years of economic to carry are over. president trump boasts of a great american comeback in a state of the union address that underlined the defining political division. the democrats weren't impressed house speaker nancy pelosi tore up the transcript after he appeared to refuse to shake her hand. malawi's president says he'll appeal against a court decision that are now old his controversial reelection last year. i'm joining us there with the sports tokyo olympic organizers say they are seriously worried about the coronavirus outbreak impacting this year's games. there was started out as a rescue mission on a mountainside in eastern turkey has now turned into
4:02 pm
a frantic search for the rescuers themselves at least 23 p. . will have been killed after 2 avalanches swept down on to a road near the city of van some of those killed were part of a rescue team they'd been sent in defined survivors after the 1st avalanche on to see night when told to our correspondent. who's life for a sin is stumble and hashim such tragic circumstances 2 separate avalanches and now those who've been sent in to help being sought after themselves. very tragic situation in deed in but just how i distract martine the rescuers who are in the midst of a frantic operation to retrieve the missing of those who were trapped under the snow earlier today were also trapped when a 2nd laws hit the area this explains the huge number of the people who were.
4:03 pm
themselves and this explains the death toll which has been climbed being dramatically over the last few hours we're talking about $23.00 people dead and we're talking also about dozens of people still trapped under the snow it all started yesterday martin when the another launch hit the area which is surrounded by massive mountains with a passenger bus and a snow clearing vehicle and at that time yesterday about 5 people were killed in that village and many rescuers were sent to the area to try to help with the rescue operation civilians also took part in the rescue operation but in the midst of the frantic search for survivors the 2nd head and this explains the tragic situation where many people found themselves in the authorities are saying that they are
4:04 pm
sending many ambulances many rescuers frantic addressed to you is underway as we speak of the thing the authorities are trying to retrieve all those still trapped be. under the you know within the coming hours the biggest concerns though martin remains the blizzards of the heavy snowfalls falls in those areas as we speak and this could just slow the rescue operation for hours to come and hashim you said that this is a particularly mountainous area to the east of the country what kind of level of preparedness would you expect there for is this weather particularly severe or is this the kind of weather that they normally have at this time of year. it's it's an extreme weather condition and weather forecasts have been talking about the past few weeks about heavy snow forced to hit particularly the north is some parts of the country particularly the province or violent but they were not
4:05 pm
bracing for something similar to what happened over the last few days particularly the last 24 hours you know one of the reason why this has been exacerbated is because the passages are very narrow surrounded by massive mountains and most of the roads leading to the. to the area have been closed now the rest 2 were suddenly found themselves and the mounting pressure. to go after those trapped and under the snow and they were later joined by civilians and in the frantic search that happened suddenly the 2nd avalanche hit the area now for the rescue operations to be sent to those areas it takes quite some time and with the heavy snow falls and with the blizzard has taken place in those areas this has compound of the whole rescue operation the government is saying that it is doing all the necessary measures to try to save whoever is trapped and the.
4:06 pm
thing if you look at what's happening over the last 3 hours we talk about more casualties which explains that it seems that most of the people who were trapped in the 2nd. may have lost their lives and we're expecting that sort of climb in the coming hours right hashem thank you very much for the very latest from istanbul . right now hong kong is to begin current inning all of those coming from mainland china as it tries to stop the spread of corona virus the territories leaders announced it will place anyone who crosses the border into isolation for 2 weeks hong kong is already quarantined a ship that sailed enough to having been turned away by taiwan japan has done the same with the cruise liner that was carrying 3700 people there been 10 confirmed cases on that ship and it remains in the harbor of york or harm or no one to say
4:07 pm
china saw its largest spike in deaths from the virus 65 in a single day and that brings the total number of dead to at least 490 that while evacuations continue in who bay province that's of course the center of the outbreak on wednesday. flew out 84 of its citizens and they were immediately put under quarantine but we can talk to adrian brown our correspondent to is live in the hong kong adrian 1st will tell us about that ship the cruise liner that was turned away by taiwan and has been placed in lockdown by the hong kong authorities . that's right the odyssey of the dream world across the south china sea is now out and then seen that vessel is going nowhere the crew and passengers on board the vessel we're told by the cruise operators about 3600 in total remain now in effective lock down now this vessel arrived on wednesday
4:08 pm
morning and it was just after the vessel arrived at the authorities in the mainland contacted their counterparts in hong kong to say that 3 passengers who'd been on a previous forage on this same vessel had now tested positive for the virus it was in that hong kong said well we now know that 200 passengers left that vessel after that previous floyd on january the 24th now the search is now on to find them that should be quite easy if they're stood in hong kong because everyone here has to have an i.d. card now we know that all the passengers and crew on board the vessel are now undergoing checks at least 3 crewmembers are now in isolation in a nearby hospital and i think it's fair to assume that in the current climate that the crew and passengers are going to remain in quarantine now that carry land has made this dramatic announcement of these draconian measures that are going to come into force and what it means as you pointed out marty is that life is going to be
4:09 pm
severely disrupted for the up to $100000.00 hong kong people who have been commuting every day across the border into the nearby city of shenzhen and of course that's raising fears over over jobs at a very difficult time for hong kong now carol lam has effectively now sealed the front here with the mainland because anyone coming into hong kong is not going to go into isolation for 14 days but she is going to enforce this new measure on saturday to give all those people time as i say to prepare adrian brown live in hong kong thank you very much indeed well al-jazeera scott. sideline has been speaking to one particular family from shanghai they're currently stuck in and because they're not able to leave let's hear what he found out. trying to make the best of the lockdown. and his family

since. this is the 1st schools photos to show the empty streets of will haunt but the shelves in the supermarkets are not supplies he said are being brought in by the military like on the big concern for the central government here in beijing is increasing the medical capacity for the growing number of infected in the province more beds for the ill and more supplies for those treating them large gymnasiums in an exhibition center have been converted into makeshift hospitals in melbourne. along with the 2 new hospitals built for the corona virus completed this week there are now more than 6500 new beds for those infected but with the spread of the virus and these new beds barely cover the increase of confirmed new cases it will be a problem from just the last week scott holler al-jazeera beijing well it's perhaps not surprising that the economic impact of this corona virus is already being felt across the world in thailand for instance there are fears it could cost the tourism industry more than a $1000000000.00 most foreign tourists to thailand come from china but numbers of

brightest young stars the teacher it's. supposed to be a moment when the u.s. comes together but donald trump state of the union addresses instead emphasize the disunity in american politics he came face to face with the democrats who impeached him in the house of representatives a subject he completely avoided instead he used his speech to relaunch his election campaign patty culhane reports from washington. not at stake. the president of the united states was a u.s. president impeached by the house walking in to face the full congress expected the senate will vote down the charges against him in the coming hours was was the chants from the republicans in the chamber made it clear what this speech would be
4:16 pm
about his reelection the state of our union is stronger than ever before was the democratic response was this obvious there out but for the president he saw this as his time to herald what he sees as his accomplishments this is a blue collar boom was but many of his due to sticks were overblown out of context or simply untrue as with many other promises in this speech i have also made an ironclad pledge to american families we will always protect patients with preexisting condition was his administration is actually in court trying to get some of those protections removed and his administration has rolled back most efforts to combat climate change but the president made this promise to protect the environment days ago i announced that the united states will join the one trillion trees an initiative an ambitious effort. in the democratic
4:17 pm
response some subtle attacks but they mostly focused on promoting their agenda it's pretty simple democrats are trying to make your health care better republicans in washington are trying to take it away but this speech will be remembered less for the substance than for the made for t.v. moments highlighting the president's past as a former television reality star he surprised the chamber by inviting one why don't know venezuela's opposition leader please take his message back all americans are united with the venezuelan people in their righteous struggle for freedom thank you very much for. he had his wife present the presidential medal of freedom to an ellen conservative radio host and highlighted the family of a deployed soldier only to reveal he had come home. this was a night for symbolism planned and unprompted as he entered to give
4:18 pm
a speech the president seemed to refused to shake the hand of the speaker of the house and as it ended she sent her own message about what she thought of the speech the tension on full display the president departed making it clear he will fight to be back here next year and the opposition party will fight just as hard to make sure this will be his last party call him al jazeera washington all right let's go to our white house correspondent kelly haokip now who's there in washington for us to believe you've ever seen anything like that before the president refusing to shake the hand of the house speaker and then the house speaker tearing up the speech at the end of it. i haven't seen anything before like that before and neither have most americans i think this just really underscores not only how divided the nation is but how angry the nation is there it
4:19 pm
was on full display this was a highly partisan speech to a divided congress that was shown repeatedly it was split screen moment where half of the. house of representatives was standing while the other half was sitting down nancy pelosi is getting a lot of pushback on the fact that she tore up that speech it is trending in a number of different ways on social media she has pushed back for her part on her actions in fact she said shortly afterwards when that moment was captured on television screens that it was the most courteous thing to do considering the alternative it was such a dirty speech what i think we can take from all of this martine is the tone in the tenor of the election campaign all the way to november is going to be very divided very angry very dirty and in the midst of all of this to fight despite the fact that donald trump's speech was unabashedly partisan we have to remember that his poll numbers seem to be going up in fact they're the highest they've ever been so
4:20 pm
the president seems to have been able to strike a chord in the midst of all of this even as some americans are feeling utter disgust at what they've seen on display in the house of representatives and meanwhile committee of course we're just a few hours away from what we expect to be an acquittal for the president in the senate as they vote finally on the impeachment trial so it's basically donald trump's. can do what he likes pretty much and now as he starts to limber up ready for november 2020. he definitely is flexing his muscle because you have to remember he's going into this vote knowing that he's likely to be acquitted that seems to be the way the votes are going into this we always have to keep in mind there may be one more surprise we've seen a lot of them in the last few days but essentially the president is likely to do a victory lap in fact the white house has said that to expect some sort of response
4:21 pm
after this vote comes down i think what we have in all of this is a lot of drama and expect that the other side is going to have drama to the democrats are angry that they were not able to make the case to the american public so we're also watching very carefully to see what the top democrat in the u.s. senate chuck schumer will say he is expected to make a speech just before that all important vote that is set to come down at 21 g.m.t. we'll get back to me a little later kimberly thank you very much indeed well now we can speak to our senior for the school analyst he's joining us live from london mowen be interesting to hear what your thoughts are about this particular moment in american politics. we're clearly as we've heard it's quite a divisive moment and it's a decisive moment as well especially in an election year the country is going
4:22 pm
through or a cultural war is going through a political war if you will so much so that the theatricals in the in the in the u.s. congress reflect the mood of the country in general so polarized so bitter so much in disagreement on every single possible issue with the exception of and this is really the only in america thing martin which is a so-called applause lines there are certain applause lines that are made by presidents during state of the union speech that are meant for everyone to stand and applaud like on that in the military for example right but aside from that aside from the issues that there has always been historically consensus about most of the issues of the day most of the important issues facing americans from the economy to health to immigration to the environment to justice and the legal
4:23 pm
justice and so on so forth they are divided and they are bitterly divided and on the issue of foreign affairs not much was said he did obviously introduce with a great deal of fanfare. of venezuela and so on but there was scant mention of foreign affairs should we be seeing this is the era the trump era as one of us disengagement. it certainly is specially in an election years but i would say that beyond speeches and rhetoric clearly the united states is involved if you watched secretary pompei of the recent trips in asia the middle east africa and elsewhere you would notice that america is and is in fact engaged and america wants to make sure that china remains contained even russia i would say remains contained and certainly in the middle east they've just pushed in 20000 more soldiers even when president from talks about america does not want to get involved
4:24 pm
in never ending wars of the middle east and yet he dispatches 20000 extra soldiers to the region but if you were sitting a london like one foreign affairs editor tweeted today as something about it's too bad i stayed up all night there's nothing on foreign affairs well if you are in europe and the middle east you probably want beasts staying up because in most of europe africa the middle east and much of asia in fact this is late hours of the night and early hours of the morning probably no one is watching but be that as it may this president is focused on the economy is focused on domestic issues because this is an election year and he knows unless another big issue like an impeachment hits him he's going to have to remain focused on domestic affairs meaghan thank you very much indeed no on this share of that our special. this political analyst

talking to us live from london thank you the hundreds of people have been airlifted to safety have to turn to rain cause flooding in new zealand south island they've been downpours in southern areas for days now around 500 tourists were rescued from the remote milford sound region after rejects this was cut off rivers a river flowing the powerless down civil defense has declared a state of emergency. hi perfect timing now for the weather his role yes is follow him from that it's summer of course to new zealand so this rain damaged maybe isn't expected but you've just seen some of the video and it's at the south ounce affected milford sound highway was cut off by the imaginary in that that fellow of course that means there are people to be rescued here but this is on the northern side of the arm and the amount of rain that fell in the cave on the last system went south as well so much of science and with the overflowed river is also affected and you just heard people having to be rescued power is still out
4:26 pm
across a few people now the good news from this point of view is the rain has effectively stopped so we can leave new zealand in the safety of knowing that there's no real problem there and then we go to australia now it's possible look at something similar here i know that seems that do mongering but look at the amount of caterpillar with lightning bolts are there has been an awful lot of rain recently recent new south wales there in queens and the orange hops on the full cost of what looked like big thunderstorms in the scale anyway but the thing is although they're coming down from queens and into new south wales in the next day or so they'll head them toward sydney and they're slow moving one of the scenario is from this is your development of tropical low not far away from sydney now if that happens the rain will be enhanced significantly so the potential for the rainfall for the next 3 or 4 days anywhere from queens down the new south wales coast including possibly cities to give another $400.00 millimeters of rain again this is summer for them to
4:27 pm
be the rain is flash but it's damaged territory this is the worst case scenario of course the good news is that the rain is wanted a nice feather in that nazi. thank you very much indeed those want to come here in the al-jazeera news and reading standing in solidarity why files of pakistan is holding hands to protest. tax evasion money laundering and bribery accusations malaysians hear about the considerable influence wielded by former 1st lady. and rugby player israel folau speaks for the 1st time since coming off the sidelines following his homophobic social media rant. frank assessments the one good thing about these. really wiping out the culture of

all right let's have a look at the top stories here on the news or least 23 people have been killed after 2 of a largely swept onto a road in eastern turkey some of those killed were part of a rescue team sent to define the survivors from the 1st avalanche on tuesday night hong kong will begin to quarantine anyone who comes in from the mainland for any sign of the corona virus and a cruise ship is on the town in the territory as the authorities test of. president trump has hailed what he calls the great american comeback in his state of the union address the focus on the economy and on jobs but he made no mention of
4:30 pm
wednesday's impending impeachment vote to. allow its president is to appeal against a call drooling which overturned his re-election peter military career now really won a 2nd term last year but months of protests followed over accusations a very tricky thing then on monday judges and the result saying it had been compromised by irregularities they ordered a new election within 5 months the president's spokesman called the decision a miscarriage of justice well peter fabricio says a consultant at the institute for security studies in johannesburg and he told me the coup truly is a major boost for fair elections in malawi. it does send a very strong message that the rule of law can be upheld it's not completely unprecedented in africa it happened in kenya in 2017 but it's pretty rare and the electoral board has come out pretty badly in this i mean it the judgment suggests
4:31 pm
that there was just a temporary you know i think this is going to become remembered in history as the typical election because according to the court judgement over half a 1000000 vote results were altered by to pick and i think nobody really knows in this case knew in advance whether the judiciary would be up to it and likewise if we look back at the the president and kenya 3 years nearly 3 years ago there was a big question marks over the court and in fact off to that that judgment in the election in august that you hold the legal system seem to somewhat implode and the next you know the runoff election then was a complete mess and opposition boycotted it so there are concerns here that. that as in kenya the executive may 1 way or another find a route to to effectively neutralized this result but but so far so good you know it's there it's it's residing judgment in favor of the nor the rule of law
4:32 pm
and one can only hope that it's sustained i don't know what the basis for the appeal would be to be honest. that's how he's president try to have time better one has threatened further action against the syrian government if its forces in if they don't pull back the announcement came 2 days after 7 turkish soldiers and one civilian were killed by government shelling in rebel held it live province the turkish military says it's dozens of syrian government targets and killed many troops in them cause you know who is in hatay province by the syrian border and says turkey is now showing a new strategy. this is probably the harshest message from president are gone so far and who has been claiming that turkey is supporting a diplomatic solution a political solution in syria out despite the threats coming from inside syria to turkey's border security that's why turkey has been involved in some processes like
4:33 pm
our sun and sochi agreements that that actually led to this collision zone and that a but today we are saying that president obama's showing a change of turkey's policy or a new strategy in northwestern syria is the main the so far. a cording to the sun and sochi agreement you know turkey had 12 observation poles along with the russian and iranian observation post but not and they have been only with the military personnel over there has been only on the observation mission but now we see it transform a ship because since the syrian government as advance from south to north take is gaining more territory down below the m $4.00 and $5.00 highway and at that turkey has been sending reinforcements it to strengthen its military observation force and just 2 days ago one of them was attacked and there are soldiers that have been
4:34 pm
killed which is a very tough situation for turkey that's why it seems president ad dawn is happy and satisfied with the reinforcements that have been deployed inside that so far. now going back to the u.s. and it was meant to be the 1st opportunity for voters to pick their democratic presidential choice for the upcoming election but it took almost 24 hours for partial results not even all of them to come from the our caucus to be released but they put pete put it. marginally ahead of bernie sanders although both of them are claiming victory alan fischer reports out in the state capital des moines. for the democratic campaigns iowa is already in the rearview mirror they've moved on that in new hampshire the next step in this process through results from iowa new problem. each candidate is telling everyone what a huge success they've been even if it looks like they've struggled where it.
4:35 pm
is a good. thing going to. really be going well. in des moines an apology from the democratic party chairman that the system to count votes at the caucuses failed so spectacularly but he insists the results no being published can be trusted we have been working day and night to make sure that these results are accurate the one thing i will say is that the underlying data the raw data is secure it was always secure conspiracy theorists online are suggesting the result is being manipulated that's not something bernie sanders is buying into you know there's no excuse for not having results but it's like but that doesn't mean to say but the votes at the polls like comment will be adequate and i think that's an unfair i think to try to get the youngest candidate in the race former mayor people to judge
4:36 pm
is performing ahead of predictions and expectations but he's already looking forward to a similar result in new hampshire this weekend or this tuesday this is we get to this new hampshire just 4 decision. i have never been more times in our campaign you know our team and this is the this is the failure and i want to deliver results quickly and clearly has amplified calls to drop the state as the 1st in the nation to vote in the presidential process but one experience political observer says there's no obvious solution that doesn't mean that they rest of the nation will come up with the alternative that everybody can agree on new hampshire has a primary so that straight up election style voting the next state to hold a caucus is nevada later this month the democratic party there has already said it won't be using the system they used here in iowa. al jazeera des moines. well i've been speaking to scott lucas is that professor of political science and
4:37 pm
international studies at the university 'd of birmingham in the u.k. and he told us that the delay in the iowa results was merely a technical glitch there was a failure of an app to transmit the votes from each of the $1600.00 town hall meetings the caucuses to the center and when that failed they had to record by taking photos of the paper results and they were there were a few discrepancies now those have been resolved there's no indication from any of the candidates that they're disputing the result i suspect that on this roller coaster we call the presidential campaign within 48 hours even though the balloons have been burst in iowa the chaos would be left behind so no i think we're not looking at as it were a massive fraud a manipulation we are talking about a 21st century clutch list talk about the fact that 6 days from now we're in new hampshire in the 1st primary and everything can change again but for now what we can say is bernie sanders who won the popular vote that's a big boost for him because he is favored to win in new hampshire so he's very much
4:38 pm
as it were at the lead of the pack he put it has done well but will have to prove himself in new hampshire and in south carolina elizabeth warren has done well enough to be in the forefront and joe biden has sunk to 4th place we also should mention i mean close but sharp who is coming from out of the senate from minnows from minnesota who got 13 percent of the vote. now a draft resolution at the u.n. that's been seen by al-jazeera calls the u.s. president's proposal to solve the israeli palestinian conflict a breach of international law the plan which was unveiled by president trump last week allows israel to annex large parts of palestinian land is that diplomatic he said james bays. the push back against the trump plan on the middle east has begun here at the united nations i've seen wording for a draft resolution for the security council drawn up by the palestinians by tunisia the current arab member of the council and by another security council member
4:39 pm
indonesia the wording says that they strongly regret the fact that the trump plan is a breach of international law that's very strong wording and it's very interesting i was told earlier by an arab diplomat but they didn't want to criticize directly the trump plan because they wanted to get their support for this resolution from 2 permanent members the u.k. and france the palestinian ambassador has made it clear he already knows how the u.s. is going to vote we know it will be defeated by a veto but we want to show that the entire international community is the reflecting the same position. by all of us and articulated by the secretary general today again as he articulated that days ago when this very bad plan. announced in washington d.c. negotiations on the wording of this resolution will continue later this week and
