banned for a week and in the coming hours the u.s. senate is set to vote on a trillion dollar stimulus package but democrats say that republican proposals favored corporations over work is well let's now go to our correspondent who is in london nadeem we heard the british government this morning criticize people for being selfish in terms of not socially distancing as much as they they possibly should we hearing a shift in tone and policy here as they prepare for an upsurge in cases. possibly nastasia the that's been the talk on everybody's lips in the last 24 hours because over the weekend it was a sunny day like it is today lots of people went to the local parks or to tourist hot spots in large numbers and people were not observing the recommended social distancing guidelines telling people that if they do need to go outside for
5:03 pm
legitimate reasons like exercise they should keep 2 meters apart on monday in the last few hours there have been photos shared on social media by people who took the london underground in some of those trains conditions were extremely crowded again we're at liverpool street station one of the capital's busiest at rush hour it was very quiet but you can still see people mingling about there are many people here who work on building sites some of them were eager to tell us that they were worried about conditions in both the office space that they're using where there is no 100 sanitizer and actually on sites where they're working in close proximity as well now the government's taking over the finances of the nation's train services and those services are being reduced gradually but tend to go in percent sure workers like health workers and people who work for the emergency services but at
5:04 pm
the same time you've got people like the laborers like her office workers who are still heading in to cities around britain and who are exposed to coronaviruses we keep hearing so there is a real dilemma as to how quickly and how tough the government should act but the health secretary or monday as you said called people selfish people going out and not observing a social distancing and warns that there could be a kind of curfew in the near future and again as we've been reporting we've also seen this huge spike in cases in continental europe and you see very grim news continuing to come out of italy and now out of spain as well talk us through that trajectory that we're expecting there. yeah well that's crucial because lots of people here in britain are looking at what's happening in continental europe to see how the future might pan out and over for example in spain as you were saying the number of deaths rose in 24 hours by around while more
5:05 pm
than $460.00. confirmed deaths between sunday and monday taking the overall number so more than 2000 and it's thought that we're about a week behind here in britain germany is now taking very strict action limiting gatherings to 2 people so also american herself in quarantine waiting to see whether she has called it 19 of course it's really remains the worst hit country now of course it overtook china in terms of deaths but it's still seeing an increase in acceleration in cases and in long body the worse it region workers at a chemical factory there are on strike because they are being told that they can continue to work even though the government has moved to close down many areas of industry people here in britain are looking at all of that and looking at the graphs and looking at how the hospitals in places like long body are still on the
5:06 pm
desperate conditions and still saying people you really need to stay at home and they're getting worried because as i was saying people here don't seem to be taking fully on board the advice from the government they should stay at home and so many people will be looking in the in the next days and weeks at some kind of limit on people going out at least. that across all of these developments for us and thank you. well markets have very recently opened down on new york's wall street after another morning of falls across asia the opening bell rang about 30 minutes ago but it was quiet on the floor no traders allowed into the new york stock exchange all the market trading is now being done electronically because of the shutdown of the city of new york well let's bring in gabler's under who is in new york for us we've also seen this very hefty barrel of programs that's been announced by the u.s. federal reserve in an effort to try to shore up the markets how's that been playing
5:07 pm
out as the markets opened this morning. yeah new york stock exchange is down about between one and 2 percent in the last half hour or so since the opening bell nothing seems to be working to bolster this market at least so far but we have 2 major things that are happening here on monday to try to stop what is widely viewed now as a complete freefall of the u.s. economy the federal reserve announcing early on monday that they are going to be pumping billions of dollars into buying bond buybacks $700000000000.00 to treasury secretary securities $200000000000.00 in mortgage backed debt this is all meant to basically keep the markets funded and keep the economy in some way shape or form running but beyond that they're also announcing billions of dollars details still coming out the billions of dollars to help small
5:08 pm
businesses throughout the u.s. as well there's a wide view now with the fed that if nothing is done urgently small businesses which are the backbone of the u.s. economy could be closing and wide numbers huge layoffs expected if nothing is done so this money that the fed is announcing they're going to hopefully get out to small businesses urgently will help them pay employees for another month or $2.00 maybe prevent some. closures of some small businesses so that is what's going on with the fed in washington and you also have the white house officials finance officials meeting with congress members and they are trying to hash out a trillion multi-trillion dollar deal to fund some sort of effort as well to keep the economy afloat during these times just to summarize here if you want to get a sense of how bad this is the federal reserve board president of st louis put together a study and he came out late sunday saying that if nothing is done the u.s.
5:09 pm
in the 2nd quarter could reach a 30 percent unemployment rate. and the g.d.p. could drop by as much as 50 percent that certainly caught a lot of people's attention that's a worst case scenario but that's coming from a federal reserve bank president in the united states based on data that he's looking at huge huge terrifying numbers that are gay but we've also as we were just saying hearing the bell go at the new york stock exchange and all quiet on the floor today because trading is being done electronically how is that going to walk for the 1st time in the new york stock exchange modern history if you will 1st time and 228 years there will be no traders on the floor of the new york stock exchange it's important to point out trading continues already before this most of the trading was done electronically the guys and gals that sometimes you see on the
5:10 pm
floor of the trading floor those famous photos and video that we all see on the floor of the new york stock exchange of frantic making phone calls they were doing part of the trading but they were mostly kept there in a symbolic reason that's now done all of those people are out not allowed to go in the flaking trading floor is completely closed because of worries however that trading that those folks did those traders did on the floor that is now just been switched to be done electronically so the new york stock exchange is open trading in the 1st half hour or so appears to be running smoothly with all this electronic trading but that doesn't mean the markets are down they are down about one and 1.3 percent the dow so far as of this minute bottom line though is the coronavirus has shut down new york state shut down new york city and even shut down the new york stock exchange trading floor again for the 1st time in 220 years unprecedented days gabriel is on to there for us in new york thanks very much again. well as we've

been saying airlines around the while that will say grounding their fleets as the global health imagine sea hits international travel that's remind you of what some of that looks like singapore airlines is the latest to cut back its operations taking 96 percent now of its planes out of commission and that follows decisions by emirates and takesh airlines to hold nearly all of their passenger flights and major travel hubs are continuing to close their doors the u.a.e. that's home to the international hub of jubei suspending all passenger flights and carrying transit travel as the international air transport association says the industry now stands to lose more than $100000000000.00 in revenue this year well i spoke to alex materials who is an aviation analyst and he says the drop in air travel will be felt through a number of industries it's almost too much to comprehend because this really does go as far as the company who made the read that you consume and that you use on

board for your own ball mills too large a scout for example production of commercial aircraft if we take airbus who are located in front of us this morning they actually reduced production of new aircraft well that's very well in that they are taking new measures with social distancing in and reducing their rate of output of new aircraft but the airline simply would not want to tape those aircraft because the majority of them are ground you planes right now and that's going to have a huge effect and it's already a huge effect on the global aviation what fools we see and i was asked to take unpaid leave was seeing other relevant layoffs chason just completely lay off now start members and some further notice and it's unclear whether or not that well. if this is the most uncertain period for aviation that we have to see and the effects on the industry and the employment we're going to be destructive. well while new infections are decreasing in some asian countries there's no sign of
5:13 pm
a slowdown in most of the region governments are responding with tighter restrictions new closures and travel bans could last for up to 6 months scott hyper reports even while there is some positive news on curbing the spread of covert 19 in some countries in asia pacific like south korea it's of the fewest new infection cases since its peak in february many more nations are moving forward on shutting down non-essential businesses and restricting movement indonesia just began a 2 week emergency period and hong kong will banned foreign arrivals for 14 days starting on wednesday this after a recent spike in corona virus cases mostly imported the increasing economic impact on the region and the still unresolved 2 trillion dollar u.s. rescue package forced most major asian stock markets down as the new trading week started captains of industry leaders of union must really has implemented strict restrictions on non essential services and social gatherings cited together and

and again i'm the star and a reminder of our top stories this hour in spain the health ministry has confirmed that there are now more than 30000 cases of coronavirus and the number of deaths is over 2000 on sunday the prime minister extended the state of emergency for another 15 days. india is expected to stop all domestic flights in the coming days that has extended a curfew across major cities just bite at the spread of the carotid virus there's been a rise in the number of cases there in the past few days. and governments across asia introducing further restrictions in an effort to stem new infections singapore and hong kong have closed their borders to international travelers astray or new zealand asking residents to avoid all non-essential movement. well as we were just
5:19 pm
saying that india is also expected to stop all domestic flights in the coming days our correspondent elizabeth purana has more on that countrywide lockdown from the capital new delhi. most indians do understand the need for this and that is because even though the number of confirmed cases in india 414 does seem really low for a country with a population of 1300000000 people india has also performed the lowest number of tests among affected countries something like 3 per 1000000 that was a was about 90 a day and there are increasing concerns that the very low level of testing could be hiding the real number of cases and so indians a brace in themselves as the government has now expanded testing criteria and doubled the number of testing centers brought in the private sector private hospitals so there was something like 52 testing centers the government testing centers and not all of them were operational it's double that people are really
5:20 pm
bracing themselves to see what the real number of cases are and there has been an exponential rise just on saturday and sunday both days saw the biggest jump so again you know unprecedented times here like like many other places in the world but for now most indians do understand the need for the for the lockdown while the world health organization says testing people with symptoms of the virus lies at the very heart of fighting this pandemic but many regions are running out of testing kits and laboratories don't have enough supplies to detect cases so countries are now having to ration their kits and that means less testing has more . a new virus with no known vaccine after covert 901st emerged in china governments around the world face to staggering challenges 1st to contain it spread and 2nd detecting people who have it eyes only

people are in the lockdown the push to test as many people as possible has never been more agend priyanka gupta al jazeera. well and lebanon the army has been brought in to help to enforce a public lockdown as cases of 19 continue to rise across the country 248 infections have been confirmed and 4 deaths the government's already grappling with a financial crisis and now it's being criticized for its handling of this one as well as anaconda reports from beirut. the army and security forces have been called in to enforce a lockdown declared by the government and largely ignored by many lebanese concerns grow after a rapid rise in the daily corona virus infection rates movement is now severely restricted that we can no longer contain the virus we will hit into the unknown of every citizen doesn't take the necessary measures. it's been nearly

a week since the authorities sealed lebanon's borders they had already closed the public and private sectors as well as educational institutions but the pace of infections hasn't slowed the relatively unsatisfactory degree of compliance in the streets makes the state of emergency more likely to be clear i believe the cabinet has been avoiding to declare it curfew because it would entail a number of hard measures that would definitely narrow certain rights lockdowns are harsh for the poor and informal workers who rely on daily wages and in lebanon they are not being compensated. little by little every man who has a family has to go out and provide for his kids in all countries when a state of emergency is declared the government helps them medically and socially. an unprecedented economic and financial crisis is only worsening it is believed
