c. also as always thank you. argentina has since start importing rubbish but those who depend on reciting to make a living say it could threaten their livelihood there is to raise a bill has more now from what desirous. recycling has been for years the way these people have of making a living. says she makes around $250.00 a month and it helps her provide for her 4 children. this helps i have 4 kids and

now the independent media so the online is vibrant but it's underfunded as a result as knowledge of in this report now also in this particular horse by the committee for protect journalists and their knowledge of the increasing number of attacks on the media in the last 6 months the cult of the reporter is stephen but it's put the media on the front line against police and we've seen many instances of police. is leading really gratuitous attacks on journalists journalists who were standing at the side who were tear gassed or whatever spray or in the case of one journalist who was hit by you know rubber bullet in your eyes i cited. and there's no justice in any of these none of these cases are being investigated so far as we know. and the police are not being held to account and so i think this has led to an increasing divide hong kong's chief executive kerri lamb is currently in beijing this morning on monday she met with premier league and the south today

people superiority or losing their broadcast rights in china and the loss of football fans will lead to an economic loss and damage their image they must pay a price for this i mean. if you are discussing sovereign rights with another sovereign state you need to show respect you can't just make comments like this even harshly with which will resume you if you're a football star you should comment only all football if you don't understand this message then there's no need for you to make comments about politics you know a politician on sunday mass shooting manchester city and also which was supposed to be for cost the suddenly sparking concerns that also have a similar crisis as the n.b.a. ate up to houston rockets general manager joe mori who didn't support the pro-democracy protesters in hong kong in october now that so many chinese businesses cut ties with the n.b.a. and since the no houston rockets much has been broadcast on the mainland now

football fans are saying that those comments are arguably worse because he seems to endorse these talks which is seen as a separatist terrorist organization here in china now also have moved quickly to distance themselves from the comments saying that they are nonpolitical organization they have millions of vested for in china and also is one of the best known football clubs here on the mainland but that may not be enough to here in china any discussion of sensitive topics such as hong kong or the league is strictly censored and a growing nationalism means that any criticism of the communist party is felt as a personal attack on the chinese people. well there are some mouthwatering ties in the last 16 of the champions league which takes place in february 1 of these former clubs gone when the roma dritte time winners around madrid are up against manchester city while the holders liverpool take on athletico madrid other standout matches see italian champions event his place leo and paris

a conveyor belt this is one of the things that makes the technology sustainable we did not air condition the whole stadium but target where the spectators are it's a unique technology that cats are introduced to the world. creating a meaningful legacy is a complex challenge but secondly for a small country posting such a huge tournament the host have to make sure the not only did the stadiums have a life beyond 2022 but that everything else that comes with the world cup also has a purpose before and after the main event. it means not just elite teams are given access to the dozens of new training pitches that have been built they're also home to a community league set up by world cup organizers now every community football league in the west has access to training facilities in 3 years time we're going to have the best footballers in the world coming here and at this moment in time for the next 3 years and after. our community football league with all of its players will
