people pay attention to walk around here now david is very good at bringing the news to the world from here. this is al jazeera. hello i'm still raman you're watching the al-jazeera news our live from our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes they are going to give it to me in place you know what is really shocking something we have not been able to forecast and brought us to our knees is how quickly the epidemic spreads a senior doctor on the front lines in italy just governments to create new intensive care capacity immediately to contain the corona virus this spain reports nearly 2000 new cases of coronaviruses border restrictions get even tighter across europe. preparing for extreme coronavirus restrictions supermarket shelves emptied
6:01 pm
out in malaysia a travel ban and border closures are just one hour away. also 2 bomb explosions outside a government office in southern thailand as a coronavirus meeting was taking place. and a 2nd attempt to end months of uncertainty in iraq a former regional governor is named as prime minister designate. and i'm peter scimitar the limburg chief hold emergency talks about 2020 and football's european championships have been called off by you way for as the impact of corona virus continues to be felt. good to have you with us on the news a doctor working at the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in italy has a warning for forty's elsewhere act now italy's the hardest hit country in europe
6:02 pm
with 2158 deaths related to the virus makeshift hospitals are being set up to deal with the spread of the disease and doctors said a ton of says the virus has put health care under unprecedented stress. but as you know what is really shocking something we've not been able to forecast and which brought us to our knees is how quickly the epidemic spreads within 2 weeks now 3 weeks since the beginning of the epidemic we put a total of 1200 patients in intensive care in the majority the secret has been and this should be a strong message for the foreign countries to act early on this in order to avoid like in our case having to chase after it day after day if the spread of this epidemic is not put under control it will bring all hospitals to their knees. in the coming hours restrictions are being imposed in many countries around the world to her and they'll become a lot more extreme. in an attempt to curb the pandemic well much of europe is going
6:03 pm
into lockdown in the past few hours francis sealed its borders just as its neighbor spain reported 2000 new cases bringing its total number of infections to more than $11000.00. live from. southwestern fronts we've been speaking all day really natasha about how french people have been not just waking up now but nearly have a day of this reality this new reality that they've not experience in a country that talks about liberte. yes and of course as you can imagine it is very difficult for people i mean one day your out sniff out fuel in a restaurant and bar you doing your shopping without thinking about it and then a couple of days later it's not down effectively and the government ordering you to stay in your home to print ask a thermos if you want to go shopping for pseudo or if you have to go to work
6:04 pm
because you're out of work at for example the government warning also that the corona virus is spreading fast in the country more rapidly obviously than it is felt it could be controlled at this stage and that is why the french president is taking these really strict measures so it's something that nobody felt they could have necessarily predicted all prissy a few weeks ago that was the sense of the last few days that france could go into lockdown along the same lines as italy because of course several of france be watching those pictures in italy as others have around the world but still what actually happens when you are confined it's your home it's a very different picture indeed so i think people are just absorbing how they're going to work around this how are they going to have to teach their children who can't go to school they're going to have to give them lessons at home and they can organize their routines if they live in very small spaces it's going to be credibly challenging an identity areas in the city so all of these things are ahead for people and we're only just beginning of course because the french president is
6:05 pm
talking about at least 15 days how was the mood chain natasha from when you touched upon it from the sort of time that france is seeing its neighbor italy go into a lockdown and seeing this virus spread to actually hitting home to french people in the urban areas and in the countryside where you are right now that it's actually a reality and it can affect us no matter who we are or where we are. well indeed you know i just think back to a couple of days ago in paris you know a sunny day was the sundays as party mood couple days ago that you know the french people were going to vote in the cool elections even though of course we are in the middle of this corona virus pandemic people were so change they felt comfortable to go out they knew there was a threat we didn't really see many mosques they were being cautious but still people alson about they were gathering in parks you know a few days later and the same population again thinking of those people in paris
6:06 pm
standing in meter parks in supermarkets people with face masks i've seen people in this reached the front row where i am really keeping their distance when they go shopping or in the street or just not in the streets all because i think people are suddenly very frightened and it's not how they felt this is not how they felt a week ago that's for sure and as i said just a few days ago when i felt a difference of course there were those closures there were those restrictions but now it feels totally different when the government saying if you go right in the street and you don't have this a printed permit you have no real reason to be in the street to find 40 year olds that could get higher and you know who are going from there i mean i think that's really reinforce the message to french people the government's very serious about this and there is a real urgency that has to be faced natasha butler thank you very much for joining us from glen in france but spain as reported $192.00 more deaths bringing the total to $491.00 it's the worst affected country in europe after italy police at the
6:07 pm
border have turned vehicles trying to enter the country as part of strict new measures to control the virus it comes as thousands of new cases were reported across the european union which has closed its external borders we're joined now by journalist motherhood at a in madrid. horowitz could have you with us on the program in how much has that changed life everyone in spain especially in the capital. well. not actually about their coming to this situation in spain is quite similar to france i mean like 4 or 5 days ago we were outside in the bars with the sunshine and we were not very concerned we didn't for the forecast what was coming but our life changed in a few days and people are really concerned we're all come find out whoa what i can tell you what that what i can talk about is magic is one of the epicenters of the whole plan. and then hearing spain and we all leave him in flats or apartments
6:08 pm
and we don't go out at all and the only moment of the day that we see other people is our neighbors because we are gathering outside the balconies or outside the windows to cheer the health care the health care workers and to thank them for what they're doing sort of a don't talk a pm we all go out and we start cheering them on thanking them for the hard work they're doing so is the only moment of the day that you feel that you are in a community organizer society that you have someone you know at least to to to look at and to rely on shows that you're still in a society one assumes that under the circumstances you're living in right now the information you're getting from the government comes via television radio and through social media how would you describe the level of communication is it very good is it what you expect right now are they reassuring to the spanish public. yes
6:09 pm
well they're doing a quite good job with there because every day we have a presser from the spokesperson not the health ministry that's dealing with a whole a major emergency situation and there we are having figures of people infected like new day every day people infected people look at death don't want people that have recovered and prime minister is coming out and give him press conference at about 2 or 3 days a week so i think people are quite confident we all are we're all demanding a lot of information we are kind of stuck to the media alley are we are glued to media these has also we following radio television online news but these also has a very dark side because all these fake fake news have been expanding and many people especially and their it people trust whatever they do they get it whatever they read and discuss the fest goes a little bit of panic in the population but i think right now the government is they say is sending good messages and people are tracking a lot going on a lot on
6:10 pm
a personal note obviously you're able to speak to your family and friends not just in spain i'm sure broad as well what is morale like in terms of the people you're speaking to with in space your neighbors your friends your family. well jim main concern of all my friends and colleagues is that most of them have been sent home because they have been fired on the companies so the main worry ears of what's going to happen next i mean these people were working on friday one day and all that were fired they got they got from cause and they were fired and some of them are going to be temporary but others are not dying back to work any time so there's a big big worry about the economy down mentions of the hole or another iris crisis and the already are the government is already sending messages that we have to be very aware of what the consequences are going to be and it's a really critical situation still the main concern right now in spain more than
6:11 pm
running out of food that those were the main worries the 1st days right now is. unemployment benefits it's helpful for small companies that have to close down their businesses and what's going to happen next i mean uncertainty i think is what's damaging the whole situation right now but i have a thanks so much for joining us from madrid more now on the situation in italy where the number of confirmed cases reached almost 28000 as the nationwide lockdown remains in place hospitals are at breaking point and facing major shortages of doctors the government is scrapping final exams for this year's medical graduates and letting them start work early to boost stuff numbers while the lender batali is a resident in the land and has been self isolating for 9 days now and she and her daughter matilda join us now via skype from milan will speak to mathilde in a little while but mother lane let's begin with you about how your coping under
6:12 pm
this lockdown and how you're finding sort of the communication between yourself and the government in this rather difficult scenario. yes it's a very big loss and i. mean if you can imagine the most important being if there is not only 2 people were just going to keep their children going. really really no reason just at the moment of course we think they may but school was all over the territory not really a lot of. us who were mothers clause and the i mean our schooling we did as many tools we can so we will be your conference is we get our work the academia group chat even what's there you know that actually turned it on the computer a lot of it can be figured for now. and we only when we can imagine
6:13 pm
that might be in there she is one of the lucky ones because she has and she can hear us and she's connected every day with her class and i was not on the other hand there are. and there are only but it's a matter of where and to keep their routine as it is if it's as it is it hard to explain to someone like mathilde who looks a little bit sad there at the moment for she's quite happy most of the tide is it difficult to explain that the gravity of what's going on because obviously there's a much more serious note to to the conversation you're having with people that you're in touch with across italy. it exists because we are trying. to terrorize her and i am trying to court to be but the bondage that is you can imagine you being isolated you have no escape from your feelings and your fear
6:14 pm
which we have but as she said she's very shouldn't she be scared but he is good because in a way she can do what what she does and you know it's even clause which is not that she doesn't know yet so we don't really know and these guys. prove that they're written with legal tool. or some kind of maybe she got less than squat but in any case. i am trying to be honest there's been very good situation and she tried to follow the rules as much as she can and to do what it was her job which is learning of course well obviously you've become the tills teacher so i'd like to us matilda what she likes most about school right now and does she like her teacher. with that yeah. all's
6:15 pm
excellent and what's your favorite subject at school. present in. all math lots in my math great i think i think my hearing's going i think you could teach me a few things that about math at the moment i look forward to speaking to you again young lady in the days ahead i didn't realise you could speak english and you speak it very well so thank you very much for helping me out on this program madalena we'll leave it there for now and of course we'll continue to monitor the situation with you thank you very much and to mathilde's for joining us a regular thank you you're going to. buy. it here and i must improve my italian living on the later will roll out some of the most drastic rules at midnight malaysians will not be allowed to leave for 2 weeks and
6:16 pm
its borders are being sealed and are that's led to panic buying in malaysia and neighboring singapore water from flowing in kuala lumpur. government services businesses that provide essential services will be allowed to open but everything else will have to be shut and the few categories that fall into essential services transport health care financial services food so shops supermarkets supermarkets and markets will be allowed to remain open but that didn't stop people from. stockpiling on food and if that show items in supermarkets perhaps for fear that this restriction on movement order could go on for longer than 2 weeks now but the most stringent measure has to do with malaysia's borders even for people who want to travel into state they're going to need permission from the police before they can move before they can travel and its international borders are going to be shut malaysians will no longer be allowed to leave the country for the next 2 weeks and
6:17 pm
foreigners will not be allowed in and this is affecting not just malaysia but also in singapore malaysia is an important trade partner for singapore singapore imports a lot of food fresh produce from malaysia and despite government assurances that food items and other goods will still be able to move freely across the borders that didn't stop people in singapore from panic buying. over to washington where the trumpet ministration is seeking an $850000000000.00 stimulus package to protect the economy let's get more on this from our white house correspondent complete halted he's standing by and we are expecting kimberly sort of coronavirus time to be speaking shortly what can we expect from them today. yeah that's right this is expected to happen that briefing in the white house briefing room in the next hour or so and that stimulus package that you talked about there certainly one of the questions it's a bit controversial already we've had a bill passed in the house that would allow for paid sick leave also emergency food
6:18 pm
for children and the elderly this now moves to the senate but in the discussions between the congress and this white house there is an effort to really pad out this legislation if you will adding that $850000000000.00 which essentially to a payroll tax cut the white house hopes would flood the u.s. economy with cash in order to sort of combat some of the downturn that has occurred as a result of coronavirus what's controversal about this is it could include some bailouts for the cruise industry as well as the airline industry that of course have been very hard hit so we special questions about that but we also expect to get kind of an update on where things stand as the u.s. president has taken a decidedly different tone with respect to corona virus in the last 24 hours and this really this president really downplaying likening it almost to the seasonal flu in the last 24 hours he's now saying it's bad and that the u.s. is fighting a quote invisible enemy so we're expecting to hear what the efforts are as this
6:19 pm
united states continues to try and flatten the curve if you will in terms of the number of cases but we still expect those cases to rise with the availability of testing that has still been a problem in this country something i can tell you a lot of ordinary americans are kind of scratching their heads about because they see us for. the president can get access to a test celebrities can get access to a test but ordinary americans are still being told that they're not sure when that testing will occur for them so a lot of tough questions about that to be answered by this task force and of course that is coming up in the next hour of course kimberly you know throughout the day for us as well nearly 6 30 in the evening here in doha it's just about what quarter past 10 where you are in the morning in washington we've been following this of you see through the day and over several days and through our correspondents you know we have been asking how the public at large are reacting also to questions of there are they asking what have they been asking of our correspondents i mean what's the general sense you get considering we are hearing
6:20 pm
a whole range of views from across the u.s. about coronavirus and about the way it's being dealt with by civil society by local politicians by the federal government. there's a lot of frustration still in the united states have bout how this is being rolled out there's this feeling that because there was a lapse in getting sort of ahead of the testing and making that available the problem is far worse than is actually being revealed as so there's this distrust of the government there's also near panic in the terms of the grocery store is trying to get food we have cases now here in the united states were food trucks as they had to supermarkets are now having to travel with a police escort in order to prevent people from trying to jump onto these trucks and get the food that is something that we really never seen in the united states before but it gives you kind of a visual image of the level of panic that many americans are feeling because they feel number one that they don't have enough information and number 2 they don't
6:21 pm
trust their government that there is going to be enough food enough supplies should more and more counties and cities have to shelter in place such as we've seen out in california as we're hearing may be happening in a broader range in new york state so the feeling is that it is going to get worse not better and that has left many americans feeling very very anxious or check in with you later kimberly when the tough force make a presentation later can we hope that the the white house. iran is close 3 of its holiest sites to visitors despite strong opposition from protesters trying in the cities of mashad home and childhood they were shut down to contain the spread of the current virus the government says 135 more people have died taking the death toll to 988 and iran has temporarily freed to around 85000 prisoners in response to the pandemic last week the un us tyrone to release them to help stem the virus spread the same destroyed because more from the capital
6:22 pm
. certainly as far as the security apparatus is concerned they would not have released these prisoners if they once going to be able to bring them back into custody by april 3rd that is the date for the end of this furlough this was agreed to by the judiciary by the justice system or a latent in february and they've been slowly releasing tens of thousands at a time 1st it was 35000 that around 50000 and then last week it was around 70000 and now we're seeing this latest number of 85000 announced earlier today now these prisoners are generally nonviolently offenders nonviolent offenders with short prison sentences the number that has been announced today includes some political prisoners as well but they all should expect to go back into prison in april on the face of it this certainly seems like a magnanimous decision by a government that is stricter that is religious at a time of a national health crisis but we have to look beyond that and put it in context of the prison system itself that the jails generally here are considered overcrowded
6:23 pm
preventable illnesses are a constant problem and we have heard reports from prisoners inside that there is chaos in terms of trying to prevent infections of the coronavirus in the prison system and some prisoners have even said that they've had to provide their own so certainly overcrowding remains a problem and this is certainly not something that they're doing just out of the kindness of their hearts this is a practical measure because the prison system can't perhaps provide the required medical services that the prisoners might need. almost 2000 cases of coronavirus in the united kingdom increasing by 400 in just a day the government has ramped up its response to the outbreak have to scientists advise the number of infections and deaths would spiral without trusting action prime minister boris johnson has asked people to avoid unnecessary contact and travel chief scientific advisor patrick vallance says the virus would kill up to 20000 people in the u.k. the foka is our correspondent in london the center and neve as we spoke to
6:24 pm
a correspondents are. around the world throughout the day and they've all been very clear about how their respective governments in those countries have been very clear and direct about what the public do and do not need to do the u.k. response has been pretty vague according to some critics and it's not what the public there need right now. yes largely because of being multiple interpretations of the science what british people have been told over the past 2 weeks is very greatly and that's demanded different things of the british public which has led to to a certain extent a different degree of confusion what we saw last week was a british government government championing something called herd immunity where they said that as much as 80 percent of the population would need to be exposed as a virus for people to have a long term immunity to it should it come back here on year but of course if 80 percent of the population is exposed to it that's $50000000.00 people modeled into that as a potential death toll of one percent that's around half
6:25 pm
a 1000000 people the figures a say could end up losing their lives to this virus what the government has now done is introduce something called mitigation to reduce the figures but again the death toll is still high around 250000 so the latest bit of advice coming from the british government is something called suppression which has been seen in multiple countries across europe in france and germany spain and italy which is basically introducing measures on multiple fronts self isolating social distancing quarantining add to that of course you know public hygiene and personal hygiene as a world if all of these things are taken seriously and rigorously implemented within the population according to the scientists the death toll could be civic significantly lower in the 10s of thousands but of course we've got boyce johnson making only recommendations at this point not to go to pubs and restaurants and bars and so on and so forth rather than actually enforcing anything so at the
6:26 pm
moment there seems to be a bit of a tension between the science and what society is actually doing and being told to do indeed the picture is quite clear on mainland europe where we can see that the scenario is very well coordinated and the governments respectively are very direct with the publics in terms of for example one particular issue we've been talking about through the day is this collection of ventilators that hospitals will need and within the e.u. they're actually getting those together now primarily from island. yeah that's right a big surprise to many that arland is actually one of the biggest producers of ventilators and that will be a great support to the european union and of course the e.u. the shannons own have agreed to close its borders in total so we're talking about all members of the schengen e.u. members as well and associated nonmembers so countries like the u.k. are included in that norway also $31.00 countries in total. very very soon will
6:27 pm
close their borders to all external visitors all 3rd party countries mirroring to some extent what donald trump did in the united states when it came to travelers coming from from europe and elsewhere in the world let's not forget the e.u. its cornerstone key cornerstone is the movement of people goods and services to do this is incredibly unprecedented but what the european commission european leaders are doing is increasing the channels of communication yes encouraging things on ventilators to be distributed around the block and pooling their resources that appears to be the next step closing borders yes but at the same time talking to each other and see what resources can be shared need barkha from our london broadcast center thanks for joining us they are break means that there are lots of words being used here on the use of online and in your communities that you might not have heard of before his alexia brian to clarify everything for you. the corona
6:28 pm
virus outbreak is moving fast there's always a new update new advice and it can all same a bit confusing and overwhelming so let's start with corona virus itself it's an umbrella term for 7 viruses that interfere with the way we breathe from a common colds to something real serious this latest virus causes a disease that's been hauled 9 tain the name comes from corona virus disease 2019 and the symptoms often start with a cost for a favor and shortness of breath most people will recover without needing special treatment but some will become seriously ill usually older people and those with existing health problems and any of us can spread the virus through tiny droplets from coughing or breathing this map from johns hopkins university shows how far it spread in just 12 weeks or so with more than 180000 cases worldwide and that's why
6:29 pm
we're all being told to engage in social distancing a term now trading on twitter keeping at least an ace or a pass in some countries restaurants schools parks and places of worship are being caused to stop people gathering together because you're just putting it the beauty of this fish if you really need to stretch your legs do it on your own or with those you live with keep your distance from others and under no circumstances see people who are not from your home. the british prime minister says that without drastic action cases can double every 5 to 6 days now is the time for everyone to stop non-essential contact with. and to stop unnecessary travel. we need people to start working from home where they possibly can and you should stop avoiding pubs clubs theaters and other such social
6:30 pm
venues this is all to flash on the curb slowing the spread of the virus so that our health care systems don't become overwhelmed the curve represents the number of cases over time so flattening that means preventing a huge surge of new cases in a very short period of time delaying transmission keeps more people safe and that's what they're managing to do and south korea which at one point had the highest number of cases outside china compare that to italy where the outbreak quickly spiraled out of control reporting thousands of new cases every day and how long is all this for scientists say that's the big question because right now we're in uncharted territory well still ahead here on the news books the credit virus trend but the palestinian territories isn't taking any chances and in sport the games will go all the international olympic committee continues to bank tokyo 2020 despite coronavirus those stories after the break.

hello the winds are coming up again throughout the arabian peninsula and eventually levant and iran and you see the clouds over turkey is developing storm here so the picture on wednesday is the increasing likelihood of shadows rain mostly for the lebanese coast israel and more officially in syria of course the high ground that being snow the winds further south of war directions but the n.t. kota means dust up towards riyadh bahrain qatar for example and then this brisk wind i think in northern side you've also got potential to pick up the sand even produce sandstorms which is like to be an enhanced risk in northern egypt and again those and sadly in jordan during services still showers on the coast of lebanon still showers in northern syria still some snow showers up in turkey but iraq's dry

commonly used services like face time and skype a historic breakthrough this has not been done before either in addition states of the authority to cover tele health services for their medical patients. by doing just the be. should is that seeing the doctor per se but this seeing the doctor so there's no getting close during this time we will not enforce applicable h i pay penalties so that doctors can greatly expand care for their patients using tele health so the penalties won't be enforced we encourage everyone to maximize use of tele health to limit exposure to the virus it's been a very successful. method of communication but never used on a on a scale like we're going to use a tele health. and they will be able to also better maintain hospital capacity by doing this earlier this morning i spoke with executives from america's fast food

industry wendy's mcdonald's all of the the big ones burger king. and they were great for talking about. the pick ups in light of yesterday's guidance you heard to avoid eating or drinking at bars restaurants or public food courts we discussed the important role that the drive thru pick up and delivery service can play in the weeks ahead so that's happening and they have been fantastic they have been absolutely fantastic and they've been doing it already but they're keeping it open and smaller staffs and very capable people and very capable companies and they're doing it pick ups or gardens yesterday or does americans to take action for 15 days to help stem the outbreak so it's a 15 day period i guess now would say it's a 14 day period 15 days from yesterday and we're asking everyone to work at home
6:43 pm
a possible postpone unnecessary travel and limit social gatherings to no more than 10 people by making shared sacrifices and temporary changes we can protect the health of our people and we can protect our economy because i think our economy will come back very rapidly so it's 15 days from yesterday we'll see what happens after that if we do this right. our country and the world frankly but our country can be rolling again pretty quickly pretty quickly. we have to fight that invisible enemy that. i guess unknown but we're getting to know it a lot better today the senate is taking up coronavirus legislation that includes free testing for those who need it as well as paid sick leave and family medical leave for work is affected by the virus we're also. method to getting small businesses that support that they need in fact one of the things we talked about with the fast food operations we spoke to the chairman and c.e.o.
6:44 pm
of all of the companies but one of the things we discussed is exactly that getting small businesses support and flexibility that they need for themselves and for their workers and that's being worked on right now at my direction secretary minucci is meeting today with senators on additional stimulus packages i can tell you this meeting with them late until the night last night and. for a big part of the day yesterday and tremendous things are happening there's great spirit tremendous spirit and i can say that for republicans and democrats. i can say that with respect to governor cuomo we had a great talk this morning we're both doing a really good job and we're coordinating it and we agree you know different states need different things and we we agree on that 100 percent but we have a good talk and i think we're right down the same track and it's going to be very successful new york has a. pretty big problem i guess would be the number one hot spot it's no fault of
6:45 pm
anybody's it's just the way it is but we're working very closely together we're also getting fema very much involved they've been involved and now we're getting them to a different level and we'll have everything ready were dealing with the army corps of engineers should that be necessary we have them working in some cases on standby in other cases but my conversation with andrew cuomo was a very very productive one and a very good one i appreciate that we're giving relief to affected industries and small businesses and we're ensuring that we emerge from this challenge with the prosperous and growing economy because that's what's going to happen it's going to pop one day we'll be standing possibly up here will say well we won and we're going to say that sure if you're sitting there we're going to say that and we're going to win and i think we're going to win faster than people think i hope later today i'll meet with the leaders from the theorem and it tourism industry as well as
6:46 pm
industrial supply retailers and wholesalers to discuss their critical roles as you know i met with the department store people all of the retailers the big ones including wal-mart now others and it was great meeting they're stocking up their stores like they have devastated them before we're trying to get people to actually buy less if that's possible buy less. don't take everything just buy what you need for a while it's going to stay open. all hours of the day and it's really been they've been fantastic we're taking aggressive action now as one nation and one family so that america can rebound stronger frankly stronger than ever before and we recognize that while many american workers can work from home many others cannot many of our health care providers 1st responders and men and women in the food service and manufacturing are showing that they're showing up and standing up to provide us with the goods and services we need so we want people to stay home where
6:47 pm
they can but in many cases when you talk about food service and manufacturing certain items in particular they are they're going in and they're practicing all of the safety rules and regulations that we talk of a show that i'd like to just introduce trade vice president mike pence will save you words and then i'll make some other introductions thank you very much. thank you mr president good morning should be very clear to the american people that president trump has initiated not only the whole of government approach but the whole of america approach and the president's interaction even today and through the course of this day with leaders in industry around the country reflects that we're not only bringing the full weight of the federal government to bear but the full weight of the american economy and i know i speak of you have for the president when i say how inspired we are at the way the american people have stepped up in the way that american businesses large and small have stepped up this truly been inspiring. our task force even watching mike pence vice president
6:48 pm
thanking the president for his words as the u.s. covered 1000 tons false makes its various statements about how that progressing a president to a very thorough in what he wanted to get across listening into all of that with all called white house correspondent kimberly how it came to have to be said the president touched all bases raney updating us that he's been speaking to a large proportion of the. corporate industry be at fast food c but sounding very upbeat about his response and his government's response. yeah he is but this is certainly a less donald trump although you're right he did certainly project optimism in terms of how this country will he hopes in the coming weeks and months rebound something that he said we're going to win faster than people think he seems to be
6:49 pm
looking at this now kind of in warlike terms that he yesterday called this an invisible enemy he made a reference to coronavirus being that invisible enemy again in this moments where he spoke to the press he's really once again identified this timeline 15 days as of yesterday now we're into the 14th day where this is the opportunity for the united states to stem the outbreak so that it doesn't reach the effort proportions being seen in italy right now so there's an acknowledgement by this president that this is critical of a much more somber tone as guest social gatherings are limited as people are working from home and recognizing that this is going to have an enormous economic cost so you heard there the president talking about how there has already been passed in the house one piece of legislation to help in the short term ordinary americans dealing with coronavirus but also how his white house is pushing for an additional package that would flood the u.s.
6:50 pm
economy with cash help those small businesses that have been disproportionately affected but also the major industries as well including not only the cruise industry but also the major banks and that's where things get a little bit more controversial so the u.s. president trying to sort of project that this is a situation very much under control but there's no question that as the questions from reporters follow up there will still be some tough questions about why testing has not been more readily available to the ordinary american of course complete will continue to monitor what the president has to say can be held to a white house correspondent in washington d.c. . well it's time for sport now his peter thank you so much as expected football's euro 2020 championships have been postponed because of coronavirus and pushed back one year to 2021 the tournament was due to be played across 12 cities in 12 european countries but football across the continent has ground to a halt with all major domestic leagues suspended in england spain italy and france
6:51 pm
to name just a few there's still no guarantee the seasons can be completed but delaying the euros does give them more of a chance if the pandemic is brought under control we all know that. this terrible virus that has all across europe. made football and all life in europe quite impossible we knew we have to stop the competitions. we think that postponing the euro is the only chance to get a chance to national leagues and all the club competition to finish their competition but also that is not sure for now but we should now think about the health of the fans of the players and the players and of course we have to think about football as a whole whole ecosystem of football that's why we have decided today that we
6:52 pm
postpone the euro and we have 100 percent full support of. all 55 national associations european leagues european club association and 50. now sports correspondent lee wellings joins us now live leave no surprise with this decision by you a for. this is absolutely the decision that you want to have to take in these circumstances and storage circumstances up to the last guy here makes perfect sense that the resulting see how he forwards all movement remains in place the 12 sit ins they were ok with it remains in crisis go in with the if there's any child's 3rd down the line that they might actually consider reverting to just one harvest but that's a lot of down the line then what's really significant as well as a lot of talk about it because i spoke to everyone involved in the european car

appliance. representatives about whether citizens can very well the domestic scene is going to finish and one of the things about moving the you can change is it opens up the possibility for matches to be played in some manner this is where reality muscatine will go when she's building. across this ship in some us have to doubt so i think that what happens in europe in leeds where the sun might have to really end declare not a more it's whether they do find a wine supply in the later this year it all depends of course on what happens over the next few weeks we coronavirus it was modest in what far longer to go while the people would expect to like all full and european football will look very good by next year with all of these names can be managed is
6:54 pm
something again you think the us is just discussions lead to be had that they do have. we'll see if i actually can get any book like war absolutely have to be done now was making sure everyone knew that the european championship was. least a with us because there was also a big meeting about 2020 today and the international olympic committee says it's not going to make any drastic decisions and remains committed to holding the games in 4 months time the i.o.c. made with international sports federations on tuesday to discuss changes to the qualification process which has been decimated by coronavirus a so absolutely no talk of canceling the games organizers in the japanese governments have repeatedly said it will go ahead as planned in july and august on tuesday prime minister shinzo abbay said he had secured backing from the g 7 countries olympic committee i have gained support from g 70 the tokyo olympic and paralympic games will be realized and fully held as proof of mankind's victory
6:55 pm
against the new coronavirus. ok leave the i.o.c. in japan are carrying on with this line that it is going ahead what do you make of this approach. well obviously there was a huge amount of optimism involved inside but they tend to still go ahead of course this is changing. the money hour and the giant we have seen and it's like the wind at the international olympic committee approach is don't mind can't they give themselves as much chance as possible the games to take lives as they want and when i want them with their own destruction it's very different to look at something like doubling of the cost of going or threats from security so we've had disease that is far less threatening than karada virus found out why to hold down a national state plus very very different time is running out.

the insulin and is in the long so. they have until the end of my children weeks if not years that there's not a chance to make a decision i think it is either need to be made a lot. yes or no a lot more. and you've all until needs to take last time is one of you know the i.o.c. to make because they were things thank you so much for it's good talking to you and over in south america the continent's biggest football tournament the cup america has also been postponed until 2021 argentina and colombia were set to co-host this year's event it was the fake pace of the same time as the euros but the coronavirus has now put an end to those plans south america's premier club competition the couple of her daughter has had already been suspended before the finance committee . horse racing is also being impacted by coronavirus the kentucky derby the 1st
