a stunning success and whatever the bumps in the road ahead i know that we will succeed we have a bay the will of the people we've taken back the tools of self-government. never before has the e.u. had to do this it hopes it never will have to again experienced only an expansion now the e.u. has taken down a member's flag because it's left europe's leaders want to show that there's little to be gained from this we want to have the best possible relationship with the united kingdom but it will never be as good as membership. to europe and for those who voted the main this is a moment of sadness and in a sign of the constitutional challenges ahead for the u.k. . boosting the coals in scotland for independent study is very very sad and i think what really does though is it shows that there isn't really a future but in and europe and the way that we've enjoyed over the last 3040 years

the impeachment trial against donald trump is scheduled to wrap up on wednesday that's off to the senate voted to block any witnesses from testifying donald trump is all but certain to be a question given the republican majority in the senate. was accused of abuse of power and obstruction of congress for threatening to withhold military aid to ukraine and exchange it for an investigation into his political rival joe biden well since the vote us president donald trump has taken to twitter where he said no matter what you give the democrats in the end they will never be satisfied in the house they gave us nothing castro has more from washington d.c. . democrats say the impeachment trial of president donald trump is the 1st trial in u.s. history without witnesses is this a fair trial without the ability to call witnesses and produce documents the answer is clearly and unequivocally no but despite hours of arguments trying to

convince republican senators to allow new witnesses in the trial the yeas are $49.00 the nays are $51.00 the democrats lost all but 2 republican senators voted no it's a grand tragedy america will remember this day unfortunately where the senate did not live up to its responsibilities where the senate turned away from truth and went along with a sham trial democrats had hoped to get the support of moderate republican lisa murkowski but in the end she rejected the idea saying in a statement i have come to the conclusion that there will be no fair trial in the senate i don't believe the continuation of this process will change anything it is sad for me to admit that as an institution the congress has failed this means the senate jury has essentially sealed its ears to john bolton chum's former national security adviser in his soon to be released book bolton reportedly says trump asked

him to help pressure ukraine for dirt on political opponents and it tied u.s. security aide to the request trump has denied the reports his attorneys argue even if true trump should still not be impeached so this idea that they haven't had witnesses. is that's the smokescreen. you've heard from a lot of witnesses the problem with the case the problem with their position is even with all of those witnesses it doesn't prove. an impeachable offense the articles fail the impeachment trial now nears its end with trump's acquittal all but certain given that republicans hold the majority trumps political fate more likely lies in the hands of american voters who will decide in november whether to give him a 2nd term. castro al-jazeera washington. shows nichols is a political analyst and lecturer at university of maryland college park he joins us

now from washington d.c. thank you so much for your time mr nicholson looks out on wednesday we're going to have this vote very very likely that donald trump will be acquitted how do you see this impeachment drama affecting the upcoming elections in the u.s. . well it is hard to say in some respects but i believe hopefully that the american people will see that this trial was a sham that this president is corrupt that he has made. some mistakes or i would say people make mistakes and some people make choices and i think he's made some very poor choices he has demanded loyalty to senators rather than have them have their loyalty to the united states of america and i hope that they turn against him with their valor their ballots and then they cast ballots in the right direction we see that there are 51 percent of americans voting americans
6:09 am
believe that this president should be removed and i think that that's encouraging given the circumstances but very few republicans have had their minds changed according to polls very few republicans have had their minds changed by this impeachment trial so if indicating that this is this is just continued the polarization what do you think. well again i think that this wasn't about polarization this was about the rule of law so i think that the democrats and the house managers did what they were supposed to do which is oversight that is their role according to the constitution of the united states however you know in terms of polarization we've seen the tweets that the president has sent out about not only democrats but members of congress about people of color about immigrants so if there's anyone that is polarizing the united states of america it's coming from 1600 pennsylvania avenue which is the white house so you know in terms of

how this is going to play out in the election hopefully americans are going to vote pro america and trump. we can't forget that this is and historic time looking ahead to how this might impact things going forward critics say that this is given the american president the green light to overreach in terms of his presidential power what do you think could this set a precedent. oh i see believe kim that it is set a very dangerous precedent not just for this particular president for future presidents from either party to abuse their power to be able to elicit help from foreign nations in order to best the gate rivals and to basically damage the integrity of our election system which we hold so dear and it's something that over

the years we have been trying to perfect there's so many different means we've had years in this country when african-americans like me could not vote when others of other backgrounds can't vote when we've had troubles with our elections and hanging chads and and different issues and we've been trying to get a more secure election system and this president has violated that he has violated the public trust which is an impeachable offense apparently the senate did not want to go through with their responsibilities to remove him hopefully we can do that in an election the white house is apparently. not to publish this book outlining his allegations of what he says he witnessed are you surprised by that. well you know i think that the president of course in the white house is going to try to block anything that comes out at them john bolton did our country

a disservice actually by putting this in a book rather than going to the house of representatives where he was invited to come and give his testimony and instead trying to profit off of this rather the information that he has that is so vital and he could have given this information in december but instead he decides to say ok now i'm ready to tell the world now that my book is going to be published i think it's a little late to claim that he is a patriot i think it's a very sad day for our republic that he's doing this for profit rather than for his love of country i guess the american people will have their say on mass in november for now thank you for that that's jason nichols there political analyst thank you kim. still ahead on al-jazeera 6 more countries are hit with travel restrictions by the u.s. plus. 3 does not have really great power. the

a vote on wednesday. for the number of people killed by the corona virus has risen to 259 after china announced 46 new fatalities many of them minutes who a province the epicenter of the outbreak it comes as the united states says it's banning foreign nationals who've traveled to china in the past 14 days from entering the country a public health emergency has been declared in the u.s. with 7 confirmed cases there american citizens have been in china in the past 2 weeks will also be screened and quarantined for 14 days. the risk of infection for americans remains low and with these and our previous actions we are working to keep the risk low it is likely that we will continue to see more cases in the united states in the coming days and weeks including some limited person to person transmission the american public can be assured the full weight of the u.s.

government is working to safeguard the health and safety of the american people when i is standing by for us in hong kong where there are 13 cases of the crown a virus that thailand has the highest number of confirmed cases outside of china so it's the 1st to alexey o'brien who's in bangkok and actually we're seeing the 1st case of human to human transmission in thailand what's the government doing to try and get a handle on the outbreak there. that's right on friday the 1st case of human to human transmission that's basically when somebody catches the virus from somebody else here in thailand it was announced it was a thai txi driver he hasn't been to china it's thought that he may have picked up the virus when he was carrying chinese tourists here in thailand china is the biggest source of foreign tourists for thailand about 10000000 visitors last year so the government is screening all passengers coming in and out of china it's something that they. have been doing in recent days but they say that there's
6:18 am
actually no need to block all flights coming from china because of the actions taken by the chinese government now some local authorities and a tourist hot spot in our land off the coast they have announced that they are going to be screening about 3 and a half 1000 chinese visitors they going to about $31.00 hotels on the island to check them for any symptoms and to monitor them during their stay and they're just doing that to try and stop the spread of the virus here at thailand's government is also sending a plane to hand to the same tour of the outbreak they're going to be picking up about 60 tie citizens who are there and they will be on the way back it's about a 4 hour flat and also for the next 14 days i'm also interested what are your observations about how people are reacting to the outbreak there is it is it something that you notice when you're when you're out on the street. absolutely am and there's one to wall coverage here on local media it's something
6:19 am
that people are talking about they're interested in it the government advice has been for people to wear a mask when they're out and about and to try and stay away from crowded areas it seems people are listening to that when you're on public transport nearly everybody is wearing a mask there's been a little bit of frustration from people that the government advice hasn't sort of extended beyond you know just wear a mask and don't go to public areas but the government has said that it does believe that the chances of people getting the virus here in thailand is low but that it will not let its guard down there has been a push for some flights to be canceled here the health minister has said that he believes possibly a visa on arrival should end for chinese citizens but of course the tourist minister says no it's too important to maintain the relationship with china so i think that we will see chinese tourists continue to be here but of course everybody trying to do everything that they can to keep themselves safe i think that some mix

here brian there live from bangkok well wayne hey joins us now from hong kong wane the modeling suggests that the numbers are going to get worse before they get better what's the latest in terms of the if it's to contain the virus on the mainland. well it certainly seems the authorities in mainland china are struggling to get on top of this given that those statistics that are announced daily from the national health commission certainly worse than the previous day 46 deaths confirmed on friday and those latest numbers that were announced on saturday morning by the national health commission most of the infections and the fatalities are being recorded in who bay province still that is where it is thought that this outbreak began and certainly there the medical staff a struggling to deal with the sheer number of cases thousands of extra doctors and nurses have been sent to the area from other parts of china but there is still a shortage of medical equipment there in particular the protective suits that those
6:21 am
medical personnel need to wear when dealing with the patients and also test kits and that is partly why many experts outside china are saying that the actual number although infections will be a lot higher than what the chinese government is recording also there is a shortage of hospital beds and that's why everyone is eagerly awaiting the completion of 2 makeshift hospitals that are being built in that provincial capital city we expect those hospitals to be completed within the next week or so and that will mean an extra 2 and a half 1000 hospital beds but this virus is now spread to every single province in territory in china including tianjin in the northeast a long way from who by province but a city that neighbor is the capital of beijing there are 32 confirmed cases intending and the provincial of the local authorities there the local government have announced that they are ordering all schools and non-essential business to remain closed indefinitely so just

a sign of how many other parts of china are going into some form of lockdown as they try to deal with this outbreak thanks that way hey there live from hong kong. now the news the u.s. government has announced immigration restrictions on 6 additional countries citing security concerns acting homeland security secretary chad wolf said the u.s. will suspend visas that can lead to permanent residency for nationals from eritrea kurdistan and nigeria he also said done in tanzania will stop receiving diversity visas that's a process that wards green cards to countries with the immigration to the u.s. gabriel elizondo has more on the homeland security announcement from washington d.c. . well administration officials are saying that in their words it's not a travel ban they're saying it's just travel restrictions it only applies in theory at least they say to a certain group of people that want to come to the united states it would be
6:23 am
citizens of these 6 countries but they say will only apply to immigrant visas for people that from those countries that wanted to move to the united states administration officials are quick to point out that it will not apply they say to people that are applying for student visas or work visas they also say it will not affect any of the citizens currently in the united states from these 6 countries that are legally here on valid visas they're saying it's simply will only affect those that are applying for new visas to immigrate to the united states but that still potentially is a lot of people thousands of people potentially any people from these 6 countries that will be applying from here on out for immigrant visas to the united states with a few exceptions will have those pieces deny ministration officials are saying they're trying to avoid the situation in 2017 and that so-called muslim ban on those 7 come
