realities on the field and by the end of february the regime must be pushed behind observation whatever is needed on the ground when we are not going to have any hesitation and we are going to act on it. while we'll have the latest on the fighting in syria province with c.n.n. . in just a few minutes for us to have in istanbul for us we heard a very tough message from president. is he likely though to follow through with this threat of more military involvement in syria. we're basically have had 2 messages an ultimatum for the syrian government forces to pull out from the areas they controlled and to move beyond the turkish miti outburst by the end of february and warning that this time if there is any syrian attack against the military outpost and if any turkish soldier is hurt this is going to trigger a harsh reaction from the turkish government and i think president because of our
4:03 pm
divine is coming under mounting pressure from the turkish people to show a tougher stance when it comes to the latest developments and however i have to say that there is still a wiggle room for a political compromise and this explains the full call between him and russian president vladimir putin and the turkish delegation which is going to travel to moscow to try to negotiate the terms of a deal would pave the way for a ceasefire to be implemented and also for the syrian army to put out from beyond those military asked those other thing that turkey is have been sort of encouraged by different signs particularly statements from the u.s. syria on boy james jeffrey who met with the turkish diplomats a while ago the minister of foreign affairs and he said that the u.s. backs the stance of turkey and he denounced the attacks targeting turkish

soldiers in which 13 so turkish soldiers were killed over the last few weeks now the challenge though fully is going to be in the coming days what kind of terms both turkey and russia will discuss when it comes to the implementation of the cease fire agreement crossed the promise because reality has completely changed on the ground the terms of the deal of 2018 are completely irrelevant to the point where some of the turkish media aspers though it meant. in debian it's. been no taken over by the syrian government to the point where the his army in some of those areas is under siege by the syrian army thank you for that live for us in istanbul let's cross to sin and. bob inside syria cinema as we've heard president are the ones saying that syrian government forces
4:05 pm
have until the end of this month to withdraw from turkish observation polls what is currently the situation on the ground and is there any indication that syrian forces might be indeed turning around. well 4 is so far and there's no indication that the syrian government forces are pulling back from where they are right now which is not included in the the escalation plan a great by turkey russia iran and syria through a stand sochi process is so far turkey has been reinforcing its materials aeration force inside syria since february 1st and in the last couple of days as actually in the last one week we have witnessed that the syrian government forces are also in hand saying their military positions nearby the turkish military post so so far i can say that there is no stop back neither by turkey nor the syrian government and there is on the fighting and displacement on the ground here inside there is
4:06 pm
nothing else than that there is just too many tarion tragedy and just military tension fawley and it has been the sway for a while especially since the syrian government has has begun violating the. procedures in the the escalation zone since last april intensifying get through all this and finally since the 1st of december they have been attacking more and more in advancing from south to north and currently. we know that the syrian government forces have bombarded which is which is between if the city center and surround area also in our other. area the syrian will barman's have been underway for the last 3 days and even just a couple of hours ago against civilians died so this place meant fighting and killing is on the ground here and as the syrian government advances rapidly from
4:07 pm
south to north and 1st bombard the area to evacuate those villages to be able to enter. more freely you have more people. we're coming to the turkish border which is increasing the pressure the stress on the turkish border that has been sealed since 2016 so people and there are almost 4000000 civilians inside most of whom are waiting to cross to turkey and then to europe and this is a huge pressure just why prisons are down south that. turkey is trying to deal with this pressure inside if there are some works under way. and they are trying to find a solution to this displacement but as long as the syrian government's advance continues this way harshly more civilians are expected to be displaced and this means more people are left out on the streets and without shelters and lots of

4:12 pm
one of the passengers who doesn't have the virus but he's on the quarantine he spoke to us early and says most of the passengers on the ship have not been tested you know it's it's really hard to measure an overall. mindset for the passengers as a whole and in fact the only information i really get about what other passengers are thinking is what i see on social media that they're sharing or in the news that they've reported to journalists because we're. trying to our cabin we're not among the groups that are allowed out onto the deck because we have our own balcony you can get. fresh air and and light there and we don't associate it we don't go out and talk to the other people on the balconies because we just want to maintain the isolation i know that they have and men when we return to yokohama initially last week the japanese health officials did come on board and take

everyone's temperatures and based on that and and self reporting of symptoms they identified the initial batch of people who then got the actual test for the virus and since then they've been testing people who come down to the medical center complaining of of the symptoms but the only ongoing monitoring of everyone else is that we've been provided with her mom and others and asked to take our temperatures and then if you identify me the high temperature your your supposed to go down to the medical center so. i haven't researched her to figure from the captain about exactly how many people have been tested but it's a very small portion of the. pope francis has dismissed a proposal to ordain older married men to the priesthoods bishops from latin america for the controversial plan to address a shortage of priests in the amazon it would have challenge their role in catholics
4:14 pm
addition of celibacy but the pontiff says the solution to the priest shortage is to send missionaries to the region and speak to algiers john heilemann in rio de janeiro forests john i imagine they'll be disappointment after this move by the pope what exactly was a council that was on the table and why was it put forward. yeah as you were just saying that it probably will be a bit of disappointment especially as it was latin american bishops who forward this proposal last october i think as you mentioned it's important to clarify the proposal wasn't the priests who were already all day and should be allowed to get married it was for all the sorts of married men of some standing in these communities be allowed to them be ordained to make up for a bit of a chronic shortage of priests in the midst of region this is a region that's composed of knowing countries really have parts and souls in the summers and region and it's estimated that at least 85 percent over villages in the
4:15 pm
amazon region all able to celebrate mass every week so there is a real shortage here in this week one of the ideas to try and get to grips with it now the pope since that said that another solution could be sending missionaries to this area instead of going for the other option which was older married men be being able to become priests and there will sort of a thaw in the move conservative part of the catholic church that this might be the thin end of the wedge that even the right now is very specific to the army as a region the worry was that it could spread and start to end the tradition of celibacy in the catholic church and so i is going to affect the region that. we talked about that chronic shortage and that's not just touching the for the amazon region in latin america as a whole this is a real bust in of the catholic church brazil actually the country that we're in
4:16 pm
right now this has the largest number of catholics in the world but there has been threats and not just because of the shortage of people wanting to become priests also because of the incursion especially of evangelical christianity in brazil actually in 2022 it's projected a 3rd of the population is going to be evangelical christians and that trend is sort of reflected as well in many other countries in latin america so the catholic church here is sort of facing their sort of threats if you will to its continued popularity and maybe in the long run even survival but pope francis one of the reasons that he did want to concentrate on this question of allowing possibly marry priests was that he thought that it would over shadow some of the other things that he wanted to concentrate on especially for the amazon region he's written that region is facing an ecological disaster so he wanted to sort of concentrate as well apparently on the environment and on the impacts on the environment there so other

in the race to choose someone to go up against donald trump in november adding to the uncertainty and so nature of the race amy club was shocked surged to 3rd place after a strong debate performance last week while once favorite joe biden slumps to faith patty cohen has more from manchester in new hampshire. was he was expected to win and he did it. is just about being trolled it is about transforming this country. it is about hugging their courage to take on wall street sure it's companies the drug companies the fossil fuel industry the military industrial complex. not far behind former soft bend indiana people to
4:19 pm
judge a relative newcomer so many of you decided that a middle class mayor in a veteran from the industrial midwest was the right choice to take on this president not inspire. of that experience but because these were not the expected front runners but with former vice president joe biden and senator elizabeth warren faltering new faces came to the front voters said that was a big reason so many were undecided up until the last minute some of the front runners i'm not sure i think their ideas are good but i'm not sure they have the right path and they have the right ideas so i think that's why people are now leaning this way and kind of at this last minute like this is a strong possibility. coming in 3rd another unexpected candidate moves to the front of the pack minnesota senator a.v. club which are i mean. and i would be donald trump.
4:20 pm
new hampshire is important for momentum attention and money raised clear tonight from the numbers that we are not going to win this race 2 of the lesser known candidates quit after this vote but all the top contenders said they were staying in you know remember and we're just. still have 98 percent of our delegate for our nomination up for grabs and americans in every part of the country are going to make their voices heard in exit polls democratic voters made clear their number one priority is finding someone who can beat double trouble but they're split on the best way to do that from the far left or the center leaving new hampshire it's still not clear which camp will win in the end pedicle who else is 0 men tester new hampshire. for more analysis on the new hampshire primary i'm not joined by johnston sage mitchell who is an assistant professor teaching comparative and american politics at northwestern university here in quetta thank you so much for
4:21 pm
coming and so a big night for bernie sanders but not far from him and amy doing quite well as well what does this mean so say about what is on voters' minds to democratic primary voters minds as they head towards november. great thanks for having me you're absolutely right that this was a big night for sanders but a judge and but really the big story is amy close. for a candidate that was consistently polling in the single digits to come with almost 20 percent of the actual primary vote is massive in the debate last 3rd last friday she called for empathy and experience in the white house and asked the voters of new hampshire to take a chance on her and they did and this really makes her a viable candidate going forward in this problem which voters have shifted towards her well some of the. right some of the exit polling do show that those white college educated women who had previously been supporting elizabeth warren may have
4:22 pm
shifted towards any closer shar right of course as a so a long way to go until november so a lot of states coming up next is nevada and south carolina and i think all eyes there will be on the minorities folds african-americans especially in south carolina who are they likely to turn towards excellent question i mean you know nevada is really important so is south carolina because now we introduce further diversity to this primary process we've heard about the voter mindsets in iowa midwest new hampshire northeast but now we move to the west and the south and as you said we bring in latino is in nevada and african-americans in south carolina and these are very important constituencies of the democratic party it's important what they think these are big tests for people to judge and amy chua because they have to show that they have appeal beyond their largely white midwest demographics
4:23 pm
are also a big test for joe biden right very disappointing 1st 2 results for him he's pinning all his hopes on the strong support that he enjoys with the african-american community in south carolina right but you know what 2 weeks is a long time to wait. so if he doesn't do well in south carolina do you think that will be the end for him to be honest i think he has to do well i design and experience in his to do well in nevada to have a chance because i'm not entirely sure that african-american voters are going to wait around for a candidate that they no longer see as viable or about michael bloomberg of course he didn't take part in the new hampshire primary and he's actually not face voters just yet is he appeared as a bowl candidates for the democrats he. is is the $1000000.00 question right now he's got a lot of i should say $1000000000.00 prize got a lot of money. we don't know because he hasn't been on the ballots yet and he's not going to be until super tuesday which is march 3rd this is his strategy to avoid these 4 early states to go for the super tuesday states where 14 states will
4:24 pm
will will go to the polls he's been saturating the airwaves and he has been polling pretty well in california for example but this strategy might backfire because some candidates as we saw any closure in others are getting serious momentum from these early candidates so what will happen in march 3rd we just have to wait and see all right john stand where do you see see things heading over the next few months i mean can bernie sanders if he's the nominee be donald trump in november sanders is of course a democratic socialist where the progressive agenda is america ready for that another great question i think that it's very telling that every democratic debate the candidates have taken pains to express that no matter what they are going to be unified behind each other and to be honest no matter who ends up being the nominee they're going to need that unified front all the other candidates and their supporters are going to have to get behind them it's hard to beat an incumbent
4:25 pm
president right joslin very interesting to get your thoughts on this thank you very much for joining us on the office here thank you. not iraq where security forces have reopened a bridge in central baghdad that had been blocked since anti-government protests started in october as part of an effort to restore normal operations in the city less than 2 weeks after mohammed tuffy callao he was elected as prime minister designate simona fulton has more from baghdad. sinnett bridge here in baghdad has reopened for the 1st time since anti-government demonstrations began and of october you can once again see traffic is moving across this bridge over the river tigris now of course this bridge has been extremely important throughout the protests and has been the location of some of the major standoffs between protesters and government forces we have seen some major attacks against the most heinous occur on this bridge so as of now we only have one bridge that still remains closed here in
4:26 pm
the budget battle of course what the demonstrators have been trying to do here is to obstruct bridges and roads as part of a civil disobedience campaign to try to bring daily life to hold they want to prevent people from going about going to work they want to prevent businesses from operating all as part of an effort to try to force the government to listen to their demands now since the appointment of mohamed tawfik allow we as the prime minister designate shia cleric monk that al sadr who has until now mostly supported the demonstrators has called on them to open up roads to open up bridges penalties against those who don't comply and of course the demonstrators will not be happy about the opening of this bridge but some people are likely to welcome this move because as you can see here there are a lot of businesses who are located in proximity to this bridge in proximity to this road and they have suffered greatly as a result of this closure they have been called up inside clashes between the
4:27 pm
demonstrators and security forces we have seen even some of these shops being burned in the clashes between those 2 sides so these business owners are likely to welcome the return of normal life like it's really see an increase in business once again now it remains to be seen how to demonstrators who will react to this move and whether they will try to retake this bridge of course we have. at the frontlines if you want to call them that all of these demonstrations have shifted from one place to another but the cynic which has always been very important for the demonstrators and some of them have said that they will try to take it back to what we have to watch and see is how to security forces will react we have seen security for the floyd on top of this bridge and it remains to be seen whether one protesters will try to retake this area where the security forces will use force to make sure that this bridge and these streets remain open. on time now for a check of the world weather with kevin and flooding in the u.s.

that's ray foley just last week we're dealing with a major storm across united states that storm brought tornadoes flooding a lot of snow and ice thing then just in less than one week we're dealing with another storm system that is developing right now you can see the clouds right here coming in off texas into the central plains this is going to be developing but we have seen already saturated ground in alabama i want to show you some video they're dealing with flooding right now and more rain is coming you can see the high water here of course is a very flat land area very close to the gulf of mexico the water is slowly pushing down many rivers and of course it takes time for all that water inland to make its way towards the gulf so unfortunately they are going to be seeing more rain i want to show the forecast map right now as we go currently right now the area of interest is down here and texas is the area of low pressure behind it it's quite cold dallas right now 6 degrees but with this system we're going to be seeing a lot of development as we go to the next couple of days pushing here across the eastern seaboard but it's not just this we could be seeing a lot of active severe weather with this front possibility of more tornadoes as

you're watching the news hour with me fully back to pull out a reminder of our top stories turkey's president has warned syria against further provocations in the last remaining rebel stronghold. and says he will strike syrian forces anywhere if they target tega she troops it's china has announced a series of new monetary policies to protect its economy against the corner virus come break and formula one has confirmed this postponing the chinese grand prix in china i more than 1000 people have been killed since december. pope francis has dismissed a proposal to ordain married men to the priesthood bishops from latin america put forward the controversial plan to address
4:32 pm
a shortage of priests in the amazon this sort of challenge for women catholic tradition of celibacy. let's take a closer look now at pope francis decision not to endorse a proposal to met married men service priests in the amazon region we're joined by michael walsh who is an historian of the papacy and the author of the secret world of state he's live in london thank you so much for being with us mr walsh. many people anticipated an expected that pope francis would give the green light to allowing married men to become phrase why do you think he backed away from this decision he does have a reputation after all as well as a reformer. well he has i mean i think it's a great embarrassment for him as a matter of fact because he's all in favor of synod does it all the words all in favor of involving other people in decision making in the church. he talked about it a great deal and he was a synod on the amazon practically on his own original home doorsteps is off from
4:33 pm
argentina video on his i hope doorstep and he has actually denied one of the requests that the senate came up with the automation of mounted men he made it fairly clear some years ago well the fact that. very few years back that he wasn't very in favor of optional celibacy. ordain married men so it in a sense it should become a surprise but i think it was a surprise because after the after the senate you thought it of gaar long with it because that's what he has tried to do so do you think this was done in the interest of keeping the church together. well yes i think that's a very important issue for him. he. he. clearly doesn't want to doesn't like like an autocrat he doesn't order people about generally speaking but he he obviously has to make decisions. that keep the church together as you say that don't divide it and there's he's you know we may
4:34 pm
remember that fairly recently the former pope benedict the 16th. was supposedly altogether correct but supposedly co-author of a book which attacked the notion of dating a married man so. he spoke benedict. does represent quite a strong current of the church but. the pope has always been actually sympathetic to benedict on this issue he's not a radical in that sense what is more radical in the amazon standard and which he has committed himself to is a greater enculturation a greater accommodation of the church friends of the needs of the people in the amazon basin and yet here you wonder why this is still an issue such a polarizing issue especially at a time when the church you know there's sort of shortages a freeze in places like north america and europe and the amazon and the pope says a solution to to this sort shortage of is to send missionaries to the region do you
4:35 pm
agree with that is that something feasible. well obviously they have the mission the mission is to the region in the past or the have been more ordinations. in recent years as more people offer to serve the priesthood in latin america than they used to be i think that true of greater proportion of people but. the. the the. the other issue would go to the or not they should women also to help to fill up that vacuum rather aleisha women to the bishop of making the deacons. which are sort of step towards the priesthood but that is in a sense also been ruled out where that was also rubbed ruled out by the senate by a lot of people expecting that that might have happened but the ordination of about it meant certainly it was a very popular idea he's going against it the whether or not of course i think it's questionable to be quite honest i think it's questionable whether or not the ordination about a man would have added very many to the number of clergy but for the church of
4:36 pm
england which has made it clergy there's a lot of women that ordination is actually also not attracting a lot of mental hood to the priesthood that's michael walsh thank you very much for talking to us about this thank you for your time. now a company that sold coal generating machines to more than $100.00 countries was secretly owned by u.s. intelligence for decades according to the washington pols the cia and germany's spy agency regs swiss firm crypto ages devices to eavesdrop on clients iran saudi arabia and even the vatican had secret correspondence read and possibly shared with as many as 6 countries the firm was dissolved in 2018 early i spoke to one approach a director of the cyber security expert a firm that advises institutions across europe and i began by asking him just how extensive this intelligence gathering wise. it's very hard to say because but the

a number of foreign governments including iran nuclear rivals india and pakistan and even the vatican what i find surprising is that so many of these countries would be willing to open up their systems to one single company how do you think they were able to convince so many countries to go with them. honestly i mean i'm guessing that probably much of that but. this sounds sensible from the company itself so i'm guessing they just had good sales people in there probably both competition of the time and because you know that has had a good pedigree that the products every use had a good pedigree and you know many decades by the time of the cold war in this market sector and also i guess at the factory it was the swiss company resorts and being neutral as you've already sent and bought it some some cretins. u.s. president donald trump has praised attorney general william barr after one of his former white house advisers received a reduced prison sentence all for prosecutors investigating larger stone of. have

4:46 pm
we're destroying the area of a size of a football pitch of forest every 2 seconds so what we wanted to do with this report was to look at the economic costs of that destruction so we used for the 1st time a new methodology that combines analysis of how nature delivers benefits to the economy with a global economic trade model that looks at how economies sell goods to each other to look at how those nature losses will affect different countries in the world and it showed that overall we stand to lose at least 10 trillion dollars of global g.d.p. by 2050 so the the hardest hit countries in terms of percent of g.d.p. are of the poorest countries so a country like madagascar for example stands to lose 4 percent of g.d.p. per year by 2050 which is massive for for a country like madagascar would probably wipe out their growth prospects so yeah the poorest countries are the hardest hit but richer countries are the hardest hit
4:47 pm
in terms of absolute volumes of g.d.p. the u.s. japan and the u.k. of the top 3 countries to be hit and for them the risks are more related to coast on ability increased coast of on ability as a result of sea level rise but also as we've destroyed some of the natural capital things like sea grasses and mangroves and coral reefs that protect the coasts from storm surges and flooding so as a result of this nature loss they stand to lose a huge amount going forward. still ahead on al-jazeera in sport tiger woods aims for a record breaking of a trade where it all began as a 16 year old amateur. business ledgers his goal to buy no bra spall.

changes to the airplane are right the manuals are right the training is right its focus is to have the mikes back in service by the middle of this year one of the 1st things that has to happen before the 737 max can fly again is a certification test flight 500 u.s. aviation regulator the head of that agency has hinted that a test flight could take place soon but the still no timetable for the lifting of the ban approval to fly will also have to be obtained from dozens of aviation authorities with more than $400.00 planes grounded around the world process to get all of those back in the air is not going to happen overnight is probably more like a year or 2 at least because they've got to go in they've got to service is playing it. may not just be the impasse software that needs to be updated they may need to update software for the engines or lots of the other systems that are on the plane some supplies of boeing are laying off workers off to production of the 737 max was suspended last month and lines have had to cancel routes or keep older in service
