kuwaiti citizens from iran to the spread of infections there meanwhile in the u.s. president trump has appointed vice president mike pence to lead the response against the corona virus outbreak in an hour long press conference downplayed any criticism of his handling of the issue but we're very very ready for this for anything whether it's going to be a breakout of larger proportions or whether we're you know we're at that very low level and we want to keep it their way so we're at the low level as they get better we take them off the list so that we're going to be pretty soon are only 5 people and we could be at just one or 2 people over the next short period of time so we've had very good luck. and in europe france has recalled its 2nd death while it's only has confirmed its 12th a man who returned to brazil after visiting italy has become latin america's 1st case well globally more than $81000.00 cases of corona virus have been recorded in

44 countries and territories well shortly we'll cross to kimberly how kate who's outside the white house with the latest on the trumpet ministrations efforts to contain the spread of the virus there but 1st let's head to south korea's capital seoul where our correspondent rob mcbride is standing by at rob's confirmation ben that the u.s. and south korea will be cooling off those joint military drills because of the virus what more do we know. that's right there's been growing speculation that this would be announced in this day morning here in seoul we've had confirmation of it it does seem it would have seemed strange in a way if the exercises did go ahead given that south korean government has been calling on people to avoid crowds and to have exercises bringing together potentially thousands of troops in close proximity would not seem to be a sensible move so yes it they have been postponed we don't know until they have
5:04 am
been postponed to presumably sometime later this year but we've had yesterday the 1st confirmation of a us serving personnel coming down with the coronavirus we have various quarantine measures in place at a number of bases in south korea it's interesting these exercises have always been controversial it always angers north korea but throughout the decades that they've been taking place despite hostility with with north korea they have gone ahead despite the process of reconciliation we've had over the past couple of years they've still got ahead but it's taken this coronavirus now finally to to bring them to a halt and meanwhile the south koreans coming to terms with a growing number of countries and territories basically closing the door on south korea's travel to and from south korea with their 30 countries now imposing a number of restrictions on travel to south korea rob in terms of the bigger
5:05 am
picture there where you are south korea is now reporting a total of about $1500.00 infections bring us up to date with the bigger picture. that's right nearly 1600 cases now recorded this today thursday's spike of 330 4 'd it is the biggest single increment that we have had in the numbers their numbers are released twice daily in the morning and the afternoon here so we can expect another spike another increase this afternoon and when we do we may see for the 1st time south korea recording more new cases then china will know in a few hours if that's the case but that will be a dubious distinction to be recording more cases here on the positive side of things it does show that south korea is scaling up its testing in the past 24 hours or so $7500.00 tests have been done these are time consuming they're complicated so
5:06 am
that is the positive thing that the whole system does seem to be working towards further testing so you can expect to get further new cases. in the south korean capital seoul rob thank you for the update let's go live now to the white house and talk to kimberly how could kimberly we heard from president trump earlier he made it clear in that press conference that america is ready for any outbreak of the virus what more did he have to say. yes the u.s. president may be eating his words when it comes to some of the numbers he really tried to stress the in downplay the number of cases of corona virus in the united states originally talking about the original 15 as he called it but we know that there are at least 60 confirmed cases in the united states including one case in northern california where public health officials are not exactly sure how that transmission occurred given this person had not immediately returned from china had not had any contact perhaps you know with the cruise ship passengers or any other
5:07 am
so this is something that is very concerning there's also the concern that by the fact that there is not adequate testing in the united states very few people a hundreds have been tested versus thousands in other countries so there has been an effort by the trumpet ministration to to cut it down play but many are questioning the facts given the fact that there is not sort of this widespread public health response that is currently in place having said that as the president tried to sort of allay the fears of the american public the public health officials here at the white house who appeared with him didn't quite do that in fact they said that it's time for businesses to put their pen debit plans in place that schools should be doing the same and they also prepare the american public for a rise in the number of cases we've seen here in the u.s. i'm curious so we'll sort of reaction then have we seen from the public i'm from the media to the coronavirus i mean how worried are americans about all this.
5:08 am
there's a lot of skepticism derren and this really is at all levels not only the congressional level that is questioning the amount of funding to deal with this outbreak requested by the white house currently a 2500000000 some in u.s. congress have said that is woefully inadequate that it should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 8500000000 but what we've also seen in the face of contradictory messages coming out of this white house is that ordinary americans who are growing increasingly nervous are looking to their local officials at the city and even state level so as a result we have had governors coming out today in the united states to reassure the public even the mayor of the largest city the most populated city in the united states new york city telling the public and not only the public but also the 1st responders like police officers for example that they will be given gas masks who are our protective masks would be more adequate to describe it in order to try and
5:09 am
sort of counteract the spread of the virus so it appears that in the absence of a sort of a federal response despite the fact that we know the vice president has been appointed to coordinate that americans are not feeling entirely confident right to can really help at that at the white house committee thank you well dressed like measures have been announced in iraq to stop the spread of the virus there is there is some manifold it is in baghdad she says it's unclear how the containment measures will be enforced. the ministry of health issued a new decree earlier this evening announcing far reaching measures in what appears to be an effort to her terrible spread of the virus here in iraq so far there have been 5. 100 cases of the coronavirus including in the southern cities and that of and in the northern city of kirkuk perhaps in the most surprising want measures to help ministry has said it would be for building any public gatherings closing down

5:11 am
of the disease something that has become a major public health crisis here in the country he also addressed public concerns about whether or not the information coming from officials could actually be trusted this after a member of parliament representing the city of home where the 1st case was detected said the number of cases and deaths from this virus are far higher than official figures reported by the government here's what the president had to say about that and i don't mean. i emphasize that we don't manipulate the figures we not the increase no decrease them nor do we exaggerate or downplay them i've told the health ministry to announce any figures they have this is a plot we see today in foreign propaganda recently a high ranking u.s. official made a comment about coronavirus in iran that i themselves are dealing with the flu 16000 died because of that the cea but they don't talk about it and now they are turning their attention to corona virus in iran earlier this week president hassan rouhani also said that the situation in the country could begin to normalize as

mike pence to manage the country's response. india's prime minister narendra modi has called for calm on the 4 days of violence in new delhi at least 25 people have lost their lives and more than 2 country been injured. now a year has passed since u.s. president donald trump met with the north korean leader kim jong un in vietnam the 2nd summit between the 2 men there was great hope at the time that the 2 enemies would be able to reach a deal on the denuclearization of the korean peninsula but those talks collapsed and kim left hanoi empty handed the former white house chief of staff john kerry has recently described the summit and all other meetings as futile saying that america got played well mason ritchie is an associate professor at hancock university of foreign studies he joins us now via skype from seoul mason president trump has been preoccupied with issues like his impeachment and and now the coronavirus so has north korea been put firmly on the back burner now by the u.s.
5:32 am
administration do you think. yes that seems to be the case when you talk to people in washington d.c. whether in the state department or the white house and even the defense department and extends north korea in terms of diplomacy right now is clearly on the backburner is likely to be the case for most of the rest of the $21.00. seemed to be so much promise off of the singapore summit and also made that historic step over the border into north korea but i mean even pyongyang now seems to have lost its appetite the talks yes that's absolutely correct they were clearly broadcasting not for most of 19 following the failure the last opportunity and some inspectors in no way. throughout the 2nd half and $21000.00 in particular they were very clear about the fact that they were recently interested in returning to negotiations and
5:33 am
now works also with it being an election year and the united states plus up until recently washington's preoccupation with impeachment that has also dissuaded going on from being interested in for the negotiations and now of course we have coronavirus which is possibly an issue in north korea although there are 9 cases until now but clearly appealing i explain the concern about the possibility of a break there so right now they're preoccupied with that missile how much do you think the legacy about how noise summit that failed how is summit was perhaps a missed opportunity and what could both leaders have done differently. well it clearly was a missed opportunity it was a failure it was a failure on both sides kim came in with some unrealistic expectations and trump and his team probably walked away a few quickly and most importantly neither side put in the leg work. working level negotiation efforts prior to that in order to build
5:34 am
a solid basis for actually accomplishing something and i know it now we know that north korea's arsenal nuclear arsenal continues to grow every day and from the u.s. perspective this is really been a lost opportunity to at the very least get some arms control out in the negotiations so clearly in the u.s. side this is been a failure but also the north korean side you know the sanctions are hurting them and we don't know exactly to what extent but they are certainly answer from their perspective also this diplomatic engagement over the last several years hasn't worn any theories meissen rich thank you very much for talking to us great thanks for having me i think it now that the cities which power the world's biggest economy but they're also at serious risk of disappearing beneath the waves a report from consulting from various says gong show on cities which generate 20 percent of china's g.d.p. of the world's most vulnerable to see the rise across china almost 8000000 people
5:35 am
are at risk from the rising seas among the most prominent cities outside of asia facing the highest risk on by alexandra new york west bring in will nicholas he's head of environment and climate change very. global risk on the company he joins us now from new york will this report talks about the sea level rise index how important is it and what system what's it telling us that we don't already know. great question all still of a rise in covers around 500 cities across the world and it's a kind of combination of sea level projections from thousands of sites across the world and terrain map as well i guess what it shows i mean obviously we've identified some of the big key economic areas but what i think the kind of messages here is that sea level rise is increasing i think sea level rise is often seen as a more distant problem but the fact that levels are increasing and are picking up
5:36 am
you really brings into play some of the investments in infrastructure things like power plants airports that are going to be around in maybe 405060 years time so we're very keen for companies to start factoring sea level rise into those investments as soon as they can ok so let's talk about one of those big economic areas because your report found that the highest risk cities are in china that's an area that generates 20 percent of the country's g.d.p. and a whopping 4 percent of global wealth what impact is that likes to have and also the response i was seeing from china. well i should certainly say that this is to rosa next kind of considers. absolute exposure so we haven't taken into account things like mitigating measures and we can see that china is starting to bring those things in mainly government led or municipality led you know we do see sea walls we see projects to protect other hire a cities like shanghai for example what we're not seeing is a lot of corporate action we're not seeing companies talk about it we're not seeing
5:37 am
companies really kind of put a lot of. effort into mapping out their risks as well so whilst we're seeing places like china which do have the ability to finance these kind of measures we would also be slightly concerned for countries with high risk cities which are perhaps poorer and less able to mobilize the finance needed to defend themselves against sea level rise will and that's global emissions and global temperature is going to need to rise of course the devils will also be on the rise as well so what is your message then to governments and companies around the world because as you say seen a rise a long term problem and it's not going to go away no exactly it's not going anywhere in the. indexes is predicated on a sort of worst case scenario or a sort of business as usual scenario where the world does absolutely nothing to cut emissions to 2100 so this is by no means a guaranteed outcome if we do work together to start cutting emissions if we have
5:38 am
the private sector and governments working together to address it then we can stave off some of these races but i would emphasize that we do need to start thinking about them because even though if we start to address emissions the effects of sea level rise might be not as significant they're still going to be there well nichols thanks very much indeed for sharing your time with us thank you. thank you a full military funerals been held in a cairo for egypt's former leader hosni mubarak who died on tuesday age 91 he was in 3 decades until being forced out of office 9 years ago as jonah hill now reports the. career rather than his controversial time in office. hosni mubarak's coffin draped in the egyptian flag and a horse drawn to the sound of cannon fire a funeral with full military honors for the man who led egypt for 30 years and whose legacy divides many nearly a decade after the arab spring. he was a military man and he achieved
5:39 am
a lot for egypt we will not look at his shortcomings only no one is perfect it is mubarak's wartime record that the government would like for these 3 decades in power brought relative stability but also economic stagnation and repression it's quite a lot of pomp and circumstance when you when you really stop and think about it for a man who only 9 years ago was ousted by a popular revolt and then a year later sentenced to life in prison we forget for ordering the killing of hundreds of protesters he was openly mocked and ridiculed. in egyptian society and egyptian media hated by millions of egyptians but all we've seen over these last few years is a counter revolution in egypt they've reframed the narrative around the january 25th revolution and now they're honoring the man who was who was ousted it's really quite the change of circumstance. mubarak's rule invites uncomfortable comparisons
5:40 am
