al-jazeera. and. the a. after 70 years of little progress this could be the last opportunity they will ever have us president donald trump unveils his plan to end the decades of conflict between israel and palestine. and we say a 1000 times no no no to the deal of the century a palestinian president mahmoud abbas calls trump steal a conspiracy saying his people's rights are not for sale. lombardo sarah this is al jazeera live from london also coming up on the program
1:01 am
that trumps trouble at home isn't over as his impeachment trial moves on to the next stage and china vows to defeat a deadly virus that's now killed 106 people but alarm rises as the outbreak spreads beyond beyond its borders. allow stopper to see for palestinian statehood that's how donald trump has described his long awaited plan to end the decades of conflict between israel and palestine the u.s. president unveiled his proposal to a packed room in the white house alongside the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu set a quick look now at some of the key points from the plan well it calls for 2 states israel and palestine trump says that gaza and the west bank will be connected by bridges and the tunnels will be a contiguous state the us president has declared an undivided jerusalem will be the
1:02 am
capital of israel but the palestinian capital will be in parts of eastern jerusalem not east the plan calls for a 4 year freeze on israeli settlement activity but says the us will recognize current settlements as israeli territory trump also says that palestinian territory will be doubled. my vision presents a win win opportunity for both sides a realistic 2 state solution that resolves the risks of palestinian statehood to israel's security today israel has taken a giant step toward peace yesterday prime minister netanyahu informed me that he is willing to endorse the vision as the basis for directing goshi asians and i will say the general also endorsed and very strongly with the palestinians a historic breakthrough. it's a great plan for israel it's
1:03 am
a great plan for peace frankly mr president given all that you've already done for israel i'm not surprised you have been the greatest friend that israel as ever had in the white house. or palestinian president mahmoud abbas calls transplant a conspiracy and says that no palestinian can accept the state without just mostly mystical slimmest capital. well i'm not shy and. in the announcement we did not find anything new compared to what we heard 2 years ago it is sufficient to say that 2 years ago we heard that there is a limb is the undivided capital of israel as claimed by them we cannot wait and wait and keep on waiting our position has not changed and after we had. we say no no no to the deal of the century. stephanie decker is
1:04 am
in gaza with the palestinian perspective and harry foresaid has an israeli reaction from west jerusalem 1st though let's go to mike hanna who is in washington where of course that deal was announced. you know the deal hasn't been accepted by the palestinians it was very obvious from the beginning that it wasn't going to be accepted by the palestinians so why do you think that american president and the israeli and benjamin netanyahu went ahead with it. well the americans are saying that this deal was long in the baking as it was said critics contend however that it comes at a convenient time for both these leaders president trump facing impeachment proceedings in the senate and prime minister netanyahu indicted on corruption charges back in israel so certainly the cynics contend that it is a deflection of the personal troubles of these particular leaders but at the same
1:05 am
time the trumpet ministration insisting that this deal has long been researched long be negotiated the point person for it the president's son in law jared cushion it is a deal which would appear on the face of it to be based on the 2003 roadmap to peace drawn up by president george w. bush however it differs from that in a number of significant ways in particular the stringency with which it deals with palestinian claims to statehood now president trump ailsa this as the long awaited deal comparing it to his real estate. deals when he was in civilian life sir to speak he was refused to be praised by prime minister netanyahu giving very clearly the a symbiotic relationship between the 2 leaders as they face their own legal and political problems but certainly from the palestinian side as we heard outright rejection of the deal the palestinians have refused to engage with an
1:06 am
administration which started off by declaring jerusalem to be the capital of israel something that u.s. administrations for decades had not recognized another point the trump administration has done before this is a not reserving the united nations position on settlements as infringing international law the secretary of state just a few months ago saying that this is no longer the u.s. position now in the plan all of these details have come together what were problems in the past in attempting to reach a peace aleutian have now become solutions in the mind of the trump administration . i can't with the latest there from washington d.c. mike thank you all so that's where the deal was announced well scope to the region to see what impact it's having their reaction anyway harry for city is in west jerusalem harry benjamin has now certainly looked very very happy standing next to
1:07 am
the president on pronouncing the b.-o. but in general what reaction has there been in israel itself well you're certainly netanyahu had been promising that he wanted to make the most of a historic opportunity it was pretty clear very soon in the course of the unveiling of that opportunity for him to a large degree meant annexation. of israeli settlements in the short term the prime minister's office says that there will be a vote put to the israeli cabinet this coming sunday to enact that and as well as that the next ation of the jordan valley and of permanent israeli security presence there for netanyahu this is something that he very clearly wants to make the centerpiece of his campaign for the latest israeli election which falls on march the 2nd he withdrew his application for immunity from prosecution from the israeli parliament the knesset earlier in the same day allowing for his indictment to go
1:08 am
through and be lodged in the israeli courts on 3 separate corruption cases because he wants it seems to focus very much on the deal and its aftermath and as well as these huge sweeping changes in the occupied west bank with vast tracts becoming sovereignty under israeli sovereignty there's also the prospects of an undivided jerusalem and so these are things that are obviously going to be very much propounded by netanyahu although there are some on the israeli right who say they don't go far enough the very mention of a palestinian state is toxic for the israeli far right. harry forsett with the latest there from west jerusalem thank you and now let's go to stephanie decker who is in for us somehow as palestinians in gaza and in the west bank as well reacted to this. well there's been outright rejection in the political leadership from all the different factions and groups that have come together they spoke yesterday they
1:09 am
sat together yesterday they sat together today in amman. rejecting it to immunity the palestinians do not speak with one voice when it comes to many things of the factions but certainly when it comes to this they are talking from the same starting point let's say of our rejection that this has nothing to do with palestinian interests and we need to do with israeli interests we are going to see we just announced a group of fatah which is of course present about 6 party coming to gaza next week to speak to have mass these 2 sides have been at loggerheads for a very long time i'm not sure what their strategy is going to be moving forward the leadership of how masses outrightly denied this deal and said it's going to use all means necessary to confront it there's been a general strike called here for tomorrow and that just means that shops and schools etc government buildings the ministries will be closed it's just started to
1:10 am
rain quite heavily that's expected to continue tomorrow as there were enough to wait and see whether we're going to see people coming out onto the streets i can tell you from speaking to people here they're more concerned about just getting through the day there's a cooking gas prices here at the moment there's high poverty high unemployment is of course under siege people do not have freedom of movement they cannot leave so there may be concern is is served by evil they will tell you at this point in time and certainly this plan doesn't offer any political solution which would indicate that the seeds in the situation that they're facing could improve the near future. i think definitely the latest. stephanie thank you. well let's go to a diplomatic editor james bases at the u.n. headquarters in new york james obviously the israeli palestinian conflict has always been about more than just israel and the palestinians as we've seen the u.s. is involved many of the countries take an interest to say the least so talk us through the international reaction to this deal. well certainly i've been gauging
1:11 am
reaction from around the world and it's fair to say some of it is negative and the rest of it is somewhat lukewarm let's start here in the u.n. headquarters building antonio good terrorists the secretary general has issued a brief 2 paragraph statement saying that he's seen the announcement by the united states but he must be governed by security council and general assembly resolutions on the situation and clearly the plan that has been proposed goes against those resolutions particularly with regard to settlements and the idea that those settlements could be annexed an annex very soon jordan a key player no one from jordan attended the ceremony at the white house the foreign minister iman sufiah he has one of the dangerous consequences of unilateral israeli measures such as the alec and exception of palestinian land the saudi king has been on the phone to president abbas king solomon says saudi arabia will stand
1:12 am
with the palestinian leadership stretching the kingdom's position on the palestinian issue will not change to turkey turkey says that the plan is born dead it says jerusalem is turkey's red line the palestinian people and territories cannot be purchased a statement from tehran there a spokesman saying that they're describing the deal as the treason of the century in lebanon hezbollah the most powerful military force there says an attempt to wipe wipe out the palestinian people's rights but prime minister netanyahu on his way from washington now to moscow earlier on the russian foreign ministry says we don't know if the american pro bowl is mutually acceptable or not clearly since then we've had the palestinian response and pretty clear the palestinians are against it obviously for the u.s. is closest allies this is a problem they want to be polite but i think they have their reservations just listen to the statement from the u.k. foreign secretary dominic rob he says it's clearly
1:13 am
a serious proposal but then he goes on to say oh. only the leaders of israel and the palestinian territories can determine whether these proposals can meet the needs and aspirations of the people they represent and we've heard clearly since he issued that statement from the palestinians a pretty similar statement from germany from foreign minister heiko mass it says the u.s. proposal raises questions will now discuss with our partners in the year you particularly how the proposal relates to internationally agreed parameters and it's clear that the proposal goes against many of those parameters a summary then of international reaction lots of analysts are weighed in on this just possibly worth giving you one because it's the head of the international crisis group rob malley and he's important because his previous job was the key expert for the obama administration on this issue his conclusion strip away the domestic and israeli political considerations he says and the message to the palestinians boiled down to its essence he says is you've lost get over it.
1:14 am
harsh message james bays or the latest there from the u.n. thank you. now an interview with al-jazeera president trance senior adviser jared questionnaire says the status quo isn't working and that something has to change. we tried to carve out a way with land swaps and with bridges and tunnels to create a palestinian state that can be contiguous where you can drive from the top through tunnels and bridges and through land and highways all the way to the bottom and so we've been able to achieve that the map will be released publicly and that's something that was very very hard to do but quite frankly if we don't do this today at the rate at which israel is growing i think that it will never be able to be done so we see this as the last state for the palestinian last chance for the palestinians to have a state and the other big accomplishment the president made today was getting israel to agree to the palestinian state the status quo is not working it has not
1:15 am
work and when you stick to these ideas that everyone's used for all these these these past years to try to solve this there's been a lot of great ideas but they haven't gotten it done and the palestinians are still stuck now after his announcement donald trump released this map he says 8 shows what a future state of palestine could look like links gaza with the west bank by means of a tunnel. well i'm joined in the studio by hugh lovett who is a policy fellow the european council on foreign relations obviously the issue has always been to create a contiguous palestinian state so we're you know people could move from one end to the state of to the other you look at the map you've seen the plan you know the plan says it does create a path to israel and the palestinians say state side by side would you agree no not at all i think it's quite clear when you look at the map it's clearly a map that is consolidating a one state to reality if anyone's looked at
1:16 am
a map of south africa i think that would be quite a few similarities it does allow for the emergence of a contiguous all viable palestinian state despite what the top administration would say and it's also in many ways i would say the fulfillment of the most maximalist tendencies that we've seen in israel since the beginning of the occupation in 1967 which has been very much about how israel can consolidate its control over the west bank absorb a maximum out of palestinian west bank territory but a minimum amount of its of its inhabitants of its palestinian happens and so i think you know despite this by trump saying is a need for fresh thinking actually what the americans have presented are basically the sort of long running plan that the israeli settler movement has being promoted for the last 50 years it seems that unlikely that anyone who put this plan together and knew the palestinians would ever think that the palestinian side would accept it and also the optics of the way it was presented with president trump and
1:17 am
benjamin it and yell standing right next to him it almost made it. impossible for any palestinian leader even if they were even thinking about accepting the or to be able to accept it why do you think they've done it that's the $1000000.00 question i think it's quite clear it's quite remarkable when one listens to the rhetoric coming out of the trump and ministration. that this idea that regardless of whatever the. listings may choose to do whether they accept this so-called state or not it doesn't really matter to israel. you know i personally don't buy that line because i think from the palestinian perspective you know the 2 states was always only a concession basically forgoing what they would call the historic palestine. and so what sort of if in 4 years they have accepted the state then what then we see the continued consolidation of this sort of one state reality which becomes increasingly explicit and i think in doing this time we'll see increasing calls on
1:18 am
the palestinian side for equal rights within a one state solution which i don't think favors an israeli country that's majority jewish and democratic is that's what's now the choice really sort of a one state encompassing everyone or a 2 state solution which seems a bit dead do you think it is than in the us that now that option i mean jerrod question i was talking about this deal representing the reality on the ground i mean does he actually have a point when he says that what the back does represent the reality on the ground in that it's been designed to allow israel to retain the settlements in that regard. but whether the 2 states is dead you know there's a question of physics about you know one is one set of the too many but ultimately i think if we do see an annexation of the jordan valley and particularly sensitive areas around jerusalem then maybe that is the case but it's also about politics and you know annexation extension of israeli sovereignty makes it that even more harder
1:19 am
for a future israeli government should ever have the political will to actually withdraw the settlers and so i think unfortunately i do think and that's perhaps overstated all the time but i do really think that we are in the last days of a viable 2 state solution he would love it policy fellow at the european council on foreign relations thank you for showing us that us thank you. now still to come here on al-jazeera iraqi protesters the famed their camps from a violent crackdown by security forces are waiting for a competition or a security goal boris johnson's one way decision has alongside with the u.s. . hello once again i'm afraid it's a tile of floods and fires once again into australia we have got this area of cloud

and rain this tropical low system making its way into northern territory over the next couple days the still quite a rash of showers continuing across northern parts of queensland particularly into the northwest of the state and eventually that will slide its way down into central areas of australia look a little further south you can see whether heat is 38 celsius there for adelaide temperatures starting to fall back in perth actually said 27 on wednesday the heat will continue to drive its way further race which we're picking up a hive around 37 in melbourne on thursday could touch 41 as we go on into friday for the north as you can see those showers looks set to continue not too bad in new zealand but we are going to see some rather brisk winds feeding in particular across the south island over the next day. but too bad across japan as well over the next a diode so we've had some clouds some rain some sleet and some snow easing across northern parts of honshu whole car that's going to be the same as we go on through wednesday eventually it will continue to drive its way further east with the north

welcome back is a reminder of the top stories on al-jazeera donald trump as outlined his plan to end the palestinian israeli conflict his 80 page plan suggests that there should be 2 states israel and the contiguous palestine it says and undivided jerusalem will be israel's capital but palestine will also have its capital in eastern jerusalem. well as gazans express their anger towards israel and the us palestine rejected the proposal president the president of the palestinian national authority mahmoud abbas said the plan will not work and it would be thrown into history's garbage you said it was not for sale. spin announcing his middle east peace plan his lawyers of concluded their opening arguments in his impeachment trial in the senate trump's team called on the senate to acquit him and play down

allegations from former national security adviser john bolton but some republican senators have proposed the bolton's unpublished manuscript be made available for senators to review on a classified basis the senate may resolve the issue of whether to call witnesses in a vote on friday or saturday well the impeachment trial next moves into the question and answer stage the senate minority leader chuck schumer has reiterated them across demand for key witnesses including john bolton to testify. the bottom line is very simple we want the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth that's what witnesses and documents mean the president's lawyers have spent 3 days of voiding the truth pointing fingers here there and everywhere even one of them gave a political speech on the floor it was like a campaign rally because they don't want the facts they don't want the truth they're afraid of them. the number of known cases of the coronavirus is doubled in
