tribute to the victims of a far right extremist attack in germany. mary rain is a voting in parliamentary elections under the shadow of economic sanctions the turnout is expected to be low thousands of candidates have been barred from running by the national guardian council which is iran's constitutional watchdog and it includes dozens of members of the current parliament the u.s. has responded by imposing new sanctions on member members of that council accusing them of rigging the election we'll go live to our correspondent. she is in tehran so iranians certainly those in tehran of a heeding the call of the supreme leader to turn out in large numbers. walt it's so early in the day but we are seeing
11:02 am
a number of people that have lined up at the small square were each is a levy mosque in east terror on they have lined up over the past 2 and a half hours since the polls opened here and many of them we've been speaking to say it is their national jewish duty to vote regardless of whether or not. they agree with the candidates that have been approved i'll just show you the mosque that we're in right now in the process that these people go through to cast their votes they line up 1st and they register with their national id cards with the officials that are here that is done electronically they then move over to the other side and they hit the candidates they want to cast their votes for that is the list of the approved of people over 1500 candidates that have been approved to run in time on. the official locals here rather are selecting 30 members out of that list and then they come here and cast their ballots that you would ballot boxes at the station this is one of the over $6000.00 polling stations across the country today and we've also heard from president hassan rouhani you
11:03 am
voted already at the interior ministry and he urged all the iranians to come out and vote voter turnout is extremely important. during every election in iran but specifically this one because it is at a time when iran faces many many issues mainly the economic crisis that the country is facing as a result of a number of sanctions imposed on it by the united states and the international community so they see this as a true test for the system that is in place in this country and if i'm right in saying it also isn't this the 1st test of public opinion since those uprisings that we saw across the country over the proposed increase in the price of fuel. yes this is actually the 1st election that with the country has had since the united states withdrew from that nuclear deal and that deal is now very much in doubt and its future is in doubt and as
11:04 am
a result of that the country's economy has suffered tremendously present has some iranian november decided to hike up fuel prices overnight and that caused a series of protests across the country and this is one of the main reasons that many of the people that would have vote. for the reformist candidates in this election although a limited number of reforms candidates have been approved this they've told us that they are not likely to vote which is why we're most likely to see a very conservative parliament taking over in may of this year and we already have a very conservative edge of the sherry in the country and what will remain is the presidential election that is coming up next year and as a result of what will happen here today if the conservatives who are projected to take over the parliament they do so then we're likely to see very conservative presidential candidates and next year in that election so iran will move towards a very hard line conservative stance when it comes to dealing with the
11:05 am
international community this kind of rhetoric that we've seen from the foreign minister just about serif present hassan rowhani over the past few years is not likely to continue in the future. thank you very much for that also jabari there reporting live from tehran and now we can hear from our correspondent bernard smith he's. in central iran. the city and the province is a conservative stronghold in the last parliamentary elections and 26 to 10 of the 19 seats up for grabs went to an affirmative candidates and in this 165 of those 10 seats were won by conservatives this time around is 3600000 people eligible to vote and everyone who decides to come and vote us to choose from a list now of 809 different candidates most of those coming dates are conservative candidates the reformists they all almost all of them were

disqualified and when people are chosen from at least 2 they want a marker down about paper over there and then the vote is cast in the ballot box there are hopes in this part of the country for a strong turnout the government wants a strong turnout to show. the house. south korea has announced emergency measures to contain a growing corona virus outbreak there 156 cases of being confirmed now making it the worst of it in country outside china within the past 24 hours one person has died and there's been a surge of 52 new cases most of them linked to a church in the southern city of daegu this is measures millions to say inside and to wear face masks in the capital so mass gatherings and rallies have been banned in japan the last of the passengers deemed healthy on board the quarantined ship are now being allowed to go home they have had more than $500.00 cases of
11:07 am
infections and there's been quite a bit of criticism as to whether or not these current team measures have been effective in china itself 180 more deaths were reported on thursday along with more than 1100 new infections and within the past few minutes also south korea says the number of infections is now risen to 204 we'll go live to adrian brown in hong kong about the developments on the mainland 1st so here's rob mcbride with the latest from seoul. this all happened very quickly in the past couple of days suddenly we have moved to this basically almost an emergency level centered on daegu this outbreak a cluster of cases and in particular on a single church there in this city it's a medium sized city 2 and a half 1000000 people the most of the cases that have been reported dozens in fact
11:08 am
were members of a congregation of a particular church now it does seem as though this is spread between monks members of this congregation they are trying to find the initial source of it the authorities suspect possibly it could have been a 61 year old woman who was a member of this church congregation who would been to a couple of services at the church with hundreds of other fellow church goers even though she was showing symptoms of possibly coronavirus they are trying to make contact with all of these people and it is known that around a 1000 members of the congregation did it attend church services at this particular branch now the problem for the rest of south korea is that these congregation go as we're not just from this one city but from other parts of career who went back to their home cities their hometowns so municipalities across south korea are suddenly reporting all of these cases most of them linking back to the city of daegu right
11:09 am
now we can get a wager in brown in hong kong and adrian it's easy to to be drowned by the amount of statistics coming out of china but there have been more deaths there have been new infections reported as well where does it stand in terms of the strength of this fire is on the main. well what we're seeing martine is that the downward progression of this virus is in a sense the figures have been reversed because on thursday we learned that there were just under 400 new infections on friday that figure jumped by more than 1100 now the reason for that is that now discovering this virus has spread to a number of prisons including a women's prison in wu han as well as 2 other prisons outside of the province now several 100 prisoners are understood to have been infected and of course experts
11:10 am
are now trying to work out you know the route of transmission but it's certainly a worrying new development that this virus has now opened up on a new front within china also on friday state media has been carrying an important interview i think with one of the experts at the forefront of trying to contain this virus he's talked to. a disease expert and he's told state media that in recovered patients they're still seeing traces of the virus that means someone can seem perfectly healthy but still have the virus in their system also media reports here in hong kong say that a decision has now been made to cancel the national people's congress expected to be held in early march that's the biggest political event of the year in china that involves all china's top leaders as well as 3000 delegates from across the country an announcement is expected on monday following a meeting of the politburo standing committee but this in
11:11 am
a sense is almost like china's leaders taking action to in a sense protect themselves the the south china morning post newspaper here in hong kong also says the decisions be made to cancel the key economic forum that's also held in march and rules economists and financial experts politicians from around the world and also it's been confirmed that china will not be sending a senior official to a g 20 finance ministers meeting that's taking place in riyadh saudi arabia this weekend because of the virus edgerrin thanks for that adrian brown live in hong kong. well this is reported its 1st case of coronavirus it's in the lone body region and elsewhere iraq has closed its border with iran and stopped flights there after 2 rain ians died many global airlines have temporarily cancelled flights in mainland china and companies are warning of serious losses european airline group air france carolyn says it could wipe out up to $215000000.00 from its earnings by

hello floods remain the risk and the potential further problem in not just the british isles but this is what i'm showing here the moment this is the western side of england on the river 7 and this because the weather's been coming from the new land take for the last 2 months hitting northern europe it's not just the british isles denmark had no snow just rain a bit of flooding problem too for the next 24 hours or 48 hours you've got more rain coming into the british isles this strong southwest least not a stormy pattern is just more rain of course it all goes to its influence in the tension has done all winter moscow 6 gets an early spring it also sets up for this what is now a fairly good repeating pattern of a northerly breeze answer the genome of the adriatic giving some cold weather to turkey bit more snow to come the still snow for the high ground in scotland than in england is just not particularly code london's at 13 for example and i said rain is the problem to that persistent breeze in the eastern med has had an effect i've got temperatures behind by the way you see in stark cold in the warm up run it 20 there

a reminder of our main stories here about just their voting is underway in iran's national elections the overall turnout expected to be low particularly among reformist spaces after thousands of candidates were barred from running south korea has announced another spike in corona virus infections bringing the national total to $204.00 found the worst affected country outside china the government's imposing emergency measures. now the city's prime minister tom will not be appearing in court on friday to face murder and that murder charges. for 2nd wife because he's out of the country to ban is secretary says he's attending
11:16 am
a prearranged routine doctor's appointment in south africa the secretary says to bonnie will appear in court at a later date he was set to be charged with the murder of his 2nd wife the polo to barney who was shot there 2017 his current wife messiah to barneys also facing charges relating to the killing and she's denied any involvement let's go live to for me to miller she's in missouri. capital outside the courthouse for meter so what happens now if talked about on these. i was going to say escaped fled not the right word but he's at least in pretoria not where he should be to face these charges. one martin it's also interesting that the private secretary to the prime minister tabo has been at pains to say that the rumors that he's fled are untrue and that this is
11:17 am
a routine check up and many would ask what would the check up not then have been moved to if considering just how grave these charges are the private secretary say that says that the prime minister's health is important we have also spoken to the deputy commissioner of police who says that if the prime minister does not appear in court which at this point we now know is the case they would consider a warrant of arrest for the prime minister and then would seek the cooperation of south african authorities to try and get him back to my sorrow but given what to the private secretary has said the spokesman for the prime minister is that the prime minister is not looking to evade courts he believes in the pro says he's willing and able issues that there's a medical check up couldn't be avoided so we're waiting to hear if a new court date is scheduled but we've also spoken to tom to barneys lawyer who
11:18 am
seems to be uncertain of where time to bonnie actually is so we don't know this is an issue around communication or perhaps just the legal technicalities and difficulties that he may be facing in the meantime for me to listen to to a small southern african countries got a prime minister a leader of government who has got charges attached to him charges of murder and he's still the incumbent prime minister is at the case. that is the case but he is facing a lot of pressure to step down he did say a day ago that he would leave office at the end of july because of his advanced age he says it's time to retire and he didn't deal specifically with these charges that he's facing his own party the all of us who to convention is facing a lot of difficulties it's split there's a faction that is supporting the prime minister and many within the party say that
11:19 am
this is due to self interest people who have benefited from the prime minister's time in office and wouldn't want him to leave office because there is a lot to possibly protect and then there's also a faction that once him gone now the issue of succession is a very important one for people in that lawsuit too but also that a.b.c. coalition if they are a number of candidates who could take the place of tom to body as leader of the party and also a prime minister but a lot of internal politics that the a.b.c. coalition is having to grapple work then because of that the future and the next steps that this government will take remain uncertain all right for now for me to thank you for me to live in this area right now let's go to corona virus and the continuing apparently continuing spread of the virus john nichols is a clinical professor in pathology at the university of hong kong and he helped to
11:20 am
isolate the sols corona virus when it was rampant 17 years ago he joins us now from hong kong professor nichols thank you for talking to us what are the what are the questions that need to be answered for us to understand this new coronavirus. ok so from a biological point of view we've only had the virus outside mainland china about 3 weeks who is still coming to grips with actually in which parts the body grows and also what sort of tissue reaction it causes is it a disease like sars or is it a model top of our us. and what about the issue of transmissibility it sounds to me to be very alarming the fact that you can still be a carrier and indeed spread the disease when you're not actually having any symptoms that is correct and that's the big worry unlike sars where patients really had symptoms early on it seems up with this new virus is that you can actually have
11:21 am
the virus in the body and and have no symptoms how much your transmitting has been a bit of a challenge so that's why what we're now looking at in the laboratory said find out just how early the fast start replicating in the human research we tracked now the chinese were very quick with they to publish the the d.n.a. sequence of this virus has that been particularly useful. i think so it's been they've been very quick on the some of the basic biology and so that we can actually see just how different it can actually make up is from the sars virus now the credit boxes but what's been following has just been mainly clinical examples in mexico publications in not that much on the basic science of how much this virus was mother coronaviruses that's what really from a biological laboratories for we really want to look at and in the meantime while
11:22 am
still the quest for a vaccine or a cure continues what about the methods of containment isolation wearing face masks lockdowns the vast numbers of people i mean it is the best way to tackle it. well this is a very challenging road school question times in a few words but i think basically the the reality is sense the what happened with science and most of the countries which are having the outbreak right now is that it is the personal protection the maoists and also the social distancing and also the clean hands we seem to be working the current situation evolving is of on day by day and as we can see on the cruise ships is not ideal we going patients being put on the ship so they made it clear and i think did what to do them so i think this is a situation which i think is being very difficult to actually keep under under
