vaccine that's on track and multiple of the candidates so i would intice a pay that you know a year a year and a half would be able to do it on their own emergency use if we start seeing an efficacy signal you may be able to even use a vaccine at the next season so things are going to be very very different what we're going through now is going to be more than just lessons learned it's going to be things that we have available to us that we did not have before. ok please. scott thank you scott gottlieb your former f.d.a. commissioner wrote a roadmap for recovery after run in our industry are so he suggests at the the right not to suggest that everybody where a mask in public is that something that the task force thinks is a good idea we haven't discussed it to that extent but it's certainly something we could discuss we're getting certainly the number of masks that you need. we are in the process of talking about things i saw his suggestion on that so we'll take
1:01 am
a look at it for a period of time not forever i mean you know we want our country back we're not going to be wearing masks forever but it could be for a short period of time after we get back into gear people could i could see something like that happening for a period of time but i would hope it would be a very limited period of time doctors they'll come back and say for the rest of our lives we have to wear masks is that the roadmap also talks about doing g.p.s. for a social distancing maybe polyps fall in people's phones and hotels for isolation for people. giving them free hotel rooms are those ideas that you're looking at well the g.p.s. that's a very severe idea i've been hearing about a g.p.s. what happens a siren goes off or you get too close to somebody that's pretty severe but he's somebody who was with me for a long time it worked they did a great job at f.d.a. . so we're going to take a look i just i just received it a little while ago he said it over so very good. go ahead let's give it
1:02 am
a shot. what do you say to americans who are upset with you over the way you downplayed this crisis over the last couple of months we have a very much under control in this country the coronavirus is very much under control in the usa it's going to disappear it's like a miracle it will disappear march 4th we have a very small number of people in this country infected march 10th we're prepared we're doing a great job with it it will go away just a calm it will go away what do you say to americans who will go the way i got this wrong and i do want them to stay calm and we are doing a great job if you look at those individual statements they're all to stay calm it will go away you know it will you know it is going away and it will go away and we're going to have a great victory and it's people like you and c.n.n. that say things like that that it's why people just don't want to listen to c.n.n. e-mail you could ask a normal question the statements i made are i want to keep the country calm i don't
1:03 am
want panic in the country i could cause panic much better than even you i could do much of it would make you look like a minor league player but you know what i don't want to do that i want to have our country be calm and strong and fight and win and it will go away and it is incredible the job that all of these people are doing putting them all together the job that they're doing i am very proud of the job they're doing that mike pence is doing that the task force has done that honeywell and proctor and gamble and mike and all of these people have done i'm very proud it's almost a miracle and it is the way it's all come together and instead of asking a nasty snarky question like that you should ask a real question and other than that i'm going to go to somebody else please go ahead please. earn you expressed some concern in the past that medical supplies were going out the back door and that perhaps some hospitals were doing things well i. 40 rest what was told to me by a tremendous power in the business he said that
1:04 am
a new york hospital for a long period of time he was giving 10000 maybe maximum 20000 masks over a short time and all of a sudden he's giving 300000 i said no matter how bad this is could that be possible he said no so there's only a couple of things that could happen is it going out the back door and i've reported it to the city and let the city take a look at it but when you go from 10000 masks 230-0000 masks mike over the same period of time the something going on now i'm not making any charges but when everyone's looking for masks and by the way that's another thing we're making a lot of masks and the sterilization process is going to save a lot of time and a lot amassed but when when you have the biggest distributor of product that distributes to many of the big hospitals and hospital chains and he brings up
1:05 am
a statistic like that and i know you're trying to make a big deal out of it but you shouldn't be you should actually go over to the hospital and find out why you should be asking me i'm just saying it's the way it is you should go over there as a great reporter i have no idea who you are but that's ok you should go over there go to the hospital and find out how come you used to get 10000 masks and you had a full hospital new york city always fall and how come now you have 300000 masks despite the virus at all you have 3 said you go from 12300000 this is very serious stuff i mean i could see from 10 to 20 or from 10 to 40 or 50 or something but how do you go from 12300000 masks so what i think you should do is a i'm sure you're a wonderful investigative reporter you should go to the hospital find out what ok you have here search the place. well it's it's so bad for the economy but the economy is number 2 on my list 1st i
1:06 am
want to save a lot of lives we're going to get the economy back i think the economy is going to come back very fast. steve just asking about the economy what's it like we basically shut down our country and we did that in order to keep people separated keep people apart they're not working in offices they're not in airplanes together you know we really shut it down and you know 150151 other countries are pretty much shut down but here with we have the greatest economy in the world we're the greatest economy in the history of our country and i had to go from doing a great job for 3 years to shutting it down but you know what we're going to build it up and we're going to build it up rapidly and i think in the end will be stronger for it we learned a lot we learned a lot and i have to say we've had great relationships with a lot of countries. china sent us some stuff which was terrific russia sent us
1:07 am
a very very large plane load of things medical equipment which was very nice other countries sent us things that i was very surprised that very happily surprised we learned a lot we're learning a lot and we're also learning. that the concept of borders is very important steve it's very important having borders is very very important but we have done an incredible job the economy is going to come back my focus is saving lives that's the only focus i can have we're going to bring the economy back will bring it back for a place. please thank you max thank you mr president you've said several times that the united states ramped up testing. quicker or louder mr president you said several times that the united states ramped up testing but the united states is still not testing per capita as many rez many people as other countries like south korea why is that and when do you think that that number will be on par with other
1:08 am
countries just very much on par to look look per capita we have areas of country that's very well i know south korea better than anybody it's a very tight you know how many people are unsold you are now big the city of seoul is. 38000000 people as bigger than anything we have 38000000 people all tightly wound together we have vast farmlands we have vast areas where they don't have much of a problem in some cases they have no problem whatsoever we have done more tests what i didn't i didn't talk about per capita we have done more tests by far than any country in the world by far our testing is also better than any country in the world and when you look at that as simple as that looks that's something that's a game changer in every country wants that every country so rather than asking a question like that you should congratulate the people that have done this testing because we inherited this administration and heritage a broken system
1:09 am
a system that was obsolete a system that didn't work it was ok for a tiny small group of people but once you got beyond that it didn't work we have built an incredible system to fact what we have now done more tests than any other country in the world and now the technology is really booming i just spoke to well i spoke to a lot i'm not going to even mention i spoke to a number of different testing companies today and the job that they've done and the job that they're doing is incredible but when abbott comes out and does this so quickly it's really unreal in fact one company i have to say that stands out in the job and i think i can say this i don't want to insult anybody else but roche roche is been incredible in the testing job they've done and they're ramping up exponentially it's up up up up and you should be saying congratulations on stead of asking
1:10 am
a really snarky question because i know exactly what you mean by that you should be saying. congratulations to the men and women who have done this who have inherited a broken test exist and and who have made it great and if you don't say it i'll say it i want to congratulate all of the people you have done a fantastic job and we will see you all tomorrow thank you very much thank you. so you were listening to the u.s. president donald trump alongside his white house corona task force giving their daily briefing and he was just answering some of the questions put to him by reporters over at the white house let's bring in rob runnels he's joining us from los angeles via skype rob i mean you were listening to the whole thing from when the president started speaking up until this point he's answering questions by reporters let's just focus on what the news lines were what did we take away from this briefing. i think the message the president trump wanted to get across in the
1:11 am
briefing is that everything is going very well he repeated over and over and i made notes of how many times he said it's almost a miracle the way things are coming together we're doing it incredible job. we have i think we're doing a great job of the best you could possibly do and so so on and so forth as far as news president said that they are ramping up testing so that there will be millions of test kits available and deployed to hot zones he said that some corporate partnerships notably one between the ford motor company and general electric corporation both obviously huge manufacturers are coming together and that they will be producing ventilators he said that from the stop oil ventilators. that the federal government has control of they are sending
1:12 am
ventilators to various places such as michigan which he said could become the next biggest hot spot. and then there was there were some testy exchanges with reporters when a reporter said you mentioned the wrong number of tests $1000000.00 but didn't mention that these tests are lower on a per capita basis than other countries such as germany or south korea and the president bristled at that call the snarky question and then there was another exchange where he. denied basically saying what he had said when or. redback a lot of statements that he had made in the past so new was the loses the president thinks everything is going very very very well and there are 2500 dead americans in the united states yeah rob that's
1:13 am
a result of of of the covert virus and just and just sort of give us a picture of the overall view in the u.s. and how many you were at 150000 confirmed cases and you were just mentioning that over 2900 deaths. well the overall view there's some interesting polling data that actually came out and it showed that 9 out of 10 americans this is not surprising but 9 out of 10 americans say that their lives have been changed about half say that their lives have been changed radically by the pandemic the. number of people who have been praying for an end to the pandemic is about half in front all of those in my notes there from the pew research foundation as far as the public opinion and president trumps efforts there's been
1:14 am
a rally around the leader fecht and his true public approval ratings have risen pretty substantially during the the great despite all 'd the criticism from some factor some poor as and so he's doing quite well and i think that these daily press briefings an opportunity for him to say over and over again that everything is going to be great and that the federal government is doing a fabulous job on all fronts is part of the. president as you know a very strong core of supporters and there's a natural inclination in a time of national crisis like the 911 attacks pearl harbor you name it for people to rally around their leader and give them their support so i think that's a lot of what you're seeing here all right rob thank you very much you're well.
1:15 am
well the york city's overrun health system is getting a lifeline from the u.s. navy and a medical ship has now docked in the city to help relieve hospitals coronavirus cases soar the 1000 bad vessel has 12 operating rooms so will be used to treat patients that do not have the virus clearing much needed beds inside city hospitals new york state accounts for almost half of the country's confirmed cases gabriel is on the is at the port of manhattan and says the ship could be needed for months. the last time that this particular floating hospital is called the comfort of the u.s. navy came here to new york was 3 days after 911 to help with people who were injured then this ship is massive it is about 894 feet or about 275 meters it has 12 operating rooms over $1000.00 hospital beds inside
1:16 am
and it will have about a level $11200.00 nurses and doctors and staff on it that will be helping here in the coming weeks and perhaps even months in new york city what they are going to use it for is taking patients that do not have coronavirus out of some of the new york city hospitals bringing them here to this hospital least some of them to clear out bed space for coronavirus patients that are needing urgent care in new york city so just to give you an idea though of how much this is needed and how much still needs to be done according to the new york governor they need about 150000 hospital beds in the coming weeks right now they have about 50000 so they're short about 100000 hospital beds this ship that you see as big it is it is is only going to have about a 1000 so there's still short tens of thousands of hospital. beds that are needed
1:17 am
in this city in the coming weeks to meet what is going to be the peak of the most amount of people coming back to that are going to need urgent care the world health organization has sounded a note of hope for the european nations worst hit by the corona virus pandemic saying steps taken in italy and spain should see case numbers drop soon but despite that the number for infections in spain has passed china in the past 24 hours while it saw 800 new deaths and in italy the number of new cases continued to fall but deaths past the 11000 mark brennan reports. even with stringent restrictions empty streets and ever tighter regulations imposed daily declared corona virus cases in europe have now exceeded 400000 continue to rise for the 3rd consecutive day spain reported more than 800 new deaths in the previous 24 hours and after 2 days of decline the number of new deaths in italy spiked upwards again to 812 but
1:18 am
new infections are slowing to get down from the numbers not just stabilize requires a redoubling of public health efforts to push down it won't go down by itself it will be pushed down and that's what we need congress to focus on france's shuttling patients around the country to reduce pressure on the hardest hit regions of the infection rate is proving relentless and $418.00 deaths in the past 24 hours takes france past $3000.00 fatalities in paris hospitals are full and doctors have to agonize over who gets a bed and who doesn't sit but. it's not fair but rather a stress to stanley pay for us to make choices that we don't want to make and to find ourselves in situations where we have to choose which patients we could get in the intensive care as recently as 2 weeks ago russia had just 10 official cases of covert 19 it's fast approaching 2000 now and rising in moscow the city mayor has

dependent we are on each other in the eye of a storm like. scientific and public olds tools are essential but so are humility and kindness we sorely don't e.-t. humility and i assuming the best of each other we can. and we will overcome this together extraordinary heroic efforts are being made voluntary efforts medical ethics and diplomatic efforts faced with a global pandemic the responsibility is on all of us to be part of that effort to all bran and al-jazeera. so while italy and spain remain under the grip of the virus france a struggling to the country has recorded its worst number of new deaths in one day with an additional $418.00 plus in the country's total above 3000 for the 1st time
1:21 am
more than 20000 people are being treated in the country's hospitals that's us about lurches in western france she says even worse figures could be reported in the weeks ahead. it is a huge leap multiple 100 deaths and policy 24 hours is a very worrying situation indeed but one in a way that we have what about the french prime minister it was leaked just a few days ago saying that the 1st 2 weeks of april and we're going to that very soon as calls he said that they would be a very very difficult time to france indeed the frog's could be reaching its peak at that time the coronavirus at this stage has been really concentrated the cases have been concentrated in the north east of the alsatian region but the prime minister had warned to a few days ago he did those cases would really well the spread if you like would really reach across north and from paris region and to other parts of france and it
1:22 am
seems that is in fact what we are seeing a real spread all coronavirus cases and these cases now putting the french destiny not far behind china and the u.k. field hospitals are being set up to treat coronavirus patients to help take the pressure off national health service facilities were chalons reports. the crisp white sheets the medical equipment have you you'd expect in any long established hospital in the u.k. but this is the country's newest set up in a matter of days into vost exhibition holes in london's docklands work continues but n.h.s. nightingale will start taking in coronavirus patients this week eventually they'll be 4000 beds and more such field hospitals are being set up around the country what you see here is a mass mobilization taking place right across the country but also at these new nightingale hospitals this is been an extraordinary team effort on the part of nurses and doctors and therapists and pharmacists across london but also volunteers

and paramedics and people returning to help. they'll be needed to stop the u.k.'s national health service being swamped in the weeks ahead but although coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths are expected to keep going up the u.k.'s chief science officer does see some cause for optimism you would expect to see a continuation of this at least over 2 or 3 weeks then a stabilization and a gradual decrease there after the number of hospital admissions to repeat has gone up roughly the same amount each day suggesting that we're not on a fast acceleration at the moment if this is a lasting slowdown it suggests that the government stay at home campaign for the shuttered shops the social distancing all of this is working for the scientists warn loosen the restrictions too quickly and all that progress could be wasted. some of the 750000 people who volunteered to support health workers have come from
