a very tragic situation tell us the latest for us on the rescue operations. a very tragic situation indeed. folly. the reason why we're getting this death toll climbing over the last few hours is that the front tick rescue mission is underway with all emergency personnel. police volunteers are now determined to get to the very heart of the road where the 2nd of us took place looking for survivors and why we're getting this huge number of casualties is that it started yesterday with an avalanche hit the road and buried a a bar and snow clearing vehicle now hours later the driver of the operator of the snow clearing vehicle escaped alive along with 7

people but 5 were killed in the 1st of a large of that particular moment dozens of rescue. workers emergency personnel police forces village guards volunteers joined in the frantic rescue operation it took them it was a mammoth task they were have to walk down steep hills all the way to the area that was struck by the 1st to try and help that's when the 2nd of a large hit and that explains the huge number of rescuers and that are being victims now the authorities are saying that 33 were killed in the last few hours and they're expecting that number to further climb because apparently most of those who were trapped in the 2nd lost their lives yeah that death toll has been climbing indeed tell us a bit more about the area where this accident happened and how difficult will the

rescue and recovery efforts be from now. a very difficult area compounded by the severe weather conditions in the north is some parts of the country in particular in the violent province which has been hit by a wave of snow falls and blizzards over the last few days the blizzards have carts of most of the roads leading to badger subdivide and this has further exacerbated the situation and hamper the arrival of more rescuers into the area the security authorities are warning civilians from getting into the area because they're concerned about the potential of further says because when you look at the map of the area and you look at particularly the district of by just the right it is surrounded most of the roads leading to those areas are surrounded by massive mountains which means that the potential for violence is it is very high against the backdrop of the ongoing severe weather conditions now the minister of interior

is traveling to the area as we speak and the authorities are saying that they are sending more and more unbalances and rescuers to the area to try to see whether they can find any survivors in the coming hours thank you for that update hashem had our life or is still in istanbul. in other world news hong kong is to begin quarantining all those coming from mainland china as it tries to stop the spread of the corona virus the territory's leaders says anyone crossing the border will be put in isolation for 14 days on call has already quarantined a cruise ship that arrived after being brought from entering taiwan japan has done the same with a cruise liner that was carrying around 3700 people have been 10 confirmed cases on the ship which remains in the harbor of yokohama on tuesday china so it's large a spike in deaths from the virus 65 in a single day and that brings the number of dead there to at least 490 people while

evacuations continue in. the center of the outbreak on wednesday. throughout 84 of its citizens and put them under quarantine and the chinese government has opened new facilities for those infected with the coronavirus in hope a province but as every force it faces an uphill task providing beds for the growing number of patients. trying to make the best of the will han lock down. the . junk and his family travel to han for the lunar new year even once the coronavirus lockdown ends they were face an additional 14 day quarantine when they get back home to shanghai and like millions of other chinese across the country the children might be smiling but the adults are very concerned. how you feel what do what do you want to tell people out there how you feel and what it's like so i think every city is just the 1st to want to since it's funny.

as it was and not. just as good yes no no no no no it's dr. to toot toot sweet tea and that's something he has had to speak with his children about age 2 to 13 i'm going to make sense seriously it's always hard to do my. words. since. this is the 1st schools photos show the empty streets of will haunt but the shelves in the supermarkets are not supplies he said are being brought in by the military like on the big concern for the central government here in beijing is increasing the medical capacity for the growing number of infected in the province more beds for the ill and more supplies for those treating them large gymnasiums in an exhibition center have been converted into makeshift hospitals in melbourne
6:08 pm
along with the 2 new hospitals built for the coronavirus completed this week there are now more than 6500 new beds for those infected but with the spread of the virus these new beds barely cover the increase of confirmed new cases and will be a problem from just the last week about how to al-jazeera beijing and with more on the situation in hong kong his. hong kong is becoming increasingly isolated from mainland china the mandatory 14 day quarantine of all people arriving in hong kong including its own citizens from across the border will not begin until saturday that's because around 100000 commuters cross into china each day and they need time to prepare the quarantine orders being in vote through rarely use special powers it's a thing for self like we will invoke the powers to annex legislation for people coming from the mainland including hong kong residents mainland residents and other

visitors to go into compulsory quarantine for 14 days. as carrie lam attempts to navigate around this crisis the cruise ship dreamworld docked in hong kong harbor with more than $3000.00 passengers and crew onboard they're going nowhere now that mainland health officials have confirmed that 3 passengers from an early a voyage are infected with the coronavirus now checks are being carried out on everyone on the ship at the time being i think we cannot conclude e.p. likely time of finishing the current he mentions right now and i would like to reassure. or need to impress on people here our department of health is adopting a prudent approach in managing this incident several crewmembers have been placed in a hospital isolation ward the announcement by hong kong's leader means that all the crew and passengers aboard the dreamworld now face the prospect of 14 days in
6:10 pm
quarantine what's less certain though is the fate of the $200.00 passengers who left this 1st so on january the 24th before the 3 infections were confirmed the $200.00 a rule understood to be from hong kong and went ashore in january the 24th. this scare is one of the reasons why doctors and nurses have been striking they say the only way to prevent the virus spreading is to seal the entire front here in another setback to the economy hong kong based cathay pacific airways has asked its 27000 staff to take 3 weeks unpaid leave before june the airline has had to reduce flights to the mainland its most important market. for many people here the big concern now is a shortage of face masks there have been long queues outside suppliers with some waiting in line overnight in the hope of not leaving it behind it this seems to be
6:11 pm
no shortage of face masks or luxury to dreamworld as passengers wait to learn just how long their extended and now enforced holiday will be adrian brown al-jazeera hong kong. and i'm joined by patrick tang dr patrick tang who's division chief of pathology sciences at cedar medicine here in doha thank you so much for coming in a lot of alarm obviously around the world but how would you compare this strain of the corona virus to let's say the saws virus in 2002 other emergencies like ebola in central africa is it spreading more quickly is it more lethal than in those viruses if we compare this novel coronavirus to sars we find that this new novel coronavirus is the last little than sars think the early data all shows that one of the other things about it is that it maybe just says infectious as sars if not more based on some of the data that we're seeing right now it's quite possible that the
6:12 pm
number of cases might be underestimated in china there might be other people that they haven't been able to test for the virus so so right now we're still in this stage where we're learning a lot more about the virus so is is it is declaring it then a global emergency causing more panic than it should i mean was that the right move to declare it a global emergency health emergency thing i think many of us agree that this is a global health emergency we don't need another virus in the human population one that we don't know what will happen one for which we don't have treatments and one for which we don't have a vaccine but isn't there a risk of creating panic with that as a as a case right now you know with people not wanting to travel china and so on there. also that social risk yes i think that that's a very good statement that we have to balance always the public health needs with the social and economic impacts of the the measures that we implement for these
6:13 pm
public health emergencies and so what do we know about the people who've died of this corona virus people who had existing conditions already that were made worse by the virus always it you know what do we know about the type of people who died the population so similar to the severe coronaviruses like sars the people that have died or mostly older elderly people that have had other illnesses as well to have been fewer people younger who have died so what are the best and worst case scenario so here with this current outbreak and how long do you expect it to last i think it's very hard to predict how long it's going to last it's probably the last a few more months at least while we still have a hope of controlling it in china and i think the whole world is hoping that china will be able to control it and reduce the impact they will have on the rest of the world i think we have to put all their efforts into containing the virus in china
6:14 pm
and helping china able to stamp it out just like we did with sars the worst case scenario would be that this virus just keeps. keeps going on and on and then there's transmission more transmission in other countries around the world in that case our best hope is that we can keep it under control while the efforts to develop vaccines are underway but it's not a pandemic level yet right it's technically not a pandemic so a pandemic would require sustained transmission in all many countries around the world right now the transmission that is occurring outside of china has been limited it's been for how many clusters and smaller clusters and all the transmission has been predictable and every time it's been there's been transmission we've been. able to control it so once we are no not able to control that transmission outside of china then then we have to start wondering whether this might be a pandemic right let's hope it doesn't get there thank you so much dr patrick chung
6:15 pm
for coming in and shedding some light on this for us dr patrick tongue is with the medicine here in doha thank you very much. and there's plenty more ahead on this i'll just al-jazeera news hour including after long delays some results from the iowa caucuses rolled in but nearly 2 days after the event it still isn't clear one class where in peru where fishermen say they're risking their lives as they dive to make a living and in sport the n.b.a.'s most valuable player reminds everyone who's boss he has the action coming up next. not to the united states where political ceremony division and confusion have all been on display this week and there is much more still to come in a few hours the senate is all but certain to acquit president donald trump on charges of abusing his power and obstructing congress on tuesday he delivered his
6:16 pm
annual state of the union address on occasion that highlighted the country's ideological divide meanwhile democratic party officials in iowa a cell struggling to report the results of monday's presidential caucuses we begin our coverage with. madam speaker. the president of the united states. a u.s. president impeached by the host walk in to face the full congress expected the senate will vote down the charges against him in the coming hours. the chants from the republicans in the chamber made it clear what this speech would be about his reelection the state of our union is stronger than ever before. the democratic response was this obvious the road but for the president he saw this as his time to herald what he sees as his accomplishments this is
6:17 pm
a blue collar boom. but many of his due to sticks were overblown. out of context or simply untrue as with many other promises in this speech i have also made an ironclad pledge to american families we will always protect patients with preexisting condition and. his administration is actually in court trying to get some of those protections removed and his administration has rolled back most efforts to combat climate change but the president made this promise to protect the environment days ago i announced that the united states will join the one trillion trees initiative an ambitious effort. in the democratic response some subtle attacks but they mostly focused on promoting their agenda it's pretty simple democrats are trying to make your health care better republicans in washington are trying to take it away but this speech will be remembered less for
6:18 pm
the substance than for the made for t.v. moments highlighting the president's past as a former television reality star he surprised the chamber by inviting one why don't know venezuela's opposition leader please take his message back that all americans are united with the venezuelan people in their righteous struggle for freedom thank you very much for. he had his wife present the presidential medal of freedom to an ellen conservative radio host and highlighted the family of a deployed soldier only to reveal he had come home. this was a night for symbolism planned and unprompted as he entered to give a speech the president seemed to refuse to shake the hand of the speaker of the house and as it ended she sent her own message about what she thought of the speech the tension on full display the president departed making it clear he will fight to be back here next year and the opposition party will fight just as hard to make
6:19 pm
sure this will be his last party call him al jazeera washington. after said dress house speaker nancy pelosi explained why she taught his speech. simmers amanda vanstone look mysterious and i wonder when you think about him not shaking your hand. off your hands and standing behind you believe. were you invited to another studio. probably not perfect and every time anyway i'm on from with you now away from the political theater in washington a winner is yet to be declared from monday's democratic caucuses in iowa the 1st vote in the race for the party's presidential nomination the delays been blamed on technical issues partial results but he thought he charged much and he ahead of bernie sanders although both are claiming victory alan for some the more. ok for the democratic campaigns iowa is already in the rearview mirror they've
6:20 pm
moved on that in new hampshire the next step in this process new full results from iowa no problem each candidate is telling everyone what a huge success they've been even if it looks like they've struggled where her. and her her here are it's good to hear her really doing well. in des moines an apology from the democratic party chairman that the system to count votes that the caucuses failed so spectacularly but he insists the results no being published can be trusted we have been working day and night to make sure that these results are accurate the one thing i will say is that the underlying data the raw data is secure it was always secure conspiracy theorists online are suggesting the result is being manipulated that's not something bernie sanders is buying into you know there's no excuse for not having
6:21 pm
results but it's like oh but that doesn't mean to say that the votes that the told was like come in will be an awkward and i think that's an unfair i think to try to get the youngest candidate in the race former mayor people to do. is performing ahead of predictions and expectations but he's already looking forward to a similar result in new hampshire this weekend and this is a this is we head to this new issue just for decision. i have never been more confident in our campaign our team and this is the this is the failure and i want to deliver results quickly and clearly has amplified calls to drop the state as the 1st in the nation to vote in the presidential process but one experience political observer says there's no obvious solution that does not mean that they rest of the nation will come up with the alternative that everybody can agree on new hampshire has a primary so that straight up election style voting the next state to hold
6:22 pm
a caucus is nevada later this month the democratic party there has already said it won't be using the system they used here in iowa alan fischer al-jazeera the morning. white house correspondent kimberly halkett live for us in washington so can be less sought with the state of the union and there's usually not a lot of drama state of the union addresses but this one was no doubt one of the most politicized one we've seen in a very long time tell us the reactions. well there's been pushback on both sides the reviews have been that the president was the most divisive of any u.s. president i think that one could be debated but certainly there's no question that well the word impeachment never came out of the president's mouth he was on the offensive he was railing in terms of attacking not only democratic policies but also just socialism one of the sort of tenets of one of his potentially main opposition if bernie sanders is to become the democratic presidential nominee i
6:23 pm
think what we can pull back from all of this is we're in the midst of 3 of the oddest days in u.s. politics in some time whether it's the state of the union address the chaos in iowa or even now looking ahead to the vote to the president and whether or not to remove him from office in the u.s. senate likely an acquittal is that the tone and the tenor from now until election day is very likely to be ugly it's likely to be to mulch us and i think that's what we can take away from that now for her part nancy pelosi did defend her actions and tearing up that speech following the state of the union address but she is also getting criticism as well i think though that what we're seeing here are some of the top politicians in the united states in the most reverent of bodies really misbehaving like children and that's how a lot of american voters are seeing it throwing up their hands and discussed you know this is why they brought donald trump in thinking that this could change all
6:24 pm
of the sort of acrimony that exists in washington but it doesn't appear to be the case of anything these politicians have doubled down on that so now we look ahead moving forward we have the vote in the u.s. senate to essentially decide whether or not to remove donald trump from office it's controlled by republicans unlikely to get the true thirds majority needed so donald trump will very likely follow according to the white house with some sort of response for waiting to see what that will be we're looking ahead. that vote 21 g. is where it will happen what will the president do next we simply don't know all right kimberly thank you for that can be live for us in washington let's speak some more about this now to our senior political analyst who joins us live from london by want to set a very particular moment in american politics deepening political divisions in full display the democrats in disarray what do you make about this moment. well look it's quite symbolic and it's quite important because disagreement is
6:25 pm
healthy lack of civility is not and when politicians are supposed to be role models for the rest of the citizenship for the body of the citizenship in a republic the way both the president 1st he's the one of course who provoked it turning his back on the handshake and then the way the house speaker. behaved this does express a lack of civility but it also underlines what's going on in the country in general which is this cultural war this bitter divisiveness on almost every important issue facing the country and when you look at that from from outside the united states a country that has always. been pretended that these to be our all model for the rest of the world for it to be descending to this sort of this form of divisiveness of course is not healthy now in terms of the content of the speech of course you
6:26 pm
know the american fact checkers of already found at least $31.00 inaccuracy in trump's speech but certainly it is a speech now for the rest of us outside in the world it is for americans it is focus on the economy education is on the likes it is focused on the elections it's focused on trump's possibility for elections right ed but there were a few mentions about foreign policy he talked about in a speech in the state of the union speech john talked about the u.s. working to end america's wars in the middle east we've heard that before or it's as he followed through with that promise. actually that was. not by itself why he might have meant it and he does behave in a way where he doesn't exactly necessarily you know doubling down on a doubling of american troops in the middle east but he certainly did send 20000
6:27 pm
new troops to the gulf region and he certainly did almost bring the region to the brink of war in his provocative action against iran so certainly he has been criticized for all sorts of reasons within the region and said to him the most criticized and one that will be discussed to morrow at the u.n. security council is of course the so-called foolishly dubbed the end of the century that is that has been of course rejected by the palestinians by the muslim majority states by europe by russia but almost never one and it got 25 seconds in his hour and 18 minutes of talking only 25 seconds that tells you already about a major flop of a major policy in the middle east all right thank you for that matter on bashara live for us there in london thank you for your time still ahead on this al-jazeera

the president used to say regina to address to hail what he called a great american comeback. one on our top story and the economic impact of the coronavirus is being felt world wide in thailand there are fears it could cost the tourism industry more than a $1000000000.00 most foreign tourists to thailand come from china but numbers have fallen drastically since the outbreak and brian reports from bangkok. 8 times a day at the mekong railway markets vendors move their way. and clear the tracks to make way for the train. it's hot and bustling highlight with tourists even in the middle of the coronavirus crisis. and we always like ours by hours like we are we aware of where. this is crowded my. china is thailand's biggest source of foreign tourists about

right now if things don't improve soon trouble because i have expenses to pay i need to pay rent and support my children so it's very difficult for me the ripple effects of the virus are expected to last for months if that impaired long for example it's going to drag longer you know virus could spread worldwide and stop tourism sector the economy would fall into slow down below 2 percent in the 2nd half of the year this is the impact that we get it's going to hit not just the recent sake they're not as exports that they're basically that's going to hear the mistake a lot of the time from back at the railway market the trains just pass through again the stalls are getting back to business many here hope life will return to normal just as quickly. as here at bangkok. and now the new president does so appeal against a court ruling overturning his reelection him with a rico now really want to

a 2nd term loss here but months of protests followed over accusations of vote rigging on monday judges an old results saying it had been compromised by the stuffing and altered ballots they ordered a new election within 150 days the president's spokesman called the decision a miscarriage of justice. has the latest from capitol hill. well the president is going to address the nation on wednesday and you're going to tell people what. he thought of organizing the paper would be a legal document for the appeal to. file the paperwork at the supreme court the supreme court there is no case and throw them out or they could get a date here medical what does that mean because the constitutional court has ordered that appraisal action have to be held with $150.00 days of the pill could delay the procedure so what will the opposition do the head of be incomplete.
6:36 pm
peapods he was a so clear has stated that the ruling party and the prison have every right to appeal the constitutional court ruling but he's very confident that the prison did not win the elections and he says opposes must take its course but of course the key thing of course is how the opposition supporters are going to react kristie days now they've been gathering at the party headquarters here in the capital a long way to landing for these elections looking forward to these elections planning to hold they are planning to hold demonstrations and marches in the capital and elsewhere in the country some are saying that is really was just take place today they say that they can't that won the election so there are fears that the longer it takes to get to these elections there could be violence on the scene if people go out on the street and posters so it's a very delicate phase for people in malawi right now all eyes are waiting to see and hear what the president may be interested people later on when they're. not
6:37 pm
peter for gracious is with the institute for security studies in johannesburg he says a court ruling is a major boost for fair elections in malawi. it does send a very strong message that the rule of law can be upheld it's not completely unprecedented in africa it happened in kenya in 2017 but it's pretty rare and the electoral board has come out pretty badly in this i mean it the judgment suggests that there was just blatant temporary you know i think this is going to become remembered in history as the typical election because according to the court judgement over half a 1000000 vote results were altered by to pick and i think nobody really knows in this case knew in advance whether the judiciary would be up to it and likewise if we look back at the the president and kenya 3 years nearly 3 years ago there was a big question marks over the court and in fact off to that that judgment in the
