heard from the u.k. prime minister barak's johnson what was he saying about the situation in the united kingdom well again boris johnson urging people absolutely to comply with the restrictions that are in place here after a very sunny weekend that has seen parks and outdoor recreation spots beaches caravan parks and others absolutely crowded with people mothering sunday mother's day it has been today the government obviously concerned about that and warning that if people don't stick to the rules if people don't comply then stricter rules will be coming down the pipeline including greater powers to the police to enforce these things he also outlined a new proposal so-called shielding program for the most vulnerable individuals in society people with underlying health conditions not just the elderly. bone and blood cancer sufferers the sick fibrosis people who've had it wins donated the transplant to for instance they are being told now to stay at home to not go out
9:07 pm
and any circumstances even to collect or buy food special measures will be put into place to help them do that and they're being told that they're going to have to do that for a minimum of 12 weeks an enormous length of time and all the forest johnson could do really was outline these movies and offer some sense of collective hope and this is what he had to say. each and every one of us you are doing your bit in following this advice you are doing your bit to slow the spread of the disease and the more we collectively slow the spread the more time we give the n.h.s. to prepare the more lives we will save the faster we will get through this and always remember we will get through this and we will beat it and we will beat it together. so brutally boris johnson hopes to the french to the germans to the spanish doing their bit everybody around europe the epicenter of this crisis not

being able to do their bit and all that while everybody watching these numbers continue to grow it actually and hopefully hoping against hope they're doing enough now to prevent the very worst happening to that jonah thanks very much indeed for the moment well let's move on to john hendren who's joining us on skype from chicago so john as given they are there the situation in the euro but in the u.s. things are changing rapidly as well what's been going on there john. that's right the u.s. had about 10 percent of the global total of cases about $30000.00 coronavirus cases here in the united states and about half of those are in new york state new york state actually has about 5 percent of the global total cases of corona virus at $15000.00 the bulk of those more than half $8000.00 cases are in new york city and the mayor of new york city is upset bill de blasio has said the president is from new york and he's not doing enough for the state says they don't have the equipment
9:09 pm
they need the masks the gloves the federal hospitals and the governor of new york state mr cuomo andrew cuomo has said he wants 4 hospital set up in new york state alone this is the beginnings of a number of local officials in states and cities around the united states saying the federal government simply needs to do more and one of the people who said that is also the new governor of illinois where i am now and where we are among the 80000000 americans now on lockdown governor j.b. pritzker was on the morning talk shows on sunday and he also tweeted back to the president the president had said calling out pritzker by name that he and a number of other governors should not be blaming the federal government for their own shortcomings trump went on to say we are there to back you up should you fail and always will be j.p.
9:10 pm
pritchard tweeted back just a short while ago you wasted precious months when you could have taken action to protect americans and illinois and you should not be leading a national you should be leading a national response instead of throwing tantrums from the backseat it goes on to say where were the tests when we needed them where's the p.-p. eat as a reference to personal protective equipment he says get off your get off twitter and you do your job so you can start to see the. tempers are getting a little hot here the president will probably have a further response when he holds a news conference later this afternoon the virus is also starting to strike a little closer to home to the president himself we've already heard that a white house staffer it tested positive the president the vice president were tested after that and apparently have come up negative and now we hear just within the past hour or so that the 1st u.s. senator rand paul a republican from kentucky has tested positive for the virus 2 members of the house
9:11 pm
have also tested positive so things are starting to get to a point here were tempers are flaring in the president is fighting with local governors john hendren reporting forus of from chicago we appreciate it thanks very much john all riots of prisons in colombia have left at least 23 people dead there have been violent protests out a number of presents as panic spreads over coronavirus and made sphero an outbreak of the virus bars without a sound on piano he is joining us now from bogota just give us an update 1st of all of the numbers involved in this. yes absolutely the minister of justice the colombia minister of justice spoke a little over a half an hour ago confirming that 23 inmates. were killed have died in these riots overnight riots in prison in their main male prison here

there are no cases so far of 19 in any of the colombian prison so that happened overnight the situation now is back to normal that this shows just how tense the situation is in colombia as it prepares for a full 19 year 99 days long lockdown in the country on a sunday ramp yesterday in bogota thank you very much. cuba is sending medical staff to lumbered it to help italian doctors fight the outbreak there cuban doctors were in the front lines in the fight against color and haiti and against ebola in west africa 10 years ago. has more from havana. over the last 50 years even doctors have saved millions of lives in latin america asia and africa now for the 1st time a cuban medical brigade is on the way to europe there are 36 doctors behind me and

the country's fragile economy is highly dependent on tourism and authorities only announced they would restrict entry into the island on friday. we're not closing the border meaning what we're doing is regulating entry into the country people except those that are residents of our national territory we're not only our countrymen there are other foreigners that reside in cuba were some who because of their work are here for several years. cuba is lending italy these medics at no cost but for over a decade the leasing of doctors and nurses has been the island's top hard currency generator. with cuba's tourism sector hit hard by the corona virus pandemic the communist party will be hoping that unprecedented global demand for doctors will help pay for the power food and running water cubans will need to get through this crisis a silver lining perhaps a dark moment a day long curfew has ended in most parts of india but it is being extended in some

states but the number of cases rising every day health care officials say the country is now at a critical stage elizabeth put on as more. in a city of nearly 20000000 people the streets of delhi were practically empty on sunday and it was a similar picture around the country but most people understanding the need for the lockdown. this curfew that has been imposed by the federal government in every state is good because in maharashtra in mumbai the case is increasing fast. on normal days this area is bustling in every league crowded but everyone is understood importance and is taking care of themselves but if anyone is coming out we are telling them to follow their nutritional information and. half way through sunday the government announced it will extend the curfew in the 75 districts with confirmed cases including in the capital new delhi. or metroid passenger trains and

a moment of unity and supporters the government faces the challenging task of limiting the spread of a country with the world's 2nd biggest population and it's a problem al jazeera new delhi. well the pandemic has forced the closure of schools around the world disrupting the lives of hundreds of millions of children and that's posing unprecedented challenges parents many of those children are now confined to their homes raising questions of how to keep them occupied but also how the isolation could affect their development and then there's the psychological impact not only from being isolated but also the anxiety and the stress that comes with a crisis on this scale on top of all of that there's education online schooling is already a reality for many children but making it work is another matter and well let's speak to donna dawson in london she's a psychologist and a former contributor to parents magazine thanks very much indeed for joining us on all jazeera what kind of issues are children going to be facing under these
9:19 pm
circumstances. well the main one is food i'm after having a structured day at school they're used to being kept busy and being told what to do and now they're at home at loose ends missing their friends and getting bored and of course once kids get bored they start to fight with each other or nag their parents a lot of this isn't very real to the kids it's not very real to a lot of us adults as well but where are you working from home like i always have or you're just starting to work from home we kind of have to have new rules now about how kids structure their days and what we do with them and how we help each other how do you think and this is perhaps an unfair question because i can imagine it's covering a whole raft of possibilities but how is it best for parents to try to explain to a child that what they are going through is important and does matter but not to
9:20 pm
frighten them at the same time. well i think being very matter of fact about it because there's no point lying or diminishing what's happening it's everywhere they can see it for themselves on their phones on the internet it's about being truthful that there is an illness out there you know a bit like measles kids would understand that that they could catch and that if they catch it they could get very ill or their mothers or grandparents could get very ill and that we all have to play our part i think they know this because it's been all around them the schools have told them they've been over the hand washing ritual many times the thing for parents to do which is neither withhold information or get overanxious about it if you have your own personal anxieties save those for either your partner or a friend later on in a telephone conversation but i say be truthful because i think kids need to understand this is serious that a lot of kids can't quite grasp this yet so you know there's no point keeping it
9:21 pm
from them but but just stay calm and stay reasonable and you know we'll get through this i can understand saying calm and reasonable and being truthful but certainly when it's dealing with young kids but of course they're going to be many parents who have teenagers and teenagers as we know as we've seen over the last few days a very social individuals they want to be with their friends and they will do in many cases anything they can to make that happen if you're a parent with a teenager who is determined to prove that they are immune to this what kind of action can you take their. well i've got a teenager living with me and he's very happy to be on the internet a lot more than he normally is this is how they're socializing with each other for many kids that's how they've socialized full stop so the idea that they might want to go out is kind of the thing you've got to discourage and if that means i don't know locking yourselves all in or you know barring the door holding on to the car keys the thing they mustn't do is get together in social groups it's fine to go out
9:22 pm
next assize if you're staying within you know within 6 feet of other people distancing yourselves but yeah it is a problem if they want to get out the main thing is to vary the day they used to structure so if there is some kind of loose structure to the day where you kind of divide the day up into chunks you may be working yourself from home but for i would say to any parent working from home 2 hours max because after that research shows your concentration goes do something with the kids i actually see this is quite a positive time a time with families can actually do more stuff together whether it's baking cookies watching a film together walking around the block or just talking these are things we often put on hold in our busy working daily lives and these are things we can actually get back to playing those board games you haven't played in years you know listening to music and discussing what's happening in the world all of these things are important because kids don't want money they don't particularly necessarily need large groups of friends they need time with their parents much more so than
9:23 pm
we've been able to give them until recently let me just ask you very briefly about the parents themselves there's a lot of support that we're talking about for the children who are going to be going through this this is a very stressful time for parents who suddenly have to essentially be teachers and to carers and so on home in an environment where they're not used to be doing that some of them are working from home as well how do parents manage their time and their psyche their own psychology to be able to deal with this. well i just think taking it day at a time and making sure that if you are working the kids understand that's the time when they have to be quiet that your work is important for everybody not just for you but for the found me so they understand there's something in it for them so they'll cooperate as well hopefully but break your day out so that if you do 2 hours of work you spend some time with the kids or going out for a walk around the block or in the garden that you you know actually very your time as well because it's exhausting to try to work all day and then get constantly
9:24 pm
interrupted with kids who are boring bored or fighting so you know make be easy on yourself if you need time away from the kids too you might want to go to another room and say i'm just having an hour's peace you know i'll see you in an hour and take a cup of tea or a glass of wine but becoming to yourself be good to yourself treat yourself this isn't a time to say be on a diet or to be abstemious this is a time to enjoy what you can in the house and to think about the family as a unit you're all in this together and as a community we're all in this together it's not going to last forever this is what i think you have to remind kids that we'll get through this really good to get your thoughts on this don't endorse and we appreciate your time and i just really thank you very much you're welcome well as countries like germany are advising people to stay at home or limit their movements some have chosen to ignore their government's advice these images of cities bondi beach on saturday prompted the australian

government to immediately shut down the area similar scenes and bars and public parks around the world led authorities to take similar action some imposed police to curfews and arrested violators while others called in the army and ordered all non-essential businesses to shut down any fenech is a professor of organizational behavior of a hold international business school he explains why some people struggle to stick to government guidelines. we've seen differences in how different countries around the world have responded to the coded 1000 situation what we're seeing for example in europe and in the u.s. governments are taking their time they don't know how to react to this and because of this inconsistent way of communicating a lot of people allow themselves then to interpret what's going to happen and so in this sense. it makes it very difficult for people to know what to do so what we're now seeing basically happen is more and more people more and more countries are
9:26 pm
starting to look down in and imposing curfews and more restrictions because they see that because of the inconsistency in the communication and people not hearing to certain rules or or let's say restrictions they should see that this is the only option that they can take to ensure the safety of the citizens we are very social animals so are social beings let's say so when we don't know what to do in specially in these times of uncertainty we tend to follow other people especially other people like us and so social media plays a big role in that. but also the same time we also want to we derive a lot of meaning and security so we have this kind of sense of security because of the social groups that we engage with and this is probably also another reason why people are let's say going out socializing when they should not actually be doing so there's a lot of uncertainty going on and when there's a lot of uncertainty going on people have to interpret how they want to react and
9:27 pm
everyone's coping system is very different and so as we're seeing that some people are just kind of ignoring the information it can one way this can be a way of saying you know i don't want to deal with this this doesn't really exist you know it's that it's something invisible so i don't think it's going to be very threatening so therefore some people kind of find a way to reason why they want to ignore the situation there's also other reasons why people are ignoring the situation. it could kind of also be kind of more of a kind of a defiance in a sense well as we mentioned the pandemic has forced the closure of schools around the world destructing study for hundreds of millions of students and their teachers but for some students home schooling and online education are helping we spoke to michelle rankin's a teacher in spain and her son but all rubia they're both using the learning tools at home which they say come with its own challenges. brit doing out best don't teach him home. it's very different obviously because that primary and secondary

have to find ways of reacting to it but we're also working doing online teaching with the adults the we use different platforms which i learned friendly but is taking time to get parents who are less than 1000000 with the technology than the children and the pillows starting friday the 13th and we started with the online teaching on the monday so yeah we had to work quite a bit but we kind of saw it coming so we tried to we experimented between us out to make sure to make sure where but it is challenging best like a stronghold dog to get into the habit of. get in the fall and in the homework oh and i just did it on the computer as you well me have to do but it's mostly like just there where you have to how to do this like to do the homework is just you know most of the primary most of the primary aged children who

and there had some very heavy amounts of rain calls that into flooding across northern sections of the middle east and still plenty happening in areas of iran but they still as a work their way steadily south was across much of the arabian peninsula and there's been plenty of lightning thunderstorms and also some hail coming in with these storms this is dubai this was on saturday not really that unusual many of the cities across the region actually saw something fairly similar now through monday we should actually have a much clearer picture generally throughout much of the gulf but plenty of rain showers working the east and north. pushing on into afghanistan and still a line of rain heavy at times right the way as you can see here through these coastal areas of amman and down into yemen pushing it a bit further off the coast as we had to choose a bit still it could be a damp day and more showers back in the full cost much of turkey and again those shows work in the east and north across much of the stands and then we had down

the next 4 weeks. from new infections to the number of deaths and where else it has to spread to we're getting information about covered 9000 on a daily basis and while it's important to stay informed the information being given can be difficult to understand there are global guidelines for testing by the world health organization but countries may adopt differently and germany we've seen a lower mortality rate compared to its european neighbors because that may be because it's been testing more people early on the u.s. is far behind many countries in testing the public meaning the true number of cases may actually be higher than what's being reported and then there's the potential that some countries simply aren't reporting the toll despite most being legally obliged to by the w.h.o. north korea and soviet for example haven't recorded any cases goes an assistant professor at the london school of hygiene and tropical medicine and she's joining us on skype from london thank you very much indeed for being with us why is it so

difficult in the case particularly like this to get reliable data from countries around the world. well you highlighted one if you think is that different we are often the place so that a confirmed case in one city or one country's most necessary doesn't represent the same thing as a concern of some or are these different paths in part isn't something some part is only asked a lot of cases others are suspected case in the movie this makes it difficult for us to do both the basic challenge and thanks for another form the number for our and it also makes it difficult to compare between our views on this place is very here because those numbers mean different things so we have to be very cautious in making these for instance why is it that some countries as we mentioned awed legally obliged to do this and yet. that some of those countries are simply not

doing it whereas they the legal backup if you like the legal action that could be taken against them if they don't comply i don't know that they need the authors of it but it is a key force the number of that testing positive for this test that we've done is a lot and though our are the same capabilities to do tests and to do the number of tests as others so that's a key part of the number 2 months. we have seen a series of spikes and surges in numbers over the last few weeks and in the media we have been reporting them what is the risk you think that those spikes that we have been reporting may not be down to an increase simply in the number of coronavirus deaths but actually a different way all of reporting those figures from a certain country is an excellent point and that's something that we in epidemiology and modern do a lot of work to find this in time all these factors so that we can have a true understanding of earth and number of cases and the number of deaths
