their president urging him to keep his promise and step down. and china says arsenal football a message ozil was deceived by fake news when he criticized the treatment of weak a muslim. a top democrat in the u.s. senate has accused the president donald trump of orchestrating a cover up chuck schumer has called for the current and former white house aides to testify trump's expected impeachment trial he says republicans have no reason to keep witnesses from testifying unless the president has something to hide those aides include acting chief of salt stuff make mulvaney and the former national security adviser john bolton a vote in the democrat led house to impeach trump is expected to take place on wednesday if it passes he will then be tried in the republican controlled senate. i haven't seen
1:02 am
a single good argument about why these witnesses shouldn't testify what these documents be produced unless the president has something to hide and his supporters want that information hidden. the trial structure i outlined in my letter to leader mcconnell will ensure that all the relevant facts come out without dilatory action. on mike hanna joins us live now from washington how difficult is it going to be then for democrats republicans to resolve their differences of the the structure of the trial and how it might take place in the senate. well this has been at issue throughout the whole impeachment process no signs of any compromise from either side a willingness to bend in any way to the other's point of view republicans arguing very strongly that if democrats in the house had wanted to obtain these witnesses then they would have gone to court to enforce the subpoenas now the democrats
1:03 am
decided in the end not to go to court because they believed it would take too long for the legal process to get underway so they then decided to go ahead with drawing up these articles of impeachment without the witnesses so republicans in the senate are now saying well now you are asking us to produce these witnesses after you did not go to the trouble of going through a legal process to bring them to give you evidence within the house so that's the type of argument that one is getting in terms of the actual vote on the house floor which may be happening on wednesday that's all going to be determined by a meeting in the course of the next 24 hours when the house rules committee will sit and discuss decide exactly how the debate is going to play out in the house so this is where we are at this particular stage the rules off that house debate still to be laid out and then of course we are getting to the ongoing argument with what kind of rules will be in place for that senate trial asked because it's clear from
1:04 am
chuck schumer's remarks today that democrats are determined that there should be witnesses summoned all subpoenaed to participate in a senate trial particularly those that refuse to participate in the hearings that we had in the house after republicans refused to agree to this and the democrats don't drop their demands could it lead to a delay and a trial taking place. well no because the republicans do have the majority in the senate the magic figure there's $51.00 votes and it's a simple majority that will decide on the procedures of the whole process the vote itself in terms of the trial does require a 2 thirds but while the republicans remain in the majority in the senate they can determine exactly what evidence is heard how the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell insistent that he wants a very short trial he says that people have already made up their minds and indeed the vote has been along party lines all the way but an interesting fact merriam is
1:05 am
that the last impeachment trial that took place in the senate bill clinton back in 1009009 there are 16 members of the senate no members of the senate who will be sitting again in an impeachment trial now in 1909 it's significant to note that it read democrats voted along party lines in favor of bill clinton the vast majority of republicans did so as well only one voted against party lines so the precedent is there the impeachment is a process that now as it was nearly 20 years ago is something that still goes along along party lines it's very much a political process as much as any form of investigatory impeachment idea the whole the whole thing as certainly proved to be very partisan and contentious thank you very much my canner in washington. so china and russia are calling for an end to some of the sanctions on north korea they have proposed a draft u.n.

security council resolution which receives some of the sanctions lifted to quote enhanced the livelihood of the civilian population of the country the draft resolution also exempt the into korean rail and road project from u.n. sanctions it goes on to welcome the continued dialogue between the u.s. and north korea. india's prime minister has called for calm off to 5 days of violent protests demonstrators angered by a new law that office citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries but excludes muslims around ramadi tweeted that the protests are unfortunate and deeply distressing well he said the citizenship amendment act would not affect indians of any religion and he said it's only for those who faced years of persecution outside and have no other place to go except india modi called for peace unity and brotherhood so everyone to stay away from room among of falsehoods

the protests are not dying down instead they have been spreading to university campuses nationwide as anger at modi's government following allegations of police brutality during a rally on sunday that turned line and. the government has a text by interim university so we will fight for the constitution of india we've stated time and time again that we will fight against the government. spokesman on a porn a man on a visiting lecturer and doctoral researcher in politics at university of westminster center of democracy she says despite the discriminatory nature of the citizenship amendment will protesters are demonstrating for different reasons. the protests are right now prime the of 2 kinds so in the northeast region of india. have been having protest against fears of loud skin migration happening into the into these areas because of the citizenship amendment act while in mainland india

the protest is primary against the discriminator e nature of this bill and the protests have been guided in the short span of 36 i was in 16 universities all across india and there have been large scale valleys being carried out on the streets in the roads everywhere and for there has also been parliamentary opposition to this so these states of. job have outright beautifully used to implement this act in their in this state now in all the stories we're following 12 people have been killed in a rebel attack that took place in the eastern part of the democratic republic of congo the right happened on sunday night in the village of commando was just a day after at least $32.00 people died in another attack and benny which was blamed on the rebel allied democratic forces there the latest in a wave of deadly attacks which triggered protests against the congolese army and u.n. peacekeepers i residents who say they are failing to protect them linus will also destructive efforts to contain

a government the country is in turmoil the ruling class is bargaining over power while workers are losing their jobs companies are closing the local currency is losing its value. and people do not have access to their money and banks the economy is on the brink of collapse but even international financial assistance is being conditioned to the formation of a government that meets the aspirations of the lebanese people and now the united nations is warning the political impasse creates fertile ground for provocations and political manipulation that could lead to more violence so. it is a very similar situation in iraq where the president's deadline to nominate a new prime minister there is also been extended until thursday. stepped down from the post last month after weeks of violent protests in which $476.00 people were killed since then people have continued to demonstrate demanding a complete overhaul of the political system he said they're angry at widespread corruption on employment and poor public services. and has more from baghdad.
1:23 am
the new deadline we are told is now on thursday what is also confusing is which bloc in parliament should actually nominate a new prime minister according to the constitution the president is supposed to ask the biggest block in parliament to agree on a candidate now it is unclear which block is actually the largest and this is very peculiar and very typical of iraqi politics because many members of parliament switch allegiances the votes are not public so nobody really ever knows how many seats are controlled by a given party and the president actually sent a letter yesterday to the speaker of parliament asking him to clarify who is the largest bloc now of course this comes very late in this process this is something that has been clear a long time ago but it just highlights how obscure this process is how little transparency there is and this is precisely the reason why many iraqis are asking not for just the new prime minister but for
1:24 am
a complete overhaul of the political system it's a very obscure process that is basically the result of backroom dealings by the one name that has come up quite often is the name of mohamed sudan who is a member of our party which is the biggest ruling party that has been in place since 2003 and he also held several ministerial posts before so he's very much a considered to be part of the political establishment in that's exactly what protesters don't want they want somebody who has not served before somebody who is not beholden to the current political parties who is actually capable of pushing through very controversial reforms and that's definitely not mohammed also that he has already been rejected by the protesters so it remains to be seen whether he is indeed the one who will be nominated but in any case people want a fresh face they don't want anybody who has held an office in the past. now when israel is pro-government constituent assembly is approved the trial of opposition
