9:00 pm
a in their rooms a 1000000 japanese shun the outside world 101 east investigates why so many young men all feel lost in japan on al-jazeera. this is al jazeera. hello i'm rob matheson and this is the news our live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes in italy yet another large spike in coronavirus deaths 793 killed the single highest daily death toll as health care workers struggle to keep up. the u.s. president donald trump says testing has been ramped up across the country more than 200000 americans have been checked. and u.k.
9:01 pm
government joins forces with retailers to try to prevent panic buying from grocery stores as the nation is effectively on lockdown to slow the spread of the virus. jobs lost supermarkets shot flights grounded economies around the world of badly hit by the pandemic and trying to prevent a total financial collapse. acts of kindness we'll take a look at how volunteers are helping people cope during the outbreak. almost 1000000000 people are not confined to their homes around the world as the coronavirus pandemic tightens its grip that have now been 12000 confirmed killed globally and it's italy which continues to bear the heaviest burden its death toll has jumped by nearly $800.00 a record for
9:02 pm
a single day most were in the northern region of lumber deal with the armies transporting victims out of the hardest hit areas a cemeteries are overloaded and national death toll is now approaching 5000 meanwhile in the u.s. new jersey has followed 4 other states and told people to stay home close to 200000 people have tested nationwide vice president mike pence will also be screened after one of his stuff contract of the illness. neither the president nor i had direct contact with that staff person we worked immediately with a white house physician and the c.d.c. we've done all contact tracing and all the white house doctors indicated that is no reason to believe that i was exposed and no need to be tested. given the unique position that i have as vice president and as leader of the white house coronavirus task force both i and my wife will be tested for the corona virus later this afternoon. and in the u.k.
9:03 pm
the government is urging people to stop panic buying to avoid scenes like this one supermarkets stripped of essential items well john hall is joining us on skype from london jonah 1st of all let's talk about those numbers in italy this is again another severe spike in these numbers this is going to be concerning obviously in italy but across europe as a whole. these numbers are extraordinary now rob there's no doubt about that 793 new guests recorded in italy in the last 24 hours 672 in the 24 hour period before that is really setting all the worst kinds of records every day now the highest single day death toll of this in the entire duration of this crisis cast your mind back to the situation in woodland in china at the beginning of the year the worst single day death toll there was $150.00 that gives you some idea of the scale of the crisis that you faced by italy and by italy's health care
9:04 pm
services at present that as a say those numbers keep going up now one interesting point to bear in mind is that restrictive measures in italy have been in place now for around 2 weeks with no apparent psion of success not the scientific community broadly seems to think that once you put these communities and societies and publics into lockdown like this you're looking at a sort of lag time of $2.00 to $3.00 weeks before any noticeable effect takes place at the transmission rate it may well be that it's louis is on the cusp or approaching the cusp of change will may well have another week to go rising numbers nobody can be absolutely sure the problem is communicating this idea to the public and ensuring they understand it ensuring that they are willing and understand why they have to maintain these restrictive measures until the point of change arrives
9:05 pm
and that's clearly a big issue of concern in italy now after 2 weeks of government concern that some people are beginning to relax a little bit on their quarantine measures looking at the spiraling get top hats wondering what on earth is the point of saying cooped up in our apartments like this where the government the health minister essentially begging italians to continue to monitor the rules and that if it is legal that of course all of these deaths the majority of them some 2 thirds taking place in the north of the. relatively affluent over $2000000.00 the financial capital of them to the fabric industry a lot of manufacturing up there that they fear will be that these numbers transplant themselves from the north to the far less affluent south where the health care system is even less able to cope that it is in the north joining you're talking to us from london and of course in the u.k. there have been tougher restrictions which have been introduced there how are people coping. these restrictions come into play at midnight on friday britain finally appearing to catch up with the trend elsewhere in europe
9:06 pm
cosy restaurants of other places amassed gathering social and to tell human hospitality industry places and so on it's clearly having an effect on saturday out of that you can see from pictures of it landmark places in london streets very empty far fewer people at that. anecdotally there are some businesses who have been closed you want as you go see the point in closing the police at this point of not being full of it is that not a legal way and that will be a problem the government is looking at now having very reluctantly taken these notions to age on people's rights and freedoms to be to move on and enjoy and enjoy the basic liberties of life may now have to look at actual legal measures to get police the right and ability to force these closures i think really days now that britain trying to get to grips with a very very substantially different way of life not alone far from alone doing that . and journal reporting for us live from london thanks very much indeed jonah i
9:07 pm
want to bring in john hendren who's joining us live from chicago let's talk about the press conference of the president's coronavirus task force that we were reporting on just a few minutes ago the president speaking there and also vice president mike pence what would the takeaways that you took from that. ok we appear to have lost the son and to john who's in lockdown in his home in illinois i will try and get him back later on but in the meantime. in fact i'm told that we can now return to john john i don't know if you can hear me. now but we weren't able to hear you before but hopefully we can just give us a quick up some what you think were the main points to take away from that conference that's been going on at the white. well it wasn't
9:08 pm
a massively musique day in the administration but they did talk about the things that they have been doing lately one of them is to move tax day from april 15th to july 15th i believe it is in the reason for that is debt they want people to be able to have more money for longer and to not have to worry about that while they are on lockdown but the real big thing going on right now is negotiations on capitol hill there isn't nearly 2 trillion dollar bill it's actually $1.00 trillion plus about $500000000000.00 in loans it's being negotiated in the congress and the way it is right now under the senate bill if you're a major corporation like mcdonald's or an airline you're likely to get direct assistance the airlines are asking for about $50000000000.00 boeing the aircraft maker here in the u.s. is asking for about $60000000000.00 and the government is looking at actually giving them that if you're a small business they're looking at giving loans that would have to be paid back
9:09 pm
but if you're an individual you'd be much better off in the u.k. where they're giving massive benefits caymans to individuals here in the u.s. the payments go up to about $1200.00 for people earning $75000.00 a year that'll bring you up to about the poverty level here in the u.s. so not a generous program democrats in congress republicans control the senate democrats control the house democrats want more of those benefits to go to the individuals and less to the corporations and there are concerns that the corporations would do what they did in the financial crisis of 2008 and $9.00 and that is buy back their own stock to drive up the value and pay their executives big bonuses the democrats want strings in there that say they cannot do that other than that we learned that mike pence and his wife are going to be tested later today and the president has already been tested that is after a white house staffer was tested positive for the corona virus and pence said that
9:10 pm
he neither he nor the president had direct contact with that individual but apparently out of an abundance of caution they did those tests. john hendren live for us in chicago in locked out and thank you very much and. and a lot done in tunisia is in place people can only leave their homes for essential things mosques cafes and restaurants have all been shot and the borders are closed a 72 year old woman became the 1st victim of the virus when she died on thursday despite the rising number of deaths and infections iran's leader says he may lift the restrictions in 3 weeks zain best thing is into iran since the beginning of this outbreak for the iranian government there have been 2 major concerns the economic health of the country keeping in mind this is a country that has been debilitated financially by american sanctions for years now and the 2nd consideration has been for the government a public that has lost patience with it
9:11 pm
a public that sees it as relatively speaking unpopular so really the president here 'd trying to strike a balance between addressing this public health crisis and maintaining the economic stability of the country going forward and maintaining the social political stability remember this is a country that has lost patience with its own government over a series of crises that the country's experienced in the last few months and this is also a president who in one of his 1st appearances since the outbreak was announced in the country came on state television spoke to the iranian people and said that in his estimation the outbreak would be over in a matter of 3 days now that was weeks ago having said that the latest figures might suggest some reason for cautious optimism let me give you what the latest numbers are from the health ministry in the last 24 hours the new number of cases is 966 down from 24 hours previous and the new number of deaths is 123 down from 24 hours
9:12 pm
previous still very large numbers still striking figures in terms of the spread of this virus but this does indicate a relative downward trend. well it's important to remind ourselves that the vast majority of people who contract over 19 do recover we spoke to one such patient in iran who says getting sick was a traumatic experience and i'm all for the silence and also about 3 weeks ago i had shortness of breath i couldn't breathe i just thought it was because of a cold i even visited a doctor who said it was nothing important and prescribe some simple medicine as shortness of breath continued i visited a doctor on march 2nd and he noticed that my blood oxygen level was much lower than normal he sent me to a hospital emergency situation i was examined and had a chest x. ray then in the lab after i was tested they looked to be afraid of me i was told that i was probably tested positive is all you think ill your of course i was fearful it was
9:13 pm
a strange fear for me i am an optimistic person in general the feeling when i entered the hospital 6 in a way patients were waiting to be divided into rooms anxiety was running high in the ear some were coughing strangely some were screaming when you suddenly faced something that you've heard about much in the news and the fact news on social media that creates fear inside you then you feel all you hoped for and thought about suddenly are raised to the ground. libya's warring sides have agreed a ceasefire to allow the country to focus on the coronavirus threat a spokesman for libyan war latifa hafta has welcomed this so far no cases have been reported in libya but there are fears the health system would be unable to cope if people started falling ill last week schools were closed flights were cancelled and borders were shut in the west of the country as a precaution. al-jazeera has spoken to a doctor in southern italy who's tested positive for the virus giuseppi spina there's a new mall ijaz who was working in the only hospital in his area when his wife
9:14 pm
became unwell his tongue when to tell him no is now on lockdown the local hospital is being closed and he's in quarantine it's thought all the cases are linked to a school in the area but some have accused dr spina of spreading the illness here's a story we don't know might tell moliterno in the basilica region has a cluster of coronavirus cases there are not many towns in the south like militant which is in total lockdown there's no movement allowed looks like life has been extinguished here it's like a ghost town there's no one outside apart from a few people at the pharmacy or the local grocery stores and. in the days before my wife contracted the virus a few people visited the house friends and colleagues and people were being tested you know with my wife it happened all of a sudden she was healthy and then suddenly came down with a fever in a heavy dry cough it was violent and very strong and what really caught my attention was that her oxygen levels dropped dramatically on top of that is the
9:15 pm
other symptoms the lung obstruction persistent shaking and coughing tightness in an intense migraine a whole lot if you go down the difficulty in the south of italy is that there's not enough tests you're only a few tests available every day in the entire region but more importantly it's absurd how difficult it is to find protective equipment like the face masks and gowns necessary to. quite covert 19 and end up missing when i treated my wife at 1st i wasn't wearing protective gear because she had a small fever so i didn't think she had covered 19 so that's how i caught the virus as well i'd been taking consultations in the hospital and various departments while i was positive but i didn't know it and so the hospital's closed down temporarily to clean and sanitize the entire compound all my colleagues were tested not just the doctors but also the paramedics and the nurses. from a human point of view 19 has been devastated because my wife was the 1st confirmed
9:16 pm
case in the whole basilica region it's unleashed an incredible wast next door on me related to the gossip those who thought that i was the one who brought this virus to our area but covered 19 is a global pandemic it doesn't respect borders doesn't follow rules the virus has reached all corners of the globe in some way i do feel guilty guilty for having agenda even though i don't have any symptoms and even though i'm living with it my life continues normally except i've lost a bit of appetite makes one understand just how incredibly dangerous this virus can be for a human body if you don't have a strong immune system to fight it this virus will inflict heavy damage and that's why there of being thousands of deaths in our country. well as more countries around the world go into lockdown social distancing is being recommended is one way to contain the virus that's an unusual time for tens of millions of people but always they can make small but crucial differences and their lives explains.
9:17 pm
the where the. lonely. bored you go where you let me go or inspired. and creative life and equality for some it's not often in recent history that hundreds of millions around the world have shared a common experience so unique and unprecedented. some have been living under lockdown for days others for weeks and some for months trapped inside their homes doctors say that could lead to stress and anxiety the biggest advice i can give here is just to kind of find something in your life that you might focus on and so i was there when i was out in trying to do some shopping i saw a lot of people rushing to the store struck hardware stores sort of gardening and i
9:18 pm
think that's a very good idea to kind of say ok i get a sense of control great sense of achievement back into your life in china where tens of millions have been under lockdown for weeks online gym classes and physical exercises are some of the ways people have tried to cope and keep themselves fit and. maintain a better our are active have you at home. in your social contacts ritual grounds have it in. and important to stay in touch with your friends and i'm things especially hard for patients at hospitals and their family members who are barred from visiting them in italy where many are dying without their families by their side this frontline doctor is helping his patients connect virtually. initially i thought this would have
9:19 pm
worried them to see me in a state that would emotionally draining them it turned out to be the exact opposite participated altogether in something miraculous. i think in this hospital in south korea doctors are using our. consulates to pretty appalled to help patients deal with extreme loneliness in our hospital. let me take you to a live press conference. where the committee in charge of managing the corona virus outbreak in the country is giving a press briefing the spokesman of that committee. is speaking including grassroots will continue across the state of qatar this state of qatar with authorities on the part of this is are doing what they can. the outbreak without loss however responsibility and social. consciousness should prevail it is a very critical factor may god save the state of qatar and. the citizens
9:20 pm
and that there's no shortage. of press conference today and we have i mean he has somehow medical. chief of operations representing the interior minister. it was a representative of the health ministry and called so they were present to the trade so and those 3. ministry was the 1st question by the news agency. the measures handed down recently for events public gathering in the public box and so. the coronation as well jim the end assumptions are clear all the social gathering prevented including about gathering would then listen shells on. in case a number of people are gathering within
9:21 pm
a particular vehicle the vehicle will be stopped by the tadpoles and questioned and such things are very clear all forms of gatherings are forbidden this also includes. gatherings and social events like weddings. we have seen over the past days that many families have cancelled their weddings and funerals and this is a very good. gesture by them and a question by a was a newspaper to the trade and industry minister in. the restaurants. and coffee shops in the facilities already showed that. as we said all this measures are meant to preserve the safety and well being of the public. and have got public facilities will be closed so that certain food supply.
9:22 pm
will be closed like those in the clubs the waterfronts and i'll go. with what this is meant to prevent any distribution of seafood to the population. with respect to the coffee shops and restaurants within our commercial shops and shopping malls and even they will be subject to the 1st circulation where they will be allowed to hand food deliveries abbots lives a restaurant premises this. means that all those will be delivered outside the premises or should the ministry told get there was the concern but these have handed down very straight restrictions in order to ensure that release on. our lives our income blinds any violations or any staff violating. being in a structures will be held liable. can you please explain with
9:23 pm
mr. security and their level ability of food supplies. and human hypermarkets today all the food should be outlets. to public marketplaces and they are not subject to the shutdown. said i want. to as we said bakeries and other food. will not be shut down however those with mass. gatherings will be shut down and where people. continue to observe the mr anderson . let's me i wasn't into this bombs and. this crisis management job at the hands of the committee why did you announce the individual's name of those who violated the court and see. if you made it whole that in
9:24 pm
the previous me queens and we said. later this will be. addressed any violation will be addressed as strictly and this is the top priority the top earthiness to put into force all the measure that is and i 2nd consideration is that those people have and unless my. name and contact with other individuals that's why we were forced to announce their names individually in order to alert the public or would you that those people who came in contact with those who violated that warranty and should immediately get. this mission and what of that is meant to prevent the outbreak this also means that all the people mentioned and the circular. 100 percent positive yet. those people came from overseas and they were instructed to remain home under
9:25 pm
a self quarantine and once of the violated their home quarantine should have been announced by the name individually. here. we have to elaborate on the measures to be taken up on our arrival from overseas. and no. evidence of that. changes more than we could have as bad as it is spreading. rapidly and why this is beyond anybody's imagination. does not serve more than getting contact with a person within. proximity of one meter it takes a few seconds we have also have seen that the virus can.
9:26 pm
on surfaces for a number of hours a long number of hours if not. many of the cases who have. where mainly from among purses arriving from overseas namely because there was a he was an influx of people coming from europe including united kingdom you know britain that's why we advise all residents and citizens are arriving from overseas to take place measures does this does not mean they are 100 percent positive however i think we should take the number one to closely monitor its own selves also this person should isolate himself in a cell for quarantine and not to come in contact with any other individual until tested that's why we. the public who have recently arrived into qatar to
9:27 pm
take this very seriously and. to treat this with responsibility. some young use i believe that they are. safe and even if they tested positive they will overcome the virus. stats showed that 40 percent of those who are admitted. between 20 to 54 meaning they are young. as i said the youth should take the matter seriously and the responsibly and again people are arriving and. to take this matter seriously in addition the residents and citizens if one person. to observe said
9:28 pm
quarantine he should address the matter seriously totally isolated for. 14 days or even. again those people who are arrived recently and are now quarantined they will be soon tested and we are doing all what we can in order to have them tested. again if any of them have demonstrated any of the symptoms like fever or breathing difficulties and dialled the 16000 law in order to get the. testing. is addressing a question to the health minister on. the condition of the person already tested positive note. come across. as you are aware of the total number of
9:29 pm
infections in $481.00 including those announced today. total of 27 cases have recovered including 17 cases today and this is a very encouraging sabar science and very minute infections are still under treatment in hospitals and quarantine the majority of the cases. others. but they do not require them to be admitted to intensive care units a very limited number is now in the intensive care units the total number of those in. the use. is fluctuating as many of them is discovering and other cases are being. upgraded from minor to moderate to
9:30 pm
severe and then they make it through intensive care to get it there are you watching on jazeera we'll bring you a live press conference from doha the committee in charge of managing the corona virus outbreak in qatar has been giving a press briefing there been representatives of the health ministry and the military there the spokesman of the committee spokeswoman of that committee lowell has been addressing reports in the local press that individuals who had been told to self quarantine and subsequently had broken that self quarantine had been arrested and named in the local press she said any violation would be addressed strictly and they were also giving information about public facilities which were going to be closed including public parks and beach areas have a food supplies all food lines food outlets would remain open.
9:31 pm
in asia thailand reported more than 89 new cases that's the biggest daily jump in the number of infections so far taking its total to 411 and singapore has recorded its 1st 2 deaths from the virus reports from hong kong where she says the government is stepping up measures to stop the rise. soldiers on the streets of the thai capital taking up the battle against a growing number of corona virus cases thailand reported its biggest single day jump in infections led by those who attended a boxing match at an entertainment complex earlier this month. around 5000 people were among the crowds and have since dispersed across the country the whole way there was news about other people from the books and serco was sick they do news was headlining all over the place and i was stressed as i realized i might have it
9:32 pm
as i have never felt any of these symptoms before. the spike increases the number of infections by 25 percent taking the total past the 400 mark from the start of the year thailand has been vigilant in trying to keep high risk visitors out of its borders it's a tough call for a country which relies on tourism and now another setback to its economy as the government imposes a partial shutdown of its capital singapore also reached a grim milestone with the announcement of its 1st 2 coronavirus fatalities on saturday there's been a surge in cases this week but the health minister was quick to reassure the nation i know singaporeans will be worried and anxious we must stick our rich and not give into office we have announced a series of save distancing measures yesterday and us all to that's a sort of precautions to keep ourselves and our families safe. in south korea
9:33 pm
a slowdown in infection rates this week proved short lived with 147 new cases reported on saturday south korea is still the 2nd most affected country in asia behind china its rate of infection is significantly down from the peak at the end of last month but public health officials warned that any recovery remained fragile and cluster infections could still emerge and there's hunger the you may feel that the current situation has improved a lot compared to the past but we continue to see groups infections and inflow from foreign countries i myself breaks at various places. south korea has been fighting the virus through widespread testing without resorting to the lock downs. heavy restrictions of movement which helped china contain the spread of life in china is slowly returning to normal after reporting no new local infections for the 3rd day but the authorities have warned that imported cases have risen by more than 200 percent this week with an increase of dozens daily all from overseas the government
9:34 pm
is taking measures to screen and quarantine passengers arriving into the country many of them students from europe or the united states hong kong had managed to prevent a rise in cases even at the peak of the outbreak in china but the city is now facing a surge in infections with a number of cases more than doubling in a week the rice was mostly due to residents returning from overseas but the government is highlighting another issue people in hong kong have been vigilant from the start on the streets and in public places it's hard to find someone that's not wearing a face mask but after months of taking precautions taken away from crowds and social distancing many are now dropping their guard and that the government says is the biggest risk to the city and the main reason they're expecting a 2nd wave of infections pollen are just there are hong kong. hong kong is an al-jazeera cameraman and china's hu province they went home 2 days before
9:35 pm
restrictions were put in place on january 23rd he's been in quarantine ever since is as life has changed considerably since the initial lockdown. the highway was closest the train station was closed. the community the residential community the compound i live was you know sealed off all the gates were sealed off just. you know manned by this community workers than ever than cheers so basically everybody stays at home that was that was that was a real real lockdown so nobody would be able to you know get out from these county you know the whole bay provisional government has removed the deadlocked on in the region in this province except the capital city will hon so basically people can move around to walk out of home to move around and go back to down normal life
9:36 pm
so you are outside or. if you you just came here and got stopped you can't you can't go you can't go back to your own place your own provinces and to work where you but you can either go there you know buy a car you drive yourself or take this you know child or bus you know this government arranged bus to go there. but still the activities evolving big crowds are not allowed in this county in south africa the number of people infected with it on a virus has risen sharply to 240 the country's health care system is already struggling and the people worried the pandemic could overwhelm it entirely from a demo that has this report from johannesburg. doctors detected the 1st case of covert 1000 in south africa earlier this month over the past 2 weeks more than 150 people have been treated for the virus as the government tries to contain
9:37 pm
the outbreak many are worried 28 year old stepson quater is one of the 7000000 south africans with hiv he says with an already compromised immune system his priority is to keep safe in feels like it's another. reload of a sort there actually really ill evolute and something that is good a lot of fear and words people living with hiv because we are in their denial of seeing what if they get infected what's going to happen why don't you choose that's what's the next steps millions like to pull have no option but to use often overcrowded public transport while private taxi operators have promised to disinfect and provide hand sanitizer many have been slow to implement the new guidelines public hospitals and clinics are normally crowded with people waiting for hours to see a doctor they are concerned the corona virus could easily spread when you come to
9:38 pm
our part of the world our public health care systems are broken our intensive care units are full even before we get to covert 19 so again there's a real danger and this is why i think we need international support for africa we need a mobilization of resources poor water and sanitation infrastructure in parts of south africa mean that many may not be able to wash their hands as often as they should increasing the risk of contracting cold 1000 in upmarket suburbs like this one homes in spaces a large states a wide it's easier for people to keep apart but for millions of others the reality is quite different thousands of townships across south africa. overcrowded dozens of families share one toilet streets aligned with rubbish and people have little if any space to themselves the government is using t.v. radio and the internet to spread awareness as quickly as possible and as promised
9:39 pm
quarantine spaces for people who don't have their own it's closed schools and banned gatherings of more than 100 people compared to europe and asia african countries have fewer reported cases of the virus but some experts worry that poorly equipped public health systems a failing to spot the true total and warn the continent should prepare for the worst for me al-jazeera johannesburg south africa or much of the focus joining the corona virus outbreak has been on the most vulnerable like the elderly and those with underlying health conditions but the homeless are equally vulnerable and increasingly overlooked as victoria now reports. for indians with no home to go to in the capital this pavement underneath a busy flyover office very little comfort. the homeless in new delhi face a daily battle against pollution traffic hunger and disease the threat of
9:40 pm
coronavirus is one more thing to cope with mohammed rafi says he's received no advice about how to protect himself from the disease my up asylum at the moment of been living here for years no one has told me about the corner bars i suffer from breathlessness. man help some of the city's estimated 200000 rough sleepers he's running workshops on the importance of handwashing say szell distancing and spotting common symptoms of the virus. initially people are reluctant to know about the corona virus but now they are very much cooperating our aim is to prevent spread. in europe activists say the number of homeless people has increased by 70 percent to 700000 over the last decade mainly because of the stereotype measures and high rents. in the french capital paris the m a o solidarity emergency shelter office homeless people somewhere safe and warm to stay
9:41 pm
but the staff who provide the service fare the spread of coronavirus could mean they have to shut the door to let you need to do to say. that ultimately we need to keep the shelter open for people who are coming out of very difficult conditions where we can buy dramatic life experiences the street is damaging and so obviously we will do everything we can not to put them back onto the street. the united states also faces an enormous challenge the white house says there are more than half a 1000000 rough sleepers in san francisco close 210000 people live on the streets in tent camps drug rehab centers or shelters most will struggle to self isolate without a home so city officials have set aside 30 recreational vehicles to be used as temporary housing for homeless people under quarantine these are recreational vehicles that are intended for people who may have tested positive for cobra 19 do not require hospitalization but do not have a place to stay. when homeless shelters and food banks are your only option the
9:42 pm
idea of society shutting down is unthinkable but that's the reality facing the latest on what he may struggle to survive this coronavirus crisis. victoria gate and be out there. well as a number of cases rises around the world global markets and national economies have taken a huge hit industries around the world are being forced to make dramatic cutbacks to survive travel restrictions have devastated the global airline industry they say they'll need $200000000000.00 to stay afloat air canada and scandinavian airlines have already axed thousands of jobs and some of the u.k. and u.s. as large as providers say layoffs are coming for worldwide tourism the estimates are even more dire one puts losses at one trillion dollars with $15000000.00 jobs expected to be cut retail too has come to a standstill high streets around the world are closed for business in the u.k.
9:43 pm
clothing outlet top shop and department store john lewis on among a number of brands temporarily shutting all their stores but not all businesses are feeling the pinch in fact some are booming grocery stores for one but it's chains of lawns to hiring spree to fill more than 30000 jobs more greg swenson's a partner at investment banking firm brigham mcadams joining us live on skype from london thanks very much indeed for being with us for those of the on of those on the outside of the world economy the fact that the airlines are demanding such a lot of money from governments around the world when there are so many other things that money should be spent on seems unusual why is it that the airlines should be getting this treatment. well i'm not sure that they should end they have a massive massive lobbyists in washington in westminster and they're you know obviously they're going through a rough patch right here with the current virus crisis so there's no doubt that
9:44 pm
there is going to be some pain in the airlines but i think it's it would be wise for governments to to not over shoes and try to choose winners and losers remember it's not just the airlines that are suffering here you know you've got suppliers you've got a whole supply chain in travel and leisure that are going to be suffering so i'd hate to see too much taxpayer money going toward bailing out the airlines when there could in fact be more supply side measures to help the entire economy of a country not just a particular sector there is always a strong argument for suggesting that small and medium businesses are actually the backbone of every economy fight that was alluded to by president trump in his press conference just about an hour ago or so. what is the danger do you think that these small and medium sized businesses are essentially going to get shouldered out of the way by the big companies when it comes to this money being handed out. well i think you bring up

a good point rob and i'm glad that the president mentioned on the press conference yeah there are 60000000 american workers employed by small and medium sized businesses and it's similar here in the u.k. so i think it's important that the president you know looks after the industries that might be important for the you know in helping and assisting the recovery of the economy but not overdoing it and just trying to pick winners i think he's going to stick to it and make sure that workers are looked after and not just shareholders of companies i think it's important to do both and you saw that with the fed actions this week can and with the stimulus that's being provided by governments around the world both in terms of fiscal stimulus from the governments themselves and the treasuries as well as monetary stimulus from the central banks so i think everyone's got to come together on this and help both the markets but also the economy not just the big companies but small and medium sized companies and and make sure that the workers you know that money is flowing to workers and more importantly what workers keep more of their paychecks but paychecks by

reducing taxes given your experience and analyzing the global economy what do you think projecting forward the world's economy is going to look like and say 9 months to a year. yeah it's tough to say here i mean obviously there's so much uncertainty in the markets right now and in the economies but what i could say about a year from now is it will be looking really good it's 3 and 6 months from now that i'm worried about there's no doubt that there's going to be a massive correction in the markets and and massive loss of of productivity and in g.d.p. growth so you might see even 10 percent you know negative g.d.p. you might see you know 510 even 15 percent unemployment rates in countries that were doing quite well prior to this prior to this crisis but what i can say is that a year from now things will be managed much better you might see i think a lot of economists are calling for a rebound already in q 3 and q 4 after some real pain in q one and q 2 but
