trump's controversial comments about china. governments around the world are doing whatever it takes to stop the spread of covert 19 the question is are they going too far. more than 200000 people have been infected by the corona virus around the world but there is cause for some hope out of china it's reporting no new local cases for the 1st time since the outbreak began in december. province which has seen 3130 deaths has 0 new local infections all new cases 34 of them involve people arriving in the country. it was yellow even sure that we are delighted to see this double 0 increase this means today we've seen the dawn after so many days of hard efforts it also means our control measures and medical

treatment methods have been working very well. things have deteriorated across europe the current of the pandemic italy recording 475 deaths on wednesday the highest number of fatalities on a single day for any country in the united states president trump has taken another drastic measure to tackle covert 19 by invoking the defense production act it's a wartime step it allows him to draft in the military to produce master ventilators and respirators and also expand hospital capacity across the u.s. now here's the overall picture for you our interactive map here of the johns hopkins medical university that gives live updates on the total number and individual country data total confirmed numbers 218824 total deaths around the world 8810 the total number of people who've recovered that we know all
11:03 am
84118 and that also gives you that kind of drop down menu of different numbers for different countries and different regions you can see there the the global hot spots north america the u.s. europe bits of the middle east and of course china let's bring in katrina you who is our correspondent for us live in beijing so on the face of it katrina is good i guess no new cases being reported but over what timeframe. that's right so this is the 1st day that we've had 0 or new cases reported in a province and that's a huge deal it's quite a milestone because not only is this the 1st country that appears to have been able to break this chain of local transmission it's also the original place of where this outbreak started in 160 china is that 80000 cases within 3000 deaths the
11:04 am
majority in this place and to have 0 cases is really really remarkable so we've had thousands and nurses and doctors who were flown into kuwait province and on they've started going home because there is that not that many patients left to treat or the temporary hospitals that were opened up have now closed but at the same time as as you mentioned we china is is cautiously optimistic we're not out of the woods yet there are still 7000 people suffering from this illness in china being treated and now there seems to be a new threat cases coming from abroad we've had in the last 24 hours 34 cases announced $21.00 of those cases in beijing and keep in mind china has about 100000 people coming into the country every day well than 5000 flying into the capital beijing alone so keeping those numbers down is going to really continue to be a big challenge and the government has really started to focus on tightening regulations when it comes to people traveling into the country from overseas and
11:05 am
this lockdown is by no means all of it travel any travel is still heavily restricted here in china everywhere you go people are still wearing masks temperatures are still being checked schools are still closed and workplaces are still having disrupted hours so definitely keeping those numbers down will remain a challenge although this new cases here and who is still something that people are very happy about here katrina thanks very much let's bring in dr john mccall's he's a leading researcher in the corona virus outbreaks and a clinical professor in pathology at university of hong kong he joins us from hong kong john mickel welcome to al-jazeera what's your reading of these numbers out of china. well look i think that's your cross binder to set this is a very good news because before people have been talking about the only way to stop the fosters be getting the natural immunity to the 60 cent or the vaccine but what china has shown is that basically that using these very aggressive measures that you can actually control the infections and we're seeing the same here in hong kong
11:06 am
and in singapore where if you restrict the rivals and the only have a look at the imported case and keep the local cases very low and that is actually a very good thing what about importing cases because the beginning to kind of loosen the stays surrounding international travel so is there or isn't there a risk that people are going to china going back home to china for understandable reasons and they're taking it with them yeah well you see as it was now happening in hong kong is that where you they were saying the people arriving i mean you had a 14 day car and seen irrespective of whether or not there are hong kong as a dancer or what but tourists so by doing that and that least you were then missing gating and stopping the possibility of are spreading well into the community so whilst it may seem a bit draconian i think from now on countries should actually be inside looking at not the cases but be splitting them into the important cases in the law who cases
11:07 am
because in court cases you can control through the border measures and through the current ceiling what do you think happens next is this the beginning of a downward trend in china. i don't not only in china but also you know what we're now seeing in both the these has these asian regions both as i mentioned in both in the in taiwan singapore hong kong is if we can keep these local cases down and also restrict the encoded cases then they then hopefully this is where that may come into effect now whether something which as you know there's lots of discussions going about was not whether one had any effect some of the research is being done by colleagues oligarchy shows that this virus is actually very temperature sensitive so once you get a $37.00 degrees so the modeling environment is only about 2 days but when you get
11:08 am
to about 4 degrees it's allez basic you know drop hints of models so hopefully once we do get warmer weather and within the environment be less chance of the past become stable but as you know i think you'll be very much where is whole issue of the temperature it is a very controversial area but b.h.o. has put up as it moves number one or number 2 of the myths of private parts but i think that we should be hoping that the weather might be on our side of this one so extrapolating what you're just saying their docs and i calls i guess it be fair to say we shouldn't get complacent despite the numbers out of china so just walk us through the basic precautions that all of us should still be taking. voisey's talked about not be complacent but also that the other countries right now in europe which are facing a lean this onslaught can actually take some solace in that it will be on teen methods and the social distancing to well actually in the end in the short term
11:09 am
will be affected and so they so they should they should be seeing that the china model a model singapore model is one which has been proven to have results so well see and it might be having causing some concern in some piece countries when they look to to us they can actually see that this will actually should break down the number of cases but as you say correctly set is that you know hong kong certainly not complacent and there's a void in this concern about this 2nd wave or the 2nd brittle and so they're being very aggressive that make sure that it doesn't leads into a into an another outbreak how do you make sure if you want to apply that logic to all the european countries because there's not a one size fits all approach in europe there's not a one size fits all in the united states when it comes to individual states individual governors what they are doing should everyone have adopted the chinese model of looking after this from day one. i think there's
11:10 am
a chinese model there's you know there's these hong kong model is a singapore model but i think it's the restriction in the border entries and also they know this social distancing those sorts of measures it measures have been you know i think one can say those have been shown to him to be quite effective. and i think that's what the european countries now jane with now they need more strictures on the border and now with more and more of the school closures and the social distancing so that i think mostly european countries i'm now adopting this area and also in regions of the united states. ok we'll leave it there dr john nicholls there in hong kong thank you very much thank you very much well the crisis shows few signs of ending across europe and the world health organization is warning not enough is being done laura burton manley picks up that story from there . as the number of recorded coronavirus cases to sponsor 200000 the

world health organization announced the 1st plan of that seems underway the start of a long battle this virus is presenting with president target but it's also an unprecedented opportunity to come together as one against a common enemy an enemy against humanity as the world's some countries own story enough testing to stem the virus italy has reported the highest one day death toll in any nation so far 475 who killed by the bars they have 1st of all cardboard the army to join in in the area a bit early where the outbreak has been. at its worse so the army has set up hospital camps and that was not seen before there is a great worry china officials because of 8.3 percent of how care

is a big incentive not to be out in public if you don't have a certificate allowing me to leave the home the police can fine you up to $150.00 so out in spain they've already arrested dozens of people the going out since in lockdown started at the weekend but it's not stopped these housebound madrid residents from protesting the demanding of former king juan carlos donates millions of dollars he reportedly received from saudi arabia to the spanish help system in london it's quite unusual but nobody's been told to go higher but in parliament prime minister bars johnson faced demands to take a more proactive stance more i'll be waiting so long for mass testing i'm wrong i also show distancing measures maybe just a gesture and a way said boris johnson did make one long expected announcement of the schools

all across the north the northwest is counted streaming in bringing small rain with it and also some cooler meanwhile things are becoming a little bit more unsubtle across areas of portugal and spain but have a look at this we have girls still got some nice snow in the mountain tops in germany and those low levels we have the cherry blossom out so it's fairly mild we've got a bit of the next couple of days but nothing really in the way of rain just maybe a scattered showers working its way through northern sections of poland still rather unsettled through central and eastern areas of turkey mostly rain and then certainly we have some rain pushing in across will central regions of the u.k. but it's beginning to develop across areas of portugal and spain becoming really quite widespread as we head through friday and actually getting quite heavy as well further to the south meanwhile those temperatures there radio above the average they were unsettled generally across much of central europe but look at these temperatures in vienna the average is about 10 celsius this time of year so 18 on thursday up to 20 on friday it will feel quite cold on saturday as it dips down to
11:16 am
80 degrees celsius no doubt generally throughout northern africa but again for the next couple of days thursday and friday widespread rain tomorrow and eventually pushing on into algeria. join the colobus conversation after the bubble to the people to expand their brains maybe have a different view this is a dialogue that women in cambodia are in fact telling their here we don't know how much they're getting paid for it it's hard to track it's hard to treat everyone has a voice tell us what you think and your conversation could be a right here. we need to step away from gaming people are not necessarily game perfect this is a journey of progression not perfection on how to 0. welcome

back you're watching al-jazeera live from a reminder of our top stories this hour there have been no new local corona virus infections across china for the 1st time since the outbreak began in december all new cases are reported to be people returning from abroad china has begun easing its locked out of millions of people. italy has recorded the highest single day number of deaths from the virus since the outbreak began 475 people died there on wednesday it's only has been in lockdown for almost 2 weeks. to the u.s. now where president trump has signed into law a relief package the promise is free testing for anyone who needs it all 50 states have now reported cases of the virus but the drug was also questioned about labeling the illness as

the white house is urging congress to pass more legislative packages in the days ahead seeking a total of about one trillion dollars to flood the u.s. economy with cash the stated intention to ease the burden of big businesses as well as provide financial relief to each citizen. some democrats continue to insist the overall response is still too slow we're behind the 8 ball on tests and we're soon going to be behind the 8 ball and i see you there beds in ventilators as more and more people get sick. the administration didn't pay attention to tests and now we're paying the price chinese virus in the midst of all this president trump is insisting on calling the coronavirus chinese virus even as reporters asked whether he was being racist generation whether it comes from

of the problem how can you make jokes during such a serious situation how can someone govern like this. look they're dealing with something new as a matter of fact this president is so unprepared that he's been downplaying the issue and now he's on t.v. wearing a mask but he said absurdities over and over. almost $700.00 cruise ship passengers are returning to the u.k. from cuba after the island permitted a british ship with confirmed virus cases to dock cuba allowed the ship in after barbados the bahamas and the united states all refused the captain's request to come ashore or gaston as the story. after more than a week adrift at sea the british cruise ship the braemar arrived into an industrial port west of the capital of ana on wednesday after a torturous journey the crew seemed elated to have finally landed passengers descended from the boat and were bussed to safety in a rescue mission executed by the cuban and british governments i'm conscious that this has been
11:22 am
a difficult and uncertain journey for the passengers and for the crew and i'm very grateful to the cuban government for enabling this operation to go ahead the braemar had been stranded at sea for over a week and was denied authorization to dock in the dominican republic the bahamas and the u.s. but cuba allowed the ship to come in saying a sense of humanity was required to halt the pandemic. we cubans are proud to step up in a situation like this we are convinced and sure that we can deal with anything that comes up as we did with the bola cuba has shown repeatedly it can deal with complicated situations and come out successfully. but there's fear on the island that allowing the ship to dock could allow the virus to spread here the island has registered 11 confirmed cases of people with corona virus so far and its 1st casualty an italian man in his sixty's has died. the cash strapped island has so far opted to keep its borders open the economy relies heavily on tourism and wants

government will keep evaluating the outbreak situation both in the country and internationally as well as its economic impact closely and carefully the virus at an icon of thai culture may remove any lingering complacency about a crisis that could deliver an economic knockout. thailand's economy was already struggling after a coup and 5 years of military rule last year's election did little if anything to brighten the outlook and this situation will almost certainly send it into recession. coronavirus and the measures to contain it have altered the economic and social landscape of bangkok particularly its notorious night life one of the most vibrant in the world the government ordered to close by came when business was already dramatically declining partly because tourist arrivals are down almost 77 percent this year bar owners are worried the enforced closures could be extended in

governments globally are announcing strict measures to contain the virus raising questions about individual freedoms and privacy rights during a pandemic israel has given its security agencies the power to track the mobile data of people suspected of having the virus the government will use the information to force them into quarantine on one those have come into contact with them south korea has taken similar steps by using mobile phone and satellite technology to track potential carriers and the funk is a research of the watchdog freedom house she says strict measures must be put in place to ensure people's privacy isn't at risk once the pandemic is over we know from a public health perspective that it can be beneficial to track infected or potentially infected people below are really concerned about is that this location tracking this and that health related information is going to be used for other purposes particularly by governments who are using surveillance to track down after

mr giving rights offenders or journalists or even opposition figures and see if this information has to be collected which i think in order to justify the collection we have to ensure that it is scientifically supported as a way to protect public health and we need to ensure that the restrictions are as narrow as possible and so then when we get out of this our privacy protections are still there because what's happening is these current restrictions could have a lasting effect a long after we get to operate under control going to be a big challenge and it's something that we see posts you know terrorist attacks or other type of crises and that's why it's very important for our tech companies who are making these tools for civil society groups ordinary citizens to really understand what type of limitations are happening now so that once we get past this really scary time we can fight again to to have our privacy rights activists and free expression and freedom of sensation in assembly. now crowds of university students in the u.s.
