6:02 pm
the u.s. 2 people have died in florida the 1st fate teletubbies outside of the west coast more than 330 people have contracted the virus there but the hotel used as a quarantine center in china's province has also collapsed trapping around 70 people let's get the very latest from our correspondent katrina huge joins me now live on skype from beijing what seems to have happened at this particular location a vital location for the authorities trying to fight coronavirus. that's what it was a trying to get some more information but so far we know it's a hotel in china's southern for jen province in the city of 20 now this building this whole building it seems to have collapsed now the whole building is not just a hotel the upper levels of this building our hotel it's said to have $5.00 to $6.00 stories and the bottom level are stores and we're still trying to get some
6:03 pm
more information but it seems in social media there are some reports that a possible renovation of some some of these stores one of the store in the bottom level has caused this collapse but that's still speculation at this point we do know that the hotel was housing about 70 to 80 people at least 70 people are trapped and emergency workers are on the scene and they've so far rescued over 20 people so far so we know that this crash happened at about this collapse happened at about 7 30 pm here in beijing that happened just over 3 hours ago from social media reports people who witnessed this they said it sounded like an explosion if you see some of these pictures it looks like there was an explosion the whole building really looks like it has been flipped over basically and we don't know any information so far as to whether there have been any fatalities that looking at this really dramatic footage it's hard to imagine that people would not have been seriously injured in this collapse but we know that there were about. the hotel
6:04 pm
itself has been used as you mentioned as a quarantine center as an isolation ward essentially for people who have known to have had the coronavirus people from who were a province in the neighboring city of window and so we're so also waiting to hear information as to as to their health and safety at this point katrina thanks joining us from beijing well. is live for us in the iranian capital tehran where a newly elected m.p.'s also died from the corona virus and so you know how are the authorities really reacting and dealing with this ever changing way and reality that the virus is infecting the population at large. well so they're definitely trying to do whatever they can to convince people to listen to the advice that they are given that's really been the biggest challenge from senior leadership here in iran in terms of combating this coronavirus ever since the
6:05 pm
outbreak was publicly announced ever since it began in home last month now if you speak to iranians even those that do believe the government then the recent poll by a member of the municipal authority here in tehran estimates that only 50 percent of the people are truly concerned about this is a public health crisis even if you speak to iranians who might wish to follow the government's advice to the letter they say they simply can't afford it even if they might like to stay indoors and not open their shops not carry on with their businesses many shops are closed many are not one business operator i spoke with said that he worries that shutting down his business will mean not only laying off workers but because of the economic impact over a long period of time of the coronavirus and having to shut things down it might mean that he'll never be able to open his business again taxis are available on the streets but when you get in most drivers are wearing gloves and masks and they provide you with hand sanitizer and will spread your hands before you start the
6:06 pm
journey as much of a service to their passengers as a way to protect themselves really iranians will tell you that they simply can't afford for life not to go on as normal and that is something that the government has been aware of ever since this outbreak began of course it is difficult to. say sorry when people want life to be as normal as possible when 2 large urban centers like. seeing those infections rise and yet we have news of another legislator also dying to. that's exactly right the government has been really at the epicenter of the epicenter and that has a lot to do with the fact that elections as people moved around the country electioneering and campaigning came into contact with people in home really the political heartland the religious and political heartland of this country now the health minister the health ministry has said over and over again in their various public briefings that happen every day that they are dissatisfied with people not
6:07 pm
paying attention to their guidance that they may have to use force that they have been forced to quarantine sections of cities and towns and limit travel between cities because people simply aren't listening to the fact that they should stay at home to limit the spread of this disease and president hassan rouhani speaking during a meeting of the n.t. coronavirus headquarters a group of senior leaders that he set up early on as this outbreak began prison austin ronnie stuck struck a much more open the much more transparent tone and he implored people and he said that the precondition to winning this battle against coronavirus the the 1st thing that must happen is for all people of the country to cooperate with the government and government authorities assigned to taking on the corona virus outbreak but the update saying thanks for joining us from tehran well there's also been a spike in corona virus cases across europe. is our correspondent in london and of course real concern. across europe because now there's hardly
6:08 pm
a country that hasn't been touched by current virus. that's right and starting off here in the u.k. where we've seen already a jump of more cases here as well 206 confirmed cases of covert 1000 here that's a rise of 46 and one of the top medical experts in the country said that the u.k. is in fact teetering on the edge of a sustained transmission of covert 19 with the most number of cases are in sight of italy france 716 cases there that's an increase of $103.00 and with the 2 additional confirmed deaths bringing up to a total of 11 of confirmed deaths $1000.00 in france germany as well $684.00 confirmed cases of cove it 19 there but no deaths recorded there as well the netherlands also numbers of jumped from 60 to 188 cases and spain as well as
6:09 pm
475 cases there as well and now the spanish media have said that there is a relation to 60 of those cases being tied to a funeral that took place in the basque country there where. there had been close contacts who have been affected there as well but of course the most pressing concern is italy where there are 4636 cases there as you mentioned the death toll of 197 the largest one outside of china now even with the confirmation of the nicola director the president of italy's last your region as well as the secretary of the center left democratic party one of the parties that's in the coalition government now he's also been confirmed with having the case he made the announcement on facebook but of course there are. the countries also

bracing itself for more results to be released later on the pope himself pope francis has said that he. will not deliver his usual sunday angelus prayer to the crowds instead doing it by live stream as well in order to try and prevent any further outbreak which is completely ravaged the country so far also new for more along the new center thanks for the update certainly from europe let's cross over the atlantic because to the u.s. where at least 15 people have died from the virus the number of confirmed cases is on the rise among those $21.00 people on board a cruise ship docked off the coast of san francisco in jordan explains. as the coast guard flew in a supply of corona virus test kits to the quarantined cruise ship grand princess passengers and crew wonder if they'll be leaving any time soon but u.s. president dahl trump said if it were up to him the 3400 passengers and crew would

have to stay in quarantine if i'd rather have the people stay but i go with them i told them to make the final decision i would rather because i like the numbers being with they are i don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that was our fault trump said this while visiting the centers for disease control and prevention the agency that tracks infectious disease outbreaks in the u.s. the president and the agency have been criticized for downplaying the severity of the crisis some patients and health care workers accuse the c.d.c. of making it harder to confirm coronavirus cases the head of the c.d.c.'s lab denied the allegations and no time during this response has c.d.c. ever denied a request that came from a public health official either state or local to test the patients out of all the patients who needed to be tested and the opinion of the public health officials have been tested but officials also struggle to answer has the coronavirus in the

u.s. been contained we're going to see more cases because we're getting more diagnostics out there but i would say that you know what i said before that at the present time general receiver public remains slow but also on friday new cases were confirmed in houston minnesota colorado and maryland and while sanitation workers tried to scrub the gritty subways of new york the arts and cultural festival south by southwest which brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to austin texas every year has been counseled more than $8000000000.00 federal dollars will be spent on urgent research and treatment of the disease from coast to coast it seems more americans may be deciding to not take any chances until they know it's truly safe to be out and about roslyn jordan al-jazeera washington. michael isikoff is the chief investigative correspondent yahoo news he joins me now from washington d.c.
6:13 pm
good to have you with us on the program do you believe the president the vice president and the c.d.c. really have the cold sentence the american people they've got coronavirus under control. that is exactly the issue on the table because this is a case where the polarization in american body politic the distrust of government and the paranoia and fears all of which have been hallmarks of the trump era really are having an effect because this is people need to be able to trust what their government is saying they need to be able to believe what the president and his top people are telling us in the midst of a public health crisis and after all the years of divisive political combat in the united states and the president's own actions as a polarizer in chief has undermined the confidence that people have in what the
6:14 pm
government says well that's the government but why is the confusion about what the c.d.c. would say because when the c.d.c. speak we expect them to be able to release information in an accurate and timely manner they've been criticized politically and socially what's the problem. well the c.d.c. is part of the united states government and they are answerable to the president and we saw the president go down to c.d.c. yesterday. taking potshots at the governor of washington where the most cases have been confirmed calling the governor jay inslee a snake disputing some of what his own scientists are saying and suggesting he knows more about the path of this virus than the government's own experts so that's the kind of. the kind of actions and behavior that is only going to
6:15 pm
breed more distrust and confusion among the public there are legitimate questions here particularly about the tests available. anthony. who is probably the most respected expert on this subject who says the country is going to need millions and millions of tests we are far short of that right now so it's fair to say the government simply doesn't have a handle on how widespread this virus is right now leading the atlantic a newspaper one of many american publications that's talking about this they say that part of the anxiety seems to be in the way that information is imparted in all of the 50 states whether it's the daily weekly what's every 3 or 5 days that sort of luck of uniformity to be able to tell the public about the testing procedure the testing results and those that have been tested is something that isn't tuna full
6:16 pm
but is a real problem in trying to get the message across as to how widespread the virus might of gold across the u.s. . yeah look absolutely that's the case now part of that is just the nature. of our federal system in the united states where you have states each with their own health agencies. trying to protect their own citizens and not always in a coordinated way with the federal government and with other states that's the nature of the american system but i think you know the bottom line problem is that from everything we've seen the best public health experts in the country do not have a handle on how far the virus has spread in the country we're getting reports of new cases every day in some cases every hour so the numbers by the way are still
6:17 pm
quite well we're. talking about you know approximately $300.00 of poured in cases so far 17 deaths now on a national you know on the international scale that's fairly small but big can be the big question mark is not an adequate number of tests we simply don't know how many people have been infected at this point just. with sort of the. public anxiety about sort of the truth being. how much of a political but we expect to between democrats and republicans. the readiness to impart the right information how they start to treat coronavirus as either a small incident or a pandemic like it seems the rest of the world is dealing with at the moment because it seems the senate which is republican controlled very quick and wanting
6:18 pm
a clear road direction from the white. sure and this comes back to the 1st point i made you know we are. showing the scenes we are reaping the whirlwind as it were of all 'd the political battle and combat we've seen in the country over the last several years so that everything gets politicized you have democrats lambasting. the administration and the president for failing to adequately deal with this public health crisis the president is pushing back and he is looked at far too much in the prism of the political fight rather than the legitimate public health crisis that it actually is what michael isikoff thanks so much for joining us and for your insight from washington d.c. thank you. thank you. well plenty more ahead here all the elves to reduce our

a small part of the $91000000000.00 to foreign creditors that's 150 percent of levels economic output one of the heaviest buttons in the world but the prime minister the president will bank governor have been meeting to reach a decision that's good more than small correspondent zain although he's following about this for us from beirut what does this really need full sort of credit a confidence in lebanon if it defaults. well this is not going to help lebanon at all this country is passing through its worst economic and financial crisis in decades what we understand is that lebanon will announce in the coming hours it's going to default on its debt the 1st time in its history really a turning point a new stage in this financial crisis $1200000000.00 may not seem like a big amount of money for a state but it just goes to show you that this country's foreign currency reserves
6:24 pm
its wind the officials have to make a choice do we pay the debt or do we keep the money the remaining dollars in order to import what we need basic goods fuel wheat medicine levanon needs $10000000000.00 to import those basic goods this year alone so we're expecting the prime minister has son who was who was recently taken office just last month to make the announcement in an hour or so but it just goes to show you how deep the crisis is companies are closing unemployment is on the rise inflation is up by 30 percent and the lebanese liras the local currency is devaluing it has already devalued by 40 percent on the black market so difficult times in the words of the prime minister we are facing immense difficulties and we are no longer able to provide the lebanese people with a decent life. it would look to its friends its friends are few and far between especially arab allies who might have helped in the past but either way all called
6:25 pm
right now. well yes it's not just about the lack of money we've seen lebanon's friends like you mention bail out this country many times in the past but the new government does not have many friends the united states and its allies in the region consider this government hezbollah controlled government an iranian group backed group that they consider a terrorist organization they've been trying to contain iran's growing influence in the region and now you have hezbollah the main power broker in this government and in the parliament so they're not going to come forward and help government and at the same time international donors are not going to just provide money without real structural economic reforms they have been demanding this for some time now for example officials need to trim the public sector but they won't do that because if they do that they lose access to the state's resources resources that they used to provide their own supporters in order to maintain maintain power so these
6:26 pm
international donors are telling the lebanese government unless you carry out the forms you're not seeing any money and the only option they have to avoid further isolation is to turn to the international monetary fund but hezbollah has made clear that there's not going to happen because they view this financial institution as a tool of the u.s. government so really difficult times for this country and the lebanese and many fear that you know more and more people are going to take to the streets or come back to the streets especially if parse measures are going to be announced in the next few days like raising taxes because the government needs to find a way to raise revenue of course we got that decision i will cut you bored i listen to the bible say no thank you. turkey's president there are the one there is expected to head to brussels on monday during a border standoff with the european union last week turkey said it's opening its borders with europe because it could no longer cope with the number of people fleeing the conflict in syria police have fired tear gas of migrants and refugees
