because through say the people who are looking for you the justice system. at least $23.00 people now killed is a thai soldier goes on a gun rampage but he's have surrounded the shopping mall where he's believed to still be inside. i know i'm maryam namazie in london you're watching al-jazeera also coming up on the program a team of global health experts is assembled to investigate the corona virus outbreak in china as the number of deaths edges towards the total killed by salas. a push for aid lip turkey sends in a huge column of reinforcements as syrian government forces take more ground

raising fears of a confrontation. about the brand of live in dublin where voting has just finished in arlen's general election we'll have the exit poll for you shortly . but we continue with our developing story from thailand security forces there of stormed a shopping center after a mass shooting which has left at least 23 people dead that's the latest figure more than 30 others have been wounded after a soldier went on a gun rampage in the city of karachi the army sergeant then took people hostage in a shopping mall in the city center he is still thought to be inside but is not known if people are trapped with him while in head a small. late on a saturday afternoon a shopping mall in thailand came under attack a gunman opened fire at
1:02 am
a time when it would have been at its busiest. here he can be seen firing multiple rounds towards people and passing cars. people found whatever cover they could after he entered the mall panic shoppers ran out the day coming to a terrifying hearing and. the number of casualties is not yet confirmed as the situation is still ongoing we have been trying to bring out whoever we can 1st a minute and we will gradually save others who are still stuck inside this was the heavily armed gunman seeming to walk casually through the mall he had earlier be named by police as jack reponse tamam a 32 year old soldier in the thai army he began his rampage hours earlier by killing a commanding officer on a military base outside the city as he continued his murderous spree he posted updates on social media including this one where he complained that his finger was sore from pulling the trigger so many times gun violence is common in this country
1:03 am
but not on the scale this will be remembered as one of thailand's daucus days. away as been following the story from bangkok what do we know about the situation inside the shopping mall. well 1st piece of news as you mentioned is that the death toll has climbed now according to local hospital officials that death toll now 232 police officers believed to have been killed by the gunman the situation seems to be calm for the moment although in the last few hours we did hear more multiple rounds of gunfire coming from within the moral itself still not clear whether there is anyone still in there we also saw a lot of activity in recent hours outside the mall with some people who had been inside there for hours while the gunman was in there as well coming out of the mall
1:04 am
including some injured who were of course taken by waiting ambulances to hospital so it seems as if the security forces the police and the soldiers who are in there are having trouble bringing this to an end he has done a fairly good job of evading capture he's a trained serving member of the tie our army so will be used to the tactics of the soldiers who are trying to find him clearly he is well trained in using weapons and is believed to have several guns in there with him including automatic weapons so it seems as if like i say they are struggling to bring this to an end this is been dragging on for many many hours now it began at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on saturday and it's now just gone 5 in the morning on sunday and. the struggle to capture the gunman is being. affected somewhat by fear that there
1:05 am
could be civilians inside perhaps the police the security forces taking a more cautious approach and there have been. gunshots automatic gunfire heard but they're trying to take a cautious approach i guess to avoid any further loss of life. yes and the mall at the time when this attack 1st started would have been extremely busy it was a saturday late afternoon early evening also a public holiday in thailand so it would have been adds absolute peak in terms of the number of people inside this mall which is right in the in the central city part of. it's a fairly new mall very attractive to people who live in that area to go to the mall on the weekend for shopping or just as a place to meet friends so it would have been extremely busy we haven't received a number of people who were inside at the time that the attack started those details haven't yet come out from the police are all from local government
1:06 am
officials and there were reports we have to state as well that he was holding a number of people hostage now we're not sure whether that was the case officially the police did say that some were being held hostage or indeed it was simply a case of some people as you mentioned being caught in the area perhaps between the security forces and the gunman himself so there is a chance that they could still be people inside the mall trapped in a place they simply can't get out of the security forces have been thought of being going through we are told floor by floor clearing areas of the mall to ensure people can get out of this safely but also of course trying to hunt the gunman down which again they haven't managed to do so far and as you say the death toll has now risen to 23 that is still alive ongoing situation inside that shopping mall and thailand thank you very much wayne.

polls are now closed in ireland in the general election where prime minister is facing a battle to hang on to power campaigning was dominated by concerns about the cost of living in the. vail ability of housing and its expected island's folk party shin fein will make big gains let's go to paul brennan who is in dublin and also paul they have indeed made some big gains 22.3 percent according to one exit poll for shin fein. yeah the exit polls are used as an early indicator because the counting of the votes takes such a long time on the single transferable vote system and the fact that the counting of the actual ballot papers themselves doesn't even start until 9 am on sunday morning so the expectation and to suppression of this exit poll was enormous bear
1:08 am
in mind going into this election the last couple of days the final opinion polls before polling day had shin fein polling somewhere around 25 percent and because fianna gael party that down well somewhere around 17 percent joining me is lisa keenan she's a lecturer in political science from trinity college if i tell you that lisa gave a little exclamation that could have been painted could have been amusement when the result came out and i tell you that every single that the 3 main parties have each polled 22 percent according to the exit poll they said what do you make of it well i think it's going to be very soon to be making act and of protections about the number of seats on the base that this exit poll and whatever it does tell us 2 things so 1st of all. the search engine paints a point that we did see through the period of the campaign is actually real and historically pain has been better in the polls and then a sort of underperformed going into the election and also it tells us that
1:09 am
generally the polls have been pretty accurate as if you look at the poll of polls and these are sort of these figures are so defining in the middle of what has been asked to made it out there so it's going to make the matter very complicated when it comes to actually forming a government so the transfers are going to be even more important to me start watching the kind tomorrow when you say the transfers for our international viewers the transfers are the 2nd and 3rd choices of voters because each of those papers can be used multiple times in order to try and work out who exactly gets the their vote composition this isn't the finagling fin a foil have both said that they won't go into coalition with sinn fein despite inflames. strong showing here where does that leave them well it leaves the net pretty oakridge position and so 1st of all they've both been very strong as you say in saying that they won't go into coalition with champagne for various reasons they are more have any other kind of policy reasons they're very far apart in policy terms and beautiful has obviously been sort of very keen on playing on sort
1:10 am
of the historic ties of the party with the ira and also concerns around the sort of level of internal democracy in not party and for them it's quite tricky to sort of robock on what they've been saying and i think we're going to have to start looking to the smaller parties to see how they feel about working with sinn fein i think in particular a man ryan of the green party has such that he wants to talk to the smaller lachman parties offer the result to see if they can kind of come to some agreement on a package of policies that they'd be sort of willing to force with one of the larger parties. where as you say that the smaller parties could hold the key if you like to a majority of voters they want to change time and again they said change the other going to get change with a result like this well they're going to have a change in government we do know that the current government to. go in for 4 look how did so for nearly 100 years they're not going to get a different policy sweep in and take probably. well all the issues there is but if
1:11 am
she in pain is the party that they want fame has been a kind of it's similarly we know from the polls that voters have actually been saying that she thing is the party that they least want to go into government so realistically we don't actually know what these results are telling us just right now. but we will find out more as the hours pass a particular as the counting commences on sunday i will be that. show will definitely catch up with the poll in dublin a bit later on but just to give you a clear picture of those exit poll figures the poll was mentioning they have just been released and you can see that the result is extremely close. 2.4 percent of ocean fane have 22.3 percent and then the main opposition phina foyle on 22.2 percent so they are running neck and neck but of course i have been hearing it is quite a lengthy process and it will take some time before we get an accurate idea and just that bit more clarity on what government will take shape and what that

welcome back a look at the headlines now security forces in thailand have stormed a shopping center after a mass shooting left at least 23 people dead a soldier went on a gun rampage in several locations and is now for to be still inside that shopping mall. exit polls have been released in island general election and they show was practically a 3 way tie it means big gains for the republican shin fein party and it looks like a shake up for the political landscape that traditionally dominated by 2 main parties. and the world health organization is sending an expert team to china next week to help it cope with the outbreak of the corona virus more than 720 people have been killed on the chinese mainland. now peace talks between representatives of libya's un recognized government and after it
