we are we the people we live to tell the real stories are just mended is to deliver in-depth journalism we don't feel in favor good audiences across the globe. al-jazeera. hello i'm kevin allen doha you're watching the news are dominated by our continuing coverage of the coronavirus pandemic spain announces a new day in its numbers of day and calls up the army to help transport bodies. the u.k. scrambles to build temporary field hospitals as its death toll goes beyond $1000.00 . new delhi's mass exodus workers left jobless by india's shutdown or walking
6:01 pm
long distances to their home villages. and mali pushes ahead with a long delayed election despite the coronavirus conflict and the kidnap of an opposition leader. and install china's top football league is aiming for a quick return to action it seems of back in training now and hoping to kick off this season. we begin this news on in europe where 2 countries have released concerning new numbers about the krona virus pandemic let's look 1st at spain it has seen another 832 people die in just 24 hours brings the total there to nearly 5700 deaths since the outbreak began and britain's death toll has surpassed 1000 having risen by 260 from the day before or than 17000 people are known to have been
6:02 pm
infected while in india hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs in new delhi a walking long distances as you can see here packed together to get to their home villages public transport like the rest of the economy is in lockdown and let's take a look now at the johns hopkins university track of what you're seeing here is what i'm seeing here modern technology you can see on the left there in red the total number of confirmed cases. at 618000 more than 618000 worldwide in the wide there that's the total number of people who've been killed by the corona virus pandemic almost 29000 people and over there in the green the total number of people who have recovered from the virus more than $135000.00 that is the situation as it stands right now at this hour we have joined a how who is ringback standing by for us in london there he is for the latest there 1st let's go to martha editor who is live for us in madrid so martha we're hearing
6:03 pm
that the army is being called in to transport bodies what more can you tell us yes one of the health minister has greenlighted to the spanish army to transport bodies because as we heard this last week here a funeral homes in madrid specially magicked which is that whole epicenter of the current of virus endemic with a 50 percent of the death tolls are here from a dream funeral homes are overwhelmed are overloaded we saw how they set up the spring to keep all these corals because of the low temperatures but now this is not enough so next week next week we will see this big court holding all these dead bodies as well as some of the you to discipline sciences the health minister has greenlighted the army that has been deployed nationwide to take over several tasks such as disinfecting train stations airports care homes they said the voice of alarm when they saw all these elderly people in the car or in care homes left
6:04 pm
behind dead in their beds and now their task or duty is are going to also include transporting all of these dead bodies from one place to the other these will be extended the 15 days more off of the state of emergency that was approved this week in the spanish congress it's just awful what about the case rate of new infections has spain seen the peak yet as it's known. well actually things are going to get worse before they get better because we were suspecting to get some test test kits this week and we had to to to give them back because they were the fall to have to return them because when once they got to spain that would be 4 to so we've got plenty of people at home with with symptoms that haven't haven't been diagnosed we've got health care workers that are still working with symptoms we have to remember we have to remind that the 15 percent of all those people infected dissent 72000 people incepted nationwide the 50 percent are health care workers some of
6:05 pm
them are working in the hospitals in the frontline of the whole condemning and they haven't been diagnosed so i think we want to we haven't reached a peak at all dole will have that ministry authorities are saying that in some regions we might have already reached it but i think we're very far from that peak thank you for that mater editor with the latest with the situation in spain let's go live now to john hall who is in london for us and jonah the new numbers giving the picture of the situation the u.k. of just come out what can you tell us. well i think these numbers of great concern to people watching or listening to the news in italy and in spain as we were hearing there and wondering whether the u.k. is next particularly as the health system here scrambles to get up to speed to increase capacity of critical care beds to get more personal protection equipment on board ventilators and so on to be able to cope with the peak when it arrives as
6:06 pm
expected in 2 to 3 weeks time these new figures according to the department of health an increase of 260 in the 24 hour period up to 5 pm on friday is by far the largest single day jump yet an increase of 34 percent on the previous day's figures all of the dead now in the u.k. range in age between $33.10 all but 13 of them had underlying health conditions the infection rate here the total number of infected people over this period $17089.00 and epidemiologists tell us that infection rate is doubling every $3.00 to $4.00 days and joe now looks to me like you're in primrose hill just tell us people there behind you we can see are people paying attention to the lockdown order. well you know we're 5 days now into the last time the government increased the restrictions
6:07 pm
on movement for people in this lockdown telling them giving them guidelines that meant they would have to stay at home as much as possible only to go to work if absolutely necessary only to leave the house on essential business to go to the supermarket or the pharmacy or to come to places like this to exercise to walk the dog but only to do that once a day and for a short a time as possible now there's a lot of criticism of public behavior across the country for the moment with lots of people coming in the spring sunshine into these sort of parks and beauty spots while a lot of people clearly are paying careful attention to the measures some are not you can see a lot of people there sitting enjoying the view of the london skyline among the dog walkers and cyclists joggers and people with their kids kicking a ball in this park now it is of concern the police have new powers to lock in force this lockdown they're not for the moment choosing to exercise those powers
6:08 pm
with a heavy hand but one police constable we spoke to a short while ago said look it's very frustrating quite frankly most of the people out in these parks simply shouldn't be. live from london thank you. the 21 day long down in india is affecting hundreds of thousands of migrant workers public transport services are suspended leaving millions of them stranded some a walking hundreds of kilometers to get home it's estimated millions of jobs could be lost during a lockdown idea across town to elizabeth branham in new delhi thing is the math migration is happening all over the country. so thousands of migrant workers are on the move on foot leaving delhi and that's just the capital region many are also on the move around the country attire families from the very old to babies being carried or walking as they try to return to where they're from india has something like 120000000 migrant workers people that work in different states to where
6:09 pm
they're from and after the government ordered bus and train services to stop nearly a week ago well many migrant workers feel they have no choice but to walk on many of them daily wage earners they have to work every day to survive they're no longer earning money they can't pay their rent or their company accommodation has been shut down now they're walking along highways and on train tracks with no access to food restaurants or obviously closed everything's shot they have no access to basic sanitation yesterday we had 300 migrant workers crammed into the back of to contain a trucks trying to cross the border between the states of telangana and predation so after nearly a week of ordering all public transport to stop the state of trooper they started carrying my going to work as hard and buses something like 200 buses
6:10 pm
every 2 hours and still so many people are waiting and that gives you a scale of the problem and that's just between delhi and the state of with or for the ish delis 100 shelters are can only overflowing with people and the delhi government has decided that it's going to convert public schools into shelters from sunday to cater for so many people all of those who are now homeless jobless and homeless. jordan has reported its 1st death from the coronavirus the victim was an 83 year old woman most of the cases are in the northern city of erbil it's the government has blocked entry into the area the rest of jordan is subject to a curfew only grocery stores and pharmacies are open. the decision to isolate it was made after the current situation was examined especially since most of the cases are from arabic government my point of view which is also the view of the public the decision is very suitable so that we can curb the spread of the virus
6:11 pm
and control it. i once described as fake news is hampering the fight against the virus in iran nearly 300 iranians have died after recently drinking methanol they falsely believed that the all call gives them protection more than a 1000 others are critically ill in the last 24 hours 139 iranians died of the corona virus that increases the total number of reported fatalities to above $2500.00 and around $35000.00 fictions across one insane breast ravi isn't around with more in the toxic methanol. the spread of this information that perhaps consuming what is essentially industrial alcohol what is essentially pure alcohol that is not designed for consumption it's designed for industrial use this chemical agent people believe or have been led to believe either through false information or not enough proper medical information especially in low income areas many people have been led to believe that consuming this alcohol will either prevent or cure
6:12 pm
them of the corona virus obviously this is untrue and we've seen hundreds of people poisoned thousands poisoned hundreds killed in this process and medical professionals that we've been following on social media or that we've spoken to say that this is certainly something that is continuing to compound what is a real public health crisis so this is one of those things that we're seeing is sort of a side bar but a very important problem that is making the response to the coronavirus harder for the government for health professionals operating here to treat coronavirus patients in the country but it really does give you a sense of how desperate people are becoming in the becoming desperate because the infections continue to go up we've seen yet another spike today in the number of cases 3076 another huge number it started in the few hundreds then in the 1000 figure it's broken to and today it's broken the 3000 figure mark as infection continue to rise the death toll has remained steady between 12140 for the last
6:13 pm
several days. as i mentioned the spread of misinformation is being blamed for people drinking industrial alcohol elsewhere on the wall bolts of people are listening to room and for advice president donald trump has described an anti malaria drugs as a game changer in the treatment of corona virus that's been widely disputed by doctors and his government's most senior immunologist is there any evidence to suggest that as with malaria it might be used as a prophylactic against code to know the answer is no and the evidence that you're talking about john is anecdotal evidence so as the commissioner of f.d.a. and the president mentioned yesterday we're trying to strike a balance between making something with the potential of an end of an effect to the american people available at the same time that we do it under the auspices of a protocol that would give us information to determine if it's truly safe in truly effective but the information that you're referring to specifically is anecdotal it
6:14 pm
was not done in a controlled clinical trial so you really can't make any definitive statement about . that. without seeing too much i'm probably more of a fan of that than. maybe than anybody but i'm a big fan and we'll see what happens and we all understand what the doctor said is 100 percent correct it's early but we've you know i've seen things that are impressive you will see we're going to know soon we're going to assume including safety but you know when you get to safety this is been prescribed for many years for people to come back malaria which was a big problem and it's very effective it's a strong it's a strong drug well the world health organization insists there's no known cure or vaccine yet and it's warning against misinformation. we also need to ensure that using proven drugs doesn't create a shortage of those medicines to treat do this photo they have proven effective the
6:15 pm
history of medicine is strewn with examples of drugs that would on paper already in a test you but didn't want in humans or what actually harmful thought to patrick is division chief of pathology sciences center medicine in doha he explained what does help people to recover. certainly there are therapies that work using people oxygen and supporting them while they recover from the virus that their own immune system is something that we do all right now same thing with starting mers but at same time we are also trying to find drugs that might also help. you know definitely during this crisis we are trying their methods here but these need to be done in
6:16 pm
a very controlled manner in places that have to sign very well controlled trials to be able to show whether these guys actually work or that might even cause harm. after more than 2 months restrictions and all being instant china's one so i think that's where the new krona virus outbreak began people are now allowed to enter the city bus it's 11000000 residents from leaving until april 8 o'clock ripple. life in here by province is returning slowly to normal more cars are back on the streets police are on patrol but it's health checks not traffic fines being issued . i'm here to pick up my 2 children and we are going to see one program the 2 children have been in who wins the traffic is very small china has announced a temporary ban on all foreign visitors starting this weekend even those with visas or residence permits will be denied entry only diplomats and flight crew will be
6:17 pm
exempt chinese and foreign airlines will be limited to one flight a week because of fears of importing a 2nd wave of the virus from a brought up to 65 days in lockdown for its 11000000 residents the city of blue hand has downgraded its signal to low risk traffic can now into but no one's allowed to leave the city until april the 8th government workers a sterilising train stations are preparing for the arrival of the 1st inbound trains where a. long time no see would have been discriminated against because i'm for a new hand but i hope people don't treat the people awful hand like a fire if it's a fucking bar joins with china is winning the battle i read the news on the train that china is now trying to block people from coming here and preparation this will help us get back to work and i'm proud to be chinese. walked through testing stations are in operation at south korea's airports to enforce tired health checks on arrival the government reported 146 new cases on saturday that's the highest
6:18 pm
number in a week with a rise in imported cases from europe and the united states and japan confirmed a record daily increase of more than 50 new cases following a surge in infections in tokyo this week japan's prime minister shinzo is appealing to millions in the capital and surrounding regions to avoid non-essential travel until april 12th here in hong kong the government has been forced to tough new. wishes to encourage people to stay at home from saturday all cinemas gymnasiums and time it will be closed for at least a fortnight and public gatherings will be limited to 4 people as the city tries to stem the number of local transmissions. al-jazeera has obtained pictures from inside one of the government's quarantine centers one person held there after being in contact with a flight crew member who tested positive says rooms were sterilized protective gear wasn't provided and health checks were random hong kong's health department reply
6:19 pm
is that it's full of the guidelines to clean and sanitize all quarantine facilities sarah clarke al-jazeera hong kong well many countries grinding to a halt demand for oil has fallen dramatically and so has the price of oil in saudi arabia is also in a price war with russia which sent to oil prices nosedive into a 17 year low from next wednesday the saudis have announced plans to ramp up production to an all time high that announcement was made before the coronavirus became a pandemic billions of people and now under lockdown factories and travel is at a standstill this could drive all prices even lower good news at the petrol pump perhaps but not if you're an oil producer and added to all of that russia says it also plans to boost production to compete for a greater share of the market. is an energy industry specialist he joins us now on skype from the u.s. oil capital houston thank you for your time mr cavanagh other than trying to be
6:20 pm
with you good to have you other than trying to claim as much market share as possible what is the saudi strategy here. well the saudi strategy and also the russian strategy is to essentially kill the u.s. oil and gas industry in recent years was improvements in technology here in the states we've actually had been able to ramp up production up here and our we've been exporting up until just a few weeks ago about 3000000 barrels a day and when that happens in our imports go down obviously the makes the their market share go down and ours up there are trying to recapture that market share by reducing production coming out of the u.s. this is also a case of flexing their muscles i guess showing what power they have in this case exactly they used just the opposite tool in back in the seventy's here in the states trying to drive oil prices up by cutting off imports into the states here there were actors that they're flexing their muscles the other way to take market
6:21 pm
share away from a growing industry here what impact might this strategy have a longer term. well longer term with it's actually threatening the survival of the u.s. industry at this point these prices are so low in the states of west texas intermediate crude is a just a little over $22.00 right now that's below the break even price for most domestic oil and gas producers and so they're they've actually laid down their rigs they've stop drilling and even some producers have talked about shutting in just trying to survive at this point we're saying now well facilities filling up at a very fast rate how long can that go on for. well it can't go on for a much longer word about $460000000.00 barrels here in the states it could we have more capacity but at these prices is going to be difficult for producers to produce that they can continue to go into storage but there's no revenue coming in that
6:22 pm
causes positive income so that's a short term strategy just explain for our view is what is happening in terms of storage i mean i was surprised to read that there are tank is just docks full of oil correct one of the things that producers do both both importers the next 4 years they will store their crude on the water of prices become low and just basically calculating the cost of keeping a ship full of crude off of the coast last time this happened in the states about $2.00 that 10152016 there were a couple of dozen tankers off of port of galveston just off of side of houston and they set there for months waiting for prices to come around you said that this is really threatening that the u.s. oil industry what can the u.s. do to mitigate the effects there's besides government pressure on the saudis and the russians there's not a lot to the u.s.
6:23 pm
can government can do the industry is pretty much at the mercy of the saudis and the russians at this point there has to be some detente between those 2 countries and opec i do know that the other opec countries are pressuring saudi arabia very strongly to in the price war but so far that's not having any effect well i have to leave it there for time thank you for that bob have no they're an energy industry specialist. thank you for kazakhstan as another country had to buy low oil prices so the country's super rich are stepping in to help prop up the economy robin forestay a walkout has more. as it stands army has isolated the 2 main cities the capital. and el monte. the commercial hub has closed the business still a smidgen over sent her hairdresser's home yet that is the director of these beauty salon my main concern is my stuff but i'm really worried.

because everyone has a family and they have children to feed to be honest i'm very worried i'm even ready right now to pay them from my own savings. she tell you how do you like president. has promised a support package worth $10000000000.00 for the economy including helps the businesses like stellars. a minimum wage and a 3 month tax and loan repayment break for small and medium enterprises. the oil rich kazakstan doesn't have the funds it once had crude prices have slumped thanks to the price war between saudi arabia and russia because a colony is being dealt a 2nd blow by coronavirus. the man has declined in the quarterly the price is going down even further it was have been our case if the price was falling but the man was still there we could have bastid by selling but both are falling and that makes

or. watching al-jazeera her monitor of our top stories this hour in spain more than 800 people have died from the corona virus in the past 24 hours it's the country's highest number for a single day nearly 5700 people have died there since the operate began and more than 72000 are infected. officials in the u.k. have just released the latest death toll figures from the coronavirus it now stands at 1019 the u.k. is currently on day 5 of the lockdown but there's concern many people and not abiding by the new rule it's. a 21 day government lockdown in india has left millions of migrant workers stranded public transport services are suspended and
6:32 pm
some are traveling on foot to hundreds of kilometers back to their villages and towns. a new york state has the highest number of cases in the u.s. and in new york city people have been waking to empty streets infections have reached almost 45000 let's go live to alan fischer who's monitoring developments from washington d.c. allan how seriously are people taking these social distancing measures. well some of the pictures we're seeing from new york look like nothing we've ever seen before they loot bizarre quite simply because the streets are so quiet andrew cuomo who is the governor of new york state is due to give his daily update any time know many people outside of new york attorney into that because of the situation in this state because it is the epicenter of the virus here in the united states the moment too hot spots that are very keenly observed new york and also louisiana that is a problem that is just bubbling away in the air certainly social distancing has
6:33 pm
been working although on friday the weather in new york was very good people were actually sunbathing in the parks from the pictures you could see that they were trying to keep distance but the mayor bill de blasio said it's not acceptable people have to realize that they can't do this sort of thing if they want to get on top of the virus that is sunday is a day of worship in many places in new york and he says look if there are houses of worship that are open they are running the risk that people will be moved out of those buildings and those places of worship may be closed in the future in the united states that's a really big statement to make right next door in rhode island got the state the governor has said that they're going to send law enforcement officers door to door checking for new york residents and if they find them any homes in rhode island then they will tell them they have to quarantine themselves for 14 days that's because a lot of people in rhode island actually have beach front properties in new york
6:34 pm
a beach front properties next door in rhode island or we go there perhaps even to visit relatives the police and even stopping some people on the road if they have new york place asking them where they're going what their intentions are and telling them that if they end up at a property there they have to stay indoors for 14 days the governor is very clear they're not walking about with this this is the law this is a suggestion and if people don't follow the law then there were. will be fines and there is the possibility of court action they want to protect the state as much as possible from the increased violence finders just next door and it's also interesting to note that in the next 20 minutes or so we're expecting donald trump to leave the white house he is heading off in a helicopter into virginia to the north and naval base down there he's going to see his farewells to the naval ship that has been prepared i'm will say c.e.o. for new york this afternoon it's expected in new york to add its facilities to the

ongoing crisis and reaction there by monday thanks for that with the latest from washington d.c. thank you for staying with new york where the bar of queens is hard hit than anywhere else it's biggest hospital is already over capacity and cases a far from yes and is on to report. they're sick and in urgent need of a doctor but with the emergency room hospital inundated with coronavirus patients and no available beds they arrive early in the morning to wait in line to try to get seen inside elmhurst hospital medical staff struggle to keep people alive in 124 hour period 13 people died covert 19 the hospital has 500 beds and his overcapacity. needs. to be. a nurse shared video with the new york times eclipse of what it's like inside.

another doctor speaking anonymously described the situation like this it's just like a tidal wave the only beds we have been able to free up are people who have died it's a pretty dire situation covert is completely taking over the hospital they need help and they need help in a real way i've talked to a lot of friends of mine who are working there. they've been inundated with haitian right now. truly is ground 0. elmhurst hospital is in queens an ethnically diverse borough made up mostly of working class immigrants more people have died here than in any other area of new york city. health insurance is a luxury many here don't have elmhurst is a so-called safety net hospital that won't deny services to anybody even if they

can't pay but it simply can't keep up with demand. perhaps most of all is that apex in this surge of sick people needing hospitalization isn't supposed to hit for at least another 2 weeks there's a health care crisis with the number of new yorkers infected with corona virus increasing by the thousands every day it's not a matter of if hospitals here reach a breaking point it's a matter of when and based on what we're seeing here at elmhurst hospital that breaking point might be now. paper rolls on dough al-jazeera new york. the lines all major landmarks are on the wall the banks switched off a 60 minutes to mark earth hour that's when people are invited to think about how their lives and activities are affecting the planet and as anderson reports this year the coronavirus pandemic is making the event particularly significant. a symbolic annual event with powerful images earth hour has been

environmental pollution with climate change we really do live in the same climate and i think that by not changing the way we feel about the world will go on for quite a long time after we've got over the major healthcare and if perhaps when we've gone beyond the economic consequences i guess that's a positive is it also a reminder i guess of of how humans so what humans are doing to the planet and what happens when we all just stay home. well we've seen very clearly whether you look at the fact that the canals in venice are cleaner or when the you look at the fact that parents with asked whether the air their children breeze is much cleaner there are lots of as it were accidental benefits coming out of this but this really is a way to learn and we need to take care of the environment for may well be coming we recovered we won't make the mistakes we made in the 1st place so we really will learn the lessons from this. shock and do
