war profiteers 0. 0. 00 there i'm a star and this is the news hour live from coming up in the next 60 minutes. president of the united states is not guilty as charged president trump is acquitted by the centers in his impeachment trial the white house says he has been vindicated. and only one republican former presidential nominee mitt romney broke ranks to vote along with democrats on a charge of abuse of power. i'm sure your abuse from the president and his supporters. does anyone seriously believe. that i would consent to these consequences other than from an inescapable conviction that my oath before god
2:01 am
demanded of me. 3 days and 179 injured after a passenger jet skids off a runway in istanbul and breaks into pieces and desperate scenes on the other side of tacky as well as rescue is buried in a wall of snow while searching for victims of an earlier avalanche. tell us president donald trump has been acquitted of all charges in his senate impeachment trial bringing an end to only the 3rd such trial in american history now trying to cripple was almost sussan and the republican controlled chamber a 2 thirds majority vote was needed for a conviction. so we've reached the conclusion i think those who got there early political exercise. from the beginning to the end. and the final irony of it all
2:02 am
is the speaker was right in the beginning because here we are today in a position to judge the political impact of that it all started about politics did it and about politics the president has as high as approval rating since he's been in office while in the end only one republican crossed the floor that was utah sent us a and 2012 presidential nominee mitt romney who voted to convict trump on the charge of abuse of power but not on the 2nd charge of obstruction of congress accordingly the president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust what he did was not perfect no it was a flagrant assault on our electoral rights our national security and our fundamental values corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one's oath of office that
2:03 am
i can imagine all the charges related to accusations that trump withheld military aid to ukraine and exchange for an investigation into political rival joe biden now all $47.00 senators in the democratic camp voted to convict but it wasn't enough to remove him from office the senate turned its back on the truth on a fair trial on doing what the founding fathers would have wanted us to do but democrats walked out of the senate chamber with their heads held high. because we sought the truth we did everything we could to get the truth the american people believe that and knew we were fighting for the truth while as soon as he was acquitted trumpery posted a video on twitter and reads trump for ever the white house welcomed the votes calling the impeachment process a witch hunt based on a series of lions. castro is live for us from capitol hill heidi i see present
2:04 am
trump is claiming victory and is also planning to address the nation tomorrow now giving the given the seeming inevitability of what's happened today what's the reaction been like on capitol hill. sure well democrats certainly are boys seeing their disappointment because they knew as everyone else did that the chances of succeeding in getting president trump removed from office was exceedingly slim and so it came as no surprise to anyone that he was acquitted on both charges ultimately the hurdle here was not only to convince 2 thirds of the majority to find president trump guilty but it was also that the senators knew full well in making this decision that a guilty verdict would have promptly in immediately rendered trump removed from office that's in the u.s. constitution it has never happened before in u.s.
2:05 am
history and that is why president trouble is not only the 3rd u.s. this u.s. president to be impeached but he is also the 3rd u.s. president to be acquitted that constitutional hurdle for removal from office simply so high now democrats have said again that they are disappointed they pointed to the partisan nature of the support for president trump and they've also said that though this is not the end of the road this may be the end of this impeachment proceeding but the investigations into president trump will likely continue in the democratic controlled house of representatives heidi talk us through the votes that we saw tonight i mean we did see mitt romney break ranks but this has been perhaps one of the most divisive moments in the history of the u.s. congress where do we go from here. that's right romney was the one and only republican who did break ranks and he summed up this conflict this internal conflict quite eloquently on the floor prior to. making his vote he said
2:06 am
that he wanted to put his conscience above that of party loyalty and because he and all these other senators had taken an oath of impartiality at the outset of this trial he said that democrats prove the case to him that the evidence supported his conclusion that trump did abuse the power of his office by soliciting interference from ukraine to help aid in his own re-election bid the big question is whether or not all this impeachment proceedings will have hurt or help president trump in the long run looking toward november when american voters will be going to the ballot to ultimately be the final jurors about whether or not president trump should remain in office for a 2nd term because democrats have long feared that a failed impeachment proceeding could galvanize president charles bass further turning out war of his supporters but at the same time there has been
2:07 am
a lot of damaging information about president trump and they know that voters are watching and that's another motivation for democrats to continue their investigations even now outside of the impeachment proceedings are there for us live on capitol hill thank you very much heidi well let's dig into this a little more with alan baron he's a former u.s. special impeachment counsel to the house of representatives and he joins me now live from washington d.c. mr baron let me start by asking you about the concept of impeachment itself i mean this has been such a partisan process was this what was intended by the founding fathers and has this change the very nature of impeachment going forward. well i think it may have eradicated impeachment from the constitution if this was not impeachable conduct and if the political parties could not agree that this cannot be teller tolerated in the press in the united states then why how much and how much lower is the bar
2:08 am
going to be i mean it's just mind boggling that a president could hold up aid to a and embattled of. ally fighting the russians approved by congress to give them the aid and he holds it up for his personal political gain how much worse can it get and yet this republican dominated. senate except they don't and that's a new norm it i think it means we now are facing the imperial presidency and that's a very unsettling prospect almost of and i do see that a handful of senate republicans they did agree that the house and logically proven its case and said the transactions were wrong but then several suggested that because it's an election year they would let the voters decide so do you think that the fact that this is an election year does that change the calculus and could we have seen a different outcome if they weren't going to the polls in 9 months i think it was
2:09 am
just a fairly flimsy excuse the constitution is not written in a way that says in an election year we can ignore impeachable and removeable conduct so i think it was something of a fig leaf to be skews what they knew was reprehensible impeachable removeable conduct and now they have an excuse oh well it's an election year anyway what are they going to say if he gets reelected. well one of the arguments i recall that the democrats made for that going through with this whole process was that trump is a threat to national security needed to be removed immediately do you think the nancy pelosi its decision to delay is sending these oscars of impeachment to the senate that that that could have undercut that argument. i don't believe so 1st of all it wasn't that much of a delay it was roughly 3 to 4 weeks i think i'm i'm not clear in my own mind what she was trying to accomplish during that period it may be something we're just not
2:10 am
aware of hoping to develop certain lines of evidence but i can't believe that that made the difference i just don't think so i see this also isn't over yet now the house judiciary committee is already saying that it potentially plans to subpoena john bolton so how long could this drag out for and what sort of consequences could that have. i'm not surprised that they're talking about subpoenaing john bolton i think the democrats are going to keep the fires burning between now and the election in november and i think they should. trump escaped ok that doesn't mean everything now goes away what i think is the great danger is we now may have trump truly unleashed and who knows what he's capable of doing between now and november since he doesn't seem to recognize the guardrails in the limits that presidents heretofore have recognized and when you say trump unleashed and you
2:11 am
saying that this acquittal potentially sets a precedent really allowing someone to go and ask a foreign interference in an election century. it absolutely sets a precedent i mean this is a political proceeding but it's also a legal proceeding and you can be certain that whether it's trump or some successor democrat or republican who feels it's in his or her best interest to engage in this kind of conduct who is then to say well that's wrong you can't do that i mean the rebuttal will be well look what happened in trump didn't even come close to removing him from office for that conduct well both republicans and democrats are saying this has been an attack on the institutions of congress on the constitution that both the obviously very different reasons and given that this has been so divisive what kind of a legacy does this now leave in congress how does the whole country move forward from this. that's
2:12 am
a good question i don't think the impeachment created the divisiveness the divisive what happened in the impeachment is a reflection of the divisiveness that already existed. you know and i'm no historian but i cannot remember the country is polarized as it is there's nobody on either side of the aisle in the congress reaching across to the other side to see can we work together and that's that's really very disheartening and it's one of the reasons why we are where we are today alan baron that a former u.s. special impeachment counsel to the house of representatives always good to speak to you on out there. thank you for the iowa democratic party has released updated results from monday's caucuses as we say it is an election year and with 75 percent of precincts reporting people to judge a slightly increased his lead over the only sound is found placed elizabeth warren's vote fell marginally while joe biden's tally increased by that same amount

china the mandatory 14 day quarantine of all people arriving in hong kong including its own citizens from across the border will not begin until saturday that's because around 100000 commuters cross into china each day and they need time to prepare the quarantine orders begin vote through rarely use special powers so i think food shelf life we will invoke the powers to annex legislation for people coming from the mainland including hong kong resistance mainly and residents and other visitors to go into compulsory quarantine for 14 days. as carrie lam attempts to navigate around this crisis the cruise ship dreamworld docked in hong kong harbor with more than $3000.00 passengers and crew onboard they're going nowhere now that mainland health officials have confirmed that 3 passengers from an early a voyage are infected with the coronavirus now checks are being carried out on

white house has welcome to the voters calling the impeachment process a witch hunt based on a series of lives. all democrats voted to convict trump they've called the acquittal valueless and are vowing to press ahead with more investigations. correspondent kristensen amy has visited the swing state of pennsylvania which helped to secure trump's victory back in 2016 many there say the strong economy could push them on a strong this time around. here in small town america you didn't need a psychic to predict how democrats would react to the failed attempt to peach the president i believe the impeachment was called for. and it's unfortunate that the witnesses were not allowed to testify. but this is the city of new hope in the swing state of pennsylvania. republican say that that you know impeaching trump would further divide the country but letting him get away with what he's gotten

away with it divides the country also. and this leap the town where the 1st president of the united states george washington camped with his army during the american revolution is tired of politics said i'm not a republican and i didn't vote for john but i'm just sitting here and just trying to get him out you know tell me something that you going to do for the country and even those who don't like the president aren't exactly pleased with the democrats have yet to see i think true leadership come and say ok well here's a here's an option that you can grab on to a lot of the people we spoke to here in new hope say they just don't know who to believe when it comes to politicians but with the wages rising and unemployment falling the strong economy could favor donald trump who won pennsylvania in 2016 by less than a percentage point so i don't think. the charges that they put together were worth
