the coronavirus. acts of kindness we'll take a look at how volunteers are helping people cope with the stress of the corona far . less secure live now to the white house where president donald trump is giving an update on the coronavirus situation ill and very little meeting he said and from the financial this is a medical situation not a financial situation financial those are moving along very nicely i want to thank you for being here and update you on the progress we've made after a week of extraordinary mobilization in a war against a virus governors mayors the businesses charities and citizens are all working with their jency and speed toward one coming goal which is saving american lives. we're in communication with. foreign countries it's now at 148 foreign countries can you believe that 100 you talk about
8:02 pm
a spread you talk about a violence spread 148 countries not even believable there's been a week of national action and of great national solidarity people are getting along with getting along. with the. republicans and democrats and independents and liberals and conservatives and actually it's a very nice thing to say we're all one beautiful big american family and that's taking place right now last night approved a major disaster declaration for the state of new york that worked very closely with governor cuomo and it is the 1st time in our nation's history that a presence use the stafford act to declare a major disaster in response to a public health crisis never happened before and considering other areas where we
8:03 pm
may or may not be doing that and i'm working very closely with gavin newsom the governor of california and others and we may be doing the same thing depending on their needs filling a what they're asking for it's been unprecedented action in new york and we've had a tremendous federal response all over the country and i want to thank all the people in the federal government and obviously in the state governments and local governments we are working hard everybody is working hard and the people standing alongside of me a working very hard that i can tell you. we've also reached agreements with canada and mexico on new travel rules at our northern and southern borders to halt the entry of the chinese virus well continuing trade and commerce. and we've had very good talks safe with prime minister today and today this morning
8:04 pm
with president lopez obrador and we talked about joint measures that were taken to prevent the spread of the virus in our countries and to temporarily suspend nonessential travel. we had a great conversation this morning the president of mexico and our close cooperation with mexico and canada will keep our people healthy keep their people healthy keep everybody safe yesterday i had a call with 12000 small businesses representatives of these businesses that's the engine of our country people don't realize that you know you read all about the big ones but the the small business when you have them up together is really the engine economic engine of our country and i assure them that my administration is doing everything within its very considerable considerable power frankly to support them and their employees nobody's ever done what we've done likewise i had calls during
8:05 pm
the week with. all sorts of representatives and systems like the hospital system we spoke to many of the hospital systems throughout the country nurses and doctors representatives representing hundreds of thousands of nurses and doctors airlines and cruise ship companies. the business roundtable which was fully attended and it's all of the top c.e.o.'s of of our country and beyond frankly the businessmen of. really these a world a world styled business ben these are businessmen that control the biggest companies in the world many of them have taken hits and many of them are just you know going forward that they've that have businesses have been have been great some of been very badly affected some haven't been affected at all and frankly some are doing very well they continue to do very well it's wal-mart as an example has been really helpful to us doug mcmillan that of wal-mart really helpful to us and i
8:06 pm
guess a assume that doing pretty well because we built a certainly by and by much more than even a clip at christmas by substantial numbers pretty amazing but they're doing incredibly they put on tremendous extra staff you don't have empty shelves lot of things that happen that are very good restaurants fast food executives grocery stores all retailers literally all of them. in groups and we spoke with the g 7 leaders at length as you know probably know about that. spoke to many of the governors spoke to almost all of the governors of conference calls and many of the governors individually. and very importantly very religious leaders we had a great conversation yesterday the vice president and myself with the religious leaders of of our country many of the religious leaders and we've had a number of them during the course of the last 2 weeks actually but yesterday we
8:07 pm
had a very. very significant call with the religious leaders of our country i signed legislation providing american workers with paid sick leave unpaid family medical leave at no cost to employers and free testing for those who need it the testing is going very well and the admiral will speak to that along with tony. we're working quickly to pass additional legislation that will provide massive relief to small businesses and affected industries and give direct payments to our great workers and hardworking american families is never been anything like we're doing on the hill right now they're negotiating mitch mcconnell chuck schumer. they're all up there kevin mccarthy and nancy pelosi they're all they go shooting and everybody's working hard and they want to get to a solution that's the right solution i think we're getting very close. we've also
8:08 pm
announced that we've moved tax day from april 15th of july 15th which is a big deal giving businesses and individuals extra time to file and pay without interest or penalty so we move the date way back and so it'll be july 15th and stead of your traditional april 15th and very importantly. you will have a lot of time but you're not going to have interest penalties or any kind of penalties by filing at that later date heard announced that foreclosures and evictions are suspended for single family home owners with f.h.a. insured mortgages for the next 60 days and. a great head of hud lives with us today ben carson is going to say viewers in a moment the department of education will not enforce standardized testing which is another big deal requirements for students in elementary through high school for the current school year not fair to do that so we will waiving that i mean for i
8:09 pm
would imagine it's probably the 1st time ever that's been waived but i think it's only fair to the students and to the parents of this that it is also waiving interest and other things that we're discussing right now on federally held student loans and directed that borrowers be allowed to suspend their student loan payments without penalty for at least 60 days and we'll be talking about student loans that the students there are under a great burden right now so we will be talking about that further but we're we're waiving during this 60 day period various elements and very important elements on student loans big subject i signed an executive order invoking the defense production act as you all know giving us powerful new authorities to help states cities and hospitals with your needed supplies. there's been a clear call to action to the private sector and the call is made right here it's
8:10 pm
been really pretty amazing what's happened with the private sector they are really in 6th gear i think which is responded in full force helping to produce and supply much needed masks swabs sanitizes ventilators and everything else there is. is a move on that's incredible right now and by way of example haynes everybody knows haynes great company great consumer cotton products company is retrofitting its manufacturing capabilities in large sections of their plants to produce masks and they're in that process right now. that in my direction the f.d.a. has taken rapid steps to make these items available for medical use right now in most exciting lee to me is what the f.d.a. has done in order to get. possibly a very successful number it's not just one or 2 number of.
8:11 pm
therapeutics medicines that can help help people that are already sick help people not get sick and obviously you know about the vaccine and tony will discuss that over the later but the vaccine is moving along but this is something that right now for right down like this is what we really it's incredible and what the f.d.a. has done. and dr steven non-news highly respected came as a just a highly respected man he's been fantastic he's only been here for a couple of months and nice he's gotten thrown into the swim of it and he's really standing up but the f.d.a. has really moved mountains i said of this morning that move mountains to get approvals on things that. that maybe work we'll find out very soon we'll take along an example of the pair no record which is this is really an example where we're repurpose ing alcohol they went out and repurpose their alcohol
8:12 pm
production capabilities in arkansas off kentucky texas and west virginia to make hand sanitizer. that's a big difference and they've been unbelievable they really have a pro record. their 1st delivery will be on tuesday it's going to go to various states they're going to start i think in new york and they're going to work their way around they make in a tremendous amount of hand sanitizer in a very high level too by the way we've activated the national response coordination center to level one the g.i.'s level. is the nerve center of all of our government response to crisis and it's coordinated very closely with our nation's governors our nation's governors many of you are at the call yesterday with the governors and . i think you can see the relationship and we've had numerous calls with governors
8:13 pm
by the way but the relationships. are pretty amazing they're like they're loving what we're doing and the the coordination between the federal government and the governors states and even local has been pretty incredible fame administrator pete gaynor who is with us will soon be providing you with an update on the center's operations and fame has been incredible we got them involved last week very much involved and now they are involved nationwide we've dramatically expanded tele health so americans can see a doctor without leaving home something which more and more people are using and now they're really using it and now the ones that are using it are loving it and i think we're going to change the way our country functions medically and probably in other ways because of what's going on right now this will reduce the chance of infection and preserve hospital capacity so it solves a lot of problems every american has a role to play in defending our nation from this invisible horrible enemy.
8:14 pm
it really is it's an invisible enemy and we will be successful very successful hopefully very much sooner than people would even think so we say stay at home and save lives there's a time of shared national sacrifice but it's also a time to treasure our loved ones and to take stock of what is most important our faith our families our neighbors and our great country and i want to thank all of the incredible people of our country the citizens of our country that what you've done and the way you're responding has just been a very special something that we will never forget that the history books will never forget that we're going to have a great victory we're going to be celebrating a great victory in the not too distant future and i just want to thank everybody analysis i'll introduce. our vice president mike pence who's led the task force
8:15 pm
and i will tell you this he has not slept much maybe a tiny bit maybe a little bit but not much and he's done an incredible job mike thank you please. good afternoon off. and thank you mr president. the white house coronavirus task force met today we briefed president on our latest recommendations we continue at the president's direction and to lead not a whole of government approach but a whole of america approach and you just heard the president describe one inspiring story after another of the way the american people are responding the way american businesses are responding religious communities across this country and the
8:16 pm
american people are coming together they're responding with commonsense compassion and generosity people are heeding the advice of state and local authorities 'd and tens of millions of americans are putting into practice 15 days to slow the spread . we are we are officially mr president 6 days into our 15 days and as we look all across this country. while we we strongly support the decisions the governors in states where we have significant outbreak of taken we encourage every american to listen to the state and local authorities for every american this is what you can do to make a difference. over the next week and a few days to protect your health protect your family so but most especially slow the spread and the potential for the coronavirus to impact the most vulnerable as the president said we we've been we've almost been overwhelmed at the outpouring of
8:17 pm
support from american businesses the president spoke yesterday to thousands of small businesses we spoke to manufacturers yesterday and in fact as the president indicated the f.d.a. in record time just approved one manufacturer of the reproducing millions of surgical masks in a matter of weeks for the american people the pastors we spoke to. we we want to thank all the religious leaders from every community of faith in the country making the hard choice to suspend services to have online services even while those ministries are continuing to support food banks and come alongside of the most vulnerable and of course the chorus of prayers that is coming up from communities of faith around the country is making the difference that it always has and the life of this nation one thing the president and i promise was to remind people that
8:18 pm
on the the weekends that you're not in the pews it's still a good. it's still a good idea to if you can to go ahead and make that donation you did because all the ministries are continuing to play a vital role in our communities and we encourage your continued support the president and i are grateful that the american people are listening to state and local authorities and and putting into practice all of all of the recommendations of the president's coronavirus guidelines. and as you will hear in just a few moments from admiral go off. testing is expanding rapidly across the united states of america state run drive through is our expanding across the country and as you will hear details this morning now more than 195000 americans and more who have been symptomatic have been tested that number does not include county hospitals for. or health care labs around the nation some 15000 in
8:19 pm
number and among the number of the more than 195000 that have been tested it's important to remember that only 1900003 $143.00 at this moment have tested positive for the year watching our desire it is 17 or 18 e.g. am tool that is the u.s. vice president mike payne say giving on some details about the current situation all one count trying to tackle coronavirus in the united states talking about the procedure. there is that people going through in order to be able to protect themselves from the virus and also saying that testing is expanding rapidly in the us just a few moments ago president donald trump said that the priority was saving american lives he talked about it having been a week of not national solidarity he described it as one big beautiful american family who said that he had reached agreements with canada and mexico on the border
8:20 pm
controls he did again refer to the corona virus as the chinese virus but he then went on to talk about the procedures and the raft of financial changes that are going to be brought into place to support the economy as well as support employees who have to stay home because of the virus as well as medical teams you've also talked quite a bit about some of the companies that have been retooling their facilities to start providing medical supplies and in one case hand sanitizer. ok before we move on let me just bring you a bit of breaking news out of italy officials there reported a record number of deaths in the past 24 hours 793 people have been killed by the virus in the past 24 hours that's bringing the total number of deaths there so far to $4825.00 john holl is joining us on skype
8:21 pm
from london jonah this latest update in these figures is going to be very you know worrying of course in italy but across europe as a whole. i solute i think that's very true horrifying these numbers they just seem to get bigger and bigger there was a point you only heard of the week when the heart of the numbers are really around the 450 market where dad and i think on tuesday or wednesday slightly abuse that well that's good news perhaps the beginning of the new downward trend will anything but that has happened a brand new record being set as you say 793 get in the past 24 hours in italy the vast majority of them in northern italy think about the fact that in wu having china at the height of the epidemic there earlier this year the biggest single day number of fatalities was 150 gives you a sense of the scale that italy is dealing with here other european countries as
8:22 pm
you say will be watching closely there 2 weeks now in italy into very restrictive measures restrictions on freedom of movement people staying indoors their meting social contact only essential journeys out of their homes to buy things like essentials from the shops and so on but 2 weeks in those measures are not having an effect of what scientists and specialists will tell you is that when it comes to a point when the. health care systems in a country become so overwhelmed that they can no longer cope with that is where this virus is going to be if it stephanie is that is when things are going to get exponentially worse and i think this is a sign in a sense of just how overwhelmed hospitals and healthcare services are in the north of italy particularly the government desperately worried of course that all of this spreads to the south the north of the country relatively affluent it's over land the financial capital of italy the southern parts of the country far less up with
8:23 pm
them but century far more vulnerable that is where i think the fear of the government will be photos now are drawn as i mentioned you're talking to us from london and of course we're 24 hours into new tougher restrictions which have been brought into place in the u.k. how are people coping there. as you say midnight last night these very tough restrictions announced by the government here britain finally sort of catching up with the sorts of quality and restrictive measures being policed but it's also that if you are all tasked out in a just and attentive sector for the shutdown of pubs bars restaurants clubs chimneys it was this is some of our people coping well so that anecdotally if you take a look at the big landmarks it places like london there are far far fewer fewer people that i'm home with my family so those are pretty much everyone i know and this is what the future looks like for an indefinite period of time the big question is how sustainable course is all of this as britain looks just passing that perhaps about
8:24 pm
2 days down the road towards its massive escalation in numbers which is anticipated to watch the peak perhaps in 2 or 3 months time can people live like this these are stripped of much for all of their time are interesting to know in italy with all that's going on there the government is pleading with people today to observe all of these measures the sense that people are simply looking at the situation going nothing used sorting this out nothing is stopping this we can't venture out a bit what what what harm can i do what i look the answer is an enormous amount of harm and a big worry for all governments and it will be the sustainability of these quality measures china for now thank you very much indeed a lot don isn't too news here as in places people can only leave their homes for essential things mosques cafes and restaurants have all been shut in the borders of close

a 72 year old woman became the 1st victim of the virus once and died on thursday. it's important to remind ourselves that the vast majority of people who contract covered 19 do recover we spoke to one such patient in iran who says getting sick was a traumatic experience and over the cell and also about 3 weeks ago i had shortness of breath i couldn't breathe i just thought it was because of a cold i even visited a doctor who said it was nothing important and prescribe some simple medicine as shortness of breath continued i visited a doctor on march 2nd and he noticed that my blood oxygen level was much lower than normal he sent me to a hospital emergency situation i was examined and had achieved x. ray then in the lead after i was tested they looked to be afraid of me i was told that i was probably tested positive is all you can feel your of course i was fearful it was a strange fear for me i am an optimistic person in general the feeling when i
8:26 pm
entered the hospital 16 where patients were waiting to be divided into rooms anxiety was running high in the ear some were coughing strangely some were screaming when you suddenly faced something that you've heard about much in the news and the fake news on social media that creates fear inside you then you feel all you hoped for and thought about suddenly are raised to the ground al-jazeera has spoken to a doctor in southern italy who has tested positive for the virus resetting spina is in them all or just who was working in the only hospital in his area when his wife became unwell his tongue military rule is now on lockdown the local hospitals been closed and he's in quarantine it's thought all the cases are linked to a school in the area but some of the accused doctors spinner are spreading the illness here's this story. no you got to know my town moliterno in the basilica region has a cluster of corona virus cases there are not many towns in the south like militant which is in total lockdown there's no movement allowed looks like life is being
8:27 pm
extinguished here it's like a ghost town there's no one outside apart from a few people at the pharmacy or the local grocery store and. in the days before my wife contracted the virus a few people visited the house friends and colleagues and people who've been tasted you know with my wife it happened all of a sudden she was healthy and then suddenly came down with a favor in a heavy dry cough it was violent and very strong and what really caught my attention was that her oxygen levels dropped dramatically on top of that is the other symptoms the lung obstruction persistent shaking and coughing tightness and intense migraine will let if you'll die the difficulty in the south of italy is that there's not enough tastes you're only a few tests available every day in the entire region but more importantly it's absurd how difficult it is to find protective equipment like the face masks in gallons necessary to fight covert 19 and end up missing when i treated my wife at 1st i wasn't wearing protective gear because she had
8:28 pm
a small fever so i didn't think she had covered one thing so that's how i caught the virus as well i'd been taking consultations in the hospital and various departments while i was positive but i didn't know it and so the hospital's closed down temporarily to clean and sanitizing entire compound you know my colleagues were tested not just the doctors but also the paramedics and the nurses. from a human point of view 19 has been devastated because my wife was the 1st confirmed case in the whole basilica region it's unleashed an incredible wast next door on me related to the gossip those who thought that i was the one who brought this virus to our area but covered 19 is a global pandemic it doesn't respect borders doesn't follow rules the. has reached all corners of the globe in some way i do feel guilty guilty for having a germ even though i don't have any symptoms and even though i'm living with it my life continues normally except i've lost
8:29 pm
a bit of appetite makes one understand just how incredibly dangerous this virus can be for a human body if you don't have a strong immune system to fight it this virus will inflict heavy damage and that's why there of being thousands of deaths in our country. challenging times can bring out the best in people and iran the world volunteers are trying to help those on the front lines of the pandemic they have a home and reports on how the crisis is inspiring acts of kindness as the world comes to terms with an outbreak they hoped would never come authorities are trying to figure out how to best protect health care workers during a time when they're needed most. covert 19 has the 2 a shortage of supplies and medical staff say they're running out of testing kits and protective gear needed to help patients it could be some combination of we don't have enough shields but we have enough masks so we don't have enough mass but we have enough shields it's prompted online uses to help jeffrey zines factory has
8:30 pm
started producing 2000000 facemasks a day for medical staff in new york his next challenge he tweets will be distribution. panic buying has there to empty shelves in some places fears are growing there isn't enough food to go around. grocery stores are lending a helping hand by designating specific hours to senior citizens and disabled customers to shop and volunteers are stepping in to assist the elderly people are able to submit requests online for grocery delivery pharmaceutical deliveries whatever it is that they need from outside if they don't want to go out and we send a volunteer to pick it up for them we make sure to minimize physical contact so all money is slid under the door the groceries are left outside that concern echoes across borders this restaurant in berlin closed a few days ago but the chef and stoffel working to prepare dishes for nearby hospitals. and we thought people will work for 18 hours and sleep on their desks or in the waiting room how they be taken care of how can we make sure they eat well

and stay healthy and then max said hey i can't do much but i can cook while schools and shut in georgia are in the united states bus drivers austin on juicy ensuring children get a hot meal while parents are at work our main focus is to see that the children are bad no matter who they are. and musicians have set up washing stations to protect the homeless we're out here doing our part to ensure that people have access to this basic necessity for this family and. for many who are in self isolation there's a need to keep spirits up with song. we still gonna or a message of appreciation to those during the crisis to our health care workers we salute you. it's

unclear how long this global pandemic will last but human connection and the kindness of neighbors goes a long way. al-jazeera. some of the headlines on italy has just recorded its biggest single day death toll since the corona virus pandemic began 793 people have died from the illness in the past 24 hours most of the dead or in the worst hit region of lone birdie in the north president somebody is current owner of virus taskforce a holding their daily news briefing at the white house like the 1195000 people have been tested for the virus across the nation. and those are the headlines coming up next a knowledge of its inside story. maintaining
