global conversation on out is iraq. pull the number 2 stories from asia in the pacific on al-jazeera. al-jazeera. hello i'm adrian figure and this is the live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes. iran appears to be standing down donald trump seeks to dial down tension after iranian strikes on an iraqi air base hosting u.s. forces the u.s. president says he wants world powers to negotiate a new nuclear deal. iran's president says the real revenge for the assassination of its top general will be to push america out of the region. a ukrainian airliner

9:02 pm
custom sort of money at a u.s. attack last friday speaking a short while ago trump said he'll be imposing new sanctions on tehran until it changes its behavior. we suffered no casualties all of our soldiers are safe and only minimal damage was sustained and our military bases are great american forces are prepared for anything iran appears to be standing down which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world no american or iraqi lives were lost because of the precautions taken the dispersal of forces and an early warning system that worked very well early on iran's president hassan rouhani said the real revenge for the assassination of sum of money would be kicking the u.s.
9:03 pm
out of the region that says soleimani as these him are all they cast off the hand of dia's soleimani and you saw his revered hand in his body in videos and pictures the revenge for this is to force america out of this region the real revenge of the ultimate response by regional nations as we america is expelled from this region and its head of aggression its counsel for eva. we have a team of correspondents covering the latest developments baria standing by with the latest from ron will also be speaking with a sullivan java to sit in iraq's capital baghdad jona home will be explaining what trump statement could mean for other world powers but 1st let's go live to washington d.c. our white house correspondent kimberly how could is that complete what are we to make of the president's speech. oh i think we sort of reverberate here in the united states and there is a lot of disappointment with the president's speech because it was missing a couple of key components namely number one what the strategy is of the united
9:04 pm
states moving forward there has been a lot of questioning coming from the american public in recent days and also members of congress about the administration's strategy and what next steps would be given the fact that the president's own twitter feed in his public statements was full of harsh rhetoric promising to strike back against iran if it attack u.s. interests without hesitation but it appears hesitation is exactly what this u.s. president is doing right now the other thing absent from the speech the evidence that many americans were looking for for why the united states decided to kill general solomonic so there is certainly been a lot of explanation in recent days but there were not the concrete tangibles that many americans were looking for instead there were even some surprises in the speech namely the one where the u.s. president suggested that it was time for nato organization that the president once called obsolete to now become more involved in middle eastern affairs
9:05 pm
today i am going to ask nato to become much more involved in the middle east process. it's not clear if the u.s. president has been consulting extensively with european allies he did however say that it was important for the u.k. germany france russia and china to break away from the nuclear agreement that the united states pulled out of the g c p a way back in 2015 and now saying that decision to do so so there is a lot of confusion about the president's speech and imagine that there will be some tough questions for the administration officials that will be briefing members of congress on capitol hill in the coming hours a white house correspondent kelly how it could live in washington let's go to london i'm serious john hall is that the president says he wants nato to become more involved in the middle east process we heard him saying it just
9:06 pm
a few moments ago to his nato allies know anything about this. well for probably not not yet they would have heard it as we heard it one imagines that seems to be don't trump style i think we're probably talking here about nato taking on more of the effort in iraq with forces based on the ground in iraq in the fight against eisel the language being used pretty vague of course talking about the middle east the focus of operations at the moment is in those. in training iraqi forces in the fight against eisel nato is involved with fairly small numbers on the ground at present announcing following the events of last friday that it was scaling back ending essentially its activities temporarily remember donald trump has a fairly checkered history with nato ones calling it obsolete now apparently supporting it but frequently railing against its members calling them to take on
9:07 pm
a greater share of the burden a greater share of the cost for their own defense on the collective coffers of nato now i think he will see nato alongside european powers as having disappointed the administration my compo the secretary of state said as much in failing to full throated lee support the actions last week against custom solid money. an opportunity i think in this address to give everyone a sort of dressing down here a bit of naming and shaming and in nato as case presumably as i said to take up some of the burden in iraq opening the door for the u.s. possibly to draw down its forces there something we know donald trump is keen to do and something of course that we also know that the iraqi parliament at least is keen for him to do so many thanks indeed let's go live now to what ron out zero's dorsett barry is there 'd iran appears to be standing down said president from.
9:08 pm
well i think there it's. hard to imagine where the u.s. president would get that impression from ever. nothing we've seen so far over the past not only a few days but just today alone would indicate otherwise we've heard from iran's supreme leader the commander in chief of the country's armed forces who had some very strong words for the u.s. government and the u.s. president saying that the attack that was launched on the u.s. airbase in iraq was just a slap in the face that they are a real issue their real conflicts will ensue if the u.s. should don't withdraw from the middle east that we also heard the same sentiments from iran's president as well as the foreign minister along with the country's defense minister the other point that we need to make is that fact that the u.s. president seemed to believe that the $150000000000.00 that was given to the rain ians upon the signing of the g.c. remains in 2015 was a gift from the u.s.
9:09 pm
government that is hardly the case the money that the iranians got after the signing of the deal was the iranian fund that had been frozen in the united states since the revolution of 1979 and since the rain students took over the u.s. embassy in tehran and helped $52.00 american citizens hostage for over $444.00 days that was what resulted in the sanctions on iran and the freezing of their assets in the country and that money was released to the iranian government upon the one thing they signed the nuclear deal the other point to make is the fact that the u.s. president said that they are ready to talk they want peace the remains are not likely to believe that statement to be true since their top general one of the most important figures in the country was assassinated in iraq as well as talking peace or offering a sort of all of branch to iran the president said he was implementing quote immediate additional punishing sanctions would be the reaction to that berent.
9:10 pm
act well i think many officials and ordinary iranians are now at a point where they don't believe there's anything left for the u.s. government to sanction the last round that we had was a number of iranian officials foreign minister jobs or if i'm self being on one of those sanctions list in the past few months of obviously the sanctions many of the companies the construction firms the various companies that are affiliated with the revolutionary guards are now under u.s. treasury sanctions there have been sanctions over sanctions over sanctions over the past 18 months since the u.s. withdrew from the nuclear deal and the iranians just so believe there's anything left for the u.s. government to sentients of the statement by the president that they're going to have more crippling sanctions there's really nothing left to sanction the ordinary iranians are at a point where they just find it quite laughable that the u.s.
9:11 pm
believes they have the power more power to actually sentient anything else left for the iranians to. benefit from so the idea that the u.s. government is looking for any kind of dollars with iran is really something that is absolutely dead it here people don't believe that will ever happen again with this administration since the assassination of us and so the money the crowds that we've seen that have come out over the past few days to his funeral services across the country indicate how the rains feel at the moment about the u.s. there are so many thanks didn't exist or such were the live in term run let's go to baghdad. to some of the job the bring us up to date with the latest from the border will be made of those comments about from the u.s. president to nato to become more involved in the middle east process. in the last few minutes we've had response from one of the leading clerics here in. there
9:12 pm
who is the head of one of the largest rocks in parliament and he said that the crisis is over after statements from president trump and the iranian government he says now the iraqi government seems should be focusing its energy on building a new government the new form the formation of a new government which can safeguard iraq's sovereignty in a statement on which has now become the medium of choice for many of these leaders following president from he says that. the fighters of various factions here in iraq which belong to the popular mobilization forces should not be taking military actions he calls on the urgency to expel u.s. troops something that the iraqi government has been insisting upon and he urges that there should be free and fair elections here in iraq so it seems that there is definitely a sigh of relief at least if there is a statement of anything to go by and that is what we were expecting as well from
9:13 pm
political analysts who we spoke to right after the president's speech they said that the iraqis would be seeing this as a welcome move that this does not signal if further escalation of tensions here on iraqi soil because as you remember since friday sasa nation of money and it will match the old one this iraqi government has been saying that the solution is the expulsion of foreign troops in iraq because their mission has changed and also for all sides to exercise restraint and that was the that was the fear that this might and action by the united states than a reaction by iran could spark a chain reaction where no side would be able to contain it and so far it appears to be the case most of the people here in iraq are seeing the u.s. president's speech of not signaling any further action of involving nato partners as a welcome move which would be helpful to words deescalation we haven't heard officially from the iraqi government yet about what they. think of the president's speech but
9:14 pm
you have to remember that the iraqi government took more than 12 hours almost to react to the attacks which happened on its soil is calling it an infringement of its sovereignty summoning the iranian ambassador and saying that iraq does not want to be dragged into a regional conflict some a binge of it that lives in baghdad many thanks asama we have a panel of guests to discuss the latest developments out zero's senior political analyst the xara is with me here in the studio yes been zacchaeus of international attorney have full the chief of communications for mission of iraq to the united nations she'll join us from washington d.c. and also in the u.s. capital steve clemons and it's a lodge at the hill and also host of office who is the boss of light he joins us from washington d.c. steve let's start with you the price of oil dropped immediately following president trump's address to the nation is it all over now by the shouting i don't think it's all over i think i think the you've got
9:15 pm
a moment of relief these 2 nations have come back from the brink and stared into the abyss of how awful this could be and you know i think that given the provocative nature of this fascination of soleimani this president is extremely lucky in some ways that the iranians were so measured to gave both an opportunity for an unlikely deescalation for the moment but lots of things remain and you know depending on what you thought were president trump's real reasons for taking this action when he did whether it was impeachment or whether it was the sense of a real security threat of the moment i think the president will be going through the next set of stages in the impeachment process are to some some degree we're going to see bubbling up problems maybe not to the you know level of a massive war but certainly the iran portfolio is going to continue to get attention from this white house has been. you had a white house correspondent saying that the american public will be confused
9:16 pm
perhaps disappointed with what the president had to say what did you make of it. well i don't know if they'll necessarily be disappointed but i do see that the reconciliatory language that donald trump use was a surprise to a lot of people he was using words like peace harmony prosperity stability he's not used words like this before when addressing the iranian government he brought up isis and extended an olive branch citing to a common enemy. i think as a result this hot war will deescalate but i do agree with what was said earlier which is the cold war will not these proxy wars will continue and iran's malign activity will continue by a proxy using places like iraq iran syria yemen. lebanon as a battleground our senior political analyst moment bashar is with me in the studio iran appears to be standing down the president said is this this crisis if you can
9:17 pm
call it that is. that he got out of it certainly yes i mean in terms of it's been dial down. the escalated to some level whatever the cold war that we lived over the last 40 years seem to be heating up the last few days the last 4 days clearly that's heating up with the cold war between the wrong one could be now back to what it was before december 29 my guess is. is that in the end of the day president from acted right after that attack on the u.s. embassy in baghdad for him a political survivor as it were a political animal as it were quote unquote he he understood that it was the takeover of the american embassy to her on that led to the downfall of president carter and it did damage the. kind of the see if you will of hillary clinton because of the benghazi attack on the bank of the on the american diplomatic.
9:18 pm
assists in benghazi and i think he figured that the assassination of of course some sort of money was an important step to put an end to that kind of iranian escalation for the time being. i think he just told us tonight that the united states has absorbed the attack on the u.s. base in northern iraq and in a far as he's concerned iran has absorbs the assassination of his general cos i'm still a money for it so for the time being in a fight as the american president is going to end this very particular episode is over steve clemons of washington would you agree with that i do i think marwan gets it right because he understands the political sensitivity that trump has to the symbolism of benghazi the symbolism of the iranian hostage crisis and i think that you know part of the actions of the hezbollah group that was attacking the embassy
9:19 pm
and putting that pressure was trying to send that exact signal to the president that they could determine whether they created circumstances that would hang around his neck as he proceeded into the election or not so there was a fundamental political reason that explains the imminence. challenge and we didn't hear the president why he chose that moment he chose it for exactly the reason bar one just said yes and will iran it may be over as far as iran's official sources a concern but what about its its proxies throughout the region would it continue to exact its quote terrible revenge through them. i think that's a great question and i do believe that that will be the case i think like stephen marwan mentioned this proxy war will continue and iran still has a very strong hold on countries like lebanon and iraq the question is what will happen in these places places like iraq which have been a battleground for the iranian government and for the for the u.s.
9:20 pm
government what's next will the u.s. government impose sanctions on iraq as they mentioned earlier if that's the case will that be effective the iraqi people have endured years over 13 years of some of the most brutal comprehensive sanctions in the history of the world and all it did was insulate a very brutal dictators brutality and so the question is if the u.s. is looking for allies in the region if the u.s. is looking for support in places like iran where they actually do have allies there are factions of the iraqi people in the iraqi government who are very pro-u.s. or usa the question is what needs to be done now in order to garner that support. the u.s. has not offered any commitment to iraq or places like lebanon it hasn't provided a strategy militarily diplomatically strategically economically and these places like iraq and lebanon are in very rough neighborhoods so when it comes to iran and
9:21 pm
how to deal with iran in terms of garnering support from our allies president trump and this administration need to provide a clear strategy. now is is there a clear strategy if if the heat has gone out of this latest crisis. to one looking as far as president trump it's 1st america 1st or 2nd everything else can be done in so many ways and i think everything was downed because of pursuing those narrow interests after the attack on the u.s. embassy he is thinking of his reelection is thinking of impeachment he's not really thinking about the future of this region let me tell you something that is very important. what happened over the last 4 days have strengthened and empowered the air tollers into iran it has weakened the the movement for democracy into iran that was boiling over the last 23456 weeks it weakened the democratic movement the
9:22 pm
popular movement in iraq it strengthened the ayatollah as our allies in iraq it also strengthen them in yemen and in lebanon iran ayatollah the iranian regime at this point in time are far stronger than the aware only a few days ago their capacity to maneuver on the nuclear deal their capacity to maneuver with china and russia their capacity to intimidate their immediate neighbors in the gulf all of that has in fact improved the port for you and the capacity to project influence for the iranian regime so in the end of the day the balance sheet of the last few days might be that iran will not attack another u.s. embassy and in time in the near future in the next year but certainly in a surprise the middle east is concerned in a movement for democracy is concerned a major setback no one bashara. steve clemons but he thanks

well again it's good to have you with us adrian fenty good here in doha with the news out from out of syria the headlines u.s. president donald trump says that iran appears to be standing down after a series of s trikes on iraqi military bases hosting u.s. troops he says he'll be imposing new sanctions on iran but also world powers to negotiate a new nuclear deal. earlier iran's president said the real revenge for the assassination of its top commander custom sort of money would be kicking the u.s. out of the region it follows the iranian missile attacks on the bases hosting u.s. troops in iraq. several airlines have canceled half flights to tehran while others have rerouted the aircraft to avoid iranian airspace the u.s. federal aviation authority has banned american airlines from flying in the air space above iraq iran and the gulf of oman it says this a potential for miscalculation or mis identification israel's prime minister has

9:33 pm
u.k. leaves the e.u. of the 31st of january of all the lane says if the deadline is not extended both sides need to prioritize the more divergent there is the more distant the partnership will be. and without an extension of the transition period beyond 2020 you cannot x. expect to agree on every single aspect of our new partnership we will have to prioritize what program and joins us live now in the studio with the morris so i guess she says it's not going to happen the way they want to without an extension boris johnson has always said he's not going to go for an extension where does this leave the 2 sides well it was an interesting meeting today both sides acknowledge that the trade talks as you say can't start yet because neither side has the mandate from the parliament the european parliament or the westminster parliament so what this was described as was setting the scene it was the 1st chance it's the
9:34 pm
1st chance of that they've had a face to face encounter since us live on the land was it was elected back in december 1st chance they've met since the general election and essentially of all the land came to london to listen to the prime minister but also to inject a dose of reality and the prime minister has issued a statement in the last hour describing it as a positive meeting saying that the u.k. wanted a positive new e.u. u.k. partnership based on friendly cooperation we want a broad free trade agreements saying ready to start negotiations on a future partnership and a canada style free trade agreement as soon as possible after january the 31st but the clip that we heard from live on delay and warned that the timescale is very very tight and the idea of negotiating such a comprehensive deal in 11 months is is frankly impossible to contemplate so things are going to have to be prioritized other things may have to be left to be
9:35 pm
sorted out later how is that going to work if the prime minister boris johnson's unwilling in fact refusing point blank to have an extension period after december 2020 all of that will have to be worked out in the coming months and this of course is all about negotiating a deal but the threat of a no deal breaks it is still there precisely. a lot of that will depend on the stance of both sides you've got the prime minister saying he won't extend beyond 2020 will he prioritize them will you hear except that some things can be agreed other things will be have to will have to be left until afterwards or will he say right if we can't agree at all then everything is out and it's a hard hit that is still to be decided the negotiating positions of each side yet to be laid out on the table after january 31st but a useful meeting nonetheless paul brennan thank you. russian president vladimir putin is in turkey where he's met president richard type better than the 2 leaders have called for a cease fire in libya to be implemented by this sunday they issued

a joint statement saying they wanted stability and a normalizing of daily life in tripoli as well as other cities and that is the point troops to support the internationally recognized government in tripoli in their fight against the warlord highly for half that of the russian and turkish foreign minister has also called for an end to hostilities. i want to emphasize the period of the russian and turkish presidents addressing all sides of the conflict in libya to stop calm but actions immediately and to declare a cease fire forbid nights on the genuine its worth. well the statement was issued after the turkish and russian presidents inaugurated a pipeline in istanbul it's known as turks stream and will allow russia to sell more gas to europe bypassing ukraine the turkish russian venture starts in the southern russian town of anapa and runs more than 900 kilometers deep under the black sea to the turkish tan of cure coy 2 pipes can transport

a certain 1500000000 cubic meters of natural gas annually one pipe will deliver half that gas on to southern europe servicing up to 3 percent of the e.u.'s needs russia currently supplies about 40 percent over europe stass the route is important because it helps russia bypass the current route which is through ukraine which now faces losing billions in gas transit fees the countries have been in conflict since 2014 simcoe say glu is in istanbul for us she says the pipeline is one of many areas of cooperation between turkey and russia. the spite of by late troll crisis back in 2015 after turkey shut down their russian fighter jet by its southern border and this project was halted and back in 20172 leaders decided to build this project again and this is the 2nd direct pipeline carrying gas from
