defends firing 2 officials who delivered the most damaging testimony during the impeachment investigation. and in supporting a new american football league set to rival the n.f.l. is about to kick off the accept valorie launches in the united states jack aides on from it senate shall failure. or tight security forces have raided a shopping center where dozens of people have been held hostage by a soldier who went on a mass shooting the suspect is still somewhere inside the mall in a city northeast of bangkok he went there after 1st opening fire in a house and an army base live there it's away in haiti he joins us from bangkok where a dramatic pictures reaching us from what more can you tell us about the situation
9:02 pm
as it stands this hour. well things seem to have quietened down a little bit the more certainly it is an ongoing situation the gunman as far as we understand is still inside that shopping mall but over the course of the past couple of hours or so we did see many people leaving the more and we saw soldiers and police going inside that building to try to bring the situation under control and also help those who were trapped in there to get out of the building which is exactly what we saw happen we're not sure exactly how many people might still be inside the building along with the gunman are there are reports that the police are saying that they have taken control of large parts of the shopping mall several floors it is a multi floor building there were some reports that the gunman was somewhere on the 4th floor the police certainly not confirming that in fact it seems that they're
9:03 pm
not really sure of the stage where he is if they do know they're certainly not telling anyone in the public in effect they have urged media organizations in the area for to stop broadcasting live from the vicinity so they don't give away the movements of the police in case the gunman is watching any of those live feeds on his phone so it's still very much a situation that is under way reports also that he has taken some hostages and the police are not saying how many people may be held by the gunman inside that shopping more and when these types of mass shootings where we did rather tend to see them in other parts of the world not necessarily where you are in thailand just hired unusual a situation is this in the country. and i think we may well have lost wayne hey unfortunately let's bring you another
9:04 pm
breaking story now this one in geneva libya peace talks have been ongoing representatives of the un recognized governments and rival sent by warlords for the for have to are there but discussions appear to have ended with no agreements speaking earlier at the african union summit anything you hear your in chief antonio caetera said they're working to get a lasting cease fire. example with regards to libya it's evident the crisis has been seriously aggravated by the presence of forces and equipment from many other countries in clear violation of the mandate of the security council i think we have to reestablish the sovereignty of international law and the conditions in which the decisions of the security council could be implemented and that countries should understand that their engagement to promote certain conflicts increases the potential for actions by terrorist groups we know how to the hamid joins us now live from geneva the u.n. secretary general underlining homeport in those talks are it seems it's all in vain
9:05 pm
. well it has been very difficult and these were going to be very difficult conversations that were held here in geneva simply because they would try it was the military track 5 commanders from said warlord have to 5 military commanders sent by the u.n. recognize government in tripoli and these 10 people not having any kind of damage talk but trying to hash it take neutrality is this very fragile truce a permanent cease fire there were some very difficult conversations you know did 2 sides don't see eye to eye absolutely anything and 2 days ago actually said that they were point of divergence at the time he was trying he was hoping that they could come to some sort of agreement or middle ground well that did not happen he
9:06 pm
issued a statement idea and say that they did agree that you need to continue with this truce however wobbly it is you need to both sides agreed that the integrity and sovereignty of libya needs to be preserved but in the end of that coming week it is said ray said very clearly that the issue of the displays the 150000 displaced has been tackled and everybody agreed that they need to return home but no one found a way to bring normalcy to those areas now the u.n. recognized government in tripoli has been saying all along that it wants. half the forces to pull back all the way to do 3 april 2019 positions that's basically go all the way back to benghazi something have to hasn't agreed upon before and still hasn't agreed upon now and so where to no.
9:07 pm
well i mean there are 3 tracks the military track the economic track and a political track there was an idea that if you managed to reach some sort of cease fire then that would be a pillar for you to other tracks to go ahead now that sense l.m.i. is due to leave geneva at any point now he is due in cairo on sunday where there will be an economic conference for libya how to bring investment to libya how to help libya out how to you know sort of bring that economy back back on par especially that you have an ongoing oil blockade at the moment which is costing libya about $55000000.00 a day because the production went from $1300000.00 barrels to now about $72000.00 barrels per day that's according to the us and selim and then there's a date of february 26th that will be the political track that's probably the most
9:08 pm
difficult file that will be tackled but there is also a feeling really that if you don't have some sort of cease fire on the ground then it will be very difficult to talk about anything politically and try to find any kind of political unity among these 2 warring sides. in geneva for now thank you. well after a brief respite in china the rate of new corona virus infections is again increasing the number killed is on track to surpass the sars total 17 years ago well as $720.00 chinese people have died from the new virus in addition an american woman and a man both from japan both passed away in han where the break started hong kong has begun a 2 week mandatory quarantine for all arrivals from mainland china while in japan
9:09 pm
thousands of cruise ship passengers remain in quarantine so it says in the ports of yokohama have confirmed 64 cases on poor it's what the world health organization says it sends a good international team of investigators to china as early as monday. yes we have submitted names and i got a response actually today so the team lead the team leader will be leaving either monday already tuesday that's what we have a me at now and then the rest of experts will also for last event welcome to you has this report from beijing. the owners of this luxury cruise ship describe it as a home away from home and for those on board there's now no choice about 3700 people on the diamond princess are being quarantined for at least 2 weeks off of japan's yokohama ports that's after more than 60 tested positive for corona virus
9:10 pm
we are all instructed to stay in our own cabin. you know that people from the insurer haven't been allowed up there on and they may have had a chance to interact although they've been instructed to stay a metre or from each other so it's hard to read. the mood of the other passengers without a contact with them i see you know some people are very worried on the internet and social media. japan is already dealing with cases of the virus and has imposed new border controls to stop it spreading it turned away another cruise ship that had sailed from china. the world health organization says there's no need for alarm there's over 3700 people in crew and this is after extensive searching for cases and testing and testing of many many people so if i don't get my month's wrong that's that's less than 2 percent of people so. it's still a bad it's not a great number it does show the virus has spread in the ship but again let's be
9:11 pm
careful here not to overreact the outbreak that began in china has spread to at least 25 countries in kazakhstan there were reports of violence between cars and the ethnic quake meeting over fears of coronavirus. chinese restaurants and businesses have reportedly been burnt down singapore has increased its alert level after new cases of corona virus not linked to previous infections or travel to china of course it. people are rushing to supermarkets to stock up on food and essential goods and around the world more people are buying masks and what's called personal protective equipment or people pushing up prices increasing shortages the world is facing severe disruption in the market for person and for president and protective equipment the mondays have 200 times higher than normal and prizes to 20 times higher. the un agency says more than 80 percent of
9:12 pm
corona virus cases globally reported can be considered mild and is calling for nations to work together to fight the outbreak in ruhani a 2nd emergency hospital with beds for 1600 coronavirus patients has been opened china's president xi jinping has declared what he calls a people's war on the virus saying no effort is being spared in fighting the epidemic but there is growing criticism of the chinese government's handling of the crisis social media is flooded with complaints and attempts by police and other government officials to nischelle cover up the outbreak then silencing the doctors who 1st sounded the alarm for china's leaders this is increasingly a battle on 2 fronts against the virus itself and the discontent it's thought katrin e.u. al-jazeera dating. and as the virus spreads around the world members of chinese and other asian communities say fear and racism are spreading to chinese tourists have
9:13 pm
spoke of being spatter while visiting european cities like fairness some others in milan have use social media to call for their children to be kept away from chinese classmates or petition to ban chinese people from malaysia received almost half a 1000000 signatures in one week well roy junger is a program associate specializing in u.s. china relations at the wilson center joins us on skype from gaithersburg in maryland good to have you with us on the news or these are just a few examples have been countless others anecdotal evidence on social media what do you make of this what do you think is behind this. well thanks for having me on i think that in this time of crisis people really want to reach for answers that seem really really convenient for them and this actually starts i think in china because the epicenter of the coronavirus crisis is in the presence
9:14 pm
of who bay you are seeing in china villages blockading people from who bay. undergoing manhunts or people that are from the province or from will on so on and so forth and here in the united states where i live. this reflex of reaching for easy answers extends to the racialization of people of east asian descent of chinese descent and seeing the disease vectors whether or not that's accurate is not necessarily the 1st thing on people's minds and how much of this you think is starting to the fact that this is very much a situation where people are fearful not just people within china but also a robot world so the dogs seem to be a lack of trust when it comes to the facts that are available and how to deal with this virus how much do you think that is a factor or is this just simply racism no questions asked. well it's
9:15 pm
not a cut and dry story of racism because we are dealing with an outbreak that is in no small part something that we can attribute to how the chinese governance model works particularly the non-central chinese government the thing that is making a lot of people in china angry right now is that provincial officials sat on the information that there was a potential outbreak for about a month and then their. inefficiencies in handling the current virus outbreak in the aftermath really raised a lot of trust issues and so people sort of project some of these trust issues they have with the chinese governance model or with chinese government officials to the chinese d.s. for more broadly and just from
9:16 pm
a human life oh how with these examples the anecdotal evidence of the c.e.o. before or on twitter being shared why the things that people on the receiving end of had to do with this just given the pressure that the people in china. are how is this impacting people on a human level. well on a human level it's never pleasant to be associated with the with the viral outbreak people can try to respond to it with you know this isn't something that. myself or my family is contributing to they can respond with staring stories of some of the challenges they've gone through but overall it really comes back to different communities around the world reaching for their working together to try to resolve this issue or continuing to
9:17 pm
reach for those really really simple reflex of conclusions and that's that something that i think the east asian community is experiencing racism can't fight alone ok thank you so much for sharing your analysis are your thoughts here on the al-jazeera news or thank you what's more still to come in this news hour including after a televised debate 7 hopefuls are vying to take on donald trump for the white house and they're facing yet another primary vote hurdle. tarts occurs hotter than it's ever been we'll ask if it's a blip or a consequence of our warming worlds. and in sports i glance or face a real test in florence is the least qualified for next season's champions league itself.
9:18 pm
but forces in orleans are casting their ballots in a general election that could see the biggest change in irish politics in generations with more on this let's cross to mary in the money in our european broadcast center. yes that's right the irish prime minister is facing a major struggle to hold on to power in this election which has been dominated by concerns about the cost of living and the availability of housing it's a vote that could change the country's political landscape for britain reports from the capital dublin a 3rd force could be emerging in islands traditional 2 party system. the buzzword of this election campaign was change ireland's economy may be the fastest growing in the e.u. but the people here are struggling with soaring house prices and years long waiting
9:19 pm
lists for public health care the desire for change is one of the expected to oust the t. shirt leo veronica of the female party who nonetheless put on a brave face as he cast his vote his main challenger me haul martin of pheno for will also try to look relaxed as his calling station in the city of cork but it seems the tide is turning against both the main parties this young person carrying out i have a lot of fears about what the future is going to hold with climate change and how that's going to affect my life in the future so i hope that the greens can have a fair amount of say and how ireland shapes a teacher i voted for alternatives to. so i don't really want to go independent but basically just some kind of alternative sort of status quo. shin fein is the left wing nationalist republican party previously regarded as the political wing of the paramilitary group the ira now shedding those associations and remolding itself as
9:20 pm
a progressive alternative to its very important states today's the day that the people are in charge and every single vote he believes tells the strength of his campaign that they want to change nonpolitical factors by also influence the outcome of this election is the 1st saturday poll since 1918 store winds are sweeping across the island from the west bringing gusts of 120 kilometers an hour slap bang in the middle of polling day a major rugby international guard just to get through the gate not so as our parents morning got a few jobs on and i got both up to about 9 o'clock this morning and have you voted already you know. that gave his vote and i'm sorry i can't believe that it is really. but it's a bow. counting of the ballots won't start until sunday morning and the most likely outcome of this election is a coalition government if shin fein chooses to enter that coalition government it
9:21 pm
would be an extraordinary outcome and could open the door to a referendum for a united ireland and even if the party chooses to stay in opposition the days of 2 party dominance here appear to be well and truly over paul brennan al-jazeera dublin at south cross city of park in the irish capital dublin a visibly hang in paul's report there this is an election that could really alter the political landscape why does there appear to be this backlash against iraq. well firstly if the polls are to believed indeed island is bracing itself for a huge shift in its political landscape as we heard there and pull support irish politics has been dominated for generations by the 2 main centrist parties finegan and feel full but they have been accused of failing to address some critical issues here in ireland when it comes to housing health care homelessness the spiraling
9:22 pm
cost of child care the list goes on saying that low overright because profile of the international stage has grown exponentially as he's led very tough negotiations with the united kingdom or breaks it path and of course let's not forget when the u.k. leaves the e.u. ireland does have the potential to fill the gap left behind becoming something of a bridge between the wider world and the european union but many wholly override personally to blame for failing to be the tide that lifts all boats here there is an entire generation of young people who have been unable to be able to afford rents and those those are the kind of people that may well be now deciding to vote for the likes of sinn fein well for more on this i'm joined now by somebody knows a lot more than me it's donica cohen who is as been written extensively on irish politics over the years is the director of research at top in-situ university school of law and governance thank you so much for joining us firstly how do you
9:23 pm
explain the surgeon support for sinn fein well as you've suggested irish politics has traditionally being handled on the power essentially between phina fall and feeney gave us the largest archy's but there's such an upper tight for change now it's really the mantra that's captured the imagination of the electorate have proven increasingly frustrated to norm willing to accept that the logical alternative to funa gale is a few a fall that government and shin fein is the largest party who is neither of those parties has benefited from that in many ways we couldn't have predicted this search for shit. they did very badly last year in the local and european elections and in the presidential elections and that's one of the reasons they didn't put forward so many candidates in this elections they want benefits to the full extent from the surge but there's certainly an upper tide for change and she seems to have captured a particular case and as i mentioned live iraq has international standing has expanded exponentially in brics in negotiations what has he done wrong here how is he let people down but home here in ireland there are 10000 people without a house
9:24 pm
a home they're living in hotels and emergency accommodation there are huge on preset and the long queues at hospitals so essentially what the leader of routers image abroad justifiably so was of a statesman who negotiated very well for ireland breaks that but this was not a divisive issue within ireland all the party supported him on this so he wasn't going to gain any particular credit for that negotiating stance and then on the issue of the economy recovering this is the other major pitch the economy is recovering all the macro economic indicators indicate this but it's not been felt universally throughout our in and especially in the housing and health of the health sectors and given given the ocean feigns thought he passed when it comes to associations with the privacy group in the ira and also the fact that shim fein say that they want to hold a referendum on unifying ireland within 5 years how will that go down here in ireland has not been a defining issue at all it hasn't been an issue in the campaign but opinion polls consistently show that of the vast majority of people in this state are in favor of
9:25 pm
irish unity however ill defined that is shin fein as you know have recently gone back into government in northern ireland if of course they were to play a role in government in the republic they would be in government in both sides of our lives and that would of course obviously enhance the argument for a border poll or unity referendum in the near future ok got to go thank you very much we'll leave it there all voting continues until 10 g.m.t. this evening as you heard there paul supporter that awful lot of attention has been focused on the rugby match which island one so there may be a bit of late minute voting before the. final deadline we know also that a huge storm is currently lashing the west coast of ireland the winds of change could be blowing in more ways than one here you go thanks very much dave park with all the latest from dublin we'll bring you won the election of course for now i see you a bit later at 900 g.m.t. in that just over half an hour from now let's get back to hala into. thank you mariam now russian and turkish delegates are meeting to discuss fighting in syria

a national weather forecast well some good news here across the eastern part of the mediterranean the big storm system is finally making its way out now we saw a lot of problems in terms of snow across turkey we will still see some residual snow pushing into the caspian as well down across much of the west to middle east we're talking about temperatures still quite low for this area so damascus only a high here on sunday of 5 jerusalem of 6 and by the time we get to monday slowly creeping back up in terms of those temperatures but still quite cloudy across much of the region here in doha though expect to see a warm day as we go towards sunday we do expect to see $27.00 degrees clouds in the forecast by the evening timeframe it is going to be windy we could be seeing some blowing dust as well by the time we get towards monday the winds still are in the forecast temperature dropping to 20 but monday and into tuesday it is going to be 19 as the forecast high there well across parts of libya as well as into egypt of course the winds have died down that's the good news there we're still seeing some clouds across much of the area so for cairo expect to see

always time to reduce the effects that might happen in the future when you're a very hot planet we can do things to reverse what's happening today in some instances but it's not realistic to expect our planet to cool even if we all reduce our emissions to a net 0 as people hope will happen you know in 2 or 3 decades time that's not going to cool the planet again and so we're already committed to some sea level rise and that's where we also need governments and people to be prepared for what's going to be happening in coastal parts of many countries by the end of this century people will experience flooding more frequently than they do today ok andrew shepherds great to get your thoughts and your analysis thank you so much for speaking to us here at al-jazeera thank you. now it's strawberry harvest time for farmers in gaza most of the put to use their is bad for customers

one season and 2001. success for us will not be measured in the 1st game the 1st weekend or even the 1st season we're taking a long term view and we understand what we have to earn our stripes the fans so there are no hard and fast metrics for the 1st season and we're simply looking forward to game going by introducing our form of football to the world if you love football you're going to love the x f l it will be familiar football in 100 yard field moving the ball down the field for downs at a time that people are accustomed to but we have some real innovations that we think make the game faster uptempo and safer for our players us sports broadcaster michael carlson believes the league faces a huge commercial and sporting challenge. my gut feeling right now is that it's probably going to be a miss in the long term and the question will be how long how deep the pockets are in able to in order to sustain the league the problem the excess faces is
