712 people have died today 1st number that was communicated by the civil protection there was a region that was missing so the real number is 712 that is more than yesterday but less than 2 days ago the losses last week have been between 60750 every day so the total death. the death toll since the beginning of the our break rich today $8207.00 it's still the highest in the world. also the curve of the total number of confirmed cases rose again and is growing faster than yesterday and now more than 80000 people have been tested positive since the beginning of the our breaking need to leave with an increase of more than 600 from 6000 from yesterday sorry every day the new positive cases grow approximately by 8 percent today the increase is

suddenly found themselves out of work overnight and one could expect these are just the weekly jobless numbers in terms of those that manage to get out of the house file their claims this number is only expected to rise we've already heard that the number of people that lost their jobs overnight whether it be a full time job whether be a freelance job in the so-called giga connery in the 10s of millions so this is not a good economic indicator having said that there is an effort underway in the u.s. congress to try and mitigate that in fact the exact words of nancy pelosi this is emergency mitigation the passage in the senate now in the house of representatives we expect will be voted on friday is going to be a package 2 trillion dollars in something that's sort of designed to flood the u.s. economy with cash but also give direct payments to those that need it most those americans making $70000.00 or less they'll get a $1200.00 check their children they'll get an additional 500 dollars but the
9:18 pm
interesting thing in all of this despite this effort to try and help ordinary americans and the health care workers and the big businesses it's not going to be enough already we're hearing this from lawmakers chuck schumer a top democrat the house of representatives saying odds are high congress will need more measures and that's the palosi the house speaker in the house of representatives saying that there is still going to be a next phase right now they're calling this package mitigation the next phase will be recovery they know that there are still bad numbers to come and they're going to have to deal with that committee thanks very much a big can we how could there in washington d.c. now $100.00 people in your state have died from crude a virus in the post 24 hours the governor of that andrew cuomo says officials a skeleton for additional locations to expand a hospital capacity but wounds the state is not prepared to handle the rising number of cases. almost any scenario that is realistic

will overwhelm the capacity of the current health care system we have approved a technology that allows one ventilator to serve 2 patients what they call splitting which is where you add a 2nd set of tubes to a ventilator to do 2 patients it's not ideal but we believe it's workable but speak to gabriel is on to his life for us in new york and a gay but sobering words there from the governor saying that almost any coronaviruses in our any coronavirus in our will overwhelm the hospital system. that's right particularly in new york and we're already seeing it at least one hospital in new york it's elmhurst hospital in the queens area of new york where we've been told that in 24 hour 124 hour period 13 people died at that very
9:20 pm
hospital you go there early in the morning and there are dozens of sick patients who are lining up before sunrise to get into the hospital to try to get tested or to just get into the emergency room because they are sick and another hospital in new york city we've seen a tent makeshift tent areas set up outside the hospital to take in patients that are coming and on social media we're hearing from doctors in new york city that are crying for help saying that they don't have enough supplies in some cases and things such as ventilators things such as masks and gloves in short supply so the hospital system in new york is already starting to feel the 1st bit of that wave of people that are sick coming in to try to get help here's the scary part the governor said we're still about 20 days away from having the apex of that wave meaning the apex the highest number of people flooding into the new york hospitals
9:21 pm
but we're already seeing some hospitals that are already approaching crisis stage 20 days away it's a grim in new york but how is it across the rest of the country. you know we've been talking a lot about new york because that's the epicenter of course new york 37000 cases more than by far more than anywhere else in the u.s. however there's a 2nd crisis that is now starting to develop in the united states and that's an exponential increase in cases in other states we've of course got california and washington state more than $2500.00 cases in each of those but listen to this in southern states florida texas louisiana georgia states the numbers in these states are increasing by about 25 percent a day in louisiana capital new orleans a major city in louisiana new orleans they are now having more cases
9:22 pm
faster than any where else in the world now there are almost a 1000 cases just in the city of new orleans this is grown exponentially just in the last week that's in just the city of new orleans in the state the number is many thousands so now what you're starting to see is this spreading very rapidly to other states and the real thing is all these other states they're testing but not nearly as much as new york is so soon as these southern states start testing as much perhaps as new york does you're going to see these numbers jump even higher but clearly this corona virus is not being only contained in new york california washington it is in all 50 states but now growing so fast particularly in these southern states that i just mentioned right across the country thanks very much to guerrillas on the new york to the united kingdom where the government has launched a new scheme to support millions of stricken self employed workers on able to because of the current of ours now those eligible can apply for monthly grants up to $3000.00 jones to finance minister says the policy is one of the most generous

and the british chambers of commerce is also welcome just saying that recognizes the complexities that the chancellor has hands to go through in order to get this scheme devised in such a short period of time and they can federation of british industry the c.b.i. says that many self-employed will be hugely relieved tonight that new measures that will provide the essential supports the chancellor was at pains to say not everybody will benefit 95 percent that the other 5 percent it seems are those self-employed who are holding 200000 pounds that surrounds you 130000 dollars a year you could argue they probably don't need government support but it is an unprecedented intervention and an example i think evidence i think of of these unprecedented times that we're living in or a poor thanks very much indeed the situation you could put britain. the leaders of the world's major economies at the g.

20 have been holding a virtual summit to discuss a coordinated response to the pandemic let's speak to our diplomatic editor james base he's been following the situation he's at the united nations in new york and james this epidemic this pandemic has been showing up for a lack of international cohesion have we found any now. well i think that is the problem where is the international leadership where is the international cooperation normally g 20 summits are very well planned affairs somewhat lavish affairs i was in a socket japan last year but would dinners of all the leaders this time a very quick 90 minute video conference call between the g. 20 leaders they came out with this their declaration it begins with the words the virus respects no borders and makes the point there needs to be an international solution but there's not a lot of detail here not a lot of commitments they say what they want to achieve but there's no details of
9:26 pm
of money that they're going to give with regard to this listen to what the secretary general of the united minister told them he said all countries must be able to combine systematic testing tracing quarantine and treatment with restrictions on movement and contact well there are no similar words in there he's also asked for a global seems far in the world's conflicts and he's asked for $2000000000.00 in a special fund for the poorest and most troubled countries on earth no financial commitments to that in this the other thing the secretary general has asked for and some other leading nations of asked for is restrictions on sanctions those countries that are under sanctions so they can get the medical help that they need again no commitment to do that in this g 20 statement and i think it's pretty fair to say nick that right now the whole system of international diplomacy like many other ways of work around the world is struggling it's normally done by
9:27 pm
personal interaction the center is the united nations where i am right now at u.n. headquarters here in new york and as you just heard from gabriel the situation in new york makes it absolutely impossible for people to meet face to face in their identities are living there now thanks very much indeed james bays there in new york. when not of those they marks the start of a 3 week lockdown in south africa where there's been a dramatic increase in infections the country recorded a 6 fold rise in 8 days and that's taken the confirmed number of cases to more than $700.00 it is the highest rate in africa police and the military have been deployed to enforce the lockdown which includes bans on dog walking and alcohol sales let's speak to for me to miller our correspondent who's life was in johannesburg for me to how people reacted in the lead up to this lockdown which begins in what just under 4 hours well people in south africa are such neve very worried oh
9:28 pm
they are concerned about this rising number of confirmed cases of the coach at 19 which in fact in the last few hours it's been confirmed is in fact is collated to $927.00 cases and that and just you know 10 days ago they were just 61 people are worried about the impact that this outbreak will have on the country and the economy especially as they face this down receiving some panic buying we've seen long queues at a.t.m. so i'm outside stores people really concerned about just what the slump down will mean there's not been a lot of uncertainty about how it will be carried out in the last couple of days government ministers have tried to bring some clarity as to the rules what can be done what can be done when people can go but at the end of the day the government is asking a lot and asking is telling people to stay home or for major thanks very much indeed for me to miller on that situation in south africa.
9:29 pm
we want to remind of our top stories this hour and the death toll from corona virus in its me has grown by 712 in a day 80000 people have been infected just 1000 behind china's to. another in a new country is struggling to cope in spain its reported 655 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours. newly released figures show more than 3000000 americans applied for unemployment benefits last week has created 90 batters the economy that is 5 times more than the previous record back in 1982 let's take that out we can speak to lenny mcallister who's a former congressional candidate for the u.s. republican party and a commentator now he joins us live from pittsburgh pennsylvania mr mcallister
9:30 pm
welcome to the program these are troubling figures out there not set to get any better soon it's very worrying isn't it. it is very very very much wearing and it's not just one industry or another part of it is because of the consumer economy here in the united states everybody interrelate it so for example they were just talking about how some auto plants may be looking to open up within the next couple of weeks targeting april 6th but for every wind factory job with the auto workers there's anywhere from $4.00 to $7.00 jobs connected to that one job whether it's the restaurants or gyms that are available or hotels or people coming in out of town for business all of this is interconnected together and when you have these different ranges of outbreak in different states here overall you have an impact on the economy these numbers are very startling but they're not that surprising unfortunately and it's making people rethink how to reopen the american economy back up in a way that say from a health perspective but also is looking forward at the economic health of not just
9:31 pm
the united states but the world isn't the truth about that there is no safe way of doing it right now despite what the president says he said that he would like things up and running again by easter which is just not realistic is it a disco is against all medical advice and could well endangered lives. and that's what the problem is if you go just by the health professionals yes we're going to have to do this a lot longer than easter sunday if you look at where we are at the nation economically what it's doing to things such as education for schools and the like we're going to have to start looking at ok what's the safest way to drink it's still going to be a risk and truly balance that with the help professional that data as well as the economic data or image or other societal issues that we're juggling right now and to make it seem as though we're going to just be out of the woods from a health perspective on easter sunday might be premature but really the approach from these governors and from the president and i have to be something that's balancing all of the factors in regards to american life what it is now and what it
9:32 pm
needs to be when everything starts opening back up how serious is it if the economy goes the way some people say it might with a reduction of 50 percent if the economy continues on this downward spiral what do you fear could happen. we are the great depression not the great recession and if you have the great depression going in an era where where already divided politically as americans were divided culturally as americans we're finding this tension that we've been seeing pretty much for the last 20 years here that continues to escalate it's going to be that much harder for america to rebound from a cultural standpoint and from an economic standpoint you look at $911.00 at least the country was willing to come together in that moment of crisis in heal and move forward together what you're finding right now is people you know some people don't believe that coburn 1000 is a serious as it has been there are other people that are saying it doesn't matter we need to open up the economy right now there's
9:33 pm
a 3rd set of people that are saying do whatever it takes to keep people safe you don't have everybody singing from the same hymnal and as a result if the jobs keep shedding away and the economy continues to go spiraling downward the result is you don't have a united america to pull itself out of this the way we might have had in let's say 2008 or how we had more 911 in 2000 what it's it's certainly a delicate balance that the medical advice of course is that people should stay away instead home and otherwise it could in danger lies but we'll have to maybe then lenny mcallister do appreciate that thanks very much indeed. for that god bless. well china is to block foreigners entering the country from saturday that's because nearly all of its new covert 9000 cases of people who've come from abroad china has started easing restrictions in the region where the pandemic started but other asian nations are struggling to contain the spread his david pollan reporting from hong kong. china's leaders are continuing their push to get people back to

work and life back to normal airports and railway stations have reopened and who bay province where the most drastic locked on restrictions were enforced until this week tens of millions who are confined to their homes for weeks in the province which still accounts for the majority of china's 81000 cases nearly all new infections in china in recent days have been imported from overseas with the 20 number china appears to have passed the worst government ministers are reaching out to other countries to lend expertise or should teach all solution to what we fully understand the difficulties of others and that provide assistance to the best of our ability the chinese government has announced that it would provide 83 countries and the international and regional organizations such as the world's health organisation we emerge and see assistance. southeast asia was on the periphery at the height of the outbreak in china but many countries there are now struggling

malaysia has the highest number of cases in the region prompting the government to extend restrictions on people's movements until april the 14th. malaysia suffered its biggest daily increase new cases on thursday raising the infections total pos 2000 new cases are also rising in indonesia but government leaders in the world's 3rd most populous country are stepping up this infection and sanitizing measures rather than keeping people at home this infection and hand washing stations are open in the capital after confirmation of nearly 800 cases in jakarta coming to the fore side to me at the moment many people in public still remain active there are no restrictions or lockdown orders so we hope this will become one of the alternatives to prevent the spread of covenanting. you zealand has had its 1st day at its highest level of alert requiring people to stay home health ministry reports

9:37 pm
a political alliance between him and the caretaker prime minister benjamin netanyahu let's learn more from harry forcedly joins us live from west jerusalem and benny gantz actually nominated himself a speaker why did he make this move. that's right well i mean as of yesterday as of wednesday benny gantz and the entire opposition were criticizing the former speaker u.-t. edelstein and his likud party the party led by benjamin netanyahu because that will stay in had failed to allow for a vote which would have allowed the opposition to put its own person as speaker and start legislating in a way which may well have harmed benjamin netanyahu is grip on power and of course benny gantz has throughout his just over a year long political career made his brand almost entirely about removing from office replacing with a stable figure himself prime minister that he's called corrupt poison to democracy and has said that cannot serve while indicted well all of that now looks to have
9:38 pm
evaporated because benny gantz appears ready to serve in a unity government an emergency government to tackle the coronavirus epidemic with benjamin netanyahu continuing as prime minister the reports suggest that dance may well get a very senior job in the government foreign minister defense minister. netanyahu may well make way or promise to admit to make way in 18 months time we have yet to see any of those details emerge will be concrete there are also reports that it might just be a 6 month emergency government dances saying that he's doing this out of consideration for the fact that israel is an emergency that it's time for statesmanship and patriotism not for splits but many on the left many of his former colleagues because his own blue and white alliance has now broken up over this as saying that this is a century of betrayal and that he's now serving with someone he said he would not serve with or her thanks very much indeed harry vores there in west jerusalem. the u.s. justice department has charged venezuelan president nicolas maduro and several senior

officials with drug trafficking the attorney general william bell announced indictments and his top lieutenants are accused of running a so-called narco state using the proceeds of the cocaine trade to make up for lost oil revenues let's speak to our latin america to my friends from chile from santiago tell us more about this and its timing. the timing is rather peculiar because it coincides with an agreement by the united nations to supply aid emergency humanitarian aid to venezuela to help to cope with the coronavirus outbreak in fact not just venezuela but most of the countries in latin america who are desperately needing it as this virus spreads but it in practical terms there's it's almost impossible to implement this indictment short of sending in u.s. troops to pluck nicolas maduro and his closest allies out of the country which is
9:40 pm
very very unlikely in the current sonari oh remember the last time something even similar to that happened was in december of 1989 when the united states invaded panama to take out general manuel and don't you know who had also been accused of drug trafficking but he was not technically a head of state so it is a different situation so far the last my little has not reacted to this although i think it's safe to say that the government will be putting out a statement soon calling this another act of aggression from the evil empire that will have absolutely no impact and nor will it. will it detract from the continuation of the varian revolution or of nuclear smuggler in power in any way or lucio thanks very much indeed and soon you will. now the gunman accused of shooting dozens of muslim worshipers at mosques in new zealand has reversed his not guilty plea brinton tyrant's now admits to $51.00 murder charges as well as 40

attacking remote villages burning hearts decapitating people abducting the since the beginning of this year we've seen attacks escalating an hour this week attacking 2 towns of you said one on monday one on wednesday morning in the town that was attacked wednesday morning the fighters filmed the video which has been circulating on social media thursday now that's on precedented as well because for the duration of this conflict that armed group hasn't had any known leader and hasn't stated any aims or put out any communications so this video that's been doing the rounds on social media is a 1st glimpse at them but it you can see 2 men 2 fighters holding guns and a flag one of them speaks in portuguese and has a fairly simple message just calling people to join the group and fight he says that they don't want wealth they just want to bring islamic rule to the region killed nearly a 1000 people in in the 2 and a half years it's been running $100000.00 people displaced and in recent months

9:49 pm
at the center of infections in japan the capital recorded the biggest one day increase of wednesday with the least 40 people testing positive i ask a quarter as this report. japan's famed cherry blossom is in full bloom and tokyo's residents are making the most of the spring spectacle while they still can . coming just after japan took the painful decision to postpone the 2020 summer olympics everyone here has been given a reminder of why their government took that step a sharp increase in the number of coroner virus cases in the japanese capital has led tokyo's governor to urge everyone to stay indoors this coming weekend. we must 1st take measures to prevent the spread of the corona virus or we cannot move forward and that hasn't changed and. so far life in japan has been relatively untroubled by the global pandemic with businesses and restaurants remaining open.
9:50 pm
but gradually a realisation is setting in that life might be about to change. when you are stuck at home it's stressful so i wasn't sure if i should be here but i wanted to come. my wife wasn't happy about me visiting tokyo but it's outdoors and if i keep my distance from other people i think it's ok. the olympics are meant to be the high point of prime minister shinzo obvious premiership and their postponement is devastating for the japanese economy prime minister has faced criticism at home and abroad for his handling of the coronavirus outbreak japan has conducted only a fraction a pest thing carried out by neighboring china and south korea meaning the country could be facing a much bigger hidden problem however serious this outbreak gets obvious hopes of japan becoming a major tourism destination with 40000000 visitors disappear seem to be dashed he's
9:51 pm
really been focusing on boosting japan's inbound tourism he's also been very keen on encouraging the hospitality business to appeal to the but if we reach our clientele the nation and the olympics were supposed to be an opportunity to showcase japan for the international community so without that success i think he's economic strategies actually losing direction for now the mood remains largely festive but as this surge in new cases continues japan knows that optimism i disappear as quickly as it's blossom. i asked as is here at tokyo. now the mayor of one of the hardest hit cities in italy says a champions league match could have contributed to the spread of coronavirus in the north of the country burgos top officials says they're looking into a theory that atalanta's game with valencia could have caused many of the city's residents to become infected it was his biggest game in history with the team
9:52 pm
having reached the last 16 of the competition for the 1st time now a 3rd of residents made the trip to watch the game seriously dim because atlantis home ground was deemed too small. among the explanations that have been put forward concerning our sad record of crowbars cases in bergen mo is the football match played at the san siro stadium between atalanta and valencia during that evening there were 40000 burger moment habitants who went to milan to watch the game they gathered in the stadium and many others watched it from their homes and families in groups at the bar and it is clear that that evening there was an opportunity for a strong spread of the virus but i don't think that was really the starting point of everything. here i'm sure that $40000.00 people hugging and kissing each other at a distance of one centimeter 4 times as a atalanta scored 4 times well those were an incredible accelerator for the infection now was it something predictable no i don't think it was predictable i
9:53 pm
don't remember the date of the atalanta vs valencia match and i don't remember if this epidemic had already outburst but the people who went had no clue of what was going on russia is grounding all international flights from friday midnight except for russian airlines flying citizens home from other countries borders were closed last week in moscow and people over 65 have been told to stay home 3 russians have died with 840 reported cases so. while a large part of economic activity is shutting down in the united states some businesses including grocery stores delivery services and pizza shops and seeing a boom in sales one of the witnesses might come as a surprise that as john 100 not reports from chicago. across the u.s. businesses are baring their shelves boarding up and shutting down. one industry is booming fear i think that people are fearful that if the conditions were
