this is al jazeera. hello i'm still raman you're watching the al-jazeera news our live from our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes italy reports its 1st coronavirus death and shuts down public spaces in several towns the world health organization walls the window for containing the virus is closing also they are trying to cause chaos the trying of course the truth in america u.s. democratic presidential hopeful bernie sanders tells russia to stay out of america's elections after reports that moscow is meddling in the campaign. and a 7 day truce between the u.s. and the taliban goes into effect in afghanistan paving the way for a peace deal to be signed next week. and vote counting begins in iran's
5:01 am
parliamentary election with conservative expected to hold on to power after a moderate and reformist candidates were excluded. hello welcome to the news the number of new coronavirus cases in china dropped on friday the government says it recorded almost 400 new infections that's a fall of more than half from the previous day but numbers are on the rise in other countries italy has confirmed its 1st death from the virus public spaces have been shut down in 10 towns in lombardy province after 15 new cases were found there south korea has the most cases outside of china and they've had their largest spike in infections over half of those a members of a religious sect in the city of day. the virus has killed more than 2000 people
5:02 am
and infected more than 76000 others as the number of deaths outside china continues to rise the world health organization chief has issued this warning about the virus outbreak. although that window of opportunity is a no no we need to contain the outbreak we still have a chance to contain it but while doing that we have to prepare at the same time for any eventuality because this outbreak could go any direction it could even be messy. but what i'm saying is it's in our hands now if we do well within the not only window of opportunity we can reverse any or we can have very good any. serious cases so robert bright as our correspondent in south korea outside the main treatment center in daegu city and of course south korea rob must be very concerned about the
5:03 am
ongoing scenario and those infected the numbers certainly increasing day by day be it slowly. that's right these figures to have again spiked this saturday morning by friday evening we had 204 cases being reported across south korea they have now jumped by a 142 calling for the figures that have just been released that we now have 346 and bear in mind these figures are produced here in south korea twice a day so it's gone from friday being 204 to saturday morning being 346 by saturday evening we can expect another big jump as you mentioned they we are testing center at the main medical center one of the main hospitals here in daegu which is being now quickly dedicated just to the treatment of coronavirus people if they believe they have symptoms of cough or fever they come here they present
5:04 am
themselves that they are being tested we know that many of the cases here in daegu and chango and neighboring city which both have been declared as being a special chasm down here in the southeast of south korea many of the cases are centered on this particular church in daegu amongst the congregation but also we are seeing a big cluster in the neighboring city of chong go at a particular hospital there where 2 the 2 fatalities that we've had here in south korea were former patients there at the hospital and that's where we've had a big cluster of the 142 new cases 91 of the cases are there at the hospital amongst the patients and also some stuff what is the link between the hospital and the church here in daegu it seems it could be a funeral that took place there at the hospital that was attended by members of the congregation from the church here so that is the link that people here specialist
5:05 am
are examining as they continue to try to contain this outbreak role of an early on al jazeera i spoke to a doctor in the u.s. and the big question is how this virus is. being transmitted and that's your wearing a mask it's quite obvious that one of the possible possibilities is more research from the human body being transmitted from person to person or is it an airborne virus these are still big question marks so how are the medical professionals in south korea telling their own public to be careful and how to be careful. it does seem to be proximity if you are close to somebody who is contagious then you obviously are a risk of being infected yourself it does seem as though with the church in particular there were holding their congregations they were holding services people very close together interacting with each other and so on and that seems to be how this has spread so it is the usual standard practice of avoiding crowd
5:06 am
avoiding busy places we've seen throughout south korea now the authorities here are advising against the large gatherings in the capital seoul that weekends normally sees rallies by political parties trade unions associations all of those have now been banned by the government because they are concerned about the large congregations large gatherings of people so this standard precautions that you take with any infection those are basically big in place and that what we see here in daegu in particular is the mare is basically telling people to stay put stay in their homes for the moment rob thanks very much rob roy in south korea for 12 for more on the new numbers of deaths and cases in china let's go live to adrian brown who's in hong kong in the outbreak really causing some concern for the prison service certainly in china adrian. that's
5:07 am
right we now have more than 500 prisoners who have been infected with this virus in 3 provinces the largest number of prisoners to be infected is in will hand in a woman's jail 230 inmates in all and then in shandong province more than 200 prisoners also infected and more prisoners infected in another jail in judging these provinces are all in eastern china some distance away from who of course officials are trying to work out what the transmission route was for this virus now a number of prison officials in shandong have been dismissed but of course this all came on the day that the politburo met and basically agreed what everyone of course already knew that china has not yet turned the corner in its fight against this virus there was a big spike in numbers on friday more than 1100 and the reason for that big increase was of course those new infections in prison now at that meeting of the politburo state television also said that president xi jinping her dirge that
5:08 am
basically more emphasis needed be to be put on getting the autonomy revived while at the same time balancing the fight against the virus xi jinping wants to get the great sort of chinese economic engine moving once more but a lot of experts are warning that if he does that even of course secondary infections but there's no doubt that the leadership is very worried that when all this is over big corporations big manufacturers are going to re-evaluate whether they want to have so much reliance on chinese suppliers because of because of course this virus is to stop being the global supply chain right now bringing you know a number of car plants to a complete standstill or for the update adrian thanks very much adrian brown there our correspondent in hong kong. the mcintyre is the head of the bio security program at the university of new south wales kirby institute she joins me now on skype from sydney good to have you with us live on al-jazeera a real stark warning really from the w.a.
5:09 am
chief about the sort of the window of opportunity narrowing how seriously should we be taking that warning considering now that this virus really is very closely to be becoming called a pandemic. yeah i think it's very concerning that we're seeing a surge of cases in south korea and obviously also the breaks in the deaths in italy and iran suggests that there are much larger number of cases that have not been detected in both those countries so if there is you know a few countries that are. sustained transmission is occurring in the community it's going to make it much harder for us to control this while it was localized to china and there was a chance that all travel restrictions and measures that have been taken but once it's. you know widespread in other countries it's going to be. much harder how
5:10 am
do you solve the transmission problem and that problem for medics when you have a snarl in italy as we're hearing that none of the people that are affected in italy ever went to china. well clearly it's been transmitted in the community in italy and they haven't picked it out i think a mistake that a lot of people made early on was only testing return travelers who have symptoms it's now very clear from data that's come from the diamond princess and also from the japanese from their 1st evacuees from were on hand is that if you test everybody whether or not they've got symptoms coming from a high risk location you will find people who are a cinch medically inspected and that's probably what's been missed. at the weekend there will be a meeting of g 20 senior politicians in saudi arabia to talk also about the coronavirus break and how to deal with it you know we're seeing it in china and
5:11 am
asia you know it's heading towards you might say western countries who may be more best equipped to to deal with this sort of medical emergency what sort of progress would you like to see come out of that meeting and what sort of advice is there for the public at large from from your perspective. you mean in saudi arabia in the middle east so from of from the g. 20 meeting when these senior politicians get together they were having words of advice for their own national people for that for the global community at large. yes i think there's going to be have to be decisions made there. about public health consequences as well as economic consequences obviously the travel bans have economic consequences and. from a public health perspective it's really important that all countries play a role in that to fully finding new cases in current inning people who are at risk
5:12 am
in isolating new cases as they occur trying to start the sustained transmission in their countries because if one or 2 control and she's lose control of it. it's not going to be possible to start a pandemic what sort of advice do you have for anyone who has traveled from an area of the world where the virus has been prevalent or somebody who's come into contact with somebody who's been traveling recently what are the symptoms what should they be looking out for. so the symptoms could be very mild it's been shown there a lot of people have a really mild illness for about 5 to 10 days before they even think they need to see a doctor so no matter how mild the symptoms if you have been traveling in asia particularly and that includes. other countries in asia so there's been a couple of travel related cases reported from people traveling to thailand for example that you showed seek medical attention over by the doctor or the
5:13 am
hospital that you've traveled in asia and get tested as soon as possible and obviously to avoid. places really bachata thanks so much for joining us from sydney and thanks very much for joining us here on al-jazeera. now it's been nearly 4 weeks since hoover province the epicenter of the current eyes are break went into lockdown stricter measures have been imposed with the chinese government determined to control the quiet since that's brought the country to a standstill clearly you spoke to residents living in woohoo. one month after bronze sealed off its borders its roads are empty and construction sites are abandoned the city's millions of residents have been ordered to stay indoors among them mark leo and his son crap your hands on your feet your hands you know feet which schools across china closed until further notice eason is taking classes
5:14 am
online through a video call mark told us his family was doing its best to adapt to life under lockdown and how they've been coping with the restrictions and in order to look that is necessary friends of people i know and some of my colleagues have been affected and some tied to a few days after they found out the cause of virus so i'm really worried for my family can do is to stay at home residents had been permitted to leave their residential compounds once every 7 days but this week loudspeakers placed on street corners notified households of change. from now on nobody can go out the previous the lawns were going out every 7 days has been cancelled lining up to collect food at local pick up points is now for many the only outing for the day special teams have been deployed to deliver supplies there
5:15 am
are one of the few still to me to drive around the city. is one of them here every day i am in contact with those who live in my community i need to know how many people are living one household and check the temperature twice a day see she says food distribution in behind has improved since the beginning of the lockdown and most people seem to support the new measures. by sealing off the community we can isolate the unhealthy people from healthy people our strategy now is early detection and early isolation a makeshift hospital nick. named the ruhani living room has become home for thousands infected by the virus. and those who don't come voluntarily approached by force mark leo knows the coronavirus crisis will eventually pass but worries about the stigma who had residents made. to the bin the virus originated in hard but people didn't create it i hope they don't keep

a bias against us they shouldn't blame everything on people so far 7 year old essent isn't too worried his wish for now is being allowed again to play outside. al-jazeera beijing plenty more ahead here on the al-jazeera news hour including stranded in syria we meet the families displaced by war and in desperate need of aid. also talks about contract libya's warring parties are set to try and work out their political differences. and leave a legacy it's back after one of his bosses blames the players for getting their coach sacked peter we'll have more in sport. is that the u.s. now where in the u.s. the democratic republic hopefuls bernie sanders as ward russia's leader to stay out

of the 2020 presidential election but he was responding to reports that intelligence officials warned him that the kremlin was meddling to boost his campaign earlier moscow denied any interference after u.s. media said congress had been briefed about efforts to boost president tranced chances he dismissed the reports as misinformation. harmony's these the do nothing democrats. they said today that the team wants to be sure that trump gets elected here we go. here we go again did you see it snow are people born i was told that was happening i i was told a week ago they said you know they're trying to start a rumor it's just information that's the only thing they're good at that not good at anything else they get nothing done do nothing democrats edition that. once you make sure i get elected roll brunell's has some must think it's well the
5:18 am
president of course is you know following in his long standing tradition or position if you will of the denying that there was any russian interference in the 2016 election he's always called it a hoax but the senator sanders confirmed that intelligence officials u.s. intelligence officials had spoken to him about a month ago telling him of a russian intelligence agency's efforts to assist his candidacy and his race for the democratic nomination here is the senator speaking to reporters earlier today we were told it was for maybe other countries are going to get involved in this campaign. and look here's the message to russia stay out of american elections and what they are doing by the way the ugly thing that they are doing. and i've seen some of the you know tweets and stuff is they try to divide us up that's what they did in 2016 and that is the ugliest thing they're doing is they are trying to
5:19 am
cause chaos the trying to cause hatred in america it's an ugly business and all of us have got to say sorry you're not going to do this in this election and again is present in the united states. you will not interfere in our legitimacy and what sander seems to be referring to there is something that he mentioned in the recent democratic debate here in las vegas earlier this week when he was attacked by some of his opponents for the tone of his supposed supporters online stander suggested that those harsh attacks online against his opponents by some people who ostensibly were sanders supporters could in fact be russian trolls trying to hype up the raise the temperature of the debate and and so. further ill will and bad feelings there is a democratic strategist who joins me now from washington d.c. good to have you with us live on the program how worried should politicians across
5:20 am
the board be about these warnings coming from their own intelligence services. your 1st thank you very much for having me you know listen i think it is very troubling and i think our elected officials should be concerned we know for a fact that it's on deniable that in 2016 the russians did interfere in our election and it's unfortunate right now that we have a president who does not want to acknowledge the threat in 2020 does not want to disavow what the russians are trying to do and i think we saw 2 very different responses from president trump and from senator sanders president trump on one hand dismissed the director of national intelligence and berated him because his deputies follow the law and inform congress of this axis of threat to our democracy and on the other hand you saw senator sanders say unequivocally i don't want russia's help he disavowed what russia is trying to do and he called vladimir putin
5:21 am
autocratic thug and so i think all alike officials regardless of party should be concerned about this because this is a threat to our democracy and who we are as americans indeed i mean that the briefing itself was attended by adam schiff a senior democrats. and indeed president didn't really want this briefing to go ahead how rattled do you think he is not just by the briefing but by the fact that it was so well attended. yeah i can't speak to how rattled the president may or may not be what i can say is that we do have elected officials in congress that are in a position to act that we again in 2016 when this information was presented we saw folks like mitch mcconnell say that regardless of what our intelligence community was saying regardless of the fact that they were not going to do anything and continually seeing that posture. is called the moscow mitch because he has not
5:22 am
actually done anything to do anything about this threat and so i think that's very very troublesome again doesn't matter if you're a democrat or republican independent as americans we fundamentally believe that we have a responsibility to participate in our democracy and if the russians are trying to interfere in that democracy it doesn't matter what party you come from you should stand up and say that we will not allow this to happen and we really need to see leadership from president trump we need to see leadership from our members of congress i have to say that i am not terribly confident based upon how president has reacted but i think the power is with the american people and we have to exercise our power and not allow russians to sow chaos and dissent from ation and impact our elections like we did in 216 if that is the case we have a scenario here where you have 2 sides of the political divide who just do not agree if they were on the same page they take all bold tackle this infiltration of
5:23 am
misinformation is happening on the internets in various forms tweets various messages all that is they're not doing that so it gives the opportunity to say that the why do into that to be the facilitator of this misinformation it's not being tackled really at the soul it's just being dogged about in the political sphere and that's the difference. i mean listen i have to say again this is this should not be a political thing this is a fundamental thing about our democracy and the democracy you know this argument is for this argument to be happening in the political domain in the united states that talking very much about what is being seen and read on the internet are they not and therefore it's the internet that has to be tackled but it has to be tackled from the political level and that these 2 sides in the u.s. are just not seeing eye to eye on where the source of the problem is. for sure
5:24 am
it's rooted in politics but we also the recognize you know most recently facebook said that they weren't going to actually pull down information that they knew was factually incorrect by this because of free speech and so there's a responsibility not only that from our elected officials but from those that control those platforms so if facebook for instance knows that there's misinformation knows that it can is being dishonest they have a responsibility as well and so you know politicians will do with what they will do but this is not a partisan issue and i think that's what is really important this is a foreign government that is trying to sow chaos and further divisions in our country and the sad reality is that the president is not doing anything to stand up to it the intelligence community is doing their job by raising the flag and there's a responsibility of our elected officials to do something about it without question or just see what they do do or not think in the coming weeks and months for the
5:25 am
moment very clever thanks so much for joining us from washington d.c. . thank you for having me. with that supposed to usher in peace in afghanistan and come into effect the taliban and the u.s. will begin what they're calling a reduction of violence if the 7 day deal is a success both sides will sign to court at the end of the month paving the way for talks between the taliban and other afghan groups the u.s. says it wants to pull its troops out of the country while john hendren is in washington d.c. he says the terms of the reduction in the violence of a. this is after all not technically a cease fire it's a pause in hostilities but none of the parties involved in these discussions the united states the government of. afghanistan or the taliban has publicly defined exactly what a violation of this cause in hostilities is is it one attack is it 10 is it 100 or so technically anything that happens could give any of those parties an
5:26 am
opportunity to withdraw from this agreement but i think the general sense is that with about a 1000 afghan individuals being killed every month that a dramatic reduction in that violence is something that all those parties would be willing to live with and as long as none of those parties are obviously involved in a major attack that might allow this to stand but the problem is we really really don't know what i don't think any of the parties really knows it's the kind of thing that they are likely to play by ear as this goes along. well still ahead here on al-jazeera a show of force sent thousands of arms security personnel are deployed find out why plus. not one more women rally against a violent city that mexico takes 7 year old girl is brutally murdered.

told they cannot stand as elections it means conservatives could benefit from a lower turnout and lack of opposition and this will have also repercussions for you when a foreign policy and i think this will bring more support from the parliament side for ukraine and regional policies but more importantly it will decrease the chances for the life the hood of any direct negotiations between iran and the united states there are those who have stayed away upset at a lack of change and an economy reeling under u.s. sanctions solomon right. i voted every year but i saw no effect to convince me to vote this time i finish my studies i have a bachelor's and finished ministry service but there's no job for me for what i see no reason to want. now to ban it i know i'm not voting because previous lawmakers did nothing they had no effect in the country so i did vote told it's not me alone many doubts that to vote. results are expected later in the week at
