hello i'm maryanne demasi welcome to the news hour live from london coming up in the next 60 minutes libyan warlord honey 5 to hold talks with turkey's regional rival greece ahead of sunday's peace summit in berlin. that. calls for national unity in iran the country supremely the ayatollah ali hum and naive delivers his 1st friday press and then in 8 years. ken starr the lawyer who led the impeachment investigation into bill clinton joins the legal team representing donald trump that his trial. and

a smoke emergency with 4 european cities ranking amongst the most polluted in the world protesters demand their governments take action. and i'm far in a smile have all the day's sport including carlos sands has won the dakar rally the spaniard winning the world's highest profile off road rally for a 3rd time. follow our top story today libyan warlord khalifa haftar is in greece for talks with the prime minister and the foreign minister of greece has criticised its exclusion from a un backed peace conference set to take place on sunday the internationally recognized tripoli government which have to is trying to overthrow recently signed a maritime and military cooperation deal with turkey angering greece prime minister attack as has. threatened to veto any libya agreement at the european union level
12:02 am
because of that maritime deal between turkey and the government in tripoli have to who heads the self declared libyan national army is scheduled to hold 2 days of talks in athens before flying to the sun based peace summit russia and turkey who support opposite sides in the conflict will both be at that conference when it's a good the most important thing now is that after the berlin conference if everything goes as planned and the security council supports the conclusions from the conference if the libyan sides do not repeat their own past mistakes and start adding any additional conditions and blaming each other as of now the relationships between them are very strange they don't even want to be in the same rooms let alone speak or meet each other for more now on those talks taking place in athens with her office. in general have to as meeting with because then there is the foreign minister mr bender has told reporters after. he and general have to
12:03 am
have agreed that among general have to aims at the peace conference to secure a cease fire and security in his country should be the pursuit of the. a blockade against any other reaching the warring sides a departure of foreign mercenaries that played such a large part in this war and also in a no mint of the maritime jurisdiction agreement reached by rival the government in tripoli with turkey last november that is an agreement greece has taken particular objection to because it infringes upon areas in the mediterranean that greece also sees as its maritime jurisdiction belonging to its eastern a.g.n. islands and so it wants that agreement and all that is its main concern in these talks but of course it is aligned with its european union allies and
12:04 am
partners in wanting international law to prevail in libya and an agreement that's acceptable to all sides meanwhile you have to has also contacted russia an effort to gain support from his longtime ally step vasant has the details on that from moscow. the press service of the kremlin has just made public that i have to have send a letter to president putin to reaffirm his willingness to go to moscow again to continue the dialogue the peace talks and he also said mr president my dear friend i wish to express my personal gratitude and appreciation to russia for efforts towards establishing peace and stability in libya and this is all of course very interesting because this latter comes a little over 4 days after have to pretty much embarrass president putin after he left moscow there were peace negotiations going on for more than 7 hours so russia
12:05 am
the prime minister of the u.s. backed government in libya had signed this cease fire agreement and have to ask some time until the morning to think about it and then suddenly in the middle of the night left moscow without any signature so this was seen as a failure of course for moscow and for president putin and this letter now seems to be safe face saving operation to make sure that russia is back in the game or the internationally recognized government in tripoli wants catherine tunisia to attend the berlin peace conference on sunday are puerto montt a good one had has more now from tripoli. foreign ministry in tripoli has sent an official letter to the german embassy in tripoli requesting that both qatar and tunisia be invited for the talks we know that the government of national accord is keen to include both countries to achieve
12:06 am
some kind of balance facing the other delegation supporting the warlords leave or have to do as you know at least 4 countries supporting the warlord khalifa haftar are invited to take part in the berlin talks on sunday including the united arab emirates egypt russia and france so by this move the government here in tripoli is trying to achieve balance it says that tunisia is very important to take part in these talks as tunisia not only as a neighboring country and being impacted and affected by the ongoing crisis in libya but it has been also hosting thousands of libyans if you did and as for qatar the government says that qatar has been all supporting the freedom revolution in libya since 2011 and the government believes that qatar is

a key. player in the peace talks in berlin while in other stories we're following this hour at least one person has been killed 25 others injured in clashes in iraq security forces fired tear gas to break up a crowd of demonstrators trying to breach baghdad's al center grange it's closer to a square where thousands have been camped out for months now demanding political change recent clashes forcing authorities to restrict access to the crossing hundreds of people have been killed since mass protests began in october. well now some news from yemen protesters in the city of thais a calling on the government to do more to end nearly 4 years of conflict a crowd formed in ties city's freedom square demanding an end to fighting southern region is on the front line of yemen's conflict in a struggled with famine and poverty pro iran who see rebels in saudi u.a.e. backed fighters are battling for control of the city iran's supreme

leader says european countries cannot be trusted in negotiations over the 2015 nuclear deal. made the comments during friday pres it's the 1st time he has let the sun into iran in 80 is a setback has more now from the iranian capital. the day's events began with the customary flag and the chants of death to america as thousands of faithful flock to friday prayers to hear this supreme leader ayatollah khomeini speak the last time he did this was in 2012 in the midst of the arab spring now the spiritual and political leader of iran turned its focus to the united states and europe with the europeans having triggered the dispute because of the 2050 nuclear deal and referred to iran to the united nations where you got to be on germany france and the evil government of the u.k. responded to their threat after the u.s. withdrawal from the nuclear deal i said i don't trust them and that they're american servants and clients of these countries will to bring the iranian nation

clinton 22 years ago and celebrity lawyer alan dershowitz who has represented jeffrey epstein o.j. simpson roman polanski and mike tyson the trial will be led by white house counsel parts of polonia and trumps lawyer. the legal process was set in motion in the senate on thursday ok but i was on those following events for us from washington and these new additions to trump's legal team are prominent household names there in the u.s. what's the reaction been. yeah i think there's a lot of people that are looking at this and saying bad boy trump is putting on nothing to chance here he's bringing in the best legal minds that he thinks he has access to because clearly he's taking this very very seriously i mean these are celebrity lawyers that are very well known in washington and really throughout the united states alan dershowitz a long time harvard law school professor considered one of the best legal minds in
12:16 am
the country when it comes to constitutional law interestingly enough he's a democrat that actually a voted for hillary clinton in the last election he says but he's come out very vocal in support of trump saying that in his view this is unconstitutional this legal impeachment against donald trump and then it's being done in in proper ways and that's why he's caught donald trump's attention and also dershowitz has been on t.v. a lot he's a legal analyst here and so he's used to being in the media spotlight and you also of course have kenneth starr who is somewhat being brought out of retirement in the late ninety's as you mentioned he was the special counsel prosecuting then president bill clinton during his impeachment trial in the late ninety's so you've got 2 of the best legal minds in the united states when it comes to the impeachment and constitutional law and these are 2 people that are now going to be defending donald trump so i think what you're getting here is
12:17 am
a sense that donald trump is taking this very very seriously and he wants people who have been doing this before know constitutional law but also to people they very much are used to being in the media spotlight this isn't just a senate trial is it we know the president is up for re-election and this is going to be an important part of the campaign. it most definitely is this is going to be a very critical moment in the campaign because this is the 1st time we've ever had an impeachment in the senate it's only the 2nd time in history an impeachment is gone of the senate but this time what makes it so critical and so important and so different like nothing we've ever seen before is because it's happening in an election year the key number here is 20 the jury in this trial is going to be the 100 u.s. senators that will ultimately decide this trial the key number 20 because in order for trump to be convicted and taken out of office there's need to be 2 thirds of
12:18 am
the senators of that vote to convict him right now there are 53 republicans in the senate 45 democrats so you do some quick math that would mean that 20 republicans need to switch basically and vote to to convict trump in order for him to be taken out of office it looks unlikely at this point but it's basically down to a numbers game 20 is the key number that's the number of republicans that would need to vote to convict trump in order to for him to be removed from office now a big week coming up thank you very much. in washington a caravan of almost 3000 people is heading north through guatemala toward the mexican border with the aim of reaching the united states most people are escaping extreme poverty and gang violence in honduras but it's not likely they'll ever get the chance to step on u.s. soil as john home and now reports from guatemala city. a caravan of
12:19 am
more than 2700 home brewed and hoping to get to the u.s. . it's one of several that have set out from honduras since 2018 carrying many seeking to escape violence in extreme poverty i was among also men where i meet is a coffee grower is traveling with his youngest son he says they've no choice and then one day you know i have big debts and one douras that i just can't pay because your work doesn't pay enough to support even yourself. this woman says her nephews were killed over christmas and she's left so they can't get her son to she's too scared to let us film her face only you are. losing a son would hit me more than anything else with already made the decision even if they don't let us pass we can't go back. to now at the cost of then we could run to shelter in guatemala city is safe and have medical care food and a place to sleep even if it is only under the top pulled in that $5.00 of them out
12:20 am
of the center direct through setting up he expected more than a 1000 i asked how they were going to fit me one up they have to know what else are we going to do we have to work miracles here that's the situation we're in those in the caravan would be more miracles heading north mexico under pressure from u.s. president donald trump has said it won't let them through those who do manage to get to the us border find disappointment right at the moment with this caravan upon gordon's trying to get through guatemala and eventually to the united states plane loads of their countrymen are actually being sent back and already got there and asked for asylum to hear what the mother and that tells you how little they chances are of actually being accepted for asylum at the end of this journey miles here knows that he's one of those who've gotten past caravans without success ask him why he's trying again not believe them or not putting one foot on the. we have nothing to lose because in honduras we have nothing you understand our lives are at
12:21 am
risk in honduras as we leave the shelter people are queuing to get in they know their journey is only going to get harder but they're still growing or. john joins us live now so clearly john these migrants are facing really massive pressure from conditions back home in honduras also and guatemala and then from in terms of u.s. policy on immigrants as well just tell us what you've been hearing from some of the migrants that are queuing there behind you. i think these are people that fresh air rights and they just curing to get into the shelter and i think they'll tell you a lot from what we've been hearing from the people that we spoke to last night a lot of people are fleeing for economic reasons things in honduras have been bad economically and they're getting worse a lot of unemployment a lot of people struggling especially those who work in the countryside and then on
12:22 am
the other hand a lot of people that are fleeing boylan's honduras has gangs that suit to be extorted and killing the population and that's been the case for some time in the country you heard the lady that was in the piece that you just saw saying i can't go back i think they're going to kill my son and there's other people that we've been interviewing that don't want to go on camera obviously because they feel that they're in risk even hearing guatemala so there's quite a strong sort of things that are propelling people from out to get out of what the mother but on the other hand mexico has said that these people can see going into the shelter here at the moment probably full of some sort of hope that they might be able to get to the united states saying that it won't let them pass that it won't let them try and see if it will perhaps let them into the country if they want to ask for asylum there but that's it and the united states even more so has the door firmly closed basically saying that even if they arrive in the united states and ask for asylum that asylum request will be outsourced back here to
12:23 am
guatemala so a lot of hope at the moment but most quoted this depressing situation because these people are probably not going to have a little chance of getting and staying in the united states and what's remarkable is that they're willing to make the journey anyway even though to the prospects of bleak for them president comes of putting a lot of pressure on governments in the region to. to crack down on immigrants what happens then to hondurans who are sent back from the u.s. to guatemala. give us sort of the thing that's happening in the same. time is like 3 fronts meeting each other and in a way that shows the sort of the destiny of these people the u.s. is sending planeloads of hondurans to guatemala and what it's saying is that guatemala is a safe country it's calling it a safe country to send these people where they can ask for asylum should mention at the same time that there's a u.s. travel advisory saying for its own citizens to be careful in guatemala because
12:24 am
those gangs they could get extorted the police always capable of opposing the rule of law that's the same country that is sending people from honduras the arrived in the u.s. that's where it's sending them to ask for asylum we actually spoke to a couple of those people today and we said to them if if if if you'd have been told this when you're on your way to the united states you've been told they're just going to send you to guatemala which you still have gone and they said yeah we probably wouldn't believe them we were so desperate in that moment to escape from honduras for financial reasons that we would have gone anyways that snowstorm that's going to stop this migration this caravan of more than 2700 people but their chances again of getting asylum in the us are very unlikely thank you with the latest from guatemala city john holliman thank you john well now to a story in the philippines we've been following tens of thousands of people displaced by an erupting volcano on sunday they are being advised not to return to
12:25 am
their homes despite an apparent lull in its activity vulcanologists say it might take up to 2 weeks to decide whether the tumble is finally safe but to a safe for the moment to fly over the crater and doug was invited to join the 1st helicopter mission. these government officials want a closer look at the rumbling a volcano so they've come to this military air base in the town this province the plan to fly over the crater of the top. and decide how to respond to the threat it continues to pose it's been days since that erupted but the crisis is far from over. we flew over the past city towards our late what we saw there was beyond human comprehension. of what was once a popular tourist destination is now on recognizable. from above we can see

president donald trump has announced his defense team for the upcoming impeachment trial see includes kenneth starr the prosecutor in the failed impeachment of bill clinton 22 years ago and the celebrity lawyer alan dershowitz who has represented jeffrey epstein o.j. simpson roman polanski and mike tyson. who are now on our top story peace efforts in libya we can speak to william laurance a professor of political science and international affairs at the american university in washington so we have this summit taking place in berlin this weekend at a time when. his major preoccupation is consolidating the territory he holds and the push for tripoli and also countering turkey support for the government in tripoli one of the one of the prospects for progress then in ballin. not too good we've had several attempts over the years at such a deal most notably 2015 the libya peace accord there was an attempt out of the
12:33 am
palermo conference in italy out of i will davian the failed moscow negotiations so this is sort of a 5th shot at the libya peace accord and we've even scaled back the expectations because while there was a ceasefire we were talking about peace talks in berlin and now we're talking about an international conference designed to move towards an eventual ceasefire but not with any sort of face to face negotiations have to are is feeling strong and feels he has the upper hand while he did. sort of injure putin's efforts by walking out of the moscow conference he. definitely trying to reassure everyone including moscow that he has the upper hand they've sent a lot of ministry about how angry how angry is russia about. i think it's a dispute among friends they definitely had egg on their face they had brokered
12:34 am
a cease fire with turkey and seemed very much to have the upper hand and not only did have to ask for a delay and then sort of walk out in the middle of the night but he didn't really make any indication going forward that he was ready to make a deal interesting lee he was also outmaneuvered in moscow by the western government which made many promises to moscow which actually was designed in part to make to drive a wedge between have tar and and moscow meanwhile that helps explain why have tears in greece trying to drive a wedge between the european union and the western governments over the maritime we have seen as i said a lot of international intrigue here so we have one so-called sort of ceasefire a peace summit taking place after another meanwhile behind the scenes the picture couldn't be more different could it with this ongoing power play. after his external back have the leverage to push if they choose to exercise it absolutely and most of his backers whether russia or egypt or france
12:35 am
talk to both sides and are being a playing sort of a bit of a double game we're working with both sides here whereas it's only the emirates who played a real role in scuttling the muska negotiation have chosen only one side in this conflict and they've indicated on several occasions they're willing to walk away from have to have something better can can come away but as you know have to has the upper hand in terms of territory in terms of air power and a number of other factors and so it really is complicated but i think the most important thing to say is the main locus of action in the libyan civil war right now is not on the front lines it's in all of these negotiations behind the scenes both internationally and domestically in libya you may know that to get to take over syria have to are bought off some some solid. guards there basically and have them change sidon and then game to the city so it's all about the negotiations and much less about fighting on the front lines i know will be honcho will be speaking
12:36 am
about this again but for now thank you very much professor william laurance taking the time appreciative of leisure. tech companies have been accused of withholding data on how social media and internet use can potentially affect the mental health of children a panel of leading psychiatry swan's there is growing evidence that increased screen use is hurting kids but it can't be properly researched unless that data is released a report published by the college of psychiatrists found that there is evidence of a complex relationship between technology use and depression but it called for urgent funding so that the relationship can be investigated properly it suggested a levy on tech companies could fund independent research as well as training packages the people working with children and young people the report also noted that gaming disorder was now classified internationally as a disease and that clinicians should be aware of the addictive nature of online games so i'm now joined by dr john golden who is involved in compiling this report
12:37 am
and another as well coal technologies and the mental health of children and young people so why don't i start there how much or how little is known about the relationship between screen time or the use of social media and technology and the the mental health of children well good evening 1st of all i should say that screen time is a rather crude measure so when you're on a screen you could be doing your homework you could be looking up research your studies or you could be looking at homeschool content related to so more eating disorders so the screen time per se is a rather unhelpful measure we do know that there is a correlation between the amount of time spent on social media and mental health difficulties we know that there's some correlation over the last 10 years for example people have been using social media more and young people's mental health difficulties a book been on the increase but we don't know that one causes the other. ok but so
12:38 am
what you're saying is that it's the amount of time spent on social media specifically that's where the correlation lies with mental health but you simply don't have the information all the evidence to gauge how strong that the connection is you know we know their associations as i say that over the last 10 years we know there's been an increase in the amount of mental health difficulties in young people and an increase in the amount of social media but we can't say for sure that using social media spending more time online causes mental health difficulties it could be that people are more vulnerable to difficulties or to mental health nature spend more time online so what we need is more data from the social media companies to research this more fully and understand more clearly what is causing what is it realistic for social media to release that data it's not exactly in their interests as well we think the social media company should move the mental health of young people higher up their privacy list seems that at the moment their priorities are
12:39 am
making money increasing advertising revenue increasing the numbers of users which is understandable is their business but the reality is that a lot of young people are suffering through access to social media and online for example if they have an eating disorder there are these algorithms which will push more content related to eating disorders other people who have eating disorders might encourage people to go online and look up eating disorders to be a better anorexic for example and that's the sort of thing that is not helpful we think they should be rather encouraged to access more positive was orses that might support someone within it in the sort of the algorithms don't necessarily work like that at the moment so we do think that there should be an independent regulator witty that can be required to release data from social media companies for the benefit of research into this area what's the likelihood of that happening. well the government published a consultation on a white paper back in the summer of last year and we timed the release of this
12:40 am
report to coincide with them. responding to this consultation so it depends on the government really to what extent they produce a white paper that has a certain amount of teeth as it were in relation to the independent regulator so this independent regulator needs to be able to find social media companies that are not taking down harmful content and we believe they should require social media companies to share their data in an anonymous way i do realize that people might be concerned about privacy and issues like that and we're not suggesting sharing data that can be traced back to any individuals that sharing data on a national and international level so we can understand the problem in more detail i think it's fair to say by the way that there's a kind of double standard in relation to protecting children or in line in offline if there was a home being done to a child offline social services would step in we want to you know look after that child we seem to not manage that so well when it comes to the online world children are suffering various homes when they're online and we don't seem to be doing
