did the initial do it in. the in the. donald trump ailes the great american comeback at a prime time state of the union address to the nation. well a country is thriving. and highly respected again. but that's not what the democrats think speaker nancy pelosi is seen tearing up a copy of his speech. on how magazine and this is al-jazeera my from doha also coming up u.s. president says the country should be a sanctuary for law abiding americans a nazi in his words criminal aliens. and among the guests of honor venezuela's one

white dove trump calls him the country's true and legitimate leader also on the program. it will be easy to bring in the new the. e.p.a. to church leaders in iowa are partial results are announced in the democratic caucus after a day of chaos. while on the eve of a vote expected to acquits the u.s. president's all of his impeachment to donald trump has come face to face with democrats who've been seeking to oust him from office is just given his state of the union address in the house of representatives the same chamber which he was in pain just last month or head of the speech there was an awkward moments with house speaker nancy pelosi will support the charges of abuse of power abuse of power and which actually can come. as against trump and he appeared to turn away from her and
7:02 am
she extended his her hands when later nancy pelosi was seen tearing up a copy of trump's speech soon as the hour and a half long address had wrapped up he made no mention of toll of his impeachment cheering that address and stats trump uses 3rd state of the union as a rallying cry ahead of the november election speech was titled the great american comeback we concentrated on the economy jobs and health care or if we had and reverse the failed economic policies of the previous administration the world would not now be witnessing this great economic success. i heard trump ross in a surprise guest venezuelan opposition leader on go i don't know and spoke about standing in solidarity with the venezuelan people but maduro's grip and theory will

be smashed and broken here this evening so a very brave man. who carries with him the hopes dreams and aspirations of all that is whelan's joining us in the gallery is the true and legitimate president of venezuela one boy. who stood close to you. right. now in trouble spoke about the u.s. assassination of so preening commander cost some money he said so the money was targeted because he was planning new attacks against americans. our message to the kurds to screw you will never escape american justice if you attack our citizens you for free your life. while our white house correspondent kimberly hall because his life is on capitol hill i can't believe we're both watching that speech there before we get on to the symbolism of which
7:04 am
there was plenty just give us the main takeaways of the speech for you what did you find significance in that. there are 2 things number one that no matter how much the president tried to avoid impeachment and the fact that he has been impeached. it looms large in that chamber whether we saw it at the beginning with the house speaker nancy pelosi when he snubbed her as she exchanged the speech she extended her hand he rejected it to the tearing of the speech by nancy pelosi at the end it is all that people are talking about in this room right now the other big takeaway from listening to the president's speeches while he appeared very presidential it was teleprompter trump not twitter trump railing at his opponents what we saw there was the sensually the themes of his upcoming reelection campaign he believes that immigration while to visit in this country is something that he is
7:05 am
going to continue to make the case for whether it be cutting down on illegal crossings the fact that he has not fulfilled his promise about. building a border wall but still talking about the intention to do so he also is touting what he sees as some successes and there's 'd no question that even some democrats would agree with regard to the renegotiating certain trade deals like nafta to the u.s. m.c.a. that was a bipartisan success this is something that donald trump is talking about but where there are differences and i think we're really starting to see this is in the area of what we call me united states the kitchen table issues donald trump very much trying to make this a cornerstone of his campaign touting that he believes the low unemployment is a significant success what we're likely to see from his democratic critics is the argument that yes there are jobs but the wages are stagnant and that is something that we heard in that democratic response a bit of a touch on so overall that the themes of these speeches really the big headline
7:06 am
here this impeachment loomed large but also that donald trump is very much out of the gate in terms of his reelection efforts he certainly is the economy it was a big talking point immigration these were all key knows that are safe to say we're going to hear quite a lot of in this upcoming election campaign we even heard chance of us seeing us see in 4 more years i mean is this the campaigns already owns ways that no. absolutely and look at. what we have to acknowledge once again and we saw that very vividly in the chamber throughout the applause lines only half of the room was standing up this remains a very divided country donald trump is a polarizing president there is no in between most people like his policies or don't like his policies in fact some that like his policies don't particularly like
7:07 am
him but like the results of those policies this is something that donald trump's point have to work very hard on another thing he's going to have to work very hard on is reaching out to many people that feel that his policies are for them voters of color and we saw that in quite pointedly whether it was a super bowl ad that took place for the biggest football game in the united states on sunday or whether it was in this speech where the president acknowledged a number of guests who were individuals of color he believes have benefited from his policies or even what he believes he's done for historically black colleges and universities even the low unemployment in certain targeted demographics voters of color if this is something that the president really seem to be focusing on and it knowledge is the reality that he has a problem in this area if he's going to win the white house he's going to need those voters on his side right now i think the acknowledgment by this president as
7:08 am
he launches his reelection effort is that he doesn't have them on his side right now indeed for my we're going to thank you very much indeed for trying to close and see what the democrats have been saying after trying to see the union gretchen whitmer was the person to delivering the democratic rebuff so to president trump state of the union address she's the governor of michigan that's a key swing states in the upcoming presidential election and in her speech she criticized from stumbling over the economy. doesn't matter what the president says about the stock market what matters is that millions of people struggle to get by or don't have enough money at the end of the month after paying for transportation student loans or prescription drugs american workers are hurting in my own state our neighbors in wisconsin and ohio pennsylvania and all over the country wages have stagnated while c.e.o.
7:09 am
pay has skyrocketed so when the president says the economy is strong my question is strong for hope what with the senate expected to acquits president trump in the impeachment trial there also asked americans to judge senators on what they do as we witness the impeachment process in washington there are some things each of us no matter our party should demand the truth matters facts matter and no one should be above the law it's not what those senators say tomorrow it's about what they do that matters. more on this and i found out it plumber he's a democratic strategist and joins us now live from washington d.c. good to have you with us here on al-jazeera. i was going to ask you about the democratic reaction to president trump's speech but i think speaker pelosi got there ahead of you by tearing up the speech at the end i mean that speaking volumes
7:10 am
there. it is i mean i think with this particular state of the union we saw a very very different atmosphere whether it was president trump not extending his hand to the speaker or the speaker you know i think motioning throughout this speech her disapproval as well as tearing up the speech at the end it was a speech that was full of theatrical i think a lot of it hollow but there are areas where there was you know bipartisan support really was around those stories of those americans who have made sacrifices and or are benefiting from the actions of democrats as well as republicans said jesse talk about the reaction to the white house is already it's a reaction to speaker pelosi there and pointed out that that speech that she tore up includes those actions of ordinary americans the guests the president drum. that he did invite it there that's the child who was born at 21 weeks and survived the.
7:11 am
the veterans the military veterans and all this is so not a worry that by appearing so disrespectful americans might turn against the democrats for reacting in that way. i don't think so one if you noticed the moment when you saw bipartisan applause from both democrats and republicans were around those american merican moments if you will whether it was the african-american woman and her child are going to receive that scholarship you know i would say that say for the moment related to the very controversial figure rush limbaugh i think you saw the speaker pelosi and democrats really applauding those americans that i think trump really tried to exploit as part of his speech i think when one looks at his record you know what trump did throughout his speech was really pepper in off the pepper authentic stories of americans with things that just weren't true you know the president has tried to take credit for things that
7:12 am
he just did not do he is. quite frankly live and been this honest about the impact of his policies whether we're talking about the growth that we have not seen compared to president obama whether we're talking about the number of jobs that were created compared to obama and president trump or whether we're even talking about the african-american unemployment rate which we saw decreased dramatically under president obama and his slow down under president trump and so present trump has made a number of promises i will say that he tried to you know speak to what he said were his promises but i think many americans saw through that it was a dark speech it turns it was a speech that i don't think spoke to the reality of his policies and the impact that he has had more over i think those that have benefited under this president have been those who have generally benefited in general so you know those americans are actually able to afford to invest in the stock market etc well we have to wait
7:13 am
and see what the if the american be i'm sorry so that will be but of course there were a lot of feel good moment say that speech where it's not simply when when he was reaching out to see the guests the ordinary americans who were who were invited. there and present jobs good salesman he tells a very good story he talks about how he's supporting the economy supporting blue collar workers he's determined to end the specter of socialism and how care and these are things that it's seems almost like he's trying to take the democrats calls on a lot of these policies a month that we know about president trump is a good salesman it is sells it very very well you know worried that the republicans are going after your issues and someone like trump is actually appealing to the kind of blue collar core democratic voters if you don't have the right inverted commas nominee you may well be seeing many more states of the unions for president trump. well one i do think this is going to be the last day that you know address
7:14 am
that we see from president trump to i would also say that you know when you look at his his polling numbers he has not expanded his base if anything he solidified his base and his policies have not tried to expand to independents and to democrats so when you look at presidents in the past what they've done is they've actually implemented policies and have tried to speak to all americans what you saw tonight was president trump really speaking to his base the fact that you saw you know g.o.p. members of congress chanting 4 more years in usa i mean those are things you generally see at a state of the union and again you know red meat to his base the rush limbaugh you know photo not not not know what they're going to get a presidential medal when the white house released a press release so what i would say is that americans are generally seeing through president trump they have he's never been positive in terms of polling and i think
7:15 am
what we're going to see in 2020 is a very very spirited race on both sides but i do think that americans are exhausted by what they've seen from this president they're exhausted by it's not just how he does the work that he does whether it's tweeting but i think they're also exhausted by the business that we've seen from this president this is not been a president who's trying to bring americans together and that's unfortunate ok well some good use for people who are exhausted but it's had to break. i will have to thank you very much indeed for sharing your thoughts and your analysis here on al-jazeera. do you say whether here will have bring you the unlucky american reaction don't trump calling venezuela's opposition leader at the president's in his state of the union address and in other news china admits shortcomings in its response to the coronavirus site break from com reported its 1st stephan macau shuts down all of its casinos would be back after this.
7:16 am
hello once again welcome to look at the international forecasts it's a looking pretty quiet across the middle east at the moment look further north i've got lots of cloud that's just piling it's way out sists move out of the way here you can see because i'm a very choppy waters through there is a sort of the mediterranean sea greece turkey cyprus seeing some very wet some very windy and at times some wintry weather over the next day or so and that will gradually ease over towards the levant as we push on through the remainder of this week so let's set the scene for what's going to coming through as we go on through the weekend ahead of that is not bad at all you might just catch your chance to central parts of saudi arabia card without the possibility of the odd chance of central and southern areas of the red sea and across the other side of the red sea
7:17 am
as well you might get the odd shower little puffs of cloud the coming into ethiopia but the west the weather is going to be across central parts of africa through the tropics as a ship basis and big downpours there possibility into uganda maybe western parts of kenya could see some largish as northern areas of tanzania certainly with a chance of seeing some rather lively shall is no showers trash all the way across into angola still a child so they are shown to the northern parts of madagascar over the next couple of days to the south of that is slightly dry. when is the last time you were out on the streets protesting whether on line you feel the weight of the system we do walk through each and every leg with or layer further and further into the jail or if you join us on say retention has to start from day one whether again you're in detention or you're incarcerated this is a dialogue everyone has

a voice so far there are studies that support our coverage will be varying accounts but i want to give people the reason for joining the global conversation amount is iraq. this is al jazeera of the top story this hour on the eve of a vote expected to acquits the u.s. president of his impeachment donald trump has given his 3rd state of the union address to use the occasion to drum up support ahead of the november election concentrating on the economy jobs and health care. while he made to mention office impeachment there were several awkward moments and house speaker nancy pelosi she

was seen tearing up a copy of trump's speech soon as he had finished. and one of the more notable points in the states of union was the appearance of fairness whale is why i'm going to latin america and so the syrian human joins us now live from santiago in syria he was referred to as the president of venezuela this was a surprise was it not hers that likely to be received where you are. was certainly had was not expected in fact the invitation to attend the state of the union address wasn't even confirmed until it just took just a very very short time before it actually happened and what is also very notable was the expression on quango why those face he was extremely stern and i would venture to say that the reason is that he has felt snubbed by president trouble up until now remember that there was a highly anticipated meeting that was supposed to take place are expected to take
7:20 am
place in florida in miami over the weekend not only that it not take place but the president went to his retreat at dieppe. play golf instead did not invite why they all there did not invite him to the white house and and this certainly was seen as i say as a snub at the same time of course president trump probably did not want to draw too much attention to it has clearly become a foreign policy failure at least so far with regard to venezuela so at least one by law can go home and it's expected he will go do that very very shortly with this invitation under his sleeves he also takes with him by lots of will support from congress that was one of the 1st moments of bilateral support when he was when he was the 9th in the chamber and even this will be him when he returns to venezuela which will come sometime this week probably violating
7:21 am
a court order forbidding and leave the country. exactly i think that this was very significant in that sense and as you say he received 2 standing ovations from both sides of the floor and that is sending a very very clear message to them i would a government that president trump continues to stand behind the law despite appearances earlier in the week and also that there could very well be consequences of anything happens to him remember that more and more opposition leaders have been imprisoned and sent into exile why the law has been isolated more and more president maduro has pretty much taken over the national assembly which was the only institution that was independent and controlled by the opposition so he will need this kind of very very overt support from both sides of the of the house of congress to send that kind of message again that there could be consequences if he is harmed in any way. ok see in human life or as in sons here go for it thank you

very much. well let's stay with us politics and the democratic party's apologized after technical delays meant and sequins 24 hours for partial results from their course a caucus to be at least. marginally ahead of bernie sanders of the both are claiming victory own fisher reports now from des moines. for the democratic campaigns iowa is already in the rearview mirror they've moved on that in new hampshire the next step in this process. from iowa new problem. each candidate is telling everyone what a huge success they've been even if it looks like they've struggled where it. is a good. thing her are really doing well. in des moines an apology from the democratic

party chairman that the system to count votes at the caucuses failed so spectacularly but he insists the results no being published can be trusted we have been working day and night to make sure that these results are accurate the one thing i will say is that the underlying data the raw data is secure it was always secure conspiracy theorists online are suggesting the result is being manipulated that's not something bernie sanders is buying into you know there's no excuse for not having results but it's like oh but that doesn't mean to say but the votes at the polls like comment will be an awkward and i think that's an unfair thing to try to do the youngest candidate in the race former mayor people to judge is performing ahead of predictions and expectations but he's already looking forward to a similar result in new hampshire this weekend or this tuesday this is we can. this

this is your decision. i have no more times than an argument she promises for the failure and i want to deliver results quickly and clearly has amplified calls to drop the state as the 1st in the nation to vote in the presidential process but one experience political observer says there's no obvious solution that does not mean that there rest of the nation will come up with the alternative that everybody can agree on new hampshire has a primary so that straight up election style voter the next state to hold a caucus is nevada later this month the democratic party there has already said it won't be using the system they used here in iowa alan fischer al-jazeera the morning. authorities in the chinese city of one hand say they're converting an additional 8 spilled ins into hospitals to treat patients suspected of having corona virus a source of 11 buildings will has 10000 people at least 490 people have died in

china and nearly $25000.00 are now infected that includes 10 you cases on a cruise ship under lockdown in japan well the world health organization says the corona virus outbreak is showing no signs of mutation and has not caused a pandemic when you deal with epidemic. rapidly sees that in addition to the epidemic of diseases we often have an epitome of information and this is what we call in for demick and it's really an e.p. dimmick of rumors of false information that is circulating at the same time and every outbreak as it's in full demick and so we have realized over time that for them it could be really they call for a good response and hamper effective implementation of countermeasures. well peter j. who it says is a professor the baylor college of medicine he says any sort of vaccine will still
7:26 am
be at least months away the actual technology to develop a vaccine against this virus may not be so challenging because it's relatively straightforward we have to prevent the binding of the virus to its host receptor in the long and there are several different technologies that you could use to do that the issue is with coronaviruses we know there's a particular problem as with some other respiratory virus vaccines in some cases the vaccine can make things worse and so this phenomena known as an a body dependent and handsome and so we've got to really do careful safety testing to make sure that doesn't happen our vaccine does not seem to do that and laboratory animals but now we've got to confirm that in people so it's not a quick fix it's going to take a few months to to do that so we'll see how this plays out there's a lot of variables that are in place right now another is the seasonality of these coronaviruses historically coronaviruses tend to peak in winter then they've
7:27 am
declined precipitously in the spring and summer months so that's a possible scenario that could play out as well at least in the northern hemisphere so the world health organization is not the clear this a pandemic just yet because there's not sustained transmission and multiple countries but we're getting really close so we'll have to see how that pans out as well draft wording for a u.n. resolution seen by al-jazeera calls the u.s. president's proposal to solve the palestinian conflict a breach of international law the plan which was unveiled by donald trump last week and those his rule to annex last poets' of palestinian lands or diplomatic answer james bass has more from u.n. headquarters in new york. the pushback against the trump plan on the middle east has begun here at the united nations i've seen wording for a draft resolution for the security council drawn up by the palestinians by tunisia the current arab member of the council and by another security council member in

than easier the wording is says the base strongly regret the fact that the trump plan is a breach of international law that's very strong wording and it's very interesting i was told earlier by an arab diplomat but they didn't want to criticize directly the trump plan because they wanted to get their support for this resolution from 2 permanent members the u.k. and france the palestinian ambassador has made it clear he already knows how the u.s. is going to vote we know it will be defeated by a veto but we want to show that the international community is reflecting the same position. by all of us and articulated by the secretary general today again as he articulated that days ago when this very bad plan. announced in washington d.c.
