12:02 am
significant amounts of classified information and cannot be printed in its current form excerpts of the book by the former national security adviser were leaked to the new york times in the midst of president trump's impeachment trial and if you have any question about it at all. you need to hear from his former national security advisor don't wait for the book don't wait to march 17th when it is in black and white. to find out the answer to your question was it all the motive some of the motive or none of the motive and we think as i mentioned the case is overwhelmingly clear without john bolton but if you have any question about it. you can a race all down let's go live to our white house correspondent kimberly how could so tell us more about these efforts by the white house to essentially silence bolton yeah there is quite
12:03 am
a concerted effort to do just that the latest revelation a letter that has been made public as of today put forward by the white house john bolton's attorneys essentially making the argument that the book that he is planning to release next month that it cannot be released because it would put national security at risk the letter saying that this was caused exceptionally grave harm to national security that the conversations between the u.s. president is former national security advisor are classified at the top secret level so essentially what the effort is is to try and avoid what we already know has been leaked in the form of the book that john bolton all but confirms that the president abused his presidential powers for political purposes by leveraging the office of withholding military aid in order to pick up an investigation on political rival former vice president joe biden so this effort to try and stop the
12:04 am
book is also an effort to try and stop the testimony on capitol hill that we know many democratic senators are pressing very hard to have made public in the senate trial to remove the president from office so what are the means of the white house using to prevent him testifying. well certainly there's this effort warning in arguing national security to prevent the leak of the book which we also know that the president a standard playbook for him is to use the courts as well this is something that the president has done whether it is trying to keep his tax returns from being made public knowing that once things get into the courts the wheels of justice move very very slowly and that buys the president time hopefully a decision in the court saying the calculation is by the white house will come after the u.s. election so this would not hurt the president's chances of reelection but the president's also discrediting the testimony he tweeted very early today that
12:05 am
reacting to this bolton bombshell as it's called that he fired the former national security adviser because it would be world war 6 by now that when he did then the for the president says that john bolton immediately went out and wrote a nasty and untrue book so essentially the president has sort of put forward this attack on many fronts whether it be setting executive privilege that the former national security adviser can't testify whether it be national security whether it be in the courts or even just discrediting the testimony before it's even heard there is a very big effort by this white house and by this president to prevent john bolton from testifying can really help it thank you very much indeed. let's get a sense of what's happening in the senate with heidi castro who's live on capitol hill and to the president's defense has introduced a novel argument for acquittal of a small. that's why lauren and you know we were wondering how the president's
12:06 am
council may be updating their defense given the revelations that kimberly was just telling us about from john bolton will today we may have an answer alan dershowitz one of the president's celebrity attorneys argued just moments ago that in the case of the president asking for help with his reelection from ukraine that that would be not an impeachable offense in the thinking goes that the president yes he may have known that that would be in his personal interest but that a president has a right to believe that winning reelection would also be in the national interests so that the rationale there seeming to say to these senators who are weighing whether or not to convict and remove him from office in a sense saying that even if everything that john bolton says is true even if the evidence the democrats have provided prove that trump indeed did what he's accused of which is trying to leverage u.s.
12:07 am
security aid for dirt on his political opponents from ukraine even if he did so so goes the rationale of the president's attorneys he could still not be removed from office because his motives may still be in the public's interest so at that is what people are discussing at this moment we also heard from moderate republican senators those who may be in the middle about this question of whether or not to not only convict or acquit the president but whether to open this trial to potential more witnesses like john bolton and they seem to have also zeroed in on this question of the president's motives asking the 2 legal sides today what if trump had mixed motives what. he did want to gain personally from this request but he also had public interest in mind so the way things are shaping up it certainly seems that the defense team of the president is making some headway if you if you
12:08 am
read into these questions from those moderate republicans who may be the ones to really decide the remaining program matters of this trial then of course bigger picture it would take 2 thirds of the senators to remove the president from office which is certainly a very high hurdle to overcome i did you pass or thank you very much michael isikoff is a chief investigative correspondent at yahoo news he joins us live from washington thanks for being with us how much you use it now do you think in the end that we will hear from john bolton and or any other witnesses. that is the question of the hour the question of the week what's going on now with the question and answer session is really just a warm up to what is going to be those critical votes on friday on witnesses mcconnell told his caucus last night that he didn't
12:09 am
have the votes to prevent witnesses but there's but he's still trying and he's got a lot of power as anybody follows the senate knows so we don't know it's really coming down to just these handful of moderates who could end this trial this week or push it into a whole new level where it goes on for weeks and weeks and if it does go on for weeks and weeks who has the most to lose or do you think. well you know it's really hard to say and this sort of new curveball on this was the disclosure today that the white house and sent john bolton's lawyer a letter last week saying that if the book manuscript contains classified information and he may not publish it that ratcheted this thing up quite a bit and it's interesting to follow the timeline here that letter which we just
12:10 am
saw today january 25th was january 23rd that's when the white house informs bolton that the manuscript that he had submitted back in at the end of december december 30 contains classified information and can't be disclosed to the public it's just a few days later that the contents of bolton's book. is leaked to the new york times and we get that bombshell story on sunday so clearly that was bolton and his team striking back at the white house saying oh you think you're going to muzzle me read this and voila there it was in the new york times so bolton is a pretty savvy bureaucratic player he's got a top shot top notch lawyer i think it's going to be really interesting to see how they respond to this white house attempts to muzzle him and want someone to voters make of all this whole potential that is. kind of great to the list. or will they
12:11 am
if they sort of you wanting into the. you know i think that there's a bit of both depending on which segment of the electorate you're looking at look the polls indicate that the country is pretty much split on the issue of impeachment although more and more they do show that a rather sizable majority of the public thinks that the president acted improperly and that witness. as should be called in this trial so far though it's still pretty much $5050.00 as to whether or not the public thinks that the conduct rises to the level of removal from office and that's really maybe the strongest argument the president's lawyers have which is it's an election year we're going to have an election later this year let's let the voters decide what to make of this

and japan have been the 1st to airlift their citizens from the epicenter of the outbreak the u.k. e.u. france and india are also planning evacuations many of those returning home will be placed in isolation or in a report. after completing an emergency mission a plane carrying more than $200.00 japanese citizens arrives in tokyo from china they're among the 1st foreign nationals to be evacuated by the government from the capital of who bay province which is under lockdown because of coronavirus. curie q so when i was very worried because the situation changed very rapidly honestly i have quite relieved that they brought his home swiftly with the chartered plane. upon arrival 4 of the passengers suffering flu like symptoms were taken to hospital . as the crisis deepens more countries are looking to follow the lead of japan and the united states and begin airlifting their nationals out we have taken

a decision the smalling to prepare a plan for an operation to provide some assisted departures for isolated and vulnerable astride the ns in in the who by province in wu han where the outbreak started medical staff and hospitals are struggling to cope with the number of cases which grows by the day to do so 2 completely new makeshift hospitals are being built to treat coronavirus patients with construction workers operating around the clock. and the government is sending thousands of extra doctors and nurses to a province from other parts of china well you hope so. i will tell my family the exciting news after i come back i've not dared to tell them now for fear that they would be worried about me. in hong kong where there are several confirmed cases of the virus the government has been criticised for being too slow to react it's now

suspended ferry and train services to and from mainland china indefinitely the hong kong government has been coming under increasing pressure with many calling for the border crossings between here and mainland china to be closed completely which hasn't happened the partial closure is being welcomed by the resorts so a sense that it has come too late and isn't enough. the transport restrictions will heap more pressure on the economy of the city which is already struggling after months of anti-government protests wayne hay al jazeera hong kong. now under their team is travel to the city of hunan province which is just north of and is known as china's medical capital they tried to enter a manufacturing plant where more than 50 percent of china's facemasks and produced they were forced to leave the province and officials warned that they would quarantine them if they didn't stop hiding reports. to get a better idea of how the coronavirus is having an impact on communities closer to
12:17 am
the epicenter in will han and who'd a province. we took the south down train from beijing we got off and central one province its southern border with who they covers more than 400 kilometers the longest of any other province and the spreading of the virus is a big and sensitive concern as we are about to exit the station we were met by a local government official he knew we were coming and told the local police our plan this to try to go to china and i told them they composite a checkpoint they have to go back to beijing. but they said they wouldn't stop us instead they would follow us until we reached a checkpoint to the community we wanted to visit the sign says hold the car stop a check for about an hour away from the train station the town you on exit from the freeway this is described as the medical supply capital of china so we wanted to go in because the face masks are manufactured there more than 50 percent for china are manufactured inside and we've heard that they have brought the staff back from
12:18 am
their holiday early to manufacture more face mask but it's so sensitive they're stopping us they're not even letting us go inside. we were not the only ones being turned away other cars were prevented from going in if they could not prove that they were from chung young. and then we were told by the official that if we did not leave one province before the end of the day it was highly likely that we would be put in quarantine as the end of the extended holiday draws closer many people in these communities could be cut off even longer if additional transportation restrictions are put into place scott had a chunk on. but to mark perishes the regional medical director of northern europe at international s.o.s. which is a medical and travel security for me joins me now in the studio thanks for coming in so so far how well do you think this outbreak has been handled globally very well i think if we go back and we just think now we've got 6000 cases around the world the majority of those in china the chinese health authorities identified the
12:19 am
virus very quickly once this outbreak had been a been found they sequenced the virus so we know the molecular structure of it which helps us then make diagnostic tests force and then they have instigated this extraordinary quarantine you know will hon and many other places in stocks transport things all of which helps to stop the spread of the virus which is good what about the global reaction there i mean have people other governments in other countries been a bit sickly once been we want to go to another country then you got the same issues there will presumably not in the same scale. probably not on the same scale there's about 100 cases outside china so far and the rest are within china the global reaction has varied some countries have instigated quite strong rules on what they will do with people coming back from china from will han chinese the australian authorities i see are asking people to spend 2 weeks in christmas island
12:20 am
other countries maybe not so much so now it's a combination of a medical issue health care issue and then there's some geo political decisions on that and then the some transport and business decisions you know we have british airways stopping flights now and other things so that's going to affect individuals if they want to or if they're in china how do you know our effective of the various measures that people are taking out of independently to people you see people wandering around a face mask is that going to make a difference not hugely these surgical face masks that we do see increasing numbers of people using our slightly affected but not much gets in the science of them and it doesn't protect the eyes in the virus gets into these things called mucus. membranes which is the eyes they are helpful and they stop you touching your mouth which is quite useful but i wouldn't rely on them there are other respirators those sort of the more formal mask which are which are better but you need to fit those properly sorry so so what what actually are the methods that are help from is it does it boil down to washing your hands properly yes simple hygiene measures are still remarkably effective keep your hands washed regularly are in soap and water
12:21 am
or one of those alcoholic hand washes if you can get soap and water practice good hygiene don't touch your face stay away from areas where there are people that have coughs and colds particularly if you're in china be aware don't touch live animals or even or dead animals in china don't go to the live animal markets they've closed all those those make sure that you eat food as well cooked and just in terms of the talked about the the the the travel side of it if you are repatriating in the number countries decide to bring home people who are stuck in areas of china is going to should you have been on the plane with that i mean what's the how would you manage a situation like that when you bring people back and on planes out there you'd want to 1st of all screen the individual before they get on that plane see if any of them have any symptoms and then when they're returning to the u.k. this pretty people from say come people coming from will harm the question that you have to answer and i think the answer that is made maybe by different governments
12:22 am
in different ways is are these individuals likely to have coronavirus new current virus therefore should we isolate them quarantine them for 14 days which is the length of time that the virus seems to take to incubate or should we let them go home with some advice just to stay at home if they have any symptoms see the health care for officials we're seeing quite a lot of governments take the 1st option and increasingly quarantine people when they come home which it's a belt and braces approach it's another measure to try to stop this virus spreading thank you very much indeed dr parrish thank you for coming to us pleasure. that least 10 civilians have been killed in russian air strikes targeting a village in syria's problems russia's supporting syrian president bashar al assad's push to retake the rebel stronghold pro-government forces have now retaken a strategic town in a province f.n.c. has displaced hundreds of thousands of people as victoria getting reports. the.

a slick video thanking donald trump to his controversial plan to end conflict with palestine just weeks ahead of the israeli election. argentina's ambitious project to feed millions of people and end poverty. and spoke with peter why for me i want to see a new stack it is banking on plenty of drama. hello again welcome back to you in a national weather forecast here across turkey of the next few days we are looking at a wintry mix coming into play we're talking about a lot of rain and snow for the lower elevations but in the higher elevations it is going to be some very heavy snow we're talking anywhere between $50.00 to $100.00 centimeters of snow in some locations by the time we go through the next 72 hours
12:26 am
so we go watching this very very carefully as you can see her you could be getting a little bit better you can be clearing out by the time we get towards friday it's going to be eastern turkey that sees the majority of the snow by the time we go into the weekend well for the rest of europe the temperatures are on the way up we could be seeing temperatures coming out of the high single digits going into the teens by the time we get towards friday well above average for this time of year in paris you are one of those cities but in $48.00 is going to be rainy as well 13 degrees and rain here on thursday a little bit of a break in terms of the rain on friday but by the time we get towards saturday it is going to be rainy tempers about 6 degrees above average there here across northern africa we are looking at fairly decent conditions across much of the region and terms of temps are though it is going to be 18 degrees here in benghazi maybe some clouds rolling into parts of cairo as we go towards friday with a temperature of $21.00 degrees.

gives you a deal dead and did you get the peace prize too soon. is this going to hurt or help donald trump's reelection chances it is very true when they think you could shoot somebody on 5th avenue and not have any consequence this is not a muslim issue this is a human calling the issues join me in the hot sun as i put up from questions to my special guests and challenge them to some straight talking to go debate here on al-jazeera. big storms generate sounds like maybe angles in this story are too numerous for comfort with different angles from different perspectives things are going to really bring relief. to the reward even separate the spin from the facts the misinformation from the judge is so clear and sounds to see and hear it with the listening are noxious 0.

you. are going to reminder the top stories here now jazeera the white house has warned former national security adviser john bolton that he can publish a book where he's reportedly made explosive revelations about president donald trump alternate legibly wrote that trump told him he wanted to freeze $391000000.00 in security aid to ukraine unless he have investigated the democrats. those claims are at the center of trump's impeachment trial which has moved on to its next stage in the senate president's defense team and democratic representatives on string written questions about trump's charges. the world health organization is warning
12:29 am
that governments across the globe need to be on alert for the new coronavirus that's killed 132 people in china the u.s. and japan have been the 1st to evacuate their citizens from the epicenter of the outbreak. israel's army is deploying more troops in the occupied west bank and near the gaza border for those protests against u.s. president donald trump's proposed deal to end the israeli palestinian conflict thousands of palestinians have been injured by israeli army for. as they voiced their anger against the plan saying it further undermines their rights what abraham reports from ramallah. palestinians say the proposed middle east plan put forward by the u.s. president changes nothing and actually makes things worse there are still under israeli military occupation and gearing up for more restrictions. there was a small protest in the jordan valley on wednesday an area that makes up nearly one 3rd of the occupied west bank
12:30 am
a territory that israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has promised to annex. the israeli army beefed up its presence in the area and close the fruits preventing many activists from getting there i don't i. there's really army has put up checkpoints in several areas in the jordan valley we had to walk a lot but we found another checkpoint their main point is to prevent us from reaching the areas we agreed to meet and. listen. to those who did manage to reach the area we're involved in scuffles with israeli soldiers. protesters also took to the streets in a number of west bank cities including bethlehem there these radio army used tear gas and rubber coated steel bullets to disperse the crowds. the anger among palestinians has been increasing especially after the u.s. recognized jerusalem as israel's capital in 2017. stinney ns want occupied east
12:31 am
jerusalem to be the capital of their future state and not as the trump plan proposes in eastern suburbs are here or there are people that are going to trample all over else jerusalem tells its own story every stone has its history and it was never an israeli or an american it is palestinian islamic and arab. the turnout has been some of the people we spoke to say it's the palestinian authority that need to be. those protests but there is also a great sense of apathy here people do not expect much to change and say that the plan is being implemented on the ground anyway going into the streets against the. israeli soldiers is a risk and people are waiting to see how far we go in facing the. american menace. and i think this is not going to be
12:32 am
a short term thing going to be a long term. leaders of hamas in gaza have also condemned the proposed plan and norman. our message was clear we object to the so-called deal of the century this is why we must stand united and work hand in hand in order to confront this conspiracy against our people we must have a unified national strategy to restore our people's rights to end the division once and for all. with israeli elections only a few weeks away many years think prime minister benjamin netanyahu may start the annexing off some palestinian territory sooner rather than later. the occupied west bank. a trance middle east plan is already have an impact on the final weeks of israel's election campaign benjamin netanyahu is presenting it as a victory for his premiership is main rival benny gantz is promising to bring the entire deal to
12:33 am
a vote in the israeli parliament very forsett reports from west jerusalem this is historic and this you became the 1st world leader to recognize israel's sovereignty over areas in judea and samaria that are vital to our security and central to our heritage the soaring music and off camera voiceover had all the hallmarks of a campaign video promising israeli sovereignty in the occupied west bank but for benjamin netanyahu a day after what he had turned a history making event in washington the breaks have been at least momentarily applied he had promised to hold a vote in cabinet on sunday on an exciting the jordan valley and illegal israeli settlements in the occupied west bank but the united states is now making it clear that it wants further coordination before the process begins so does this hamper netanyahu election campaign one former israeli diplomat thinks not one thinking full day difficult work he did in creating the split so you know what is behind it
12:34 am
so if there is another move with which they can help him be quiet let my government do it. with it we'll have an overwhelming majority of americans would not stop him but netanyahu isn't the only one trying to make electoral capital out of the announcement his defense minister the head of a rival right wing grouping of parties said annexation had to happen now not after the election although. i've ordered the formation of a special team to implement the application of israeli law and sovereignty on all jewish settlements in the same area judea and jordan valley and the northern dead sea the team will start working immediately. while the israeli left has rejected the plan netanyahu his main centrist challenger benny gantz is in dog. stick but it does risk shifting his campaign away from its previous focus on the indictment in 3 corruption cases this plan coming just after the official announcement is indictments are being filed with the true slim district court means that he will he
12:35 am
now has hold of the of the agenda of the narrative and it's certainly something that they want to continue to push the consequences of this deal with its provisions for israeli annexation for the literal walling off of any future palestinian state from the heart of east jerusalem could be felt for years but here in the midst of yet another israeli election campaign the timeline being focused on is much shorter the next 32 days until israelis go to the polls again very force at al-jazeera west jerusalem the palestinians are putting pressure on the u.n. to take action against trump's plan for the middle east palestinian president mahmoud abbas will speak in the security council in the next 2 weeks and the palestinian envoy says he hopes the 15 member group will back a draft resolution on the issue to drag us to negotiate after they steal another 40 percent of the occupied west bank and to negotiate over 4 years
12:36 am
that the tears of that left over in which is the ill has the upper hand and security issues in the hands of. are paramount is not a recipe for peace or justice it is a recipe for the destruction of the national interests of the palestinian people and it will not fly it is not acceptable and those who think that the palestinian people will evaporate they will not those who think that the palestinian people will pack up and leave there will not was to have a secretary general of the palestinian national political party joins me now via skype from ramallah thanks for being with us so aside from the moves at the u.n. is it your impression that actually this plan is stoppable. to tell you of course this plan of course it can be unilaterally implemented by israel which is there is doing already but that doesn't mean there is a deal that doesn't mean that without
12:37 am
a palestinian up over this means nothing it to me is that an occupying power supported by an american administration is committing coalition of international actually what can be described as a war crime in violation of international law and you are his solutions but palestinians will do everything they can to stop it not only a bird rejecting that but also by resolving the internal division trained to create only fire leadership trained up to a new identity of strategy to what has failed which are the negotiations with the israeli side and most important through popular resistance just nighttime is just another just a don't don't ask one quick quick question that was why not though negotiate because at the moment there's been no negotiations with the u.s. from the passenger side since 2017 does that not mean that you've got put yourselves in a worse position because you're not at the table or trying to block these kind of programs can renegotiate about a plan that is determined before we start negotiations the american plan is i was
12:38 am
as is has established certain parameters that cannot be negotiated like it is universal and has to remain unified on the capital of israel that means we have to accept an extension of these genes and before we start negotiating they also confirmed that israel has the right to an external list them 40 percent that was back and we cannot negotiate that they have transformed if you look at graham's plan and map they have transformed occupied today it is into clusters of ghettos and done to stands and we have to accept that it's more than we negotiate or not so they say well gee 'd it's not only as a tribal areas without any it without negotiating with them how do you negotiate with an. allegation when you count can you know anything. not negotiate ins can be productive as long as the united states is the only supervisor of such. a simple fact which is that the united states is not only biased. this administration is in
12:39 am
complete alliance with the most extreme right wing people in the government of israel so who would you know with we would we would negotiate once there is a sort of a it was fit for negotiations with a framework of international confidence when the international community would be present and on the basis of international law and on the basis of you under solutions but if you want my frank opinion no negotiations will be productive unless we change 1st the balance of power between us understood and that's what i mean by popular nonviolent resistance which is very important by inhance into the boycott divestment sanctions against the system of apartheid under conviction and what about than when heard from the hamas leader saying that tennis to be a unified national strategy to end the divisions and you also talked about ending the divisions between palestinians what progress a you making on that and my opinion is that there was a very special day because for the 1st time we had
12:40 am
a meeting that included not only people in the palestinian authority but us who are democratic opposition or other opposition parties in palestine we were all unified we were all there we all agreed on logic to this horrible plan by mr trump and. we all decided to initiate immediately up losses that hopefully will end this internal division their internal division has been. very serious cause of weakness on our side and we must end it and there is no reason why this division should continue tell me about you all regional situation how concerned are you about the countries in the region which in the past have been very supportive is do you feel that they're not as supportive these days of the palestinian cause. well there were no comments that were upset about the fact that sitting on a bus at the clinician of this deal. we don't we think
12:41 am
