humankind the as you join me mary huff and as i put up from questions to my special guest and challenge them to some straight talking political debate here on al-jazeera. this is al jazeera. hello i'm barbara sarah this is the al-jazeera news hour live from london thank you for joining us coming up in the next 60 minutes president trump's impeachment trial resumes with republicans under growing pressure for john bolton to testify after reports he has undercut trumps the fence in a new book plus the deal of the century is the opportunity of the century and we're going to close with. israel's prime minister praises trump's middle east peace plan
12:01 am
which is due to be unveiled on tuesday but has already been rejected by the palestinians china's prime minister visits rouhani the epicenter of the corona virus outbreak which has now killed 81 people. and in doha with your sports stories from the basketball world and beyond remember kobe bryant also the n.b.a. star and these 2 killed along with 7 others in a helicopter crash. we begin in the u.s. where president donald trump's impeachment trial has resumed in the senate with republicans on the growing pressure to allow witnesses to testify lawyers representing trumper into their 2nd day of arguments in his defense but there's been no mention of the revelations surrounding former national security adviser john bolton which has led to renewed calls for witnesses and more documents to be allowed at the trial in a leaked
12:02 am
a draft of his book both and reportedly claims the president told them to tie a ukrainian military aide to an investigation into his political rival joe biden trump has the night as these claims i don't have any of it i have no idea what who leaked it and why but it sure is damning. and we are to find out from the person who made the comments and wrote the book under oath the eyes of america are upon the republicans in the senate they have been before and now what mr bolton evidently wrote in his book puts puts even more. increases the desire of the american people to have a fair trial with witnesses and documents trumps lawyer ken starr did not address the bolton claims but insists that the trial seems like an election stunt by the democrats courts consider prevent chill factors and there is
12:03 am
a huge potential factor that this trial is occurring and an election year when we the people in a matter of months will go to the polls. right let's get more now from additional castro's following developments on the capitol hill side of proceeding so far a sort of seem more interesting from what for what we haven't heard rather than what we actually have heard. that's right not only has the president's defense team not brought up john bolton or his allegations thus far but in fact a direct quote from jay sekulow another trump defense attorney he said that not a single witness has been testifying that they heard trump link this security aide to the investigations that he was demanding from ukraine into joe biden well of course if john bolton more to testify going along with the democrats thinking he could be that single witness who according to this manuscript that was leaked in
12:04 am
portions to the new york times it says very clearly that that is exactly what bolton would testify to he said in this manuscript that he had a conversation with president trump in august in which trump said he was going to continue withholding u.s. security aid to ukraine until officials in ukraine and now the investigations into joe biden who of course is a potential presidential rival in this upcoming u.s. election so it's interesting that that has not been addressed yet by the president's defense team there's been some reporting that they might still bring that up later today instead so far they've been defaulting to their more wide argument that trump did nothing wrong in their eyes when he asked for an investigation into joe biden they've also taken on the issue of drums of trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani who democrats say was carrying out
12:05 am
a personal political mission in ukraine that really was risking national security interests will trump attorneys say that giuliani was not on a political mission at all but rather was defending his client the press. from false accusations made by the democrats so what this all boils down to is we have a lot of new evidence that democrats say should be part of the trial record should be taken into consideration by the 100 senators who are deciding whether or not to remove trump from office and by the end of this week we expect those senators to have the opportunity to vote on whether or not they want to call john bolton as well as other witnesses wanted by democrats to have them come forward and share their testimonies now only 4 moderate republicans only 4 republicans are needed in order to side with democrats to make that happen and there are 4 moderates who have indicated that they are open to the idea with several saying today that given this
12:06 am
new bolton information that is even more reason for them to vote yes on opening this trial to more witnesses so it will be up to the senators to decide whether they do want to hear directly from john bolton but trip him self is spoken about the bolton revelations would be say. that's right he has been on twitter and he has spoken directly with reporters saying that he never had this conversation with john bolton he characterizes bolton as a described old former employee who was fired from the white house in september he used to be the president's national security adviser who left under a bad terms according to the president and the president accusing bolton of coming out with this information now publicly in order to bolster his upcoming books sales barbara but as you cast her with the latest from capitol hill heidi for the moment thank you i'm joined by michael isikoff who is the chief investigative correspondent for yahoo news thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera
12:07 am
we're just hearing a correspondent there saying that the president has accused john bolton of being at the scrum the old former employee what do you make of that if you like that john bolton sort of says he's not going to testify willingly but he must have known when he put the details in his manuscript that all of this was going to happen. sure and that's most likely why john bolton just a few weeks ago said he would be willing to testify if subpoenaed he clearly knew he was in an awkward situation with this book where he was laying out details of conversations with the president and that if it came out after a senate trial in which he was not called to testify it was going to look pretty bad let's just remember back at the end of october the house committees asked bolton to voluntarily testify and his lawyer wrote back an e-mail which we
12:08 am
just got a copy of today saying he was not he would not be willing to voluntarily testify in other words bolton was saying through his lawyer take me to court subpoena him at the very same time he's writing a book laying out. his own conversations with the president that are exactly what the house wanted to ask him about so it was going to look pretty bad for bolton to make money on a book in which he dishes on his talks with the president about ukraine dealings when he refused to voluntarily testify before the house you know that said he did the white house has had the manuscript since december 30 and it is now a document that contains evidence that's central to this trial and that's why these the disclosure of the existence of that book manuscript is such
12:09 am
a giant bombshell in this in this senate trial because it has become a giant bombshell and obviously has had a lot of media coverage and this is obviously an election year how bad would it make republican senators look if they didn't call john bolton. well pretty bad and certainly democrats will be hammering them on on that from now through election day i think a lot of replies i don't think i know a lot of republican senators are very nervous right now they're all they also feel blindsided they weren't told about this the white house after all we now know has had this boat manuscript for nearly a month. they had the ability to find out what's in it you would have thought that that would have been 1st and foremost as they were planning their defense find out what evidence is out there find out what could come back to to
12:10 am
haunt us or contradict what we're going to tell the senate and either they didn't do so or they did and concealed it and making things worse michel poor poor the deputy white house counsel gave what many people thought was the most effective presentation on saturday for the president's defense in which he hammered the point which he repeated today that there was no direct testimony linking the withholding of military aid to the president's request for investigations. he chose to even play clips from gordon somnolence saying that's just a presumption he didn't know for sure well guess what we now have a witness john bolton who's mike baird to say exactly that michael forgive me we're running out of time but i just want to ask you one last question do you think that any of this could actually change the outcome of the impeachment trial which because of numbers in the senate has kind of seemed like
12:11 am
a done deal from the start. i can say probably not but if you asked me on friday or even on saturday if i thought there was going to be witnesses at this trial i would have said no the case seemed headed to a quick resolution no witnesses and an acquittal of the president by friday right now that is very much in doubt and while it's clearly unlikely still that you're going to get 20 republicans senators voting for conviction we do have to wait to see what those witnesses will say if they're called to testify and hearing exactly what john bolton has to say about his conversations days with definitely interesting at the say the least michael isikoff chief investigative correspondent for yahoo news thank you. now u.s. president donald trump says meanwhile that he will announce his long delayed middle east peace plan on tuesday israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and the opposition leader benny gantz are in washington to discuss the deal which trump
12:12 am
says he believes the palestinians will eventually go along with but they've rejected it as a plot to liquidate the palestinian calls our white house correspondent kimberly how kit reports. that president alongside israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu u.s. president donald trump announced he is releasing his long awaited middle east peace plan many of the arab nations have agreed to it they like it they think it's great it's a big start trump didn't say which arab nations supposedly liked the plan only that he'll unveil it on tuesday after white house consultations with the israeli leader and his political opponent blue and white chairman benny gantz gats was invited to the white house and met separately with trump amidst an intense election campaign back in israel. but missing from any announcement are the palestinians there are
12:13 am
concerns tribe's plan will deny palestinian refugees the right of return palestinian leaders have declared trust proposal dead on arrival given there's been no consultation this is actually the front of the century the fraud of the century . cancelling everything relating to international law and international. discussions broke down when the us embassy to disputed jerusalem from tel aviv in december 27th team the white house also cut off aid to the palestinians closed the palestine liberation organization offices in washington and recognized israel sovereignty over the golan heights seem to support netanyahu especially as he attempts to win reelection amid corruption allegations 1st. the deal of the century is the opportunity the israeli elections are in march trump denies he's interfering instead trump is touting this plan as an economic opportunity for palestinians.
12:14 am
months ago his son in law jared christian or proposed a peace to prosperity plan to raise $50000000000.00 to improve the lives of palestinians in the west bank and gaza it's something they should want they probably won't want it initially but i think in the end they will i think in the end they're going to want it the unveiling of president trump's middle east peace plan has been delayed repeatedly initially the white house said it was waiting until after the israeli elections given israel is now preparing for its 3rd vote in under 12 months the white house now says it's moving ahead with the plans release can really help at al-jazeera the white house the u.s. military has confirmed that a plane that crashed in afghanistan was one of its aircraft the plane went down in ghastly province a mountainous area partly controlled by the taliban in a statement the taliban said high ranking u.s. security personnel were on board the plane and everyone was killed saying bus
12:15 am
driving is in kabul and says it's not clear who has control of the plane wreckage. we've been getting a steady flow of information from the province from even the crash site from the areas around it up until a few hours ago and the reason for that might be because what's unique to tollygunge controlled space in afghanistan taliban controlled territory is that they forced cell phone providers to turn off their services after dark sort of 6 pm cell phone services go down so information that we were getting in a steady stream has gone to a slow trickle to almost nothing now when we heard earlier before that happened was that certainly there was video showing a plane crash showing an american air force symbol on the tail section of the wreckage of that plane crash in gaza a province the taliban also putting out an image of an insignia did read air combat command certainly a u.s.
12:16 am
insignia and it really begs the question who controls the wreckage who controls the bodies at that plane earlier in the day we heard from the governor of gaza a province a spokesman saying that afghan forces had arrived at the scene however it seems that the taliban was in some way at the scene at some point who controls the wreckage who controls the space right there right now we actually don't know the answer to that question we're waiting to hear from afghan security forces we're waiting to hear from the americans who we've reached out to here in kabul but we have been hearing from the spokesman for the talabani who's been taking the lead on message and he said that the plane crash was of a cia plane he said those aboard were members of the u.s. intelligence community and just a few hours ago following tweets regarding that plane crash he said that another helicopter of the afghan government crashed in neighboring picked keep teacup robyn's now we're still waiting for confirmation from the government with regards to that but the taliban certainly taking the lead with regards to messaging on this
12:17 am
crash now it must be said that no time has the taliban claimed responsibility for this crash and they haven't specifically named any of the victims on board the plane. u.s. secretary of state might pump aoe has expressed outrage in a phone call with iraq's prime minister over the continued attacks on u.s. facilities by armed groups backed by iran this is a day after the u.s. embassy was hit by rockets in the 1st direct strike after months of near misses 3 rockets landed inside the compound located inside the heavily fortified green zone injuring one person one struck near a dining area during meal time the u.s. has called on iraq to ensure its diplomatic facilities are protected. all ambassadors of 16 countries in baghdad have condemned the use of live fire against iraqi protesters and called on the government to guarantee credible investigations into the hundreds of deaths since october clashes have resumed in central baghdad

cases of the virus outside china and almost all had recently been to one or being close contact with someone who had scott heiler reports from beijing. the streets in the capital beijing are almost empty and the most likely stay that way until next monday now that the lunar new year holiday has been extended to help curb the spread of the corona virus more countries and territories have increased restrictions on people from a province or even banned their entry in some cases as the chinese government continues with its plan on containing and treating those who have the virus marketing but i have to keep wearing the same mask if i throw this away no mask then i'm asking the government to sell more masks so i found out that everything sold out to buy food and vegetables now i hope the situation can get better after the chinese new year holiday china's 2nd most powerful government official premier

a 4th case of the disease has been confirmed pharmacies are making huge profits from chinese visitors and as bright explained from so someone chinese visitors are temporarily banned from the country. with facemasks selling out in many mainland chinese cities and in places like neighboring hong kong then pharmacies here in seoul have been doing a roaring trade catering for some of the 10s of thousands of mainland chinese visitors who are reckoned to be in south korea at the moment for the lunar new year we've been watching at this one pharmacy and this is a scene that's repeated at pharmacies throughout seoul where a steady stream of mainland visitors have been coming up and snapping up literally armfuls face masks filling up the bags and in some instances the cases that they're going to be returning to china with at the end of their holiday as this corona virus continues to spread in hong kong and that's

a huge shock tahj i cannot buy in everywhere in fact it's difficult to buy mass in mainland china right now there is a shortage so we have to take some back from overseas the increasing numbers of chinese visitors to south korea have certainly been good for business in recent years but it has led to a certain resentment building on the age old animosities that have existed between the koreans and the chinese and it's something which has been made worse with this coronavirus in fact a petition on the official presidential a website calling for a complete ban on chinese visitors during this lunar new year period has gained hundreds of thousands of signatures a ban would seem to be a drastic measure but in fact the main doctors association here has said that if things continue to get worse as a last resort that may be the way forward. january 27th 75 years since the liberation of auschwitz concentration camp and poland survivors

act with logic and urgency while the bill was adopted by a majority of 49 votes some m.p.'s didn't attend with a number of opposition members calling the vote unconstitutional examination of the army general. if it's a necessity to top the budget then it can be a priority to return all perspire minutes until the government receives a vote of confidence on the new cabinet 1st rather than the last the other wasn't even. the budget usually ends at the end of general so i insisted the vote must be held now but this doesn't mean parliament doesn't have the right to legislate even if there is no government. i was outside parliament several people were injured in protests against the vote security forces used to gas in response to some history rocks at them with security set up protesters failed to stop politicians from entering parliament to vote on

this controversial budget always meant to take c. days to just a few hours with m.p.'s eager to bring in these economic reforms as soon as possible but some are calling it a sham many argue the budget isn't a true reflection of the current state of the economy which is deteriorated further since nationwide protests started in october against corruption in the mismanagement of public funds the new government will be going into the new year with the board of the budget of the old government so it's really very absurd and surrealistic and we are definitely against it but unfortunately because of the forceful way that the protesters were treated we couldn't stop the session from happening last week newly appointed finance minister wisely said that $4.00 to $5000000000.00 of foreign loans are urgently needed to buy basics such as weak medicine and fuel for the coming year this year's budget includes further cuts to government spending but it's not clear if this among other economic changes will be

in the competition the reality is the citizens and the local communities took it as a referendum on him and so he comes out. all responding to the result so vini was came to highlight how the 5 star movement did in both the regions that voted on sunday i think and i believe she was still in on in time and i think it was huge and the 5 star movement hasn't even made it to the regional assembly in calabria we're talking about the main party in parliament which was everywhere in the last 2 elections and still 6 or 7 weeks ago had the most votes they also barely made it in the media. it's clear there's been a shift to the left and we can't wait to confront each other on a national level with our proposals for the economy society and family well let's talk more about this with stephan of it james an investigative journalist and the co-author of the black book of the league which looks into the league party stefan of there jeff thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera does some v.b. have a point in the sense that yes the league didn't secure it. but it was always

a bit of a high end bishan because it is a solidly and historically left wing party or virtually so is it really had the feet for him. well the fact of the incumbent democratic party candidate stiffened when she won the elections in emilia-romagna is definitely a big defeat for soviet who made every effort to give the election national relevance and he probably made it too personal however if you look at the numbers we see that salvini and are still very popular you know many of them on your salinas party increases its votes from 1000 percent to 32 percent compared to 2014 last the regional elections and basically got the same amount of votes as in 200-1000 european elections this means that the message of leg of the

12:48 am
when china stopped taking foreign recyclables over 2 years ago it sparked the need for greater innovation to deal with the world's plastic problem now engineers in australia have developed the technology to reduce plastic they can fit into a small room they say the micro factory ends the need for waste products to be transported far away and could lead to much more rubbish being recycled andrew thomas has the story from sydney. but plastic to be recycled it has to be collected and transported 1st to
12:49 am
a sorting center. then to a recycling plant but often these big plants are a long way from where the plastic was disposed of sometimes in other countries but at the start of 28 c. china banned most of its importation of plastic waste and that's forced to rethink . in australia engineers have developed a potential solution a micro recycling factory but what we're actually showing here is that the micro scale you can set up these decentralized facilities where it's not one big mega facility or transporting a lot of waste russia will take that factory on site on the occasion and safely convert that into a high value product all the machinery fits into a single room mixed plastic waste like this that used to be parts of a computer printer it's crushed and fed into a machine. on the high temperature and pressure the mixed plastics turned into
12:50 am
a single long filament that can be used in 3 d. printing to create nearly any product the scientists say 0 waste and no need to transport this machinery is within a university but the idea is this whole micro recycling factory is small enough to be put inside any business that has ways to recycle or any business that wants to manufacture products from recycled materials. this technology is in its infancy and has not yet been tested in a commercial setting but that should happen soon those behind the technology also think it can be moved around your mobile unit could actually be travelling on the back of a truck and going across to very small towns now imagine these communities could suddenly start recycling and be forming materials you can imagine
12:51 am
a future where every town actually has a micro factory that's taking milk at the available end of life products and reforming those into valuable materials and becoming part of this global supply chain there inventors hope these micro factories will become a compact solution to a very big problem andrew thomas al-jazeera city it's going to peter now with the sport. barbara thank you very much fan se and celebrities are paying tribute to pass the ball agent kobe bryant's former l.a. lakers star was killed in a helicopter crash on sunday along with these daughter and 7 others david stokes reports. the l.a. lakers fans chanting the name of greatest ever player outside the staples center in los angeles the arena the kobe bryant satellite so many times during his career his supporters still in a state of shock is this like you know like a bad dream you feel like you wake up from something like oh i can't believe it i
