4:00 pm
it will be a challenge and that's what people expect of us they want the questions answered. that is what the way sometimes but we will continue to. this is al-jazeera. hello from doha everyone i'm kemal santa maria and this is the news hour from al-jazeera no sign of abating another jump in the number of deaths from corona virus in spain 832 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours in india and nationwide lockdowns wreaking havoc on thousands of commuters in new delhi as transportation options become limited's while life slowly begins to return
4:01 pm
to normal in a province once the epicenter of the virus in china. will also be looking at how the social media movement called care mongering is helping vulnerable people cope with the crisis wherever they are. and it's for china's top football league is aiming for a quick return to action the teams are now back in training hoping to kick off the season in may. so another surge in the number of people who have died from coronavirus in europe as the continent struggles to contain the outbreak spain 832 people have died there in just 24 hours it brings the total number of the dead to nearly 5700 since the outbreak began italy also really struggling to control things on friday it recorded the highest death toll of any single day anywhere in the world it was $909.00 teen deaths as a result of covered 19 in 24 hours and there's also
4:02 pm
a $21.00 day government lockdown which is affecting lives of hundreds of thousands of market workers in india a public transport service is suspended leaving millions of. stranded so as the pictures show traveling on foot for hundreds of kilometers and that's just to get home we also have a quick look at the state of play worldwide from the johns hopkins university tracker upwards of 614000 confirmed cases 28000 deaths but we should point out 135000 people who have recovered as well just want to have a we look at europe well i do want to have a look at europe but the map is not changing on so we'll come back to that a little bit later on in the meantime will introduce the team to you for this hour liz with piron i'm in new delhi where as we said thousands of residents making their way out of the capital and that 4th day of lockdown generals in london all the developments in the u.k. and europe starting with marta herero in madrid what an extraordinary number it was this increase in debt smart and it must have
4:03 pm
a huge impact on the medical workers and just on the national psyche as well. yet terrible numbers today more than 800 people have died of coronavirus in the past 24 hours in spain raising the death toll up to 5619 and the amount of people infected surpasses the 72000 cases so quite worrying those figures as the situation so particularly bad in madrid can you take us through the regional side of things. yes well has become the epicenter of the pandemic since things started to we have now nearly 2800. of dead people out of 5690 we've seen how an ice rink here in madrid became a more because we didn't dig couldn't cope anymore at the municipal funeral home and yesterday we were reported that the court just 50 of cordoned off just to see
4:04 pm
madrid will be coping these there as well today the health minister has green lighted the spanish army to move all these dead bodies from one place to the other so the situation is quite dramatic here image it it really is thank you mother who are with the updates on what's happening in spain there. thank you now just before we go to jonah hill in london i've got the map that i was telling you about before this shows you the picture in europe at the moment and whilst obviously we have these big headline numbers out of there you see the upwards of 9000 deaths and spain as we were just talking with matter upwards of 5600 just remember places like germany 53000 confirmed cases but only 400 deaths so in a continent like europe there are different stories coming out of the place and not all of them are as bad but particularly italy and spain jonah as i said is in
4:05 pm
london to take us there will looks like you're up on a high vantage point actually want to you tell us a little bit about where you are and numbers of people you're seeing out and about . we're on day 5 here in the u.k. all of the sort of strict new lockdown guidelines issued by the government on monday night requiring people to stay at home if at all possible to go to work only when absolutely necessary or if absolutely necessary otherwise restricting themselves to purely essential trips to the supermarket or to the pharmacy that one bit of exercise day to walk the dog will have a joke or something and for that to be done for a short a time as possible well lots and lots of reports across the country of people flouting those regulations crowding into pox and green spaces beaches recreation spots in what has been a very lovely sunny spring week and the weather of course set to continue well i mean primrose hill at a viewing spot you can take a look behind me there quite a lot of people sitting on benches enjoying the view others exercising others
4:06 pm
bringing their kids out on their bicycles some people have been lying on the grass it's a lot cloudier than it was an hour or so ago when it was full sunshine and very much nicer than it is now there's a farmer's market operating at the other end of the park down there and down here there's a busy and very pretty high street where the book shop is open the butcher is open the wine shop is opened. shops are open quite a busy scene down there along with the walkers and the joggers as well the police are out they've got new powers to try and enforce these lockdown measures but what we've seen so far is more of a gentle touch of encouraging people to move on rather than waving a big stick and all of this i think will be of some concern to the author of he's come all with experts saying that the peak of the u.k.'s epidemic is maybe 2 to 3 weeks away the national health service scaling up franticly to be able to cope and the point of these lockdown measures is to flatten that reduce the peak allow the
4:07 pm
health service space to cope save lives and of course these images and repeated reports and with the weather improving as i say of people flouting the rules will be of concern any political developments join or mean that this time yesterday we were talking and suddenly the prime minister and the health secretary had 19 is it . for the weekend politically speaking. no new lines on that as yet we know that boris johnson is in self isolation now he'll spend 7 days will 6 presumably now more inside his apartment in downing street that the health secretary matt hancock similarly was diagnosed with corona virus on friday he will spend a week in lockdown as well and also overnight chris witty professor chris moody the chief medical officer he said to be in self isolation with symptoms of coronavirus though no positive test as yet these are the 3 most key people most involved in the
4:08 pm
front line battle against the corona virus pandemic getting the country up and ready prepared preparing the health services and so on to be able to cope it is warry in for the public i think to feel or know that they are now in isolation but the word very much from the government is that the prime minister is in charge when you going to run meetings from his place of isolation so is the health minister there putting out an image of business as usual for the time being at least thank you china in london with that live update. and now in india elizabeth purana is our correspondent in new delhi elizabeth we saw the pictures before run them again in a moment talk us through what is going on with these thousands of people on the move by foot. thousands leaving delhi kemal and that's just the capital region many more are on the move as you say on foot around the country entire families including the very old and just you know
4:09 pm
babies sometimes walking or being carried hundreds of kilometers says to return to where they're from india has something come on like 120000000 migrant workers and when the government announced around a week ago that it was going to hold up all the bus and train services to stop these for this great desperate rush at buses and bus and train stations with migrant workers you know just trying to get home and a lot of these people because their daily wage earners they have to work every day to survive they've lost their jobs they can no longer afford to pay rent where they're staying their company accommodation has been shot so that has been the situation for them over the past week and you know we've seen people walking along highways on train tracks obviously with everything shut there's no restaurants open and they have very little money they have no access to sanitation yesterday we saw
4:10 pm
. something like 300 people crammed into the back to contain the trucks trying to cross the borders the border between the states of telangana and maharashtra and temperatures of nearly 40 degrees so in that saloon desperate situation in the country for millions of people i spoke to amnesty international earlier and they were telling me that this lockdown has unleashed a humanitarian disaster for millions in india. bride elizabeth from sir thank you for that update liz but per annum there in new delhi. right want to look at asia now after more than 2 months of lockdown restrictions are being used in china as well han city remember this is where the corona virus outbreak began people are now allowed to enter the city but it's 11000000 residents are barred from leaving until i believe it sarah clarke has the story from there and other parts of asia life in here by province is returning slowly to normal more cars are back on the streets police are on patrol but it's health checks not traffic fines
4:11 pm
being issued. i'm here to pick up my 2 children and we are going to see one program that the 2 children have been in who the traffic is very small and china has announced a temporary ban on all foreign visitors starting this weekend even those with visas or residence permits will be denied entry only diplomats and flight crew will be exempt chinese and foreign airlines will be limited to one flight a week because of fears of importing a 2nd wave of the virus from a brought up to 65 days in lockdown for its 11000000 residents the city of blue hand has downgraded its signal to low risk traffic can now into but no one's allowed to leave the city until april the 8th government workers a sterilising train stations preparing for the arrival of the 1st inbound trains you know. a long time no see what i've been discriminated against because i'm for
4:12 pm
a new hand but i hope people don't treat the people awful hand like a fire if it's a full bar joins with china is winning the battle i read the news on the train that china is now trying to block people from coming here and preparation this will help us get back to work and i'm proud to be chinese. walkthrough testing stations are in operation at south korea's airports to enforce tight health checks on arrivals the government reported 146 you cases on saturday that's the highest number in a week with a rise in imported cases from europe and the united states and japan confirmed a record daily increase of more than 50 new cases following a surge in infections in tokyo this week japan's prime minister shinzo is appealing to millions in the capital and surrounding regions to avoid non-essential travel until april 12th here in hong kong the government has enforced tough new measures to encourage people to stay at home from saturday or cinemas gymnasiums and time at
4:13 pm
benny's will be closed for at least a fortnight and public gatherings will be limited to 4 people as the city tries to stem the number of local transmissions. al-jazeera has obtained pictures from inside one of the government's quarantine center is one person held there after being in contact with a flight crew member who tested positive says rooms weren't sterilized protective gear wasn't provided and health checks were random hong kong's health department reply is that it's followed the guidelines to clean and sanitize all quarantine facilities sarah clarke al-jazeera hong kong an update on iran now are $139.00 people have died of corona virus in the last 24 hours those latest figures pushing the death toll to over 2500 with more than 35000 infections the fight to contain the spread of the virus in the islamic republic has been halted by the spread of fake news nearly 300 people died because they took a toxic methanol and a false belief that it would protect against the virus more than
4:14 pm
a 1000 people in critical condition. there as well zain verjee is in tehran for us and that's a terrible story take us through that and the increase in numbers. absolutely kemal the spread of this information that perhaps consuming what is essentially industrial alcohol what is essentially pure alcohol that is not designed for consumption it's designed for industrial use this chemical agent if people believe or have been led to believe either through false information or not enough proper medical information especially in low income areas many people have been led to believe that consuming this alcohol will either prevent or cure them of the coronavirus obviously this is untrue and we've seen hundreds of people poisoned thousands poisoned hundreds killed in this process and medical professionals that we've been following on social media or that we've spoken to say that this is certainly something that is continuing to compound what is a real public health crisis so this is one of those things that we're seeing is
4:15 pm
sort of a side bar but a very important problem that is making the response to the coronavirus harder for the government for health professionals operating here to treat coronavirus patients in the country but it really does give you a sense of how desperate people are becoming in the becoming desperate because the infections continue to go up we've seen yet another site today in the number of cases 3076 another huge number it started in the few hundreds then in the 1000 figure it's broken to and today it's broken to 3000 figure mark as infection continue to rise the death toll has remained steady between $120.14 for the last several days was does give us a sense that perhaps the fatality rate is going down because the infection rates are going up but it's still certainly a worrying concern for the people here of iran now there is some good news president hassan rouhani in his cabinet meeting today said that there has been a positive sign that the number of people who are out and about who are carrying on
4:16 pm
intercity travel who are carrying on intercity travel that number has gone down he said that he has been able to note a tangible change which he assures people will make a difference in the government's ability to stop the spread of the coronavirus so he apply. iran citizens who have been. listening to the government guidance to help them fight this health care issue he also acknowledged that the strict controls that people are are being placed under the strict measures that the government has taken in the recent days to try to control people's movements he acknowledged that that is putting a strain on people's lives but he did say that as the trends indicate downward as as they begin to see downward trends which is happening in certain provinces they will loosen the reins but he said that the trend is upwards for both infections in and fatalities in large parts of the country we also heard from a senior health official from the health ministry head of the epidemiology committee of the coronavirus taskforce here in iran who had some disturbing bad
4:17 pm
news to deliver to the country he said. that the coronavirus in iran has been here undetected since as early as january 21 so a proper month before it was acknowledged as a public health crisis he also said that it still isn't in control that the control measures the government has put in place will remain in place for 2 more weeks and if things stay the same if people continue to cooperate with the government that by early may they think they'll have a handle on the coronavirus spread same with that update on developments in iran thank you we turn to the u.s. now new york actually which remains the epicenter of the outbreak there and the borough of queens which is affected more than anywhere else elmhurst hospital is already over capacity 13 people dying from coated 19 in 124 hour period there and cases have yet to take this report from deborah and is on the new york. they're sick and in urgent need of
4:18 pm
a doctor but with the emergency room hospital inundated with coronavirus patients and no available beds they arrive early in the morning to wait in line to try to get seen inside elmhurst hospital medical staff struggle to keep people alive in 124 hour period 13 people died covert 19 the hospital has 500 beds and his overcapacity on an. evening. a nurse shared video with the new york times a glimpse of what it's like inside another doctor speaking anonymously describe the situation like this it's just like a tidal wave the only beds we have been able to free up our people who have died it's a pretty dire situation covert is completely taking over the hospital they need help and they need help in a real way i've talked to
4:19 pm
a lot of friends of mine who are working there. they've been inundated with haitian right now. truly is ground 0. elmhurst hospital is in queens an ethnically diverse borough made up mostly of working class immigrants more people have died here than in any other area of new york city. health insurance is a luxury many here don't have elmhurst is a so-called safety net hospital that won't deny services to anybody even if they can't pay but it simply can't keep up with demand. perhaps most ominous of all is that apex in this surge of sick people needing hospitalization isn't supposed to hit for at least another 2 weeks there's a health care crisis with the number of new yorkers infected with corona virus increasing by the thousands every day it's not a matter of if hospitals here reach
4:20 pm
a breaking point it's a matter of when and based on what we're seeing here at elmhurst hospital that breaking point might be now paperless andro al-jazeera new york. schools across the united states have been close most of them with little notice and the state and local officials are on show when classes will resume fact in virginia schools have been canceled for the rest of the year protocol hindsight so that now what that means for families and students. the fields are empty the playgrounds deserted and all across the united states school buildings sit empty more than half of the country students have been sent home leaving parents to try and become teachers instantly that's especially difficult for parents of children with special needs everyone is trying to figure this out and the real key is to be listening to special needs families and parents and kids to understand what their needs are so we can adjust to this new reality can she make should be in
4:21 pm
a better position than most he used to be a teacher but given his son his special needs he says it's been a struggle i was trained as a mathematics major. but it didn't teach me how to help somebody who's have a trouble reading and that's a given granted students trying to learn how to read were problems they have difficulties reading is going to be hard for them to be able to solve those questions. studies have shown children from lower income families struggle to retain knowledge over the summer because in many cases their parents are not able to help them study and experts fear this long delay will hurt them disproportionately we've always had challenges with inequality in our education system and this new shift has really exacerbated that in an enormous way we're seeing some kids being sent home with homework but instruction with devices and some kids being sent home with nothing and so we really need to take that seriously and invest in those kids and families right now in fairfax county virginia
4:22 pm
superintendent scott broadband says they are providing why 5 to students without internet and computers to students who don't have one but he acknowledges even with all of that some kids will fall behind any kids. we find who struggle and don't get . learning as well as they need to over the next couple of months we're going to be looking at how we can provide additional support either in the summer or into the next year but he's in charge of a very wealthy school district all across the country millions of students won't have access to the technology they need to keep on track meaning they will fall behind another hidden cost of the corona and. particularly al-jazeera a. lot of students are also using video conferencing apps now as their classes shift on line zoom is one of them seen a huge rise in its use in numbers in fact it's been downloaded more than 50000000 times on just the google app store in the past 3 weeks governments have also
4:23 pm
started using it too and as the u.s. produce software gains popularity the company's now facing questions over its privacy they've been accused of passing information about its users on to facebook let's talk about this with adrian taken sultan and technology journalist on skype from london nice to see you a.j. and we should. say we should point out that g 20 virtual meetings and top level government communications are not happening on the zune they obviously have their own secure lines but the british government said yes we're using it as a into government communicating tool in your opinion is it quote unquote saif. i think it to be worrying. we're getting mixed messages from government the ministry of defense have said to their people in the u.k. don't using while we investigate the national cybersecurity center a different arm of government said had a cipher as long as it's not used for really high level secret stuff i'm sure the
4:24 pm
government have some extra layers of security on top their networks will be some to some extent one would hope insulated from the outside world and they'll be tools to monitor where data is going but i think it is a bit of a worry it has a poor security rack or so quite a few months back the mcas version of zoom security researchers discovered a flaw that allowed anybody to. pick up video and audio from a zoom camera and they took months to fix it and that's a terribly bad sign all software has security flaws all you can really go on is how well the manufacturer is handling it right and in this case they were terrible i also know those don't want to zoom encourage me if i'm wrong but you can be invited to join as soon meeting and you get an email from the invitee and you click it and it takes you straight through you don't even necessarily have to download the app or have an account with them that doesn't sound in my very simple mind that secure
4:25 pm
. yeah the water there's a similar floor where people were hackers were randomly generating zoom meeting id is using a bit of software and just seeing if that meeting existed so they could drop into meetings at random they fix that and i would urge people who are using zoom to set a password for their meetings so that will prevent that sort of floor from from being exploited and also urge people if they're using a desktop computer with a plug in webcam when you're not using the webcam unplug it if you're using a laptop cover up the webcam with a piece of tape and just as important sticker dummy plug like a plug cut off an old pair of headphones into the microphone socket and that will disable the built in microphone inside the laptop and it's not just zoom when computers are exploited hackers will often listen and record what's going on on the web cam in the video whatever software growing you see i mean that's that's just
4:26 pm
good advice at any time i think isn't it more generally i mean obviously v.o.i.p. voice over internet protocol programs are being used so much more right now. does it follow then that there will be a strain on them that there will be service outages just because they are so popular at the moment and and bandwidth is being stretched. i think the general sign is that for most providers a least for me u.k. perspective is that bandwidth isn't being stretched they've got lots of capacity people are using more band which but actually much providers have more than enough it's absolutely fine when more seeing problems at the server end of things so the internet itself the connections applied but sun people's servers the things that live in huge data centers in big sheds around the world are being stretched so the u.k. . version of microsoft's cloud service is called dizzy or that having a bit of capacity problems at the moment some people are reducing the quality of
4:27 pm
their video conferencing services to reduce strain on on services you're seeing some websites take longer obviously things like home shopping and stuff are completely under total onslaught and people are putting queuing systems on or sorts of things but on the whole actually the internet itself is coping remarkably well it's really quite heartening i should have said by the way another worry about zoom is that a large portion of its development is done in china right and that's always a concern it's not just a concern over zoom it's a concern for you know we've seen the wall away from mrs there's been a lot of controversy in the past about the security of the novo laptops for example and to be fair western governments and middle eastern governments if they try and sneak sneaky little spices into better commercial software as well really
4:28 pm
it's down to people to make a judgement yeah as to how they trust one nationality over another and just as you point out take your own security steps anyway mars always a pleasure and nice to see you without a bookshelf behind you something a little different for of. like techie workshop. oh ok using medicine do as india and i were dying to dance with you on to it i think. yeah we'll take a little break from the coronavirus news for a moment evident here with the weather well for the summertime starts tomorrow come out guess what's coming. worse the snow. lower to clear skies across much of europe as you can see there that's not too bad we got some sunshine as take a look at the situation in ukraine fine and sunny not bad at all here berlin yes bring sunshine we can get but that change is underway we've got a cloud just sinking its way from northern parts in fact behind this cold front
4:29 pm
this blue line that i've drawn with chalk there that's a cold front much colder air tucking in behind it if you follow the i suppose they go all the way up to the arctic so very very cold take a look at where we had that pleasant sunshine saturday afternoon for st celsius for 60 seven's over the next couple of days about where it should be by the way to say so temperatures will gradually recover but that's the thing of course a good part of that in northern europe was kiev vienna 14 celsius we create 18 degrees not too bad so follow that line of cloud and rain that cold front remember moscow is down to one degree already 6 therefore berlin as we said 4 degrees there in warsaw around 9 celsius in paris and london that cold northerly wind really picking up coming in behind one or 2 when 3 flower it's certainly a possibility and as we go on into where cheese day will that pretty much sums it up even madrid will struggle to get to 5 degrees celsius a lot of sunshine to the north of that but i think over the next couple days kemal
4:30 pm
it's gloves and shades mixed bag isn't it thank you and folks with your international weather there still ahead for you on this news hour how can the risk of catching the virus be minimized if you do have to leave your home we're going to hear from a doctor who has the answer. and we'll also be looking at how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the economy of as it stands. sports news runner fans organized some special deliveries for the italian club's oldest supporters it's. the u.n. fact finders accuse the burmese military of genocide this is a political if you think that. do you believe the end of modi is a fascist or poor children have all gone they. would have to go through recognize that both sides have legitimate grievances against the other flatmate this is the foundation of climate back then and that is why the palookas must take. up.

0 on the news on here at al-jazeera these are the top stories in spain more than 800 people have died from corona virus in the past 24 hours it's the country's highest number for any single day in a 5700 have died this since the outbreak began and more than 72000 are infected in india 21 day government lockdown has left millions of my good. with the stranded public transport services are suspended some people now travelling on foot for hundreds of kilometers back to their villages and towns. to dinner on 139 people have died from the corona virus in the last 24 hours these latest figures pushing the death toll to up over 2 and a half 1000 with more than 35000 infections. very much going under the radar at the moment is earth hour well when the lights on major landmarks around the world are switched off that's when people are also invited to think about how their lives and activities are affecting the planet and schapelle

has this report on how this year coronavirus is making the event particularly significant. a symbolic annual event with powerful images earth hour has been a moment for millions of people to come together and think about our impact on the world around us this year's event takes on new meaning as billions take part in another shared experience in the night with all that is happening with the current virus allowing us at tanis into a super special activity with your household you can prepare a continent and that is the fact that in the evening which of all of the trinity injuries have come to me and why not talk about all the wonderful gifts that mother nature has to offer you know the things that we look forward to doing once that isolation is lifted and we can all be out there with again and enjoy the wonderful world we live and let us learn the lesson the universe is desperately trying to teach us at the time that we're spending in isolation and not have been moving in

4:36 pm
suggest that as with malaria it might be used as a prophylactic against code to you know the answer is is no and the evidence that you're talking about john is anecdotal evidence so as the commissioner of f.d.a. and the president mentioned yesterday we're trying to strike a balance between making something with the potential of an act of in effect to the american people available at the same time that we do it under the auspices of a protocol that would give us information to determine if it's truly safe and truly effective but the information that you're referring to specifically is anecdotal it was not done in a controlled clinical trial so you really can't make any definitive statement about . that. without saying too much i'm probably more of a fan of that than. maybe than anybody but i'm a big fan we'll see what happens and we all understand what the doctor said is 100
4:37 pm
percent correct it's early but we've you know i've seen things that are impressive or say we're going to know soon within a certain interest including safety but you know when you get to safety this is been prescribed for many years for people to come back malaria which was a big problem and it's very effective it's a strong it's a strong drug so what about the world health organization what do they say about possible treatments for coronavirus well there aren't any known to us or vaccines yet and the w.h.o. is warning against misinformation we also need to ensure that using proven drugs does not create a shortage of those medicines to treats does this photo which they have proven effective the history of medicine is strewn with examples of drugs that would on paper already in a test tube but didn't work in humans or when actually harmful
4:38 pm
here's some thoughts from dr patrick tang division chief of pathology sciences and cigarettes and here in doha he told us some alternative methods could help people recover from the virus certainly there are there people that work so giving people oxygen and supporting their wildly recover from the virus that with their own immune system is something that we do all right now same thing with a pipe dream stars emerged but at the same time we are also trying to find specific drugs that might also help. me out you know so that we during this crisis we are trying to experimental therapies but these need to be done in a very controlled manner in places that have designed very well controlled trials to be able to show whether the drugs actually work or or that might even cause harm that. denmark has extended its nationwide lockdown until april 13th the country's reported $42.00 coronavirus related deaths in as close schools and restaurants it's
