al-jazeera. al jazeera. hello there i'm how the markets in endo hala this is the al-jazeera news are coming up for you in the next 60 minutes iran votes harsh revenge after a u.s. air strike in baghdad kills elite force commander qassam solomonic. the u.s. says it remains committed to deescalation with iran but is prepared to defend itself. iraq and lebanon fear they'll be caught in the middle of the escalating
9:01 pm
tension between the u.s. and iran. also ahead one of the largest evacuations in a strangely as history is under way with hot weather and strong winds expected to worsen already devastating wildfires. well it's 18 gnc 9 pm in baghdad on at 10 stay a cross the middle east's iran has vowed to retaliate strongly after the u.s. killed the commander who spearheaded to han's military operations across the region major general qassam saw him on a no the air strike targeting solo money occurred on a road at baghdad airport just a day after pearl iran protesters ended a siege at the u.s. embassy in iraq near the pentagon says president donald trump ordered the attack to
9:02 pm
protect u.s. personnel abroad the u.s. embassy in baghdad has no urged all americans to leave iraq immediately iran's supreme leader has called for 3 days of national mourning ayatollah ali how many warned of harsh revenge and said the attack would double sounds resolved to resist the united states. ates iraq's prime minister says the strike will spark a devastating war and lebanon has called for the country and why is a region to be spared any repercussions that will speak to our correspondents in the middle east as well as the us but 1st this report from saying this ravi check on on i have heartbreak in the upper ranks of the iranian military at the official announcement of the death of major general custom so the money the commander of iran's could force the revolutionary guard unit responsible for foreign operations so the money was killed in a u.s. drone strike in both dog.
9:03 pm
and anger at friday prayers in the iranian capital for the assassination of a man who led the charge against eisel in iraq and syria and whose death seems likely to lead to more conflict. back to shake a man god willing it is now time to clear and cleanse the region of these devils it is now time to show the resistance to the americans and show our resistance with action to tell those yankees to get out of here get lost. in the early hours of friday morning shortly after arriving in baghdad international airport u.s. missiles killed so the money and his close ally of the old 100 s. other members of the group were also killed in the attack a drone strike hit their convoy as they left the airport for iran's supreme leader ayatollah ali come in a slow money was a trusted confidant a member of his inner circle his killing in a targeted attack the most extreme escalation in tensions between tehran and
9:04 pm
washington in recent years come and he warned there will be revenge. the cruelest people on earth assassinated the honorable commander who courageously fought for years against the evils and bandis of the world sulaimani is martyrdom will make iran more decisive to resist america's expansionism and to defend our islam it values would no doubt iran and other freedom seeking countries in the region will take his revenge into her own senior leaders met in an emergency meeting of iran's national security council many iranians see the u.s. attack as an act of war across the region there will be implications anywhere where there is an american military presence. american should should leave those countries immediately but if i was in the emirates i would leave now if i was an american in iraq i would leave now if i was an american any part in southwest asia
9:05 pm
i would leave immediately. the united nations high commissioner for human rights described the killings as a likely violation of international law the idea that iran is not going to respond is wishful thinking that will make the debacle of invading iraq look like a walk in the park i do not think that president trump really understands why he's gotten the united states into going up against iran i would argue that going to war with iran will be the most significant adversary that the united states has encountered since world war 2 u.s. secretary of state michael impale tweeted a video showing iraqis celebrating the attack feared by his enemies inside iran so the money has for years been one of the most popular national figures in the country the international face of iranian resistance to american pressure he remained largely untouched by the waning popularity in recent years of the country's government over economic issues. while there is talk of revenge
9:06 pm
many iranians don't want to see a war but not totally sure i'm going to tell you mr trump unfortunately acted decisively saying that we won't go for war but push they should toward the leaders must exercise restraint so that the tension in the region wouldn't increase further because this can have very serious consequences for the countries in the region their own support them and it will definitely increase violence but i fundamentally disagree with violence and conflict i believe people moving toward peace in negotiation to stick goals is much better. already told. the. iranians looked on as someone who could protect them cut down at the height of his popularity by a u.s. strike his death marks the lowest point in iran u.s. relations in decades. well get more now from al-jazeera has some a binge of it he's live in baghdad this summer so the money he was
9:07 pm
a divisive figure in iraq to say the least was the reaction been they're following his assassination. well yes he was a divisive figure but what is killing has done it has unified the political leaders across the political spectrum here and to iraq are you not amiss in their condemnations unanimous in saying this is a flag and violation of iraq's sovereignty you none of us in saying that this killing has made not just iraq but the region much less safer in the last few minutes of we've heard from the iraqi prime minister's office replacing the deputy of deputy leader rather of popular mobilization forces of a matty and wonders who was with us until the money in that vehicle when they were killed. the leader of by their organization is going to be replacing the us so it has been. a roller coaster ride for iraqis not just this killing but if
9:08 pm
you go back a few weeks a few months rather where iraqis have come out in force calling for a greater reform calling for an end to it meaning influence calling for more jobs and more security those protesters have forced the iraqi government out there is an interim government in place waiting for a permanent government and this government is now will be facing one of its biggest challenges. since the u.s. led invasion where it will have to balance its relationship between the united states between its ally iran and just this discord at home now there is a bloc which is pro iran and iran into how do you square in bout that for instance very solid divisions from earlier there were celebrations of course insulin money's coming because protesters have been holding him responsible for the brutal crackdown by iraqi security forces off on these protesters and yet you see morning
9:09 pm
and a large procession that will be carried out this morning by all accounts a very harsh to xabi the popular mobilization forces and it's militias will be. convening in bout the taking of the funeral procession from one of the most iconic bridges here in baghdad so the country remains divided between this and it is not just this country. he was one of those figures who was the architect of iran's international influence across the middle east and that division you can see in syria in lebanon and elsewhere as well as you saw pictures from syria where people were actually celebrating the death of christ in chile money in opposition held parts whereas we've heard from the president of bashar al assad of syria saying that his services for the syrian army will not be forgotten ok some avenge of aids live in baghdad thank you. now the reaction in the u.s. to the assassination of the iranian general can be split star in parts isn't lines
9:10 pm
republicans appraise president trump's actions but democrats have expressed concern about iran's reaction mike hanna is in washington d.c. with more. u.s. troops reinforcements continue to arrive in the middle east and the state department has issued a travel advisory urging all american civilians to immediately be iraq this phase deployment of some 750 soldiers from the 82nd airborne rapid reaction division was initially treated after the demonstrations at the u.s. embassy in baghdad but pentagon officials indicate this number is likely to increase in coming days. president trump remains on for cation in florida but in the early morning tweeted this comment iran never won a war but never lost a negotiation the secretary of state insisted the action was in reaction to a clear and present danger and we want the world to understand that there was in
9:11 pm
fact an imminent attack taking place the american people should know that this was an intelligent telegin space and the drove this political reaction in the u.s. is split on partisan lines republicans welcoming the attack democrats expressing deep concern about the consequences republican lindsey graham justified the attack on twitter this action by president trump and our military was in direct response to a reign you know aggression orchestrated by general sort of money and his proxies but this response from a senator across the aisle this is the equivalent of the iranians assassinating the u.s. secretary of defense if the iranians were to assassinate the u.s. secretary of defense we would consider that an act of war and we would respond disproportionately. i think we need to expect that the iranians will also act disproportionately former national security adviser john bolton has also tweeted his congratulations ironically he was fired by president trump following his
9:12 pm
continued calls for regime change in iran just one of a number of points of disagreement the killing of a senior military figure in a sovereign state raises questions about whether the u.s. has violated international law and whether the president has the right to sideline congress in deciding to strike house speaker nancy pelosi has released a statement pointing out that president trump did not inform congress of the attack and his decision to bypass congress raises serious constitutional questions and will be hotly debated in coming days on a renewal of months of argument about the nature and extent of executive powers mike hanna al-jazeera washington. well as cross-eyed alan fischer his life is at the pentagon allan what have the pentagon been saying. well apart from the statement that we go it just enough to risk confirmation of the attack in iraq has
9:13 pm
been nothing you can see the empty podium behind me we do know from the pentagon that they are sending an additional 3000 troops to the middle east region they say that's part of the ongoing evaluation of the threat there you remember that there is a number of troops sent just a few days ago of the 82nd airborne they were there to provide support for the american embassy in iraq people there in speculating was that part of the whole process then although they were saying they were going just to add a bit of extra muscle was this because the planning for this was already in the works and it seems likely that that was the case if you start to join the dots because lindsey graham who is a republican senator big ally of donald trump he says he was told about the planning for the operation when he was in florida i know he was in florida according to the white house pool on monday and tuesday playing golf with president donald trump there are others though her saying look congress wasn't informed about
9:14 pm
this in the proper way nancy pelosi has said that she certainly didn't hear anything about it mitch mcconnell spokesman he is the leader of the republicans in the senate said that he had no comment to make on whether or not a he was informed and so there's concern that the group of 8 which are the 8 senior figures on both sides of the aisle also involved in the intelligence and defense committees were not formally informed of this attack that was going ahead there's the question as well of but whether or not a congress should have authorized the use of military force. it's an acronym you will hear a lot over the next few days and here's another big question is well might pompey or the secretary of state says we took the action because of the intelligence that we had gathered and no american. in the region are safer yet his own state department is sending out an advisory warning americans to leave iraq as soon as
9:15 pm
possible there are those again on both sides of the aisle who will want to see that intelligence that might not be made public that's understandable it could've been gathered by covert means it could have been gathered through intelligence agencies no one wants to show their hand in that sort of situation but they will be seeing what is this intelligence why was it imperative that we took that attack no why did we make that decision and here's another concern that many people have not just on the hill but elsewhere in washington too it's that donald trump is very much a reactive president something happens he reacts although he said and he said just a couple of days ago mara lago he wants peace with iran and iran should want peace as well his natural instinct is not to be provoked he doesn't want to. continue wars in the middle east he's trying to pull troops out of afghanistan he doesn't want to fight wars far away he campaigned on that the last time around your campaign and again this time around but there are those asking the question are
9:16 pm
there any chess players in this administration yes you can make one move but have you thought of the next move and the move after that and the next 10 moves are you looking at the whole board here you may have taken away one of the bishops but are you leaving the rest of your field exposed that's part of the reason why the pentagon are moving 3000 people in to the middle east it's part of their preparation for what they know will be a reaction from iran we just don't know what that reaction is going to be so there's concern in washington too that although this action was planned over the last few days what happens next has not been greatly planned there as we've seen with many adventures from the americans in the middle east in the past that has been a feeling ok allan fair share and i thank you very much let's head across the highly chill castro she's on capitol hill for as. we've been hearing there some of the.
9:17 pm
various reactions from allen that congress isn't session they want they've been saying. well what we've seen just in the last hour from the senate floor was a clear reflection of the divide between parties in response to this u.s. military strike we heard the leaders of both parties addressing the floor they the congress is just returning to their work after several weeks off for the end of your holidays and chuck schumer the top democrat in the senate he said that the president acted without authority when he you know laterally approved this military strike and schumer warned that this is getting potentially the u.s. into another endless war using the same phrase that trump has been campaigning on saying that he doesn't want the u.s. to be in these analysts wars and democrats warning that that may be what is to come and then of course we hear the exact opposite side of the coin coming from
9:18 pm
republicans the top republican in the senate mitch mcconnell saying that soleimani was a terrorist mastermind he called him an evil man and of course earlier in the day secretary of state my pompei you saying on u.s. media that americans in the region are safer now after demise and as allen pointed out he said that just hours after his own state department urged u.s. citizens in the region to get out because of the higher security risk now no one in washington is directly accusing the president of all teary or motives in authorizing the strike however you look at the timing there are murmurs there is concerns you know today with the day that the senate was supposed to start talking about trump's upcoming impeachment trial instead they'll be talking about the response to this military strike and to what ever fallout that it may bring ok.
9:19 pm
thank you let's get more on this from marwan bashara these old to see. senior political analyst and joins me now in the studio marwan at a furious reaction in the middle east us who are hearing from some a pinch of aids division in america is this it 7 points because the u.s. and iran have been been up against each other for a while now is this the the straw that breaks the camel's back absolutely but you know i'm not sure if there's a camel sure there's a straw but clearly as you were saying and i think that's important thing and i think a lot of our viewers even our guests tend to forget the reality of the middle east we've lived in you know it all reminds me of this way the proverb it i've been using only recently when elephants fight it's the grass that gets crushed but when elephants play it's the grass that that's crushed and so even when u.s.
9:20 pm
and iran were getting together and were just playing fine under the obama administration president rouhani look at syria what happened to syria what happened to iraq what happened to yemen so even in the good times. between the u.s. and iran things were going really terribly bad in also suppresses in the middle east in the arab world in iraq in yemen in syria and other places so those who are talking about apocalyptic scenarios in the region should be reminded that syria and iraq and yemen were not exactly living the best of times the last several years because of the proxy wars between iran and the united states and i think it's those proxy wars that will continue unabated for the next decade to come so we're looking now for the next reaction from the next step we've been hearing fierce rhetoric from the iranian side the u.s. have been saying that this is preemptive action that they took because to save
9:21 pm
american lives at war you'd expect since happen next what do you think is going to it's a player to be honest hal i'm very curious about the message that was apparently sent by the united states to iran through the swiss emissaries and i'm because i have the sense that although this was seen as a declaration of war by iran that trump has no intention to fight another war in the middle east. as we've heard from our correspondents present from campaigned and presided over the idea that. america does not need another iraq war in the middle east if anything america needs to be retrenching needs to be redeploying from the hot spots in the middle east because it's neither neither oriel or our allies that our national pride that will stop trump from pulling out and places like syria what everyone has been saying no no no you must stay and he said i'm going to kill baghdad the i'm going the question is now is tom saying in his mind i've killed
9:22 pm
kasumi so maybe i should pull out of iraq because i think that's the next interesting step from the united states from a president who's always wanted to say that as a businessman i'm not going to throw good money after bad in iraq and why we spend trillions of dollars maybe it is time to get out of iraq because why are we there if we're going to continue to bleed blood and treasure in a country that it seems is not going to be on our side any time soon ok leave it there thank you very much indeed for your thoughts and your analysis no cousin saw the money played a key role in events across the middle east designing tehran's policies and defending its interests in places like lebanon iraq and syria his death has provoked a strong reaction in iran though and especially in his birthplace of kirmani that's where his body will be buries but only after a prayer service performed by iran's supreme leader and a funeral in tehran on sunday bari explains the significance of qassam soleimani.
9:23 pm
in his hometown of care man in central iran thousands gathered to say goodbye to a man many saw as more than just the head of iran's elite force. major general essential imani came into the role more than 20 years ago and had been one of the masterminds of iran's military strategy in the region. whatever anyone else thought about so the money he was revered and admired by many in the islamic republic that's because the folks in. you know i heard it on the radio in the taxi this morning i was waiting for the names of those killed when i heard general salim money's name i said oh god he was martyred on with us the former. because. unfortunately it's clear that wherever the u.s. enters it is after domination for its own interests general saloon money was one who stood up gravely especially fighting i saw it was
9:24 pm
a moral issue to do with. he was a key figure 100 percent they were targeting him they knew where he was surely a wrong won't leave it on and sort of will do something silly money rarely spoken public but gave this interview in october saying iran's revolutionary guard had expanded what he called islamic resistance to half a 1000000 square kilometers connecting iran through iraq and syria to lebanon the courts force runs iran's foreign military and clandestine operations so they money delegated iranian diplomats to meet u.s. officials after the $911.00 attacks and they brutally worked together against the taliban but that relationship didn't last long. the u.s. and iran's pirate is aligned once again in the fight against eisel but then evolved beyond the battlefield. in april last year the u.s. designated iran's islamic revolutionary guards corps as a terrorist organization but solomon he had the full support of his government the supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei awarded him iran's highest military honor
9:25 pm
last year same so the money had survived many attempts on his life both here in iran and abroad and now his death will likely embolden the groups who support it as iranians mark 3 days of national mourning many here are looking to see what will happen next. al-jazeera tamarod. well the tank in baghdad is a dramatic escalation of the crisis between the u.s. and iran let's take a quick look at the timeline over vence last friday a rocket attack struck an iraqi military base killing an american contractor the u.s. blamed the pro iranian group the hezbollah brigades 2 days later the u.s. launched air strikes against the group's military outposts in iraq and syria killing 27 fighters iran backed paramilitary groups in iraq and stormed the american embassy compound in baghdad leading to a 48 hour siege douglas ollivant is
9:26 pm
a senior fellow for the think tank new america he previously served as a u.s. national security council director for iraq and joins us now from washington d.c. good to have you with us on the program 1st of all what sort of reaction are you expecting from iran and what is the u.s. likely preparing for because there will be a reaction it's just unclear at this stage what form it will take. that's right it's unclear what form they might choose to take they have a laundry list of options so we know where their proxies are they know they could in theory strike israel from lebanon they could attack us assets inside iraq they could decide to do something in the gulf they could attack saudi aramco they could use their cyber weapons they have a broader array of possible responses and we just don't know yet what their decision calculus is as to how they might respond the pensacola is sending an additional $3000.00 troops or so do you think that's enough
9:27 pm
i don't think this is the situation where troops are going to called for one of those troops going to go do you know the u.s. embassy is now pretty secure the iraqi counterterrorism forces are outside their extra forces inside. so what might those assets do if you want to go put another couple 100 people on each of the u.s. bases you could do that but any strike would likely be or rockets or something akin to that and putting extra people on the bases just frankly extra people who could be killed on the base so no i would i think those sources will stay there they'll be a show of resolve but i don't think we'll see a significant increase in u.s. presence inside iraq well that's very much a case of wait and see which is it is fairly unsettling not least for countries like lebanon and iraq are very worried that this is going to affect them how
9:28 pm
do you think these assassinations are going to impact the situation in the region particularly in iraq. i mean you're going to hate this answer but they could the answer is it's going to complicate it now whether that moves things in a positive direction from the perspective of united states interests or western interests or even the interest of the local populations or whether it makes them worse i'm afraid we're just in a totally ambiguous situation and we just don't know what way it's going to go i could craft a story for you about how the assassination of still the money eventually resolves interests and makes the region more peaceful i could also tell us a story about how this is the beginning of a long period of chaos it's just really unclear at this moment which way that needle might point and they don't know trump tweet seeds in the aftermath of that action taken in baghdad's and he didn't have
9:29 pm
a sense that he was willing to it was high time. were willing to do it he was why do you think so trump decided to take this action when previous u.s. presidents who were given the option of taking rights customs of the money declined to do so. well i'm not going to try to get inside the president's head but we do have the answer face value what the secretary of state mr pompei o. is said is that there were more imminent plans that threatened u.s. soldiers and diplomats and other assets in the region so the surface answer we're being given is that this was a preventative strike and that it was necessary to remove saddam monny in order to prevent future attacks hopefully we'll have more information on that in the coming days and do you think that it's certainly we're seeing it's
9:30 pm
a fight. a lot of the democrats very very worried about this say that not enough thought says go on and see the consequences over decision all of that magnets do you think this is politicking or do you think there is a genuine a genuine cause for concern that the u.s. just isn't aware of the impact that taking out someone like us so the money here is in effect a branch of the gulf of ants what impact that will have well it's politics so i think we're seeing both yes some of the people who are criticizing this decision probably couldn't pick iran out of a map so you know they're for them this is purely politicking but there are very very experienced politicians and diplomats who are expressing real concerns about the possible implications we have definitely turned the region over so to speak we've really removed a
9:31 pm
a baseline and how everything settles once the dust settles on what does the region look like after that is just deeply unknown ok lots of uncertain say ahead but for now douglas ollivant great to get your thoughts thank you so much for sharing your analysis on al-jazeera. for more on the escalation in tensions between the u.s. and iran coming up also still to come $100.00 babies in one month be sick of the crap the reasons behind the usually high child mortality rate at a public hospital in india. and in sports we're on board with the dr robi champion as if it's a different historical the 1st time in the middle east. hello
9:32 pm
there plenty weather across northern sections of the middle east we have a system through the eastern end of the mad and that is bring with us and strong gusty winds some rain showers and then up into turkey we are seeing quite a lot of snow beginning to accumulate again over the next couple of days but really widespread rain child through syria iraq across into these more central and western areas of iran and as we go into sunday that rain will sing south was working its way through the arabian gulf so some showers across into bahrain across into cattle and also some showers into all central areas of a saudi arabia and you can see also we've got more rain pushing through iran and again of course turning to snow as we head across into afghanistan so northern areas of africa we could against a few more showers libya on into egypt but they're becoming lighter as we go through the weekend what we have got though is them pretty strong winds through the interior so for example need jaron child we've got some strong winds that are so we could see some pretty big dust storms over the next couple of days mostly dry into
9:33 pm
south africa still more rain across into more central and northern areas of madagascar and also quite a spread of showers and thunderstorms here tending to push down into both want to as we head over into sunday be staying very warm and to johannesburg maybe the chance of a scattered thunderstorm. now all jews or. what ever your. violence is power. falls is the political wild card that ultimately shapes world order the structure that is defended at all cost. the edge with the support of the people fall through the crushing of their will. people in

airstrike killed kassam somani at baghdad airports ayatollah ali khamenei has said the attack would double the town's resolve to resist the united states. yes president donald trump has tweeted that kassam salomone was responsible for the tatts of millions of people and section of state might pump a 0 told us media the strike was justified and legal. and lebanon has been as a leader has fights punish those behind someone on his assassination but his foreign ministry has also condemned the killing and asked for the country to be spared any repercussions. as are the prime minister binyamin netanyahu has cut short his trip to greece this is what he had to say from athens just as israel has the right of self-defense the united states is exactly the same right cousin suliman is responsible for the deaths of american citizens and many other innocent people he was planning more such attacks president wrote deserves all the credit
9:36 pm
for acting swiftly forcefully decisively israel stands with the united states in its just struggle force peace security and so the firms thank you. my cousin solomonic played a pivotal role in coordinating iran's military operations across the middle east at times his aims quins coincided with those of the us such as defeat an eyesore in iraq and syria to iran has arms and trained iraqi shia militia groups collectively known as the popular mobilization forces their supporters were behind the recent siege of the us embassy in baghdad in syria iranian forces have backed president bashar al assad helping him hold on to power to iran has also been accused of providing police missiles to hooty rebels in yemen the conflict has proved expensive and damaging to saudi arabia iran's main rival in the region and iran's the main military and political supporter of his ball or lebanon's most powerful
9:37 pm
group well rami khouri is a journalism professor at the american university of beirut see chance and snow from the lebanese capital kids have you with us on the program sir we're hearing a lot of concern being aired especially from the region what's this action could lead to do you think we're heading for an armed conflict in the middle east. i think we're going to see more of what we've seen for the last 510 years or so which is continued for tat actions between the united states iran israel the various armed groups has been. popular mobilization forces and others who is in yemen and or and this number the number of these protagonists who are hitting each other back and forth has increased and the level of the targets has risen and what we've seen only in the last couple of months as us is
9:38 pm
a severe escalation of the level of the targets that have been hit by both the united states and iran and iran's allies across the region shipping tanker the oil tankers pipelines ship facilities and then the american embassy so. the man is so we're going to just see more of this this is this is a low intensity long running war this is not just a sudden flare up that you know people were talking 3 or 4 months ago that oh there's going to be war there's going to be war and there have been many wars. in the region but there's i don't think there's going to be an american iranian war but there is going to be a continuation of a long running low intensity battle where individual targets are picked out and the incremental increase in the status of those targets is what we should be
9:39 pm
focused on right now what this really tells us is where the mediators in the world who can step in and find that middle ground politically that can replace constant warfare with some kind of negotiated agreement which of course we had with iran in the western powers. a few years ago and the americans unilaterally broke a wealthy american said didn't want to be part of that negotiates its solution what next do you do you think the of indians will say time to double trump after this. well the iranians of always said they were going to sit down with trump and trump has always said he's willing to sit down with the iranians but none of them are really working very hard to make that happen they're very much catering to their domestic audiences and both cases and this is what political leaders do in every country so there's nothing nothing unusual about the. role of the israelis
9:40 pm
and this is very important and we need to look at how the israelis have pushed consistently not just the americans but in recent years the the immoralities and the saudis and others of the world to to write least raise their vocally raise their rhetoric and confrontation with iran but we're just i think we're going to just see more and more of this until it gets to a point where it cannot be sustained either economically or of the damages get so great and the political damage domestically i think is the weak point for all of the main actors in this whether it's the united states or israel or iran we saw already the saudis and the iraqis in the last 4 months slowly pulled back from their reckless adventures and the region and yemen and the siege of qatar and other things and the rhetoric against iran and they're very slowly started to reconfigure
9:41 pm
the diplomatic process so that's a good sign and i think that's what we need to really keep looking at how the domestic position of the main actors a iran united states and israel changes if they suffer too much being politicians they will change their policies in order to maintain their incumbency but it is if that realistically i know sharon because when a country goes to war and they have a strong lead there as an incumbent even heading into an election as is the case in israel with prime minister binyamin netanyahu that's. it's up their base and netanyahu and the the u.s. they do not like the those who are in charge of iran and they're seeking regime change and the iranians certainly aren't going to just stand by because the israelis and the americans running their country. yeah you can have a short term. increase and you're popular support at home whoever you are in
9:42 pm
whichever country if you carry out some dramatic action like warfare or assassinations or attacks of this nature sure that happens in the short term but in the long term these are not sustainable policies the americans have spent. about 7 trillion dollars it's been calculated now on the wars in afghanistan and iraq and across the middle east the war on terror and other related actions and trump came into office saying he wants to pull out of the middle east because these have not have not succeeded this have been failure so at some point you will get countries that will change their policies if they can do it in a dignified way and that's what happened with the nuclear agreement and the and in the sanctions agreement for years 34 years ago and it succeeded because everybody self interest was taken into consideration and therefore it succeeded the real

problem at the core of this this again is why that agreement under obama was so historically important the real problem is that the trump people have no idea how the political calculus of a country like iran or a group like hezbollah or other people popular mobilization forces that are all working together they have no idea how these people operate and they calculate iran's reaction like they would calculate calculate the reaction of the defensive backs of of the los angeles rams in a football game or something like that they don't understand the culture of resistance they don't understand the culture of national identity the fusion between religion and politics and nationalism in some countries like iran and the some realities in the middle east bay. they're not always good realities many
9:44 pm
people including myself criticize many things that the iranians have done but these are the realities and the americans only can respond by sending more troops as they're doing now or take more dramatic action so i think that's the core problem the romulans are willing to play ball the americans say they are willing to negotiate somebody has to actually call their bluff and get them back to the sharing table ok joining us from beirut thank you very much indeed. now the u.s. actually general antonio good terrorist cells condemned the u.s. attack saying the world can also forwards another war in the gulf it's most cats are james bays is at the united nations in new york james we have that reaction there from the u.n. secretary general what else has been happening over at u.n. headquarters. what a statement from the secretary general i can tell you not everyone is happy with

that statement agnes kalamata who is the special rapporteur for extra judicial killings that's an independent expert on this subject appointed by the un human rights council she said there's no more pressing time for the un its leadership to step up the now but the statement does not bode well and she addresses the 2nd part of her comments to the secretary general you have the legal tools and the platform please use them so that's a statement from the independent expert that the un human rights council has who looks into these sort of things separately from that the main body on peace and security the u.n. security council has been meeting their meeting was actually on the situation in syria a closed door meeting but i'm told in the margins of the meeting what many were discussing was the attack in baghdad a number of ambassadors spoke to us about it the chinese ambassador restated his
