a building makeshift facilities as the health care systems struggle to. india orders the world's biggest lock down 1300000000 people are told to stay indoors for 3 weeks in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. and the olympic games in tokyo have been postponed for a year because of the global spread of the disease. the new york and new york has been a major battlefront in the fight against the corona virus pandemic the largest us city now has more than 25000 confirmed cases and that number is rising rapidly medical facilities meanwhile a struggling to cope and are facing potential shortages of things like beds ventilators and even staff but the u.s. president says he hopes to have the situation under control by easter gabriel
2:02 am
elizondo ripples out from new york. sobering news for new yorkers the situation is worse than 1st start with the coronavirus rate of infection doubling every 3 days we were looking at a freight train coming across the country we're now looking at a bullet train. whose the numbers are going up that quickly the apex could be here in as little as 14 to 21 days this is basically the governor says the white house has not prioritized health to the state that needs it the most new yorkers 25000 cases it has 10 times the problem that california hands 10 times the problem that washington state has you prioritize resources and your activity and your actions to where they are needed and new york you are looking at a problem that is of
2:03 am
a totally different magnitude and dimension. new york will need 140000 hospital beds to care for the ill they currently have 50000 available. new york city's largest convention center has been converted into a makeshift hospital but it won't be enough. york is also exploring converting colleges and hotels to hospitals as well recently retired nurses and doctors are being asked to come back to help fill the need and global event elaters are in short supply new york now needs 30000 the governor urged the white house to send him thousands more that the federal government has and storage and that are not being used you have 20000 ventilators in the stockpile release the ventilators to new york how can we be in
2:04 am
a situation where you can have new yorkers possibly dying because they can't get a ventilator. but a federal agency saying i'm going to leave the ventilators in the stockpile. as for the streets they remain mostly empty up both people and cars new york is essentially on lockdown and given the increased cases of coronavirus it likely remain like this for at least many weeks to come. april sandow how does it on your well let's have a listen then to the president on what he had to say in his daily press conference the army corps of engineers and the national guard are building for hospital facilities in new york city at the javits center which will be operational very soon they've already started in addition the building 4 separate medical facilities in different parts of the state we're dealing with governor cuomo in that city
2:05 am
going to 4 hospitals and 4 medical facilities at the highest level to really incredible facilities temporary but incredible we're also deploying the u.s. navy hospital ship and that will be arriving in new york harbor in the not too distant future it's finishing its maintenance doing a very big maintenance and what we did is we condensed it very seriously. well global markets on monday in anticipation that politicians in the u.s. will approve a 2 trillion dollar economic stimulus bill in the u.s. the dow jones industrial average climbed more than 11 percent its biggest one day rise since 933 on monday the federal reserve announced unprecedented measures saying it will buy u.s. government bonds in unlimited quantities now fears of the impact of the pandemic has battered markets in recent weeks all right let's go live now to washington our
2:06 am
correspondent there is mike hanna so obviously pleasing news for the president with regard to the state of the markets but he was quite anxious will need to lay the fears that are being expressed by quite a sizable number of governors that they simply haven't got what they need to deal with this pandemic. well president trump appears to be focusing on the stimulus to the economy far more than perhaps some other issues surrounding this pandemic he made very clear in his news conference in the course of the evening the daily briefing from the coronavirus task committee that the stock revolved was very important he attributed to the fact that there is a possibility of an agreement in congress but he also said it was as a result of his decision or his intention to relieve the lockdown in many parts of the united states within less than 3 weeks now
2:07 am
a number of medical officials have pushed back against this and president trump himself clarified to an extent exactly what he meant when he said this repeatedly in recent times saying that this does not apply necessarily to the entire united states but certainly it's got to be the situation in a number of states that are not infected at this particular stage another opinion that some of his medical advises have also pushed back on and we have to remember of course it is a reelection year for the president but those calls those desperate calls coming from various governors are just getting louder we have a man who cuomo of new york state is saying they simply haven't got enough they have got enough ventilators have got an awful lot of equipment that they need. well indeed here is the governor of new york state in particular absolutely furious by the fact that the federal government is tardy slow in terms of delivering much needed facilities the federal government and president trump insisting that the
2:08 am
governors have got to lead the fight against the pandemic the federal government is there to support but we also heard there from the mayor of new york city bill de blasio for example saying that he has had several conversations with president trump in the last few days and he respectfully disagrees with the president saying that the city is just trying to get through march now april's likely to get worse and then the next month of may is likely to be even worse than april he says the idea of any form of partial relief of the nation wide lockdown within a week long of a 3 week period is absolutely unthinkable at this particular point this is the opinion of most of the country's governors and mayors in various districts certainly that timeline being advanced by president tram being rejected vehemently by most of those at a non federal level mike hanna live in washington thanks very much but now we can talk to julie fisher has
2:09 am
a professor of microbiology and immunology at georgetown university she's joining us also from washington and thank you very much indeed for talking to us so as the w.h.o. is warning that the united states is likely to become the next epicenter of this pandemic and you're hearing president trump talking about the possible reopening of the economy by easter what are your thoughts about how the federal government is dealing with it so far. my thoughts are that state and local leaders are looking to the federal government for clear guidance on everything from the best measures to prevent the spread of this disease at the community level to understanding what assistance will be available to make sure that they do not run out of absolutely essential medical supplies so to hear at this point the idea expressed that we'll be able to let up and debt somehow imposing these controls that are designed to spare people at highest risk of severe disease and prevent the u.s. from becoming the epicenter of the current 1000 outbreak in the world that we will
2:10 am
be able to just let up in the hopes of stimulating the economy it seems to be a triumph of hope over strategic planning and to ignore the best expertise that is coming out of both the federal experts and those who are advising the president as well as researchers throughout the u.s. and across the world and president trump often sounds the odds with scientific views but what are your thoughts then about the possible spread of it across the united states we're seeing a real hot spot in new york ses and the city itself as well as also on the west coast in washington state and in california what about the vast middle of the united states. well the the epidemic in the us has started on the coasts where there is the most the heaviest travel to places that had already been experiencing the outbreak so that's where we're seeing it unfold but what we have seen on the
2:11 am
coast is that in these early days of community transmission the cases increase incredibly rapidly and very quickly reach a stage where they can overwhelm the whole system as we're seeing right now in new york where every resource is being brought to bear to deal with a situation that to be frank is predictable from seeing what has happened in other countries so the best models we have suggest that this infection is going to roll toward the middle of the united states steadily. with no intervention certainly quite rapidly moving by the middle of may most likely and of course in the whole country by june and then with the kind of community control measures we are seeing imposed on the coast and in some of the major cities in the us it would slow it a little bit but we could we could slow down the spread so it doesn't reach the country into the middle of june and so that there are fewer cases over of but it
2:12 am
will continue to spread to the middle of the country primarily because we believe that there are many people who are infected and have either mild symptoms or no symptoms that are and are not even aware that they are exposing others fuel efficient thank you very much for talking to us live from washington thank you for the provirus pandemic is overwhelming health systems in some european countries both the italian and the british governments are opening makeshift facilities while in spain an ice rink in madrid has been turned into a temporary morgue paul brennan has more. one in 5 spanish residences age 65 or older so the devastating impact of corona virus in the country is no surprise what's shocking is how the care system collapsed so quickly under the onslaught military emergency units are disinfecting premises as fast as humanly possible as here in madrid the care home staff have been overwhelmed with desperate consequences. mentality and i know the majority are fulfilling their duties they
2:13 am
are paying attention but listen this has to be said the army in some of their visits to the care centers has seen elderly people completely abandoned even dead in their beds with hundreds hospital morgues full this ice rink has been requisitioned to receive and store the bodies of the coronavirus victims so infectious even in death but the staff are wearing full protective suits it's really the latest clinic repurposed as a coronavirus unit has opened in rome every single patient requires truly intensive care intensive in terms of staffing and intensive in terms of equipment and there is simply not enough to go around why do we go so i learned by not feeling more than a growing number of italian town mess of recorded video messages angrily ordering the public to stop flouting the lockdown rules one math reference to send in the
2:14 am
cabin yairi with a flame thrower to break up a planned graduation party they pretty the shortage of critical care capacity in the u.k. is being at least partly addressed with a brand new temporary hospital being created in just one week at a huge exhibition center in london rules the n.h.s. 1000 go hospital will comprise 2 wards each of 2000 people. with the help of the military and with n.h.s. clinicians we will make sure that we have the capacity that we need so that everyone can get the support they need. the 1st time coronavirus restrictions are now having a tangible effect on millions of u.k. citizens a stay at home order has replaced the previous advisory guidance but not everyone seems to have grasped the urgency this grocery store here in red hill is about the only shop that we found open in this town but the lockdown is far from being
2:15 am
strictly observed here and maintaining it over what could be 3 or even 4 months is going to be a real challenge and construction workers in particular show little sign of social distancing or other precautions an example of this site in central london was far from unusual across the u.k. but religious services of all denominations are banned wedding plans and baptism ceremonies are on hold only funerals will go ahead this virus robs the joy from society and leaves only the grief paul brennan al-jazeera redhill. well the largest lockdown in the world has now come into effect after india's prime minister narendra modi ordered the population of 1300000000 people not to leave their homes and this comes after the country reported more than 500 confirmed cases of the virus and 10 deaths elizabeth purana reports now from new delhi.
2:16 am
after 2 days of heavy restrictions in most of the country prime minister narendra modi spelt top the situation facing all 1300000000 and. listen carefully the whole country from today 12 midnight the entire country it would be in a complete lockdown in order to save india in order to save the citizens of india and to save yourself save you and your family today at 12 midnight there would be a total ban of venturing out of your homes every state every territory every district every village every locality is being put on lockdown. mode he said that was the only way to stop the spread of the virus but even before the prime minister's announcement police were out in force and the lockdown around the country and the capital in new delhi police dismantled all the protest sites against the government's citizenship law including. people have been gathering
2:17 am
there for 100 days to show they opposition to the legislation which fast track citizenship to minorities from 3 neighboring countries but excludes muslims living very deep in the back you're going about i would like 5 women were sitting there and nobody else was sitting there to seize them and damage the protest site the people are very angry because of this there is the issue of growth of ours we are supporting the measures but the women who the police are detained should be released. police detained 9 people after a van in groups of more than 4 people gathering. this is a very dangerous environment because of coronavirus and some troublemakers are trying to create problems but we detain them and took actions to clear the protest site. but some people who were out buying groceries said they were attacked by police. we came to buy vegetables at
2:18 am
about 5 or 6 o'clock but police chased us off with patterns there is this disease and we except that there is this disease and the lock down is necessary i agree but there will be a time when people don't have food to eat if they don't let us buy vegetables then how will we eat the transportation of essential goods will continue but passenger flights trains buses metros and taxis have been ordered to stop their services. despite prime minister modi saying people will still be allowed to go out to buy essential supplies people have rushed to grocery stores around the country uncertain of what the next 3 weeks will bring and while modi announced the government will spend over $2000000000.00 on health care to fight the virus millions of the country's poor who've lost their livelihoods a still waiting to hear how the government will help them elizabeth al-jazeera new delhi.
2:19 am
take a look at the top stories here of new york's governor has made a desperate plea for medical supplies warning the corona virus is spreading rapidly in the usa to andrew cuomo says as many as 14000 people could need intensive care treatment within 2 weeks. after 2 days of declining death rates the number of fatalities in italy. has risen again by more than 740 in spain has recorded its highest daily tally of deaths and confirmed cases. india's 1300000000 people of being put under lockdown for the next 3 weeks people are banned from leaving their homes of the government says essential supplies will be made available. now in china's hu bay province where the outbreak began restrictions are being lifted off the several days with no new reports of local infections similar story across
