and the taliban comes into effect in afghanistan paving the way for a peace deal to be signed next week. vote counting underway in iran's parliament reelection with conservatives expected to hold on to power after moderates and reformist candidates were excluded. hello the number of new coronavirus cases in china dropped on friday the government says a recorded almost 400 new infections it's a fall of more than half from the previous day but numbers are on the rise in other countries italy has confirmed its 1st death from the virus public spaces have been shut down in 10 towns in lombardy province after 15 new cases were found there and south korea has the most cases outside of china and they've had their largest spike in infections over half of those are members of

a religious sect in the city of daegu well as the number of deaths outside china continues to rise the world health organization chief has issued this warning about the corona virus outbreak. although that window of opportunity is not only to contain the outbreak we still have a chance to contain it but while doing that we have to prepare at the same time for any eventuality because this outbreak could go any direction it could even be messy. but what i'm saying is it's in our hands now if we do well within the not only window of opportunity we can reverse any or we can have very good any. serious crisis or rob mcbride is in the city of daigo in south korea and he has more on the situation there. these figures to have again spiked this saturday morning by friday evening we had 204 cases being reported across
6:03 am
south korea they have now jumped by 142 calling for the figures that have just been released that we now have 346 and bear in mind these figures are produced here in south korea twice a day so it's gone from friday being 204 to saturday morning being 346 by saturday evening we can expect another big jump as you mentioned they we are testing center at the main medical center one of the main hospitals here in daegu which is being now quickly dedicated just to the treatment of coronavirus people if they believe they have symptoms of cough or fever they come here they present themselves that they are being tested we know that many of the cases here in daegu and chango in neighboring city which both have been declared as being a special chasm down here in the southeast of south korea many of the cases are centered on this particular church in daegu amongst the congregation but also we
6:04 am
are seeing a big cluster in the neighboring city of chung's go at a particular hospital there where 2 of the 2 fatalities that we've had here in south korea were former patients there at the hospital and that's where we've had a big cluster of the 142 new cases 91 of the cases are there at the hospital amongst the patients and also some stuff what is the link between the hospital and the church here in daegu it seems it could be a funeral that took place there at the hospital that was attended by members of the congregation from the church here so that is the link that people here specialists are examining as they continue to try to contain this outbreak let's get an update from adrian brown he's joining us from hong kong so we're seeing the number of new cases drop in china adrian but what we're hearing now is that the outbreak has spread to at least one prison. you know that's right the figures are
6:05 am
very erratic and on friday we saw a large spike more than 1100 new infections but on saturday as you rightly point out we've seen a fall it's hard to know what to read into those figures whether we are seeing something positive or negative but certainly it's negative as far as china's prisons are concerned it seems are being more than $500.00 infections into prisons outside of a province in woohoo more than $230.00 inmates have been infected at hands women's prison so in total just over $500.00 new infections and of course you know the authorities are trying to work out how that virus spread to other jails outside of a province of trying to work out what the root of transmission was now a number of prison officials in shandong have been dismissed and government investigators have arrived to begin their examination of how this happened now the leadership meanwhile has been sounding a note of caution after several days of upbeat messages there was

a meeting of the politburo on friday evening 25 members of the politburo gathered around a table chaired by president xi jinping who said that control of the epidemic had to be balanced with the need to revive china's economy his priority is to get the economy moving again to get the great engine of chinese growth turning but he's also where the you know many big corporations outside of china or reevaluating you know whether they're going to rely on chinese suppliers in the future because of course this crisis has left the mic screamy vulnerable it is disrupted the global supply chain led to a number of car plants for instance having to shut down because they can't get the spare parts they need from china and also president xi jinping said it's too soon to say that china has turned the corner in its fight against the virus yes on that particular note adrian with the chinese as you're saying striking a more cautious turned on the sort of beat one that we've seen over the past few
6:07 am
days what are we to read into that and how confident are our forty's that they can actually get ahead of this virus. well it's interesting to note that this meeting of the politburo took place on the day that we saw that big spike in new infections so it would have been hard for them to say you know we're winning this fight when you know 500 prisoners had become infected certainly the message in state media during the past week has been very much that you know china can control this seeing china will contain this thing but i think at the moment you know ringing in their ears of the words of the world health organization chief who says we have this narrow window of opportunity and that window is getting smaller every day all right adrian thank you for that update from hong kong. well in the u.s. democratic presidential hopeful bernie sanders has warned russia leader to stay out

of the 2020 presidential election he was responding to reports that intelligence officials warned him the kremlin was meddling to boost his campaign earlier moscow denied any interference after u.s. media said congress had been briefed about efforts to boost president donald trump chances he's dismissed the reports as a misinformation campaign. i see these phoneys these that do nothing 3. they said today that he wants to be sure that trump gets elected here we go. here we go again did you see it. are people born i was told that was happening i i was told a week ago they said you know they're trying to start a rumor it's just information that's the only thing they're good at that not good at anything else they get nothing done do not think democrats it does just that. once you make sure i get elected. reports in las vegas. well the

president of course is you know following in his long standing tradition or position if you will of the denying that there was any russian interference in the 26 team election he's always called it a hoax but senator sanders confirmed that intelligence officials u.s. intelligence officials had spoken to him about a month ago telling him of a russian intelligence agency's efforts to assist his candidacy and his race for the democratic nomination here is the response senator speaking to reporters earlier today we were told that rush or maybe other countries are going to get involved in this campaign. and look here's the message to russia stay out of american elections and what they are doing by the way the ugly thing that they are doing and i've seen some of their you know tweets and stuff is they try to divide
6:10 am
us up that's what they did in 2016 and that is the ugliest thing they're doing is they are trying to cause chaos the trying to cause hatred in america it's an ugly business and all of us have got to say sorry you're not going to do this in this election and again is present in the united states just buton you will not interfere in our leadership and what sander seems to be referring to there is something that he mentioned in the recent democratic debate here in las vegas earlier this week when he was attacked by some of his opponents for the tone of his supposed supporters online stander suggested that those harsh attacks online against his opponents by some people who ostensibly were sandor supporters could in fact be russian trolls trying to hype up the raise the temperature of the debate and and so. further ill will and bad feelings.

plummer's a democratic strategist he says it's not entirely down to politicians to stop the meddling social media companies have to take responsibility to it's rooted in politics but we also the recognize you know most recently facebook said that they weren't going to actually pull down information that they knew was factually incorrect by ken it's because of free speech and so there's a responsibility not only that from our elected officials but from those that control those platforms so if facebook for instance knows that there's misinformation knows that a cain is being dishonest they have a responsibility as well and so you know politicians will do with what they will do but this is not a partisan issue and i think that's what is really important this is a foreign government that is trying to sow chaos and so further divisions in our country and the sad reality is that the president is not doing anything to stand up to it the intelligence community is doing their job by raising the flag and there's

a responsibility of our elected officials to do something about it without question . an agreement that supposed to us or in peace in afghanistan has come into effect the taliban and the u.s. have begun what they're calling a weeklong reduction in violence with a 1000 afghans dying every month the pause offers hope but it also raises some awkward questions as john hendren reports from washington. in kabul where bullets bombs and sirens often punctuate the soundtrack of daily life there is now an unaccustomed silence at midnight on saturday the taliban the united states in the afghan government of on trucks going to begin a pause in hostilities if it lasts 7 days the parties plan to sign a peace deal in doha on february 29th that aims to end america's longest war we have to give peace a chance that the the best if not only way forward in afghanistan is through a political agreement and that means taking some risks that means enabling our

diplomats it's not a ceasefire it's a test of trust and you know who i am that you would be for security and defense forces will remain in a defensive position during the week of reduction of violence is us afghan forces will continue operations against ice and al-qaeda which are not part of the agreement none of the parties involved in the talks has publicly defined what constitutes a violation in the pause in hostilities is it one attack or is it 10 so it's possible that if anything happens each side has an opportunity to call it off i think that they the taliban leadership is genuinely committed to implementing this truce they very careful not to call it the call of the cease fire which will be a good idea except by this will happen even eventual cease fire holds that would open the door to 3000000 afghan refugees in pakistan to return to their homeland but some refugees ask to where the if we leave here we have no way to go back to i

hello again welcome back to international weather forecast well here across the southern united states the big story over the last week has been the flooding we have been talking about mostly along much of the rivers down here a lot of the rivers are at flood stage the good news is here on saturday we do have a break in the rain but it takes more than just one day to let all of that water begin to recede out here towards the west though we're going to be watching some rain pushing through los angeles and southern california into parts of new mexico as well arizona's going to be seeing some rain that's going to continue to make its way a little bit more towards the east becoming snow into those higher elevations but sunday is also going to be did we see a day of more rain across much of the central plains as well not a lot of rain but this is going to instigate the flooding situation across much of the area over the next few days the eastern part of the caribbean looks quite nice but it is over here towards mexico southern mexico that we are going to be scenes of very heavy rain and that is going to be making its way more towards the south into quad amala so for guatemala city it is going to be possibly a rainy day few with attempted there of $26.00 degrees and then here in brazil we

right now the u.n. special representative gus on salami says there is some progress and he's pretty positive about next wednesday there being wider talks political talks but when i pressed him on general half intention he answered with a general answer about there being people in libya who had a plan b. a military plan b. i am sure that a lot of people in libya still believe that either they can win the battle through war or that they cannot stop the other side from waging a war and therefore they are still trying to have new are munition and other quality of weaponry and superior quality of weaponry and probably more medicine aires and supplant the forces but this as long as it is planned

be the challenges on us to push forward the plan a well those political top's are very much in the dari for wednesday next week but it's worth telling you that the military talks are not over yet they're still trying to work on a ceasefire those talks will go on into the weekend in south sudan president salva kiir has dissolved his cabinet in preparation for a new unity government the opposition leader we have one charge has been appointed as 1st vice president and the 2 former rivals will lead the new government from saturday in an attempt to end years of conflict which has left more than 400000 people dead ever morgan is in juba where she says the south sudanese are hopeful they'll finally see change on the ground. ahead of forming what has been termed as the revitalized transitional government of national unity on saturday south sudan's president on friday issued several decrees relieving the ministers of the government from their positions as well as relieving the 1st vice president and

vice president one eager from their posts now the president also issued more decrees the most prominent being appointing the head of the opposition leader rick machar as for his vice president according to a peace deal that was signed in 2002 between the whirring sides to it and 5 years of conflict he also issued decrees that saw the return of. as vice president and one eager also as vice president now this all comes as part of a deal that was signed between the various opposition parties and the government in 2018 and a conflict that started in 2013 which has led to at least 4 100000 people being killed and more than 2000000 displaced within the country and some in neighboring countries but just because the 2 sides and or all the sides have said that they are trying to meet a deadline that doesn't mean all the issues are resolved the most outstanding issue between the sides had been the number of states that has been resolved by the president last saturday when he announced that the country will be returning to the

former number of 10 states along with 3 administrative areas but then the issues of security arrangements still remain to be outstanding between the various sides that will in just a matter of hours be partners in the government they have said that they are going to agree to try to resolve these issues after the formation of the government to make sure that they do not miss another deadline let's not forget that february 22nd is already deferred deadline the 1st initial deadline had been in maine 2019 and then that was postponed to november 29th team but due to several outstanding issues that had not been resolved between the warring sides they had to push it to february 28th seems so people on the streets of south sudan are saying that they're looking forward to a government formation so that they can. the impacts of the peace deal that has been signed in 2018 but is yet to be reflected on the ground they're saying that the economy has suffered a lot since the conflict started and they want to make sure that peace comes to the country so that they can try to go back to their normal lives. when the war started
