on a lot easier. this is al-jazeera. alarms the whole robin you're watching the al-jazeera news our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes i have no idea who leaked it and why but it sure is damning the new book by john bolton undermined donald trump's impeachment defense also. the deal of the century is the opportunity of the century and we're not going to pass it. benjamin netanyahu praises the u.s. middle east peace plan a day ahead of its unveiling but the palestinians reject it. also china's prime minister visits the epicenter of the corona virus outbreak that's now killed at
2:01 am
least 81 people. the younger brother of the manchester arena bomber appears in a london court on charges of mass murder. also mourning a basketball legend fans pay their respects to kobe bryant after he his daughter and 7 others were killed in a helicopter crash. welcome to the news as the impeachment trial of u.s. president donald trump continues washington is reeling from claims made by transform a national security adviser john bolton and his manuscript for an upcoming book leaked to the new york times monday was the 2nd day the president's legal team presented his defense to the senate as there is hi joe castro has more. democrats
2:02 am
say the new information from john bolton that trump directly linked u.s. security aide to his demand that ukraine announced investigations into joe biden could significantly bolster the preachment case this is stunning it goes right to the heart of the charges against the president ambassador bolton essentially confirms the president committed the offenses charged in the 1st article of impeachment that article is abuse of power for allegedly putting his personal interests above that of the united states trump denies the allegation he's characterized bolton once his national security adviser as a disgruntled former employee who wants to sell more books i haven't seen him at this group but i can tell you nothing was ever said to john bolton but i have not seen a baby. i guess he's writing a book i have the answer to but several moderate republican senators appear to have been moved by bolton's revelations but only for republicans would be to side with
2:03 am
democrats to cold bolton to testify i think it's increasingly likely that other republicans will will join those of us who think we should hear from john bolton inside the senate chambers the president's legal team repeated the argument that he did nothing wrong the president was all time acting under constitutional authority under his legal authority in our national interest and pursuant to his oath of office. castro joins me now live from washington d.c. an idea a real push by the democrats to get witnesses to take the stand the republicans now have had the chance how would you describe the proceedings as they stand right now . well so apparently talking about a lot of things but not about john bolton in the hours of the opening argument that we've heard unfold thus far today we've heard the president's defense attorneys trying to put in
2:04 am
a sense joe biden the former vice president on the stand airing all of these accusations from ukrainian officials against biden and his son hunter which is of course where all of this started with those accusations making their way to president trump and then him in turn pressing ukraine to announce investigations into the bidens we also heard characterizations of president's personal attorney read giuliani as a distraction but not pertinent to the case but on the point of john bolton himself though his name wasn't mentioned there was one line from jay sekulow one of tribes attorneys that has gotten a lot of attention he said that quote there was not a single witness that democrats have put forward who have testified that trump said that they knew the ukraine security aide was linked to the announcement of the investigations and of course on the face he is accurate because john bolton is not a witness at least not yet but certainly democrats want to change that going
2:05 am
forward is certainly as you say you know he's not a witness yet but who knows what might have because what the democrats really want is this talk of the possibility of some republican defections all of the potential for a split in the ranks that may allow the democrats to win the vote to allow witnesses to testify about who was the ground about how opinions are changing. well it only would take for republicans to side with all the democrats in the senate chamber in order to open this trial to new witnesses and of course john bolton is likely to be at the top of the list here and speaking with reporters at least for moderate republican senator. have said they are open minded to this question of witnesses that was prior to bolton's revelations from about 24 hours ago and since that came out without even stronger statements from at least 2 republican senators who have committed to calling bolton forward if the trial
2:06 am
progresses to that point of course that opens up a whole other. other phase to the trial if that were to happen with possible more court battles with the white house likely trying to bar bolton from coming forward if he is still compelled by the senate and do go we'll continue to monitor events with the hydrogen counts through that a washington d.c. think you. well while his conduct is being debated on capitol hill what the white house is preparing to reveal his long awaited middle east peace proposal israeli prime minister binyamin netanyahu and opposition leader in washington to discuss the deal which the palestinians have already rejected a white house correspondent kimberly healthcare reports. the president alongside israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu u.s. president donald trump announced he is releasing his long awaited middle east peace plan many of the arab nations have agreed to it they like it they think it's great
2:07 am
they think it's a big start trump didn't say which arab nations supposedly liked the plan only that he'll unveil it on tuesday after white house consultations with the israeli leader and his political opponent blue and white chairman benny gantz gats was invited to the white house and met separately with trump amidst an intense election campaign back in israel. but missing from any announcement are the palestinians there are concerns tribe's plan will deny palestinian refugees the right of return palestinian leaders have declared proposal dead on arrival given there's been no consultation this is actually the front of the century the fraud of the century. cancelling everything get into international law and international. discussions broke down when the us embassy to disputed jerusalem from tel aviv in december 2017
2:08 am
the white house also cut off aid to the palestinians closed the palestine liberation organization offices in washington and recognized israel sovereignty over the golan heights seem to support netanyahu especially as he attempts to win reelection amid corruption allegations 1st. that the people of the structures the opportunity of the century the israeli. elections are in march trump denies he's interfering instead trump is touting this plan as an economic opportunity for palestinians. months ago his son in law jared cushion or proposed a peace to prosperity plan to raise $50000000000.00 to improve the lives of palestinians in the west bank and gaza it's something they should want they probably won't want it initially but i think in the end they will i think in the end they're going to want it the unveiling of president trumps middle east peace plan has been delayed repeatedly initially the white house said it was waiting
2:09 am
until after the israeli elections given israel is now preparing for its 3rd vote in under 12 months the white house now says it's moving ahead with the plans release can really help at al-jazeera the white house. now the head of the world health organization has arrived in china for talks on her to contain the corona virus outbreak so far 81 people have died while nearly 3000 more are infected. beijing. the streets in the capital beijing are almost empty and the most likely stay that way until next monday now that the lunar new year holiday has been extended to help curb the spread of the corona virus more countries and territories have increased restrictions on people from a province or even banned their entry in some cases as the chinese government continues with its plan on containing and treating those who have the virus. i have to keep wearing is a mask if i throw this away no mask then i'm asking the government to sell more
2:10 am
masks. i found out that everything sold out to buy food and vegetables now i hope the situation can get better after the chinese new year holiday china's 2nd most powerful government official premier league has been put in charge of the coronavirus situation he traveled down there will hunt and visited the construction site of a hospital that's been purpose built for the virus that we should build this hospital as soon as possible we set the date this february 2nd we bringing all the medical resources from all over the country will bring thousands of medical stuff to other hospitals in here he then spoke with medical workers on the front lines of the virus outbreak. throughout the day safe and save lives because what you're doing now is to save lives your nation is relying on you while the people of china might be relying on those medical workers the entire world watches as the number of dead
2:11 am
and infected continues to rise it's got al-jazeera beijing. well leading for all interests in the whole cold war warning the outbreak is far worse than what the chinese government has said adrian brown has been. we've been hearing the softer noone from caprio long he's a leading epidemiologist he is the head and he's the dean of hong kong university's medical medical faculty and he basically says based on commuter computer modeling that they've been using as other experts are around the world right now he estimates that in fact 44000 people have been infected by this virus in who hand and he also says that the rate of infection will double every 6 to 7 days so again this is based on computer modeling it doesn't mean it's necessarily going to happen but he said it is their forecast as sort of worst case scenario you might say so these are alarming words coming from hong kong and they appear to in
2:12 am
a sense contradict what the world health organization has been saying because the world health organization so far hasn't felt compelled to declare an international public health alert the experts in hong kong are saying that draconian measures will be needed not just by hong kong's government and china's government but by other governments around the world in the case of hong kong for instance you know hong kong has an about things like food imports it everything it eats just about is imported much of it coming from the mainland so his message was you know unless there is good planning unless we heed the warnings then you know we could be facing a global pandemic epidemic and in his words. well plenty more ahead here on the al-jazeera news hour including the war in yemen enters a new phase as the battlefield moves closer to the key city of mali. and the horrors of the passover well survivors have returned to the nazi concentration camp

was a couple of hours of legal argument between the prosecution and the defense most of which i can't go into it all because of legal reporting restrictions intelligence has been properly sworn in there are lots of things i can't say in order not to prejudice a fair trial but the crux of it is is this trial ready to go ahead yet the judge has said he needs more time to consider this so he has adjourned things until 1030 g.m.t. on wednesday morning if and when this does go ahead hashim a baby will be answering 22 counts of murder against him and one count of attempted murder which applies to all the 260 people the way in. in the manchester bombing there is also the charge of whether he was conspiring with his brother to cause an explosion that might have endangered life now would have brought a balloon fell far in 2017 may 22nd. of the manchester arena

known for their bravery it's what say the city 9 years ago and was a key factor in the downfall of moammar gadhafi but the people here also know what a cost can be when you oppose a dictator. in the 2011 revolution give up his forces offered by the city for 3 months 2800 people were killed and more than 13000 were wounded but it was the men from his right to capture the libyan leader in sirte and brought the war against him to a close here they believe the warlord khalifa haftar is just like gadhafi. and as an american he wants to rule libya the same way as gadhafi we fought against a dictatorship which controlled us for 40 years and we want allow that to happen again if you here thought the sacrifices of the revolution would have to be made again and few here are willing to predict when the day will come when misrata no longer has to mourn the death of this young man tony berkeley al jazeera is right.

enough to meet the demands of millions of lebanese side. al-jazeera fadal. best gaiters in the us are trying to find out what caused the helicopter crash that killed 9 people including basketball legend kobe bryant bryant's private helicopter came down on the hillside north of malibu in california on sunday heavy fog at the time 100 other aircraft including police helicopters rob rattles our correspondent outside the staples center in los angeles and rob really a nation joining in the morning for kobe bryant perhaps really still stunned about how this could happen to someone who was so globally well known. i would go even further than that so hail because of course basketball 'd is one of the most popular sports internationally and so kobe bryant a well known household name and a hero to basketball fans from beijing to buenos ariz the whole world is really
2:26 am
shocked about this but no place more so than here this is just a few meters from the staples center where kobe bryant for 20 years thrilled fans and led his teammates to so many victories so many championships take a look here at the scene in this plaza here you can see that there are people here we've been here since early this morning in the crowds have only grown people are wearing their lakers jerseys their purple and gold colors people are writing with sharpie pens on the marble 'd and granite here their notes of condolences there are countless flowers and. candles and even basketballs here so it's a very touching scene and i agree with you so i can't count the number of people we've spoken to today and yesterday who say we just can't believe it we can't
2:27 am
believe that this happened so that sense of disbelief is very much in evidence here there was to have been a basketball game at the staples center between the lakers and the l.a. clippers that would have certainly been an emotional moment that game scheduled for tuesday and has now been postponed by the n.b.a. we don't know when it's going to be held again and a lot of people now of course are trying to get over their disbelief and trying to figure out how this could have happened how a accident like this could have taken place of course the reality of see is dawning on many millions out around the world rob and of course the questions will start to begin about the circumstances around this accident issues about the helicopter issues about the weather conditions what is emerging in terms of that angle of inquiry. as far as the helicopter itself

the sikorsky 76 be kind of a luxury version used by lots of c.e.o.'s and people with money to get from place to place it has a very robust safety record this particular aircraft built in 1991 never any serious problems with it mechanically according to the records so a lot of the focus by the national transportation safety board and other investigators will be on the weather conditions and the pilot's behavior we know that it was very fog very low ceiling on sunday in that hilly part of the area outside of los angeles i talked to people who said they could even see the ils the fog was so dense and so low but the pilot asked one of the control trollers that he was in touch with for something called special visual flying rules
2:29 am
permission in other words he appeared to be flying maybe using a minimal amount of instruments and flying by by his eyes looking to see what was out there and flying around at one point also the air traffic controllers told the pilot your true will oh for us to track you on radar so it's early stages yet so hailed the n.t.s.b. has just begun combing through the wreckage there be going through all the documentation as well sad to report that the at least 3 sets of remains have been removed from that hillside by authorities they are still searching for the remains the remaining bodies and this is likely to take quite some time not only the recovery effort but also the investigation itself and it could be weeks if not longer before we know some mansur's what of course there's any morning that will continue to follow events with you through the day rob runnels thank you. only

california then it has to move eastwards at the same time though still cold enough for the junction of this feed from the gulf in the cold from north to meet and do some what could be significant thunderstorms snow on the northern edge so we got texas oklahoma and all places east will be affected the rain a become i think at his heaviest from new orleans east towards round the gulf really and then the cold inland probably doesn't allow much development once the snow has gone temps will rise a little bit kansas city a plus for the opposite minus 2 but it's not a huge change beyond this will be the thing to watch i suspect the amount of rain. now that the 4 has produced significant showers and a drop in temperature in cuba will this cold front do the same probably not i think we're just see the showers drifting east was through the bahamas bahama stays at 25 that in kingston or up a 31 degrees remarkably dry picture really until you get down towards panama where the showers all daily and big.

award winning documentaries in life nice. rude. welcome back you're watching al-jazeera is news hour with me it's the whole room the reminder of our top stories republicans are under growing pressure to allow witnesses to testify u.s. president donald trump's impeachment trial it follows the leak of a book drafted by the former trump advisor john bolton in which he claims the president told him to tie military aid for ukraine to an investigation into his political rival joe biden. we want all trump has been talking up his long delayed

little east peace proposal which is due to release on tuesday israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and opposition leader body counts are in washington to discuss the deal which the palestinians have already rejected. and germany has become the 2nd country in europe to confirm a case of coronavirus fronts reported 3 people have the illness last week in china where the outbreak started at least 81 people have died while close to 3000 are infected. and let's get more on our top story on president trump's impeachment trial and the political fallout from it michael isikoff is the chief investigative correspondent at yahoo news he joins me now from washington d.c. good to have you with us on the program mr isikoff just firstly how much of a worry will john bolton's potential revelations about ukraine gate if we can call it that be it to not only the republicans but to perhaps even to the democrats who love nothing more than to question trump's former national security adviser.
2:35 am
well until we know exactly what john bolton has to say it's a big worry for everybody but primarily for the republicans in the white house look the new york times broke this bombshell story last night that bolton has a book manuscript that he submitted to the white house as long ago as december 30 that alleges that the president spoke to him directly and said that he would not release the withheld ukrainian military funds in till the ukrainians coughed up documents relating to the bidens and supposed 2016 election interference there are no quotes from that book in the times story so we don't know precisely what bolton is alleging if there's any caviar if there were other things that were said by the president what the full context is you know this does raise a lot of questions but it's clearly turned up the heat for republicans they know if
2:36 am
they shut this trial down and vote to acquit the president without hearing from john bolton it's going to play right into democratic charges that this show is a cover up mr isikoff just bear with me for a moment we're going to cross over to washington to hear adam schiff the democratic senator speaking. than the case the president's lawyers just did in trying to contest that link between military aid investigations so once again they underscored the importance of john bolton as a witness who would corroborate exactly what the uncontested evidence that the house put on shows that president trump used hundreds of millions of dollars of military aid to coerce an ally to conduct these political sham investigations couple other points a couple other points i certainly hope so there seems to be a real shift in where the republican senators are and i think it's very hard for them. to maintain that they. want
2:37 am
a fair trial wanted to know all the facts when there's a witness who said i'm ready i've got something to say we have an outline of what he has to say it's really hard to say we're not going to hear that they but maybe but let me but let me address a couple other of the points that the president's team made 1st of all when they went to great pains which i thought was very amusing to say that giuliani is just a distraction here the one that will describe is essentially a human hand grenade he's merely a distraction he's a bit player and the house is only bring him up to distract you it wasn't the house that was on the phone was the linsky as the president was saying repeatedly that he wanted selenski to talk to rudy. giuliani's name i think came up with more than any other person's name in that call between 2 heads of state you've got to ask why was that if he was such a bit player as the president's team now would have you believe what's more when
2:38 am
the president's own people the 3 amigos when volcker and so on money secretary perry met with the president on may 23rd after the you not your ration of zelinsky what does the president say he says you got to talk to rudy. congressman adam schiff speaking to. my physical few were listening in there because and he adam schiff very neatly brought me to my next question which was about the shifting of opinion in the senate he said he felt a shift in republican sentences thinking that they really can stand tall defense about not having witnesses at the trial and what she is looking for as other democrats of full republicans to switch sides what's your understanding of whether that really could happen. i think it could mitt romney who is pretty much committed to having witnesses said it's increasingly likely that's
2:39 am
going to happen he's been talking to a number of republican senators and just within the last hour we have a report from the washington post that senator patrick toomey a republican from pennsylvania is floating the idea of a one for one witness swap the democrats would get bolton and presumably the president's lawyers would get somebody to choose on their own that could be hunter biden it could be joe biden it could be the whistleblower it could be somebody else democrats will of course will object to that say any of those witnesses or none of those witnesses are relevant but we'll see the fact that to me whose name hasn't been mentioned much in this in the mix is suggesting he's open to having witnesses gets you know that could be he could be the 4th vote it could be the 5th vote there could be $67.00 or 8 republicans who are going to go along with some sort of limited witness testimony and that this is going to be the biggest vote in
2:40 am
this trial and it could come in just a few days but of course while this drama plays out all confidence hill road really is the white house begins in earnest really in 2020 doesn't it we've got the iowa caucus happening next week i mean how much of an impact will proceedings in capitol hill be in terms of the impact it has in what will be water votes in 2 weeks after the votes that happened in the senate well yeah. well not only that i mean yes clearly it has the most impact for those senators like elizabeth warren bernie sanders michael bennet of colorado who are running for president and have to and senator closure of course from minnesota who are all running for president have to sit there in the senate away from the campaign trail i should point out that if we do go to witnesses which i think is very possible at this point this trial which most of us thought was going to end this coming friday will go on at least
2:41 am
for another week because those witnesses will have to be deposed and then the brought in to testify presumably on the senate floor so all those presidential candidates will have to be back in washington the week after the iowa caucuses the new hampshire primary and i'm sure that sanders warren and all will want to be out there for that and they may not be able to if the trial still going on but michael just very briefly is running out of time you how do you think this is impacting i'll be a member of american public in terms of impeachment fatigue if i was reading about it watching it old listening to it on the radio well you know i would say that in till last night there was a bit of that the country remains splint all of the polls showed no significant movement one way or the other but the bolton story clearly puts this into
2:42 am
a whole new ball game and you know we'll see if it moves the numbers on the that percentage of the american public that think that the allegations here rise to the level that the president should be removed from office we don't know yet but i think all of us are going to be watching the polls very closely over the next week of show he will i'm sure we will in and follow the story very carefully for the moment michael isikoff thanks so much fits on. now italy's right wing a leader right here salvini has admitted defeat after his party failed to win the northern region of emilio romagna salvini had hoped to overturn decades of leftist rule in the region and bring down the national coalition government but the sitting democratic party governess the foreigner city she won with 51.4 percent of the vote compared to 43.7 percent for the league's candide it well i didn't come in there was he who tried to turn this election into a referendum for or against the national government i'm talking about. and i have

to say i consider his behavior inappropriate and he's coming out as the big loser in the competition the reality is the citizens and the local communities took it as a referendum on him and so he comes out beat him. while responding to the result salvini was keen to highlight how the 5 star movement did in both the regions that voted on sunday ok and collaborate she was still in on in town and. the 5 star movement hasn't even made it to the regional assembly in calabria we're talking about the main party in parliament which went everywhere in the last a real actually and still 6 or 7 weeks ago had the most votes but they also barely made it in the media. it's clear there's been a shift to the left and we can't wait to confront each other on a national level with our proposals for the economy society and family some of the last living survivors of the holocaust have shared their emotional testimony as they mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the auschwitz death camp in

no response. when china stopped taking off foreign recyclables over 2 years ago innovation was needed to deal with the world's plastic problem now engineers not straightly say they developed a technology to help reduce plastic waste under thomas explains from sydney. the plastic to be recycled it has to be collected and transported 1st to a sorting center. then to a recycling plant but often these big plants are a long way from where the plastic was disposed of sometimes in other countries but at the start of 28 c. china banned most of its importation of plastic waste and that's forced to rethink . in australia engineers have developed a potential solution a micro recycling factory what we're actually showing here is that the micro scale
2:48 am
you can set up these these centralized facilities where it's not one big mega for syria transporting a lot of waste you actually take that factory on site on the location and safely convert that into a high value product all the machinery fits into a single room mixed plastic waste like this that used to be parts of a computer printer is crushed and fed into a machine. on the high temperature and pressure the mixed plastics turned into a single long filament that can be used in 3 d. printing to create nearly any product the scientists say there's 0 waste and no need to transport this machinery is within a university but the idea is this whole micro recycling factory is small enough to be put inside any business that has ways to recycle or any business that wants to manufacture products from recycled materials. this technology is in its

infancy and has not yet been tested in a commercial setting but that should happen soon those behind the technology also think it can be moved around your mobile unit could actually be travelling on the back of a truck and going across to a very small towns now imagine these communities could suddenly start recycling and reforming materials you can imagine a future where every town actually has a micro factory that's taking nokia available end of life products and reforming those into valuable materials and becoming part of this global supply chain there inventors hope these micro factories will become a compact solution to a very big problem andrew thomas al-jazeera city. well still ahead in sports like pakistan's cricketers are still long top of the world and t 20 peter will have those details.
