joe biden extends his lead over bernie sanders a big us democratic presidential race winning the big prize of the night michigan. i'm kim burrell this is al jazeera live from doha also coming up a coronavirus containment zone is put in place around the suburb of new york city with troops sent in to help. the u.k. health minister test positive for a coronavirus she recently attended an event with prime minister abbas johnson. and the disgraced cardinal george pell tries to overturn his child sex abuse conviction the latest from the court in canberra.
8:01 am
joe biden has cemented his frontrunner status in the democratic race for the u.s. presidency he's won the big prize of michigan and the latest primaries build a super tuesday to the home of vice president also took mississippi and missouri 3 more states are being counted it's opposed to biden who's extended his lead of of the month senator bernie sanders is only speak to you from philadelphia where we announced turkey in p. at the front we didn't find. all those who have been knocked down all those have been counted let's be sure this is your campaign just over a week ago many of the pundits declared that too this can be seized. now we're very much in line. i was on
8:02 am
a has more now from detroit michigan black voters here in the state of michigan came out in overwhelming support for joe biden that was very clear he also based on exit polls seem to want a lot of working class white voters in michigan as well which is pretty cool if you add all of that up and that's what you saw with this pretty dominant window by joe biden here in the state of michigan it's been a terrible night for bernie sanders this where we're at right now was supposed to be a bernie sanders sanders victory party it clearly turned into nothing like that a lot of dejected people here that were his supporters and volunteers this was supposed to be the night that bernie sanders revived his campaign and regained momentum neither happened of course speaking to some of his bernie sanders supporters here they weren't in much of a mood at this juncture to talk about supporting joe biden they still some of them
8:03 am
say that they still want to continue on there waiting to hear from bernie sanders to see what's happening in the future what he's going to do bottom line though i think it's going to be hard at least initially for joe biden to win over a lot of bernie sanders supporters but listen it's still it's still very raw at this point the results are still coming in but bottom line this was an absolutely terrible night for bernie sanders on her going to be is an associate professor of political science at emory university and she joins us live from atlanta georgia thank you for your time i'm saying a sentence may not even pass the threshold in mississippi it's very close i think it's 14.9 percent right now is this sand is out of the race. he's probably in that out just yet but this certainly puts him at a severe disadvantage there were only about a quarter of the delegates available tonight as there were last week but joe biden's commanding performance in the 1st 3 states and the fact that he's actually
8:04 am
roughly even with sanders and washington state which sanders may ultimately win suggests that biden is going to widen his lead which is going to make it harder for sanders to catch up and in subsequent weeks as we've been saying michigan is important not just in terms of the number of delegates awarded there but also it was that historically democratic state that voted for trump and 2016 what does that mean that biden won this primary given that context there are a number of issues here 1st it was a big psychological blow to bernie sanders sanders beat hillary clinton in the state it was one of the states that made him very competitive and 2016 so he wanted to repeat that and he was unable to do so but the other thing that's really important is that biden's victory in south carolina could have been easily dismissed as him doing well in a part of the country that won't do well for the democratic party in the general election because the south once you add white voters into the mix becomes a solidly kind of republican region in the country and the fact that biden did well
8:05 am
in the rust belt suggests that he has staying power and that he's putting together a coalition that doesn't just include african-americans but that includes non-black voters from other parts of the country and so it actually shows a strength that i'm not sure people were quite aware that he had about a week and a half ago just how important have african-american voters been for biden and why do they support him. well i mean there are a number of reasons why african-american voters are so important one they make up anywhere from a 5th to a quarter of the democratic party base so they are the most loyal voting bloc in the united states and they go for the democratic party they are especially important in the south where they make up a majority of the democratic primary voters and how they go often determines who the eventual democratic party nominee is biden has won their support for a number of reasons one there's
8:06 am
a certain level of familiarity with them that was certainly enhanced by his service as barack obama's vice president also many african-american voters unlike the rest of the democratic party are more moderate in their ideological leanings and so they would probably gravitate towards a more moderate candidate as opposed to a more progressive candidate and then there's just the element of pragmatism so sanders was espousing new ideas and change and maybe some of the voters are not sure that that's actually what could be donald trump in a general election and so they've opted to go for a choice that you know is more tested more proven and maybe actually be safer and have a broader appeal in the general election really gets talked to that's going to be there an associate professor of political science at emory university. thank you. u.s. national guard troops are being deployed to a suburb of a new york city now thought to be the epicenter of a major corona virus outbreak new rochelle has been sealed off and has the largest
8:07 am
known cluster of cases in the u.s. troops will be certain to help disinfect areas and to quarantine people in the u.k. a health minister has become the 1st british politician to test positive for corona virus the dean doris' is now in isolation it's reported she met hundreds of people in parliament last week and attended an event with prime minister abbas johnson at his residence meanwhile the slowdown of cases continues in china who by province the epicenter of the outbreak reporting just 13 new cases there as well and jordan has more now on the situation in new york state. new a shell is one of the many suburbs just outside new york city and many of the people who live there or work or go to school in cite new york city it also happens to be the epicenter at least here on the east coast of the united states of the corona virus outbreak at least 100 cases have been diagnosed as of tuesday
8:08 am
it's very likely that number is going to go up on wednesday when the reporters next meet with the governor andrew cuomo mr cuomo declared on tuesday that there would now be a 14 day period where basically people who live in a 3 columns 3 square kilometer area of new rochelle will not be able to go to massive gathering places for the public namely public schools houses of worship sporting stadiums and that the national guard would be brought in to make certain that people comply with that order over the 2 week period following there's going to be a massive scrub down as it were and disinfection of the public places all in an effort to try to stop what has become a very rapid spread of the coral a virus in that bedroom community of new york now for more on the situation in china where coronavirus case is dropping let's cross live to sara clockers in hong

kong sara china's local transmission writes a slowing down it's now keeping an eye on cases imported from elsewhere what more can you tell us. that is the case the numbers certainly look to be stabilizing across milan china and the downward trend of not just in fiction but death numbers that continues on choose day national the national health commission or china's health commission reported 22 deaths and 24 new cases of the crown of ice infections and all those new infections 10 of those cases were important and there were travelers confirmed to be arriving in china from italy and the united states are the biggest concern now is certainly the focus from china is looking at the importation of the crowd a virus and certainly that they're increasing or tightening the arrival regulations quarantine restrictions for travelers coming into milan china now the ongoing impact of the implications of the downward trend in the number of cases in china as

saying a number of the corn tain facilities in the temporary hospitals in the who by province shut down as a result simply because the numbers are not there anymore certainly as they were at the beginning when the epidemic broke the outbreak in china and on tuesday we had china's president xi jinping he went to han for the 1st time to visit some of the hospitals and meet some of the people or the health authorities in the medical staff on the front line and the message to them was certainly that there is victory in sight for china's handling of the coronavirus epidemic so i guess judging being is keen to show that everything is under control of that is the case that we are likely to see a return to normal life in the original epicenter any time soon. well certainly the moment the governor is considering rolling out what it's considering a mobile monitoring system which will look to touch relief that the lockdown that's been in place in the who by province for some time we have 60000000 people in that

province 11000000 people in hand and they've been locked in their homes for quite some time now one member of the family is allowed to leave every 2 or 3 days to get key supplies but the moment the government is considering testing the health of all the residents across the province and looking at their health status and what say that health status is assessed they will be put in a category of the low risk people will be allowed to travel so that partial lockdown could be lifted now in another element of news which is just broke in the last half an hour we're looking at cathay pacific and this is one of asia's biggest international airlines it's announced its financial results for 2019 in the last hour or so it's actually that the profits have plunged but they've actually reported a $45000000.00 profit now this is much higher than many had expected but they were warning the finances and the industry that certainly given the scenario that we're seeing at the moment with regards to a drop a massive drop in travel demand in flying they do expect substantial losses by june
