adrian brown in hong kong and adrian we've seen president xi there i think the 1st time since the world health organization declared this a global health emergency it's quite unusual isn't it for china to ask for outside help but that's it exactly what they've done. yes president xi jinping has really been conspicuous by his absence during the past week he's been keeping a very low profile perhaps deliberately so but yes he met the cambodian leader on wednesday and thursday the come boding leader of course is very close to president xi jinping and china is a very big benefactor of cambodia but yes china is sending out a message on state controlled media and that message is a sense the this china has the arsenal at its disposal to contain this fire as social media though is accentuating the negative state controlled media is accentuating the positive but there's no doubt from the pictures that i've been
4:06 pm
seeing on twitter and elsewhere that china is very much you know a nation at war at the moment and that enemy is a visible one now the people's liberation army has been deployed police have been deployed and of course hundreds of thousands of medical workers that said though china has conceded as you pointed out that actually it does need outside help it needs more medical appointment including protective clothing for medical workers and more face masks so it's rare for china to make that sort of admission i covered the earthquake in sichuan in 2008 and china resisted all offers of outside help this time it appears to be different and meanwhile what about those who measures the measures that were put in place in woodland these a hospital is made from pre-fabricated units that were meant to be up and running and providing thousands of extra beds and they functioning at.
4:07 pm
well yes and no certainly china has been conversing stadiums and gymnasiums into makeshift hospitals and you know state media again has been you know touting the value of this and also portraying this as a very much positive news the emphasis being very much on the positive we've also seen pictures today of people who have recovered from the virus leaving hospital again that's something china wants to stress a few weeks ago martin the media in china seem to be much more open than it normally is it seemed to be given almost free rein to report not just on what was happening on the ground but the questions that were being raised about how this outbreak happened and the cover up that followed that has now stopped it's back to the state controlled media that we've always known right adrian thanks for that adrian brown there giving us the very latest from hong kong now we can speak to derek gatherer his a viral a g.'s in the diff partment of biomedical and life sciences at lancaster university
4:08 pm
in the u.k. thank you for talking to us i just wondered how worrying is it the development of we've heard the virus has been confirmed in a new born baby the baby is now at 36 years old and sorry 36 hours old believe but it has been confirmed that the baby's got the virus how alarming is that. it's not particularly surprising really there are some viruses that can cross the placenta by here and and infect newborn infants so that that in itself isn't particularly surprising unfortunately and do we need to discover exactly how the virus was transmitted because of course the baby could have been could have been infected just being in close proximity to the mother or via the womb. it would be surprising if it had been infected after birth because 36 hours is that is a very short time in the incubation period is the period of time between the virus
4:09 pm
entering the body in for symptoms appearing no we know in the case of this particular virus that the incubation period can be quite short it can be over 3 or 4 days but 36 hours seems to be well beyond the end of that range so i would suspect that this is actually an infection that occurred in utero meaning before the b.b. was born right now the baby is apparently 3.25 kilograms so you know a good sized baby and is in a sable condition and are you surprised at the rather low levels of fatality when it comes to this novel coronavirus given that there is something like 565 deaths in china out of 28000 plus infections. but when we 1st discovered the virus and discovered it was a relative of sars we feared something rather worse because sars is a very dangerous virus was a very dangerous virus back in 2003 with a very high fatality rate the fatality rate for this particular viruses are only 2
4:10 pm
percent mark but we have to be careful with that statistic because that's true percent of the confront cases and in order to become a confront case you have to usually find yourself in hospital and that probably means that you've got your morning or already an hour are already in a fairly severe condition so it's not to 2 percent rest of the general population and the corresponding figure for the influenza in 2001 in the swine flu pandemic was 1.8 percent so this new virus is just slightly rather more clinically dangerous than than the swine flu but it's certainly not in the same league as science which is good news right and have we seen this outbreak of the new coronavirus peak yet or is there some way to go. it's difficult to say because we don't know whether the containment measures will eventually work or to respond achieve viruses are extremely difficult to contain we have. a mix of flu every winter and
4:11 pm
occasionally have flu pandemics and it's generally believed that continuing influenza is it isn't possible that you just have to wait an influenza epidemic or pandemic watch over the population so what we're trying to do here is to contain a large scale responder tree virus outbreak which is going to be very difficult if you'd asked me that question of a week ago i would have said that there would be a very small chance that we could continue this in china but a week has passed and it seems that although we still have a good handful of travel related cases appearing around the world that the majority of infections are confined to one city and who be proven so it may be that this is just working but it's still a little bit early to see all right derek gatherer thank you very much indeed for talking to us live from lancaster university in the u.k. . my pleasure therefore palestinians have been shot dead by israeli soldiers in separate incidents within the last 24 hours clashes later broke out in bethlehem
4:12 pm
between palestinians and israeli soldiers the military is searching for a suspect to those involved in a cow ramming incident in jerusalem in which 12 soldiers were wounded let's go live to our correspondent gary fawcett he's in west jerusalem and and so it seems like a fairly frenetic 24 hours can you take us through the sequence of events. it does yes well let's start with some of the more recent events and just in the last few minutes reports in the occupied west bank of a and his rating being shot and injured. in a shooting attack to the west of ramallah and then before that we had this attentive shooting attack in the occupied east of jerusalem in the old city close to the al aqsa mosque compound known as the temple mount to jews were israeli security forces there say they were shot at by
4:13 pm
a man as he approached them and that man was shot and killed one policeman lightly wounded that man said to be a palestinian israeli from what police say is the north we understand that he is from haifa that before that in the early hours of the morning in west jerusalem israeli time just around 2 am there was a group of israeli soldiers who were on a tour through the city ahead of investiture ceremony at the way at the western wall they were rammed by a vehicle 12 injured one of them seriously the vehicle an involved in that found just outside bethlehem in the town of beit jalla there have been clashes in or at least confrontations inside bethlehem as there is an operation to try to find the driver of that vehicle dozens of people reported injured with tear gas inhalation and before that all of that overnight in janine in the west bank in the occupied
4:14 pm
west bank there was another israeli military operation to demolish a house belonging to someone involved in a 2018 killing of an israeli settler and jury in clashes that erupted after that one of the protesters was shot dead by israeli israeli security forces and there was video as well released of an israeli palestinian policeman who appeared to be just standing in a doorway. a and he too being shot dead so as you say it is a real spike in violence and this coming after a nother incident in hebron on wednesday when about astonied teenager was shot during confrontations there so it is a real spike and harry would it be what it be fair to link this increased violence in the region to the recent revelation of the details of the drop the trump peace plan which of course made both sides the israelis and the palestinians hardened their positions. will certainly it will be hard to make
4:15 pm
a conclusive link but many people are at least pointing to that as a possible reason for this the initial response from palestinian terms of palestinian protests and the like in the days after the announcement of the peace plan on tuesday last week was relatively muted there were some protests and confrontations but the fact that israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu immediate plans to begin annexation measures were braked by the americans seems to suggest that perhaps there wouldn't be a major response or a spike in violence it is a bit hard to give a direct line of course 2 of these deaths were linked to an israeli operation engineered to demolish a house and so there are sometimes local and very immediate reasons for these sorts
4:16 pm
of confrontations breaking out that once we do see a spike like this it can inspire more such activity they can start to take on a momentum of their own so we have to wait and see how things develop in the coming days powerful if it live from west to east and thanking. we've got a lot more to come on this al-jazeera news hour including. oil and where record numbers of families are now living in emergency accommodation the country's housing crisis is central in this year's general election. also coming up pictures of protests we meet the indian artists using their work to speak out against a controversial citizenship. and the race for the playoffs heats up in the n.b.a.'s miami take on the clippers will have the details.
4:17 pm
the more demonstrations are expected in the iraqi capital baghdad as well as other cities across the country after weeks of political deadlock and anti-government protests on wednesday at least 10 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in the city of marjah in the south the supporters of the shia cleric mactire al sattar attacked a protest camp matata al sadr has a different time supported and opposed the protest movement imran khan has more now on the protest from baghdad. seems that there is a crack between those. movements though what we're hearing from people very close to the generals of the i'd also from political analysts is that the qatar also the eyes actually got a mission to try and open. and all of the bridges particularly central baghdad leading to where i'm still right now which is tucker
4:18 pm
a square there was all of the protesters to be pushed into tucker a square and it is also replicating this strategy where the in the southern provinces well that's why we saw his followers supporters go in to niger where 10 people were killed now the reason for this is that the. several soldiers actually put his support behind the iraqi government and behind the security forces he says that the law needs to come back to iraq but he also has a very different agenda to the protesters the protesters have been here since october with a very clear agenda they want a complete overhaul of the government system an end to corruption a new government elections but what other actually wants is an end to the u.s. presence both diplomatic and military in iraq and those 2 things are very different what people are really worried about here is that in total saddam will try and co-opt the protesters and try to force them to back his agenda. all right now we
4:19 pm
can speak to. a researcher on identity politics in iraq in the middle east thank you very much for joining us 1st of all it be interesting just to. work out exactly who is doing the protesting it seems very much is the approach anti-government protest movement is now split into 2 distinct groups well no the the same protesters that have been on the streets since october 2019 it's the same protest there is a made at the very early stages of the protest movement but they don't want a new form or or a new faces of the ethnic sectarian quota which includes most of the southern who have many ministries involved in many of the posts through 1003 rocky governments which is also why he took a gradual step back from the protest movement which allowed him to take an advantage of the posts in a money power vacuum where you ron also had an opportunity to pick a significant cleric like him to do the proxy right is it fair to say then that the
4:20 pm
saddle right to follow is a now. the antigovernment protesters who have set up shop pretty much in baghdad and other cities in the south of course they are now under the umbrella of the iranian proxy umbrella of power or influence of power in iraq this is due to the fact as we mentioned that most of the souther did not receive the usual popularity he really does 3003 iraqi protests therefore he took an opportunity to taken advantage of the previously mentioned power vacuum there for the sudras followers whom were involved logistically to support or whatever they want to call it and the iraqi protests were only there for the personal interest or the political interests of those other and not for the very same interests of the iraqi people as there are that's the point question obviously that is what is the ultimate objective of saddam and his followers of the objective of the so that his followers to maintain that the so there is power and influence across iraq you provinces within iraq you domestic affairs whether it means to be with the protesters or whether to be with
4:21 pm
you again and go. them and so to most of us older and his followers unfortunately it's a balance of power between him and the other shia parties in iraq and mohammed ali the new prime minister designate it where does that leave him between a rock and a hard place it would seem well that doesn't leave him anywhere different from where it left other i'd imagine him a tough a low as a veteran of the ethnic sectarian quarter region which the protesters have been protesting against he was imposed again like his predecessor is on the iraqi people on the iraqi protesters the iraqi protesters were very clear they do not want any member any former member of the ethnic sectarian coterie gene he has been an m.p. for years he was a minister of twice the means as if they never replaced are that i've been at the it's the it's a it's a politician from the same political bloc from the same political arena from the same political economic league they do. thank you very much indeed version.
4:22 pm
probably going to the us now because president trump as you may have heard has been acquitted in his impeachment trial he was charged with abusing presidential power as well as the obstruction of congress only one republican broke ranks but it wasn't enough to see the president removed from office the democrats are now vowing to press ahead with more investigations here's our washington correspondent joe castrated. it is therefore the outcome was as expected donald trump be and he is here by acquitted of the charges in said articles donald trump only the 3rd u.s. president to be impeached now also the 3rd u.s. president to be acquitted the white house called it full of vindication and exoneration mr romney all but one republican senator loaded not guilty on both articles of impeachment the lone defector was mitt romney the utah senator who in 2012 with the republican presidential nominee my faith is at the heart of who i am
4:23 pm
romney said in an emotional floor speech his conscience was more important than party loyalty he voted guilty an abuse of power what he did was not perfect no it was a flagrant assault on our electoral rights our national security and our fundamental values a few other republicans said they believe what trump did was wrong but didn't rise to remove all from office others blasted the democrats' efforts to remove the 45th us president i worry about the future of the presidency after what's happened here ladies and gentlemen you will come to regret this whole process all the democrats voted to convict trump on both charges they voice disappointment after his acquittal but did not admit defeat may yet face further investigation in the democrat controlled house and make no mistake about it the drip drip drip of evidence is going to keep coming out with each new revelation the message to the
4:24 pm
house of representatives. don't do this again. now with the impeachment officially behind him trump can spring toward the november election whether all this has helped him or hurt him as a candidate is the big question castro al-jazeera washington. well this is the scene live in washington d.c. where we are expecting president trying to make an appearance and perhaps are his 1st words since the acquittal in the senate watching all of this this is our white house correspondent kimberly how kit and kimberly has all kind of mood as the as the president woken up and is it kind of triumphalist or or what kind of mood. we expect the real victory lap of this president is going to come at $700.00 g.m.t. that's when he's going to make an announcement from the east room in something of
4:25 pm
the white house that promised would come after the vote to acquit the president in the u.s. senate you have to remember the context he does have a lot to celebrate here not only has he been acquitted in the u.s. senate but since day one there has been pushed back at the grassroots level on his presidency he we've also seen ongoing legal court challenges that so far have not impacted his time in the white house significantly and then of course we have the fact that he survived federal investigation that russia probe into whether or not there was collusion between his 2016 presidential campaign and russia the president her survive all of that the headlines now in washington tougher than taff line of the that essentially that what we've seen in the polls is this is actually helped the president so why now when it comes to checking power really the only check now will be at the ballot box in november so we expect to hear from the president if not sooner that he will be somewhat celebrate tory given the fact that he has once
4:26 pm
again shown shown that he's been able to continue this presidency despite enormous criticism and investigation you can believe there are many. beyond who is suggesting that he might have been acquitted but he's certainly not been exonerated i mean is there any sense the the mud will stick if you like and the shame of having been only the 3rd president in u.s. history to have been impeached will stay with him because he's joined joined a very tiny club. it's a long day until election day and there's a lot that can still come out and expect that those spears for the president are still out and she's certainly scharf and so we expect that this is not over there are a lot of things that are happening that will help the president too for example something that kind of wasn't mentioned much in the headlines of the last 24 hours but we'll have enormous significance is the fact that the department of justice has basically
4:27 pm
now blocked all investigations that could be quote politically sensitive what does this mean anything that would investigate the president potentially hurt his reelection effort is now blocked you remember how that hurt hillary clinton the when she was running for president as the democratic presidential nominee the fact that there was that investigation into whether or not she had used e-mail improperly well that kind of investigation certainly hurt her campaign will not occur now under this department of justice so what we're seeing here is not only the potential to protect the president but essentially those institutions that used to check power that certainly isn't happening anymore in fact the erosion of accountability certainly is accelerating in the united states something we've seen for the last 20 years but this impeachment has really shown that the check and balance that used to be the congress isn't in place anymore when it comes to checking presidential power all right thank you very much kimberly how good our white house correspondent and we'll get back to you later on. a high speed train

others were injured when the pegasus airlines boeing 737 broke into 3 pieces after landing in poor weather. see here whether it is rob what are you looking at we will go on with this area because turkey's was particularly bad and it's not just turkey to southeast of europe is suffering from what is a winter lies will not name moscow is just called out of bounds in moscow this is the 1st proper stance for one and some parts of southeastern europe for example in serbia and the winds come with it there's a fairly good seasonal wind it's called the bora comes down the croatian coast domination coast and it's pretty strong i've seen gusts of $180.00 calories per hour in the last 24 hours dangerous coast now it is slowly easing so for that part of europe are all right the same cannot be said for turkey although for the most part it is rain and strong wind it is a snow we should probably consider considering we're just talking about for example event in the next 24 hours that we can to see that snow going east wouldn't start
4:30 pm
to fall in eastern turkey now it's going to stay there for 2 days van will gradually get colder and probably subzero this is the picture for saturday we're down to plus to the stars persistent and will of course build up the chances are we'll get something nasty out of it anything up to a meter of snow in eastern turkey was winds as the whole system goes across over the thing up to $100.00 can be his brother all that adds up to pretty nasty conditions repeatedly in van in the same area where we've had now 2 avalanches. well thank you very much still to come here on the al-jazeera news hour we look back. on the life in the era of hollywood legend kirk douglas has died at the age of 103 by munich take a step closer to adding to their collection of trade is in germany paul will have the details.

think of some of the biggest companies in the world today all of them big tech with algorithms that they call them all that we use them the more data we produce and we're in the midst of a great race for data and big tech companies around the chase empires are rising on a wealth of information and we do other commodities and the 2nd the far series carly rae examines whether corporations are colonizing the internet like the popularity and power of big tech on a. conflict that is now considered to be the world's worst humanitarian crisis how many did not all have to die like this horrible stock response is really for sale and investigation into how billions of euros are made from supplying arms to saudi arabia a leader of the coalition fighting a war in the south the case is interesting to watch as the amount of money involved yemen war profiteers on al-jazeera.

for this have a look at the top stories here in the al-jazeera news hour china is struggling to cope with the coronavirus it's seen a spike in deaths $73.00 have died in a single day and there are reports of beijing may even delaying its biggest political meeting of the year. clashes have broken out in bethlehem in the occupied west bank between palestinians and israeli soldiers earlier 4 palestinians were shot dead by israeli forces in separate incidents within 24. of president trump is due to speak publicly for the 1st time since being acquitted
4:33 pm
in the his impeachment trial that's a seen live in washington is due to address the audience at the national prayer breakfast i'm a bring you what he says to reach out to syria. the rebels in syria supported by turkish artillery have pushed back government forces from a key town in italy a province that has turkey's president warned syria's government not to continue their offensive into deadly which of course is the last rebel held region hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by the fighting many of them have fled north closer to the turkish border where our correspondent is sin and cos yearly you're in a camp soon i'm in italy a province close to the turkish border and use you were there last year we've seen the u.n. warn of parts even half a 1000000 extra people now on the move heading in your direction what difference do
4:34 pm
you notice in the camp this time. well martin here i am and carmel of the strength of a leg which is actually a little bit further than my camp and as you said i have been traveling to here for the last couple of years and the little camp is literally looking to buy the roads exactly by the roads and you know these camps they begin to the bills beginning from last all this after a aggression or a start the syrian president intensified it's in his advance from south to do north and this can and is called chaffin starmap that as i said literally advisory role and look to find the internally displaced people by themselves and i am told by the camp administrators that they began with 250 families and they are during
4:35 pm
last august in the last 6 months left next plane and in the last couple of weeks the number of the families have been increased to 750 and really look tents are all in the very crowded and in some plant there are 2 families 3 families and they showed me one tent where fight families live together just this is unbelievable and i have to tell you that martin this is not only i was suing the government in the strikes killing you paul but the psychology here total it down and. you can see the water behind me this water is a lot more there because of the rain and i'm told that also the storage of the camp flows and into that water and children are playing in the water like the looting and i'm told by again and really can't president epidemics are on the rise and they're telling that they're looking for bread everything nor anything mention schools kids are not able to go to schools and also another thing that i'm told for
4:36 pm
instance in a tent right across me i'm not able to show you because i don't want to go that route. the picture because of connection. and you have the heart attack because of the situation right you and there are you know living in water so. it is it is unbelievable you have to see it with your eyes to understand what's going on but people are suffering it's like that not only from air strikes but because of the dire conditions and other things sin and cos here lou reporting on the most terrible conditions being endured by hundreds of thousands of people in northern syria thank you. all right let's go back to main story of course it's the corona virus outbreak so far in africa there have been no confirmed cases but the authorities there have been put on alert as hundreds of suspected infections are being reported and it's likely to be on the agenda of the
4:37 pm
african union leaders they're currently meeting in their biannual session in at this hour but while our correspondent mohammed evolve is there in that is over and he's been speaking to john kangas song who's director of the task force that's been set our. i think we we have to have a coordinated approach in order to respond to these i mean entry it the cordon it is approach is being guided by. their accommodations on the word organization. or was very clear last week just it it clearly there should be no restrictions to travel. or movement of people good setting conditions that we strongly advise and recommend everybody should. we have seen some public pressure via media on the government to stop flights of china do you perceive the trend growing across africa we should really rely on the facts and avoid feeling. if we
4:38 pm
do not do that then you become very complicated to manage. it devalues in case it comes to africa's days no need to panic at this point but to be action and reaction on the facts and evidence as we speak today there is no deported cases of. on the continent of africa that is a fact. police in le city fear that the 1st lady could escape facing murder charges if she is allowed to travel to neighboring south africa my saia was charged on tuesday for her alleged links to the killing of the prime minister's 1st wife to follow that was in 2017 well the current mrs to barny turned herself in after weeks on the run the word for her arrest was issued after she failed to turn up for questioning a month ago meanwhile her husband the prime minister thomas of army announced his

intention to resign following pressure from his party over the whole kerfuffle let's speak to for me to miller in johannesburg i mean this sounds very much like a kind of novel doesn't it say the current wife of the prime minister of the su too is being charged with the murder of her predecessor. and that's exactly if martina does read like a script from a soap opera and the current wife of the prime minister time to bonnie is out on bail in a suit to their work concerns from the police that she was a flight risk despite that the judge presiding over the case did grant of bail and they've even been questions raised around that and the judge's ties to the prime minister tom to bonnie they have been questions around that judge previously also previously accused of misconduct and that judge's relationship and has also been criticized by all pursuits
4:40 pm
a convention the party in power and the one that tom to bonnie belongs to nevertheless. has been given a bail and she's due to appear in court in about 2 weeks time and as you mentioned the story goes back all the way to 2017 when a rather was killed at that time police say that they thought perhaps an armed gang was behind the killing killing it was they then emerge that. talked about his current wife was then questioned in fact the body himself was also questioned he's not faced any charges but since then messiah has been charged with murder as well as attempted murder because the companion the friend of the polo was with her at the time and she was injured in that shooting and now people across the country are concerned about the political ramifications that that some marchers pushing for the prime minister to step down because the story of the scandal has certainly affected
4:41 pm
