iraq protesters fear their movement has been taken over answered another $64.00 people have died from corona virus in the province at the center of the outbreak in china plus an election victory overturns malawi's constitutional court and nullifies the $2900.00 result and orders a rerun. well the race to just sign it it will be the democratic challenger in the embers us presidential election is that underway candidates are facing the 1st big test in iowa the results are seen as an indicator over who will go on to face donald trump in the ember now unlike primaries these are caucuses won by the parties themselves people meets in small gatherings in churches and town halls rather than in official

polling centers the focus is on face to face engagement the caucuses will be held in more than 16 hunt. locations as well as other satellites locations both inside and outside the states the last 4 democrats to win iowa all went on to win the party's nomination so the stakes are high along with their backers this year's candidates have spent nearly $80000000.00 on iowa t.v. and radio ads in the lead up to the votes now we have 2 correspondents covering developments in iowa for you in a moment we'll hear from john hendren news talking with people taking part in the caucus but 1st let's begin alan fischer allen one of the candidates have been doing today that. well the 1st caucuses have already taken place the results of those won't be released until the main results start to come
2:03 am
out for the candidates it's a difficult day what do you do when people are about to vote well for the senators it was really simple they all had to head back to washington there are 4 senators running here in iowa so they've been tied up with the business around the impeachment trial as for the others well they've been doing typical politician things they've been trying to get on as much media as possible are getting people to go out to vote and vote for them they have been shaking hands with people in the streets all across iowa they have been kissing babies patting dogs having coffee just trying to make sure that they can get the tonneau and we're expecting a record turnout here now i've been speaking to one of those candidates is a man by the name of tom styer he's been doing better in the polls over the last few weeks is support is rising but he's looking perhaps at a 4th or 5th place is being his best possible scenario here in iowa the difficulty
2:04 am
of course for many people is that tom star has never held elected office elected office and we know that there are many democrats who don't think that turned out terribly well the last time that the united states voted someone who was new to politics so i asked him could he convince people that he could actually do the job in the white house i believe corporations of better government i think the problem with our government is that it's broken because corporations own it someone who spent 10 years as an outsider beating corporations every single time or someone who is a career politician from inside the beltway why it's working perfectly for people inside the beltway the question is how is it working for the american people and we all know it's not. what i was just so many candidates in these caucuses is there any indication of what sort of result will be licking outs from iowa. course no unusual that you have a large field in iowa this is where they start to win or don't the numbers and by
2:05 am
to morrow a number of people will announce that their presidential campaigns are over because this just simply wasn't the time the big surprise here in iowa would be if bernie sanders didn't when he has been the top of the polls over the last couple of weeks if an exec in very narrowly to hillary clinton 4 years ago he's got a big grown swell of support and certainly he's been attracting the biggest crowds to his rallies across iowa in the last few days particularly over the weekend when he was actually here on saturday and sunday but you don't have to win in iowa to be a winner if you come a good 3rd or a good 4th then there's every possibility that that will give you momentum though you may think that doesn't sound quite possible and let me give you a name bill clinton he finished 4th here in iowa when the polls were putting him down and he dubbed him self the comeback kid and suddenly he's catapulted towards the top of the polls in new hampshire and he goes on to secure the nomination for the democratic party and ultimately won the presidency so we're not just looking at
2:06 am
1st place we get 2nd who gets 3rd we're also looking at 4th and 5th and whether or not people then have viable can penes it's interesting with tom styer because normally you've got to do well to build up a bit of momentum to make sure that your fund raising continues well when you are as rich as tom styer he's a millionaire perhaps even a billionaire then he can sell fund this one campaign and that's exactly what might bloomberg is doing he's not here in iowa didn't get on the ballot soon enough so we're looking at who finishes in the top 3 the likelihood is it's going to be joe biden in there somewhere elizabeth warren possibly bernie sanders there fill in the top 3 and then people and amy clubbish are where did they finish and then they going to go on with the momentum of the comeback kids or is this where the campaigns and certainly everyone says look. we've got campaigns going beyond here into new hampshire next week and so be interesting to see when we start getting the results exactly who is where and what all that means indeed for alan fischer thank
2:07 am
you very much indeed we also have john hendren in des moines forest john you're among the caucus goers a little bit see behind you know you but certainly in iowa what's the atmosphere been like this is quite a crucial caucus season is it not. that's right i mean the drake university basketball arena if you look behind me you can see just a little bit of activity going on this is a caucus in fact it's the biggest caucus in iowa what 121200 people will be gathering here and if you just want to see the beginnings of what's going on i'll ask my cameraman jim to pan over here that is where the democrats come to register by name separated alphabetically of course and then they come in and if you can look behind me here there are sections and here's a sign for tom styer who we've all been talking about this would be the section
2:08 am
where stiers people would sit so what happens if there's a leader somebody gets up and talks and at an event this big sometimes it's the candidate him or herself that comes to plead their case then what happens is they take a vote in that vote people gather together in groups and if you don't have 15 percent that candidate is not viable in this particular precinct so you get rid of them and all of those voters have the opportunity to go to someone else so there's a 2nd vote taken there used to be multiple but this year there are only 2 and there's a complicating factor that this year could make things a little confusing it used to be said that there were 3 tickets out of the iowa caucus the 1st 3 people numerically who won delegates gold silver and bronze will now they're going to announce the winner of that 1st vote the winner of the 2nd vote and the ultimate winner of the delegate count so it's entirely possible that you could have people arguing that they had
2:09 am
a moral victory even if they didn't get the most delegates so this could be an interesting night it's certainly kids and a lot of the the the the caucus goers themselves i mean many of them have been torn really you've been speaking with them what are you getting is the sense from these caucus goers what's more important to them the elects a billet say off the counter to 2020 or just the gusts in states. well i talked to a young man earlier who was undecided i've talked to a number of people who say they're actually coming to the caucuses and this is how this is different and than most other states they're coming to the caucuses to learn to hear from the people the advocates for the candidates or from the candidates themselves and they want to be convinced to vote for a candidate some of them come in with a list of $12.00 or 3 people that they want to vote for well this year the polls suggest that the top 2 vote getters are actually at the polls of the democratic
2:10 am
party on the one hand you've got joe biden who is the establishment candidate and then on the other end you've got bernie sanders self-proclaimed socialist the left most candidate perhaps and those are the 2 who seem to be polling higher under them you've got people to judge and elizabeth warren also representing really a moderate and a more leftist candidate and that seems to be what we're seeing a lot of people are talking a lot about those candidates and it is the activists people like the bernie sanders people who tend to fire people up in iowa and get them to come and vote he had has had a good history here even though we didn't win against hillary clinton so the people we're talking to are excited they're talking about all kinds of candidates and the truth is this is is such an idiosyncratic process that the polls don't necessarily refer reflect what's going to happen so we could see surprises here this evening we saw in the kid john it looks like is shaping up to be an end to signify that's john

even if it happened in the rest of africa most recently it happened in kenya in 2017 when of course they ordered a rerun off that election was found to have told many irregularities but right now this evening of course it's a way to the how people are going to react supporters of the wedding party and supported the opposition we know they plan to be celebrations tonight into tomorrow tuesday from the opposition people waiting to hear reaction from the ruling party and what the way forward for them is going to be next at least 14 children have been killed in a stampede at a primary school in western kenya 40 of the students have been seriously injured for they said stampede happens when panic broke writes the students were leaving school it's unclear what calls the panic investigation is underway. israel has announced it will begin to normalize relations with sudan and uganda it feels amazing between prime minister binyamin netanyahu uganda's president and the has of

sudan's transitional military council or so. on well sudan has been trying to change its image in the country's international investments since the overthrow of longtime leader omar al bashir our faucets in west jerusalem he says this is part of a wider strategy by the israeli leader. well the word from israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu is pretty celebrate 3 he says that they've agreed to start a cooperation that will lead towards normalization not a normalization of relations between sudan and israel and he calls that history it is part of a wider strategy both in africa and in the middle east to try to get friendly relations going with majority muslim and arab nations in the region and of course it comes very soon after the trump plan which was released last week
2:36 am
which attracted at least not immediate arab state condemnation of course there was a rejection of that plan at the weekend and so there has been a slowing down of the provisions in that plan for potential annexation of the occupied west bank something that netanyahu had hoped to start moving on in this past weekend so it is about time given the fact that he's in the midst of an election campaign for another major foreign policy announcement of this one serves netanyahu very well it also serves sudan to some extent that the leader of sudan's been invited to washington so there's a recommendation from israel. as far as the prime minister's office is concerned sudan is moving in a positive a positive direction away from iranian influence and also potentially provide something more practical for israel as well for air space over sudan would make it much easier for israeli flights to fly directly to south america where there is
