have equal salaries then you have the right to abortion and they need and that they must have equal participation in politics and this is particularly important at this stage here in chile because there will be or very likely will be a new constitutional assembly and it has been a struggle to ensure that women would have parity that in other words that there would be equal numbers of representatives to write that new constitution that women as well as men that was approved by congress just a few days ago but unfortunately the president is now on the lips of most of the people that are marching in front of us and not in very complimentary terms because he said the following and i want to quote him exactly he said very often it's not just the desire of men to abuse women but also the position of women to be abused that caused and out rage on the social networks and on the streets he said that's not what he meant that it was taken out of context but clearly

2:32 am
a race that began with nearly 30 candidates is now down to just 2 serious contenders from on senator bernie sanders and former vice president joe biden biden leads sanders by about 90 delegates in the race for the nomination and the right to face off against president donald trump in november as general election now 6 states vote on tuesday the most closely watched will be michigan where $125.00 delegates will be selected at the day's largest total let's speak to his own daughter who is in detroit for his so all eyes on michigan and that's where the candidates are focusing all their efforts on why is this state's now so important in this race. yeah there's a whole host of reasons for that but primarily as you mentioned this is a state with $125.00 delegates up for grabs on tuesday there are 5 other states that are also going to be voting but they don't have nearly as many delegates as
2:33 am
this state michigan has and this is what it's all timidly come down to now a race for those nearly 1100 delegates that are needed to secure the democratic nomination joe biden has several more than bernie sanders at this point but that is why so much attention is being put on michigan also it's come down to essentially the final 2 candidates for the most part and these are the signs of the 2 candidates you're seeing all over the state of michigan joe biden and bernie sanders but it's not only their signs you see there their selves also campaigning here in this state bernie sanders was here. on sunday joe biden is expected here on monday at a rally as well they're putting a lot of emphasis on michigan because if bernie sanders wins michigan it will show that he is back in this race and very much a contender if not the front runner where if joe biden is able to win this state
2:34 am
and win it convincingly his lead will even increase even more and it could lead to coals for bernie sanders to step out of the race of course but we'll have to see but clearly this is the state everyone is going to be watching on tuesday right and bernie sanders is campaigning right now and speaking at a rally in michigan as we saw in those live pictures. african-american voters gave have been very good to joe biden in states like north carolina. this is also an important vote in michigan. it's a critical vote now african-american voter turnout nationwide was down in the 2016 election to the lowest levels in nearly 20 years only about 58 percent of african-american eligible voters went to the polls no where are you seeing that more than here in the state of michigan especially here in detroit a city of about 700000 people 80 percent are african-american or black american
2:35 am
voters we asked a local lawmaker here exactly why the voting total was down and what are the key issues for black americans here in the state of michigan and this is what he told. african-americans that not a monolithic community you have people at different levels that see this as a huge loss but you have some people that said my life hasn't haven't changed under the democratic leadership nor has it changed at the republican leadership i'm still struggling i'm still dealing with the issues of happiness but if you drop i'm still dealing with the fact that i can't have affordable housing i'm still dealing with the issue of not having affordable insurance and so there are people that understand that we got was always in the white house their struggle is not be an address so we have to have a leadership that will address the issues of the black community and not just tell them to block in a blanket way vote democratic. bernie sanders has done
2:36 am
terrible quite frankly with black american voters so far but he got a huge indorsement on sunday from jesse jackson a black civil rights leader who he himself ran for president twice in the 19 $180.00 s. jackson is here in michigan campaigning for bernie sanders and jesse jackson said in his words at a rally on sunday bernie sanders can win needs to win and will win of course that's all up to the voters here in michigan find out on tuesday kate thank you for that gabriel is on the line for us in detroit where let's. some more about this now to lincoln mitchell who teaches political science at columbia university he joins us from new york thank you very much lincoln for being with us on al-jazeera again now 4 years ago bernie sanders scored an upset win over hillary clinton in the michigan democratic primary just how tough do you think it's going to be for him this time round. well it's important not to think that just because something happened 4
2:37 am
years ago it will happen again the race is different biden is a different candidate than clinton it helps biden frankly that he's a man among a lot of white working class voters men who went with sanders last time but he's very strong with african-american voters but so was clinton so this is going to be a tough race for sanders sinner's has built his coalition out in 2020 largely with latino voters particularly specifically mexican american voters and there's not a lot of them in michigan so i expect michigan to be very close to get back in this race centers has to win and he has to win by more than one or 2 points so it's a it's a steep hill for him right now right and a black college dedicate to democrats as we've heard have been very good to joe biden in places like north carolina south carolina virginia why is bernie sanders not able to perform better with african-americans and can he do better with african-americans in the midwest than he has in the south. or maybe i'll take the
2:38 am
2nd half of that question 1st the state legislator who was on just a moment ago she said african-americans are not monolithic could use absolutely right and one thing we haven't seen too much is african-americans in the industrial midwest and the northeast voting yet we don't and those are that's a different demographic group than southern african-american so so they may go more for sanders we know that younger african-american voters do lean more towards senators and jesse jackson indorsement is significant and i'll tell you why 1st of all jackson actually carried michigan in 1908 in a massive upset a bigger upset than sanders is win in 2016 but it's also significant because in 1988 the number of prominent jewish americans who were supporting jesse jackson you could really count on one or 2 hands and bernie sanders was among them so this is this speaks to how how cinders has been an ally to at least some perks of the african-american world that maybe a lot of people aren't aware of so i think that could help. on the other hand he's
2:39 am
he's not close with the after american leadership in congress he wasn't seen as a kind of loyal lieutenant to obama the way biden was he sounded me has been attacking biden on on things like trade and not so forth but also over support for the war in iraq and also. biden's gaffes these are suddenly issues for joe biden do you think he biden can keep the momentum he has going until the convention and if he does get the nomination you know what will the rationale be to get young people those will support sanders to vote for him what is he offering other than a line about a return to decency the the the way to mobilize young people and i teach young people at mit i teach at columbia which is not which is not always a representative sample but i'm around young people the only way i see mobilizing these folks is by terrifying them about what another 4 years of donald trump will be and any democrat can do that whether it's biden or sanders or had been one of
2:40 am
the other candidates so in that regard i think it's doable but it has to be very negative why didn't doesn't inspire many people particularly many people under the age of about 30 or 40 that's the reality biden is is gaffe prone but that kind of understates it you know these are it's one of the extraordinary things about the race is that we went into this race concerned about biden's age it turns out he's the young guy in the democratic primary of the of the 2 got left standing so for both of them both of these guys are getting quite old we are see if i do or your father or your uncle you'd say you know he's getting old and he's losing it a bit but we're not sure we want to say that about the president did advantage he has is that he is the nominee he'll be running against someone who is in a much weaker mental condition i mean donald trump's incapacity is a much more grave problem on a health level than anything joe biden has faced i think i'm a tale as always very good to talk to you about the sink you very much for joining us on al-jazeera whether the do you tip. now oil markets have tumbled the most since the gulf war
