trust me i'm an algorithm on a jersey you really understand the differences this is the cultures across the world so much of what we are using currently that matter to you. the it. republicans under growing pressure to allow john bolton to testify in the u.s. president's impeachment trial after reports he's written a book which undercuts trumps the fence. alone barbara starr you're watching al-jazeera live from london also coming up. the deal of the century is the opportunity of truth but we're not going to possible israel's prime minister praises trump's long delayed middle east peace plan which is due to be unveiled on tuesday. china's prime minister visits rouhani the

epicenter of the krona virus outbreak which is now killed at least $81.00. and the auschwitz survivors warn of rising at the semitism as they mark the 75th anniversary of the death camps liberation. thank you for joining us we begin in the u.s. where president donald trump's impeachment trial has resumed in the senate with republicans under growing pressure to allow witnesses that testify lawyers representing trumper into their 2nd day of arguments in his defense but there's been no mention of the revelations so rounding former national security adviser john bolton which has led to be nude calls for witnesses and more documents to be allowed at the trial in a leaked a draft of his book bolton reportedly claims the president told him to tie a ukrainian military aide to an investigation into his political rival joe biden
10:02 pm
trump has denied these claims. i don't have any of it i have no idea what who leaked it and why but it sure is damning and we ought to find out from the person who made the comments and wrote the book on their oath the eyes of america are upon the republicans in the senate they have been before and now what mr bolton evidently wrote in his book puts puts even more. increases the desire of the american people to have a fair trial with witnesses and documents well tom sawyer ken starr did not address the bolton claims but insists that the trial seem like an election stunt by the democrats courts consider prudential factors and there is a huge potential factor that this trial is occurring and in election year when we the people in

a matter of months will go to the polls. to get more now from i to show castor who is on capitol hill hill for us of proceedings more interesting for what we haven't heard rather than what we actually have heard. it's right the name john bolton heard really going all corners of the u.s. capitol after those revelations came to the fore yesterday except for in the senate chamber john bolton not being a mention thus far in the president's defense team's 2nd day of open statements in which they're trying to claim the president was innocent of these accusations and that the senator should not vote for his removal but of course everyone is still reeling from the reporting in the new york times that according to john bolton's manuscript leaked excerpts of it that john bolton says in august he had a conversation with president trump it was trump said he would not resume this
10:04 pm
security aid to ukraine until ukraine and now and investigations into democrats including joe biden who potentially could be his presidential rival in the upcoming election course that is at the heart of this impeachment case against democrats saying that this was that he withheld this aid with that corrupt motive trying to use it as leverage to get the investigations to help himself politically now democrats have been speaking with the press this morning saying that this is more reason than ever for the senate to continue the trial past this week to push it to a secondary phase in which witnesses likely the very top of the list would be john bolton himself would be subpoenaed to appear here and share that testimony now it's notable that these revelations from bolton is new information that previously has not been has not come to the public's attention before because he did not comply
10:05 pm
with investigators earlier in this impeachment inquiry phase he refused to testify and now he says he is willing to if compelled by the senate president trump has been denying these. accusations from john bolton 1st on twitter and then later speaking with reporters saying he never had such a conversation with bolton and accusing bolton of being a disgruntled former employee who just wishes to sell more books that if you cast it would elicit from capitol hill thank you willis talk more about this with geoffrey kemp a service who is a director of political studies at the niskanen center which is a nonpartisan think tank sir thank you so much for joining us here on the al-jazeera so how how much do you think that these potential john bolton revelations upset the balance or what we thought the direction was of the impeachment trial. i think that bolton's revelations of what appear to be his
10:06 pm
revelations upset the balance of the impeachment probably tremendously as recently as saturday the word from all of the pundits was that the trump administration had succeeded marvelously in its aim of getting all of the senatorial senate republicans to go along with the idea of no witnesses to move quickly to a vote which would have resulted in trump's exoneration as trump would regard it and now all of a sudden these calculations have been blown up and now republican senators are in a very difficult situation because while they would love not to actually have any witnesses called if they ignore what appear to be extremely damaging revelations from john bolton who after all was a 1st hand witness to president trump's words then it will appear that they are in fact participating in what democrats have characterized as a cover up so it's not a good day to actually be a republican senator right now i was going to develop that point because we have seen republicans in the senate and of course the party really i suppose close and i over some of trump's indiscretions to keep the president in office or to keep
10:07 pm
support behind him but you do think in this particular case it would be damaging to the republicans themselves if they were to ignore the john bolton revelations. i think the republican senators are caught between a rock and a hard place with regard to the bolton revelations because on the one hand they certainly don't want to upset the republican base who are fervently loyal to president trump and who believe that the truth is more or less what trump says the truth is on the other hand there are very few senators who represent a state made up only of hard core trump supporters most of them have to appeal to at least some number of moderate republicans and independents in order to win the elections and chances are pretty good that particular among the college educated middle class voters who have sort of trended away from the republicans in recent years that if they are seen to simply ignore 1st hand testimony that is extremely relevant to these proceedings that will cost them electorally and all of these
10:08 pm
senators are as sensitive if not to their legacy in history at least to their reelection prospects so yes it's a difficult moment for republican senators just remind us how many of them would have to change their minds for this to go through and how likely do you think the achievement of that number is. well as of this moment there need to be 4 republican senators who would vote to hear witnesses in these impeachment trials and since the chances are pretty good that there are 3 who have already gone on record saying they'd consider it now the question is will there be a 4th or will those 3 including susan collins of maine and mitt romney of utah and lisa murkowski of alaska actually manage to find more senators willing to give cover to this vote along with all of the democratic senators in order to hear witnesses and i still think the chances of significant numbers of republican senators voting to removed from office is negligible but there certainly is
10:09 pm
pressure building for senators or at least a critical number of them to vote with democrats to hear more witnesses and there may even behind the scenes be talk of republicans going along with the censure motion even if not a vote to remove from office jeff we have a service we'll get more analysis from you a little later for the moment thank you. now meanwhile over at the white house donald trump says he will announce his long delayed middle east peace proposal on tuesday try met with the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu in the oval office to discuss the deal followed by israeli opposition leader benny gantz trump says he believes the palestinians will eventually go along with the plan insisting it's very good for them palestinians have refused to cooperate with the trumpet ministration because of his pro israeli policies it's something they should want they probably won't want it initially but i think in the end they will i think in the end they're going to want it it's very good for them in fact it's overly good to them so we'll see what happens now without them we don't do the deal and that's
10:10 pm
ok they're not living well as you know we cut off aid to palestinians and something i don't like to do but we did that and we think that is a very good chance that they're going to want this. the deal of the century is the opportunity of the century and we're not going to pass it. and we'll talk about that tomorrow for that i repeat i just want to say thank you for everything you've done for the state of israel. you've been the greatest friend that is in the white house and i think tomorrow we can continue to make history. a white house correspondent kimberly halkett joins us live i can really i don't want to be cynical but there's been a lot of talk about this you know sort of deal of the sentry pretty much since when trying to call for this why is it all happening now do you think. well there are a lot of there's a lot of speculation that this is nothing more than a cheap political stunt for both president trump and the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu for president trump of course you just heard the senate trial
10:11 pm
the under way over his impeachment whether he should be removed from office this is a welcome distraction to talk about the so-called deal of the century and for the israeli leader this is a wonderful photo opportunity to try and distract from allegations of corruption just as you're heading into elections the 3rd and you know in this very short time frame that you're trying to get the israeli voters to this time around to give you sort of the deciding victory so there are some concerns that that's all this is now the white house for its part is saying look at because of the israeli elections we're trying to delay this but now look at they're having another one so we're just finally going ahead with this but there's a lot of skepticism in how this is going to be received and we heard from the sound bites there the very confident president trump talking about how he expects that there will be a rejection of this proposal by the palestinians initially because they haven't
10:12 pm
been consulted but eventually they'll like that well yes cynicism is appropriate here given the fact that the israeli policies have been so lopsided or rather the u.s. policies have been so lopsided in favor of israel since the term took office whether it's the moving of the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem whether it's the recognition of israeli sovereignty over the golan heights the cutting off of a you heard the president talking about even the closure of the palestinian liberation organization office here in washington there hasn't been an awful lot of support for the palestinians so you're right there's a lot of cynicism and a lot of skepticism about this deal said to be unveiled on tuesday as you mentioned it's going to be unveiled on pew's they do we have any indication of what might be in it or what might be the surprises in it. we've got a little bit of an indication mostly these have been from leaks this is the one time there hasn't been a lot of leaking in washington which is becoming quite an usual couple of things
10:13 pm
that we have heard about this deal is that for palestinian refugees this could mean no compensation no right of return so that's obviously a problem and also that this deal does not contain a 2 state solution so that is going to be another big sticking point obviously because their concern is once again that this is a deal that or our proposal that we shouldn't call a deal to proposal being put forward by this administration that it really is favoring the israelis despite their claims to the contrary can really help it with the latest on that the white house where we'll find out more on tuesday will check you then carefully thank you. still to come in this half hour of the u.s. military confirms that a planned plane that crashed in afghanistan was one of its aircraft and basketball fans around the world remember the life and legacy of n.b.a. superstar kobe bryant.

the weather in what has been a quiet part of europe which is most of europe is about to change drastically charging in from the west was the baby this lot of cat it stretches a long way west and that's indicating not just clouds but increasing wind and rain so the picture for france germany in particular would be a windy one the next 24 hours a culmination a story of the out drifting east was through austria rain at low levels vienna temps up to about 7 degrees that it has been the case throughout the winter the temps she's in much of you have been above where that should be no moscow 10 to minus 2 this represents his in the warming trend heading in that direction it does mean the weather in the mediterranean has lost the input. to be stormy is that quiet nice change i'm sure of that doesn't apply to northwest and parts of spain where the rain of course will be for time quite heavy so i've given you

al-jazeera. route. 0. welcome back a reminder now of the top stories on al-jazeera donald trump's legal team has begun a 2nd day of arguments in the fence of the president at a senate impeachment trial the republican majority is under renewed pressure to allow witnesses following revelations by former national security adviser john bolton in a leaked copy of this book meanwhile donald trump has met with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu at the white house to discuss his long awaited plan for peace in the middle east the us president says he will reveal his so-called deal of the sentry on tuesday. at the u.s. military has confirmed that

a plane that crashed in afghanistan was one of its aircraft the plane went down in gaza in the province a mountainous area partly controlled by the taliban in a statement the taliban said high ranking u.s. security personnel were on board the plane and that everyone was killed since friday is in kabul and says it's not clear who has control of the plane wreckage. we've been getting a steady flow of information from the province from even the crash site from the areas around it up until a few hours ago and the reason for that might be because what's unique to tollygunge controlled space in afghanistan taliban controlled territory is that they forced cell phone providers to turn off their services after dark 6 pm cell phone services go down so information that we were getting in a steady stream has gone to a slow trickle to almost nothing now when we heard earlier before that happened was that certainly there was video showing a plane crash showing an american air force symbol on the tail section of the

wreckage of that plane crash in gaza a province the taliban also putting out an image of an insignia did read air combat command certainly a u.s. insignia and it really begs the question who controls the wreckage who controls the bodies at that plane earlier in the day we heard from the governor of gaza a province a spokesman saying that afghan forces had arrived at the scene however it seems that the taliban was in some way at the scene at some point who controls the wreckage who controls the space right there right now we actually don't know the answer to that question we're waiting to hear from afghan security forces we're waiting to hear from the americans who we've reached out to here in kabul but we have been hearing from the spokesman for the talabani who's been taking the lead on message and he said that the plane crash was of a cia plane he said those aboard were members of the u.s. intelligence community and just a few hours ago following tweets regarding that plane crash he said that another

helicopter of the afghan government crashed in neighboring picked keep teacup province now we're still waiting for confirmation from the government with regards to that but the taliban certainly taking the lead with regards to messaging on this crash now it must be said that no no time has the taliban claimed responsibility for this crash and they haven't specifically named any of the victims on board the plane. ambassadors of 16 countries in baghdad have condemned the use of live fire against iraqi protesters and called on the government to guarantee credible investigations into the hundreds of deaths since october clashes have resumed in central baghdad with police firing tear gas at anti-government demonstrators it's the 3rd day of a drive by security forces to end months of demonstrations against the ruling elite 16 people have been killed in the last 3 days in the southern city of nasiriyah at least 3 protesters have been killed in the last 24 hours after gunmen set fire to demonstrators tense. lebanon's parliament has passed its 2020 budget as it tries to

10:27 pm
at the staples center in los angeles the home of the basketball team the l.a. lakers where bryant spent the whole of his illustrious 20 year career rob reynolds is there as well obviously everyone gathered there are huge admirers of kobe bryant tell us a little bit about what the atmosphere is like in the mood. it's very somber here this is a place a public laws or just across the street from the staples center where for so many years kobe bryant thrilled so many fans and led his team to so many victories now this is a place of more. let's show you exactly what. little flavor of what's going on here so many people have gathered many of them are wearing the lakers colors of purple and gold people have brought their children they've set up shrines made of.

candles and flowers there's a big video screen above the plaza where kobe bryant's image and the dates of his death and life. birth and death are displayed it's quite a touching scene here many people seem to be engaged in prayer and of course. for los angeles koby was a very important very special person but you know basketball is one of the most popular sports all around the world and its heroes are heroes for kids and people everywhere in on the planet there are so many fans so people are grieving all over the world for this superstar taken away at such a young age of 41. but this certainly is the epicenter of that ali and that rob when it comes to the investigation we are now hearing that heavy fog actually ground that many other aircraft when kobe bryant's private helicopter
10:29 pm
actually took call so what do we know about the investigation. the weather seems to be a very important point in the investigation it is known that the fog was so thick on sunday it's sunny now but it was a completely different story 24 hours ago it's so much so that the los angeles police department which has a whole fleet of helicopters grounded all of its choppers saying it's the conditions were not safe it was simply too. foggy for them to fly and we also have learned that kobe bryant's pilot in the sikorsky 76 the private helicopter. a helicopter which has a good safety record by the way and asked for special permission to fly with special visual flight rules when he spoke to the tower in burbank california it was
10:30 pm
granted that permission and shortly thereafter the aircraft hit a hillside just outside of calabasas so certainly the weather conditions and that instruction from the tower is going to be a very important focus of the investigation as it goes for broke reynolds at the staples center in los angeles thank you. and now a reminder of our top stories president donald trump's impeachment trial has resumed in the senate with republicans under growing pressure to allow witnesses to testify there's been no mention of the revelations surrounding former national security adviser john bolton in a leaked a draft of his book all to reportedly claims the president told him to tie a ukrainian military aide to an investigation into his political rival joe biden
