1:00 pm
this is their story through the lens of local filmmakers we see people making sacrifice and walking in off of mission this is what i want the world to see survivors a witness documentary on al-jazeera. this is al-jazeera. santa maria this is the news hour from al-jazeera iran's president says he is considering lifting coronavirus restrictions by the beginning of april despite new cases being reported is a spike in cases of covert 19 from international arrivals in china but again no local infections for a 3rd day the u.s. is closing its borders with both mexico and canada for non-essential travel to
1:01 pm
contain the virus and we'll look at coping with it as well how to protect your mental health whilst practicing social and physical distancing while the number of cases is comparatively low across africa if that changes will health systems be able to cope. and in sports olympic boss thomas back admits for the 1st time different scenarios are now being considered for this year's games usa swimming has formally asked for the tokyo olympics to be delayed by 12 months. the coronavirus pandemic has hit another grim milestone in the global terror death toll has now passed 11000 and in china where numbers have been dropping they've actually seen a jump in imported cases up to 269 which is sparking fears of maybe a 2nd wave of in fact. just as china starts to recover from the initial outbreak
1:02 pm
let's go around the world now the pandemic has governments imposing stricter unprecedented measures for example the u.s. government closing its borders with mexico and canada for all nonessential travel is really this number was extraordinary 627 deaths recorded on friday the biggest day to day increase that we have seen there is the in spain really struggling to stem new infections as well despite their drastic lock downs and now the u.k. has joined them ordering the closure of cafes pubs and jim swire look at asia now where thailand's reported more than $809.00 new cases which is the biggest daily jump in the number of infections there so far its total is not 411 and singapore has also recorded its 1st 2 deaths from the virus i know singaporeans will be worried and anxious we must stick our rich and not give into office we have announced a series of. save distancing measures yesterday and remotes all to their society
1:03 pm
precautions to keep ourselves and our families safe we must unite to work together support one another and the look out for each other this way by staying together we will be able to prevail and overcome could be a night an interruption so coming up in the news hour we've got updates from north america from the u.k. from asia i want to start there with iran where the president says he is considering lifting coronavirus restrictions by the beginning of april remember iran one of the countries that has seen the worst of the pandemic let's talk designed us arriving now in teheran any more details on this because it sounds counter-intuitive at the moment. that's correct ever since the beginning of this outbreak for the iranian government there have been 2 major concerns the economic health of the country keeping in mind this is a country that has been debilitated financially by american sanctions for years now and the 2nd consideration has been for the government
1:04 pm
a public that has lost patience with it a public that sees it as relatively speaking unpopular so really the president here 'd trying to strike a balance between addressing this public health crisis and maintaining the economic stability of the country going forward and maintaining the social political stability remember this is a country that has lost patience with its own government over a series of crises that the country's experienced in the last few months and this is also a president who in one of his 1st appearances since the outbreak was announced in the country came on state television spoke to the iranian people and said that in his estimation the outbreak would be over in a matter of 3 days now that was weeks ago having said that the latest figures might suggest some reason for cautious optimism let me give you what the latest numbers are from the health ministry in the last 24 hours the new number of cases is 966 down from 24 hours previous and the new number of deaths is 123 down from 24 hours
1:05 pm
previous still very large numbers still striking figures in terms of the spread of this virus but this does indicate a relative downward trend that will have to wait and see what the numbers are like 24 hours from now but certainly this is a moment that government officials are using to create more optimism certainly using as a positive indicator we also heard from the health ministry that 13 provinces out of 31 in iran are indicating downward trends and in 5 provinces today there have been no new cases reported so certainly a ray of hope what we're also hearing from an interview given by a deputy health minister to local television is that despite sanctions the government feels that it has come to grips with the. spread and within 2 weeks there will be a sustained downward trend he also announce that there is testing going on for a medicine that helps patients recovery periods go down to 4 days so there are 30 cases that have been tested now another 300 will be tested with this locally
1:06 pm
developed medicine that reduces people's hospital time certainly a cause for some optimism and the deputy health minister also indicated that they have put a timeline on it that if people continue to cooperate with government health guidance and more and more iranians have been doing so that they think they can eradicate the corona virus in iran by june 20th ok interesting balance to strike there is an exam bus arriving in tehran thank you we now go to london harris rory chalons my goodness that is an eerie sight behind you rory trafalgar square on a saturday pretty much empty. and yeah have a look at that c'mon step aside just for a 2nd so you can see how it really is this as. we all know is usually one of the busiest parts of london one of the busiest capitals in the world square at the moment pretty desolate pretty empty in fact it was so empty that about an hour ago a fox ran past us here at life is ition the most people that i have seen today.
1:07 pm
are the people in long lines in queues outside the supermarkets waiting for the supermarket store open so that they can get in and buy up supply of nonperishable goods cans of things nappies parasites and all that sort of stuff panic buying that calling and the government has been speaking out about it against its. saying that we really need to think about others before we go down to the supermarket and fill our shopping trolleys with things but the lines outside the shop in the box this morning suggested that people are still going there still trying to get as much as they can the government says at the end of the week friday announced that it was going to be shutting pubs and restaurants and cafes and leisure centers and gyms except sure it was the last day of schools i was one of many parents who
1:08 pm
went down to collect their kids from school for the last time in who knows how long we don't know when they're going to be opening again this is essentially nothing short of i know you've been i transformation of the social cultural and economic life of this country all because. 19. and in on sets of all those people out there who are absolutely petrified about the the loss of their income their jobs disappearing etc the chancellor of the exchequer yesterday announce something that was pretty much unprecedented in the history of this country what amounts to essentially. private sorry nationalisation of the economic life of this country he said that the government would be stepping in and guaranteeing 80 percent of people's salaries wherever they were i mean that's an extraordinary thing this is these are extraordinary times there are people there who are saying this does not go far enough but sickly for the 5000000
1:09 pm
self-employed and freelances in the country who are not being given those same provisions at the moment they are still looking around thinking well how am i going to make money over the next however many months that this lockdown goes on very testing isn't it thank you rory chalons in london for us there in trafalgar square now china i want to look at now which as we mentioned has seen an increasing number of imported coronavirus cases it is sparking fears of perhaps a 2nd wave of infections just as the nation recovers from the initial outbreak in hong kong to view the pollen is reporting for us and says the government is stepping up its measures to stop the rise. for the longest time china had been battling the outbreak within its borders and now it's having to fight cases that are coming into the country and many of these people that are coming into the country are students or other residents who had been abroad and are facing lost sounds in other parts of the world and are returning home china has warned about
1:10 pm
this and has taken very heavy steps to try and for screening in fact that stopped allowing flights to come straight into beijing diverting many of them to smaller cities where the passengers will be screened and if they are seen as having passed the test they will then be sent to beijing and then put in quarantine centers china the government has been warning about this from the start saying that they can control what happens within their borders but what comes in from outside is the next challenge as they say the 2nd wave there have been no new domestic cases for 3 consecutive days now in china china is now considering lifting many of the heavy restriction to just place that lock down to its place to try and keep people social distancing and keep people from contracting the virus from others in the city of who bit one in the provinces who bay which was the epicenter of the virus if you recall that's where the virus was 1st detected at the end of last year there have
1:11 pm
been no new infections again and this is for another 3rd consecutive day yet stay with that who they problems the drop in new infections which is seen authorities begin to ease the strict lockdown restrictions which means people are actually not heading outside for the 1st time in weeks but in the capital beijing restrictions the opposite they're being ramped up the support from katrina use. for the 1st time in almost 2 months shelters are at a fresh food market in. new local infections reported in recent days the lockdown in the epicenter of the outbreak has eased residents can finally leave their homes and even apply to leave the province but health conditions are strict in beijing remains off limits one shin is looking forward to returning to work in the capital but expects disdain for at least another month. we can go back to.
1:12 pm
our health is the priority we absolutely have to listen to the government. with imported infections now the government's main focus is tightening restrictions historic areas popular with overseas visitors are heavily monitored by police this possibly is usually full of tourists but today as you can see it's pretty quiet and behind a barrier has been set up preventing nonresidents from entering these small streets community volunteers check entry permits and for high temperatures. in the central business district many employees have returned to work checkpoints have been set up at every commercial and residential compound new arrivals to the city are rigorously questioned airport traffic is down 80 percent but roughly 1000 people are still flying into beijing every day local incoming travelers could spark a 2nd wave of actions so i do worry about these reports it's cases some of my
1:13 pm
friends and colleagues return to china recently it's because the local cases concho beydoun is the political center is understandable that has got him stricter here now all international arrivals must be quarantined at designated hotels for 2 weeks for many in china strict measures are a small price to pay for controlling the outbreak one shit has this advice for those around the world affected by virus lockdowns. don't call trouble for your country or countries are like parents fighting for us we should have by the rules if we all go out is going to be chaotic so stay home and follow instructions. for those in who bake an evening stroll feels like a hot one treat after weeks of being forced to stay indoors nothing seems so sweet
1:14 pm
as being able to stop and smell the flowers katrina new al-jazeera beijing so let's get a little more perspective of what's happening in china i want to introduce you to our desire a cameraman peng peng who is in who by province is young count a pen you went home 2 days before the lockdown was put in place which i think was january 23 now very broad question but how are you. thank you we are ok we came back actually 2 young sheen with with a family to kiss my wife so we came back to my parents' new laws. apartment to stay with them trying to hoping to spring festival the chinese snow in their new year and then this. happened in a lockdown was announced so we got stuck here until today so what did london everyone is ok ok good good what did lockdown actually mean because it's different everywhere in the world for example you know here in qatar we are very restricted
1:15 pm
but you can still go to the supermarket if you want to you can still go to the pharmacy if you need was it a complete lockdown for you there. yes least from my experience here young shing so the highway was closed the train station was closed. community to residential community the compound i live was you know see with. all the gates were sailed off was just. you know manned by this community a war here so there were than tears so basically everybody stays at home that was that was that was a real real lockdown so nobody would be able to get out from this county so all of a whole day all the county is what pretty much implying the same lose their same arrangements and so we now hear about restrictions perhaps being lifted because
1:16 pm
there are i think for 3 straight days in who bay there have not been any new domestic infections do you have any idea what the lifting of restrictions will entailed for you. a well from you know the whole bay provisional government has a remove the deadlocked on in the region in this province except the capital city of homs so basically people can move around out of home to move around and go back to doing normal life so if you are an outsider. if you just came here and got stocked you can you can go you can go back to your own place your own provinces and to work where you but you can either go there you know buy a car you drive yourself or take you know a chartered bus you know the government arrange the bus to go there. but the activities evolving big crowds are not allowed in this country.
1:17 pm
look base to you and your family and hope things improve much love from all of us here in doha thank you. it's al jazeera cameraman painting there in the paper. now here's what else is coming up for you as we continue our coronavirus coverage we're looking at how people in france are adjusting to restrictions on movement because of the pandemic. also measures to see layoffs in industries like hospitality and travel and sport as well the spectators are missing but a stray in sport is on despite a global health emergency. so confirmed infections in the u.s. have now risen above $19000.00 cases and it does lead to some unprecedented restrictions there mike hanna has that story from washington. the trump
1:18 pm
administration continues to recha top preventative measures in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic the latest action aimed at cutting traffic across the country's northern and southern borders president trump was at pains to emphasize this was done in consultation with the governments of canada and mexico the nation's top health care officials are extremely concerned about the great public health consequences of mass uncontrolled cross border movement only u.s. citizens with fellow documents will be allowed to cross and this puts an end to any form of undocumented migration the introduction and spread of the coronavirus and the department's border patrol stations and detention facilities presents a serious danger to migrants our frontline agents and officers in the american people mexico confirmed its 1st case of coronavirus related death on wednesday against this backdrop the us president was asked about another controversy in
1:19 pm
washington reports of a merge that some lawmakers are profiting from the crisis republican chairman of the senate intelligence committee richard burr. is one of them researchers to produce 2 reports he allegedly dumped $1700000.00 worth of stocks in mid february these wishes in the travel and leisure industry one of the hardest hit economic sectors one political observer put it this way his trading is you know a significant amount of money in a very short period of time but all selling stocks that were affected by the coronavirus questions have also been asked about trades made by several other senators including the georgia senator kelly lefler who sold stock on generally the 24th the same day of a close senate health committee briefing democratic senator dianne feinstein also traded stocks in this period though she contends that was a decision taken by her financial adviser you would look at whether the senators
1:20 pm
made unusual transactions during that period or whether this was part of their normal buying in sally and if it's not doesn't amount to a significant amount of money or if it is as you said par for the course for these senators then that would suggest that they were deliberately trading on the inside information of the coming pandemic president trump says he knows nothing about these reported trades though he was quick to remark that a democrat was also apparently part of the group that conducted trades so the whole group waiting for would return for that head of the intelligence committee and it also would include senator kelly and plus lawyer and so the question is whether or not they should be investigated for that being here or also includes dianne feinstein a democrat you didn't mention her name what in your mention her name and i think she's a very honorable person by the way so i'm not but you know it's interesting you mention to people that you don't mention one that happens to be a democrat or a senator should they fire you now because they have to look at it possibly but i
1:21 pm
find them to be honorable people the matter will now be referred to the senate ethics committee which will decide whether these trades constituted unethical if not criminal behavior. mike hanna washington away from the politics more u.s. states are establishing a president at lockdown rules telling tens of millions america of americans to stay at home new york illinois connecticut they've all followed california in rolling out sweeping measures to combat the spread of coronavirus that means all but essential businesses will be closed and that people should only leave home for trips to supermarkets pharmacies actual stations this may be a reality for you now a new reality of having to stay at home a whole lot more and we appreciate how difficult that can be so we want to talk about it and we'll do that with underwrites campus who is a social psychologist and neuroscientist also a lecturer in the department of psychology at the university of london address thank you for joining us i feel like it's
1:22 pm
a step by step process and maybe the 1st step for people is just having to get over the idea that this is just how it is now there isn't a lot you can do about it and you need to almost get over that psychological hump before thinking about anything anything else. yes it's a it's a great observation i think we are crazy kind of like oh a feeling of control of our lives that we all have to give up but i think for some people have might actually kind of be expressed in a very. well off in a not in a good way such that they are trying to get the control back over that i've learned think the best way to do it is to consume to verge more about to coronavirus to consume a lot of news to try to kind of make up for it as a feeling of control that is illusion of control of watching t.v. watching the news checking twitter or seeing what's going on on facebook kind of trying to get this feeling back and at my feet down into the very about what is going to happen i think one of the things we should realize is that more
1:23 pm
information more watching t.v. more news is not a solution if you catch yourself being overly concerned with the situation you might want to kind of restrict your media consumption and that's their way of approaching yeah not a bad time to put the phone down isn't it tell me about the links also between physical and mental health i think a lot of people will be worrying about physical health and thinking i need to try to keep fit. but that presumably can tie in and help with people's mental health. yes i think it's a greater separation just kind of in general if you look at what makes people how the physical act it would keep us happy with keeps us productive physical activity is a very good point i think even more. important our social interactions i think we really underestimate if you're socially isolated at home you really underestimate how important monday interactions in our lives how much to keep us happy so just like normally rethink about oh i can do without the conversation of the grocery shop or
1:24 pm
talking tomorrow colleague of coffee machine but is really conscious of huge to our well being so it's important to kind of keep in mind and allow yourself to have muttley and interactions with your relatives and your family as you might sometimes feel well why should i call my mother just to tell her that basically nothing happens i should call or bitch should give yourself the permission to come home on a very boring conversations of others because they're going to contribute to our feeling of happiness and of being connected to others i think calling your mom is always good advice one thing which is different in the situation we have now is that it is open ended his and it often if you know maybe us a little you've had an accident you broke your leg you know you're going to be at home for 4 weeks or 6 weeks here none of us actually know do you have any recommendations for again getting over that because i think that's where a lot of desperation comes from thinking oh my god how long is this going to go on
1:25 pm
. yeah and i think it's like this also in some wish like it's a natural response right if you're you're in a situation that everyone towns are busy of your is important that restricts your live but they can't really challenge much they're very different sources of information trying to different things i think the biggest advice i can give here is just to kind of find something in your life that you might focus on and stuff so i just added when i was an article in trying to do some shopping i saw a lot of people rushing to do d.i.y. store through the hardware stores sort of gardening centers and i think that's a very good idea to kind of said ok i get this sense of control get a sense of achievement back into your life having a little project but trying to improve your gotten by trying to improve your flat or maybe just learning a new language that gives you this feeling back to joy and control if you can achieve things and then it might also get you away from being preoccupied with the
1:26 pm
uncertainty of the situation so instead of kind of trying to focus on it so you're not what you're supposed to do there's nothing else you can do let's leave that let's focus on something else that can give me some feeling of control and joy in achievement award. and that's happens thank you for your time great advice and i'm sure our audience appreciates it as well thank you thank you. ok let's move on now to south africa where the number of people infected with corona virus has risen sharply to 202 the country's health care system is already struggling people who are in the pandemic could in fact overwhelm it entirely i'm going to militarize a report now from johannesburg. doctors detected the 1st case of covert 1000 in south africa earlier this month over the past 2 weeks more than 150 people have been treated for the virus as the government tries to contain the outbreak many are worried 28 year old stepson quater is one of the $7000000.00 south
1:27 pm
africans with hiv he says with an already compromised immune system his priority is to keep safe it feels like it's another. reload of a sort their reaction be really ill evolute and something that is got a lot of fear and words people living with hiv ripples in their denial of seeing what if they get infected what's going to happen why don't you since that's what's the next steps millions like to pull have no option but to use often overcrowded public transport while private taxi operators have promised to disinfect and provide hand sanitizer many have been slow to implement the new guidelines public hospitals and clinics are normally crowded with people waiting for hours to see a doctor they are concerned the corona virus could easily spread when you come to our part of the world our public health care systems are broken our intensive care
1:28 pm
units are full even before we get to covert 19 so again there's a real danger and this is why i think we need international support for africa we need a mobilization of resources poor water and sanitation infrastructure in parts of south africa mean that many may not be able to wash their hands as often as they should increasing the risk of contracting 1000 in upmarket suburbs like this one homes in spaces a large states a wide it's easier for people to keep apart but for millions of others the reality is quite different. thousands of townships across south africa overcrowded dozens of families share one toilet streets aligned with rubbish and people have little if any space to themselves the government is using t.v. radio and the internet to spread awareness as quickly as possible and as promised quarantine spaces for people who don't have their own it's closed schools and
1:29 pm
banned gatherings of more than 100 people compared to europe and asia african countries have fewer reported cases of the virus but some experts worry that poorly equipped public health systems are failing to spot the true total and warn the continent should prepare for the worst for me al-jazeera johannesburg south africa while we're focusing on africa it's a good chance to just bring up the johns hopkins virus tracker which were used quite often and when you look at africa there are. fewer red dots there out there in fact all suman and just look at south africa 1st of all saying is that's where meter was and if i press the button they were looking at as we say 2 or 2 cases and 0 debts and as you go further up i mean the numbers stay quite low congar 18 kenya 7 it's only really when you get up into say north africa you're looking at places like egypt with 295 or algeria with 90 but comparatively compared to the rest of
1:30 pm
the world yes the numbers are low but that shouldn't mean people are complacent the world health organization is urging countries in africa to wake up and have a possible spike in cases. we have seen how the virus actually accelerates at after a certain tipping tipping point so the best advice for africa is to prepare for the worst and prepare to do virus really speeds up and accelerates in the. continents or countries so that's our advise and i think africa should wake up my continent should wake up very pleased to have dr goes it on there with us now an associate fellow in the global health program at chatham house on skype from dubai today hello dr nice to have you with us. general do you agree with the head of the w.h.o. there saying that africa needs to wake up about coronavirus i would say that from
1:31 pm
my perspective africa has already well enough we've seen in the past week that there has been a lot of different interventions and wanted to slow down the import of cases in many african countries countries are closing their their land borders they're stepping in lives from infected countries that are already have community transmission and have also really been increasing the communications around distantly and as well as hand washing as well ok i wonder if actually passed lessons have been learnt in boulder was obviously such a huge issue for parts of africa what is it now 56 years ago 7 years ago and maybe that that was. a good place to start in primal urge. i think he really did have a legacy as far as prepared news for african countries so one we have the evil infrastructure that we can still hold off so it's much easier now than it was in
1:32 pm
say before 2004 to ensure that the airports are screening passengers the airports have hat is now doing that also there are vehicles of communicating with communities much they're much more accessible now so for example the national public health institutes in the ministries of pell they have when they should ships with radio stations with t.v. stations they have much more effective communication organizations within their institutes institutes so we actually do have a good message to build off about. what about health facilities themselves i know it will vary from country to country of course but broadly speaking one of the concerns is that the health facilities won't be able to keep up if there is a big outbreak and that is the fact i think that is the scariest part of coronavirus when we think of africa think of any low income a resource constrained country so south africa and probably uganda has the most
1:33 pm
doctors or population and that's just one doctor for a 1000. people and that's a lot that is already overwhelming just for the health care workforce and then when you think of intensive care units you think of hospital beds we also have a critical shortage across the continent as well so really the efforts right now need to be focused on containment really identifying those important cases looking at the context of those cases and making sure that there are quine 1000 or so you know some warning quarantine or if there is an isolation you know as a lady member estimates possible and really trying to contain this as much as possible doctor goes here we really appreciate your time and your your advice there thank you for joining us thank you. we're going to take a quick look at the weather now with richard news of a change to colder weather across parts of europe yes that's right kamau coronavirus free part of the program there's no establish a link thankfully so we stick to assure weather elements of the moment and we look
1:34 pm
at the weather i'm seeing this cold front come down from the north and it's really producing a significant change in weather across many parts of europe this shot was taken in the english garden in munich in germany on friday temperatures that 19 degrees very nice indeed the temperature dropping significantly over the next few days not because of this line a cloud doesn't look much but it's a cold front does what it says it is bring colder air base the air which is come all the way from polar climes behind it the be an area of high pressure so fine conditions behind it but ahead of it significant drop of temperature is expected so let me put the temperatures on the map look at bucharest they're $22.00 degrees celsius to the term the forecast for 24 hours is down to 8 you're going to see something similar in belgrade in serbia as well so we just got the oranges and yellows high on across parts of italy stage but even there is a move the forecast on another 24 hours in says gone so we're looking at temperatures very much so average and below average across the whole of europe
1:35 pm
stage and then the government back to today we've got this front giving some outbreaks of rain across parts of central europe but also want to mention is looking pretty unsettled across more southwest narrows down across siberian potential so we're going to see some pretty unsettled weather here no. richard thank you for that as richard says the weather and just the weather there we will continue our coverage there of coronavirus off the break it's already been through a cholera epidemic and now the poorest country in the americas hated having to confront the coronavirus. and sport one of america's biggest names in sport has found a new take and he will have that story a little later. certainly al-jazeera london broke. 2 special guests in conversation people think that racism is having personal vitriol towards black people and there's no understanding of
1:36 pm
what systemic racism is unprompted uninterrupted success comes with the position if you're not upsetting people you know the same thing needs ennio. there is not a family in britain i believe that has not been touched by empire studio be unscripted on al-jazeera join the global conversation off the bubble be able to expand their brains maybe have a different view this is a dialogue women in cambodia are in fact telling their here we don't know how much they're getting paid for it it's hard to track it's hard to treat everyone has a voice tell us what you think and your conversation could be a law right here in this case we need to step away from gaming people are not necessarily game perfect this is a journey of progression not perfection on al-jazeera.
1:37 pm
they're on the news on here at al-jazeera with continuing coverage of the corona virus pandemic. that and says he is considering lifting restrictions by the beginning of april iran though one of the countries that has seen the worst of the pandemic china's reported 41 new infections in people returning from overseas i mean the number of imported cases as we would call it is now 269 that rise sparking fears of maybe a 2nd wave of infections just as china starts to recover from the initial outbreak . in the united states and mexico began restricting non-essential travel across their shared border to contain the spread of corona virus that is after a similar agreement between the u.s. and canada. for every death from corona virus there are many more people who have
1:38 pm
recovered let's not forget that we've spoken to one such patient in iran who says contract in the illness was a traumatic experience and i look for those analysts who could also say about 3 weeks ago i had shortness of breath i couldn't breathe i just thought it was because of a cold i even visited a doctor who said it was nothing important and prescribe some simple medicine as shortness of breath continued i visited a doctor on march 2nd and he noticed that my blood oxygen level was much lower than normal he sent me to a hospital emergency situation i was examined and had a chest x. ray then and the lab after i was tested they looked to be afraid of me i was told that i was probably tested positive is all you can feel your of course i was fearful it was a strange fear for me i am an optimistic person in general the feeling went out into the hospital 16 way patients were waiting to be divided into rooms anxiety was running high in the ear some were coughing strangely some were screaming when you suddenly faced something that you've heard about much in the news and the fight
1:39 pm
news on social media that creates fear inside you then you feel all you hoped for and thought about suddenly are raised to the ground. to australia now where one of the country's most famous beaches has been closed off the people ignored a ban on mass gatherings large crowds was seen at sydney's bondi beach on friday despite a government ban on gatherings of more than $500.00 people the sorts of images sparking widespread anger across australia authorities say the closure will extend to other beaches if social distancing advice continues to be ignored. we're going to stay in australia until keiran joins now a conference producer recently hired for a job in new york city but then he came back to australia and was suddenly let go due to the economic impact kiran thanks for joining us you know that's a very broad. explanation of your situation that i've given they can you give us a little more detail on what's happened. they could have been clearer we're going to try and so i'm basically excited to start my last new york and i
1:40 pm
